We study noise induced thermally activated barrier crossing of a Brownian particle that hops in a periodic ratchet potential where the ratchet potential is coupled with a spatially uniform temperature. The viscous friction is considered to decrease exponentially when the temperature $T$ of the medium increases as proposed originally by Reynolds. The results obtained in this work show that the mean first passage time of the particle is considerably lower when the viscous friction is temperature dependent than that of the case where the viscous friction is temperature independent. We then explore the thermally activated barrier crossing rate of the system in the presence of time varying signal. In this case, the interplay between noise and sinusoidal driving force in the bistable system may lead the system into stochastic resonance provided that the random tracks are adjusted in an optimal way to the recurring external force.
Noise induced Brownian dynamics in underdamped medium is studied numerically to understand the firing time of excitable systems. By considering Brownian particles that move in underdamped medium, we study how the first arrival time behaves for different parameters of the model. We study the first arrival time for both single particle as well as the first arrival time of one particle out a system that has N particles. The present study helps to understand the intercellular calcium dynamics in cardiac tissue at the level of a single microdomain and at a tissue level (ensemble of microdomains). I…
We study a non Markovian three state model, subjected to an external periodic signal. This model is intended to describe an excitable systems with periodical driving. In the limit of a small amplitude of the external signal we derive expressions for the spectral power amplification and the signal to noise ratio as well as for the inter-spike interval distribution.
We demonstrate the existence of noise-induced periodicity (coherence resonance) in both a discrete-time model and a continuous-time model of an excitable neuron. In particular, we show that the effects of noise added to the fast and slow dynamics of the models are dramatically different. A Fokker-Planck analysis gives a quantitative explanation of the effects.
Recently, it is observed [Md. Nurujjaman et al, Phy. Rev. E \textbf{80}, 015201 (R) (2009)] that in an excitable system, one can maintain noise induced coherency in the coherence resonance by blocking the destructive effect of the noise on the system at higher noise level. This phenomenon of constant coherence resonance (CCR) cannot be explained by the existing way of simulation of the model equations of an excitable system with added noise. In this paper, we have proposed a general model which explains the noise induced resonance phenomenon CCR as well as coherence resonance (CR) and stochast…
Collective electron transport causes a weakly coupled semiconductor superlattice under dc voltage bias to be an excitable system with $2N+2$ degrees of freedom: electron densities and fields at $N$ superlattice periods plus the total current and the field at the injector. External noise of sufficient amplitude induces regular current self-oscillations (coherence resonance) in states that are stationary in the absence of noise. Numerical simulations show that these oscillations are due to the repeated nucleation and motion of charge dipole waves that form at the emitter when the current falls b…
We have analyzed the interplay between noise and periodic modulations in a mean field model of a neural excitable medium. To this purpose, we have considered two types of modulations; namely, variations of the resistance and oscillations of the threshold. In both cases, stochastic resonance is present, irrespective of if the system is monostable or bistable.
Coherent stochastic resonance is explained in terms of first passage time density functions. Scaling relation between first passage time density functions at resonance for different lengths of the medium is obtained. A formula for first passage time density function at resonance is derived in terms of two universal functions, which demonstrates the universal feature of coherent stochastic resonance. A simple approximate expression for first passage time density function at resonance is proposed which is shown to explain the behavior at resonance fairly accurately.
We calculate, numerically, the residence times (and their distribution) of a Brownian particle in a two-well system under the action of a periodic, saw-tooth type, external field. We define hysteresis in the system. The hysteresis loop area is shown to be a good measure of synchronization of passages from one well to the other. We establish connection between this stochastic synchronization and stochastic resonance in the system.
Emergence of noise induced regularity or Coherence Resonance in nonlinear excitable systems is well known. We explain theoretically why the normalized variance ($V_{N}$) of inter spike time intervals, which is a measure of regularity in such systems, has a unimodal profile. Our semi-analytic treatment of the associated spiking process produces a general yet simple formula for $V_{N}$, which we show is in very good agreement with numerics in two test cases, namely the FitzHugh-Nagumo model and the Chemical Oscillator model.
It is shown that the single-step periodic signal (periodic telegraph signal) can not produce coherent stochastic resonance for diffusion on a segment with one absorbing and one reflecting end points while the multi-step periodic signal does. The general features of this process are exihibited. The resonant frequency is found to decrease and the mean first passage time at resonant frequency increases linearly, as we increase the length of the medium. The cycle variable is shown to be the proper argument to express the first passage time density function at resonance. A formula for first passage…
We consider a slowly rotating rectangular billiard with moving boundaries and use the canonical perturbation theory to describe the dynamics of a billiard particle. In the process of slow evolution certain resonance conditions can be satisfied. Correspondingly, phenomena of scattering on a resonance and capture into a resonance happen in the system. These phenomena lead to destruction of adiabatic invariance and to unlimited acceleration of the particle.
The generalised Langevin equation with a retarded friction and a double-well potential is solved. The random force is modelled by a multiplicative noise with long jumps. Probability density distributions converge with time to a distribution similar to a Gaussian but tails have a power-law form. Dependence of the mean first passage time on model parameters is discussed. Properties of the stochastic resonance, emerging as a peak in the plot of the spectral amplification against the temperature, are discussed for various sets of the model parameters. The amplification rises with the memory and is…
First-passage times in random walks have a vast number of diverse applications in physics, chemistry, biology, and finance. In general, environmental conditions for a stochastic process are not constant on the time scale of the average first-passage time, or control might be applied to reduce noise. We investigate moments of the first-passage time distribution under a transient describing relaxation of environmental conditions. We solve the Laplace-transformed (generalized) master equation analytically using a novel method that is applicable to general state schemes. The first-passage time fro…
We theoretically describe how weak signals may be efficiently transmitted throughout more than one frequency range in noisy excitable media by kind of stochastic multiresonance. This serves us here to reinterpret recent experiments in neuroscience, and to suggest that many other systems in nature might be able to exhibit several resonances. In fact, the observed behavior happens in our (network) model as a result of competition between (1) changes in the transmitted signals as if the units were varying their activation threshold, and (2) adaptive noise realized in the model as rapid activity-d…
We study the effects of noise-intensity fluctuations on the stationary and dynamical properties of an overdamped Langevin model with a bistable potential and external periodical driving force. We calculated the stationary distributions, mean-first passage time (MFPT) and the spectral amplification factor using a complete set expansion (CSE) technique. We found resonant activation (RA) and stochastic resonance (SR) phenomena in the system under investigation. Moreover, the strength of RA and SR phenomena exhibit non-monotonic behavior and their trade-off relation as a function of the squared va…
We study the residence time distributions and explore the possibility of observing stochastic resonance and synchonization of passages in a two-well system driven by a periodic forcing of amplitude larger than a marginal value beyond which one of the two wells become unstable and diasppear. We define and calculate hysteresis loop in the system, the area of which measures the degree of synchronization between the residence time statistics and the input signal, as a function of input noise strength. We analyse the noise induced stability obtained in such a deterministically overall unstable syst…
Time--delayed feedback is exploited for controlling noise--induced motion in coherence resonance oscillators. Namely, under the proper choice of time delay, one can either increase or decrease the regularity of motion. It is shown that in an excitable system, delayed feedback can stabilize the frequency of oscillations against variation of noise strength. Also, for fixed noise intensity, the phenomenon of entrainment of the basic oscillation period by the delayed feedback occurs. This allows one to steer the timescales of noise-induced motion by changing the time delay.
The entropy and kinetic, potential, and interaction energies of an atomic Fermi gas in a trap are studied under the assumption of thermal equilibrium for finite temperature. A Feshbach resonance can cause the fermions to pair into diatomic molecules. The entropy and energies of mixtures of such molecules with unpaired atoms are calculated, in relation to recent experiments on molecular Bose-Einstein condensates produced in this manner. It is shown that, starting with a Fermi gas of temperature $T= 0.1 T_F^0$, where $T_F^0$ is the non-interacting Fermi temperature, an extremely cold degenerate …
We consider dynamics of a slowly time-dependent Dicke model, which represents a many-body generalization of the Landau-Zener model. In particular, the model describes narrow Feshbach resonance passage in an ultracold gas of Fermi atoms. Adiabaticity is destroyed when a parameter crosses a critical value, even at very slow sweeping rates of a parameter. The dynamics crucially depends on direction of the sweep. We apply our recent analysis [A.P. Itin, P. Torma, arXiv:0901.4778v1] to the "inverse" sweep through the resonance, corresponding (in a context of Feshbach resonance passage) to dissociat…
We theoretically examine a zero-temperature system of Fermi degenerate atoms coupled to bosonic molecules via collisionless rapid adiabatic passage across a Feshbach resonance, focusing on saturation of the molecular conversion efficiency at the slowest magnetic-field sweep rates. Borrowing a novel MANY-FERMION Fock-state theory, we find that a proper model of the magnetic-field sweep can systematically remove saturation. We also debunk the common misconception that many-body effects are responsible for molecules existing above the two-body threshold.
Stochastic motion in a bistable, periodically modulated potential is discussed. The system is stimulated by a white noise increments of which have a symmetric stable Lévy distribution. The noise is multiplicative: its intensity depends on the process variable like |x|^{-θ}. The Stratonovich and Itô interpretations of the stochastic integral are taken into account. The mean first passage time is calculated as a function of θfor different values of the stability index αand size of the barrier. Dependence of the output amplitude on the noise intensity reveals a pattern typical for the stochastic …
The diffusive non-Markovian motion over a single-well potential barrier in the presence of a weak sinusoidal time-modulation is studied. We found non-monotonic dependence of the mean escape time from the barrier on a frequency of the periodic modulation that is character to the stochastic resonance phenomenon. The resonant acceleration of diffusion over the barrier occurs at the frequency inversely proportional to the mean first-passage time for the motion in the absence of the time-modulation.
