We analyze the stochastic response of a finite set of globally coupled noisy bistable units driven by rather weak time-periodic forces. We focus on the stochastic resonance and phase frequency synchronization of the collective variable, defined as the arithmetic mean of the variable characterizing each element of the array. For single unit systems, stochastic resonance can be understood with the powerful tools of linear response theory. Proper noise induced phase frequency synchronization for a single unit system in this linear response regime does not exist. For coupled arrays, our numerical simulations indicate an enhancement of the stochastic resonance effects leading to gains larger than unity as well as genuine phase frequency synchronization. The non-monotonicity of the response with the strength of the coupling strength is investigated. Comparison with simplifying schemes proposed in the literature to describe the random response of the collective variable is carried out.
The occurrence of stochastic resonance in bistable systems undergoing anomalous diffusions, which arise from density-dependent fluctuations, is investigated with emphasis on the analytical formulation of the problem as well as a possible analytical derivation of key quantifiers of stochastic resonance. The nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation describing the system dynamics, together with the corresponding Ito-Langevin equation, are formulated. In the linear-response regime analytical expressions of the spectral amplification, of the signal-to-noise ratio and of the hysteresis loop area are derived…
We study the number of periodic solutions in two first order non-autonomous differential equations both of which have been used to describe, among other things, the mean magnetization of an Ising magnet in the time-varying external magnetic field. When the strength of the external field is varied, the set of periodic solutions undergoes a bifurcation in both equations. We prove that despite profound similarities between the equations, the character of the bifurcation can be very different. This results in a different number of coexisting stable periodic solutions in the vicinity of the bifurca…
Stochastic Resonance in Periodic Potentials Revisited
In this article we study transitions from low-density states towards high-density states in bistable plasma-condensate systems. We take into account an anisotropy in transference of adatoms between neighbour layers induced by the electric field near substrate. We derive the generalized one-layer model by assuming that the strength of the electric field is subjected to both periodic oscillations and multiplicative fluctuations. By studying the homogeneous system we discuss the corresponding mean passage time. In the limit of weak fluctuations, we show the optimization of the mean passage time w…
We study a dynamical phase transition in optical bistable systems subject to a time-periodic driving field. The phase transition occurs in the structure of limit cycle as a function of the frequency of the driving field. In the thermodynamic limit, a single limit cycle is divided into two separated limit cycles at the transition point. In finite-size systems, however, there is always a single limit cycle due to the quantum tunneling effect. We use a Floquet dissipative map, which is a time-evolution operator over one period in a dynamics given by a quantum master equation, and discuss the deca…
We consider a massive particle driven with a constant force in a periodic potential and subjected to a dissipative friction. As a function of the drive and damping, the phase diagram of this paradigmatic model is well known to present a pinned, a sliding, and a bistable regime separated by three distinct bifurcation lines. In physical terms, the average velocity $v$ of the particle is nonzero only if either (i) the driving force is large enough to remove any stable point, forcing the particle to slide, or (ii) there are local minima but the damping is small enough, below a critical damping, fo…
We study many-body localised quantum systems subject to periodic driving. We find that the presence of a mobility edge anywhere in the spectrum is enough to lead to delocalisation for any driving strength and frequency. By contrast, for a fully localised many-body system, a delocalisation transition occurs at a finite driving frequency. We present numerical studies on a system of interacting one-dimensional bosons and the quantum random energy model, as well as simple physical pictures accounting for those results.
We study the energy absorption in real time of a disordered quantum spin chain subjected to coherent monochromatic periodic driving. We determine characteristic fingerprints of the well-known ergodic (Floquet-ETH for slow driving/weak disorder) and many-body localized (Floquet-MBL for fast driving/strong disorder) phases. In addition, we identify an intermediate regime, where the energy density of the system -- unlike the entanglement entropy a local and bounded observable -- grows logarithmically slowly over a very large time window.
A system that violates detailed balance evolves asymptotically into a nonequilibrium steady state with non-vanishing currents. Analogously, when detailed balance holds at any instant of time but the system is driven through time-periodic variations of external parameters, it evolves toward a time-periodic state, which can also support non-vanishing currents. In both cases the maintenance of currents throughout the system incurs a cost in terms of entropy production. Here we compare these two scenarios for one dimensional diffusive systems with periodic boundary condition, a framework commonly …
Using stochastic thermodynamics, the properties of interacting linear chains subject to periodic drivings are investigated. The systems are described by Fokker-Planck-Kramers equation and exact (explicit) solutions are obtained for periodic drivings as functions of the modulation frequency and strength constants. The limit of long chains is analyzed by means of a protocol in which the intermediate temperatures are self-consistently chosen and the entropy production is decomposed as a sum of two individual contributions, one coming from real baths (placed at extremities of lattice) and other fr…
We study the isotropic XY chain with a transverse magnetic field acting on a single site and analyse the long time behaviour of the time-dependent state of the system when a periodic perturbation drives the impurity. We find that for high frequencies the state approaches a periodic orbit synchronised with the forcing and provide the explicit rate of convergence to the asymptotics.
When a chaotic, ergodic Hamiltonian system with $N$ degrees of freedom is subject to sufficiently rapid periodic driving, its energy evolves diffusively. We derive a Fokker-Planck equation that governs the evolution of the system's probability distribution in energy space, and we provide explicit expressions for the energy drift and diffusion rates. Our analysis suggests that the system generically relaxes to a long-lived "prethermal" state characterized by minimal energy absorption, eventually followed by more rapid heating. When $N\gg 1$, the system ultimately absorbs energy indefinitely fro…
We demonstrate that the prototypical two-dimensional Chern insulator hosts exotic quantum multi-criticality in the presence of an appropriate periodic driving: a linear Dirac-like transition coexists with a nodal loop-like transition caused by emerging symmetries. The existence of multiple universality classes and scaling laws can be unambiguously captured by a single renormalization group approach based on the stroboscopic Floquet Hamiltonian, regardless of whether the topological transition is associated with the anomalous edge modes or not.
We study the energy dynamics of a particle in a billiard subject to a rapid periodic drive. In the regime of large driving frequencies $ω$, we find that the particle's energy evolves diffusively, which suggests that the particle's energy distribution $η(E,t)$ satisfies a Fokker-Planck equation. We calculate the rates of energy absorption and diffusion associated with this equation, finding that these rates are proportional to $ω^{-2}$ for large $ω$. Our analysis suggests three phases of energy evolution: Prethermalization on short timescales, then slow energy absorption in accordance with the …
We introduce an alternative route for obtaining reliable cyclic engines, based on interacting Brownian particles under time-periodic drivings. General expressions for the thermodynamic fluxes, such as power and heat, are obtained using the framework of Stochastic Thermodynamics. Several protocols for optimizing the engine performance are considered, by looking at system parameters such as the output forces and their phase-difference. We study both work-to-work and heat-to-work engines. Our results suggest that carefully designed interactions between particles can lead to more efficient engines…
Heating under periodic driving is a generic nonequilibrium phenomenon, and it is a challenging problem in nonequilibrium statistical physics to derive a quantitatively accurate heating rate. In this work, we provide a simple formula on the heating rate under fast and strong periodic driving in classical and quantum many-body systems. The key idea behind the formula is constructing a time-dependent dressed Hamiltonian by moving to a rotating frame, which is found by a truncation of the high-frequency expansion of the micromotion operator, and applying the linear-response theory. It is confirmed…
The control of many-body quantum dynamics in complex systems is a key challenge in the quest to reliably produce and manipulate large-scale quantum entangled states. Recently, quench experiments in Rydberg atom arrays (Bluvstein et. al., arXiv:2012.12276) demonstrated that coherent revivals associated with quantum many-body scars can be stabilized by periodic driving, generating stable subharmonic responses over a wide parameter regime. We analyze a simple, related model where these phenomena originate from spatiotemporal ordering in an effective Floquet unitary, corresponding to discrete time…
