Traditional estimators of the mass of galaxy clusters assume that the cluster components (galaxies, intracluster medium, and dark matter) are in dynamical equilibrium. Two additional estimators, that do not require this assumption, were proposed in the 1990s: gravitational lensing and the caustic technique. With these methods, we can measure the cluster mass within radii much larger than the virial radius. In the caustic technique, the mass measurement is only based on the celestial coordinates and redshifts of the galaxies in the cluster field of view; therefore, unlike lensing, it can be, in principle, applied to clusters at any redshift. Here, we review the origin, the basics and the performance of the caustic method.
We study the dependence of quasar clustering on quasar luminosity and black hole mass by measuring the angular overdensity of photometrically selected galaxies imaged by WISE about z $\sim$ 0.8 quasars from SDSS. By measuring the quasar-galaxy cross-correlation function and using photometrically selected galaxies, we achieve a higher density of tracer objects and a more sensitive detection of clustering than measurements of the quasar autocorrelation function. We test models of quasar formation and evolution by measuring the luminosity dependence of clustering amplitude. We find a significant …
We report the first Chandra detection of emission out to the virial radius in the cluster Abell 1835 at z=0.253. Our analysis of the soft X-ray surface brightness shows that emission is present out to a radial distance of 10 arcmin or 2.4 Mpc, and the temperature profile has a factor of ten drop from the peak temperature of 10 keV to the value at the virial radius. We model the Chandra data from the core to the virial radius and show that the steep temperature profile is not compatible with hydrostatic equilibrium of the hot gas, and that the gas is convectively unstable at the outskirts. A po…
Sizes of galaxies are an important diagnostic for galaxy formation models. In this study I use the abundance matching ansatz, which has proven to be successful in reproducing galaxy clustering and other statistics, to derive estimates of the virial radius, R200, for galaxies of different morphological types and wide range of stellar mass. I show that over eight of orders of magnitude in stellar mass galaxies of all morphological types follow an approximately linear relation between 3D half-mass radius of their stellar distribution, rhalf and virial radius, rhalf~0.015R200 with a scatter of ~0.…
We use particle data from the Illustris simulation, combined with individual kinematic constraints on the mass of the Milky Way (MW) at specific distances from the Galactic center, to infer the radial distribution of the MW's dark matter halo mass. Our method allows us to convert any constraint on the mass of the MW within a fixed distance to a full circular velocity profile to the MW's virial radius. As primary examples, we take two recent (and discrepant) measurements of the total mass within 50 kpc of the Galaxy and find they imply very different mass profiles and stellar masses for the Gal…
Recent simulations have indicated that the dark matter halos of galaxy clusters should feature steep density jumps near the virial radius. Since the member galaxies are expected to follow similar collisionless dynamics as the dark matter, the galaxy density profile should show such a feature as well. We examine the potential of current datasets to test this prediction by selecting cluster members for a sample of 56 low-redshift (0.1<z<0.3) galaxy clusters, constructing their projected number density profiles, and fitting them with two profiles, one with a steep density jump and one without. Ad…
We present joint Suzaku and Chandra observations of MKW4. With a global temperature of 1.6 keV, MKW4 is one of the smallest galaxy groups that have been mapped in X-rays out to the virial radius. We measure its gas properties from its center to the virial radius in the north, east, and northeast directions. Its entropy profile follows a power-law of $\propto r^{1.1}$ between R$_{500}$ and R$_{200}$ in all directions, as expected from the purely gravitational structure formation model. The well-behaved entropy profiles at the outskirts of MKW4 disfavor the presence of gas clumping or thermal no…
The baryon content around local galaxies is observed to be much less than is needed in Big Bang nucleosynthesis. Simulations indicate that a significant fraction of these "missing baryons" may be stored in a hot tenuous circum-galactic medium (CGM) around massive galaxies extending to or even beyond the virial radius of their dark matter halos. Previous observations in X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) signal claimed that $\sim(1-50)\%$ of the expected baryons are stored in a hot CGM within the virial radius. The large scatter is mainly caused by the very uncertain extrapolation of the hot gas…
We report properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) in Abell~1246 to the virial radius ($r_{200}$) and further outside as observed with Suzaku. The ICM emission is clearly detected to $r_{200}$, and we derive profiles of electron temperature, density, entropy, and cluster mass based on the spectral analysis. The temperature shows variation from $\sim 7$ keV at the central region to $\sim 2.5$ keV around $r_{200}$. The total mass in $r_{500}$ is $(4.3 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{14}~M_{\odot}$, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium. At $r>r_{500}$, the hydrostatic mass starts to decline and we, therefore,…
We present X-ray observations of the northern outskirts of the relaxed galaxy cluster A1413 with Suzaku, whose XIS instrument has the low intrinsic background needed to make measurements of these low surface brightness regions. We excise 15 point sources superimposed on the image above a flux of $1\times 10^{-14}$ \fluxunit (2--10keV) using XMM-Newton and Suzaku images of the cluster. We quantify all known systematic errors as part of our analysis, and show our statistical errors encompasses them for the most part. Our results extend previous measurements with Chandra and XMM-Newton, and show …
Aims. This work considers the Virgo cluster of galaxies, focusing on its structure, kinematics, and morphological landscape. Our principal aim is to estimate the virial mass of the cluster. For this purpose, we present a sample of 1537 galaxies with radial velocities $V_{LG} < 2600$~km~s$^{-1}$ situated within a region of $ΔSGL = 30^\circ$ and $ΔSGB = 20^\circ$ around M87. About half of the galaxies have distance estimates. Methods. We selected 398 galaxies with distances in a $(17\pm5)$~Mpc range. Based on their 1D and 2D number-density profiles and their radial velocity dispersions, we made …
We use new Suzaku observations of PKS 0745-191 to measure the thermodynamic properties of its ICM out to and beyond r_{200} (reaching 1.25r_{200}) with better accuracy than previously achieved, owing to a more accurate and better understood background model. We investigate and resolve the tensions between the previous Suzaku and ROSAT results for PKS 0745-191, which are found to be principally caused by incorrect background modelling in the previous Suzaku analysis. We investigate in depth the systematic errors affecting this observation, and present temperature, density, entropy and gas mass …
In this second paper on the entire virial region of the relaxed fossil cluster RXJ1159+5531, we present a hydrostatic analysis of the hot intracluster medium (ICM). For a model consisting of ICM, stellar mass from the central galaxy (BCG), and an NFW dark matter (DM) halo, we obtain good descriptions of the projected radial profiles of ICM emissivity and temperature. The BCG stellar mass is clearly detected with M_star/L_K = 0.61 +/- 0.11 solar, consistent with stellar population synthesis models for a Milky-Way IMF. We obtain a halo concentration, c_200 =8.4 +/- 1.0, and virial mass, M_200 = …
We present results from the analysis of a mosaic of thirteen XMM-Newton pointings covering the Virgo Cluster from its center northwards out to a radius r~1.2 Mpc (~4.5 degrees), reaching the virial radius and beyond. This is the first time that the properties of a modestly sized (M_vir~1.4e14 M_sun, kT~2.3 keV), dynamically young cluster have been studied out to the virial radius. The density profile of the cluster can be described by a surprisingly shallow power-law with index 1.21+/-0.12. In the radial range of 0.3r_vir<r<r_vir, the best fit temperature drops by roughly 60 per cent. Within a…
We analyzed XMM-Newton data of the Perseus cluster out to $\sim$1 Mpc, or approximately half the virial radius. Using the flux ratios of Lyalpha lines of H-like Si and S to Kalpha line of He-like Fe, the abundance ratios of Si/Fe and S/Fe of the intracluster medium (ICM) were derived using the APEC plasma code v2.0.1. The temperature dependence of the line ratio limits the systematic uncertainty in the derived abundance ratio. The Si/Fe and S/Fe in the ICM of the Perseus cluster show no radial gradient. The emission-weighted averages of the Si/Fe and S/Fe ratios outside the cool core are 0.91 …
Galaxies that are several virial radii beyond groups/clusters show preferentially quiescent star formation rates. Using a galaxy group/cluster catalog from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, together with a cosmological N-body simulation, we examine the origin of this environmental quenching beyond the virial radius. Accounting for the clustering of groups/clusters, we show that central galaxies show enhanced SFR quenching out to 2.5 virial radii beyond groups/clusters, and we demonstrate that this extended environmental enhancement can be explained simply by 'ejected' satellite galaxies that orbit…
Recently, Suzaku has produced temperature and entropy profiles, along with profiles of gas density, gas fraction, and mass, for multiple galaxy clusters out to ~r_200 (~= virial radius). In this paper, we compare these novel X-ray observations with results from N-body + hydrodynamic adaptive mesh refinement cosmological simulations using the Enzo code. There is excellent agreement in the temperature, density, and entropy profiles between a sample of 27 mostly substructure-free massive clusters in the simulated volume and the observed clusters. This supports our previous contention that cluster…
We present Suzaku observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 2029, which exploit Suzaku's low particle background to probe the ICM to radii beyond those possible with previous observations (reaching out to the virial radius), and with better azimuthal coverage. We find significant anisotropies in the temperature and entropy profiles, with a region of lower temperature and entropy occurring to the south east, possibly the result of accretion activity in this direction. Away from this cold feature, the thermodynamic properties are consistent with an entropy profile which rises, but less steeply th…
We present a Chandra, Suzaku and Rosat study of the hot Intra Group Medium (IGrM) of the relaxed fossil group/ poor cluster RXJ1159+5531. This group exhibits an advantageous combination of flat surface brightness profile, high luminosity and optimal distance, allowing the gas to be detected out to the virial radius (Rvir=R108=1100 kpc) in a single Suzaku pointing, while the complementary Chandra data reveal a round morphology and relaxed IGrM image down to kpc scales. We measure the IGrM entropy profile over 3 orders of magnitude in radius, including 3 data bins beyond 0.5R200 with azimuthal c…
We report Suzaku observations of the northern half of the Hydra A cluster out to ~1.4 Mpc, reaching the virial radius. This is the first Suzaku observations of a medium-size (kT ~3 keV) cluster out to the virial radius. Two observations were conducted, north-west and north-east offsets, which continue in a filament direction and a void direction of the large-scale structure of the Universe, respectively. The X-ray emission and distribution of galaxies elongate in the filament direction. The temperature profiles in the two directions are mostly consistent with each other within the error bars a…
We present observations using the Small Array of the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI; 14-18 GHz) of four Abell and three MACS clusters spanning 0.171-0.686 in redshift. We detect Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) signals in five of these without any attempt at source subtraction, although strong source contamination is present. With radio-source measurements from high-resolution observations, and under the assumptions of spherical $β$-model, isothermality and hydrostatic equilibrium, a Bayesian analysis of the data in the visibility plane detects extended SZ decrements in all seven clusters over and a…
Context: The shape of the mass density profiles of cosmological halos informs us of the nature of DM and DM-baryons interactions. Previous estimates of the inner slope of the mass density profiles of clusters of galaxies are in opposition to predictions derived from numerical simulations of CDM. Aims: We determine the inner slope of the DM density profile of a massive cluster of galaxies, Abell S1063 (RXC J2248.7$-$4431) at $z=0.35$, with a dynamical analysis based on an extensive spectroscopic campaign carried out with the VIMOS and MUSE spectrographs at the ESO VLT. This new data set provide…
We search the cool core galaxy clusters in the REXCESS sample for evidence of large scale gas sloshing, and find clear evidence for sloshing in RXJ2014.8-2430, the strongest cool core cluster in the REXCESS cluster sample. The residuals of the surface brightness distribution from the azimuthal average for RXJ2014 show a prominent swirling excess feature extending out to an abrupt surface brightness discontinuity at 800 kpc from the cluster core (half the virial radius) to the south, which the XMM-Newton observations confirm to be cold, low entropy gas. The gas temperature is significantly high…
In this paper, we measure the optical-to-virial velocity ratios Vopt/V200c of disk galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) at a mean redshift of <z> = 0.07 and with stellar masses 10^9 M_sun < M_* < 10^11 M_sun. Vopt/V200c, the ratio of the circular velocity measured at the virial radius of the dark matter halo (\sim150 kpc) to that at the optical radius of the disk (\sim10 kpc), is a powerful observational constraint on disk galaxy formation. It links galaxies to their dark matter haloes dynamically and constrains the total mass profile of disk galaxies over an order of magnitude in l…
We use N-body simulations to investigate the radial dependence of the density and velocity dispersion in cold dark matter (CDM) halos. In particular, we explore how closely Q rho/sigma^3, a surrogate measure of the phase-space density, follows a power-law in radius. Our study extends earlier work by considering, in addition to spherically-averaged profiles, local Q-estimates for individual particles, Q_i; profiles based on the ellipsoidal radius dictated by the triaxial structure of the halo, Q_i(r'); and by carefully removing substructures in order to focus on the profile of the smooth halo, …
We test the recently proposed (Mediavilla et al. 2018) black hole mass scaling relationship based on the redshift {with respect to the quasar's rest frame} of the Fe III$λλ$2039-2113 line blend. To this end, we fit this feature in the spectra of a well suited sample of quasars, observed with X-shooter at the Very Large Telescope (VLT), whose masses have been independently estimated using the virial theorem. For the quasars of this sample we consistently confirm the redshift of the Fe III$λλ$2039-2113 blend and find that it correlates with the squared widths of H$β$, H$α$ and Mg II, which are c…
We wish to reassess the properties of the ICM at large radii in the galaxy cluster PKS 0745-191 in light of the recent Suzaku measurements. We analyze an archival 10.5 ksec ROSAT/PSPC observation to extract the surface-brightness profile of PKS 0745-191 and infer the deprojected density profile. We then compare the ROSAT surface-brightness profile with the Suzaku result. We perform a mass analysis combining the ROSAT density profile and the published temperature profiles from different instruments. We find that the ROSAT surface-brightness profile is statistically inconsistent (7.7 sigma) with…
The caustic technique uses galaxy redshifts alone to measure the escape velocity and mass profiles of galaxy clusters to clustrocentric distances well beyond the virial radius, where dynamical equilibrium does not necessarily hold. We provide a detailed description of this technique and analyse its possible systematic errors. We apply the caustic technique to clusters with mass M_200>=10^{14}h^{-1} M_sun extracted from a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation of a LambdaCDM universe. With a few tens of redshifts per squared comoving megaparsec within the cluster, the caustic technique, on averag…
We explore the mass distribution of material associated with galaxies from the observation of gravitational weak lensing for the galaxy mass correlation function with the aid of $N$-body simulations of dark matter. The latter is employed to unfold various contributions that contribute to the integrated line of sight mass density. We conclude that galaxies have no definite edges of the matter distribution, extending to the middle to neighbouring galaxies with the density profile roughly $r^{-2.4}$ beyond the virial radius. The mass distributed beyond the virial radius (gravitationally bound rad…
We investigate the relationship between the turnaround radius ($R_t$) and the virial mass ($M_v$) of cosmic structures in the context of $Λ$CDM model and in an $f(R)$ model of modified gravity -- namely, the Hu-Sawicki model. The $R_t$ is the distance from the center of the cosmic structure to the shell that is detaching from the Hubble flow at a given time, while the $M_v$ is defined, for this work, as the mass enclosed within the volume where the density is $200$ times the background density. We consider that gravitationally bound astrophysical systems follow a Navarro-Frenk-White density pr…
Some observations such as those presented in Walker et al. show that the observed entropy profiles of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) deviate from the power-law prediction of adiabatic simulations. This implies that non-gravitational processes, which are absent in the simulations, may be important in the evolution of the ICM, and by quantifying the deviation, we may be able to estimate the feedback energy in the ICM and use it as a probe of the non-gravitational processes. To address this issue we calculate the ICM entropy profiles in a sample of 47 galaxy clusters and groups, which have been o…
We use weak lensing observations to make the first measurement of the characteristic depletion radius, one of the three radii that characterize the region where matter is being depleted by growing haloes. The lenses are taken from the halo catalog produced by the extended halo-based group/cluster finder applied to DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys DR9, while the sources are extracted from the DECaLS DR8 imaging data with the Fourier_Quad pipeline. We study halo masses $12 < \log ( M_{\rm grp} ~[{\rm M_{\odot}}/h] ) \leq 15.3$ within redshifts $0.2 \leq z \leq 0.3$. The virial and splashback radii ar…
Cluster mass profiles are tests of models of structure formation. Only two current observational methods of determining the mass profile, gravitational lensing and the caustic technique, are independent of the assumption of dynamical equilibrium. Both techniques enable determination of the extended mass profile at radii beyond the virial radius. For 19 clusters, we compare the mass profile based on the caustic technique with weak lensing measurements taken from the literature. This comparison offers a test of systematic issues in both techniques. Around the virial radius, the two methods of ma…
We find that the Fe III$λλ$2039-2113 spectral feature in quasars appears systematically redshifted by amounts accountable under the hypothesis of gravitational redshift induced by the central supermassive black hole. Our analysis of 27 composite spectra from the BOSS survey indicates that the redshift and the broadening of the lines in the Fe III$λλ$2039-2113 blend roughly follow the expected correlation in the weak limit of Schwarzschild geometry for virialized kinematics. Assuming that the Fe III UV redshift provides a measure of $M_{BH}\over R$ (${Δλ\over λ}\simeq{3\over2}{G\over c^2} {M_{B…
Using cosmological galaxy formation simulations from the MaGICC project, spanning more than three magnitudes in stellar mass (~10^7-3x10^{10} Msun), we trace the baryonic cycle of infalling gas from the virial radius through to its participation in the star formation process. An emphasis is placed upon the temporal history of chemical enrichment during its passage through the corona and CGM. We derive the distributions of time between gas crossing the virial radius and being accreted to the star forming region (which allows mixing within the corona), as well as the time between gas being accre…
We review past work using broad emission lines as virial estimators of black hole masses in quasars. Basically one requires estimates of the emitting region radius and virial velocity dispersion to obtain black hole masses. The three major ways to estimate the broad-line emitting region (BLR) radius involve: (1) direct reverberation mapping, (2) derivation of BLR radius for larger samples using the radius-luminosity correlation derived from reverberation measures, and (3) estimates of BLR radius using the definition of the ionization parameter solved for BLR radius (photoionization method). At…
The outskirts of galaxy clusters, near the virial radius, remain relatively unexplored territory and yet are vital to our understanding of cluster growth, structure, and mass. In this presentation, we show the first results from a program to constrain the state of the outer intracluster medium (ICM) in a large sample of galaxy clusters, exploiting the strengths of three complementary X-ray observatories: Suzaku (low, stable background), XMM-Newton (high sensitivity), and Chandra (good spatial resolution). By carefully combining observations from the cluster core to beyond r_200, we are able to…
Chameleon gravity is an example of a model that gives rise to interesting phenomenology on cosmological scales while simultaneously possessing a screening mechanism, allowing it to avoid solar system constraints. Such models result in non-linear field equations, which can be solved analytically only in simple highly symmetric systems. In this work we study the equation of motion of a scalar-tensor theory with chameleon screening using the finite element method. More specifically, we solve the field equation for spherical and triaxial NFW cluster-sized halos. This allows a detailed investigatio…
Previous analysis of the fossil-group/cluster RXJ1159+5531 with X-ray observations from a central Chandra pointing and an offset-North Suzaku pointing indicate a radial intracluster medium (ICM) entropy profile at the virial radius ($R_{\rm vir}$) consistent with predictions from gravity-only cosmological simulations, in contrast to other cool-core clusters. To examine the generality of these results, we present three new Suzaku observations that, in conjunction with the North pointing, provide complete azimuthal coverage out to $R_{\rm vir}$. With two new Chandra ACIS-I observations overlappi…
Determining the virial factor of the broad-line region (BLR) gas is crucial for calibrating AGN black hole mass estimators, since the measured line-of-sight velocity needs to be converted into the intrinsic virial velocity. The average virial factor has been empirically calibrated based on the M-sigma relation of quiescent galaxies, but the claimed values differ by a factor of two in recent studies. We investigate the origin of the difference by measuring the M-sigma relation using an updated galaxy sample from the literature, and explore the dependence of the virial factor on various fitting …
In the local Universe, galaxies in groups and clusters contain less gas and are less likely to be forming stars than their field counterparts. This effect is not limited to the central group/cluster regions, but is shown by recent observations to persist out to several virial radii. To gain insight into the extent and cause of this large-scale environmental influence, we use a suite of high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulations to analyse galaxies around simulated groups and clusters of a wide range of mass (log M/M_sun = [13.0, 15.2]). In qualitative agreement with the observations…
We present 16-GHz AMI SZ observations of 19 clusters with L_X >7x10^37 W (h50=1) selected from the LoCuS survey (0.142<z<0.295) and of A1758b, in the FoV of A1758a. We detect 17 clusters with 5-23sigma peak surface brightnesses. Cluster parameters are obtained using a Bayesian cluster analysis. We fit isothermal beta-models to our data and assume the clusters are virialized (with all the kinetic energy in gas internal energy). Our gas temperature, T_AMI, is derived from AMI SZ data, not from X-ray spectroscopy. Cluster parameters internal to r500 are derived assuming HSE. We find: (i) Differen…
We measure for the first time the outermost edges of the Milky Way (MW) halo in terms of the depletion and turnaround radii. The inner depletion radius, $r_\mathrm{id}$, identified at the location of maximum infall velocity, separates a growing halo from the draining environment, while the turnaround radius, $r_\mathrm{ta}$, marks the outermost edge of infalling material towards the halo, both of which are located well outside the virial radius. Using the motions of nearby dwarf galaxies within $3\mathrm{Mpc}$, we obtain a marginal detection of the infall zone around the MW with a maximum velo…
We measure the thermodynamic properties of cluster outer regions to provide constraints on the processes that rule the formation of large scale structures. We derived the thermodynamic properties of the intracluster gas (temperature, entropy) by combining the SZ thermal pressure from Planck and the X-ray gas density from ROSAT. This method allowed us to reconstruct for the first time temperature and entropy profiles out to the virial radius and beyond in a large sample of objects. At variance with several recent Suzaku studies, we find that the entropy rises steadily with radius, albeit at at …
We consider the dynamics in and near galaxy clusters. Gas, dark matter and galaxies are presently falling into the clusters between approximately 1 and 5 virial radii. At very large distances, beyond 10 virial radii, all matter is following the Hubble flow, and inside the virial radius the matter particles have on average zero radial velocity. The cosmological parameters are imprinted on the infall profile of the gas, however, no method exists, which allows a measurement of it. We consider the results of two cosmological simulations (using the numerical codes RAMSES and Gadget) and find that t…
The total mass derived from X-ray emission is biased low in a large number of clusters when compared with the mass estimated via strong and weak lensing. Suzaku and Chandra observations out to the virial radius report in several relaxed clusters steep temperature gradients that on assuming pure thermal hydrostatic equilibrium imply an unphysically decreasing mass profile. Moreover, the gas mass fraction appears to be inconsistent with the cosmic value measured from the CMB. Such findings can be interpreted as an evidence for an additional nonthermal pressure in the outskirts of these clusters.…
We find that infalling dark matter halos (i.e., the progenitors of satellite halos) begin losing mass well outside the virial radius of their eventual host halos. The peak mass occurs at a range of clustercentric distances, with median and 68th percentile range of 1.8 +2.3/-1.0 R_(vir,host) for progenitors of z=0 satellites. The peak circular velocity for infalling halos occurs at significantly larger distances (3.7 +3.3/-2.2 R_(vir,host) at z=0). This difference arises because different physical processes set peak circular velocity (typically, ~1:5 and larger mergers which cause transient cir…
We study the impact of cosmic rays (CRs) on the structure of virial shocks, using a large suite of high-resolution cosmological FIRE-2 simulations accounting for CR injection by supernovae. In massive ($M_{\rm halo} \gtrsim 10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$), low-redshift ($z\lesssim 1-2$) halos, which are expected to form "hot halos" with slowly-cooling gas in quasi-hydrostatic equilibrium (with a stable virial shock), our simulations without CRs do exhibit clear virial shocks. The cooler phase condensing out from inflows becomes pressure-confined to over-dense clumps, embedded in low-density, volume-filli…
Virial shocks around galaxy clusters are expected to show a cutoff in the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) signal, coincident with a leptonic ring. However, until now, leptonic virial signals were reported only in Coma and in stacked Fermi-LAT clusters, and an SZ virial shock signal was reported only in A2319. We point out that a few clusters --- presently Coma, A2319, and A2142 --- already show a sharp drop in Planck SZ pressure near the virial radius, coincident with a weak LAT $γ$-ray excess. These signatures are shown to trace the virial shocks of the clusters, at joint medium to high confi…
Context. Galaxy clusters are continuously growing through the accretion of matter in their outskirts. This process induces inhomogeneities in the gas density distribution (clumping) which need to be taken into account to recover the physical properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) at large radii. Aims. We studied the thermodynamic properties in the outskirts (R > R500) of the massive galaxy cluster Abell 2142 by combining the Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) effect with the X-ray signal. Methods. We combined the SZ pressure profile measured by Planck with the XMM-Newton gas density profile to recov…
The efficiency of recent star formation (SF) in galaxies increases with increasing projected distance from the centre of a cluster out to several times its virial radius (R_v). Using a complete sample of galaxies in 268 clusters from the SDSS DR4, we investigate how, at a given projected radius from the cluster centre, M* and SF properties of a galaxy depend on its absolute line-of-sight velocity in the cluster rest frame, |v_LOS|. We find that for R<0.5 R_v, the fraction of high mass non-BCG galaxies increases towards the centre for low |v_LOS|. At a given projected radius, the fraction of Ga…

We present the first comparison of virial masses of galaxy clusters with their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect (SZE) signals. We study 15 clusters from the Hectospec Cluster Survey (HeCS) with MMT/Hectospec spectroscopy and published SZE signals. We measure virial masses of these clusters from an average of 90 member redshifts inside the radius $r_{100}$. The virial masses of the clusters are strongly correlated with their SZE signals (at the 99% confidence level using a Spearman rank-sum test). This correlation suggests that $Y_{SZ}$ can be used as a measure of virial mass. Simulations predict a po…
We analyze several large samples of AGN in order to establish the best tools required to study the evolution of black hole mass (M_BH) and normalized accretion rate (L/L_Edd). The data include spectra from the SDSS, 2QZ and 2SLAQ surveys at z<2, and a compilation of smaller samples with 0<z<5. We critically evaluate the usage of the MgII(2798A) and CIV(1549A) lines, and adjacent continuum bands, as estimators of M_BH and L/L_Edd, by focusing on sources where one of these lines is observed together with Hbeta. We present a new, luminosity-dependent bolometric correction for the monochromatic lu…
We study the internal kinematics of galaxy clusters in the region beyond the sphere of virialization. Galaxies around a virialized cluster are infalling towards the cluster centre with a non-zero mean radial velocity. We develop a new formalism for describing the dynamical state of clusters, by generalizing the standard Jeans formalism with the inclusion of the peculiar infall motions of galaxies and the Hubble expansion as well as the contributions due to background cosmology. Using empirical fits to the radial profiles of density, mean radial velocity and velocity anisotropy of both a stacke…
The core structure of galaxy clusters is fundamentally important. Even though self-gravitating systems have no stable equilibrium state due to their negative heat capacity, numerical simulations find density profiles which are universal in the sense that they are fairly flat within a scale radius and gradually steepen farther outward, asymptotically approaching a logarithmic slope of $\approx-3$ near the virial radius. We argue that the reason for the formation of this profile is not satisfactorily understood. The ratio between the virial radius and the scale radius, the so-called concentratio…
Mass modelling of spherical systems through internal motions is hampered by the mass/velocity anisotropy (VA) degeneracy inherent in the Jeans equation, as well as the lack of techniques that are both fast and adaptable to realistic systems. A new fast method, called MAMPOSSt, which performs a maximum likelihood fit of the distribution of observed tracers in projected phase space, is developed and thoroughly tested. MAMPOSSt assumes a shape for the gravitational potential, but instead of postulating a shape for the distribution function in terms of energy and angular momentum, or supposing Gau…
