We use the Random Dispersion Approximation (RDA) to study the Mott-Hubbard transition in the Hubbard model at half band filling. The RDA becomes exact for the Hubbard model in infinite dimensions. We implement the RDA on finite chains and employ the Lanczos exact diagonalization method in real space to calculate the ground-state energy, the average double occupancy, the charge gap, the momentum distribution, and the quasi-particle weight. We find a satisfactory agreement with perturbative results in the weak- and strong-coupling limits. A straightforward extrapolation of the RDA data for $L\leq 14$ lattice results in a continuous Mott-Hubbard transition at $U_{\rm c}\approx W$. We discuss the significance of a possible signature of a coexistence region between insulating and metallic ground states in the RDA that would correspond to the scenario of a discontinuous Mott-Hubbard transition as found in numerical investigations of the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory for the Hubbard model.
Using cluster perturbation theory, we explain the origin of the strongly dispersive feature found at high binding energy in the spectral function of the Hubbard model. By comparing the Hubbard and $t\small{-}J\small{-} 3s$ model spectra, we show that this dispersion does not originate from either coupling to spin fluctuations ($\propto\! J$) or the free hopping ($\propto\! t$). Instead, it should be attributed to a long-range, correlated hopping $\propto\! t^2/U$, which allows an effectively free motion of the hole within the same antiferromagnetic sublattice. This origin explains both the for…
We compute dynamic spin susceptibilities in the two-dimensional Hubbard model using the method of Dual Fermions and provide comparison to lattice Monte Carlo and cluster dynamical mean field theory. We examine the energy dispersion identified by peaks in ${\rm Im}χ(ω,q)$ which define spin modes and compare the exchange scale and magnon dispersion to neutron experiments on the parent La$_2$CuO$_4$ cuprate. We present the evolution of the spin excitations as a function of Hubbard interaction strengths and doping and explore the particle-hole asymmetry of the spin excitations. We also study the c…
We introduce the concept of self-energy dispersion as an error bound on local theories and apply it to the two-dimensional Hubbard model on the square lattice at half-filling. Since the self-energy has no single-particle analog and is not directly measurable in experiments, its general behavior as a function of momentum is an open question. In this article we benchmark the momentum dependence with the Two-Particle Self-Consistent approach together with analytical and numerical considerations and we show that through the addition of a local single-particle potential to the Hubbard model the sel…
Cluster perturbation theory is applied to the two-dimensional Hubbard $t-t'-t''-U$ model to obtain doping and temperature dependent electronic spectral function with $4 \times 4$ and 12-site clusters. It is shown that evolution of the pseudogap and electronic dispersion with doping and temperature is similar and in both cases it is significantly influenced by spin-spin short-range correlations. When short-range magnetic order is weakened by doping or temperature and Hubbard-I like electronic dispersion becomes more pronounced, the Fermi arc turns into large Fermi surface and the pseudogap clos…
Ferromagnetism in the t-t' Hubbard model: interplay of lattice, band dispersion, and interaction effects studied within a Goldstone-mode preserving scheme
We study the spectral function of the 2D Hubbard model using cluster perturbation theory, and the density matrix renormalization group as a cluster solver. We reconstruct the two-dimensional dispersion at, and away from half-filling using 2xL ladders, with L up to 80 sites, yielding results with unprecedented resolution in excellent agreement with quantum Monte Carlo. The main features of the spectrum can be described with a mean-field dispersion, while kinks and pseudogap traced back to scattering between spin and charge degrees of freedom.
Within the 1D Hubbard model linear closed chains with various numbers of sites are considered in Self Consistent Random Phase Approximation (SCRPA). Excellent results with a minimal numerical effort are obtained for 2+4n sites cases, confirming earlier results with this theory for other models. However, the 4n sites cases need further considerations. SCRPA solves the two sites problem exactly. It therefore contains the two electrons and high density Fermi gas limits correctly.
We study the 2D Hubbard model using the Composite Operator Method within a novel three-pole approximation. Motivated by the long-standing experimental puzzle of the single-particle properties of the underdoped cuprates, we include in the operatorial basis, together with the usual Hubbard operators, a field describing the electronic transitions dressed by the nearest-neighbor spin fluctuations, which play a crucial role in the unconventional behavior of the Fermi surface and of the electronic dispersion. Then, we adopt this approximation to study the single-particle properties in the strong cou…
Understanding spin excitations and their connection to unconventional superconductivity have remained a central issue since the discovery of the cuprates. Direct measurement of the dynamical spin structure factor in the parent compounds can provide key information on important interactions relevant in the doped regime, and variations in the magnon dispersion have been linked closely to differences in crystal structure between families of cuprate compounds. Here, we elucidate the relationship between spin excitations and various controlling factors thought to be significant in high-$T_c$ materi…
The parquet approach to vertex corrections is unbiased but computationally demanding. Most applications are therefore restricted to small cluster sizes or rely on various simplifying approximations. We have recently shown that the bosonization of the parquet diagrams provides interpretative and algorithmic advantages over the original purely fermionic formulation. Here we present first results of the numerical implementation of this method by applying it to the half-filled Hubbard model on the square lattice at weak coupling. The improved algorithmic performance allows us to evaluate the parqu…
We perform a detailed study of the phase transitions and mechanisms of electron localization in the extended Hubbard model using the dynamical cluster approximation on a $2\times 2$ cluster. We explore the interplay of charge order and Mott physics. We find that a nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction $V$ causes "screening" effects close to the Mott phase transition, pushing the phase boundary to larger values of $U$. We also demonstrate the different effects of $V$ on correlations in metallic and insulating regimes and document the different correlation aspects of charge order and Mott states.
We have implemented the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A) in its full parquet-based version to include spatial correlations on all length scales and in {\sl all} scattering channels. The algorithm is applied to study the electronic self-energies and the spectral properties of finite-size one-dimensional Hubbard models with periodic boundary conditions (nanoscopic Hubbard rings). From a methodological point of view, our calculations and their comparison to the results obtained within dynamical mean-field theory, plain parquet approximation, and the exact numerical solution, allow us to eva…
The canonical one-band Hubbard model is studied using a computational method that mixes the Monte Carlo procedure with the mean field approximation. This technique allows us to incorporate thermal fluctuations and the development of short-range magnetic order above ordering temperatures, contrary to the crude finite-temperature Hartree-Fock approximation, which incorrectly predicts a Néel temperature $T_N$ that grows linearly with the Hubbard $U/t$. The effective model studied here contains quantum and classical degrees of freedom. It thus belongs to the "spin fermion" model family widely empl…
We compute the frequency dependent conductivity of the two dimensional square lattice Hubbard model at zero temperature as a function of density to second order in the interaction strength, and compare the results to the predictions of single-site dynamical mean field theory computed at the same order. We find that despite the neglect of vertex corrections, the single site dynamical mean field approximation produces semiquantitatively accurate results for most carrier concentrations, but fails qualitatively for the nearly empty or nearly filled band cases where the theory exhibits an emergent …
We study the lattice dynamics of antiferromagnetic transition-metal oxides by using self-consistent Hubbard functionals. We calculate the ground states of the oxides with the on-site and intersite Hubbard interactions determined self-consistently within the framework of density functional theory. The on-site and intersite Hubbard terms fix the errors associated with the electron self-interaction in the local and semilocal functionals. Inclusion of the intersite Hubbard terms in addition to the on-site Hubbard terms produces accurate phonon dispersion of the transition-metal oxides. Calculated …
In this work, we adapt the formalism of the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A), a diagrammatic approach including many-body correlations beyond the dynamical mean-field theory, to the case of attractive onsite interactions. We start by exploiting the ladder approximation of the D$Γ$A scheme, in order to derive the corresponding equations for the non-local self-energy and vertex functions of the attractive Hubbard model. Second, we prove the validity of our derivation by showing that the results obtained in the particle-hole symmetric case fully preserve the exact mapping between the attrac…
Recently, diagrammatic extensions of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) have been proposed for including short- and long-range correlations beyond DMFT on an equal footing. We employ one of these, the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A), and study the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice. We define two transition lines in the phase diagram which correspond, respectively, to the opening of the gap in the nodal direction and throughout the Fermi surface. Our self-energy data show that the evolution between the two regimes occurs in a gradual way (crossover) and also that at low e…
We have studied the impact of non-local electronic correlations at all length scales on the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition in the unfrustrated two-dimensional Hubbard model. Combining dynamical vertex approximation, lattice quantum Monte-Carlo and variational cluster approximation, we demonstrate that scattering at long-range fluctuations, i.e., Slater-like paramagnons, opens a spectral gap at weak-to-intermediate coupling -- irrespectively of the preformation of localized or short-ranged magnetic moments. This is the reason, why the two-dimensional Hubbard model is insulating at low …
The interplay between the Kondo effect and magnetic ordering driven by the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction is studied within the two-dimensional Hubbard-Kondo lattice model. In addition to the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction, $J_\perp$, between the localized and the conduction electrons, this model also contains the local repulsion, $U$, between the conduction electrons. We use variational cluster approximation to investigate the competition between the antiferromagnetic phase, the Kondo singlet phase, and a ferrimagnetic phase on square lattice. At half-filling, the Néel anti…
