A quantum critical point (QCP), separating the non-Fermi liquid region from the Fermi liquid, exists in the phase diagram of the 2D Hubbard model [Vidhyadhiraja et. al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 206407 (2009)]. Due to the vanishing of the critical temperature associated with a phase separation transition, the QCP is characterized by a vanishing quasiparticle weight. Near the QCP, the pairing is enhanced since the real part of the bare d-wave p-p susceptibility exhibits algebraic divergence with decreasing temperature, replacing the logarithmic divergence found in a Fermi liquid [Yang et. al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 047004 (2011)]. In this paper we explore the single-particle and transport properties near the QCP. We focus mainly on a van Hove singularity (vHS) coming from the relatively flat dispersion that crosses the Fermi level near the quantum critical filling. The flat part of the dispersion orthogonal to the antinodal direction remains pinned near the Fermi level for a range of doping that increases when we include a negative next-near-neighbor hopping t' in the model. For comparison, we calculate the bare d-wave pairing susceptibility for non-interacting models with the usual two-dimensional tight binding dispersion and a hypothetical quartic dispersion. We find that neither model yields a vHS that completely describes the critical algebraic behavior of the bare d-wave pairing susceptibility. The resistivity, thermal conductivity, thermopower, and the Wiedemann-Franz Law are examined in the Fermi liquid, marginal Fermi liquid, and pseudo-gap doping regions. A negative next-near-neighbor hopping t' increases the doping region with marginal Fermi liquid character. Both T and negative t' are relevant variables for the QCP, and both the transport and the motion of the vHS with filling suggest that they are qualitatively similar in their effect.
We propose a novel parametrization of the four-point vertex function in the one-loop one-particle irreducible renormalization group (RG) scheme for fermions. It is based on a decomposition of the effective two-fermion interaction into fermion bilinears that interact via exchange bosons. Besides being more efficient than previous N-patch schemes, this parametrization also reduces the ambiguity of introducing boson fields. We apply this parametrization to the two-dimensional (t,t')-Hubbard model using a novel $Ω$-frequency regularization.
The t-t' Hubbard model for the Fermi level near the Van Hove singularity is considered within the renormalization group and parquet approaches. The interplay of ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and superconducting channels is investigated, and the phase diagram of the model is constructed. In comparison with previous approaches, the account of ferromagnetic fluctuations suppresses superconducting pairing and, vice versa, the influence of the Cooper channel decreases the Curie temperature, so that the Stoner criterion is inapplicable even qualitatively.
We study the impact of the fermionic self-energy on one-loop functional renormalization group flows of the two-dimensional $t$-$t'$ Hubbard model, with emphasis on electronic densities away from van Hove filling. In the presence of antiferromagnetic hot spots, antiferromagnetic fluctuations lead to a flattening of the Fermi surface, shift magnetic phase boundaries and significantly enhance critical scales. We trace back this effect to the presence of a magnetic first order transition. For some parameters, the first order character of the latter is reduced by self-energy effects. For reliably d…
The proximity of the Fermi surface to van Hove singularities drastically enhances interaction effects and leads to essentially new physics. In this work we address the formation of flat bands ("Fermi condensation") within the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice and provide a detailed analysis from an analytical and numerical perspective. To describe the effect we consider both weak-coupling and strong-coupling approaches, namely the renormalization group and dual fermion methods. It is shown that the band flattening is driven by correlations and is well pronounced even at sufficiently high…
We investigate the magnetic instabilities of the nondegenerate (s-band) and a degenerate (d-band) Hubbard model in two dimensions using many-body effects due to the particle-particle diagrams and Hund's rule local correlations. The density of states and the position of Van Hove singularity change depending on the value of next-nearest neighbor hopping t'. The Stoner parameter is strongly reduced in the s-band case, and ferromagnetism survives only if electron density is small, and the band is almost flat at small momenta due to next-nearest neighbor hopping. In contrast, for the d-band case th…

When a van-Hove singularity is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level, the electronic scattering rate acquires a non-analytic contribution. This invalidates basic assumptions of Fermi liquid theory and within perturbative treatments leads to a non-Fermi liquid self-energy and transport properties.Such anomalies are shown to also occur in the strongly correlated metallic state. We consider the Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice with nearest and next-nearest neighbor hopping within the single-site dynamical mean-field theory. At temperatures on the order of the low-energy scal…
We study the weak-coupling limit of the $t-t^\prime-U$ Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice using a direct perturbative approach. Aided by symbolic computational tools, we compute the longitudinal density-density correlation functions in the $χ_{\uparrow \uparrow}$ and $χ_{\uparrow \downarrow}$ basis from which we can obtain the dynamical spin and charge susceptibilities at arbitrary doping and temperature. We find that for non-zero $t^\prime$, the zero frequency commensurate $\mathbf{q} = (π, π)$ spin and charge excitations are each strongest at different densities and we observe…
The Hubbard model on the kagome lattice is presently often considered as a minimal model to describe the rich low-temperature behavior of AV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ compounds (with A=K, Rb, Cs), including charge-density waves (CDWs), superconductivity, and possibly broken time-reversal symmetry. Here, we investigate, via variational Jastrow-Slater wave functions, the properties of its ground state when both onsite $U$ and nearest-neighbor $V$ Coulomb repulsions are considered at the van Hove filling. Our calculations reveal the presence of different interaction-driven CDWs and, contrary to previous reno…
We use a novel temperature-flow renormalization group technique to analyze magnetic and superconducting instabilities in the two-dimensional t-t' Hubbard model for particle densities close to the van Hove filling as a function of the next-nearest neighbor hopping t'. In the one-loop flow at the van Hove filling, the characteristic temperature for the flow to strong coupling is suppressed drastically around t'_c approx. -0.33t, suggesting a quantum critical point between d-wave pairing at moderate t'>t'_c and ferromagnetism for t'<t'_c. Upon increasing the particle density in the latter regime …
We devise a computational approach to the Hubbard model that captures the strong coupling dynamics arising when the Fermi level is at a Van Hove singularity in the density of states. We rely on an approximate degeneracy among the many-body states accounting for the main instabilities of the system (antiferromagnetism, d-wave superconductivity). The Fermi line turns out to be deformed in a manner consistent with the pinning of the Fermi level to the Van Hove singularity. For a doping rate $δ\sim 0.2$, the ground state is characterized by d-wave symmetry, quasiparticles gapped only at the saddle…
We study quantum oscillations for a system of fermionic and bosonic dimers and compare the results to those experimentally observed in the cuprate superconductors in their underdoped regime. Based on gauge invariance, we argue that the charge carriers obey the Onsager quantization condition and quantum oscillations take on a Lifshitz-Kosevich form. We obtain the effective mass and find good qualitative agreement with experiments if we tune the model to the point where the observed mass divergence at optimum doping is associated to a van Hove singularity at which four free-dimer Fermi pockets t…
We apply a wilsonian renormalization group approach to the continuum limit of the attractive $t-t'$ Hubbard model, taken when the Fermi level is at the Van Hove singularity of the density of states. The model has well-defined scaling properties and the effective couplings display an unbounded flow in the infrared. We determine the leading instabilities by computing the different response functions up to $t' = 0.5 t$. The phase diagram shows a large boundary between superconducting and charge-density-wave phases, that merge in a triple point with a phase separation instability. The latter is re…
We propose a new parametrization of the four-point vertex function in the one-loop one-particle irreducible renormalization group (RG) scheme for fermions. It is based on a decomposition of the effective two-fermion interaction into fermion bilinears that interact via exchange bosons. The numerical computation of the RG flow of the boson propagators reproduces the leading weak coupling instabilities of the two-dimensional Hubbard model at Van Hove filling, as they were previously obtained by a temperature RG flow. Instead of regularizing with temperature, we here use a soft frequency $Ω$-regul…
We present a stability analysis of the two-dimensional t-t' Hubbard model for various values of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping t', and electron concentrations close to the Van Hove filling by means of the flow equation method. For t' > -t/3 a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave Pomeranchuk instability dominates (apart from antiferromagnetism at small t'). At t' < -t/3 the leading instabilities are a g-wave Pomeranchuk instability and p-wave particle-hole instability in the triplet channel at temperatures T < 0.15t, and an s^*-magnetic phase for T > 0.15t; upon increasing the electron concentration the triplet…
Using the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) we study the paramagnetic phase of the Hubbard model with the density of states (DOS) corresponding to the three-dimensional cubic lattice and the two-dimensional square lattice, as well as a DOS with inverse square root singularity. We show that the electron correlations rapidly smooth out the square-root van Hove singularities (kinks) in the spectral function for the 3D lattice and that the Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT) as well as the magnetic-field-induced MIT differ only little from the well-known results for the Bethe lattice. The conse…
We analyze effective d-wave interactions in the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model at weak coupling and small to moderate doping. The interactions are computed from a renormalization group flow. Attractive d-wave interactions are generated via antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the pairing and charge channels. Above Van Hove filling, the d-wave charge interaction is maximal at incommensurate diagonal wave vectors, corresponding to nematic fluctuations with a diagonal modulation. Below Van Hove filling a modulation along the crystal axes can be favored. The nematic fluctuations are enha…
Bad-Metal (BM) behavior featuring linear temperature dependence of the resistivity extending to well above the Mott-Ioffe-Regel (MIR) limit is often viewed as one of the key unresolved signatures of strong correlation. Here we associate the BM behavior with the Mott quantum criticality by examining a fully frustrated Hubbard model where all long-range magnetic orders are suppressed, and the Mott problem can be rigorously solved through Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. We show that for the doped Mott insulator regime, the coexistence dome and the associated first-order Mott metal-insulator transiti…
The charge instabilities of electron systems in the square lattice are analyzed near the Van Hove singularity by means of a wilsonian renormalization group approach. We show that the method preserves the spin rotational invariance at all scales, allowing a rigorous determination of spin and charge instabilities of the $t-t'$ Hubbard model. For $t'$ above $\approx 0.276 t$, repulsive interactions fall into two different universality classes. One of them has nonsingular response functions in the charge sector, while the other is characterized by the splitting of the Van Hove singularity. At the …
We present evidence for Mott quantum criticality in an anisotropic two-dimensional system of coupled Hubbard chains at half-filling. In this scenario emerging from variational cluster approximation and cluster dynamical mean-field theory, the interchain hopping $t_{\perp}$ acts as a control parameter driving the second-order critical end point $T_c$ of the metal-insulator transition down to zero at $t_{\perp}^{c}/t\simeq 0.2$. Below $t_{\perp}^{c}$, the volume of the hole and electron Fermi pockets of a compensated metal vanishes continuously at the Mott transition. Above $t_{\perp}^{c}$, the …
Using large-scale dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the Lifshitz transition of the two dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping ($t'$), chemical potential and temperature as control parameters. At $t'\le0$, we identify a line of Lifshitz transition points associated with a change of the Fermi surface topology at zero temperature. In the overdoped region, the Fermi surface is complete and electron-like; across the Lifshitz transition, the Fermi surface becomes hole-like and develops a pseudogap. At (or very close to) the Lifshitz transition points, …
We investigate the competing Fermi surface instabilities in the Kagome tight-binding model. Specifically, we consider onsite and short-range Hubbard interactions in the vicinity of van Hove filling of the dispersive Kagome bands where the Fermiology promotes the joint effect of enlarged density of states and nesting. The sublattice interference mechanism [Kiesel and Thomale, Phys. Rev. B Rapid Comm., in press.] allows us to explain the intricate interplay between ferromagnetic fluctuations and other ordering tendencies. On the basis of functional renormalization group used to obtain an adequat…
We investigate magnetic and superconducting instabilities of the two-dimensional t-t' Hubbard model on a square lattice at Van Hove densities from weak to intermediate coupling by means of the two-particle self-consistent approach. We find that as the next-nearest-neighbor hopping |t'| increases from zero, the leading instability is towards an incommensurate spin-density wave whose wave vector moves slowly away from (pi, pi). For intermediate values of |t'|, the leading instability is towards d_{x2-y2}-wave superconductivity. For larger |t'|>0.33t, there are signs of a crossover to ferromagnet…
We present a correlated {\it ab initio} description of the paramagnetic phase of Tl$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$, employing a combined local density approximation (LDA) with multiorbital dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) treatment. We show that the insulating state observed in this colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) pyrochlore is determined by strong Mn intra- and inter-orbital local electron-electron interactions. Hybridization effects are reinforced by the correlation-induced spectral weight transfer. Our result coincides with optical conductivity measurements, whose low energy features are remarkably acco…
The phase diagram of the two-dimensional extended one-band U-V-J Hubbard model is considered within a mean-field approximation and two- and many-patch renormalization group (RG) approaches near the van Hove band fillings. At small t' and J>0 mean-field and many-patch RG approaches give similar results for the leading spin-density-wave (SDW) instability, while the two-patch RG approach, which predicts a wide region of charge-flux (CF) phase becomes unreliable due to nesting effect. At the same time, there is a complex competition between SDW, CF phases, and d-wave superconductivity in two- and …
We study electric transport near the Mott metal-insulator transition in a triangular-lattice Hubbard model at half filling. We calculate optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ based on a cellular dynamical mean field theory including vertex corrections inside the cluster. Near the Mott critical end point, a Drude analysis in the metallic region suggests that the change in the Drude weight is important rather than that in the transport scattering rate for the Mott transition. In the insulating region, there emerges an "ingap" peak in $σ(ω)$ at low $ω$ near the Mott transition, and this smoothly connects t…
We study a ferromagnetic tendency in the two-dimensional Hubbard model near van Hove filling by using a functional renormalization-group method. We compute temperature dependences of magnetic susceptibilities including incommensurate magnetism. The ferromagnetic tendency is found to occur in a dome-shaped region around van Hove filling with an asymmetric property: incommensurate magnetism is favored near the edge of the dome above van Hove filling whereas a first-order-like transition to the ferromagnetic ground state is expected below van Hove filling. The dome-shaped phase diagram is well ca…
We study the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice in the vicinity of the quantum critical point by means of a multiband formulation of the Dual Fermion approach. Beyond the strong local correlations of the dynamical mean field, critical fluctuations on all length scales are included by means of a ladder diagram summation. Analysis of the susceptibility yields an estimate of the critical interaction strength of the quantum phase transition from a paramagnetic semimetal to an antiferromagnetic insulator, in good agreement to other numerical methods. We further estimate the crossover temperatur…
Recent studies of electrical transport, both theoretical and experimental, near the bandwidth-tuned Mott metal-insulator transition have uncovered apparent quantum critical scaling of the electrical resistivity at elevated temperatures, despite the fact that the actual low-temperature phase transition is of first order. This raises the question whether there is a hidden Mott quantum critical point. Here we argue that the dynamical mean-field theory of the Hubbard model admits, in the low-temperature limit, asymptotically scale-invariant (i.e. power-law) solutions, corresponding to the metastab…
We study the occurrence and the origin of ferromagnetic fluctuations in the longitudinal spin susceptibility of the $t$-$t'$-Rashba-Hubbard model on the square lattice. The combined effect of the second-neighbor hopping $t'$ and the spin-orbit coupling leads to ferromagnetic fluctuations in a broad filling region. The spin-orbit coupling splits the energy bands, leading to two van Hove fillings, where the sheets of the Fermi surface change their topology. Between these two van Hove fillings the model shows ferromagnetic fluctuations. We find that these ferromagnetic fluctuations originate from…
The quasistatic approach is used to analyze the criterion of ferromagnetism for two-dimensional (2D) systems with the Fermi level near Van Hove (VH) singularities of the electron spectrum. It is shown that the spectrum of spin excitations (paramagnons) is positively defined when the interaction between electrons and paramagnons, determined by the Hubbard on-site repulsion U, is sufficiently large. Due to incommensurate spin fluctuations near the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition, the critical interaction Uc remains finite at VH filling and exceeds considerably its value obtained from the …
We consider the two-dimensional t-t' Hubbard model with the Fermi level being close to the van Hove singularities. The phase diagram of the model is discussed. In a broad energy region the self-energy at the singularity points has a nearly-linear energy dependence. The corresponding correction to the density of states is proportional to ln^3(e). Both real- and imaginary part of the self-energy increase near the quantum phase transition into magnetically ordered or superconducting phase which implies violation of the Fermi-liquid behavior. The application of the results to cuprates is discussed…
We study electric transport near the Mott metal-insulator transition. Optical conductivity of the half-filled Hubbard model on a triangular lattice is calculated based on a cellular dynamical mean field theory including vertex corrections inside the cluster. By investigating the spectrum at low frequencies, we find that a Drude peak on the metallic side smoothly connects to an "ingap" peak on the insulating side. The optical weight of these peaks exhibits a critical behavior with power-law near the Mott critical end point, $|D-D^*|\propto|U-U^*|^{1/δ}$. We find that the critical exponent $1/δ$…
Transport measurements on the cuprates suggest the presence of a quantum critical point hiding underneath the superconducting dome near optimal hole doping. We provide numerical evidence in support of this scenario via a dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo study of the extended two-dimensional Hubbard model. Single particle quantities, such as the spectral function, the quasiparticle weight and the entropy, display a crossover between two distinct ground states: a Fermi liquid at low filling and a non-Fermi liquid with a pseudogap at high filling. Both states are found to cross over to a mar…
We investigate the two-dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping, t', using the dynamical cluster approximation. We confirm the existence of a first-order phase-separation transition terminating at a second-order critical point at filling n_c(t') and temperature T_ps(t'). We find that as t' approaches zero, T_ps(t') vanishes and n_c(t') approaches the filling associated with the quantum critical point separating the Fermi liquid from the pseudogap phase. We propose that the quantum critical point under the superconducting dome is the zero-temperature limit of the line of sec…
We use the quasistatic approach to analyze the criterion of ferromagnetism for two-dimensional (2D) systems with the Fermi level near Van Hove singularities (VHS) of the electronic spectrum. It is shown that the spectrum of spin excitations (paramagnons) is positively defined when the interaction I between electrons and paramagnons, which corresponds to the Hubbard on-site repulsion U, is sufficiently large. The critical interactions I_c and U_c remain finite at Van Hove filling and exceed considerably their values obtained from the Stoner criterion due to incommensurate spin fluctuations whic…
We derive exact expressions for the local entanglement entropy E in the ground state of the one-dimensional Hubbard model at a quantum phase transition driven by a change in magnetic field h or chemical potential u. The leading divergences of dE/dh and dE/du are shown to be directly related to those of the zero-temperature spin and charge susceptibilities. Logarithmic corrections to scaling signal a change in the number of local states accessible to the system as it undergoes the transition.
We study dynamical phase transitions from antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic states driven by an interaction quench in the fermionic Hubbard model using the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory. We identify two dynamical transition points where the relaxation behavior qualitatively changes: one corresponds to the thermal phase transition at which the order parameter decays critically slowly in a power law $\propto t^{-1/2}$, and the other is connected to the existence of nonthermal antiferromagnetic order in systems with effective temperature above the thermal critical temperature. The fr…
We examine the quasiparticle lifetime and spectral weight near the Fermi surface in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. We use the FLEX approximation to self-consistently generate the Matsubara Green's functions and then we analytically continue to the real axis to obtain the quasiparticle spectral functions. We compare the spectral functions found in the nearest neighbor hopping only Hubbard model with those found when second neighbor hopping is included. This separates the effects of nesting, the Van Hove singularity and the short-ranged antiferromagnetic correlations. The quasiparticle scatt…
The extent to which quantum criticality drives the physics of iron pnictides is a central question in the field. Earlier theoretical considerations were based on an effective field theory, and the proposed realization in P-doped iron arsenides has received extensive experimental evidence. To connect the quantum critical behavior with the underlying electronic physics, it is important to analyze it within microscopic models. Here, we do so for a multi-orbital model containing both Hubbard and Hund's interactions, by a variational Monte Carlo method based on Jastrow-Slater wave functions that al…
The first indication of a pseudogap in cuprates came from a sudden decrease of NMR Knight shift at a doping-dependent temperature $T^*(δ)$. Since then, experiments have found phase transitions at a lower $T^*_\text{phase}(δ)$. Using plaquette cellular dynamical mean-field for the square-lattice Hubbard model at high temperature, where the results are reliable, we show that $T^*(δ)$ shares many features of $T^*_\text{phase}(δ)$. The remarkable agreement with several experiments, including quantum critical behavior of the electronic specific heat, supports the view that the pseudogap is controll…
Pseudogap, Fermi liquid, Van Hove singularity and maxima of the compressibility and of the Knight shift as a function of doping in the two-dimensional Hubbard model
Interplay of Pomeranchuk instability (spontaneous symmetry breaking of the Fermi surface) and d-wave superconductivity is studied for the repulsive Hubbard model on the square lattice with the dynamical mean field theory combined with the fluctuation exchange approximation (FLEX+DMFT). We show that the four-fold symmetric Fermi surface becomes unstable against a spontaneous distortion into two-fold near the van Hove filling, where the symmetry of superconductivity coexisting with the Pomeranchuk distorted Fermi surface is modified from the d-wave pairing to (d+s)-wave. By systematically shifti…
We investigate the possibility of ferromagnetic ordering in the non-degenerate Hubbard model on the face-centered cubic lattice within the functional renormalization group technique using temperature as a scale parameter. We assume the relations between nearest, next-nearest, and next-next-nearest hopping parameters providing higher order (giant) van Hove singularity of the density of states. The ferromagnetic instability formation with lowering temperature is described consistently in the one-loop approximation for a one-particle irreducible vertex of two-particle electron interaction. The ch…
We numerically investigate the critical behavior of the Hubbard model on the honeycomb and the $π$-flux lattice, which exhibits a direct transition from a Dirac semimetal to an antiferromagnetically ordered Mott insulator. We use projective auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations and a careful finite-size scaling analysis that exploits approximately improved renormalization-group-invariant observables. This approach, which is successfully verified for the three-dimensional XY transition of the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model, allows us to extract estimates for the critical couplings and the cr…
Motivated by the recent resurgence of interest in topological superconductivity, we study in this paper superconducting pairing instabilities of the hole-doped Rashba-Hubbard model on the square lattice with first- and second-neighbor hopping. Within a weak-coupling approach based on the random phase approximation, we compute the spin-fluctuation mediated paring interactions as a function of spin-orbit coupling and hole doping. Rashba spin-orbit coupling splits the spin degeneracies of the bands, which leads to two van Hove singularities at two different fillings. We find that for a broad dopi…
Phase diagrams of the two-dimensional one-band t-t' Hubbard model are obtained within the two-patch and the temperature-cutoff many-patch renormalization group approach. At small t' and at van Hove band fillings antiferromagnetism dominates, while with increasing t' or changing filling antiferromagnetism is replaced by d-wave superconductivity. Near t'=t/2 and close to van Hove band fillings the system is unstable towards ferromagnetism. Away from van Hove band fillings this ferromagnetic instability is replaced by a region with dominating triplet p-wave superconducting correlations. The resul…
The deformation of the Fermi surface induced by Coulomb interactions is investigated in the t-t'-Hubbard model. The interplay of the local U and extended V interactions is analyzed. It is found that exchange interactions V enhance small anisotropies producing deformations of the Fermi surface which break the point group symmetry of the square lattice at the Van Hove filling. This Pomeranchuck instability competes with ferromagnetism and is suppressed at a critical value of U(V). The interaction V renormalizes the t' parameter to smaller values what favours nesting. It also induces changes on t…
We calculate the magnetic phase diagram of the Hubbard model for a Bethe lattice with nearest neighbour (NN) hopping $t_1$ and next nearest neighbour (NNN) hopping $t_2$ in the limit of infinite coordination. We use the amplitude $t_2/t_1$ of the NNN hopping to tune the density of states (DOS) of the non-interacting system from a situation with particle-hole symmetry to an asymmetric one with van-Hove singularities at the lower ($t_2/t_1>0$) respectively upper ($t_2/t_1<0$) band edge for large enough $|t_2/t_1|$. For this strongly asymmetric situation we find rather extended parameter regions …
