We study the weak-coupling limit of the $t-t^\prime-U$ Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice using a direct perturbative approach. Aided by symbolic computational tools, we compute the longitudinal density-density correlation functions in the $χ_{\uparrow \uparrow}$ and $χ_{\uparrow \downarrow}$ basis from which we can obtain the dynamical spin and charge susceptibilities at arbitrary doping and temperature. We find that for non-zero $t^\prime$, the zero frequency commensurate $\mathbf{q} = (π, π)$ spin and charge excitations are each strongest at different densities and we observe a clear behavioral change that appears tied to the van Hove singularity of the non-interacting dispersion upon which the perturbative expansion is built. We find a strongly reduced compressibility in the vicinity of the van Hove singularity as well as a behavioral change in the double occupancy. For finite $t^\prime$, the observed van Hove singularity occurs away from half-filling leading us to conclude that that this reduction in compressibility is distinct from Mott insulating physics that one expects in the strong-coupling regime. We compute the full dynamical spin and charge excitations and observe distinct structure for electron and hole doped scenarios in agreement with experiments on cuprate materials. Finally, we observe a peculiar splitting in spin and charge excitations in the vicinity of the van Hove singularity, the origin of which is traced to a splitting near the bottom of the band.
We propose a novel parametrization of the four-point vertex function in the one-loop one-particle irreducible renormalization group (RG) scheme for fermions. It is based on a decomposition of the effective two-fermion interaction into fermion bilinears that interact via exchange bosons. Besides being more efficient than previous N-patch schemes, this parametrization also reduces the ambiguity of introducing boson fields. We apply this parametrization to the two-dimensional (t,t')-Hubbard model using a novel $Ω$-frequency regularization.
The t-t' Hubbard model for the Fermi level near the Van Hove singularity is considered within the renormalization group and parquet approaches. The interplay of ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and superconducting channels is investigated, and the phase diagram of the model is constructed. In comparison with previous approaches, the account of ferromagnetic fluctuations suppresses superconducting pairing and, vice versa, the influence of the Cooper channel decreases the Curie temperature, so that the Stoner criterion is inapplicable even qualitatively.
We study the impact of the fermionic self-energy on one-loop functional renormalization group flows of the two-dimensional $t$-$t'$ Hubbard model, with emphasis on electronic densities away from van Hove filling. In the presence of antiferromagnetic hot spots, antiferromagnetic fluctuations lead to a flattening of the Fermi surface, shift magnetic phase boundaries and significantly enhance critical scales. We trace back this effect to the presence of a magnetic first order transition. For some parameters, the first order character of the latter is reduced by self-energy effects. For reliably d…
The proximity of the Fermi surface to van Hove singularities drastically enhances interaction effects and leads to essentially new physics. In this work we address the formation of flat bands ("Fermi condensation") within the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice and provide a detailed analysis from an analytical and numerical perspective. To describe the effect we consider both weak-coupling and strong-coupling approaches, namely the renormalization group and dual fermion methods. It is shown that the band flattening is driven by correlations and is well pronounced even at sufficiently high…
We investigate the magnetic instabilities of the nondegenerate (s-band) and a degenerate (d-band) Hubbard model in two dimensions using many-body effects due to the particle-particle diagrams and Hund's rule local correlations. The density of states and the position of Van Hove singularity change depending on the value of next-nearest neighbor hopping t'. The Stoner parameter is strongly reduced in the s-band case, and ferromagnetism survives only if electron density is small, and the band is almost flat at small momenta due to next-nearest neighbor hopping. In contrast, for the d-band case th…

When a van-Hove singularity is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level, the electronic scattering rate acquires a non-analytic contribution. This invalidates basic assumptions of Fermi liquid theory and within perturbative treatments leads to a non-Fermi liquid self-energy and transport properties.Such anomalies are shown to also occur in the strongly correlated metallic state. We consider the Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice with nearest and next-nearest neighbor hopping within the single-site dynamical mean-field theory. At temperatures on the order of the low-energy scal…
The Hubbard model on the kagome lattice is presently often considered as a minimal model to describe the rich low-temperature behavior of AV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ compounds (with A=K, Rb, Cs), including charge-density waves (CDWs), superconductivity, and possibly broken time-reversal symmetry. Here, we investigate, via variational Jastrow-Slater wave functions, the properties of its ground state when both onsite $U$ and nearest-neighbor $V$ Coulomb repulsions are considered at the van Hove filling. Our calculations reveal the presence of different interaction-driven CDWs and, contrary to previous reno…
We use a novel temperature-flow renormalization group technique to analyze magnetic and superconducting instabilities in the two-dimensional t-t' Hubbard model for particle densities close to the van Hove filling as a function of the next-nearest neighbor hopping t'. In the one-loop flow at the van Hove filling, the characteristic temperature for the flow to strong coupling is suppressed drastically around t'_c approx. -0.33t, suggesting a quantum critical point between d-wave pairing at moderate t'>t'_c and ferromagnetism for t'<t'_c. Upon increasing the particle density in the latter regime …
We devise a computational approach to the Hubbard model that captures the strong coupling dynamics arising when the Fermi level is at a Van Hove singularity in the density of states. We rely on an approximate degeneracy among the many-body states accounting for the main instabilities of the system (antiferromagnetism, d-wave superconductivity). The Fermi line turns out to be deformed in a manner consistent with the pinning of the Fermi level to the Van Hove singularity. For a doping rate $δ\sim 0.2$, the ground state is characterized by d-wave symmetry, quasiparticles gapped only at the saddle…
We apply a wilsonian renormalization group approach to the continuum limit of the attractive $t-t'$ Hubbard model, taken when the Fermi level is at the Van Hove singularity of the density of states. The model has well-defined scaling properties and the effective couplings display an unbounded flow in the infrared. We determine the leading instabilities by computing the different response functions up to $t' = 0.5 t$. The phase diagram shows a large boundary between superconducting and charge-density-wave phases, that merge in a triple point with a phase separation instability. The latter is re…
We propose a new parametrization of the four-point vertex function in the one-loop one-particle irreducible renormalization group (RG) scheme for fermions. It is based on a decomposition of the effective two-fermion interaction into fermion bilinears that interact via exchange bosons. The numerical computation of the RG flow of the boson propagators reproduces the leading weak coupling instabilities of the two-dimensional Hubbard model at Van Hove filling, as they were previously obtained by a temperature RG flow. Instead of regularizing with temperature, we here use a soft frequency $Ω$-regul…
We present a stability analysis of the two-dimensional t-t' Hubbard model for various values of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping t', and electron concentrations close to the Van Hove filling by means of the flow equation method. For t' > -t/3 a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave Pomeranchuk instability dominates (apart from antiferromagnetism at small t'). At t' < -t/3 the leading instabilities are a g-wave Pomeranchuk instability and p-wave particle-hole instability in the triplet channel at temperatures T < 0.15t, and an s^*-magnetic phase for T > 0.15t; upon increasing the electron concentration the triplet…
The unconventional temperature variation of the Knight shift (static spin susceptibility) that has been observed in Fe-based superconductors AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) is explained in terms of proximity to a van Hove singularity. Using the Hubbard model we show that when the Fermi energy is in the vicinity of a van Hove singularity, a downturn in spin susceptibility occurs as the temperature is lowered. This behavior is characterized by a temperature, $T^*$, which is determined by the difference in energy between the Fermi level and the van Hove singularity. When vertex corrections are take…
Using the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) we study the paramagnetic phase of the Hubbard model with the density of states (DOS) corresponding to the three-dimensional cubic lattice and the two-dimensional square lattice, as well as a DOS with inverse square root singularity. We show that the electron correlations rapidly smooth out the square-root van Hove singularities (kinks) in the spectral function for the 3D lattice and that the Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT) as well as the magnetic-field-induced MIT differ only little from the well-known results for the Bethe lattice. The conse…
We analyze effective d-wave interactions in the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model at weak coupling and small to moderate doping. The interactions are computed from a renormalization group flow. Attractive d-wave interactions are generated via antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the pairing and charge channels. Above Van Hove filling, the d-wave charge interaction is maximal at incommensurate diagonal wave vectors, corresponding to nematic fluctuations with a diagonal modulation. Below Van Hove filling a modulation along the crystal axes can be favored. The nematic fluctuations are enha…
The charge instabilities of electron systems in the square lattice are analyzed near the Van Hove singularity by means of a wilsonian renormalization group approach. We show that the method preserves the spin rotational invariance at all scales, allowing a rigorous determination of spin and charge instabilities of the $t-t'$ Hubbard model. For $t'$ above $\approx 0.276 t$, repulsive interactions fall into two different universality classes. One of them has nonsingular response functions in the charge sector, while the other is characterized by the splitting of the Van Hove singularity. At the …
Using large-scale dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the Lifshitz transition of the two dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping ($t'$), chemical potential and temperature as control parameters. At $t'\le0$, we identify a line of Lifshitz transition points associated with a change of the Fermi surface topology at zero temperature. In the overdoped region, the Fermi surface is complete and electron-like; across the Lifshitz transition, the Fermi surface becomes hole-like and develops a pseudogap. At (or very close to) the Lifshitz transition points, …
We investigate the competing Fermi surface instabilities in the Kagome tight-binding model. Specifically, we consider onsite and short-range Hubbard interactions in the vicinity of van Hove filling of the dispersive Kagome bands where the Fermiology promotes the joint effect of enlarged density of states and nesting. The sublattice interference mechanism [Kiesel and Thomale, Phys. Rev. B Rapid Comm., in press.] allows us to explain the intricate interplay between ferromagnetic fluctuations and other ordering tendencies. On the basis of functional renormalization group used to obtain an adequat…
We investigate magnetic and superconducting instabilities of the two-dimensional t-t' Hubbard model on a square lattice at Van Hove densities from weak to intermediate coupling by means of the two-particle self-consistent approach. We find that as the next-nearest-neighbor hopping |t'| increases from zero, the leading instability is towards an incommensurate spin-density wave whose wave vector moves slowly away from (pi, pi). For intermediate values of |t'|, the leading instability is towards d_{x2-y2}-wave superconductivity. For larger |t'|>0.33t, there are signs of a crossover to ferromagnet…
The phase diagram of the two-dimensional extended one-band U-V-J Hubbard model is considered within a mean-field approximation and two- and many-patch renormalization group (RG) approaches near the van Hove band fillings. At small t' and J>0 mean-field and many-patch RG approaches give similar results for the leading spin-density-wave (SDW) instability, while the two-patch RG approach, which predicts a wide region of charge-flux (CF) phase becomes unreliable due to nesting effect. At the same time, there is a complex competition between SDW, CF phases, and d-wave superconductivity in two- and …
A quantum critical point (QCP), separating the non-Fermi liquid region from the Fermi liquid, exists in the phase diagram of the 2D Hubbard model [Vidhyadhiraja et. al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 206407 (2009)]. Due to the vanishing of the critical temperature associated with a phase separation transition, the QCP is characterized by a vanishing quasiparticle weight. Near the QCP, the pairing is enhanced since the real part of the bare d-wave p-p susceptibility exhibits algebraic divergence with decreasing temperature, replacing the logarithmic divergence found in a Fermi liquid [Yang et. al, Phys.…
The Fermi surface of most hole-doped cuprates is close to a Van Hove singularity at the M point. A two-dimensional electronic system, whose Fermi surface is close to a Van Hove singularity shows a variety of weak coupling instabilities. It is a convenient model to study the interplay between antiferromagnetism and anisotropic superconductivity. The renormalization group approach is reviewed with emphasis on the underlying physical processes. General properties of the phase diagram and possible deformations of the Fermi surface due to the Van Hove proximity are described.
We study a ferromagnetic tendency in the two-dimensional Hubbard model near van Hove filling by using a functional renormalization-group method. We compute temperature dependences of magnetic susceptibilities including incommensurate magnetism. The ferromagnetic tendency is found to occur in a dome-shaped region around van Hove filling with an asymmetric property: incommensurate magnetism is favored near the edge of the dome above van Hove filling whereas a first-order-like transition to the ferromagnetic ground state is expected below van Hove filling. The dome-shaped phase diagram is well ca…
We study the occurrence and the origin of ferromagnetic fluctuations in the longitudinal spin susceptibility of the $t$-$t'$-Rashba-Hubbard model on the square lattice. The combined effect of the second-neighbor hopping $t'$ and the spin-orbit coupling leads to ferromagnetic fluctuations in a broad filling region. The spin-orbit coupling splits the energy bands, leading to two van Hove fillings, where the sheets of the Fermi surface change their topology. Between these two van Hove fillings the model shows ferromagnetic fluctuations. We find that these ferromagnetic fluctuations originate from…
We consider the application of the two-loop functional renormalization-group (fRG) approach to study the low-dimensional Hubbard model. This approach accounts for both, the universal and non-universal contributions to the RG flow. While the universal contributions were studied previously within the field-theoretical RG for the one-dimensional Hubbard model with linearized electronic dispersion and the two-dimensional Hubbard model with flat Fermi surface, the non-universal contributions appear to be important for the flow of the vertices and susceptibilities at large momenta scales. The two-lo…
The quasistatic approach is used to analyze the criterion of ferromagnetism for two-dimensional (2D) systems with the Fermi level near Van Hove (VH) singularities of the electron spectrum. It is shown that the spectrum of spin excitations (paramagnons) is positively defined when the interaction between electrons and paramagnons, determined by the Hubbard on-site repulsion U, is sufficiently large. Due to incommensurate spin fluctuations near the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition, the critical interaction Uc remains finite at VH filling and exceeds considerably its value obtained from the …
We consider the two-dimensional t-t' Hubbard model with the Fermi level being close to the van Hove singularities. The phase diagram of the model is discussed. In a broad energy region the self-energy at the singularity points has a nearly-linear energy dependence. The corresponding correction to the density of states is proportional to ln^3(e). Both real- and imaginary part of the self-energy increase near the quantum phase transition into magnetically ordered or superconducting phase which implies violation of the Fermi-liquid behavior. The application of the results to cuprates is discussed…
Sr$_2$MoO$_4$ is isostructural to the unconventional superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ but with two electrons instead of two holes in the Mo/Ru-t$_{2g}$ orbitals. Both materials are Hund's metals, but while Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has a van Hove singularity in close proximity to the Fermi surface, the van Hove singularity of Sr$_2$MoO$_4$ is far from the Fermi surface. By using density functional plus dynamical mean-field theory we determine the relative influence of van Hove and Hund's metal physics on the correlation properties. We show that theoretically predicted signatures of Hund's metal physics occur …
We use the quasistatic approach to analyze the criterion of ferromagnetism for two-dimensional (2D) systems with the Fermi level near Van Hove singularities (VHS) of the electronic spectrum. It is shown that the spectrum of spin excitations (paramagnons) is positively defined when the interaction I between electrons and paramagnons, which corresponds to the Hubbard on-site repulsion U, is sufficiently large. The critical interactions I_c and U_c remain finite at Van Hove filling and exceed considerably their values obtained from the Stoner criterion due to incommensurate spin fluctuations whic…
The first indication of a pseudogap in cuprates came from a sudden decrease of NMR Knight shift at a doping-dependent temperature $T^*(δ)$. Since then, experiments have found phase transitions at a lower $T^*_\text{phase}(δ)$. Using plaquette cellular dynamical mean-field for the square-lattice Hubbard model at high temperature, where the results are reliable, we show that $T^*(δ)$ shares many features of $T^*_\text{phase}(δ)$. The remarkable agreement with several experiments, including quantum critical behavior of the electronic specific heat, supports the view that the pseudogap is controll…
The ground state for the half-filled $t-t'$ Hubbard model is treated within the Hartree-Fock approximation and the slave boson approach including correlations. The criterium for the metal-insulator transition in the Slater scenario is formulated using an analytical free-energy expansion in the next-nearest-neighbor transfer integral $t'$ and in direct antiferromagnetic gap $Δ$. The correlation effects are generally demonstrated to favor the first-order transition. For a square lattice with a strong van Hove singularity, accidental close degeneracy of antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases i…
Recent Raman experiments [F. Venturini et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 89}, 107003-1,(2002)] done in $Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_4$ have found that antinodal quasiparticles become insulating when the doping is varied from overdoped to optimally doped while nodal quasiparticles remain metallic. We propose a simple explanation based on the incoherence of the spectral function in the antinodal direction due to the strong scattering suffered by the quasiparticles in the proximity of the Van Hove singularity.
Pseudogap, Fermi liquid, Van Hove singularity and maxima of the compressibility and of the Knight shift as a function of doping in the two-dimensional Hubbard model
We study the 2D Hubbard model using the Composite Operator Method within a novel three-pole approximation. Motivated by the long-standing experimental puzzle of the single-particle properties of the underdoped cuprates, we include in the operatorial basis, together with the usual Hubbard operators, a field describing the electronic transitions dressed by the nearest-neighbor spin fluctuations, which play a crucial role in the unconventional behavior of the Fermi surface and of the electronic dispersion. Then, we adopt this approximation to study the single-particle properties in the strong cou…
We use the dynamical cluster approximation to understand the proximity of the superconducting dome to the quantum critical point in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. In a BCS formalism, $T_c$ may be enhanced through an increase in the d-wave pairing interaction ($V_d$) or the bare pairing susceptibility ($χ_{0d}$). At optimal doping, where $V_d$ is revealed to be featureless, we find a power-law behavior of $χ_{0d}(ω=0)$, replacing the BCS log, and strongly enhanced $T_c$. We suggest experiments to verify our predictions.
Interplay of Pomeranchuk instability (spontaneous symmetry breaking of the Fermi surface) and d-wave superconductivity is studied for the repulsive Hubbard model on the square lattice with the dynamical mean field theory combined with the fluctuation exchange approximation (FLEX+DMFT). We show that the four-fold symmetric Fermi surface becomes unstable against a spontaneous distortion into two-fold near the van Hove filling, where the symmetry of superconductivity coexisting with the Pomeranchuk distorted Fermi surface is modified from the d-wave pairing to (d+s)-wave. By systematically shifti…
We investigate the possibility of ferromagnetic ordering in the non-degenerate Hubbard model on the face-centered cubic lattice within the functional renormalization group technique using temperature as a scale parameter. We assume the relations between nearest, next-nearest, and next-next-nearest hopping parameters providing higher order (giant) van Hove singularity of the density of states. The ferromagnetic instability formation with lowering temperature is described consistently in the one-loop approximation for a one-particle irreducible vertex of two-particle electron interaction. The ch…
Motivated by the recent resurgence of interest in topological superconductivity, we study in this paper superconducting pairing instabilities of the hole-doped Rashba-Hubbard model on the square lattice with first- and second-neighbor hopping. Within a weak-coupling approach based on the random phase approximation, we compute the spin-fluctuation mediated paring interactions as a function of spin-orbit coupling and hole doping. Rashba spin-orbit coupling splits the spin degeneracies of the bands, which leads to two van Hove singularities at two different fillings. We find that for a broad dopi…
Phase diagrams of the two-dimensional one-band t-t' Hubbard model are obtained within the two-patch and the temperature-cutoff many-patch renormalization group approach. At small t' and at van Hove band fillings antiferromagnetism dominates, while with increasing t' or changing filling antiferromagnetism is replaced by d-wave superconductivity. Near t'=t/2 and close to van Hove band fillings the system is unstable towards ferromagnetism. Away from van Hove band fillings this ferromagnetic instability is replaced by a region with dominating triplet p-wave superconducting correlations. The resul…
The deformation of the Fermi surface induced by Coulomb interactions is investigated in the t-t'-Hubbard model. The interplay of the local U and extended V interactions is analyzed. It is found that exchange interactions V enhance small anisotropies producing deformations of the Fermi surface which break the point group symmetry of the square lattice at the Van Hove filling. This Pomeranchuck instability competes with ferromagnetism and is suppressed at a critical value of U(V). The interaction V renormalizes the t' parameter to smaller values what favours nesting. It also induces changes on t…
Quantum Monte Carlo is used to calculate various pairing correlations of the 2D Hubbard model possessing band features experimentally observed in the cuprates. In the hole-doped case, where the Fermi level lies close to the van Hove singularities around $(0,π)$, the d$_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing correlation is selectively enhanced, while in the electron-doped case, where the singularities are far below the Fermi level and the Fermi surface runs through $(\pm π/2,\pm π/2)$, both d$_{x^2-y^2}$ and d$_{xy}$ correlations are enhanced with the latter having a $\sqrt{2}\times \sqrt{2}$ structure. The two pa…

Using the dynamical cluster approximation and quantum monte carlo we calculate the single-particle spectra of the Hubbard model with next-nearest neighbor hopping $t'$. In the underdoped region, we find that the pseudogap along the zone diagonal in the electron doped systems is due to long range antiferromagnetic correlations. The physics in the proximity of $(0,π)$ is dramatically influenced by $t'$ and determined by the short range correlations. The effect of $t'$ on the low energy ARPES spectra is weak except close to the zone edge. The short range correlations are sufficient to yield a pse…
In a half-filled Hubbard model on a square lattice, the next-nearest-neighbor hopping causes spin frustration, and the collinear antiferromagnetic (CAF) state appears as the ground state with suitable parameters. We find that there is a metal-insulator transition in the CAF state at a critical on-site repulsion. When the repulsion is small, the CAF state is metallic, and a van Hove singularity can be close to the Fermi surface, resulting in either a kink or a discontinuity in the magnetic moment. When the on-site repulsion is large, the CAF state is a Mott insulator. A first-order transition f…
The problem of weakly correlated electrons on a square lattice is studied theoretically. A simple renormalization group scheme for the angle-resolved weight Z of the quasiparticles at the Fermi surface is presented and applied to the Hubbard model. Upon reduction of the cutoff the Fermi surface is progressively destroyed from the van Hove points toward the zone diagonals. Due to the renormalized Z, divergences of both antiferromagnetic and superconducting correlation functions are suppressed at the critical scale, where the interactions diverge.
Using the strong coupling diagram technique for calculating the electron Green's function of the two-dimensional Hubbard model we have summed infinite sequences of ladder diagrams, which describe interactions of electrons with spin and charge fluctuations. For sufficiently low temperatures and doping a pronounced four-band structure is observed in spectral functions. Its appearance is related to the proximity of the transition to the long-range antiferromagnetic order.
Using the functional renormalization group, we investigate the electron instability in the single-sheet BC$_3$ when the electron filling is near a type-II van Hove singularity. For a finite Hubbard interaction, the ferromagnetic-like spin density wave order dominates in the immediate vicinity of the singularity. Elsewhere near the singularity the p-wave superconductivity prevails. We also find that a small nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion can enhance the superconductivity. Our results show that BC$_3$ would be a promising candidate to realize topological $p+ip'$ superconductivity, but the tr…
We study the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model by functional RG methods, using our recently proposed channel decomposition of the interaction vertex. The main technical advance of this work is that we calculate the full Matsubara frequency dependence of the self-energy and the interaction vertex in the whole frequency range without simplifying assumptions on its functional form, and that the effects of the self-energy are fully taken into account in the equations for the flow of the two-body vertex function. At Van Hove filling, we find that the Fermi surface deformations remain small at…
Twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides have emerged as important model systems for the investigation of correlated electron physics because their interaction strength, carrier concentration, band structure, and inversion symmetry breaking are controllable by device fabrication, twist angle, and most importantly, gate voltage, which can be varied in situ. The low energy physics of some of these materials has been shown to be described by a "moiré Hubbard model" generalized from the usual Hubbard model by the addition of strong, tunable spin orbit coupling and inversion symmetry breaki…
Bilayer Moiré structures are a highly tunable laboratory to investigate the physics of strongly correlated electron systems. Moiré transition metal dichalcogenides at low-energies, in particular, are believed to be described by a single narrow band Hubbard model on a triangular lattice with spin-orbit coupling. Motivated by recent experimental evidence for superconductivity in twisted bilayer materials, we investigate the possible superconducting pairings in a two-dimensional single band Rashba-Hubbard model. Using a random-phase approximation in the presence of nearest and next-nearest neighb…
