We propose a new lattice framework to extract the relevant gluonic energy scale of QCD phenomena which is based on a "cut" on link variables in momentum space. This framework is expected to be broadly applicable to all lattice QCD calculations. Using this framework, we quantitatively determine the relevant energy scale of color confinement, through the analyses of the quark-antiquark potential and meson masses. The relevant energy scale of color confinement is found to be below 1.5 GeV in the Landau gauge. In fact, the string tension is almost unchanged even after cutting off the high-momentum gluon component above 1.5 GeV. When the relevant low-energy region is cut, the quark-antiquark potential is approximately reduced to a Coulomb-like potential, and each meson becomes a quasi-free quark pair. As an analytical model calculation, we also investigate the dependence of the Richardson potential on the cut, and find the consistent behavior with the lattice result.
The existing evidence for dual superconductivity as mechanism of color confinement is reviewed. We also discuss what is known on the dual excitations, which produce confinement by condensation, and what are the open problems
An updated review is presented of our understanding of color confinement. Lattice results on condensation of magnetic charges are discussed. The role of vortices is analysed.
The colour confinement criterion proposed by Kugo and Ojima is tested in the lattice Landau gauge QCD simulation. The renormalization effects are studied by measuring the gluon propagator, ghost propagator, three gluon vertex and the ghost-antighost-gluon vertex.
The evidence for dual superconductivity as a mechanism for color confinement is reviewed. New developments are presented for full QCD, i.e. in the presence of dynamical quarks.
We report on evidence that confinement is related to dual superconductivity of the vacuum in full QCD, as in quenched QCD. The vacuum is a dual superconductor in the confining phase, whilst the U(1) magnetic symmetry is realized a la Wigner in the deconfined phase.
The order and the universality class of the deconfining phase transition can provide insight into the mechanism of color confinement, in particular for N_f=2. The mechanism of confinement by monopole condensation is reviewed.
Some basic features of confinement are reviewed, in particular the symmetry patterns of the dual dynamics. Open problems and possible directions of progress are discussed.
We report on evidence from lattice simulations that confinement is produced by dual superconductivity of the vacuum in full QCD as in quenched QCD. Preliminary information is obtained on the order of the deconfining phase transition.
This paper is part of a program of investigation of the chiral transition in Nf=2 QCD, started in Phys.Rev.D72:114510,2005. Progress is reported on the understanding of some possible systematic errors. A direct test of first order scaling is presented.
This comment-style letter represents a part of my talks on new developments in lattice QCD. While it does not contain any new results, it containes some theoretical ideas and comparisons which, I think, are not yet widely discussed in the lattice community. We point out that for $N_f\sim 10$ one can study a plasma phase which is much more "magnetic dominated" than for small $N_f$. We also suggest certain tests/measurements to check if "unusual confinement" phases are or are not realized in this region.
A natural explanation of confinement can be given in terms of symmetry. Since color symmetry is exact, the candidate symmetry is dual and related to homotopy,i.e., in (3+1)d, to magnetic charge conservation. A set of r abelian 'tHooft-like tensors (r = rank of the gauge group) can be defined and the dual charge is a violation of the corresponding Bianchi identities. It is shown that this is equivalently described by non-abelian Bianchi identities.
We study the QCD phase diagram, in particular we study the critical points of the two main QCD phase transitions, confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. Confinement drives chiral symmetry breaking, and, due to the finite quark mass, at small density both transitions are a crossover, while they are a first or second order phase transition in large density. We study the QCD phase diagram with a quark potential model including both confinement and chiral symmetry. We present the confinement of quark fields into a flux tube, obtained in SU(3) quenched lattice QCD, to illustrate the importance o…
Recent progress done in Pisa on the subject is presented. It is shown that dual superconductivity of the vacuum or absence of it is an intrinsic property of QCD vacuum, independent of the choice of the abelian projection. The order of the deconfining phase transition in $N_f=2$ QCD is studied as a key to understand the mechanism of confinement.
The confinement mechanism in the nonperturbative QCD is studied in terms of topological excitation as QCD-monopoles and instantons. In the 't Hooft abelian gauge, QCD is reduced into an abelian gauge theory with monopoles, and the QCD vacuum can be regarded as the dual superconductor with monopole condensation, which leads to the dual Higgs mechanism. The monopole-current theory extracted from QCD is found to have essential features of confinement. We find also close relation between monopoles and instantons using the lattice QCD. In this framework, the lowest $0^{++}$ glueball (1.5 $\sim$ 1.7…
The Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion is verified in the unquenched Landau gauge QCD simulation. The valence quark propagator of the Kogut-Susskind fermion with use of the fermion action including the Naik term and the staple contribution is calculated on MILC Asqtad unquenched gauge configurations, and it shows infrared suppression of the quark propagator.
It is demonstrated that monopole condensation in the confined phase of SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories is independent of the specific Abelian projection used to define the monopoles. Hence the dual excitations which condense in the vacuum to produce confinement must have magnetic U(1) charge in all the Abelian projections. Some physical implications of this result are discussed.
Color confinement can be understood by the dual Higgs theory, where monopole condensation leads to the exclusion of the electric flux from the QCD vacuum. We study the role of the monopole for color confinement by investigating the monopole current system. When the self-energy of the monopole current is small enough, long and complicated monopole world-lines appear, which is a signal of monopole condensation. In the dense monopole system, the Wilson loop obeys the area-law, and the string tension and the monopole density have similar behavior as the function of the self-energy, which seems tha…
We describe the current search for confinement mechanisms in lattice QCD. We report on a recent derivation of a lattice Ehrenfest-Maxwell relation for the Abelian projection of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. This gives a precise lattice definition of field strength and electric current due to static sources, charged dynamical fields, gauge fixing and ghosts. In the maximal Abelian gauge the electric charge is anti-screened analogously to the non-Abelian charge.
The first test of the Kugo-Ojima colour confinement criterion by the lattice Landau gauge QCD simulation is performed. The parameter u which is expected to be -1δ^a_b in the continuum theory was found to be -0.7δ^a_b in the strong coupling region. The data is analyzed in connection with the theory of Zwanziger. In the weak coupling region, the expectation value of the horizon function is negative or consistent to 0.
We study the role of the monopole for color confinement by using the monopole current system. For the self-energy of the monopole current less than ln$(2d-1)$, long and complicated monopole world-lines appear and the Wilson loop obeys the area law, and therefore the monopole current system almost reproduces essential features of confinement properties in the long-distance physics. In the short-distance physics, however, the monopole-current theory would become nonlocal due to the monopole size effect. This monopole size would provide a critical scale of QCD in terms of the dual Higgs mechanism…
This course consists of two lectures. In the first lecture I discuss why a non perturbative formulation of QCD is needed, and I show that lattice formulation copes with this need, even if it mainly produces numerical results. In the second lecture I discuss how lattice can help to understand the deconfinement transition.Such understanding is also important to predict parameters that can help in the interpretation of heavy ions high energy experiments.
New evidence is discussed of monopole condensation in the vacuum of SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories. Monopoles defined by different abelian projections do condense in the transition to the confined phase and show the same behavior. For SU(2) critical indices are determined by finite size scaling analysis and the results agree with the 3d Ising Model, as expected.
The problem of color confinement in lattice Landau gauge QCD is briefly reviewed in the light of Kugo-Ojima criterion and Gribov-Zwanziger theory. The infrared properties of the Landau gauge QCD is studied by the measurement of the gluon propagator, ghost propagator, Kugo-Ojima parameter and the running coupling via $β=6.4,32^4,48^4$ lattice simulation. The data are analyzed in the principle of minimum sensitivity(PMS) in the $\widetilde{MOM}$ scheme. We observe the running coupling $α_s(q)$ has a maximum about 1 and decreases near q=0. The Kugo-Ojima parameter, which is expected to be 1 was a…
We construct the creation operator of a vortex for SU(2) pure gauge theory using the methods developed for monopoles. We interpret its vacuum expectation value as a disorder parameter for the deconfinement phase transition and find that it behaves in the vacuum in a similar way to monopoles. Results are extrapolated to the thermodynamical limit using finite-size scaling.
In the lattice QCD formalism, we investigate the relation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. A gauge-invariant analytical relation connecting the Polyakov loop and the Dirac modes is derived on a temporally odd-number lattice, where the temporal lattice size is odd, with the normal (nontwisted) periodic boundary condition for link-variables. This analytical relation indicates that low-lying Dirac modes have little contribution to the Polyakov loop, and it is numerically confirmed at the quenched level in both confinement and deconfinement phases. This fact indicates no direct on…
The lattice gauge theory for curved spacetime is formulated. A discretized action is derived for both gluon and quark fields which reduces to the generally covariant form in the continuum limit. Using the Wilson action, it is shown analytically that for a general curved spacetime background, two propagating gluons are always color-confined. The fermion-doubling problem is discussed in the specific case of Friedman-Robertson-Walker metric. Lastly, we discussed possible future numerical implementation of lattice QCD in curved spacetime.
The property of color confinement ("C confinement"), meaning that all asymptotic particle states are color neutral, holds not only in QCD, but also in gauge-Higgs theories deep in the Higgs regime. In this talk we describe a new and stronger confinement criterion, separation-of-charge confinement or "S$_c$ confinement," which is an extension of the Wilson area-law criterion to gauge + matter theories. We will show that there is a transition between S$_c$ and C confinement in the phase plane of gauge-Higgs theories, and we will also explain what symmetry is actually broken in the Higgs phase of…
We use lattice QCD simulations to test some of the predictions of proposed AdS/QCD (holographic) duals for QCD. In particular, these duals predict that the scale of chiral symmetry breaking ($χ$SB) can be varied independently from that of confinement, with the proviso that the scale of $χ$SB cannot be longer than that of confinement. We simulate lattice QCD with 2 quarks in the fundamental representation of colour and with additional 4-fermion interactions (suggested by AdS/QCD), at finite temperatures. For sufficiently strong 4-fermion interactions, the deconfinement and $χ$SB transitions occ…
We give a new criterion of quark confinement/deconfinement by deriving a low-energy effective theory of QCD. The effective theory can explain Abelian dominance in low-energy physics of QCD, especially, quark confinement. Finally, we apply the above criterion to the large flavor QCD and discuss its phase structure. The result suggests the existence of conformal phase.
Monopole and photon contributions to Wilson loops are calculated using Monte-Carlo simulations of SU(2) QCD in the maximally abelian gauge. The string tensions of SU(2) QCD are well reproduced by extended monopole contributions alone.
Nonperturbative effects in the quark-gluon thermodynamics are studied in the framework of Vacuum Correlator Method. It is shown, that two correlators: colorelectric $D_1^E(x)$ and colormagnetic $D^H(x)$, provide the Polyakov line and the colormagnetic confinement in the spatial planes respectively. As a result both effects produce the realistic behavior of $P(T)$ and $s(T)$, being in good agreement with numerical lattice data.
An effective monopole action is derived from vacuum configurations after abelian projection in the maximally abelian gauge in $SU(2)$ QCD. Entropy dominance over energy of monopole loops is seen on the renormalized lattice with the spacing $b>b_c\simeq 5.2\times10^{-3} Λ_L^{-1}$ when the physical volume of the system is large enough. QCD confinement may be interpreted as the (dual) Meissner effect due to the monopole condensation.
I discuss recent results on the relation between the localisation of low-lying Dirac eigenmodes, the restoration of chiral symmetry, and deconfinement in QCD and QCD-like models, providing evidence of a close connection between the three phenomena.
A general discussion is presented of the possible symmetries responsible for confinement of color and of their evidence in lattice simulations. The consequences on the phase diagram of $QCD$ are also analyzed.
We give an outline of a recent proof that the low-energy effective gauge theory exhibiting quark confinement due to magnetic monopole condensation can be derived from QCD without any specific assumption. We emphasize that the low-energy effective abelian gauge theories obtained here give the dual description of the same physics in the low-energy region. They show that the QCD vacuum is nothing but the dual (type II) superconductor.
Momentum sum rule in QCD is widely used at high energy colliders. Although the exact form of the confinement potential energy is not known but the confinement potential energy at large distance $r$ can not rise slower than ${\rm ln}(r)$. In this paper we find that if the confinement potential energy at large distance $r$ rises linearly with $r$ (or faster) then the momentum sum rule in QCD is violated at the high energy colliders if we consider the hadron size as infinite. For finite size hadron we find that the momentum sum rule in QCD is violated at the high energy colliders for any form of …
We relate quark confinement, as measured by the Polyakov-loop order parameter, to color confinement, as described by the Kugo-Ojima/Gribov-Zwanziger scenario. We identify a simple criterion for quark confinement based on the IR behaviour of ghost and gluon propagators, and compute the order-parameter potential from the knowledge of Landau-gauge correlation functions with the aid of the functional RG. Our approach predicts the deconfinement transition in quenched QCD to be of first order for SU(3) and second order for SU(2) -- in agreement with general expectations. As an estimate for the criti…
The non-trivial ground-state vacuum fields of QCD form the foundation of matter. Using modern visualisation techniques, this presentation examines the microscopic structure of these fields. Of particular interest are the centre vortices identified within the ground-state fields of lattice QCD. Our current focus is on understanding the manner in which dynamical fermions in the QCD vacuum alter the centre-vortex structure. The impact of dynamical fermions is significant and provides new insights into the role of centre vortices in underpinning both confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry break…
We analytically study the relation between quark confinement and spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking in QCD. In terms of the Dirac eigenmodes, we derive some formulae for the Polyakov loop, its fluctuations, and the string tension from the Wilson loop. We also investigate the Polyakov loop in terms of the eigenmodes of the Wilson, the clover and the domain wall fermion kernels, respectively. For the confinement quantities, the low-lying Dirac/fermion eigenmodes are found to give negligible contribution, while they are essential for chiral symmetry breaking. These relations indicate no direct …
Suggested holographic duals of QCD, based on AdS/CFT duality, predict that one should be able to vary the scales of colour confinement and chiral-symmetry breaking independently. Furthermore they suggest that such independent variation of scales can be achieved by the inclusion of extra 4-fermion interactions in QCD. We simulate lattice QCD with such extra 4-fermion terms at finite temperatures and show that for strong enough 4-fermion couplings the deconfinement transition occurs at a lower temperature than the chiral-symmetry restoration transition. Moreover the separation of these transitio…
The complete knowledge of a theory is encoded in its correlation functions. Thus non-perturbative effects, like confinement in QCD, is necessarily contained in these correlation functions. As a consequence, a number of confinement scenarios make predictions for the behavior of these correlation functions. Non-perturbative methods, like lattice calculations, permit to calculate the correlation functions and test these predictions. To avoid the entanglement with chiral symmetry breaking and the costs of full fermion simulations, here scalar QCD will be used as a role model, as it is expected tha…
The proton spin crisis remains an unsolved problem in physics. In this paper we find that due to the confinement of partons inside the hadron the angular momentum sum rule in QCD is violated. Hence we find that the non-vanishing angular momentum flux contribution of the partons in QCD should be added to the spin and angular momentum of the partons to solve the proton spin crisis.
Using the eigen-mode of the QCD Dirac operator $\Slash D=γ^μD^μ$, we develop a manifestly gauge-covariant expansion and projection of the QCD operators such as the Wilson loop and the Polyakov loop. With this method, we perform a direct analysis of the correlation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in lattice QCD Monte Carlo calculations. Even after removing the low-lying Dirac modes, which are responsible to chiral symmetry breaking, we find that the Wilson loop obeys the area law, and the string tension or the confinement force is almost unchanged. We find also that the Polyako…
I will review essential features of the Hamiltonian approach to QCD in Coulomb gauge showing that Gribov's confinement scenario is realized in this gauge. For this purpose I will discuss in detail the emergence of the horizon condition and the Coulomb string tension. I will show that both are induced by center vortex gauge field configurations, which establish the connection between Gribov's confinement scenario and the center vortex picture of confinement. I will then extend the Hamiltonian approach to QCD in Coulomb gauge to finite temperatures, first by the usual grand canonical ensemble an…
Confinement is explained via field correlators, and the latter are calculated via gluelumps. Behavior of gluelump Green's function at small and large distances yields gluonic condensate and vacuum correlation length respectively and allows to check the consistency of the whole picture.
I analyze the IR fixed point structure of Landau gauge QCD. Precisely the fixed point with a strong kinematic singularity of the quark-gluon vertex that proved crucial for the recently proposed confinement mechanism in the quenched approximation is absent in dynamical QCD. Therefore, the IR singularities do not induce asymptotic quark confinement but the long-range interaction is screened by unquenching loops at scales of the order of the quark mass. This provides the prerequisite for a microscopic description of deconfinement and string breaking. The fixed points determine the qualitative for…
We argue that lattice calculations of the $η'$ mass in QCD with $N_c=2$ colors performed at non-zero baryon chemical potential can be used to study the mechanism responsible for the mass of the $η'$. QCD with two colors is an ideal laboratory because it exhibits confinement, chiral symmetry breaking and a would-be $U(1)_A$ Goldstone boson at all densities. Since the instanton density and the confinement scale vary with density in a very different way, instantons are clearly distinguishable from other possible mechanisms. There is an instanton prediction for the $η'$ mass at large density that …
The mechanism of non-Abelian color confinement is studied in SU(2) lattice gauge theory in terms of the Abelian fields and monopoles extracted from non-Abelian link variables without adopting gauge fixing. Firstly, the static quark-antiquark potential and force are computed with the Abelian and monopole Polyakov loop correlators, and the resulting string tensions are found to be identical to the non-Abelian string tension. These potentials also show the scaling behavior with respect to the change of lattice spacing. Secondly, the profile of the color-electric field between a quark and an antiq…
All colored particles including dynamical quarks and gluons are confined if the color confinement criterion proposed by Kugo and Ojima is satisfied. The criterion was obtained under the gauge fixing of the Lorenz type. However, it was pointed out that the Kugo-Ojima criterion breaks down for the Maximal Abelian gauge, which is quite strange in view of the fact that quark confinement has been verified according to the dual superconductivity caused by magnetic monopole condensations. In order to make a bridge between color confinement due to Kugo and Ojima and the dual superconductor picture for…
The proton spin crisis still remains an unsolved problem in particle physics. It is suggested in the literature that the gauge invariant spin and orbital angular momentum of the quark and the gauge invariant total angular momentum of the gluon contribute to the proton spin. However, in this paper we find a new contribution to the proton spin. This new contribution is due to the boundary surface term in the total angular momentum conservation equation in QCD which is non-zero due to the confinement of the quarks and gluons inside the finite size proton. We derive the non-perturbative formula of…
I start by giving a brief overview over new developments in the area of confinement and topology. As an example for the interrelations between topological objects, instantons at finite temperature are discussed. Then I focus on new insights into the structure of the QCD vacuum obtained through filtering methods, in particular those based on decompositions w.r.t. fermionic eigenmodes.
We present a strong evidence for the magnetic confinement in QCD by demonstrating that the one loop effective action of SU(2) QCD induces a dynamical symmetry breaking thorugh the monopole condensation, which could induce the dual Meissner effect and guarantee the confinement of color in the non-Abelian gauge theory. The result is obtained by separating the topological degrees which describes the non-Abelian monopoles from the dynamical degrees of the potential, and integrating out all the dynamical degrees of QCD.
High density YM-theory is addressed by means of an effective theory where a Higgs type field corresponds to the diquark order parameter. The effective Higgs theory mimics the Cooper instability at the Fermi surface. After Landau gauge fixing, the theory possesses a global color degree of freedom. Color superconductivity corresponds to a spontaneous breakdown of the residual global color symmetry. Numerical simulations illustrate this mechanism of spontaneously broken global color for the case of the standard electro-weak phase transition and for the case of the transition between the confineme…
