In the DGP model, the ``self-accelerating'' solution is plagued by a ghost instability, which makes the solution untenable. This fact as well as all interesting departures from GR are fully captured by a four-dimensional effective Lagrangian, valid at distances smaller than the present Hubble scale. The 4D effective theory involves a relativistic scalar π, universally coupled to matter and with peculiar derivative self-interactions. In this paper, we study the connection between self-acceleration and the presence of ghosts for a quite generic class of theories that modify gravity in the infrared. These theories are defined as those that at distances shorter than cosmological, reduce to a certain generalization of the DGP 4D effective theory. We argue that for infrared modifications of GR locally due to a universally coupled scalar, our generalization is the only one that allows for a robust implementation of the Vainshtein effect--the decoupling of the scalar from matter in gravitationally bound systems--necessary to recover agreement with solar system tests. Our generalization involves an internal ``galilean'' invariance, under which π's gradient shifts by a constant. This symmetry constrains the structure of the πLagrangian so much so that in 4D there exist only five terms that can yield sizable non-linearities without introducing ghosts. We show that for such theories in fact there are ``self-accelerating'' deSitter solutions with no ghost-like instabilities. In the presence of compact sources, these solutions can support spherically symmetric, Vainshtein-like non-linear perturbations that are also stable against small fluctuations. Cubic Galileon massive gravity is a development of de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolly (dRGT) massive gravity theory is which the space of the Stueckelberg field is broken. We consider the cubic Galileon term as a scalar field coupled to the graviton filed. We present a detailed study of the cosmological aspects of this theory of gravity. We analyze self-accelerating solutions of the background equations of motion to explain the accelerated expansion of the Universe. Exploiting the latest Union2 Type Ia Supernovea (SNIa) dataset, which consists of 557 SNIa, we show that cubic Galileon massive gravity theo…
It is possible to couple Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalars possessing generalized Galilean internal shift symmetries (Galileons) to nonlinear massive gravity in four dimensions, in such a manner that the interactions maintain the Galilean symmetry. Such a construction is of interest because it is not possible to couple such fields to massless General Relativity in the same way. We show that this theory has the primary constraint necessary to eliminate the Boulware-Deser ghost, thus preserving the attractive properties of both the Galileons and ghost-free massive gravity.
We investigate the coupling between a Galileon scalar field and massive gravity through composite metrics. We derive the full set of equations of motion for a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background, and study linear perturbations around it. Generally, the nonminimal coupling with the composite metric will excite all 6 degrees of freedom of the spatial metric perturbations, one of which may correspond to the Boulware-Deser ghost.
The galileon model was recently proposed to locally describe a class of modified gravity theories, including the braneworld DGP model. We discuss spontaneous symmetry breaking of the self-accelerating branch in a multi-galileon theory with internal global symmetries. We show a modified version of Goldstone's theorem is applicable to the symmetry breaking pattern and discuss its implications. We also derive the Hamiltonian of a general multi-galileon theory and discuss its implications.
In this paper we investigate the decoupling limit of a particular class of multi-gravity theories, i.e. of theories of interacting spin-2 fields. We explicitly compute the interactions of helicity-0 modes in this limit, showing that they take on the form of multi-Galileons and dual forms. In the process we extend the recently discovered Galileon dualities, deriving a set of new multi-Galileon dualities. These are also intrinsically connected to healthy, but higher-derivative, multi-scalar field theories akin to `beyond Horndeski' models.
We investigate cosmological dynamics and screening mechanism of the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) Galileon model. The model has been divided into two regimes, one has positive signs in front of scalar field kinetic terms so-called the DBI galileon, another one has negative signs and it is dubbed as the DBIonic galileon. We find de Sitter solution and evolution of the Universe starting from radiation dominated era to late-time accelerated expansion in the DBI galileon model without the presence of potential term. In one of the attractors, the ghost and Laplacian instabilities vanishes for the whole e…
We consider a galileon field coupled to gravity. The standard no-hair theorems do not apply, because of the galileon's peculiar derivative interactions. We prove that, nonetheless, static spherically symmetric black holes cannot sustain non-trivial galileon profiles. Our theorem holds regardless of whether there are non-minimal couplings between the galileon and gravity of the covariant galileon type.
We perform the Hamiltonian analysis of minimal massive gravity coupled to the Galileon tadpole term. We determine all constraints and we argue that the physical degrees of freedom correspond to ten modes of the massive gravity together with 2(D-3) Galileons so that given model is ghost free.
Galileons are stable null energy condition (NEC) violating perturbations. If these NEC violating modes are coupled to Einstein gravity, they can cause violation of the second law of black hole thermodynamics. We demonstrate that galileons can only be coupled to quadratic gravity since they are generated by consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of the Einstein-Hilbert-Gauss-Bonnet action from 10-dimensions to 4-dimensions. As a result, the NEC violation of galileons can no longer be the source of the violation of the second law of black hole thermodynamics.
We review the different frameworks in which Galileon scalar fields have been seen to emerge such an in DGP, New Massive Gravity and Ghost-free massive Gravity and emphasize their relation with the Lovelock invariant in braneworld models. The existence of a non-renormalization theorem for Galileon scalar fields makes them especially attractive candidates for inflation as well as for late-time acceleration. In particular we review the self-accelerating and degravitating branches of solutions present in Galileon models when arising from Massive Gravity and discuss their phenomenology.
We derive analyticity constraints on a nonlinear ghost-free effective theory of a massive spin-2 particle known as pseudo-linear massive gravity, and on a generalized theory of a massive spin-1 particle, both of which provide simple IR completions of Galileon theories. For pseudo-linear massive gravity we find that, unlike dRGT massive gravity, there is no window of parameter space which satisfies the analyticity constraints. For massive vectors which reduce to Galileons in the decoupling limit, we find that no two-derivative actions are compatible with positivity, but that higher derivative a…
The particular structure of Galileon interactions allows for higher-derivative terms while retaining second order field equations for scalar fields and Abelian $p$-forms. In this work we introduce an index-free formulation of these interactions in terms of two sets of Grassmannian variables. We employ this to construct Galileon interactions for mixed-symmetry tensor fields and coupled systems thereof. We argue that these tensors are the natural generalization of scalars with Galileon symmetry, similar to $p$-forms and scalars with a shift-symmetry. The simplest case corresponds to linearised g…
We introduce bi-galileon theory, the generalisation of the single galileon model introduced by Nicolis et al. The theory contains two coupled scalar fields and is described by a Lagrangian that is invariant under Galilean shifts in those fields. This paper is the first of two, and focuses on the motivation and formulation of the theory. We show that the boundary effective theory of the cascading cosmology model corresponds to a bi-galileon theory in the decoupling limit, and argue that this is to be expected for co-dimension 2 braneworld models exhibiting infra-red modification of gravity. We …
We show generalized Galileons -- a particular subclass of Horndeski gravity -- arise from a consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of the low-energy effective action of heterotic string theory to first order in $α'$. This suggests Horndeski theories of gravity have a string-theoretic origin. The form of the Galileonic terms is precisely fixed by parameters of the embedding spacetime, so that only a specific subset of Horndeski theories is permitted by string theory. A novel limit of the model is considered by performing a dimensionful rescaling of $α'$.
We compare observational data of growth rate with the prediction by Galileon theory. For the same value of the energy density parameter $Ω_{m,0}$, the growth rate in Galileon models is enhanced compared with the $Λ$CDM case, due to the enhancement of Newton's constant. The smaller $Ω_{m,0}$ is, the more suppressed growth rate is. Hence the best fit value of $Ω_{m,0}$ in the Galileon model is 0.16 from only the growth rate data, which is considerably smaller than such value obtained from observations of supernovae Ia, the cosmic microwave background and baryon acoustic oscillations. This result…
Coupling the galileons to a curved background has been a tradeoff between maintaining second order equations of motion, maintaining the galilean shift symmetries, and allowing the background metric to be dynamical. We propose a construction which can achieve all three for a novel class of galilean invariant models, by coupling a scalar with the galilean symmetry to a massive graviton. This generalizes the brane construction for galileons, by adding to the brane a dynamical metric, (non-universally) interacting with the galileon field. Alternatively, it can be thought of as an extension of the …
Could a conformal Galileon be describing a gauge mode of a broader diffeomorphism invariant theory? We answer this question affirmatively in 3D by using a coset construction for a nonlinearly realized conformal symmetry. In particular, we show that the conformal Galileon emerges as a Stückelberg field of a local Weyl symmetry. The coset construction gives us a diffeomorphism and Weyl invariant 3D theory containing first, second, and third powers of the curvatures, their couplings to certain tensors made of the Galileon and its derivatives, and the conformal Galileon terms. In a theory with a b…
We studied the cosmological constraints on the Galileon gravity obtained from observational data of the growth rate of matter density perturbations, the supernovae Ia (SN Ia), the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). For the same value of the energy density parameter of matter $Ω_{m,0}$, the growth rate $f$ in Galileon models is enhanced, relative to the $Λ$CDM case, because of an increase in Newton's constant. The smaller $Ω_{m,0}$ is, the more growth rate is suppressed. Therefore, the best fit value of $Ω_{m,0}$ in the Galileon model, based only the grow…
Galileon models are a class of effective field theories that have recently received much attention. They arise in the decoupling limit of theories of massive gravity, and in some cases they have been treated in their own right as scalar field theories with a specific nonlinearly realized global symmetry (Galilean transformation). It is well known that in the presence of a source, these Galileon theories admit superluminal propagating solutions, implying that as quantum field theories they must admit a different notion of causality than standard local Lorentz invariant theories. We show that in…
A certain class of nonlocal theories eliminates an arbitrary cosmological constant (CC) from a universe that can be perceived as our world. Dark energy then cannot be explained by a CC; it could however be due to massive gravity. We calculate the new corrections, which originate from the nonlocal terms that eliminate the CC, to the decoupling limit Lagrangian of massive gravity. The new nonlocal terms also have internal field space Galilean symmetry and are referred here as "nonlocal Galileons." We then study a self-accelerated solution and show that the new nonlocal terms change the perturbat…
In the context of a cubic Galileon model in which the Vainshtein mechanism suppresses the scalar field interactions with matter, we study low-density stars with slow rotation and static relativistic stars. We develop an expansion scheme to find approximated solutions inside the Vainshtein radius, and show that deviations from General Relativity (GR), while considering rotation, are also suppressed by the Vainshtein mechanism. In a quadratic coupling model, in which the scalarisation effect can significantly enhance deviations from GR in normal scalar tensor gravity, the Galileon term successfu…
Cosmological models with Galileon gravity are an alternative to the standard $Λ{\rm CDM}$ paradigm with testable predictions at the level of its self-accelerating solutions for the expansion history, as well as large-scale structure formation. Here, we place constraints on the full parameter space of these models using data from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) (including lensing), baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) and the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect. We pay special attention to the ISW effect for which we use the cross-spectra, $C_\ell^{\rm T g}$, of CMB temperature maps and f…
We further develop the framework for coupling galileons and Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalar fields to a massive graviton while retaining both the non-linear symmetries of the scalars and ghost-freedom of the theory. The general construction is recast in terms of vielbeins which simplifies calculations and allows for compact expressions. Expressions for the general form of the action are derived, with special emphasis on those models which descend from maximally symmetric spaces. We demonstrate the existence of maximally symmetric solutions to the fully non-linear theory and analyze their spectr…
Certain scalar fields with higher derivative interactions and novel classical and quantum mechanical properties - the Galileons - can be naturally covariantized by coupling to nonlinear massive gravity in such a way that their symmetries and number of degrees of freedom are unchanged. We study the propagating degrees of freedom in these models around cosmologically interesting backgrounds. We identify the conditions necessary for such a theory to remain ghost free, and consider when tachyonic instabilities can be avoided. We show that on the self-accelerating branch of solutions, the kinetic t…
We study the cosmology of the multifield relativistic Galileon model in which an induced gravity term is added to the Dirac-Born-Infeld action. We highlight the physical insight that is gained by employing a bimetric perspective in which the induced gravity and Einstein-Hilbert action are treated on equal footing. We derive the conditions under which a phase of quasi exponential inflation can be sustained and demonstrate the existence of a critical background energy density above which cosmological fluctuations become ghosts. At the non-linear level, this scenario provides the first concrete e…
The DBI galileons are a generalization of the galileon terms, which extend the internal galilean symmetry to an internal relativistic symmetry, and can also be thought of as generalizations of DBI which yield second order field equations. We show that, when considered as local modifications to gravity, such as in the Solar system, there exists a region of parameter space in which spherically symmetric static solutions exist and are stable. However, these solutions always exhibit superluminality, casting doubt on the existence of a standard Lorentz invariant UV completion.
We covariantize the decoupling limit of massive gravity proposed in arXiv:1011.1232 and study the cosmology of this theory as a proxy, which embodies key features of the fully non-linear covariant theory. We first confirm that it exhibits a self-accelerating solution, similar to what has been found in arXiv:1010.1780, where the Hubble parameter corresponds to the graviton mass. For a certain range of parameters fluctuations relative to the self-accelerating background are stable and form an attractor solution. We also show that a degravitating solution can not be constructed in this covarianti…
Galileon models arise in certain braneworld scenarios as modifications to General Relativity, and are also interesting as field theories in their own right. We show how the galileon model can be naturally generalized to include local gauge symmetries, by allowing for couplings to Yang-Mills fields. The resulting theories have at most second order spacetime derivatives in any representation of the gauge group, thereby avoiding Ostrogradski ghosts. We also extend the models to include curved space, and show how in that case we need to include non-minimal couplings between the galileons and the c…
In this paper we show that the flat space Galilean theories with up to three scalars in the equation of motion (the quartic Galileons) are recovered in the decoupling limit of certain scalar theories non-minimally coupled to gravity, the so-called "Slotheonic" theories. These theories are also invariant under the generalized Galilean shifts in curved spacetime. While Galilean self-(derivative)couplings are not explicit in the action, they appear after integrating out gravity. We then argue that Galilean supersymmetric theories may only be found in the context of supergravity. Finally, we discu…
We derive field equations of Gauss-Bonnet gravity in 4 dimensions after dimensional reduction of the action and demonstrate that in this scenario Vainshtein mechanism operates in the flat spherically symmetric background. We show that inside this Vainshtein sphere the fifth force is negligibly small compared to the gravitational force. We also investigate stability of the spherically symmetric solution, clarify the vocabulary used in the literature about the hyperbolicity of the equation and the ghost-Laplacian stability conditions. We find superluminal behavior of the perturbation of the fiel…
We derive the relativistic generalization of the Galileon, by studying the brane position modulus of a relativistic probe brane embedded in a five- dimensional bulk. In the appropriate Galilean contraction limit, we recover the complete Galileon generalization of the DGP decoupling theory and its conformal extension. All higher order interactions for the Galileon and its relativistic generalization naturally follow from the brane tension, induced curvature, and the Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary terms associated with all bulk Lovelock invariants. Our approach makes the coupling to gravity strai…
We review the construction of Galileon interactions involving a single two-column mixed-symmetry tensor of arbitrary degree in flat spacetime of arbitrary dimensions, in a reverse engineering spirit. By defining an appropriate Riemann-like tensor for each of these tensor gauge fields, we show that the theories constructed in the spirit of Lovelock's theory of Gravity correspond to the well-known Galileon theories from the literature.
We construct simple Lagrangians of vector fields which involve second derivatives, but nevertheless lead to second order field equations. These vector fields are, therefore, analogs of generalized Galileons. Our construction is given first in Minkowski space, and then generalizied to include dynamical gravity. We present examples of backgrounds that are stable and ghost-free despite the absence of gauge invariance. Some of these backgrounds violate the Null Energy Condition.
We investigate the structure of halos in the sDGP (self-accelerating branch of the Dvali-Gavadadze-Porrati braneworld gravity) model and the galileon modified gravity model on the basis of the static and spherically symmetric solutions of the collisionless Boltzmann equation, which reduce to the singular isothermal sphere model and the King model in the limit of Newtonian gravity. The common feature of these halos is that the density of a halo in the outer region is larger (smaller) in the sDGP (galileon) model, respectively, in comparison with Newtonian gravity. This comes from the suppressio…
We study a cosmological scenario in which the DBI action governing the motion of a D3-brane in a higher-dimensional spacetime is supplemented with an induced gravity term. The latter reduces to the quartic Galileon Lagrangian when the motion of the brane is non-relativistic and we show that it tends to violate the null energy condition and to render cosmological fluctuations ghosts. There nonetheless exists an interesting parameter space in which a stable phase of quasi-exponential expansion can be achieved while the induced gravity leaves non trivial imprints. We derive the exact second-order…
We present consistent supersymmetric theories invariant under the generalization of the Galilean shift symmetry to ${\cal{N}}=1$ superspace. These theories are constructed via the decoupling limit of certain non-minimally derivative coupled supergravities, thus they correspond to the supersymmetrization of the so-called covariant Galileon. Specifically, these theories are constructed in the linearized ${\cal{N}}=1$ new-minimal supergravity set-up where the chiral supermultiplet is minimally coupled to gravity via the standard R-current contact term, and, at the same time, non-minimally derivat…
Galileon interactions represent a class of effective field theories that have received much attention since their inception. They can be treated in their own right as scalar field theories with a specific global shift and Galilean symmetry or as a descendant of a more fundamental theory like massive gravity. It is well known that the Galileon theories are stable under quantum corrections thanks to the non-renormalization theorem which is not due to the symmetry. We consider different covariant couplings of this Galileon scalar field with the matter field: the conformal coupling, the disformal …
We establish a correspondence between general relativity with diffeomorphism invariance and scalar field theories with Galilean invariance: notions such as the Levi-Civita connection and the Riemann tensor have a Galilean counterpart. This suggests Galilean theories as the unique nontrivial alternative to gauge theories (including general relativity). Moreover, it is shown that the requirement of first-order Palatini formalism uniquely determines the Galileon models with second-order field equations, similar to the Lovelock gravity theories. Possible extensions are discussed.
It is shown that a disformally coupled theory in which the gravitational sector has the Einstein-Hilbert form is equivalent to a quartic DBI Galileon Lagrangian, possessing non-linear higher derivative interactions, and hence allowing for the Vainshtein effect. This Einstein Frame description considerably simplifies the dynamical equations and highlights the role of the different terms. The study of highly dense, non-relativistic environments within this description unravels the existence of a disformal screening mechanism, while the study of static vacuum configurations reveals the existence …
Vector Galileons are ghost-free systems containing higher derivative interactions of vector fields. They break the vector gauge symmetry, and the dynamics of the longitudinal vector polarizations acquire a Galileon symmetry in an appropriate decoupling limit in Minkowski space. Using an ADM approach, we carefully reconsider the coupling with gravity of vector Galileons, with the aim of studying the necessary conditions to avoid the propagation of ghosts. We develop arguments that put on a more solid footing the results previously obtained in the literature. Moreover, working in analogy with th…
We explore the nonlinear classical dynamics of the three-dimensional theory of "New Massive Gravity" proposed by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend. We find that the theory passes remarkably highly nontrivial consistency checks at the nonlinear level. In particular, we show that: (1) In the decoupling limit of the theory, the interactions of the helicity-0 mode are described by a single cubic term -- the so-called cubic Galileon -- previously found in the context of the DGP model and in certain 4D massive gravities. (2) The conformal mode of the metric coincides with the helicity-0 mode in the deco…
We present for the first time an explicit exposition of quantum corrections within the cubic Galileon theory including the effect of quantum gravity, in a background- and gauge-invariant manner, employing the field-reparametrisation approach of the covariant effective action at 1-loop. We show that the consideration of gravitational effects in combination with the non-linear derivative structure of the theory reveals new interactions at the perturbative level, which manifest themselves as higher-operators in the associated effective action, which' relevance is controlled by appropriate ratios …
The Galileon model is a ghost free scalar effective field theory containing higher derivative terms that are protected by the Galileon symmetry. The presence of a Vainshtein screening mechanism allows the scalar field to couple to matter without mediating unacceptably large fifth forces in the solar system. We describe how laboratory measurements of the Casimir effect and possible deviations from Newtonian gravity can be used to search for Galileon scalar fields. Current experimental measurements are used to bound a previously unconstrained combination of Galileon parameters.
We have been studied the model of light Galileon with translational shift symmetry $ϕ\to ϕ+c$. The matter Lagrangian is presented in the form $\mathcal{L}_ϕ= -η(\partial ϕ)^2+βG^{μν}\partial_μϕ\partial_νϕ$. We have been addressed two issues: the first is that, we have been proven that, this type of Galileons belong to the modified matter-curvature models of gravity in type of $f(R,R^{μν}T_{μν}^m)$. Secondly, we have been investigated exact solution for spherically symmetric geometries in this model. We have been found an exact solution with singularity at $r=0$ in null coordinates. We have bee…
We study the cosmology of a covariant scalar field respecting a Galilean symmetry in flat space-time. We show the existence of a tracker solution that finally approaches a de Sitter fixed point responsible for cosmic acceleration today. The viable region of model parameters is clarified by deriving conditions under which ghosts and Laplacian instabilities of scalar and tensor perturbations are absent. The field equation of state exhibits a peculiar phantom-like behavior along the tracker, which allows a possibility to observationally distinguish the Galileon gravity from the Lambda-CDM model.
In the present thesis, using an effective field theory point of view, we explore theories of single-field inflation where higher derivative operators become relevant, affecting in a novel way the dynamics and therefore the observations. For instance, concerning the scalar spectrum, they allow for measurable equilateral non-Gaussianity, whose amplitude can differ significantly from the predictions of other existing models. Moreover, we show that the stability and the consistency of such theories are ensured by an approximate Galileon symmetry. Indeed, being generically possible to build an inva…
The Galileon scalar field theory is a prototypical example of an effective field theory that exhibits the Vainshtein screening mechanism, which is incorporated into many extensions to Einstein gravity. The Galileon describes the helicity zero mode of gravitational radiation, the presence of which has significant implications for predictions of gravitational waves from orbiting objects, and for tests of gravity sensitive to additional polarizations. Because of the derivative nature of their interactions, Galileons are superficially not well-posed as effective field theories. Although this prope…
We study Galileon theories that emerge in ghost-free massive gravity. In particular, we focus on a sub-class of these theories where the Galileons can be completely decoupled from the tensor Lagrangian. These Galileons differ from generic ones -- they have interrelated coefficients of the cubic and quartic terms, and most importantly, a non-standard coupling to external stress-tensors, governed by the same coefficient. We show that this theory has no static stable spherically symmetric solutions that would interpolate from the Vainshtein region to flat space; these two regions cannot be smooth…
Effective theories of a scalar $ϕ$ invariant under the internal \textit{galileon symmetry} $ϕ\toϕ+b_μx^μ$ have been extensively studied due to their special theoretical and phenomenological properties. In this paper, we introduce the notion of \textit{weakly broken galileon invariance}, which characterizes the unique class of couplings of such theories to gravity that maximally retain their defining symmetry. The curved-space remnant of the galileon's quantum properties allows to construct (quasi) de Sitter backgrounds largely insensitive to loop corrections. We exploit this fact to build nove…
Theories such as massive Galileons and massive gravity can satisfy the presently known improved positivity bounds provided they are weakly coupled. We discuss the form of the EFT Lagrangian for a weakly coupled UV completion of massive gravity which closely parallels the massive Galileon, and perform the power counting of corrections to the scattering amplitude and the positivity bounds. The Vainshtein mechanism which is central to the phenomenological viability of massive gravity is entirely consistent with weak coupling since it is classical in nature. We highlight that the only implication …
We generalize the Galileon duality to any single scalar field Lagrangian coupled locally to any matter field. Under the duality, a generalized Galileon maps into another generalized Galileon via a one parameter group of transformations, with only a simple modification of the Lagrangian functions. We find a special class of generalized Galileons for which the duality is a symmetry of the action. We further extend the duality to the case of vector fields and give the dual formulations of the Maxwell and Proca theories. We include arbitrary local couplings to matter fields and show that the duali…
Discrepant measurements of the Universe's expansion rate ($H_0$) may signal physics beyond the standard cosmological model. Here I describe two early modified gravity mechanisms that reconcile the value of $H_0$ by increasing the expansion rate in the era of matter-radiation equality. These mechanisms, based on viable Horndeski theories, require significantly less fine-tuned initial conditions than early dark energy with oscillating scalar fields. In Imperfect Dark Energy at Equality (IDEE), the initial energy density dilutes slower than radiation but faster than matter, naturally peaking arou…
We set up cosmological perturbation theory and study the cosmological implications of the so-called ``generalized Galileon'' developed in \cite{Deffayet:2011gz,horndeski}. This is the most general scalar field theory whose Lagrangian contains derivatives up to second order while keeping second order equations of motion, and contains as sub-cases $k$-inflation, $G$-inflation and many other models. We calculate the power spectrum of the primordial curvature perturbation, finding a modification of the usual consistency relation of the tensor-to-scalar ratio in $k$-inflation or perfect fluid model…
We study the cosmology of a galileon scalar-tensor theory, obtained by covariantizing the decoupling lagrangian of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Poratti (DGP) model. Despite being local in 3+1 dimensions, the resulting cosmological evolution is remarkably similar to that of the full 4+1-dimensional DGP framework, both for the expansion history and the evolution of density perturbations. As in the DGP model, the covariant galileon theory yields two branches of solutions, depending on the sign of the galileon velocity. Perturbations are stable on one branch and ghost-like on the other. An interesting effe…
We consider a general Kaluza-Klein reduction of a truncated Lovelock theory. We find necessary geometric conditions for the reduction to be consistent. The resulting lower-dimensional theory is a higher derivative scalar-tensor theory, depends on a single real parameter and yields second-order field equations. Due to the presence of higher-derivative terms, the theory has multiple applications in modifications of Einstein gravity (Galileon/Horndesky theory) and holography (Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theories). We find and analyze charged black hole solutions with planar or curved horizons, both …
The Galileon model is a tensor-scalar theory of gravity which explains the late acceleration of the Universe expansion with no instabilities and recovers General Relativity in the strong field limit. Most constraints obtained so far on Galileon model parameters from cosmological data were derived for the limited subset of tracker solutions and reported tensions between the model and data. This paper presents the first exploration of the general solution of the Galileon model, which is confronted against recent cosmological data for both background observables and linear perturbations, using Mo…
We consider the double copy of massive Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions, whose decoupling limit is a nonlinear sigma model. The latter may be regarded as the leading terms in the low energy effective theory of a heavy Higgs model, in which the Higgs has been integrated out. The obtained double copy effective field theory contains a massive spin-2, massive spin-1 and a massive spin-0 field, and we construct explicitly its interacting Lagrangian up to fourth order in fields. We find that up to this order, the spin-2 self interactions match those of the dRGT massive gravity theory, and that a…
In this paper we define covariant Galilean transformations in curved spacetime and find all scalar field theories invariant under this symmetry. The Slotheon is a Galilean invariant scalar field with a modified propagator such that, whenever gravity is turned on and energy conditions are not violated, it moves "slower" than in the canonical set-up. This property is achieved by a non-minimal derivative coupling of the Slotheon to the Einstein tensor. We prove that spherically symmetric black holes cannot have Slotheonic hairs. We then notice that in small derivative regimes the theory has an as…
