The DBI galileons are a generalization of the galileon terms, which extend the internal galilean symmetry to an internal relativistic symmetry, and can also be thought of as generalizations of DBI which yield second order field equations. We show that, when considered as local modifications to gravity, such as in the Solar system, there exists a region of parameter space in which spherically symmetric static solutions exist and are stable. However, these solutions always exhibit superluminality, casting doubt on the existence of a standard Lorentz invariant UV completion.
We consider small perturbations about homogeneous backgrounds in dilatationally-invariant Galileon models. The issues we address are stability (absence of ghosts and gradient instabilities) and superluminality. We show that in Minkowski background, it is possible to construct the Lagrangian in such a way that any homogeneous Galileon background solution is stable and small perturbations about it are subluminal. On the other hand, in the case of FLRW backgrounds, for any Lagrangian functions there exist homogeneous background solutions to the Galileon equation of motion and time-dependence of t…
We investigate cosmological dynamics and screening mechanism of the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) Galileon model. The model has been divided into two regimes, one has positive signs in front of scalar field kinetic terms so-called the DBI galileon, another one has negative signs and it is dubbed as the DBIonic galileon. We find de Sitter solution and evolution of the Universe starting from radiation dominated era to late-time accelerated expansion in the DBI galileon model without the presence of potential term. In one of the attractors, the ghost and Laplacian instabilities vanishes for the whole e…
We re-explore the Bi- and Multi-Galileon models with trivial asymptotic conditions at infinity and show that propagation of superluminal fluctuations is a common and unavoidable feature of these theories, unlike previously claimed in the literature. We show that all Multi-Galileon theories containing a Cubic Galileon term exhibit superluminalities at large distances from a point source, and that even if the Cubic Galileon is not present one can always find sensible matter distributions in which there are superluminal modes at large distances. In the Bi-Galileon case we explicitly show that the…
We have studied primordial non-Gaussian features from a model of potential driven single field DBI Galileon inflation. We have computed the bispectrum from the three point correlation function considering all possible cross correlation between scalar and tensor modes from the proposed setup. Further, we have computed the trispectrum from four point correlation function considering the contribution from contact interaction, scalar and graviton exchange diagrams in the in-in picture. Finally we have obtained the non-Gaussian consistency conditions from the four point correlator, which results in…
It is possible to couple Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalars possessing generalized Galilean internal shift symmetries (Galileons) to nonlinear massive gravity in four dimensions, in such a manner that the interactions maintain the Galilean symmetry. Such a construction is of interest because it is not possible to couple such fields to massless General Relativity in the same way. We show that this theory has the primary constraint necessary to eliminate the Boulware-Deser ghost, thus preserving the attractive properties of both the Galileons and ghost-free massive gravity.
Under the assumption that a UV theory does not display superluminal behavior, we ask what constraints on superluminality are satisfied in the effective field theory (EFT). We study two examples of effective theories: quantum electrodynamics (QED) coupled to gravity after the electron is integrated out, and the flat-space galileon. The first is realized in nature, the second is more speculative, but they both exhibit apparent superluminality around non-trivial backgrounds. In the QED case, we attempt, and fail, to find backgrounds for which the superluminal signal advance can be made larger tha…
We investigate the soft behaviour of scalar effective field theories (EFTs) when there is a number of distinct derivative power counting parameters, $ρ_1< ρ_2<\ldots < ρ_Q$. We clarify the notion of an enhanced soft limit and use these to extend the scope of on-shell recursion techniques for scalar EFTs. As an example, we perform a detailed study of theories with two power counting parameters, $ρ_1=1$ and $ρ_2=2$, that include the shift symmetric generalised galileons. We demonstrate that the minimally enhanced soft limit uniquely picks out the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) symmetry, including DBI g…
We consider 1+3 dimensional maximally symmetric Minkowski brane embedded in a 1+4 dimensional maximally symmetric Minkowski background. The resulting 1+3 dimensional effective field theory is of DBI (Dirac-Born-Infeld) Galileon type. We use this model to study the late time acceleration of the universe. We study the deviation of the model from the concordance ΛCDM behaviour. Finally we put constraints on the model parameters using various observational data.
We derive the relativistic generalization of the Galileon, by studying the brane position modulus of a relativistic probe brane embedded in a five- dimensional bulk. In the appropriate Galilean contraction limit, we recover the complete Galileon generalization of the DGP decoupling theory and its conformal extension. All higher order interactions for the Galileon and its relativistic generalization naturally follow from the brane tension, induced curvature, and the Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary terms associated with all bulk Lovelock invariants. Our approach makes the coupling to gravity strai…
We study primordial fluctuations generated during inflation in a class of models motivated by the DBI Galileons, which are extensions of the DBI action that yield second order field equations. This class of models generalises the DBI Galileons in a similar way with K-inflation. We calculate the primordial non-Gaussianity from the bispectrum of the curvature perturbations at leading order in the slow-varying approximations. We show that the estimator for the equilateral-type non-Gaussianity, $f_{\rm NL} ^{equil}$, can be applied to measure the amplitude of the primordial bispectrum even in the …
We introduce a general class of four-dimensional effective field theories which include curved space Galileons and DBI theories possessing nonlinear shift-like symmetries. These effective theories arise from purely gravitational actions for 3-branes probing higher dimensional spaces. In the simplest case of a Minkowski brane embedded in a higher dimensional Minkowski background, the resulting four-dimensional effective field theory is the Galileon one, with its associated Galilean symmetry and second order equations. However, much more general structures are possible. We construct the general …
In this work we consider a DBI Galileon (DBIG) inflationary model and constrain its parameter space with the Planck 2015 and BICEP2/Keck array and Planck (BKP) joint analysis data by means of a potential independent analysis. We focus our attention on inflationary solutions characterized by a constant or varying sound speed as well as warp factor. We impose bounds on stringy aspects of the model, such as the warp factor $\left(f\right)$ and the induced gravity parameter $\left(\tilde{m}\right)$. We study the parameter space of the model and find that the tensor-to-scalar ratio can be as low as…
We introduce a model of potential driven DBI Galileon inflation in background N=1,D=4 SUGRA. Starting from D4-$\bar{D4}$ brane-antibrane in the bulk N=2,D=5 SUGRA including quadratic Gauss-Bonnet corrections, we derive an effective N=1,D=4 SUGRA by dimensional reduction, that results in a Coleman-Weinberg type Galileon potential. We employ this potential in modeling inflation and in subsequent study of primordial quantum fluctuations for scalar and tensor modes. Further, we estimate the major observable parameters in both de Sitter (DS) and beyond de Sitter (BDS) limits and confront them with …
We show that the DBI conformal galileons, derived from the world-volume theory of a 3-brane moving in an AdS bulk, admit a background, stable under quantum corrections, which violates the Null Energy Condition (NEC). The perturbations around this background are stable and propagate subluminally. Unlike other known examples of NEC violation, such as ghost condensation and conformal galileons, this theory also admits a stable, Poincare-invariant vacuum, with a Lorentz-invariant S-matrix satisfying standard analyticity conditions. Like conformal galileons, perturbations around deformations of the…
Very few explicit inflationary scenarios are known to generate a large bispectrum of orthogonal shape. Dirac-Born-Infeld Galileon inflation, in which an induced gravity term is added to the DBI action, is one such model. We formulate it in the language of the effective field theory of inflation by identifying the unitary gauge operators that govern the behavior of its cosmological fluctuations. We show how to recover rather easily from this its power spectrum and bispectrum, which we calculated previously using standard cosmological perturbation theory. We push our calculations up to the deter…
In this note, we study cosmic microwave background (CMB) constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity in DBI galileon models in which an induced gravity term is added to the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action. In this model, the non-Gaussianity of orthogonal shape can be generated. We provide a relation between theoretical parameters and orthogonal/equilateral non-linear parameters using the Fisher matrix approach for the CMB bispectrum. In doing so, we include the effect of the CMB transfer functions and experimental noise properties by employing the recently developed \textsf{SONG} code. The relati…
We study a cosmological scenario in which the DBI action governing the motion of a D3-brane in a higher-dimensional spacetime is supplemented with an induced gravity term. The latter reduces to the quartic Galileon Lagrangian when the motion of the brane is non-relativistic and we show that it tends to violate the null energy condition and to render cosmological fluctuations ghosts. There nonetheless exists an interesting parameter space in which a stable phase of quasi-exponential expansion can be achieved while the induced gravity leaves non trivial imprints. We derive the exact second-order…
Certain scalar fields with higher derivative interactions and novel classical and quantum mechanical properties - the Galileons - can be naturally covariantized by coupling to nonlinear massive gravity in such a way that their symmetries and number of degrees of freedom are unchanged. We study the propagating degrees of freedom in these models around cosmologically interesting backgrounds. We identify the conditions necessary for such a theory to remain ghost free, and consider when tachyonic instabilities can be avoided. We show that on the self-accelerating branch of solutions, the kinetic t…
It is shown that a disformally coupled theory in which the gravitational sector has the Einstein-Hilbert form is equivalent to a quartic DBI Galileon Lagrangian, possessing non-linear higher derivative interactions, and hence allowing for the Vainshtein effect. This Einstein Frame description considerably simplifies the dynamical equations and highlights the role of the different terms. The study of highly dense, non-relativistic environments within this description unravels the existence of a disformal screening mechanism, while the study of static vacuum configurations reveals the existence …
We use on-shell amplitude methods to systematically analyze the possibility of extended supersymmetry for 4d Galileon models, expanding on previous $\mathcal{N}=1$ results. Assuming spins $\le 1$, we prove that there exists no $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric extension of any 4d Galileons. Thus the Galileons cannot be part of the effective action of a single flat maximally supersymmetric D3-brane, and that explains why such terms do not appear in the $α'$-expansion of the abelian open superstring amplitude. For $\mathcal{N}=2$ Galileons, we show that the complex scalar $Z = ϕ+ i χ$ of the vector…
The DBI and special galileon theories exhibit a conformal symmetry at unphysical values of the spacetime dimension. We find the Lagrangian form of this symmetry. The special conformal transformations are non-linearly realized on the fields, even though conformal symmetry is unbroken. Commuting the conformal transformations with the extended shift symmetries, we find new symmetries, which when taken together with the conformal and shift symmetries close into a larger algebra. For DBI this larger algebra is the conformal algebra of the higher dimensional bulk in the brane embedding view of DBI. …
We construct four-dimensional effective field theories of a generalized DBI galileon field, the dynamics of which naturally take place on a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime. The theories are invariant under non-linear symmetry transformations, which can be thought of as being inherited from five-dimensional bulk Killing symmetries via the probe brane technique through which they are constructed. The resulting model provides a framework in which to explore the cosmological role that galileons may play as the universe evolves.
In this paper we introduce an idea of leptogenesis scenario in higher derivative gravity induced DBI Galileon framework {\it aka Galileogenesis} in presence of one-loop R-parity violating couplings in the background of a low energy effective supergravity setup. We have studied extensively the detailed feature of reheating constraints and the cosmophenomenological consequences of thermal gravitino dark matter in light of PLANCK and PDG data. Finally we have also established a direct cosmological connection among dark matter relic abundance, reheating temperature and tensor-to-scalar ratio in th…
Scalar effective field theories with enhanced soft limits behave in many ways like gauge theories and gravity. In particular, symmetries fix the structure of interactions and the tree-level S-matrix in both types of theories. We explore how this analogy persists in the presence of matter by considering theories with additional fields coupled to the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalar or the special galileon in a way that is consistent with their symmetries. Using purely on-shell arguments, we show that these theories obey analogues of the S-matrix equivalence principle whereby all matter fields mus…
The special galileon and Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theories are effective field theories of a single scalar field that have many interesting properties in flat space. These theories can be extended to all maximally symmetric spaces, where their algebras of shift symmetries are simple. We study aspects of the curved space versions of these theories: for the special galileon, we find a new compact expression for its Lagrangian in de Sitter space and a field redefinition that relates it to the previous, more complicated formulation. This field redefinition reduces to the well-studied galileon duali…
We study how the coupling with gravity of theories with non-linearly realized space-time symmetries is modified when one changes the parametrization of the coset. As an example, we focus on the so-called Galileon duality: a reparametrization which maps a Galilean invariant action into another one which enjoys the same symmetry. Starting with a standard coupling with gravity, with a parametric separation between the Planck scale and the typical scale of the coset, one ends up with a theory without such a separation. In particular an infinite set of higher-dimension operators are relevant when t…
We use on-shell amplitude techniques to study the possible $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetrizations of Galileon theories in 3+1 dimensions, both in the limit of decoupling from DBI and without. Our results are that (1) the quartic Galileon has a supersymmetrization compatible with Galileon shift symmetry ($ϕ\to ϕ+c + b_μx^μ$) for the scalar sector and an ordinary shift symmetry ($ψ\to ψ+ ξ$) for the fermion sector, and it is unique at least at 6th order in fields, but possibly not beyond; (2) the enhanced "special Galileon" symmetry is incompatible with supersymmetry; (3) there exists a quintic Ga…
We study a new screening mechanism which is present in Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI)-like theories. A scalar field with a DBI-like Lagrangian is minimally coupled to matter. In the vicinity of sufficiently dense sources, non-linearities in the scalar dominate and result in an approximately constant acceleration on a test particle, thereby suppressing the scalar force relative to gravity. Unlike generic P(X) theories, screening happens within the regime of validity of the effective field theory, thanks to the DBI symmetry. This symmetry also allows the removal of a constant field gradient, like in ga…
We study the development of caustics in shift-symmetric scalar field theories by focusing on simple waves with an $SO(p)$-symmetry in an arbitrary number of space dimensions. We show that the pure Galileon, the DBI-Galileon, and the extreme-relativistic Galileon naturally emerge as the unique set of caustic-free theories, highlighting a link between the caustic-free condition for simple $SO(p)$-waves and the existence of either a global Galilean symmetry or a global (extreme-)relativistic Galilean symmetry.
We examine AdS Galileon Lagrangians using the method of non-linear realization. By contractions 1) flat curvature limit and 2) non-relativistic brane algebra limit and 3) (1)+(2) limits we obtain DBI, Newton-Hoock and Galilean Galileons respectively. We make clear how these Lagrangians appear as invariant 4-forms and/or pseudo-invariant Wess-Zumino terms using Maurer-Cartan equations on the coset $G/SO(3,1)$. We show the equations of motion are written in terms of the MC forms only and explain why the inverse Higgs condition is obtained as the equation of motion for all cases. The supersymmetr…
We consider the existence and stability of solitons in generalized galileons, scalar field theories with higher-derivative interactions but second-order equations of motion. It has previously been proven that no stable, static solitons exist in a single galileon theory using an argument invoking the existence of zero modes for the perturbations. Here we analyze the applicability of this argument to generalized galileons and discuss how this may be avoided by having potential terms in the energy functional for the perturbations, or by including time dependence. Given the presence of potential t…
Starting from the general Horndeski action, we derive the most general effective theory for scalar perturbations around flat space that allows us to screen fifth forces via the Vainshtein mechanism. The effective theory is described by a generalization of the Galileon Lagrangian, which we use to study the stability of spherically symmetric configurations exhibiting the Vainshtein effect. In particular, we discuss the phenomenological consequences of a scalar-tensor coupling that is absent in the standard Galileon Lagrangian. This coupling controls the superluminality and stability of fluctuati…
We further develop the framework for coupling galileons and Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalar fields to a massive graviton while retaining both the non-linear symmetries of the scalars and ghost-freedom of the theory. The general construction is recast in terms of vielbeins which simplifies calculations and allows for compact expressions. Expressions for the general form of the action are derived, with special emphasis on those models which descend from maximally symmetric spaces. We demonstrate the existence of maximally symmetric solutions to the fully non-linear theory and analyze their spectr…
We show that the galileons can be thought of as Wess-Zumino terms for the spontaneous breaking of space-time symmetries. Wess-Zumino terms are terms which are not captured by the coset construction for phenomenological Lagrangians with broken symmetries. Rather they are, in d space-time dimensions, d-form potentials for (d+1)-forms which are non-trivial co-cycles in Lie algebra cohomology of the full symmetry group relative to the unbroken symmetry group. We introduce the galileon algebras and construct the non-trivial (d+1)-form co-cycles, showing that the presence of galileons and multi-gali…
We examine how the breaking of shift symmetry affects the formation of caustics for the standard canonical kinetic theory as well as for the DBI theory. We show in this case, that the standard canonical kinetic theory is caustic free but the same does not always apply for the DBI model. We make similar arguments about the conformal Galileons. Finally, it is shown that the simple wave condition is not invariant under field redefinitions and the meaning of simple waves after symmetry breaking is discussed.
We propose worldsheet formulae for wavefunction coefficients of the massive non-linear sigma model (NLSM), scalar Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI), and special Galileon (sGal) theories in de Sitter momentum space in terms of the recently proposed cosmological scattering equations constructed from conformal generators in the future boundary. The four-point integrands are assembled from simple building blocks and we identify a double copy prescription mapping the NLSM wavefunction coefficient to the DBI and sGal wavefunction coefficients, including mass deformations and curvature corrections. Finally, we…
Heterotic $M$-theory consists of a five-dimensional manifold of the form $S^1/\mathbf{Z}_2 \times M_{4}$. It has been shown that one of the two orbifold planes, the "observable" sector, can have a low energy particle spectrum which is precisely the $N=1$ supersymmetric standard model with three right-handed neutrino chiral supermultiplets. The other orbifold plane constitutes a "hidden" sector which, since its communication with the observable sector is suppressed, will be ignored in this paper. However, the finite fifth-dimension allows for the existence of three-brane solitons which, in orde…
