It is shown that if A is a stably finite C*-algebra and E is a countably generated Hilbert A-module, then E gives rise to a compact element of the Cuntz semigroup if and only if E is algebraically finitely generated and projective. It follows that if E and F are equivalent in the sense of Coward, Elliott and Ivanescu (CEI) and E is algebraically finitely generated and projective, then E and F are isomorphic. In contrast to this, we exhibit two CEI-equivalent Hilbert modules over a stably finite C*-algebra that are not isomorphic.
We prove that two dual operator spaces $X$ and $Y$ are stably isomorphic if and only if there exist completely isometric normal representations $ϕ$ and $ψ$ of $X$ and $Y$, respectively, and ternary rings of operators $M_1, M_2$ such that $ϕ(X)= [M_2^*ψ(Y)M_1]^{-w^*}$ and $ψ(Y)=[M_2ϕ(X)M_1^*].$ We prove that this is equivalent to certain canonical dual operator algebras associated with the operator spaces being stably isomorphic. We apply these operator space results to prove that certain dual operator algebras are stably isomorphic if and only if they are isomorphic. We provide examples motiva…
We prove that ample groupoids with sigma-compact unit spaces are equivalent if and only if they are stably isomorphic in an appropriate sense, and relate this to Matui's notion of Kakutani equivalence. We use this result to show that diagonal-preserving stable isomorphisms of graph C*-algebras or Leavitt path algebras give rise to isomorphisms of the groupoids of the associated stabilised graphs. We deduce that the Leavitt path algebras $L_Z(E_2)$ and $L_Z(E_{2-})$ are not stably *-isomorphic.
Rigged modules over an operator algebra are a generalization of Hilbert modules over a $C^{\star}$-algebra. We characterize the rigged modules over an operator algebra $\mathcal A$ which are orthogonally complemented in $C_\infty(\mathcal A),$ the space of infinite columns with entries in $\mathcal A.$ We show that every such rigged module `restricts' to a bimodule of Morita equivalence between appropriate stably isomorphic operator algebras.
We give conditions for when continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided shift spaces implies flow equivalence of the associated two-sided shift spaces. Using groupoid techniques, we prove that this is always the case for shifts of finite type. This generalises a result of Matsumoto and Matui from the irreducible to the general case. We also prove that a pair of one-sided shift spaces of finite type are continuously orbit equivalent if and only if their groupoids are isomorphic, and that the corresponding two-sided shifts are flow equivalent if and only if the groupoids are stably isomorphic. As …
A study of Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules over commutative $C^*$-algebras is carried out and used to establish a sufficient condition for two quantum Heisenberg manifolds to be isomorphic.
We prove that two unital dual operator algebras A, B are stably isomorphic if and only if they are Delta-equivalent, if and only if they have completely isometric normal representations a, b on Hilbert spaces H, K respectively and there exists a ternary ring of operators M \subset B(H,K) such that a(A)=[M* b(B) M]^{-w^*} and b(B)=[M a(A) M*]^{-w^*}.

We introduce the notion of $Δ$ and $σ\,Δ-$ pairs for operator algebras and characterise $Δ-$ pairs through their categories of left operator modules over these algebras. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of $Δ$-Morita equivalent operator spaces and prove a similar theorem about their algebraic extensions. We prove that $σΔ$-Morita equivalent operator spaces are stably isomorphic and vice versa. Finally, we study unital operator spaces, emphasising their left (resp. right) multiplier algebras, and prove theorems that refer to $Δ$-Morita equivalence of their algebraic extensions.
Motivated by two norm equations used to characterize the Friedrichs angle, this paper studies $C^*$-isomorphisms associated with two projections by introducing the matched triple and the semi-harmonious pair of projections. A triple $(P,Q,H)$ is said to be matched if $H$ is a Hilbert $C^*$-module, $P$ and $Q$ are projections on $H$ such that their infimum $P\wedge Q$ exists as an element of $\mathcal{L}(H)$, where $\mathcal{L}(H)$ denotes the set of all adjointable operators on $H$. The $C^*$-subalgebras of $\mathcal{L}(H)$ generated by elements in $\{P-P\wedge Q, Q-P\wedge Q, I\}$ and $\{P,Q,…
This paper studies the problems of embedding and isomorphism for countably generated Hilbert C*-modules over commutative C*-algebras. When the fibre dimensions differ sufficiently, relative to the dimension of the spectrum, we show that there is an embedding between the modules. This result continues to hold over recursive subhomogeneous C*-algebras. For certain modules, including all modules over $C_0(X)$ when $dim X \leq 3$, isomorphism and embedding are determined by the restrictions to the sets where the fibre dimensions are constant. These considerations yield results for the Cuntz semigr…
Let $M_q(H_{\mathbb{R}})$ be the $q$-Gaussian von Neumann algebra associated with a separable infinite dimensional real Hilbert space $H_{\mathbb{R}}$ where $-1 < q < 1$. We show that $M_q(H_{\mathbb{R}}) \not \simeq M_0(H_{\mathbb{R}})$ for $-1 < q \not = 0 < 1$. The C$^\ast$-algebraic counterpart of this result was obtained recently in [BCKW22]. Using ideas of Ozawa we show that this non-isomorphism result also holds on the level of von Neumann algebras.
We continue the investigation of the isomorphism problem for multiplier algebras of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces with the complete Nevanlinna-Pick property. In contrast to previous work in this area, we do not study these spaces by identifying them with restrictions of a universal space, namely the Drury-Arveson space. Instead, we work directly with the Hilbert spaces and their reproducing kernels. In particular, we show that two multiplier algebras of Nevanlinna-Pick spaces on the same set are equal if and only if the Hilbert spaces are equal. Most of the article is devoted to the study …
In previous work, we defined and studied $Σ^*$-modules, a class of Hilbert $C^*$-modules over $Σ^*$-algebras (the latter are $C^*$-algebras that are sequentially closed in the weak operator topology). The present work continues this study by developing the appropriate $Σ^*$-algebraic analogue of the notion of strong Morita equivalence for $C^*$-algebras. We define strong $Σ^*$-Morita equivalence, prove a few characterizations, look at the relationship with equivalence of categories of a certain type of Hilbert space representation, study $Σ^*$-versions of the interior and exterior tensor produ…
Let $E = (E^0, E^1, r, s)$ be a topological graph with no sinks such that $E^0$ and $E^1$ are compact. We show that when $C^*(E)$ is finite, there is a natural isomorphism $C^*(E) \cong C(E^\infty) \rtimes \mathbb{Z}$, where $E^\infty$ is the infinite path space of $E$ and the action is given by the backwards shift on $E^\infty$. Combining this with a result of Pimsner, we show the properties of being AF-embeddable, quasidiagonal, stably finite, and finite are equivalent for $C^*(E)$ and can be characterized by a natural "combinatorial" condition on $E$.
For a real Hilbert space $H_{\mathbb{R}}$ and $-1 < q < 1$ Bozejko and Speicher introduced the C$^\ast$-algebra $A_q(H_{\mathbb{R}})$ and von Neumann algebra $M_q(H_{\mathbb{R}})$ of $q$-Gaussian variables. We prove that if $\dim(H_{\mathbb{R}}) = \infty$ and $-1 < q < 1, q \not = 0$ then $M_q(H_{\mathbb{R}})$ does not have the Akemann-Ostrand property with respect to $A_q(H_{\mathbb{R}})$. It follows that $A_q(H_{\mathbb{R}})$ is not isomorphic to $A_0(H_{\mathbb{R}})$. This gives an answer to the C$^\ast$-algebraic part of Question 1.1 and Question 1.2 in [NeZe18].
We combine the notion of norming algebra introduced by Pop, Sinclair and Smith with a result of Pisier to show that if A_1 and A_2 are operator algebras, then any bounded epimorphism of A_1 onto A_2 is completely bounded provided that A_2 contains a norming C*-subalgebra. We use this result to give some insights into Kadison's Similarity Problem: we show that every faithful bounded homomorphism of a C*-algebra on a Hilbert space has completely bounded inverse, and show that a bounded representation of a C*-algebra is similar to a *-representation precisely when the image operator algebra λ-nor…
This paper addresses a conjecture of Kadison and Kastler that a von Neumann algebra M on a Hilbert space H should be unitarily equivalent to each sufficiently close von Neumann algebra N and, moreover, the implementing unitary can be chosen to be close to the identity operator. This is known to be true for amenable von Neumann algebras and in this paper we describe new classes of non-amenable factors for which the conjecture is valid. These are based on tensor products of the hyperfinite II_1 factor with crossed products of abelian algebras by suitably chosen discrete groups.
We study the analogy between number fields and function fields in one variable over finite fields. The main result is an isomorphism between the Hilbert class fields of class number one and a family of the function fields $\mathbf{F}_q(C)$ over a desingularized algebraic curve $C$. Our proof is based on the K-theory of the Serre $C^*$-algebras and birational geometry of the curve $C$. We apply the isomorphism to construct explicit generators of the Hilbert class fields coming from the torsion submodules of the Drinfeld module.
A Hilbert bimodule is a right Hilbert module X over a C*-algebra A together with a left action of A as adjointable operators on X. We consider families X = {X_s :s\in P} of Hilbert bimodules, indexed by a semigroup P, which are endowed with a multiplication which implements isomorphisms X_s\otimes_A X_t \to X_{st}; such a family is a called a product system. We define a generalized Cuntz- Pimsner algebra O_X, and we show that every twisted crossed product of A by P can be realized as O_X for a suitable product system X. Assuming P is quasi- lattice ordered in the sense of Nica, we analyze a ce…
Let A be a C*-algebra and I a closed two-sided ideal of A. We use the Hilbert C*-modules picture of the Cuntz semigroup to investigate the relations between the Cuntz semigroups of I, A and A/I. We obtain a relation on two elements of the Cuntz semigroup of A that characterizes when they are equal in the Cuntz semigroup of A/I. As a corollary, we show that the Cuntz semigroup functor is exact. Replacing the Cuntz equivalence relation of Hilbert modules by their isomorphism, we obtain a generalization of Kasparov's Stabilization theorem.
We introduce a Morita type equivalence: two operator algebras $A$ and $B$ are called strongly $Δ$-equivalent if they have completely isometric representations $α$ and $β$ respectively and there exists a ternary ring of operators $M$ such that $α(A)$ (resp. $β(B)$) is equal to the norm closure of the linear span of the set $M^*β(B)M, $ (resp. $Mα(A)M^*$). We study the properties of this equivalence. We prove that if two operator algebras $A$ and $B,$ possessing countable approximate identities, are strongly $Δ$-equivalent, then the operator algebras $A\otimes \cl K$ and $B\otimes \cl K$ are iso…
Let $A$ be a separable unital C*-algebra and let $π: A \ra \Lc(\Hf)$ be a faithful representation of $A$ on a separable Hilbert space $\Hf$ such that $π(A) \cap \Kc(\Hf) = \{0 \}$. We show that $\Oc_E$, the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated to the Hilbert $A$-bimodule $E = \Hf \ot_{\C} A$, is simple and purely infinite. If $A$ is nuclear and belongs to the bootstrap class to which the UCT applies, then the same applies to $\Oc_E$. Hence by the Kirchberg-Phillips Theorem the isomorphism class of $\Oc_E$ only depends on the $K$-theory of $A$ and the class of the unit.
We analzye Rieffel's construction of generalized fixed point algebras in the setting of group actions on Hilbert modules. Let G be a locally compact group acting on a C*-algebra B. We construct a Hilbert module F over the reduced crossed product of G and B, using a pair (E, R), where E is an equivariant Hilbert module over B and R is a dense subspace of E with certain properties. The generalized fixed point algebra is the C*-algebra of compact operators on F. Any Hilbert module over the reduced crossed product arises by this construction for a pair (E, R) that is unique up to isomorphism. A ne…
For $A$ a $C^*$-algebra, $E_1, E_2$ two Hilbert bimodules over $A$, and a fixed isomorphism $χ: E_1\otimes_AE_2\to E_2\otimes_AE_1$, we consider the problem of computing the $K$-theory of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra ${\mathcal O}_{E_2\otimes_A{\mathcal O}_{E_1}}$ obtained by extending the scalars and by iterating the Pimsner construction. The motivating examples are a commutative diagram of Douglas and Howe for the Toeplitz operators on the quarter plane, and the Toeplitz extensions associated by Pimsner and Voiculescu to compute the $K$-theory of a crossed product. The applications are for Hilb…
In [11] the authors investigated a family of quotient Hilbert modules in the Cowen-Douglas class over the unit disk constructed from classical Hilbert modules such as the Hardy and Bergman modules. In this paper we extend the results to the multivariable case of higher multiplicity. Moreover, similarity as well as isomorphism results are obtained.
We consider a class of C*-algebras associated to one parameter continuous tensor product systems of Hilbert modules, which can be viewed as continuous counterparts of Pimsner's Toeplitz algebras. By exhibiting a homotopy of quasihomomorphisms, we prove that those algebras are $K$-contractible. One special case is closely related to the Rieffel-Wiener-Hopf extension of a crossed product by R considered by Rieffel and by Pimsner and Voiculescu, and can be used to produce a new proof of Connes' analogue of the Thom isomorphism and in particular of Bott periodicity. Another special case is closely…
Let $E$ and $F$ be two Hilbert $C^*$-modules over $C^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$, respectively. Let $T$ be a surjective linear isometry from $E$ onto $F$ and $φ$ a map from $A$ into $B$. We will prove in this paper that if the $C^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$ are commutative, then $T$ preserves the inner products and $T$ is a module map, i.e., there exists a $*$-isomorphism $φ$ between the $C^*$-algebras such that $$ \langle Tx,Ty\rangle=φ(\langle x,y\rangle), $$ and $$ T(xa)=T(x)φ(a). $$ In case $A$ or $B$ is noncommutative $C^*$-algebra, $T$ may not satisfy the equations above in general. We will also…
A well-known theorem of Paulsen says that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a unital operator algebra and $ϕ:\mathcal{A}\to B(\mathcal{H})$ is a unital completely bounded homomorphism, then $ϕ$ is similar to a completely contractive map $ϕ'$. Motivated by classification problems for Hilbert space contractions, we are interested in making the inverse $ϕ'^{-1}$ completely contractive as well whenever the map $ϕ$ has a completely bounded inverse. We show that there exist invertible operators $X$ and $Y$ such that the map $$ XaX^{-1}\mapsto Yϕ(a)Y^{-1} $$ is completely contractive and is "almost" isometric on a…
For a $C^*$-algebra $A$ of compact operators and a compact manifold $M,$ we prove that the Hodge theory holds for $A$-elliptic complexes of pseudodifferential operators acting on smooth sections of finitely generated projective $A$-Hilbert bundles over $M.$ For these $C^*$-algebras, we get also a topological isomorphism between the cohomology groups of an $A$-elliptic complex and the space of harmonic elements. Consequently, the cohomology groups appear to be Banach spaces. We prove as well, that if the Hodge theory holds for a complex in the category of Hilbert $A$-modules and continuous adjo…
We introduce a way of regarding Hilbert von Neumann modules as spaces of operators between Hilbert space, not unlike [Skei], but in an apparently much simpler manner and involving far less machinery. We verify that our definition is equivalent to that of [Skei], by verifying the `Riesz lemma' or what is called `self-duality' in [Skei]. An advantage with our approach is that we can totally side-step the need to go through $C^*$-modules and avoid the two stages of completion - first in norm, then in the strong operator topology - involved in the former approach. We establish the analogue of the …
This paper addresses the isomorphism problem for the universal (nonself-adjoint) operator algebras generated by a row contraction subject to homogeneous polynomial relations. We find that two such algebras are isometrically isomorphic if and only if the defining polynomial relations are the same up to a unitary change of variables, and that this happens if and only if the associated subproduct systems are isomorphic. The proof makes use of the complex analytic structure of the character space, together with some recent results on subproduct systems. Restricting attention to commutative operato…
In this paper, certain classes of Hilbert spaces of Dirichlet series with weighted norms and their corresponding multiplier algebras will be explored. For a sequence $\{w_n\}_{n=n_0}^\infty $ of positive numbers, define \[\mathcal H^\textbf{w}=\left\{\sum_{n=n_0}^\infty a_nn^{-s}:\sum_{n=n_0}^\infty |a_n|^2 w_n<\infty\right\}.\] Hedenmalm, Lindqvist and Seip considered the case in which $w_n\equiv 1$ and classified the multiplier algebra of $\mathcal H^\textbf{w}$ for this space in \cite {HLS}. In \cite{M}, McCarthy classified the multipliers on $\mathcal H^\textbf{w}$ when the weights are giv…
It is shown that a C*-algebra generated by any faithful covariant representation of a Hilbert bimodule X is canonically isomorphic to the crossed product associated to X provided that Rieffel's induced representation functor X-ind is topologically free. It is discussed how this result could be applied to universal C*-algebras generated by relations with a circle gauge action. In particular, it leads to generalizations of isomorphism theorems for various crossed products, and is shown to be equivalent to Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for finite graph C*-algebras (on that occasion an intrigui…
