We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study propagation of sound waves in strongly coupled (2+1) dimensional conformal magnetic fluids. Our computation provides a nontrivial consistency check of the viscous magneto-hydrodynamics of Hartnoll-Kovtun-Muller-Sachdev to leading order in the external field. Depending on the behavior of the magnetic field in the hydrodynamic limit, we show that it can lead to further attenuation of sound waves in the (2+1) dimensional conformal plasma, or reduce the speed of sound. We present both field theory and dual supergravity descriptions of these phenomena. While to the leading order in momenta the dispersion of the sound waves obtained from the dual supergravity description agrees with the one predicted from field theory, we find a discrepancy at higher order. This suggests that further corrections to HKMS magneto-hydrodynamics are necessary.
The holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) is investigated for a black hole under the minimal geometric deformation (MGD) procedure, created by gravitational decoupling via an anisotropic fluid, in an AdS/CFT on the brane setup. The respective HEE corrections are computed and confronted to the corresponding corrections for both the standard MGD black holes and the Schwarzschild ones.
The Rivlin-Ericksen model is one of the oldest models in fluid dynamics to describe non-Newtonian properties. The model comes with two independent transports at second order. In this paper, we study the relativistic origin of the Rivlin-Ericksen fluid. Starting from a relativistic Weyl invariant uncharged fluid in $3+1$ dimensions, we reduce it over light-cone directions and obtain a generic non-relativistic uncharged fluid in one lower dimension with all possible second order terms in the constitutive relations. We observe that the Rivlin-Ericksen fluid is a subclass of our generalised non-re…
We study second-order hydrodynamic transport in strongly coupled non-conformal field theories with holographic gravity duals in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. We first derive new Kubo formulae for five second-order transport coefficients in non-conformal fluids in $(3+1)$ dimensions. We then apply them to holographic RG flows induced by scalar operators of dimension $Δ=3$. For general background solutions of the dual bulk geometry, we find explicit expressions for the five transport coefficients at infinite coupling and show that a specific combination, $\tilde{H}=2ητ_π-2(κ-κ^*)-λ_2$, al…
We consider planar hairy black holes in five dimensions with a real scalar field in the Breitenlohner-Freedman window and show that is possible to derive a universal formula for the holographic speed of sound for any mixed boundary conditions of the scalar field. As an example, we locally construct the most general class of planar black holes coupled to a single scalar field in the consistent truncation of type IIB supergravity that preserves the $SO(3)\times SO(3)$ R-symmetry group of the gauge theory. We obtain the speed of sound for different values of the vacuum expectation value of a sing…
Within the context of AdS/CFT, the gravity dual of an s-wave superfluid is given by scalar QED on an asymptotically AdS spacetime. While this conclusion is vastly supported by numerical arguments, here we provide an analytical proof that this is indeed the case. Working at zero temperature, we explicitly find the quadratic action for the superfluid phonon at the boundary in an arbitrary number of dimensions and for an arbitrary scalar field potential, recovering the known dispersion relation for conformal first sound.
We study the dense nuclear matter within the holographic Sakai-Sugimoto model. The nuclear matter is described via instantons in bulk, whose size has the new temperature dependency. Then, properties of nuclear matter have been studied for different temperatures. For example, free energy and baryon density are examined for different temperature values. Also, nuclear matter properties, like the speed of sound and connection of nuclear matter and quark matter, are discussed. As we have increased the temperature, the phase transition value has been changed from baryon to quark, which is non-physic…
We develop analytic techniques to construct the leading dissipative terms in a derivative expansion of holographic fluids. Our basic ingredient is the Crnkovic-Witten symplectic current of classical gravity which we use to extract the dissipative transport coefficients of holographic fluids, assuming knowledge of the thermodynamics and the near horizon geometries of the bulk black hole geometries. We apply our techniques to non-conformal neutral fluids to reproduce previous results on the shear viscosity and generalise a known expression for the bulk viscosity.
We investigate the stress tensor for holographic fluids at the finite cutoff surface through perturbing the Schwarzchild-AdS black brane background to the first order perturbations in the scenario of fluid/gravity correspondence. We investigate the most general perturbations of the metric without any gauge fixing. We consider various boundary conditions and demonstrate the properties of the corresponding holographic fluids. The critical fact is that the spatial components of the first order stress tensors of the holographic fluids can be rewritten in a concordant form, which implicates that th…
Based on the gauge/gravity correspondence, the hydrodynamic response coefficients, shear and Hall viscosities, have been studied. The holographic model of Einstein-Maxwell- AdS $(3+1)$-dimensional system additionally coupled with the another gauge field mimicking the {\it dark matter} sector, as well as, gravitational Chern-Simons term bounded with a dynamical scalar field, were taken into account. Condensation of the scalar field provides the parity violating term. Both shear and Hall viscosities have been calculated and their dependence on $α$ - the coupling constant between matter and {\it …
A model of inflation produced by a viscous fluid is investigated and its compatibility with the holographic principle at the very early universe (as recently formulated for the holographic universe with a holographic cut-off radius) is demonstrated. Specifically, ensuing from the model, the corresponding scale factor and infrared cut-off are analytically calculated, which are taken to be the particle and future event horizon for inflation, respectively. Using them, the energy conservation law, in the holographic point of view, is obtained. In this way, total equivalence of viscous fluid inflat…
In this thesis, we study a variety of phenomena in strongly coupled quantum field theories by performing calculations in their gravitational duals. We compute entanglement entropy in a variety of holographic systems, paying particular attention to its long-distance behaviour, characterised by a term proportional to surface area. This term is known to decrease along Lorentz-invariant renormalisation group flows, suggesting that it may count massless degrees of freedom. We find that more general deformations may increase this area term, possibly indicating an enhanced number of long-distance deg…
We compute constitutive relations for a charged $(2+1)$ dimensional Schrödinger fluid up to first order in derivative expansion, using holographic techniques. Starting with a locally boosted, asymptotically $AdS$, $4+1$ dimensional charged black brane geometry, we uplift that to ten dimensions and perform $TsT$ transformations to obtain an effective five dimensional local black brane solution with asymptotically Schrödinger isometries. By suitably implementing the holographic techniques, we compute the constitutive relations for the effective fluid living on the boundary of this space-time and…
In this paper, we obtain a holographic model of dark energy using the fluid/gravity duality. This model will be dual to a higher dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, and we would use fluid/gravity duality to relate to the parameters of this black hole to such a cosmological model. We will also analyze the thermodynamics of such a solution, and discuss the stability model. Finally, we use cosmological data to constraint the parametric space of this dark energy model. Thus, we will use observational data to perform cosmography for this holographic model based on fluid/gravity duality.
We consider a simple class of holographic massive gravity models for which the dual field theories break translational invariance spontaneously. We study, in detail, the longitudinal sector of the quasi-normal modes at zero charge density. We identify three hydrodynamic modes in this sector: a pair of sound modes and one diffusion mode. We numerically compute the dispersion relations of the hydrodynamic modes. The obtained speed and the attenuation of the sound modes are in agreement with the hydrodynamic predictions. On the contrary, we surprisingly find disagreement in the case of the diffus…
Relativistic fluid hydrodynamics, organized as an effective field theory in the velocity gradients, has zero radius of convergence due to the presence of non-hydrodynamic excitations. Likewise, the theory of elasticity of brittle solids, organized as an effective field theory in the strain gradients, has zero radius of convergence due to the process of the thermal nucleation of cracks. Viscoelastic materials share properties of both fluids and solids. We use holographic gauge theory/gravity correspondence to study all order hydrodynamics of relativistic viscoelastic media.
We use holography to study sound modes of strongly-interacting conformal field theories with non-zero temperature, $T$, and $U(1)$ chemical potential, $μ$. Specifically, we consider charged black brane solutions of Einstein gravity in $(3+1)$-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field with Dirac-Born-Infeld action, representing a spacetime-filling brane. The brane action has two free parameters: the tension and the non-linearity parameter, which controls higher-order terms in the field strength. For all values of the tension, non-linearity parameter, and $T/μ$, and at suf…
We study the linearized transport of transverse momentum and charge in a conjectured field theory dual to a black brane solution of Horava gravity with Lifshitz exponent $z=1$. As expected from general hydrodynamic reasoning, we find that both of these quantities are diffusive over distance and time scales larger than the inverse temperature. We compute the diffusion constants and conductivities of transverse momentum and charge, as well the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, and find that they differ from their relativistic counterparts. To derive these results, we propose how the h…
We study hydrodynamics of four-dimensional non-conformal holographic plasma with non-equal central charges $c\ne a$ at the ultraviolet fixed point. We compute equation of state, the speed of sound waves, transport coefficients (shear and bulk viscosities), and discuss causality. We study the asymptotic character of the hydrodynamic series for the homogeneous and isotropic expansion of the plasma. We perform computations for finite $c-a\ne 0$, but to leading nonvanishing order in the conformal symmetry breaking coupling.
The electrons in graphene for energies close to the Dirac point have been found to form strongly interacting fluid. Taking this fact into account we have extended previous work on the transport properties of graphene by taking into account possible interactions between the currents and adding the external magnetic field directed perpendicularly to the graphene sheet. The perpendicular mag- netic field B severely modifies the transport parameters. In the present approach the quantization of the spectrum and formation of Landau levels is ignored. Gauge/gravity duality has been used in the probe …
Gravity/fluid correspondence becomes an important tool to investigate the strongly correlated fluids. We carefully investigate the holographic fluids at the finite cutoff surface by considering different boundary conditions in the scenario of gravity/fluid correspondence. We find that the sonic velocity of the boundary fluids at the finite cutoff surface is critical to clarify the superficial similarity between bulk viscosity and perturbation of the pressure for the holographic fluid, where we set a special boundary condition at the finite cutoff surface to explicitly express this superficial …
We initiate the investigation of the zero temperature holographic superfluids with two competing orders, where besides the vacuum phase, two one band superfluid phases, the coexistent superfluid phase has also been found in the AdS soliton background for the first time. We construct the complete phase diagram in the $e-μ$ plane by numerics, which is consistent with our qualitative analysis. Furthermore, we calculate the corresponding optical conductivity and sound speed by the linear response theory. The onset of pole of optical conductivity at $ω=0$ indicates that the spontaneous breaking pha…
We discuss the holographic reconstruction of four-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter Robinson-Trautman spacetime from boundary data. We use for that a resummed version of the derivative expansion. The latter involves a vector field, which is interpreted as the dual-holographic-fluid velocity field and is naturally defined in the Eckart frame. In this frame the analysis of the non-perfect holographic energy-momentum tensor is considerably simplified. The Robinson-Trautman fluid is at rest and its time evolution is a heat-diffusion kind of phenomenon: the Robinson-Trautman equation plays …
Solutions to Einstein's vacuum equations in three dimensions are locally maximally symmetric. They are distinguished by their global properties and their investigation often requires a choice of gauge. Although analyses of this sort have been performed abundantly, several relevant questions remain. These questions include the interplay between the standard Bondi gauge and the Eddington--Finkelstein type of gauge used in the fluid/gravity holographic reconstruction of these spacetimes, as well as the Fefferman--Graham gauge, when available i.e. in anti de Sitter. The goal of the present work is…
We explore the role of torsion as source of spin current in strongly interacting conformal fluids using holography. We establish the constitutive relations of the basic hydrodynamic variables, the energy-momentum tensor and the spin current based on the classification of the spin sources in irreducible Lorentz representations. The fluids we consider are assumed to be described by the five dimensional Lovelock-Chern-Simons gravity with independent vielbein and spin connection. We construct a hydrodynamic expansion that involves the stress tensor and the spin current and compute the correspondin…
