An \emph{automorphic loop} (or \emph{A-loop}) is a loop whose inner mappings are automorphisms. Every element of a commutative A-loop generates a group, and $(xy)^{-1} = x^{-1}y^{-1}$ holds. Let $Q$ be a finite commutative A-loop and $p$ a prime. The loop $Q$ has order a power of $p$ if and only if every element of $Q$ has order a power of $p$. The loop $Q$ decomposes as a direct product of a loop of odd order and a loop of order a power of 2. If $Q$ is of odd order, it is solvable. If $A$ is a subloop of $Q$ then $|A|$ divides $|Q|$. If $p$ divides $|Q|$ then $Q$ contains an element of order $p$. If there is a finite simple nonassociative commutative A-loop, it is of exponent 2.
In this short paper, we survey the results on commutative automorphic loops and give a new construction method. Using this method, we present new classes of commutative automorphic loops of exponent 2 with trivial center.
We prove that every finite, commutative automorphic loop is solvable. We also prove that every finite, automorphic 2-loop is solvable. The main idea of the proof is to associate a simple Lie algebra of characteristic 2 to a hypothetical finite simple commutative automorphic loop. The "crust of a thin sandwich" theorem of Zel'manov and Kostrikin leads to a contradiction.
A loop is automorphic if all its inner mappings are automorphisms. We construct the free commutative automorphic $2$-generated loop of nilpotency class $3$. It has dimension $8$ over the integers.
A loop is said to be automorphic if its inner mappings are automorphisms. For a prime $p$, denote by $\mathcal A_p$ the class of all $2$-generated commutative automorphic loops $Q$ possessing a central subloop $Z\cong \mathbb Z_p$ such that $Q/Z\cong\mathbb Z_p\times\mathbb Z_p$. Upon describing the free $2$-generated nilpotent class two commutative automorphic loop and the free $2$-generated nilpotent class two commutative automorphic $p$-loop $F_p$ in the variety of loops whose elements have order dividing $p^2$ and whose associators have order dividing $p$, we show that every loop of $\math…
A loop whose inner mappings are automorphisms is an \emph{automorphic loop} (or \emph{A-loop}). We characterize commutative (A-)loops with middle nucleus of index 2 and solve the isomorphism problem. Using this characterization and certain central extensions based on trilinear forms, we construct several classes of commutative A-loops of order a power of 2. We initiate the classification of commutative A-loops of small orders and also of order $p^3$, where $p$ is a prime.
There is a one-to-one correspondence between involutory latin quandles and uniquely $2$-divisible Bruck loops. Bruck loops of odd prime power order are centrally nilpotent. Using linear-algebraic approach to central extensions, we enumerate Bruck loops (and hence involutory latin quandles) of order $3^k$ for $k\le 5$, except for those loops that are central extensions of the cyclic group of order $3$ by the elementary abelian group of order $3^4$. Among the constructed loops there is a Bruck loop of order $3^5$ whose associated $Γ$-loop is not a commutative automorphic loop. We independently e…
We show that each half-automorphism of a finite automorphic Moufang loop is trivial. In general this is not true for finite left automorphic Moufang loops and for finite automorphic loops.
Automorphic loops are loops in which all inner mappings are automorphisms. This variety of loops includes, for instance, groups and commutative Moufang loops. We study uniquely 2-divisible automorphic loops, particularly automorphic loops of odd order, from the point of view of the associated Bruck loops (motivated by Glauberman's work on uniquely 2-divisible Moufang loops) and the associated Lie rings (motivated by a construction of Wright). We prove that every automorphic loop $Q$ of odd order is solvable, contains an element of order $p$ for every prime $p$ dividing $|Q|$, and $|S|$ divides…
These notes accompany a series of three lectures on automorphic loops to be delivered by the author at Workshops Loops '15 (Ohrid, Macedonia, 2015). Automorphic loops are loops in which all inner mappings are automorphisms. The first paper on automorphic loops appeared in 1956 and there has been a surge of interest in the topic since 2010. The purpose of these notes is to introduce the methods used in the study of automorphic loops to a wider audience of researchers working in nonassociative mathematics. In the first lecture we establish basic properties of automorphic loops (flexibility, powe…
A loop is (right) automorphic if all its (right) inner mappings are automorphisms. Using the classification of primitive groups of small degrees, we show that there is no nonassociative simple commutative automorphic loop of order less than $2^{12}$, and no nonassociative simple automorphic loop of order less that 2500. We obtain examples of nonassociative simple right automorphic loops.
A loop is automorphic if its inner mappings are automorphisms. Using so-called associated operations, we show that every commutative automorphic loop of odd prime power order is centrally nilpotent. Starting with anisotropic planes in the vector space of $2\times 2$ matrices over the field of prime order $p$, we construct a family of automorphic loops of order $p^3$ with trivial center.
Automorphic loops are loops in which all inner mappings are automorphisms. A large class of automorphic loops is obtained as follows: Let $m$ be a positive even integer, $G$ an abelian group, and $α$ an automorphism of $G$ that satisfies $α^2=1$ if $m>2$. Then the dihedral-like automorphic loop $\mathrm{Dih}(m,G,α)$ is defined on $\mathbb Z_m\times G$ by $(i,u)(j,v)=(i+j, ((-1)^{j}u+v)α^{ij})$. We prove that two finite dihedral-like automorphic loops $\mathrm{Dih}(m,G,α)$, $\mathrm{Dih}(\overline{m},\overline{G},\overlineα)$ are isomorphic if and only if $m=\overline{m}$, $G=\overline{G}$, and…
Automorphic loops are loops in which all inner mappings are automorphisms. This variety of loops includes groups and commutative Moufang loops. A half-isomorphism $f : G \longrightarrow K$ between multiplicative systems $G$ and $K$ is a bijection from $G$ onto $K$ such that $f(ab)\in\{f(a)f(b), f(b)f(a)\}$ for any $a,b\in G$. A half-isomorphism is trivial when it is either an isomorphism or an anti-isomorphism. Consider the class of automorphic loops such that the equation $x\cdot(x\cdot y) = (y\cdot x)\cdot x $ is equivalent to $x\cdot y = y\cdot x$. Here we show that this class of loops incl…
A loop is automorphic if all its inner mappings are automorphisms. We construct a large family of automorphic loops as follows. Let $R$ be a commutative ring, $V$ an $R$-module, $E=\mathrm{End}_R(V)$ the ring of $R$-endomorphisms of $V$, and $W$ a subgroup of $(E,+)$ such that $ab=ba$ for every $a$, $b\in W$ and $1+a$ is invertible for every $a\in W$. Then $Q_{R,V}(W)$ defined on $W\times V$ by $(a,u)(b,v) = (a+b,u(1+b)+v(1-a))$ is an automorphic loop. A special case occurs when $R=k<K=V$ is a field extension and $W$ is a $k$-subspace of $K$ such that $k1\cap W = 0$, naturally embedded into $\…
Given a uniquely 2-divisible group $G$, we study a commutative loop $(G,\circ)$ which arises as a result of a construction in \cite{baer}. We investigate some general properties and applications of $\circ$ and determine a necessary and sufficient condition on $G$ in order for $(G, \circ)$ to be Moufang. In \cite{greer14}, it is conjectured that $G$ is metabelian if and only if $(G, \circ)$ is an automorphic loop. We answer a portion of this conjecture in the affirmative: in particular, we show that if $G$ is a split metabelian group of odd order, then $(G, \circ)$ is automorphic.
We define a new variety of loops we call $Γ$-loops. After showing $Γ$-loops are power associative, our main goal will be showing a categorical isomorphism between Bruck loops of odd order and $Γ$-loops of odd order. Once this has been established, we can use the well known structure of Bruck loops of odd order to derive the Odd Order, Lagrange and Cauchy Theorems for $Γ$-loops of odd order, as well as the nontriviality of the center of finite $Γ$-$p$-loops ($p$ odd). Finally, we answer a question posed by Jedlička, Kinyon and Vojtěchovský about the existence of Hall $π$-subloops and Sylow $p$-…
The decomposition theorem for torsion abelian groups holds analogously for torsion commutative diassociative loops. With this theorem in mind, we investigate commutative diassociative loops satisfying the additional condition (trivially satisfied in the abelian group case) that all $n$th powers are central, for a fixed $n$. For $n=2$, we get precisely commutative $C$ loops. For $n=3$, a prominent variety is that of commutative Moufang loops. Many analogies between commutative C and Moufang loops have been noted in the literature, often obtained by interchanging the role of the primes 2 and 3. …
We construct two infinite series of Moufang loops of exponent $3$ whose commutative center (i.e. the set of elements that commute with all elements of the loop) is not a normal subloop. In particular, we obtain examples of such loops of orders $3^8$ and $3^{11}$ one of which can be defined as the Moufang triplication of the free Burnside group $B(3,3)$.
C-loops are loops satisfying $x(y(yz))=((xy)y)z$. They often behave analogously to Moufang loops and they are closely related to Steiner triple systems and combinatorics. We initiate the study of C-loops by proving: (i) Steiner loops are C-loops, (ii) C-loops are alternative, inverse property loops with squares in the nucleus, (iii) the nucleus of a C-loop is a normal subgroup, (iv) C-loops modulo their nucleus are Steiner loops, (v) C-loops are power associative, power alternative but not necessarily diassociative, (vi) torsion commutative C-loops are products of torsion abelian groups and to…
We develop some general ideas to study connected quandles of prime power size and we classify non-affine connected quandles of size $p^3$ for $p>3$, using a combination of group theoretical and universal algebraic tools. As a byproduct we obtain a classification of Bruck loops of the same size and that they are in one-to-one correspondence with commutative automorphic loops.
The multiplicative loops of Jha-Johnson semifields are non-automorphic finite loops whose left and right nuclei are the multiplicative groups of a field extension of their centers. They yield examples of finite loops with non-trivial automorphism group and non-trivial inner mappings. Upper bounds are given for the number of non-isotopic multiplicative loops of order $q^{nm}-1$ that are defined using the twisted polynomial ring $K[t;σ]$ and a twisted irreducible polynomial of degree $m$, when the automorphism $σ$ has order $n$.
We show that in a weak commutative inverse property loop, such as a Bruck loop, if $α$ is a right [left] pseudoautomorphism with companion $c$, then $c$ [$c^2$] must lie in the left nucleus. In particular, for any such loop with trivial left nucleus, every right pseudoautomorphism is an automorphism and if the squaring map is a permutation, then every left pseudoautomorphism is an automorphism as well. We also show that every pseudoautomorphism of a commutative inverse property loop is an automorphism, generalizing a well-known result of Bruck.
Groups with commuting inner mappings are of nilpotency class at most two, but there exist loops with commuting inner mappings and of nilpotency class higher than two, called loops of Csörgő type. In order to obtain small loops of Csörgő type, we expand our programme from `Explicit constructions of loops with commuting inner mappings', European J. Combin. 29 (2008), 1662-1681, and analyze the following setup in groups: Let $G$ be a group, $Z\le Z(G)$, and suppose that $δ:G/Z\times G/Z\to Z$ satisfies $δ(x,x)=1$, $δ(x,y)=δ(y,x)^{-1}$, $z^{yx}δ([z,y],x) = z^{xy}δ([z,x],y)$ for every $x$, $y$, $z\…
We study conjugacy closed loops (CC-loops) and power-associative CC-loops (PACC-loops). If $Q$ is a PACC-loop with nucleus $N$, then $Q/N$ is an abelian group of exponent 12; if in addition $Q$ is finite, then $|Q|$ is divisible by 16 or by 27. There are eight nonassociative PACC-loops of order 16, three of which are not extra loops. There are eight nonassociative PACC-loops of order 27, four of which have the automorphic inverse property. We also study some special elements in loops, such as Moufang elements, weak inverse property (WIP) elements, and extra elements. In a CC-loop, the set of W…
Starting with a finite-dimensional complex Lie algebra, we extend scalars using suitable commutative topological algebras. We study Birkhoff decompositions for the corresponding loop groups. Some results remain valid for loop groups with valued in complex Banach-Lie groups.
A Jordan loop is a commutative loop satisfying the Jordan identity $(x^2 y) x = x^2 (y x)$. We establish several identities involving powers in Jordan loops and show that there is no nonassociative Jordan loop of order $9$.
We enumerate three classes of non-medial quasigroups of order $243=3^5$ up to isomorphism. There are $17004$ non-medial trimedial quasigroups of order $243$ (extending the work of Kepka, Bénéteau and Lacaze), $92$ non-medial distributive quasigroups of order $243$ (extending the work of Kepka and Němec), and $6$ non-medial distributive Mendelsohn quasigroups of order $243$ (extending the work of Donovan, Griggs, McCourt, Opršal and Stanovský). The enumeration technique is based on affine representations over commutative Moufang loops, on properties of automorphism groups of commutative Moufang…
We classify Moufang loops of order 64 and 81 up to isomorphism, using a linear algebraic approach to central loop extensions. In addition to the 267 groups of order 64, there are 4262 nonassociative Moufang loops of order 64. In addition to the $15$ groups of order $81$, there are $5$ nonassociative Moufang loops of order $81$, $2$ of which are commutative.
A loop $(Q,\cdot,\backslash,/)$ is called a middle Bol loop if it obeys the identity $x(yz\backslash x)=(x/z)(y\backslash x)$. To every right (left) Bol loop corresponds a middle Bol loop via an isostrophism. In this paper, the structure of the holomorph of a middle Bol loop is explored. For some special types of automorphisms, the holomorph of a commutative loop is shown to be a commutative middle Bol loop if and only if the loop is a middle Bol loop and its automorphism group is abelian and a subgroup of both the group of middle regular mappings and the right multiplication group. It was fou…
We say that a loop is unbreakable when it does not have nontrivial subloops. While the cyclic groups of prime order are the only unbreakable finite groups, we show that nonassociative unbreakable loops exist for every order n >= 5. We describe two families of commutative unbreakable loops of odd order, n >= 7, one where the loop's multiplication group is isomorphic to the alternating group An and another where the multiplication group is isomorphic to the symmetric group Sn. We also prove for each even n >= 6 that there exist unbreakable loops of order n whose multiplication group is isomorphi…
A loop $(X,\circ)$ is said to be a Bruck loop if it satisfies the (right) Bol identity $((z\circ x)\circ y)\circ x = z\circ ((x\circ y)\circ x)$ and the automorphic inverse property $(x\circ y)^{-1}=x^{-1}\circ y^{-1}$. If $X$ is a finite Bruck loop and $G$ is the group generated by all right translations $R(x): y\mapsto y\circ x$, then we show that $X$ and $G$ are central products $X = O^{2'}(X) * O(X)$ and $G = O^{2'}(G) * O(G)$, where $O^{2'}(X)$ ($O^{2'}(G)$) is the subloop (subgroup) generated by all 2-elements, and $O(X)$ ($O(G)$) is the largest normal subloop (subgroup) of odd order. In…
A commutative loop is Jordan if it satisfies the identity $x^2 (y x) = (x^2 y) x$. Using an amalgam construction and its generalizations, we prove that a nonassociative Jordan loop of order $n$ exists if and only if $n\geq 6$ and $n\neq 9$. We also consider whether powers of elements in Jordan loops are well-defined, and we construct an infinite family of finite simple nonassociative Jordan loops.
We consider a generalization of (pro)algebraic loops defined on general categories of algebras and the dual notion of a coloop bialgebra suitable to represent them as functors. Our main result is the proof that the natural loop of formal diffeomorphisms with associative coefficients is proalgebraic, and give a full description of the codivisions on its coloop bialgebra. This result provides a generalization of the Lagrange inversion formula to series with non-commutative coefficients, and a loop-theoretic explanation to the existence of the non-commutative F{à}a di Bruno Hopf algebra. We define spherical diffraction measures for a wide class of weighted point sets in commutative spaces, i.e. proper homogeneous spaces associated with Gelfand pairs. In the case of the hyperbolic plane we can interpret the spherical diffraction measure as the Mellin transform of the auto-correlation distribution. We show that uniform regular model sets in commutative spaces have a pure point spherical diffraction measure. The atoms of this measure are located at the spherical automorphic spectrum of the underlying lattice, and the diffraction coefficients can be characterized abstractly in ter…
On the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}$ in a real Hilbert space $\mathbf{H}$, we derive a binary operation $\odot$ such that $(\mathbb{S},\odot)$ is a power-associative Kikkawa left loop with two-sided identity $\mathbf{e}_0$, i.e., it has the left inverse, automorphic inverse, and $A_l$ properties. The operation $\odot$ is compatible with the symmetric space structure of $\mathbb{S}$. $(\mathbb{S},\odot)$ is not a loop, and the right translations which fail to be injective are easily characterized. $(\mathbb{S},\odot)$ satisfies the left power alternative and left Bol identities ``almost everywhere''…
