A loop $(X,\circ)$ is said to be a Bruck loop if it satisfies the (right) Bol identity $((z\circ x)\circ y)\circ x = z\circ ((x\circ y)\circ x)$ and the automorphic inverse property $(x\circ y)^{-1}=x^{-1}\circ y^{-1}$. If $X$ is a finite Bruck loop and $G$ is the group generated by all right translations $R(x): y\mapsto y\circ x$, then we show that $X$ and $G$ are central products $X = O^{2'}(X) * O(X)$ and $G = O^{2'}(G) * O(G)$, where $O^{2'}(X)$ ($O^{2'}(G)$) is the subloop (subgroup) generated by all 2-elements, and $O(X)$ ($O(G)$) is the largest normal subloop (subgroup) of odd order. In particular, if $X$ is solvable, then these central products are direct products. We also give a set of necessary conditions that must hold for a finite Bruck loop $X$ to be nonsolvable but have each proper section solvable; in particular, $X$ must be simple and consist of 2-elements, while the quotient of $G$ by its largest normal 2-subgroup must be isomorphic to $PGL_2(q)$, with $q=2^n+1\geq 5$.
Let $p>q$ be odd primes. We classify Bol loops and Bruck loops of order $pq$ up to isotopism. When $q$ does not divide $p^2-1$, the only Bol loop (and hence the only Bruck loop) of order $pq$ is the cyclic group of order $pq$. When $q$ divides $p^2-1$, there are precisely $\lfloor(p-1+4q)(2q)^{-1}\rfloor$ Bol loops of order $pq$ up to isotopism, including a unique nonassociative Bruck loop of order $pq$.
We continue the work by Aschbacher, Kinyon and Phillips [AKP] as well as of Glauberman [Glaub1,2] by describing the structure of the finite Bruck loops. We show essentially that a finite Bruck loop $X$ is the direct product of a Bruck loop of odd order with either a soluble Bruck loop of 2-power order or a product of loops related to the groups $PSL_2(q)$, $q= 9$ or $q \geq 5$ a Fermat prime. The latter possibillity does occur as is shown in [Nag1, BS]. As corollaries we obtain versions of Sylow's, Lagrange's and Hall's Theorems for loops.
There is a one-to-one correspondence between involutory latin quandles and uniquely $2$-divisible Bruck loops. Bruck loops of odd prime power order are centrally nilpotent. Using linear-algebraic approach to central extensions, we enumerate Bruck loops (and hence involutory latin quandles) of order $3^k$ for $k\le 5$, except for those loops that are central extensions of the cyclic group of order $3$ by the elementary abelian group of order $3^4$. Among the constructed loops there is a Bruck loop of order $3^5$ whose associated $Γ$-loop is not a commutative automorphic loop. We independently e…
As announced in [arXiv:0908.2596], we show that the non-passive finite simple groups are among the $PSL_2(q)$ with $q-1 \ge 4$ a 2-power. [arXiv:0908.2596]: Baumeister,Stein,Stroth: On Bruck Loops of 2-power Exponent
We show that in a weak commutative inverse property loop, such as a Bruck loop, if $α$ is a right [left] pseudoautomorphism with companion $c$, then $c$ [$c^2$] must lie in the left nucleus. In particular, for any such loop with trivial left nucleus, every right pseudoautomorphism is an automorphism and if the squaring map is a permutation, then every left pseudoautomorphism is an automorphism as well. We also show that every pseudoautomorphism of a commutative inverse property loop is an automorphism, generalizing a well-known result of Bruck.
We define a new variety of loops we call $Γ$-loops. After showing $Γ$-loops are power associative, our main goal will be showing a categorical isomorphism between Bruck loops of odd order and $Γ$-loops of odd order. Once this has been established, we can use the well known structure of Bruck loops of odd order to derive the Odd Order, Lagrange and Cauchy Theorems for $Γ$-loops of odd order, as well as the nontriviality of the center of finite $Γ$-$p$-loops ($p$ odd). Finally, we answer a question posed by Jedlička, Kinyon and Vojtěchovský about the existence of Hall $π$-subloops and Sylow $p$-…
The goal of this paper is two-fold. First we provide the information needed to study Bol, $A_r$ or Bruck loops by applying group theoretic methods. This information is used in this paper as well as in [BS3] and in [S]. Moreover, we determine the groups associated to Bruck loops of 2-power exponent under the assumption that every nonabelian simple group $S$ is either passive or isomorphic to $\PSL_2(q)$, $q-1 \ge 4$ a $2$-power. In a separate paper it is proven that indeed every nonabelian simple group $S$ is either passive or isomorphic to $\PSL_2(q)$, $q-1 \ge 4$ a $2$-power [S]. The results …
Right Bol loops are loops satisfying the identity $((zx)y)x = z((xy)x)$, and right Bruck loops are right Bol loops satisfying the identity $(xy)^{-1} = x^{-1}y^{-1}$. Let $p$ and $q$ be odd primes such that $p>q$. Advancing the research program of Niederreiter and Robinson from $1981$, we classify right Bol loops of order $pq$. When $q$ does not divide $p^2-1$, the only right Bol loop of order $pq$ is the cyclic group of order $pq$. When $q$ divides $p^2-1$, there are precisely $(p-q+4)/2$ right Bol loops of order $pq$ up to isomorphism, including a unique nonassociative right Bruck loop $B_{p…
Although any finite Bol loop of odd prime exponent is solvable, we show there exist such Bol loops with trivial center. We also construct finitely generated, infinite, simple Bruck loops of odd prime exponent for sufficiently large primes. This shows that the Burnside problem for Bruck loops has a negative answer.
Using the relations between the theory of differentiable Bol loops and the theory of affine symmetric spaces we classify all connected differentiable Bol loops having an at most $9$-dimensional semi-simple Lie group as the group topologically generated by their left translations. We show that all these Bol loops are isotopic to direct products of Bruck loops of hyperbolic type or to Scheerer extensions of Lie groups by Bruck loops of hyperbolic type.
We study the commuting graph on elements of odd prime order in finite simple groups. The results are used in a forthcoming paper describing the structure of Bruck loops and Bol loops of exponent 2.
Automorphic loops are loops in which all inner mappings are automorphisms. This variety of loops includes, for instance, groups and commutative Moufang loops. We study uniquely 2-divisible automorphic loops, particularly automorphic loops of odd order, from the point of view of the associated Bruck loops (motivated by Glauberman's work on uniquely 2-divisible Moufang loops) and the associated Lie rings (motivated by a construction of Wright). We prove that every automorphic loop $Q$ of odd order is solvable, contains an element of order $p$ for every prime $p$ dividing $|Q|$, and $|S|$ divides…
We show that each half-automorphism of a finite automorphic Moufang loop is trivial. In general this is not true for finite left automorphic Moufang loops and for finite automorphic loops.
Non-associative finite invertible loops (NAFIL) are loops whose every element has a unique two-sided inverse. Not much is known about the class of NAFIL loops which includes the familiar IP (Inverse Property), Moufang, and Bol loops. Our studies have shown that they are involved in such diverse fields as combinatorics, finite geometries, quasigroups and related systems, Cayley algebras, as well as in theoretical physics. This paper presents and introductions to the class of NAFIL loops as the starting point for the development of the theory of these interesting structures.
The NAFIL is a finite loop in which every element has a unique (two-sided)inverse. NAFIL loops can be classified into two types: composite (with at least one non-trivial subsystem) and non-composite or plain (without any non-trivial subsystem). This paper deals with the structure of these loops. In particular we shall introduce an important class of composite NAFIL loops called block products.
In this paper we give an infinite class of finite simple right Bol loops of exponent 2. The right multiplication group of these loops is an extension of an elementary Abelian 2-group by $S_5$. The construction uses the description of the structure of such loops given by M. Aschbacher. These results answer some questions of M. Aschbacher.
Moufang loops are one of the best-known generalizations of groups. There is only one countable family of nonassociative finite simple Moufang loops, arising from the split octonion algebras. We prove that every member of this family is generated by three elements, using the classical results on generators of unimodular groups.
We present an elementary proof that the nonassociative simple Moufang loops over finite prime fields are generated by three elements. In the last section, we conclude that integral Cayley numbers of unit norm are generated multiplicatively by three elements.
$p$-Adic compactifications of geometric loop and diffeomorphism groups of compact manifolds on finite-dimensional spaces over non-Archimedean fields are investigated. Weakened topology is introduced. The structure of newly constructed compact groups is studied. Representations of such profinite groups are discused.
We prove that a normal subloop $X$ of a Moufang loop $Q$ induces an abelian congruence of $Q$ if and only if each inner mapping of $Q$ restricts to an automorphism of $X$ and $u(xy) = (uy)x$ for all $x,y\in X$ and $u\in Q$. The former condition can be omitted when $X$ is $3$-divisible. This characterization is then used to show that classically solvable finite $3$-divisible Moufang loops are congruence solvable.
We prove that every finite, commutative automorphic loop is solvable. We also prove that every finite, automorphic 2-loop is solvable. The main idea of the proof is to associate a simple Lie algebra of characteristic 2 to a hypothetical finite simple commutative automorphic loop. The "crust of a thin sandwich" theorem of Zel'manov and Kostrikin leads to a contradiction.
For most (and possibly all) non-associative finite simple Moufang loops, three generators of order 3 can be chosen so that each two of them generate a group isomorphic to $(3, 3 | 3, p)$. The subgroup structure of $(3, 3 | 3, p)$ depends on the solvability of a certain quadratic congruence, and it is described here in terms of generators.
The Sylow theorems hold for finite extra loops, as does P. Hall's theorem for finite solvable extra loops. Every finite nonassociative extra loop $Q$ has a nontrivial center, $Z(Q)$. Furthermore, $Q/Z(Q)$ is a group whenever $|Q| < 512$. Loop extensions are used to construct an infinite nonassociative extra loop with a trivial center and a nonassociative extra loop $Q$ of order 512 such that $Q/Z(Q)$ is nonassociative. There are exactly 16 nonassociative extra loops of order $16p$ for each odd prime $p$.
We prove that the class of all loops with the inverse property (IP loops) has the Finite Embedding Property (FEP). As a consequence, every group is locally embeddable into finite IP loops.
We prove that Bi-Zassenhaus loop algebras are finitely presented up to central and second central elements. In particular, we show an explicit finite presentation for a Lie algebra whose quotient over its second centre is isomorphic to a Bi-Zassenhaus loop algebra.
We describe the structure of the algebraic group of automorphisms of all simple finite dimensional Lie superalgebras. Using this and étale cohomology considerations, we list all different isomorphism classes of the corresponding twisted loop superalgebras.
The existence of finite simple non-Moufang Bol loops was considered as one of the main open problems in the theory of loops and quasigroups. In this paper, we present a class of proper simple Bol loops. This class also contains finite and new infinite simple proper Bol loops.
In this paper we construct faithful representations of saturated fusion systems over discrete p-toral groups and use them to find conditions that guarantee the existence of unitary embeddings of p-local compact groups. These conditions hold for the Clark-Ewing and Aguadé-Zabrodsky p-compact groups as well as some exotic 3-local compact groups. We also show the existence of unitary embeddings of finite loop spaces.
