The emphasis of this course is on pluripotential methods in complex dynamics in higher dimension. They are based on the compactness properties of plurisubharmonic functions and on the theory of positive closed currents. Applications of these methods are not limited to the dynamical systems that we consider here. We choose to show their effectiveness and to describe the theory for two large families of maps. The first chapter deals with holomorphic endomorphisms of the projective space P^k. We establish the first properties and give several constructions for the Green currents and the equilibrium measure μ. The emphasis is on quantitative properties and speed of convergence. We then treat equidistribution problems and establish ergodic properties of μ: K-mixing, exponential decay of correlations for various classes of observables, central limit theorem and large deviations theorem. Finally, we study the entropy, the Lyapounov exponents and the dimension of μ. The second chapter develops the theory of polynomial-like maps in higher dimension. We introduce the dynamical degrees and construct the equilibrium measure μof maximal entropy. Then, under a natural assumption, we prove equidistribution properties of points and various statistical properties of the measure μ. The assumption is stable under small pertubations on the map. We also study the dimension of μ, the Lyapounov exponents and their variation. Our aim is to get a self-contained text that requires only a minimal background. In order to help the reader, an appendix gives the basics on p.s.h. functions, positive closed currents and super-potentials on projective spaces. Some exercises are proposed and an extensive bibliography is given.
We consider a meromorphic family of endomorphisms of degree at least 2 of a complex projective space that is parameterized by the unit disk.We prove that the measure of maximal entropy of these endomorphisms converges to the equilibrium measure of the associated non-Archimedean dynamical system when the system degenerates. The convergence holdsin the hybrid space constructed by Berkovich and further studied by Boucksom and Jonsson. We also infer from our analysis an estimate for the blow-up of the Lyapunov exponent near a pole in one-dimensional families of endomorphisms.
It is expected that a totally invariant divisor of a non-isomorphic endomorphism of the complex projective space is a union of hyperplanes. In this paper, we compute an upper bound for the degree of such a divisor. As a consequence, we prove the linearity of totally invariant divisors with isolated singularities.
Let $X$ be a projective variety admitting a polarized (or more generally, int-amplified) endomorphism. We show: there are only finitely many contractible extremal rays; and when $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial normal, every minimal model program is equivariant relative to the monoid $SEnd(X)$ of all surjective endomorphisms, up to finite index. Further, when $X$ is rationally connected and smooth, we show: there is a finite-index submonoid $G$ of $SEnd(X)$ such that $G$ acts via pullback as diagonal (and hence commutative) matrices on the Neron-Severi group; the full automorphisms group $Aut(X)$…
Let $X$ be a normal projective variety. A surjective endomorphism $f:X\to X$ is int-amplified if $f^\ast L - L =H$ for some ample Cartier divisors $L$ and $H$. This is a generalization of the so-called polarized endomorphism which requires that $f^*H\sim qH$ for some ample Cartier divisor $H$ and $q>1$. We show that this generalization keeps all nice properties of the polarized case in terms of the singularity, canonical divisor, and equivariant minimal model program.
Let $f$ be an endomorphism of the projective line. There is a natural conjugation action on the space of such morphisms by elements of the projective linear group. The group of automorphisms, or stabilizer group, of a given $f$ for this action is known to be a finite group. We determine explicit families that parameterize all endomorphisms defined over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ of degree $3$ and degree $4$ that have a nontrivial automorphism, the \textit{automorphism locus} of the moduli space of dynamical systems. We analyze the geometry of these loci in the appropriate moduli space of dynamical sys…
Let $X$ be a normal projective variety admitting a polarized or int-amplified endomorphism $f$. We list up characteristic properties of such an endomorphism and classify such a variety from the aspects of its singularity, anti-canonical divisor and Kodaira dimension. Then we run the equivariant minimal model program with respect to not just the single $f$ but also the monoid $SEnd(X)$ of all surjective endomorphisms of $X$, up to finite-index. Several applications are given. We also give both algebraic and geometric characterizations of toric varieties via polarized endomorphisms.
We define an "ample canonical height" for an endomorphism on a projective variety, which is essentially a generalization of the canonical heights for polarized endomorphisms introduced by Call--Silverman. We formulate a dynamical analogue of the Northcott finiteness theorem for ample canonical heights as a conjecture, and prove it for endomorphisms on varieties of small Picard numbers, abelian varieties, and surfaces. As applications, for the endomorphisms which satisfy the conjecture, we show the non-density of the set of preperiodic points over a fixed number field, and obtain a dynamical Mo…
We consider the potential density of rational points on an algebraic variety defined over a number field $K$, i.e., the property that the set of rational points of $X$ becomes Zariski dense after a finite field extension of $K$. For a non-uniruled projective variety with an int-amplified endomorphism, we show that it always satisfies potential density. When a rationally connected variety admits an int-amplified endomorphism, we prove that there exists some rational curve with a Zariski dense forward orbit, assuming the Zariski dense orbit conjecture in lower dimensions. As an application, we p…
Let $f \colon X \to X$ be a surjective endomorphism of a normal projective surface. When $\operatorname{deg} f \geq 2$, applying an (iteration of) $f$-equivariant minimal model program (EMMP), we determine the geometric structure of $X$. Using this, we extend the second author's result to singular surfaces to the extent that either $X$ has an $f$-invariant non-constant rational function, or $f$ has infinitely many Zariski-dense forward orbits; this result is also extended to Adelic topology (which is finer than Zariski topology).
In this paper we prove the following theorem. Let $f$ be a dominant endomorphism of a smooth projective surface over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. If there is no nonconstant invariant rational function under $f$, then there exists a closed point whose orbit under $f$ is Zariski dense. This result gives us a positive answer to the Zariski dense orbit conjecture proposed by Medvedev and Scanlon, by Amerik, Bogomolov and Rovinsky, and by Zhang, for endomorphisms of smooth projective surfaces. Moreover, we define a new canonical topology on varieties over an algebraically cl…
There is a natural conjugation action on the set of endomorphism of $¶^N$ of fixed degree $d \geq 2$. The quotient by this action forms the moduli of degree $d$ endomorphisms of $¶^N$, denoted $\mathcal{M}_d^N$. We construct invariant functions on this moduli space coming from to set of multiplier matrices of the periodic points. The basic properties of these functions are demonstrated such as that they are in the ring of regular functions of $\mathcal{M}_d^N$, methods of computing them, as well as the existence of relations. The main part of the article examines to what extend these invariant…
An endomorphism $f$ of a projective variety X is polarized (resp. quasi-polarized) if $f^*H$ is linearly equivalent to $qH$ for some ample (resp. nef and big) Cartier divisor $H$ and integer $q > 1$. First, we use cone analysis to show that a quasi-polarized endomorphism is always polarized, and the polarized property descends via any equivariant dominant rational map. Next, we show that a suitable maximal rationally connected fibration (MRC) can be made $f$-equivariant using a construction of N. Nakayama, that $f$ descends to a polarized endomorphism of the base Y of this MRC and that this Y …
Let $X$ be a projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic $p \ge 0$. A surjective endomorphism $f$ of $X$ is $q$-polarized if $f^\ast H \sim qH$ for some ample Cartier divisor $H$ and integer $q > 1$. Suppose $f$ is separable and $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein and normal. We show that the anti-canonical divisor $-K_X$ is numerically equivalent to an effective $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier divisor, strengthening slightly the conclusion of Boucksom, de Fernex and Favre (Theorem C) and also covering singular varieties over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary…
Let $X$ be a normal compact Kähler space of dimension $n$. A surjective endomorphism $f$ of such $X$ is int-amplified if $f^*ξ-ξ=η$ for some Kähler classes $ξ$ and $η$. First, we show that this definition generalizes the notion in the projective setting. Second, we prove that for the cases of $X$ being smooth, a surface or a threefold with mild singularities, if $X$ admits an int-amplified endomorphism with pseudo-effective canonical divisor, then it is a $Q$-torus. Finally, we consider a normal compact Kähler threefold $Y$ with only terminal singularities and show that, replacing $f$ by a pos…
We study the dynamics of the map endomorphism of N-dimensional projective space defined by f(X)=AX^d, where A is a matrix and d is at least 2. When d>N^2+N+1, we show that the critical height of such a morphism is comparable to its height in moduli space, confirming a case of a natural generalization of a conjecture of Silverman.
We study the algbraic dynamics for endomorphisms of projective spaces with coefficients in a p-adic field whose reduction in positive characteritic is the Frobenius. In particular, we prove a version of the dynamical Manin-Mumford conjecture and the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture for the coherent backward orbits for such endomorphisms. We also give a new proof of a dynamical version of the Tate-Voloch conjecture in this case. Our method is based on the theory of perfectoid spaces introduced by P. Scholze. In the appendix, we prove that under some technical condition on the field of definiti…
Chebyshev polynomials in one variable are typical chaotic maps on the complex 1-space. Chebyshev endomorphisms f on the complex n-space A are also chaotic. The endomorphisms f induce mappings on the quotient space A/G, where G is the dihedral group of order 2(n+1). Using invariant theory we embed A/G as an affine subvariety X in the complex m-space. Then we have morphisms g on X. We study the chaotic properties of g when n = 2 and 3.
Given a surjective endomorphism $f: X \to X$ on a projective variety over a number field, one can define the arithmetic degree $α_f(x)$ of $f$ at a point $x$ in $X$. The Kawaguchi - Silverman Conjecture (KSC) predicts that any forward $f$-orbit of a point $x$ in $X$ at which the arithmetic degree $α_f(x)$ is strictly smaller than the first dynamical degree $δ_f$ of $f$ is not Zariski dense. We extend the KSC to sAND (= small Arithmetic Non-Density) Conjecture that the locus $Z_f(d)$ of all points of small arithmetic degree is not Zariski dense, and verify this sAND Conjecture for endomorphisms…
Call and Silverman introduced the canonical height associated to a polarized dynamical system, that is, an endomorphism of a projective variety and an ample line bundle which pulls back to a tensor power of itself. They also presented an asymptotic for the variation of this height in a family over a one-dimensional base in terms of the height on the generic fibre and the height of the parameter. Here we improve this asymptotic, saving a power in the error term. As a corollary, we give an explicit bound on the height of parameters at which the dynamical system specialized to a finite orbit, in …
