We characterize nonforking (Morley) sequences in dependent theories in terms of a generalization of Poizat's special sequences and show that average types of Morley sequences are stationary over their domains. We characterize generically stable types in terms of the structure of the "eventual" type. We then study basic properties of "strict Morley sequences", based on Shelah's notion of strict nonforking. In particular we prove "Kim's lemma" for such sequences, and a weak version of local character.
In light of a gap found by Krupiński, we give a new proof of associativity for the Morley (or "nonforking") product of invariant measures in NIP theories.
We present a new proof of the existence of Morley sequences in simple theories. We avoid using the Erdős-Rado theorem and instead use only Ramsey's theorem and compactness. The proof shows that the basic theory of forking in simple theories can be developed using only principles from "ordinary mathematics", answering a question of Grossberg, Iovino and Lessmann, as well as a question of Baldwin.
We prove several results on the behavior of Kim-independence upon changing the base in NSOP$_{1}$ theories. As a consequence, we prove that Kim-independence satisfies transitivity and that this characterizes NSOP$_{1}$. Moreover, we characterize witnesses to Kim-dividing as exactly the $\ind^{K}$-Morley sequences. We give several applications, answering a number of open questions concerning transitivity, Morley sequences, and local character in NSOP$_{1}$ theories.
We investigate the notions of strict independence and strict non-forking, and establish basic properties and connections between the two. In particular it follows from our investigation that in resilient theories strict non-forking is symmetric. Based on this study, we develop notions of weight which characterize NTP2, dependence and strong dependence. Many of our proofs rely on careful analysis of sequences that witness dividing. We prove simple characterizations of such sequences in resilient theories, as well as of Morley sequences which are witnesses. As a by-product we obtain information …
We show that in a stable first-order theory, the failure of higher-dimensional type amalgamation can always be witnessed by algebraic structures which we call n-ary polygroupoids. This generalizes a result of Hrushovski that failures of 4-amalgamation in stable theories are witnessed by definable groupoids (which are 2-ary polygroupoids in our terminology). The n-ary polygroupoids are definable in a mild expansion of the language (adding a unary predicate for an infinite Morley sequence).
We study asymmetric regular types. If $\frak p$ is regular and $A$-asymmetric then there exists a strict order such that Morley sequences in $\frak p$ over $A$ are strictly increasing (we allow Morley sequences to be indexed by elements of a linear order). We prove that for all $M\supseteq A$ maximal Morley sequences in $\frak p$ over $A$ consisting of elements of $M$ have the same (linear) order type, denoted by $\Inv_{\frak p,A}(M)$, which does not depend on the particular choice of the order witnessing the asymmetric regularity. In the countable case we determine all possibilities for $\Inv…
We introduce a family of local ranks DQ depending on a finite set Q of pairs of the form (φ(x,y),q(y)) where φ(x,y) is a formula and q(y) is a global type. We prove that in any NSOP1 theory these ranks satisfy some desirable properties; in particular, DQ(x=x)<ωfor any finite variable x and any Q, if q\supseteq p is a Kim-forking extension of types, then DQ(q)<DQ(p) for some Q, and if q\supseteq p is a Kim-non-forking extension, then DQ(q)=DQ(p) for every Q that involves only invariant types whose Morley powers are \ind^K-stationary. We give natural examples of families of invariant types satis…
We develop the machinery of indiscernible subspaces in continuous theories of expansions of Banach spaces, showing that any such theory has an indiscernible subspace and therefore an indiscernible set. We extend a result of Shelah and Usvyatsov by showing that a sequence of realizations of a (possibly unstable) minimal wide type $p$ is a Morley sequence in $p$ if and only if it is the orthonormal basis of an indiscernible subspace in $p$. We also give an example showing that minimal wide types do not generally have type-definable indiscernible subspaces (answering a question of Shelah and Usvy…
In this short note we show that if we add predicate for a dense complete indiscernible sequence in a dependent theory then the result is still dependent. This answers a question of Baldwin and Benedikt and implies that every unstable dependent theory has a dependent expansion interpreting linear order.
We present distributions of countable models and correspondent structural characteristics of complete theories with continuum many types: for prime models over finite sets relative to Rudin-Keisler preorders, for limit models over types and over sequences of types, and for other countable models of theory.
We further investigate the class of models of a strongly dependent (first order complete) theory T, continuing math.LO/0406440. If |A|+|T|<= mu, I subseteq C, |I| >=beth_{|T|^+}(mu) then some J subseteq I of cardinality mu^+ is an indiscernible sequence over A .
We generalize the Unstable Formula Theorem characterization of stable theories from \citep{sh78}: that a theory $T$ is stable just in case any infinite indiscernible sequence in a model of $T$ is an indiscernible set. We use a generalized form of indiscernibles from \citep{sh78}: in our notation, a sequence of parameters from an $L$-structure $M$, $(b_i : i \in I)$, indexed by an $L'$-structure $I$ is \emph{$L'$-generalized indiscernible in $M$} if qftp$^{L'}(\ov{i};I)$=qftp$^{L'}(\ov{j};I)$ implies tp$^L(\ov{b}_{\ov{i}}; M)$ = tp$^L(\ov{b}_{\ov{j}};M)$ for all same-length, finite $\ov{i}, \ov…
This paper is a modified chapter of the author's Ph.D. thesis. We introduce the notions of sequentially approximated types and sequentially approximated Keisler measures. As the names imply, these are types which can be approximated by a sequence of realized types and measures which can be approximated by a sequence of `averaging measures' on tuples of realized types. We show that both generically stable types (in arbitrary theories) and Keisler measures which are finitely satisfiable over a countable model (in NIP theories) are sequentially approximated. We also introduce the notion of a smoo…
We investigate the behaviour of concepts from dependent theories when applied to real closed fields. Our main focus is on the concept of perpendicular indiscernible sequences, a concept first introduced in section 4 of math.LO/0009056 . This is essentially the MSc. thesis of the first author written under he guidance of the second author.
In this paper, using definability of types over indiscernible sequences as a template, we study a property of formulas and theories called "uniform definability of types over finite sets" (UDTFS). We explore UDTFS and show how it relates to well-known properties in model theory. We recall that stable theories and weakly o-minimal theories have UDTFS and UDTFS implies dependence. We then show that all dp-minimal theories have UDTFS.
A dependent theory is a (first order complete theory) T which does not have the independence property. A main result here is: if we expand a model of T by the traces on it of sets definable in a bigger model then we preserve its being dependent. Another one justifies the cofinality restriction in the theorem (from a previous work) saying that pairwise perpendicular indiscernible sequences, can have arbitrary dual-cofinalities in some models containing them.
We study a class of first-order theories whose complete quantifier-free types with one free variable either have a trivial positive part or are isolated by a positive quantifier-free formula--plus a few other technical requirements. The theory of vector spaces and the theory fields are examples. We prove the amalgamation property and the existence of a model-companion. We show that the model-companion is strongly minimal. We also prove that the length of any increasing sequence of prime types is bounded, so every formula has finite Krull dimension.
We initiate a systematic study of the class of theories without the tree property of the second kind - NTP2. Most importantly, we show: the burden is "sub-multiplicative" in arbitrary theories (in particular, if a theory has TP2 then there is a formula with a single variable witnessing this); NTP2 is equivalent to the generalized Kim's lemma and to the boundedness of ist-weight; the dp-rank of a type in an arbitrary theory is witnessed by mutually indiscernible sequences of realizations of the type, after adding some parameters - so the dp-rank of a 1-type in any theory is always witnessed by …
We use the notion of collapse of generalized indiscernible sequences to classify various model theoretic dividing lines. In particular, we use collapse of n-multi-order indiscernibles to characterize op-dimension n; collapse of function-space indiscernibles (i.e. parameterized equivalence relations) to characterize rosy theories; and finally, convex equivalence relation indiscernibles to characterize NTP2 theories.
In the first part we show a counterexample to a conjecture by Shelah regarding the existence of indiscernible sequences in dependent theories (up to the first inaccessible cardinal). In the second part we discuss generic pairs, and give an example where the pair is not dependent. Then we define the notion of directionality which deals with counting the number of coheirs of a type and we give examples of the different possibilities. Then we discuss non-splintering, an interesting notion that appears in the work of Rami Grossberg, Andrés Villaveces and Monica VanDieren, and we show that it is no…
A computational flow is a pair consisting of a sequence of computational problems of a certain sort and a sequence of computational reductions among them. In this paper we will develop a theory for these computational flows and we will use it to make a sound and complete interpretation for bounded theories of arithmetic. This property helps us to decompose a first order arithmetical proof to a sequence of computational reductions by which we can extract the computational content of low complexity statements in some bounded theories of arithmetic such as $IΔ_0$, $T^k_n$, $IΔ_0+EXP$ and $PRA$. I…
