A gauge transformation provided by the three eigenfunctions of $\B^a(x) \cdot \B^b(x)$ (where $\B^a(x)$, with a=1,2,3, are the non-Abelian magnetic fields) exposes the topological configurations of the Yang-Mills fields. In particular, it gives Dirac monopoles interacting with `photons' and massless charged vector bosons. A magnetic dipole field at each monopole corresponds to infinitesimal translation of the monopole, and provides the functional measure a la collective coordinates. The grand canonical partition function of the monopole plasma is exactly equivalent to a local field theory with certain scalar fields interacting with the Yang-Mills fields. This integrates topological degrees of freedom with perturbation theory.
Monopole solutions in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory which includes spinor fields described by the nonlinear Dirac equation are obtained. It is demonstrated that the energy spectrum of such a system possesses a global minimum whose appearance is brought about solely by the nonlinear spinor fields. It is shown that the monopole solution obtained differs in principle from the 't~Hooft-Polyakov monopole in that it is topologically trivial.
Yang-Mills theory is studied in a variant of 't Hooft's maximal Abelian gauge. In this gauge magnetic monopoles arise in the Abelian magnetic field. We show, however, that the full (non-Abelian) magnetic field does not possess any monopoles, but rather strings of magnetic fluxes. We argue that these strings are the relevant infrared degrees of freedom. The properties of the magnetic strings which arise from a dilute instanton gas are investigated for the gauge group SU(2).
Scaling behavior in the moduli space of monopole and dyon solutions in the Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in the asymptotically anti-de Sitter space is derived. The mass of monopoles and dyons scales with respect to their magnetic and electric charges, independent of the values of the cosmological constant and gauge coupling constant. The stable monopole and dyon solutions are approximated by solutions in the fixed anti-de Sitter spacetime. Unstable solutions can be viewed as the Bartnik-McKinnon solutions dressed with monopole and dyon solutions in the fixed anti-de Sitter space.
A supersymmetric collective coordinate expansion of the monopole solution of $N=4$ Yang-Mills theory is performed resulting in an $N=4$ supersymmetric quantum mechanics on the moduli space of monopole solutions.
A possible mechanism accounting for monopole configurations in continuum Yang-Mills theories is discussed. The presence of the gauge fixing term is taken into account.
We study the vacuum structure and dyon spectrum of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory in four dimensions, with gauge group SU(2). The theory turns out to have remarkably rich and physical properties which can nonetheless be described precisely; exact formulas can be obtained, for instance, for electron and dyon masses and the metric on the moduli space of vacua. The description involves a version of Olive-Montonen electric-magnetic duality. The ``strongly coupled'' vacuum turns out to be a weakly coupled theory of monopoles, and with a suitable perturbation confinement is described by monopole co…
Axially symmetric monopole anti-monopole dipole solutions to the second order equations of a simple SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs model featuring a quartic Skyrme-like term are constructed numerically. The effect of varying the Skyrme coupling constant on these solutions is studied in some detail.
We investigate the connection between Color Confinement and thermal Abelian monopoles populating the deconfined phase of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory, by studying how the statistical properties of the monopole ensemble change as the confinement/deconfinement temperature is approached from above. In particular we study the distribution of monopole currents with multiple wrappings in the Euclidean time direction, corresponding to two or more particle permutations, and show that multiple wrappings increase as the deconfinement temperature is approached from above, in a way compatible with a condensati…
We study the embedded QCD monopoles (``quark monopoles'') using low-lying eigenmodes of the overlap Dirac operator in zero- and finite-temperature SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. These monopoles correspond to the gauge-invariant hedgehogs in the quark-antiquark condensates. The monopoles were suggested to be agents of the chiral symmetry restoration since their cores should suppress the chiral condensate. We study numerically the scalar, axial and chirally invariant definitions of the embedded monopoles and show that the monopole densities are in fact globally anti-correlated with the …
We compute the quark-monopole potential for ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills in the large $N$ limit. We find an attractive potential that falls off as 1/L and is manifestly invariant under $g\to 1/g$. The strength of the potential is less than the quark-antiquark and monopole-antimonopole potentials.
In this short note we suggest that the singular behavior of large gauge transformations preserving the vacuum at null infinity in Yang-Mills theory implies monopoles into the bulk, as well as that the inclusion of a theta term induces a decoupling between holomorphic and anti-holomorphic currents associated to those large gauge transformations
We show that a Jackiw-Nohl-Rebbi solution, as the most general two-instanton, generates a circular loop of magnetic monopole in four-dimensional Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory.
2+1-dimensional Yang-Mills theory is reinterpreted in terms of metrics on 3-manifolds. The dual gluons are related to diffeomorphisms of the 3-manifold. Monopoles are identified with points where the Ricci tensor has triply degenerate eigenvalues. The dual gluons have the desired interaction with these monopoles. This would give a mass for the dual gluons resulting in confinement.
We present recent results on quark confinement: in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory, confinement of fundamental quarks is obtained due to the dual Meissner effect originated from non-Abelian magnetic monopoles defined in a gauge-invariant way, which is distinct from the well-known Abelian projection scenario. This is achieved by using a non-Abelian Stokes theorem for the Wilson loop operator and a new reformulation of the Yang-Mills theory.
We construct static axially symmetric solutions of SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory in the topologically trivial sector, representing gravitating monopole--antimonopole pairs, linked to the Bartnik-McKinnon solutions.
We discuss a non-minimal Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs model with uniaxial anisotropy in the group space associated with the Higgs field. We apply this theory to the problem of propagation of color and color-acoustic waves in the gravitational background related to the non-minimal regular Wu-Yang monopole.
We review some recent developments on BPS string solutions and monopole confinement in the Higgs or (color) superconducting phase of deformed N=2 and N=4 super Yang-Mills theories. In particular, the monopole magnetic fluxes are shown to be always integer linear combinations of string fluxes. Moreover, a bound for the threshold length of the string breaking is obtained. When the gauge group SU(N) is broken to Z_N, the BPS string tension satisfies the Casimir scaling law. Furthermore in the SU(3) case the string solutions are such that they allow the formation of a confining system with three m…
It is demonstrated that there are smooth Yang-Mills potentials which correspond to monopoles and vortices of one-half winding number. They are the generic configurations, in contrast to the integral winding number configurations like the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole.
A path integral description of an effective action of monopoles in Abelian projections of Yang-Mills theories is discussed and used to establish a projection independence of the effective action. A dynamic regime in which the effective dynamics may contain massive solitonic excitations is described.
We use the SU(2) 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole configuration, and its BPS version, to test the integral equations of the Yang-Mills theory. Those integral equations involve two (complex) parameters which do not appear in the differential Yang-Mills equations, and if they are considered to be arbitrary it then implies that non-abelian gauge theories (but not abelian ones) possess an infinity of integral equations. For static monopole configurations only one of those parameters is relevant. We expand the integral Yang-Mills equation in a power series of that parameter and show that the 't Hooft-Pol…
Dark sectors with Abelian gauge symmetries can interact with ordinary matter via kinetic mixing. In such scenarios, magnetic monopoles of a broken dark $U(1)$ will appear in our sector as confined milli-magnetically charged objects under ordinary electromagnetism. Halo ellipticity constraints are shown to significantly bound the strength of dark magnetic Coulomb monopole interactions. The bound monopole ground state, which in vacuum is stable and has no magnetic charge or moment, is shown to become quantum mechanically unstable in the presence of an external, ordinary magnetic field. If these …
Motivated by the correlated monopoles and vortices observed in lattice QCD, using Cho decomposition method and two successive gauge transformations which lead to the observation of configurations that include both monopoles and center vortices simultaneously, we obtain a Lagrangian density that explicitly indicates these two magnetic defects and the interaction between them.
We consider an SU(4) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory spontaneously broken to $SO(4)$ by a scalar field in the $n\times n$ representation and the unbroken algebra invariant under Cartan automorphism. We obtain that $\mathbb Z_2$ monopoles in this theory belong to different classes of $su(2)$ embeddings associated to continuous families of up to four parameters. This result generalizes the discrete families of $\mathbb Z_2$ monopoles previously known as well as it shows new classes of embeddings.
As shown by Taubes, in the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield limit the SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs model possesses smooth finite energy solutions, which do not satisfy the first order Bogomol'nyi equations. We construct numerically such a non-Bogomol'nyi solution, corresponding to a monopole-antimonopole pair, and extend the construction to finite Higgs potential.
We express the Pontryagin index in Polyakov gauge completely in terms of magnetically charged gauge fixing defects, namely magnetic monopoles, lines, and domain walls. Open lines and domain walls are topologically equivalent to monopoles, which are the genuine defects. The emergence of non-genuine magnetically charged closed domain walls can be avoided by choosing the temporal gauge field smoothly. The Pontryagin index is then exclusively determined by the magnetic monopoles.
We study the Yang-Mills-Higgs system within the framework of general relativity. In the static situation, using Bogomol'nyi type analysis, we derive a positive-definite energy functional which has a lower bound. Specializing to the gauge group $SU(2)$ and the t'Hooft-Polyakov ansatz for the gauge and Higgs fields, we seek static, spherically symmetric solutions to the coupled system of equations in both the isotropic and standard coordinate systems. In both cases, in the spontaneously broken symmetry situation, we find great simplications reducing the solutions of the coupled system to the sol…
In this series of three papers, we generalize the derivation of dual photons and monopoles by Polyakov, and Banks, Myerson and Kogut, to obtain approximative models of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. The papers take three different representations as their starting points: the representation as a BF Yang-Mills theory, the spin foam representation and the plaquette representation. The derivations are based on stationary phase approximations. In this first article, we cast 3- and 4-dimensional SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the form of a lattice BF Yang-Mills theory. In several steps, the expectation…
Z(n) monopoles are important for the understanding of Goddard-Nuyts-Olive duality when the scalar field is not in the adjoint representation. We analyze the Z(2) monopole solutions in a SU(n) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory spontaneously broken to Spin(n)/Z(2) by a scalar in the n x n representation. We construct a Z(2) monopole asymptotic form for each of the weights of the defining representation of the algebra dual to so(n).
We study the structure of the monopole configuration in U(2) non-commutative super Yang-Mills theory. Our analysis consists of two steps: solving the BPS equation and then the eigenvalue equation in the non-commutative space. Calculation to the first non-trivial order in the non-commutativity parameter theta shows that the monopole exhibits a certain non-locality. This structure is precisely the one expected from the recent predictions by the brane-configuration technique.
We show that dyon and magnetic monopole can be constructed in the gauge-independent way for the $SU(2)$ Yang--Mills theory even in the absence of the scalar field. This result is derived from the recent proposal for obtaining non-trivial topological configurations responsible for quark confinement in the Yang-Mills theory based on the Confinement-Higgs complementary relationship between the pure Yang-Mills theory and the gauge-scalar model with an adjoint scalar field of the fixed length. We discuss how such configurations have the implications for quark confinement.
A continuum of new monopole and dyon solutions in the Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space are found. They are regular everywhere and specified with their mass, and non-Abelian electric and magnetic charges. A class of monopole solutions which have no node in non-Abelian magnetic fields are shown to be stable against spherically symmetric linear perturbations.
In this paper, we show the existence of magnetic monopoles in the pure $SU(2)$ Yang--Mills theory even in absence of scalar fields when the gauge-invariant mass term is introduced. This result follows from the recent proposal for obtaining the gauge field configurations in the Yang-Mills theory from the solutions of the field equations in the "complementary" gauge-scalar model with the radial length of the scalar field being fixed. The gauge-invariant mass term is obtained through a change of variables and a gauge-independent description of the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism which neither relie…
A field theoretic description of monopole condensation in strongly coupled gauge theories is given by actions involving antisymmetric tensors B_{μν} of rank 2. We rederive the corresponding action for 4d compact QED, summing explicitly over all possible monopole configurations. Its gauge symmetries and Ward identities are discussed. Then we consider the Wilsonian RGs for Yang-Mills theories in the presence of collective fields (again tensors B_{μν}) for the field strengths F_{μν} associated to the U(1) subgroups. We show that a ``vector-like'' Ward identity for the Wilsonian action involving B…
We investigate static axially symmetric monopole and black hole solutions with magnetic charge n > 1 in Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. For vanishing and small Higgs selfcoupling, multimonopole solutions are gravitationally bound. Their mass per unit charge is lower than the mass of the n=1 monopole. For large Higgs selfcoupling only a repulsive phase exists. The static axially symmetric hairy black hole solutions possess a deformed horizon with constant surface gravity. We consider their properties in the isolated horizon framework, interpreting them as bound states of monopoles and black h…
We study the Z_N flux tubes and monopole confinement in deformed N=2* super Yang-Mills theories. In order to do that we consider an N=4 super Yang-Mills theory with an arbitrary gauge group G and add some N=2, N=1 and N=0 deformation terms. We analyze some possible vacuum solutions and phases of the theory, depending on the deformation terms which are added. In the Coulomb phase for the N=2* theory, G is broken to U(1)^r and the theory has monopole solutions. Then, by adding some deformation terms, the theory passes to the Higgs or color superconducting phase, in which G is broken to its cente…
We derive the low energy dynamics of monopoles and dyons in N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with hypermultiplets in arbitrary representations by utilizing a collective coordinate expansion. We consider the most general case that Higgs fields both in the vector multiplet and in the hypermultiplets have nonzero vacuum expectation values. The resulting theory is a supersymmetric quantum mechanics which has been obtained by a nontrivial dimensional reduction of two-dimensional (4,0) supersymmetric sigma models with potentials.
We twist the monopole equations of Seiberg and Witten and show how these equations are realized in topological Yang-Mills theory. A Floer derivative and a Morse functional are found and are used to construct a unitary transformation between the usual Floer cohomologies and those of the monopole equations. Furthermore, these equations are seen to reside in the vanishing self-dual curvature condition of an $OSp(1|2)$-bundle. Alternatively, they may be seen arising directly from a vanishing self-dual curvature condition on an $SU(2)$-bundle in which the fermions are realized as spanning the tange…
We show that the QCD vacuum (without dynamical quarks) is a dual superconductor at least in the low-energy region in the sense that monopole condensation does really occur. In fact, we derive the dual Ginzburg-Landau theory (i.e., dual Abelian Higgs model) directly from the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory by adopting the maximal Abelian gauge. The dual superconductor can be on the border between type II and type I, excluding the London limit. The masses of the dual Abelian gauge field is expressed by the Yang-Mills gauge coupling constant and the mass of the off-diagonal gluon of the original Yang-Mil…
We give an analytical solution representing circular magnetic monopole loops joining a pair of merons in the four-dimensional Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. This is achieved by solving the differential equation for the adjoint color (magnetic monopole) field in the two--meron background field within the recently developed reformulation of the Yang-Mills theory. Our analytical solution corresponds to the numerical solution found by Montero and Negele on a lattice. This result strongly suggests that a meron pair is the most relevant quark confiner in the original Yang-Mills theory, as Callan…
A version of non-Abelian monopole equations is explored through dimensional reductions, with often the addition of algebraic conditions. On zero curvature spaces, spinor related extensions of integrable systems have been generated, and certain reduced one-dimensional systems have been discussed with respect to integrability, as well as solutions found.
We review work on construction of Monopoles in higher dimensions. These are solutions to a particular class of models descending from Yang--Mills systems on even dimensional bulk, with Spheres as codimensions. The topological lower bounds on the Yang-Mills action translate to Bogomol'nyi lower bounds on the residual Yang-Mills-Higgs systems. Mostly, consideration is restricted to 8 dimensional bulk systems, but extension to the arbitrary case follows systematically. After presenting the monopoles, the corresponding dyons are also constructed. Finally, new Chern-Simons densities expressed in te…
We discuss the construction of non-Abelian black holes and globally regular monopole solutions to N=2, d=4 EYM theories. Special emphasis is put on how the attractor mechanism works for the non-Abelian black holes.
We study the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of N=2 super Yang-Mills theories. We find that the BPS equations are unchanged outside a quantum core where higher dimension contributions are expected to be important. We find two quantum generalizations of the BPS soliton. The leading higher-derivative correction to the effective action is shown not to contribute to the BPS mass formula.
In the pure Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions there exist monopole and dyon solutions. The spectrum of the solutions is discrete in asymptotically flat or de Sitter space, whereas it is continuous in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. The solutions are regular everywhere and specified with their mass, and non-Abelian electric and magnetic charges. In asymptotically anti-de Sitter space a class of monopole solutions have no node in non-Abelian magnetic fields, and are stable against spherically symmetric perturbations.
We study the existence of monopole bound states saturating the BPS bound in N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. We describe how the existence of such bound states relates to the topology of index bundles over the moduli space of BPS solutions. Using an $L^2$ index theorem, we prove the existence of certain BPS states predicted by Seiberg and Witten based on their study of the vacuum structure of N=2 Yang-Mills theories.
We have studied a modified Yang-Mills-Higgs system coupled to Einstein gravity. The modification of the Einstein-Hilbert action involves a direct coupling of the Higgs field to the scalar curvature. In this modified system we are able to write a Bogomol'nyi type condition in curved space and demonstrate that the positive static energy functional is bounded from below. We then investigate non-Abelian sperically symmetric static solutions in a similar fashion to the `t Hooft-Polyakov monopole. After reviewing previously studied monopole solutions of this type, we extend the formalism to included…
I describe how my involvement with monopoles related to the multimonopole existence proof of Taubes, and how my later work on quaternionic quantum mechanics led to the classification theorem for generalized projective group representations of Tao and Millard.
In this paper we study wrapped brane configurations that give rise to three dimensional pure Yang-Mills theory with eight supercharges. The corresponding supergravity solution is singular and it was conjectured that the singularity is removed by an enhancon mechanism. Instead, we incorporate non-perturbative gauge fields into supergravity and find a smooth solution for these configurations. Along the way we derive a non-abelian supergravity Lagrangian for type IIA on K3 and explicit formulae for the toroidal reduction of the heterotic string with non-abelian gauge fields. We proceed to analyse…
Monopoles in topologically massive gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions with a Chern-Simon mass term have been studied by Pisarski some years ago. He investigated the SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs model with an additional Chern-Simon mass term in the action. Pisarski argued that there is a monopole solution that is regular everywhere, but found that it does not possess finite action. There were no exact or numerical solutions being presented by Pisarski. Hence it is our purpose to further investigate this solution in more detail. We obtained numerical regular solutions that smoothly interpolates between …
We construct the component action and supersymmetry transformations of the $\mathcal{N} = 3$ Chern-Simons-Yang-Mills theory that flows in the infra red to the $\mathcal{N} = 3$ super conformal quiver Chern-Simons gauge theory obtained by Jafferis and Tomasiello in \cite{Jafferis:2008qz}. We then obtain classical $\frac{1}{3}$-BPS (and anti-BPS) solutions all along the RG flow. The solutions display a rich structure, for example, there is a non-trivial moduli space. Various properties of supersymmetric monopole operators in the infra red super conformal field theory, such as global charges and …
Condensation of the Abelian monopoles and the center vortices leads to confinement of color in low temperature phase of Yang-Mills theory. We stress that these topological magnetic degrees of freedom are also very important in the deconfinement regime: at the point of the deconfinement phase transition both the monopoles and the vortices are released into the thermal vacuum contributing, in particular, to the equation of state and, definitely, to transport properties of the hot gluonic medium. Thus, we argue that a novel, magnetic component plays a crucial role. On the other hand, it was demon…
Faddeev and Niemi have proposed a reformulation of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in terms of new variables, appropriate for describing the theory in its infrared limit based on the intuitive picture of colour confinement due to monopole condensation. I generalize their proposal (with some differences) to SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. The natural variables are $N-1$ mutually commuting traceless $N\times N$ Hermitian matrices, an element of the maximal torus defined by these commuting matrices, $N-1$ Abelian gauge fields for the maximal torus gauge group, and an invariant symmetric two-index tensor on the …
An efficient way of resolving Gauss' law in Yang-Mills theory is presented by starting from the projected gauge invariant partition function and integrating out one spatial field variable. In this way one obtains immediately the description in terms of unconstrained gauge invariant variables which was previously obtained by explicitly resolving Gauss' law in a modified axial gauge. In this gauge, which is a variant of 't Hooft's Abelian gauges, magnetic monopoles occur. It is shown how the Pontryagin index of the gauge field is related to the magnetic charges. It turns out that the magnetic mo…
We discuss the role of magnetic degrees of freedom in Yang-Mills plasma at temperatures above and of order of the critical temperature Tc. While at zero temperature the magnetic degrees of freedom are condensed and electric degrees of freedom are confined, at the point of the phase transition both magnetic and electric degrees of freedom are released into the thermal vacuum. This phenomenon might explain the observed unusual properties of the plasma.
The well known topological monopoles originally investigated by 't Hooft and Polyakov are known to arise in classical Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. With a pure gauge theory it is known that the classical Yang-Mills field equation do not have such finite energy configurations. Here we argue that such configurations may arise in a semi-quantized Yang-Mills theory, where the original gauge group, SU(3), is reduced to a smaller gauge group, SU(2), and with some combination of the coset fields of the SU(3) to SU(2) reduction acting as effective scalar fields. The procedure is called semi-quantized since…
Recently Anishetty, Majumdar and Sharatchandra have proposed a way of characterizing topologically non-trivial configurations for 2+1 dimensional Yang-Mills theory in a local and manifestly gauge invariant manner. In this paper paper we develop criteria to locate such objects in lattice gauge theory and find them in numerical simulations.
We investigate 't Hooft-Mandelstam monopoles in QCD in the presence of a single classical instanton configuration. The solution to the Maximal Abelian projection is found to be a circular monopole trajectory with radius $R$ centered on the instanton. At zero loop radius, there is a marginally stable (or flat) direction for loop formation to $O(R^4 logR)$. We argue that loops will form, in the semi-classical limit, due to small perturbations such as the dipole interaction between instanton anti-instanton pairs. As the instanton gas becomes a liquid, the percolation of the monopole loops may the…
