Pulsed laser deposition was employed to grow thin films of the Heusler compounds Co_2MnSi and Co_2FeSi. Epitaxial growth was realized both directly on MgO (100) and on a Cr or Fe buffer layer. Structural analysis by x-ray and electron diffraction shows for both materials the ordered L2_1 structure. Bulk magnetization was determined with a SQUID magnetometer. The values agree with the Slater-Pauling rule for half-metallic Heusler compounds. On the films grown directly on the substrate measurements of the Hall effect have been performed. The normal Hall effect is nearly temperature independent and points towards a compensated Fermi surface. The anomalous contribution is found to be dominated by skew scattering. A remarkable sign change of both normal and anomalous Hall coefficients is observed on changing the valence electron count from 29 (Mn) to 30 (Fe).
High quality ZnO thin films were gown using the pulsed laser deposition technique on (0001) Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates in an oxidizing atmosphere, using a Zn metallic target. We varied the growth conditions such as the deposition temperature and the oxygen pressure. First, using a battery of techniques such as x-rays diffraction, Rutherford Backscattering spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy, we evaluated the structural quality, the stress and the degree of epitaxy of the films. Second, the relations between the deposition conditions and the structural properties, that are directly related to …
We report on Boron diffusion and subsequent crystallization of Co$_{40}$Fe$_{40}$B$_{20}$ (CoFeB) thin films on SiO$_2$/Si(001) substrate using pulsed laser deposition. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy reveals Boron diffusion at the interface in both amorphous and crystalline phase of CoFeB. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals a small fraction of nano-crystallites embedded in the amorphous matrix of CoFeB. However, annealing at 400$^\circ$C results in crystallization of CoFe with \textit{bcc} structure along (110) orientation. As-deposited films are non-metallic in nature w…
Epitaxial (001)-, (118)-, and (104)-oriented Nd-doped Bi4Ti3O12 films have been grown by pulsed-laser deposition from a Bi4-xNdxTi3O12 (x=0.85) target on SrRuO3 coated single-crystal (100)-, (110)-, and (111)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates, respectively. X-ray diffraction illustrated a unique epitaxial relationship between film and substrate for all orientations. We observed a strong dependence of ferroelectric properties on the film orientation, with no ferroelectric activity in an (001)-oriented film; a remanent polarization, 2Pr, of 12 microC/cm2 and coercive field, Ec, of 120 kV/cm in a (118)-…
La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 is a relatively new addition in the family of colossal magnetoresistive manganites where the cerium ion is believed to be in the Ce4+ state. In this paper we report an extensive study the magnetotransport properties of laser ablated La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 films on LaAlO3 with variation in ambient oxygen pressure during growth and film thickness. We observe that the transport and magnetic properties of the film depend on the interplay between oxygen pressure, surface morphology, film thickness and epitaxial strain. The films were characterized by x-ray diffraction on a 4-circle x-ray gon…
Vacancy defects in thin film laser ablated SrTiO3 on SrTiO3 were identified using variable energy positron annihilation lifetime measurements. Strontium vacancy related defects were the dominant positron traps and, apart from in the top ~ 50 nm, were found to be uniformly distributed. The surface layer showed an increase in annihilation from larger open-volume defects, large vacancy clusters or nanovoids.
Double ring formation on Co2MnSi (CMS) films is observed at electrical breakdown voltage during local anodic oxidation (LAO) using atomic force microscope (AFM). Corona effect and segregation of cobalt in the vicinity of the rings is studied using magnetic force microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Double ring forma-tion is attributed to the interaction of ablated material with the induced magnetic field during LAO. Steepness of forward bias transport characteristics from the unperturbed region of the CMS film suggest a non equilibrium spin contribution. Such mesoscopic textures in m…
Mn$_{3-x}$Ga (x = 0.1, 0.4, 0.7) thin films on MgO and SrTiO$_3$ substrates were investigated with magnetic anisotropy perpendicular to the film plane. An anomalous Hall-effect was observed for the tetragonal distorted lattice in the crystallographic D0$_{22}$ phase. The Hall resistivity $\varrho_{xy}$ was measured in a temperature range from 20 to 330 K. The determined skew scattering and side jump coefficients are discussed with regard to the film composition and used substrate and compared to the crystallographic and magnetic properties.
Magnetite epitaxial thin films have been prepared by pulsed laser deposition at 340 C on MgO and Si substrates. One key result is that the thin film properties are almost identical to the properties of bulk material. For 40 - 50 nm thick films, the saturation magnetization and conductivity are respectively 453 emu/cm^3 and 225 1/(Ohm cm) at room temperature. The Verwey transition is at 117 K. The Hall effect indicates an electron concentration corresponding to 0.22 electrons per formula unit at room temperature. Normal and anomalous Hall effect both have a negative sign.
PdCoO$_2$, being highly conductive and anisotropic, is a promising material for fundamental and technological applications. Recently, reduced PdCoO$_2$ thin films were shown to exhibit ferromagnetism after hydrogen annealing. Here, we demonstrate that when PdCoO$_2$ film is used as a cathode for dissociation of water, hydrogen generated around the film reduces the material and leads to the emergence of anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Moreover, we demonstrate that the sign of the AHE signal can also be changed with the electrolytic process. Electrolytically-modified PdCoO$_2$ films may open a door…
Carbides stand out because of their high hardness and wear-resistance. Thus these materials are often discussed for coatings of machine tools etc. Within this work Boron Carbide (B4C) and Carbide (C) thin films were deposited on Si (100) substrates by pulsed-laser deposition technique. In order to improve the wear-resistance of the deposited films, we introduced a new working technique including the application of a second excimer laser in a special working mode. Thereby one laser was used to ablate the carbide material from a target and to deposit the material on the substrate. The light of t…
We study Hall effect in sputtered NixPt1-x thin films with different Ni concentrations. Temperature, magnetic field and angular dependencies are analyzed and the phase diagram of NiPt thin films is obtained. It is found that films with sub-critical Ni concentration exhibit cluster-glass behavior at low temperatures with a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy below the freezing temperature. Films with over-critical Ni concentration are ferromagnetic with parallel anisotropy. At the critical concentration the state of the film is strongly frustrated. Such films demonstrate canted magnetization with…
The Weyl antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn has recently attracted significant attention as it exhibits various useful functions such as large anomalous Hall effect that are normally absent in antiferromagnets. Here we report the thin film fabrication of the single phase of Mn$_3$Sn and the observation of the large anomalous Hall effect at room temperature despite its vanishingly small magnetization. Our work on the high-quality thin film growth of the Weyl antiferromagnet paves the path for developing the antiferromagnetic spintronics.
We have used the classical Hall effect to electrically characterize Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) films grown by two different techniques on silica substrates. ITO films have the unique property that they can be both electrically conducting (and to be used for a gate electrode for example) as well as optically transparent (at least in the visible part of the spectrum). In the near infrared (NIR) the transmission typically reduces. However, the light absorption can in principle be compensated by growing thinner films.
The planar Hall effect of IrMn on an yttrium iron garnet (YIG = Y3Fe5O12) was measured in the magnetic field rotating in the film plane. The magnetic field angle dependence of planar Hall resistance (PHR) has been observed in YIG/IrMn bilayer at different temperatures, while the GGG/IrMn (GGG= Gd3Ga5O12) shows constant PHR for different magnetic field angles at both 10 K and 300 K. This provides evidence that IrMn has interfacial spins which can be led by FM in YIG/IrMn structure. A hysteresis can be observed in PHR-magnetic field angle loop of YIG/IrMn films at 10 K, indicating the irreversib…
Magnetotransport is at the center of the spintronics. Mn3Sn, an antiferromagnet that has a noncollinear 120° spin order, exhibits large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) at room temperature. But such a behavior has been remained elusive in Mn3Sn films. Here we report the observation of robust AHE up to room temperature in quasi-epitaxial Mn3Sn thin films, prepared by magnetron sputtering. The growth of both (11-20)- and (0001)-oriented Mn3Sn films provides a unique opportunity for comparing AHE in three different measurement configurations. When the magnetic field is swept along (0001) plane, such a…
We report the electromotive force (EMF) properties generated in 3d-transition ferromagnetic metal (FM = Fe, Co, and Ni80Fe20) films themselves under their ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). For Fe and Co films, the EMF due to the anomalous-Hall effect is dominantly generated under their FMR. Meanwhile, for a Ni80Fe20 film, the EMF due to the inverse spin-Hall effect in the Ni80Fe20 film itself under the FMR is mainly generated. This tendency is qualitatively explained with differences of the spin polarization, the spin Hall conductivity, the anomalous Hall conductivity, the magnetization saturatio…
Large-gap quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators were previously predicted in stanene and its derivatives. Beyond stanene that is the thinnest $α$-Sn(111) film, we propose to explore QSH insulators in $α$-Sn films with different crystallographic orientations. Our first-principles calculations reveal that the thickness-dependent band gap of $α$-Sn (100) and (110) films does not show a monotonic decrease as typically expected by quantum confinement, but displays an oscillating change behavior, an indicative of topological quantum phase transition. While these films are normal insulators in the ultra…
Spin chirality in metallic materials with non-coplanar magnetic order can give rise to a Berry phase induced topological Hall effect. Here, we report the observation of a large topological Hall effect in high-quality films of Mn$_{1.5}$PtSn that were grown by means of magnetron sputtering on MgO(001). The topological Hall resistivity is present up to $μ_{0}H \approx 4~$T below the spin reorientation transition temperature, $T_{s}=185$~K. We find, that the maximum topological Hall resistivity is of comparable magnitude as the anomalous Hall resistivity. Owing to the size, the topological Hall e…
Temperature dependent magneto-transport measurements in magnetic fields of up to 12 Tesla were performed on thin film vanadium dioxide (VO2) across the metal-insulator transition (MIT). The Hall carrier density increases by 4 orders of magnitude at the MIT and accounts almost entirely for the resistance change. The Hall mobility varies little across the MIT and remains low, ~0.1cm2/V sec. Electrons are found to be the major carriers on both sides of the MIT. Small positive magnetoresistance in the semiconducting phase is measured.
Motivated by the recently observed topological Hall effect in ultra-thin films of SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) grown on SrTiO$_3$ (STO) [001] substrate, we investigate the magnetic ground state and anomalous Hall response of the SRO ultra-thin films by virtue of spin density functional theory (DFT). Our findings reveal that in the monolayer limit of an SRO film, a large energy splitting of Ru-$t_{2g}$ states stabilizes an anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) insulating magnetic ground state. For the AFM ground state, our Berry curvature calculations predict a large anomalous Hall response upon doping. From the systema…
A sensitive mid-infrared (MIR, 900-1100 cm-1, 112-136 meV) photo-elastic polarization modulation technique is used to measure simultaneously Faraday rotation and circular dichroism in thin metal films. These two quantities determine the complex AC Hall conductivity. This novel technique is applied to study Au and Cu thin films at temperatures down to 20 K and magnetic fields up to 8 T. The Hall frequency is consistent with band theory predictions. We report the first measurement of the MIR Hall scattering rate, which is significantly lower than that derived from Drude analysis of zero magnetic…
We report a detailed magnetic and structural analysis of highly reduced Co doped rutile TiO2 films displaying an anomalous Hall effect (AHE). The temperature and field dependence of magnetization, and transmission electron microscopy clearly establish the presence of nano-sized superparamagnetic cobalt clusters of 8-10 nm size in the films at the interface. The co-occurrence of superparamagnetism and AHE raises questions regarding the use of the AHE as a test of the intrinsic nature of ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors.
In this work, we present the investigation of temperature dependent hall measurement of the ultra thin VO$_2$ films grown on Si/SiO$_2$ substrate. Experimental results suggest that electrons are the predominant carrier both in the semiconducting and metallic phases. The decrease of the resistivity with increasing temperature is mainly caused by the increase in the number density of charge carriers. The temperature dependence of the carrier concentration indicates the VO$_2$ films has a band gap of 0.40$\pm$0.09 $ev$ in the semiconducting phase. Analysis of hall effect data based on a composite…
We study the anomalous Hall effect in binary alloys between the group-10 elements Ni and Pt. It is observed that the ordinary Hall effect is negative (electron-like) at any composition of the alloy. The extraordinary Hall effect is also negative except in the vicinity of the ferromagnetic quantum critical point. Close to the critical point the sign of the extraordinary Hall effect can be changed to positive (hole-like) by tuning either the temperature or the composition of the alloy. We attribute such an "anti-ordinary" Hall effect with opposite signs of the ordinary and the extraordinary cont…
The search of large-gap quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators and effective approaches to tune QSH states is important for both fundamental and practical interests. Based on first-principles calculations we find two-dimensional tin films are QSH insulators with sizable bulk gaps of 0.3 eV, sufficiently large for practical applications at room temperature. These QSH states can be effectively tuned by chemical functionalization and by external strain. The mechanism for the QSH effect in this system is band inversion at the Γpoint, similar to the case of HgTe quantum well. With surface doping of mag…
Here we report the measurement of the interfacial spin accumulation induced by the spin Hall effect in Pt and W thin films using magneto-optical Kerr microscopy. We show that the Kerr rotation has opposite sign in Pt and W and scales linearly with current density. By comparing the experimental results with ab-initio calculations of the spin Hall and magneto-optical Kerr effects, we quantitatively determine the current-induced spin accumulation at the Pt interface as $5*10^{-12} μ_B$A$^{-1}$cm$^2$ per atom. From thickness-dependent measurements, we determine the spin diffusion length in a singl…
The interplay of magnetism and spin-orbit coupling on an Fe kagome lattice in Fe3Sn2 crystal produces a unique band structure leading to an order of magnitude larger anomalous Hall effect than in conventional ferromagnetic metals. In this work, we demonstrate that Fe-Sn nanocrystalline films also exhibit a large anomalous Hall effect, being applicable to magnetic sensors that satisfy both high sensitivity and thermal stability. In the films prepared by a co-sputtering technique at room temperature, the partial development of crystalline lattice order appears as nanocrystals of Fe-Sn kagome lay…
Motivated by the recently observed unconventional Hall effect in ultra-thin films of ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) we investigate the effect of strain-induced oxygen octahedral distortion in the electronic structure and anomalous Hall response of the SRO ultra-thin films by virtue of density functional theory calculations. Our findings reveal that the ferromagnetic SRO films grown on SrTiO$_3$ (in-plane strain of $-$0.47$\%$) have an orthorhombic (both tilting and rotation) distorted structure and with an increasing amount of substrate-induced compressive strain the octahedral tilting angle is…
Reading the magnetic state of antiferromagnetic (AFM) thin films is key for AFM spintronic devices. We investigate the underlying physics behind the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) of bilayers of platinum and insulating AFM hematite (α-Fe2O3) and find an SMR efficiency of up to 0.1%, comparable to ferromagnetic based structures. To understand the observed complex SMR field dependence, we analyse the effect of misalignments of the magnetic axis that arise during growth of thin films, by electrical measurements and direct magnetic imaging, and find that a small deviation can result in signific…

Synthesis of crystallographically well-defined thin films of topological materials is important for unraveling their mesoscale quantum properties and for device applications. Mn$_3$Ge, an antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal with a chiral magnetic structure on a Kagome lattice, is expected to have enhanced Berry curvature around Weyl nodes near the Fermi energy, leading to large anomalous Hall / Nernst effects and a large spin-Hall effect. Using magnetron sputtering, we have grown epitaxial thin films of hexagonal D0$_{19}$ Mn$_3$Ge that are flat and continuous. Large anomalous Nernst and inverse …
We suggest a new type of magnetic random access memory (MRAM) that is based on the phenomenon of the planar Hall effect (PHE) in magnetic films, and we demonstrate this idea with manganite films. The PHE-MRAM is structurally simpler than currently developed MRAM that is based on magnetoresistance tunnel junctions (MTJ), with the tunnel junction structure being replaced by a single layer film.
Large spin Hall angles have been observed in 3d ferromagnets, but their origin, and especially their link with the ferromagnetic order, remain unclear. Here, we investigate the inverse spin Hall effect of Ni60Cu40 and Ni50Cu50 across their Curie temperature using spin pumping experiments. We evidence that the inverse spin Hall effect in these samples is comparable to that of platinum, and that it is insensitive to the magnetic order. These results points towards a Heisenberg localized model of the transition, and suggest that the large spin Hall effects in 3d ferromagnets can be independent of…
The spin relaxation induced by the Elliott-Yafet mechanism and the extrinsic spin Hall conductivity due to the skew-scattering are investigated in 5d transition-metal ultrathin films with self-adatom impurities as scatterers. The values of the Elliott-Yafet parameter and of the spin-flip relaxation rate reveal a correlation with each other that is in agreement with the Elliott approximation. At 10-layer thickness, the spin-flip relaxation time in 5d transition-metal films is quantitatively reported about few hundred nanoseconds at atomic percent which is one and two orders of magnitude shorter…
Topological magnetic semimetals promise large Berry curvature through the distribution of the topological Weyl nodes or nodal lines and further novel physics with exotic transport phenomena. We present a systematic study of the structural and magnetotransport properties of Co$_2$MnGa films from thin (20 nm) to bulk like behavior (80 nm), in order to understand the underlying mechanisms and the role on the topology. The magnetron sputtered Co$_2$MnGa films are $L$$2_{\mathrm {1}}$-ordered showing very good heteroepitaxy and a strain-induced tetragonal distortion. The anomalous Hall conductivity…
The crystal structures of LaAlO3 films grown by pulsed laser deposition on SrTiO3 substrates at oxygen pressure of 10-3 mbar or 10-5 mbar, where kinetics of ablated species hardly depend on oxygen background pressure, are compared. Our results show that the interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 is sharper when the oxygen pressure is lower. Over time, the formation of various crystalline phases is observed while the crystalline thickness of the LaAlO3 layer remains unchanged. X-ray scattering as well as atomic force microscopy measurements indicate three-dimensional growth of such phases, which a…
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a non-linear Hall effect appearing in magnetic conductors, boosted by internal magnetism beyond what is expected from the ordinary Hall effect. With the recent discovery of the quantized version of the AHE, the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), in Cr- or V-doped topological insulator (TI) (Sb,Bi)$_2$Te$_3$ thin films, the AHE in magnetic TIs has been attracting significant interest. However, one of the puzzles in this system has been that while Cr- or V-doped (Sb,Bi)$_2$Te$_3$ and V-doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ exhibit AHE, Cr-doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ has failed to exhib…
The three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) is a novel state of matter as characterized by two-dimensional (2D) metallic Dirac states on its surface. Bi-based chalcogenides such as Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, Sb2Te3 and their combined/mixed compounds like Bi2Se2Te and (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 are typical members of 3D-TIs which have been intensively studied in forms of bulk single crystals and thin films to verify the topological nature of the surface states. Here, we report the realization of the Quantum Hall effect (QHE) on the surface Dirac states in (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 films (x = 0.84 and 0.88). With elect…
The influence of hydrogen gas absorption by the Pd layer of bi-layered films containing Pd and Co layers on the inverse Spin Hall Effect (iSHE) in the material is measured. iSHE is driven by ferromagnetic resonance in the cobalt layer. In these conditions, the iSHE is seen as a d.c. voltage across the Pd layer. In the presence of hydrogen gas the iSHE peak shifts downwards in the applied field together with the ferromagnetic resonance absorption peak for the material. In parallel, an increase in the iSHE peak height and in its width is observed. Our analysis suggests that these observations ca…
Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$, one of the most widely studied topological insulators (TIs), is naturally electron-doped due to n-type native defects. However, many years of efforts to achieve p-type Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ thin films have failed so far. Here, we provide a solution to this long-standing problem, showing that the main culprit has been the high density of interfacial defects. By suppressing these defects through an interfacial engineering scheme, we have successfully implemented p-type Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ thin films down to the thinnest topological regime. On this platform, we present the first tunable…
We report on a systematic study of the structural, magnetic properties and the anomalous Hall effect, in the Heusler alloy Co2FeAl (CFA) epitaxial films on MgO(001), as a function of film thickness. It was found that the epitaxial CFA films show a highly ordered B2 structure with an in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. An analysis of the electrical transport properties reveals that the lattice and magnon scattering contributions to the longitudinal resistivity. Independent on the thickness of films, the anomalous Hall resistivity of CFA films is found to be dominated by skew scattering only.…
Magnetic and magneto-transport properties of manganese nitride films grown by molecular beam epitaxy have been investigated. Due to the mixed ferrimagnetic (FI) phase ($ε$-phase with TFI ~ 738 K) and the antiferromagnetic phase ($ζ$-phase with TN ~ 273 K), we observe magnetization hysteresis loops with non-zero exchange bias below TN, reaching ~ 0.22 T at 5 K. This indicates that noncollinear spins exist at the interfaces between two phases, creating a competition between interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) and exchange interactions. Strikingly, in addition to the normal Hall effect by Lore…
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of epitaxial SrRuO$_3$ films with varying lattice parameters is investigated, and analyzed according to the Berry-phase scenario. SrRuO$_3$ thin films were deposited on SrTiO$_3$ substrates directly, or using intermediate buffer layers, in order to finely control the epitaxial strain. The AHE of the different films exhibits intrinsic features such as the sign change of the Hall resistivity with the temperature, even for small thicknesses of SrRuO$_3$. However, the anomalous Hall conductivity is greatly reduced from its intrinsic value as the carrier scattering i…
Quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect is promising for achieving dissipationless transport devices due to the robust gapless states inside insulating bulk gap. Here, by using first-principles calculations, we discover group-IV chalcogenide Si2Te2 film to be a 2D QSH insulator with a fundamental band gap of 0.29 eV, which is tunable under external strain. This nontrivial topological phase stems from band inversion between the Si-px,y and Te-px,y orbitals, demonstrated by a single pair of topologically protected helical edge states with Dirac point locating in the bulk gap. Notably, the characteristic …
Laser ablation of Al-Ni alloys and Al films on Ni substrates has been studied by molecular dynamics simulations (MD). The MD method was combined with a two-temperature model to describe the interaction between the laser beam, the electrons and the atoms. The challenge for alloys and mixtures is to find the electronic parameters: electron heat conductivity, electron heat capacity and electron-phonon coupling parameter. The challenge for layered systems is to run simulations of an inhomogeneous system which requires modification of the simulation code. Ablation and laser-induced melting was stud…
Epitaxial films of the B20-structure alloy Fe$_{1-y}$Co$_y$Ge were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on Si (111) substrates. The magnetization varied smoothly from the bulk-like values of one Bohr magneton per Fe atom for FeGe to zero for non-magnetic CoGe. The chiral lattice structure leads to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and the films' helical magnetic ground state was confirmed using polarized neutron reflectometry measurements. The pitch of the spin helix, measured by this method, varies with Co content $y$ and diverges at $y \sim 0.45$. This indicates a zero-crossing of the DM…
Pt ultrathin films on ferromagnetic insulators have been widely studied for spintronics applications, and magnetic moments of interface Pt atoms were considered to be ferromagnetically ordered due to a magnetic proximity effect (MPE). An anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is usually used to examine an out-of-plane magnetic moments of the Pt layer. To tune ferromagnetic properties of an Pt ultrathin film, we fabricated electric double layer transistors on Pt thin films with thicknesses of 5.9 nm and 7.0 nm on a $\rm{CoFe_2O_4}$ (CFO) ferrimagnetic insulator. For the Pt (7.0 nm)/CFO sample, a hysteresi…
The quantum spin Hall insulators predicted ten years ago and now experimentally observed are instrumental for a breakthrough in nanoelectronics due to non-dissipative spin-polarized electron transport through their edges. For this transport to persist at normal conditions, the insulators should possess a sufficiently large band gap in a stable topological phase. Here, we theoretically show that quantum spin Hall insulators can be realized in ultra-thin films constructed from a trivial band insulator with strong spin-orbit coupling. The thinnest film with an inverted gap large enough for practi…
TmFeO$_3$ (TFO) is a canted antiferromagnet that undergoes a spin reorientation transition (SRT) with temperature between 82 K and 94 K in single crystals. In this temperature region, the Néel vector continuously rotates from the crystallographic $c$-axis (below 82 K) to the $a$-axis (above 94 K). The SRT allows for a temperature control of distinct antiferromagnetic states without the need for a magnetic field, making it apt for applications working at THz frequencies. For device applications, thin films of TFO are required as well as an electrical technique for reading out the magnetic state…
We report the evolution of crystallographic structure, magnetic ordering and electronic transport in thin films of full-Heusler alloy Co$_2$MnSi deposited on (001) MgO with annealing temperatures ($T_A$). By increasing the $T_A$ from 300$^\circ$C to 600$^\circ$C, the film goes from a disordered nanocrystalline phase to $B2$ ordered and finally to the $L2_1$ ordered alloy. The saturation magnetic moment improves with structural ordering and approaches the Slater-Pauling value of $\approx 5.0 μ_B$ per formula unit for $T_A$ = 600$^\circ$C. At this stage the films are soft magnets with coercive a…
We show, both experimentally and theoretically, a novel route to obtain giant room temperature spin Hall effect due to surface-assisted skew scattering. In the experiment, we report the spin Hall effect in Pt-doped Au films with different thicknesses $t_N$. The giant spin Hall angle $γ_S$ = $0.12 \pm 0.04$ is obtained for $t_N$ = 10 nm at room temperature, while it is much smaller for $t_N$ = 20 nm sample. Combined ab initio and quantum Monte Carlo calculations for the skew scattering due to a Pt impurity show $γ_S$ $\cong$ 0.1 on the Au (111) surface, while it is small in bulk Au. The quantum…

Group III-V films are of great importance for their potential application in spintronics and quantum computing. Search for two-dimensional III-V films with a nontrivial large-gap are quite crucial for the realization of dissipationless transport edge channels using quantum spin Hall (QSH) effects. Here we use first-principles calculations to predict a class of large-gap QSH insulators in functionalized TlSb monolayers (TlSbX2; (X = H, F, Cl, Br, I)), with sizable bulk gaps as large as 0.22~0.40 eV. The QSH state is identified by Z2 topological invariant together with helical edge states induce…
We predict spin Hall angles up to 80% for ultrathin noble metal films with substitutional Bi impurities. The colossal spin Hall effect is caused by enhancement of the spin Hall conductivity in reduced sample dimension and a strong reduction of the charge conductivity by resonant impurity scattering. These findings can be exploited to create materials with high efficiency of charge to spin current conversion by strain engineering.
The search for new large band gap quantum spin Hall (QSH) and quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators is critical for their realistic applications at room temperature. Here we predict, based on first principles calculations, that the band gap of QSH and QAH states can be as large as 1.01 eV and 0.35 eV in an H-decorated Bi(111) film. The origin of this giant band gap lies both in the large spin-orbit interaction of Bi and the H-mediated exceptional electronic and structural properties. Moreover, we find that the QAH state also possesses the properties of quantum valley Hall state, thus intrins…
A controversy arose over the interpretation of the recently observed hump features in Hall resistivity $ρ_{xy}$ from ultra-thin SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) film; it was initially interpreted to be due to topological Hall effect but was later proposed to be from existence of regions with different anomalous Hall effect (AHE). In order to settle down the issue, we performed Hall effect as well as magneto-optic Kerr-effect measurements on 4 unit cell SRO films grown on SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates. Clear hump features are observed in the measured $ρ_{xy}$, whereas neither hump feature nor double hysteresis loo…
We report the growth of noncollinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mn$_3$Ni$_{0.35}$Cu$_{0.65}$N films and the orientation-dependent anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of (001) and (111) films due to nonzero Berry curvature. We found that post-annealing at 500$^\circ$C can significantly improve the AHE signals, though using the appropriate post-annealing conditions is important. The AHE and magnetization loops show sharp flipping at the coercive field in (111) films, while (001) films are hard to saturate by a magnetic field. The anomalous Hall conductivity of (111) films is an order of magnitude larger th…
