This paper provides applications of patching to quadratic forms and central simple algebras over function fields of curves over henselian valued fields. In particular, we use a patching approach to reprove and generalize a recent result of Parimala and Suresh on the u-invariant of p-adic function fields, for p odd. The strategy relies on a local-global principle for homogeneous spaces for rational algebraic groups, combined with local computations.
We extend field patching to the setting of Berkovich analytic geometry and use it to prove a local-global principle over function fields of analytic curves. We apply this result to quadratic forms, and combine it with sufficient conditions for local isotropy over a Berkovich curve to obtain applications on the u-invariant. The patching method we adapt was introduced by Harbater and Hartmann, and further developed by these two authors and Krashen. This paper generalizes their results on the local-global principle and quadratic forms.
We introduce a notion of refinements in the context of patching, in order to obtain new results about local-global principles and field invariants in the context of quadratic forms and central simple algebras. The fields we consider are finite extensions of the fraction fields of two-dimensional complete domains that need not be local. Our results in particular give the u-invariant and period-index bound for these fields, as consequences of more general abstract results.
Let $R$ be a semilocal principal ideal domain. Two algebraic objects over $R$ in which scalar extension makes sense (e.g. quadratic spaces) are said to be of the same genus if they become isomorphic after extending scalars to all completions of $R$ and its fraction field. We prove that the number of isomorphism classes in the genus of unimodular quadratic spaces over (non necessarily commutative) $R$-orders is always a finite power of $2$, and under further assumptions, e.g. that the order is hereditary, this number is $1$. The same result is also shown for related objects, e.g. systems of ses…
A quadratic Lie algebra is a Lie algebra endowed with a symmetric, invariant and non degenerate bilinear form; such a bilinear form is called an invariant metric. The aim of this work is to describe the general structure of those central extensions of quadratic Lie algebras which in turn have invariantmetrics. The structure is such that the central extensions can be described algebraically in terms of the original quadratic Lie algebra, and geometrically in terms of the direct sum decompositions that the invariant metrics involvedgive rise to.
In a recent paper, Colliot-Thélène, Parimala and Suresh conjectured that a local-global principle holds for projective homogeneous spaces of connected linear algebraic groups over function fields of p-adic curves. In this paper, we show that the conjecture is true for a linear algebraic group whose almost simple factors of its semisimple part are isogenous to unitary groups or special unitary groups of hermitian or skew-hermitian spaces over central simple algebras with involutions. The proof implements patching techniques of Harbater, Hartmann and Krashen. As an application, we obtain a Sprin…
Solvable Lie algebras having at least one Abelian descending central ideal are studied. It is shown that all such Lie algebras can be built up from canonically defined ideals. The nature of such ideals is elucidated and their construction is provided in detail. An approach to study and to classify these Lie algebras is given through the theory of extensions via appropriate cocycles and representations on which a group action is naturally defined. Also, necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of invariant metrics on the studied extensions are given. It is shown that any solvable q…
In this paper, we study a class of Leibniz conformal algebras called quadratic Leibniz conformal algebras. An equivalent characterization of a Leibniz conformal algebra $R=\mathbb{C}[\partial]V$ through three algebraic operations on $V$ are given. By this characterization, several constructions of quadratic Leibniz conformal algebras are presented. Moreover, one-dimensional central extensions of quadratic Leibniz conformal algebras are considered using some bilinear forms on $V$. In particular, we also study one-dimensional Leibniz central extensions of quadratic Lie conformal algebras.
In this paper we show that a split central simple algebra with quadratic pair which decomposes into a tensor product of quaternion algebras with involution and a quaternion algebra with quadratic pair is adjoint to a quadratic Pfister form. This result is new in characteristic two, otherwise it is equivalent to the Pfister Factor Conjecture proven in [3].
We associate to every central simple algebra with involution of orthogonal type in characteristic two a totally singular quadratic form which reflects certain anisotropy properties of the involution. It is shown that this quadratic form can be used to classify totally decomposable algebras with orthogonal involution. Also, using this form, a criterion is obtained for an orthogonal involution on a split algebra to be conjugated to the transpose involution.
The purpose of this paper is to study quadratic color Hom-Lie algebras. We present some constructions of quadratic color Hom-Lie algebras which we use to provide several examples. We describe $T^\ast$-extensions and central extensions of color Hom-Lie algebras and establish some cohomological characterizations.
A quadratic Lie conformal algebra corresponds to a Hamiltonian pair in \cite{GD}, which plays fundamental roles in completely integrable systems. Moreover, it also corresponds to certain compatible pairs of a Lie algebra and a Novikov algebra which was called Gel'fand-Dorfman bialgebra by Xu in \cite{X1}. In this paper, central extensions and conformal derivations of quadratic Lie conformal algebras are studied in terms of Gel'fand-Dorfman bialgebras. It is shown that central extensions and conformal derivations of a quadratic Lie conformal algebra are related with some bilinear forms and some…
It is shown that, over a field of characteristic not $2$, the dimension of an anisotropic quadratic Pfister form of trivial total signature is at most twice the dimension of some central division algebra of exponent $2$. The proof is based on computations with quadratic trace forms of central simple algebras.
An orthogonal involution $σ$ on a central simple algebra $A$, after scalar extension to the function field $\mathcal{F}(A)$ of the Severi--Brauer variety of $A$, is adjoint to a quadratic form $q_σ$ over $\mathcal{F}(A)$, which is uniquely defined up to a scalar factor. Some properties of the involution, such as hyperbolicity, and isotropy up to an odd-degree extension of the base field, are encoded in this quadratic form, meaning that they hold for the involution $σ$ if and only if they hold for $q_σ$. As opposed to this, we prove that there exists non-totally decomposable orthogonal involuti…
Hom-Lie algebras defined on central extensions of a given quadratic Lie algebra that in turn admit an invariant metric, are studied. It is shown how some of these algebras are naturally equipped with other symmetric, bilinear forms that satisfy an invariant condition for their twisted multiplication maps. The twisted invariant bilinear forms so obtained resemble the Cartan-Killing forms defined on ordinary Lie algebras. This fact allows one to reproduce on the Hom-Lie algebras hereby studied, some results that are classically associated to the ordinary Cartan-Killing form.
Pfister's Local-Global Principle states that a quadratic form over a (formally) real field is weakly hyperbolic (i.e. represents a torsion element in the Witt ring) if and only if its total signature is zero. This result extends naturally to the setting of central simple algebras with involution. The present article provides a new proof of this result and extends it to the case of signatures at preorderings. Furthermore the quantitative relation between nilpotence and torsion is explored for quadratic forms as well as for central simple algebras with involution.
Let $L$ be a separable quadratic extension of either $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We propose efficient algorithms for finding isomorphisms between quaternion algebras over $L$. Our techniques are based on computing maximal one-sided ideals of the corestriction of a central simple $L$-algebra.
This paper contains detailed proofs of our results on the moduli space and the structure of noncommutative 3-spheres. We develop the notion of central quadratic form for quadratic algebras, and a general theory which creates a bridge between noncommutative differential geometry and its purely algebraic counterpart. It allows to construct a morphism from an involutive quadratic algebras to a C*-algebra constructed from the characteristic variety and the hermitian line bundle associated to the central quadratic form. We apply the general theory in the case of noncommutative 3-spheres and show th…
