It has been shown that the primary, old-fashioned idea of Sakharov's induced gravity and gauge interactions, in the "one-loop dominance" version, works astonishingly well yielding phenomenologically reasonable results. As a byproduct, the issue of the role of the UV cutoff in the context of the induced gravity has been reexamined (an idea of self-cutoff induced gravity). As an additional check, the black hole entropy has been used in the place of the action. Finally, it has been explicitly shown that the induced coupling constants of gauge interactions of the standard model assume qualitatively realistic values.
We study a slight variation of the unimodular gauge condition which we call "the derivative gauge condition". We show that at the classical level these conditions are completely equivalent up to a surface term. At the quantum level the derivative gauge condition can be easily implemented by analogy with gauge fixing in a quantum gauge theory. This condition might have advantages and disadvantages upon the context.
Inspired by Verlinde's idea, some modified versions of entropic gravity have appeared in the literature. Extending them in a unified formalism, we derive the generalized gravitational equations accordingly. From gravitational equations, the energy-momentum conservation law and cosmological equations are investigated. The covariant conservation law of energy-momentum tensor severely constrains viable modifications of entropic gravity. A discrepancy arises when two independent methods are applied to the homogeneous isotropic universe, posing a serious challenge to modified models of entropic gra…
We revisit the classical stability of Schwarzschild black hole in fourth-order theories of gravity. On the contrary of the stability of this black hole, it turns out that the linearized perturbations exhibit unstable modes featuring the Gregory-Laflamme instability of five-dimensional black string. This shows clearly an instability of black hole in fourth-order gravity with $α=-β/3$.
Applying functional renormalization group methods, we describe two inequivalent ways of defining the renormalization group of matter-coupled four dimensional gravity, in the approximation where only the conformal factor is dynamical and taking the trace anomaly explicitly into account. We make contact with earlier work and briefly discuss the presence or absence of fixed points, depending on the truncation of the action and other approximations.
The first law of thermodynamics at black hole horizons is known to be obtainable from the gravitational field equations. A recent study claims that the contributions at inner horizons should be considered in order to give the conventional first law of black hole thermodynamics. Following this method, we revisit the thermodynamic aspects of field equations in the Lovelock gravity and f(R) gravity by focusing on two typical classes of charged black holes in the two theories.
Reconsidering the harmonic space description of the self-dual Einstein equations, we streamline the proof that all self-dual pure gravitational fields allow a local description in terms of an unconstrained analytic prepotential in harmonic space. Our formulation yields a simple recipe for constructing self-dual metrics starting from any explicit choice of such prepotential; and we illustrate the procedure by producing a metric related to the Taub-NUT solution from the simplest monomial choice of prepotential.
It is well known that one cannot apply a conformal transformation to $f(T)$ gravity to obtain a minimally coupled scalar field model, and thus no Einstein frame exists for $f(T)$ gravity. Furthermore nonminimally coupled "teleparallel dark energy models" are not conformally equivalent to $f(T)$ gravity. However, it can be shown that $f(T)$ gravity is conformally equivalent to a teleparallel phantom scalar field model with a nonminimal coupling to a boundary term only. In this work, we extend this analysis by considering a recently studied extended class of models, known as $f(T,B)$ gravity, wh…
We show how to properly gauge fix all the symmetries of the Ponzano-Regge model for 3D quantum gravity. This amounts to do explicit finite computations for transition amplitudes. We give the construction of the transition amplitudes in the presence of interacting quantum spinning particles. We introduce a notion of operators whose expectation value gives rise to either gauge fixing, introduction of time, or insertion of particles, according to the choice. We give the link between the spin foam quantization and the hamiltonian quantization. We finally show the link between Ponzano-Regge model a…
We perform a brief review on Dirac's procedure applied to the well known Einstein's linearized gravity in $N > 2$ dimensions. Considering it as a gauge theory and therefore the manifestation of second class constraints in analogy with the electromagnetic case, focussing our interest in the Coulomb's gauge. We also check the consistency with the Maskawa-Nakajima reduction procedure and end with some remarks on both procedures.
We revisit the old (fourth-order or quadratically generated) gravity model of Starobinsky in four space-time dimensions, and derive the (inflaton) scalar potential in the equivalent scalar-tensor gravity model via a Legendre-Weyl transform. The inflaton scalar potential is used to compute the (CMB) observables of inflation associated with curvature perturbations (namely, the scalar and tensor spectral indices, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio), including the new next-to-leading-order terms with respect to the inverse number of e-foldings. The results are compared to the recent (WMAP5) experiment…
In this paper we investigate the behavior of linearized gravitational excitation in the Born-Infeld Gravity in $AdS_3$ space. We obtain the linearized equation of motion and show that this higher order gravity propagate two gravitons, massless and massive, on the $AdS_3$ background. In contrast to the $R^2$ models, such as TMG or NMG, Born-Infeld Gravity does not have a critical point for any regular choice of parameters. So the logarithmic solution is not a solution of this model, due to this one can not find a logarithmic conformal field theory as a dual model for Born-Infeld Gravity.
It has been shown that the old-fashioned idea of Sakharov's induced gravity and gauge interactions in the "one-loop dominance" version works astonishingly well yielding reasonable parameters. It appears that induced coupling constants of gauge interactions of the standard model assume qualitatively realistic values. Moreover, it is possible to induce the Barbero--Immirzi parameter of canonical gravity from the fields entering the standard model.
An alternative approach to scalar quantum electrodynamics has been proposed where the usual gauge redundancy of the theory do not manifest. The gauge-dependence of Coleman- Weinberg effective potential is resolved using gauge-free approach leading to a unique scalar to vector mass ratio. The gauge-free result is compared with the one obtained in Vilkovisky-DeWitt geometric framework and it is shown that it differs from the standard result reported earlier. It is also shown that for reparametrization invariance of the Coleman-Weinberg potential one must combine the Vilkovisky-DeWitt method with…
The Penner type beta-ensemble for Omega-deformed N=2 SU(2) gauge theory with two massless flavors arising as a limiting case from the AGT conjecture is considered. The partition function can be calculated perturbatively in a saddle-point approximation. A large N limit reproduces the gauge theory partition function expanded in a strong coupling regime, for any beta and beyond tree-level, confirming previous results obtained via special geometry and the holomorphic anomaly equation. The leading terms and gap of the gauge theory free energy at the monopole/dyon point follow as a corollary.
We revisit the gauge-covariant canonical formalism by separating explicitly physical and gauge degrees of freedom. We show in particular that the gauge-invariant linear and angular momentum operators proposed by Chen et al. can consistently be derived from the standard procedure based on the Noether's theorem. Finally, we demonstrate that this approach is essentially equivalent to the gauge-invariant canonical formalism based on the concept of Dirac variables. Because of many similarities with the background field method, the formalism developed here should also be relevant to general relativi…
The on shell equivalence of first order and second order formalisms for the Einstein-Hilbert action does not hold for those actions quadratic in curvature. It would seem that by considering the connection and the metric as independent dynamical variables, there are no quartic propagators for any dynamical variable. This suggests that it is possible to get both renormalizability and unitarity along these lines. We have studied a particular instance of those theories, namely Weyl gravity. Although the ground state of this system is difficult to analyze, we have been able to study the physical ef…
We construct the colliding plane wave solutions in the higher-dimensional gravity theory with fluxes and dilaton, with a more general ansatz on the metric. We consider two classes of solutions to the equations of motions and after imposing the junction conditions we find that they are all physically acceptable. In particular, we manage to obtain the higher-dimensional Bell-Szekeres solutions in the Maxwell-Einstein gravity theory, and the flux-CPW solutions in the eleven-dimensional supergravity theory. All the solutions have been shown to develop the late time curvature singularity.
We re-derive the first law of black hole mechanics in the context of the Einstein-Maxwell theory in a gauge-invariant way introducing "momentum maps" associated to field strengths and the vectors that generate their symmetries. These objects play the role of generalized thermodynamical potentials in the first law and satisfy generalized zeroth laws, as first observed in the context of principal gauge bundles by Prabhu, but they can be generalized to more complex situations. We test our ideas on the $d$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-Tangherlini black hole.
We revisit the two-field mimetic gravity model with shift symmetries recently proposed in the literature, especially the problems of degrees of freedom and stabilities. We first study the model at the linear cosmological perturbation level by quadratic Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations. We show that there are actually two (instead of one) scalar degrees of freedom in this model in addition to two tensor modes. We then push on the study to the full non-linear level in terms of the Hamiltonian analysis, and confirm our result from the linear perturbation theory. We also consider the case w…
A general free differential algebra encoding the anti-Higgs mechanism among two-index antisymmetric tensors and gauge vectors is analyzed at the full group theoretical level. N=2 supergravity in five dimensions coupled to tensor, vector and hyper multiplets with all possible couplings included is reconsidered from this point of view. Within our approach, we find that some of the constraints on the couplings usually considered are too stringent and may in fact be relaxed. This generalization also affects the scalar potential.
Using the connection with the Frobenius manifold structure, we study the matrix model description of minimal Liouville gravity (MLG) based on the Douglas string equation. Our goal is to find an exact discrete formulation of the (q,p) MLG model that intrinsically contains information about the conformal selection rules. We discuss how to modify the Frobenius manifold structure appropriately for this purposes. We propose a modification of the construction for Lee-Yang series involving the $A_{p-1}$ algebra instead of the previously used $A_1$ algebra. With the new prescription, we calculate corr…
We study the no gravity limit G_{N}-> 0 of the Ponzano-Regge amplitudes with massive particles and show that we recover in this limit Feynman graph amplitudes (with Hadamard propagator) expressed as an abelian spin foam model. We show how the G_{N} expansion of the Ponzano-Regge amplitudes can be resummed. This leads to the conclusion that the dynamics of quantum particles coupled to quantum 3d gravity can be expressed in terms of an effective new non commutative field theory which respects the principles of doubly special relativity. We discuss the construction of Lorentzian spin foam models …
Kappa-Minkowski space-time is an example of noncommutative space-time with potentially interesting phenomenology. However, the construction of field theories on this space is plagued with ambiguities. We propose to resolve certain ambiguities by clarifying the geometrical picture of gauge transformations on the kappa-Minkowski space-time in the twist approach. We construct the action for the noncommutative U(1) gauge fields in a geometric way, as an integral of a maximal form. The effective action with the first order corrections in the deformation parameter is obtained using the Seiberg-Witte…
We find a new gauge in which U(1) noncommutative instantons are explicitly non-singular on the whole noncommutative R^4, thus resolving the previous confusions of the author. We start with the pedagogical introduction to the noncommutative gauge theories.
We apply the new thermodynamical method proposed initially by Hindi. et al \cite{base} to revisit the phase structure of the AdS black hole in the massive gravity framework. In comparison to the standard thermodynamical method used in literature \cite{mass}, we show that this new technical approach can easily reproduce the critical behavior inherent to this black hole configuration and addresses some of the shortcomings of the standard method. We also show the ability of this new perception to find all possible critical points and regions in which phase transitions occur, an impossible task in…
In this work, we revisit the perturbations that are generated in the bounce inflation scenario constructed within the framework of $f(T)$ theory. It has been well known that pure $f(T)$ theory cannot give rise to bounce inflation behavior, so aside from the gravity part, we also employ a canonical scalar field for minimal extension. We calculate the perturbations in $f(T)$ theory using the well-established ADM formalism, and find various conditions to avoid their pathologies. We find that it is indeed very difficult to obtain a healthy model without those pathologies, however, one may find a w…
We present an elegant method to prove the invariance of the Chern-Simons part of the non-Abelian action for N coinciding D-branes under the R-R and NS-NS gauge transformations, by carefully defining what is meant by a background gauge transformation in the non-Abelian world volume action. We study as well the invariance under massive gauge transformations of the massive Type IIA supergravity and show that no massive dielectric couplings are necessary to achieve this invariance. We show that this result is consistent with (massive) T-duality from the non-Abelian action for N D9-branes.
We reconsider the renormalizability of topological Yang-Mills field theories in (anti-)self-dual Landau gauges. By employing algebraic renormalization techniques we show that there is only one independent renormalization. Moreover, due to the rich set of Ward identities, we are able to obtain some important exact features of the (connected and one-particle irreducible) two-point functions. Specifically, we show that all two-point functions are tree-level exact.
We consider the problem of identifying the CFT's that may be dual to pure gravity in three dimensions with negative cosmological constant. The c-theorem indicates that three-dimensional pure gravity is consistent only at certain values of the coupling constant, and the relation to Chern-Simons gauge theory hints that these may be the values at which the dual CFT can be holomorphically factorized. If so, and one takes at face value the minimum mass of a BTZ black hole, then the energy spectrum of three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant can be determined exactly. At the mos…
The double slit experiment is iconic and widely used in classrooms to demonstrate the fundamental mystery of quantum physics. The puzzling feature is that the probability of an electron arriving at the detector when both slits are open is not the sum of the probabilities when the slits are open separately. The superposition principle of quantum mechanics tells us to add amplitudes rather than probabilities and this results in interference. This experiment defies our classical intuition that the probabilities of exclusive events add. In understanding the emergence of the classical world from th…
We present an explicit construction for the central extension of the group $\Map(X, G)$ where $X$ is a compact manifold and $G$ is a Lie group. If $X$ is a complex curve we obtain a simple construction of the extension by the Picard variety $\Pic(X)$. The construction is easily adapted to the extension of $\Aut(E)$, the gauge group of automorphisms of a nontrivial vector bundle $E$.
Topological gravity is equivalent to physical gravity in two dimensions in a way that is still mysterious, though by now it has been proved by Kontsevich. In this paper it is shown that a similar relation between topological and physical Yang-Mills theory holds in two dimensions; in this case, however, the relation can be explained by a direct mapping between the two path integrals. This (1) explains many strange facts about two dimensional Yang-Mills theory, like the way the partition function can be expressed exactly as a sum over classical solutions, including unstable ones; (2) makes the c…
In Gribov-Zwanziger scenario of color confinement, Zwanziger proposed two types of horizon function in lattice Landau gauge, the first one and the second one of which foundation was discussed in detail. The second type horizon function is focussed on in the present study. Its derivation and the horizon condition are briefly reviewed along the line of Zwanziger, and it is also reviewed that this horizon condition and Kugo-Ojima color confinement criterion coincide in the continuum limit. In case of free boundary condition in contrast to periodic boundary condition, it was shown that the horizon…
We perform detailed investigation of cosmological perturbations in f(T) theory of gravity coupled with scalar field. Our work emphasizes on the way to gauge fix the theory and we examine all possible modes of perturbations up to second order. The analysis includes pseudoscalar and pseudovector modes in addition to the usual scalar, vector, and tensor modes. We find no gravitational propagating degree of freedom in the scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, as well as pseudovector modes. In addition, we find that the scalar and tensor perturbations have exactly the same form as their counterparts in usu…
We consider supersymmetric gauge theories on round 3-sphere with a certain background gauge field. The Lagrangians break the usual symmetry because the background gauge field which we have turned on violates the isometry. In order to maintain the supersymmetry, we choose unfamiliar charged Killing spinors as N = 2 SUSY parameters. We perform localization calculous within this setup and find the double sine function as we expected. We comment on more direct relationship between theories on round sphere and squashed sphere via Weyl transformation.
We attempt a critical reconsideration of "detailed balance" as a principle that can be used to restrict the proliferation of couplings in Horava-Lifshitz gravity. We re-examine the shortcomings that have been usually associated with it in the literature and we argue that easy remedies can be found for all of them within the framework of detailed balance, and that the most persistent of them are actually related to projectability. We show that, once projectability is abandoned, detailed balance reduces the number of independent couplings by roughly an order of magnitude and imposes only one res…
We revisit the annulus amplitude of FZZT branes with general matter sectors (r,s) using the recent development of matrix model and minimal Liouville gravity. Following the boundary description of the 1-matrix model and bulk resonance transformation between primary operators we find the consistency of the brane decomposition into (1,1)-branes. We also investigate the corresponding results obtained directly from the minimal Liouville gravity and demonstrate the perfect agreement with the matrix results.
We apply the formalism of extended BRS symmetry to the investigation of the gauge dependence of the effective potential in a spontaneously symmetry broken gauge theory. This formalism, which includes a set of Grassmann parameters defined as the BRS variations of the gauge-fixing parameters, allows us to derive in a quick and unambiguous way the related Nielsen identities, which express the physical gauge independence, in a class of generalized 't Hooft gauges, of the effective potential. We show in particular that the validity of the Nielsen identities does not require any constraint on the ga…
We investigate on a Randall-Sundrum warped spacetime, a Kerr-like black hole in the conformal dilaton-Higgs $(ω,Φ)$ gravity model. We applied the antipodal boundary condition on the Klein surface using the $\mathds{Z}_2$-symmetry in the "large" (bulk) extra dimension. It turns out that the pseudo-Riemannian 5D manifold can be written as an effective 4D Riemannian brane spacetime, $\mathds{R}^2_+\times\mathds{R}^1\times S^1$, where $\mathds{R}^2_+$ is conformally flat. The solution in valid on both manifolds. So the solution can equally well described by an instanton solution. An advantage is t…
We attempt to deal with the orbifold singularities in the moduli space of flat connections for supersymmetric gauge theories on the torus. The fields are restricted to the fundamental domain, containing no gauge copies, but requiring a boundary condition in field space.
Color symmetry is spontaneously broken in quark matter at high density as a consequence of di-quark condensations with exhibiting color superconductivity. Non-Abelian vortices or color magnetic flux tubes stably exist in the color-flavor locked phase at asymptotically high-density. The effective worldsheet theory of a single non-Abelian vortex was previously calculated in the singular gauge to obtain the ${\mathbb C}P^2$ model [ arXiv:0908.4470 , arXiv:0912.1352 ]. Here, we reconstruct the effective theory in a regular gauge without taking a singular gauge, confirming the previous results in t…
I revisit rotating black hole solutions in three-dimensional Horava gravity with z = 2 as a simpler set-up of the renormalizable quantum gravity `a la Lifshitz and DeWitt. The solutions have a curvature singularity at the origin for a non-vanishing rotation parameter J, unlike the black holes in three-dimensional Einstein gravity. For anti-de Sitter space, there are black hole event horizons as usual and the singularity is not naked, in agreement with the cosmic censorship. On the other hand, for flat or de Sitter space, the earlier solution has also a cosmic-censorship problem because there a…
We consider theories with gauged chiral fermions in which there are abelian anomalies, and no nonabelian anomalies (but there may be nonabelian gauge fields present). We construct an associated theory that is gauge-invariant, renormalizable, and with the same particle content, by adding a finite number of terms to the action. Alternatively one can view the new theory as arising from the original theory by using another regularization, one that is gauge-invariant. The situation is reminiscent of the mechanism of adding Fadeev-Popov ghosts to an unsatisfactory gauge theory, to arrive at the usua…
In this paper, we examine a generic theory of 1+1-dimensional gravity with coupling to a scalar field. Special attention is paid to a class of models that have a power-law form of dilaton potential and can capably admit black hole solutions. The study focuses on the formulation of a Lorentzian partition function. We incorporate the principles of Hamiltonian thermodynamics, as well as black hole spectroscopy, and find that the partition function can be expressed in a well-defined, calculable form. We then go on to extract the black hole entropy, including the leading-order quantum correction. A…
I briefly review results obtained within the variational Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge and confront them with recent lattice data. The variational approach is extended to non-Gaussian wave functionals including three- and four-gluon kernels in the exponential of the vacuum wave functional and used to calculate the three-gluon vertex. A new functional renormalization group flow equation for Hamiltonian Yang--Mills theory in Coulomb gauge is solved for the gluon and ghost propagator under the assumption of ghost dominance. The results are compared to those obtained i…
We study the problem of consistent interactions for spin-3 gauge fields in flat spacetime of arbitrary dimension n>3. Under the sole assumptions of Poincaré and parity invariance, local and perturbative deformation of the free theory, we determine all nontrivial consistent deformations of the abelian gauge algebra and classify the corresponding deformations of the quadratic action, at first order in the deformation parameter. We prove that all such vertices are cubic, contain a total of either three or five derivatives and are uniquely characterized by a rank-three constant tensor (an internal…
We consider the Wess-Zumino-Witten theory to obtain the functional integral bosonization of the Thirring-Wess model with an arbitrary regularization parameter. Proceeding a systematic of decomposing the Bose field algebra into gauge-invariant- and gauge-noninvariant field subalgebras, we obtain the local decoupled quantum action. The generalized operator solutions for the equations of motion are reconstructed from the functional integral formalism. The isomorphism between the QED2 (QCD2) with broken gauge symmetry by a regularization prescription and the Abelian (non-Abelian) Thirring-Wess mod…
We construct infinite number of conserved nonlocal charges for type IIB superstring on the AdS5xS5 space in the conformal gauge without assuming any kappa gauge fixing, and show that they satisfy the super Yangian algebra. The resultant algebra is the same as our previous work, where a special gauge was assumed in such a way that the Noether current satisfies a flatness condition. However the flatness condition for the Noether current of a superstring on the AdS space is broken in general. We show that the anomalous contribution is absorbed into the current where fermionic constraints play an …
This paper revisits the nonlinear realization of spontaneously broken N=1 supersymmetry. It is shown that the constrained superfield formalism can be reinterpreted in the language of standard realization of nonlinear supersymmetry via a new and simpler route. Explicit formulas of actions are presented for general renormalizable theories with or without gauge interactions. The nonlinear Wess-Zumino gauge is discussed and relations are pointed out for different definitions of gauge fields. In addition, a general procedure is provided to deal with theories of arbitrary Kahler potentials.
Extended BRST invariance (BRST plus anti-BRST invariances) provides in principle a natural way of introducing the complete gauge fixing structure associated to a gauge field theory in the minimum representation of the algebra. However, as it happens in topological Yang Mills theory, not all gauge fixings can be obtained from a symmetrical extended BRST algebra, where antighosts belong to the same representation of the Lorentz group of the corresponding ghosts. We show here that, at non interacting level, a simple field redefinition makes it possible to start with an extended BRST algebra with …
We provide a uniform solution to 4d N=2 gauge theory with a single gauge group G=A,D,E when the one-loop contribution to the beta function from any irreducible component R of the hypermultiplets is less than or equal to half of that of the adjoint representation. The solution is given by a non-compact Calabi-Yau geometry, whose defining equation is built from explicitly known polynomials W_G and X_R, associated respectively to the gauge group G and each irreducible component R. We provide many pieces of supporting evidence, for example by analyzing the system from the point of view of the 6d N…
We perform the Hamiltonian analysis of several mimetic gravity models and compare our results with those obtained previously by different authors. We verify that for healthy mimetic scalar-tensor theories the condition for the corresponding part of the Hamiltonian to be bounded from below is the positive value of the mimetic field energy density $λ$. We show that for mimetic dark matter possessing a shift symmetry the mimetic energy density remains positive in time, provided appropriate boundary conditions are imposed on its initial value, while in models without shift symmetry the positive en…
A version of the kappa-symmetric super D-p-brane action is presented in which the tension is a dynamical variable, equal to the flux of a p-form worldvolume gauge field. The Lagrangian is shown to be invariant under all (super)isometries of the background for appropriate transformations of the worldvolume gauge fields, which determine the central charges in the symmetry algebra. We also present the Hamiltonian form of the action in a general supergravity background.
Previous studies of high-energy jet stopping in strongly-coupled plasmas have lacked a clear gauge-theory specification of the initial state. We show how to set up a well-defined gauge theory problem to study jet stopping in pure {\cal N}=4 super Yang Mills theory (somewhat analogous to Hofman and Maldacena's studies at zero temperature) and solve it by using gauge-gravity duality for real-time, finite-temperature 3-point correlators. Previous studies have found that the stopping distance scales with energy as E^{1/3} (with disagreement on the gauge coupling dependence). We do find that none o…
The possibility of non-trivial representations of the gauge group on wavefunctionals of a gauge invariant quantum field theory leads to a generation of mass for intermediate vector and tensor bosons. The mass parameters m show up as central charges in the algebra of constraints, which then become of second-class nature. The gauge group coordinates acquire dynamics outside the null-mass shell and provide the longitudinal field degrees of freedom that massless bosons need to form massive bosons. This is a `non-Higgs' mechanism that could provide new clues for the best understanding of the symmet…
