One of the most central and long-standing open questions in combinatorial design theory concerns the existence of Steiner t-designs for large values of t. Although in his classical 1987 paper, L. Teirlinck has shown that non-trivial t-designs exist for all values of t, no non-trivial Steiner t-design with t > 5 has been constructed until now. Understandingly, the case t = 6 has received considerable attention. There has been recent progress concerning the existence of highly symmetric Steiner 6-designs: It is shown in [M. Huber, J. Algebr. Comb. 26 (2007), pp. 453-476] that no non-trivial flag-transitive Steiner 6-design can exist. In this paper, we announce that essentially also no block-transitive Steiner 6-design can exist.
Among the properties of homogeneity of incidence structures flag-transitivity obviously is a particularly important and natural one. Consequently, in the last decades also flag-transitive Steiner tdesigns (i.e. flag-transitive t-(v,k,1) designs) have been investigated, whereas only by the use of the classification of the finite simple groups has it been possible in recent years to essentially characterize all flag-transitive Steiner 2-designs. However, despite the finite simple group classification, for Steiner t-designs with parameters t > 2 such characterizations have remained challenging op…
As a consequence of the classification of the finite simple groups, it has been possible in recent years to characterize Steiner t-designs, that is t-(v,k,1) designs, mainly for t = 2, admitting groups of automorphisms with sufficiently strong symmetry properties. However, despite the finite simple group classification, for Steiner t-designs with t > 2 most of these characterizations have remained longstanding challenging problems. Especially, the determination of all flag-transitive Steiner t-designs with 2 < t < 7 is of particular interest and has been open for about 40 years (cf. [11, p. 14…
We solve the long-standing open problem of classifying all 3-(v,k,1) designs with a flag-transitive group of automorphisms (cf. A. Delandtsheer, Geom. Dedicata 41 (1992), p. 147; and in: "Handbook of Incidence Geometry", ed. by F. Buekenhout, Elsevier Science, Amsterdam, 1995, p. 273; but presumably dating back to 1965). Our result relies on the classification of the finite 2-transitive permutation groups.
The $q$-analogs of basic designs are discussed. It is proved that the existence of any unknown Steiner structures, the $q$-analogs of Steiner systems, implies the existence of unknown Steiner systems. Optimal $q$-analogs covering designs are presented. Some lower and upper bounds on the sizes of $q$-analogs covering designs are proved.
A Steiner quadruple system of order v is a 3-(v,4,1) design, and will be denoted SQS(v). Using the classification of finite 2-transitive permutation groups all SQS(v) with a flag-transitive automorphism group are completely classified, thus solving the "still open and longstanding problem of classifying all flag-transitive 3-(v,k,1) designs" for the smallest value of k. Moreover, a generalization of a result of H. Lueneburg (1965, Math. Z. 89, 82-90) is achieved.
Let $\F_q^n$ be a vector space of dimension $n$ over the finite field $\F_q$. A $q$-analog of a Steiner system (briefly, a $q$-Steiner system), denoted $S_q[t,k,n]$, is a set $S$ of $k$-dimensional subspaces of $\F_q^n$ such that each $t$-dimensional subspace of $\F_q^n$ is contained in exactly one element of $S$. Presently, $q$-Steiner systems are known only for $t=1$, and in the trivial cases $t = k$ and $k = n$. Invthis paper, the first nontrivial $q$-Steiner systems with $t >= 2$ are constructed. Specifically, several nonisomorphic $q$-Steiner systems $S_2[2,3,13]$ are found by requiring t…
A combinatorial characterization of resolvable Steiner 2-$(v,k,1)$ designs embeddable as maximal arcs in a projective plane of order $(v-k)/(k-1)$ is proved, and a generalization of a conjecture by Andries Brouwer \cite{Br} is formulated.
One of the most intriguing problems, in $q$-analogs of designs and codes, is the existence question of an infinite family of $q$-analog of Steiner systems (spreads not included) in general, and the existence question for the $q$-analog of the Fano plane in particular. We exhibit a completely new method to attack this problem. In the process we define a new family of designs whose existence is implied by the existence of $q$-Steiner systems, but could exist even if the related $q$-Steiner systems do not exist. The method is based on a possible system obtained by puncturing all the subspaces of …
Techniques of producing new combinatorial structures from old ones are commonly called trades. The switching principle applies for a broad class of designs: it is a local transformation that modifies two columns of the incidence matrix. In this paper, we present a construction, which is a generalization of the switching transform for the class of Steiner 2-designs. We call this construction paramodification of Steiner 2-designs, since it modifies the parallelism of a subsystem. We study in more detail the paramodifications of affine planes, Steiner triple systems, and abstract unitals. Computa…
Given an STS(v), we ask if there is a permutation of the points of the design such that no $\ell$ consecutive points in this permutation contain a block of the design. Results are obtained in the cases $\ell = 3,4$.

A Steiner 2-design of block size k is an ordered pair (V, B) of finite sets such that B is a family of k-subsets of V in which each pair of elements of V appears exactly once. A Steiner 2-design is said to be r-even-free if for every positive integer i =< r it contains no set of i elements of B in which each element of V appears exactly even times. We study the even-freeness of a Steiner 2-design when the cyclic group acts regularly on V. We prove the existence of infinitely many nontrivial Steiner 2-designs of large block size which have the cyclic automorphisms and higher even-freeness than …
A design is additive under an abelian group $G$ (briefly, $G$-additive) if, up to isomorphism, its point set is contained in $G$ and the elements of each block sum up to zero. The only known Steiner 2-designs that are $G$-additive for some $G$ have block size which is either a prime power or a prime power plus one. Indeed they are the point-line designs of the affine spaces $AG(n,q)$, the point-line designs of the projective planes $PG(2,q)$, and the point-line designs of the projective spaces $PG(n,2)$. In the attempt to find new examples, possibly with a block size which is neither a prime p…
Many code families such as low-density parity-check codes, fractional repetition codes, batch codes and private information retrieval codes with low storage overhead rely on the use of combinatorial block designs or derivatives thereof. In the context of distributed storage applications, one is often faced with system design issues that impose additional constraints on the coding schemes, and therefore on the underlying block designs. Here, we address one such problem, pertaining to server access frequency balancing, by introducing a new form of Steiner systems, termed MaxMinSum Steiner system…
Let $n$, $k$, and $t$ be integers satisfying $n>k>t\ge2$. A Steiner system with parameters $t$, $k$, and $n$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices in which every set of $t$ distinct vertices is contained in exactly one edge. An outstanding problem in Design Theory is to determine whether a nontrivial Steiner system exists for $t\geq6$. In this note we prove that for every $k>t\ge2$ and sufficiently large $n$, there exists an almost Steiner system with parameters $t$, $k$, and $n$; that is, there exists a $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices such that every set of $t$ distinct vertices …
An $\ell$-good sequencing of an STS$(v)$ is a permutation of the points of the design such that no $\ell$ consecutive points in this permutation contain a block of the design. We prove that, for every integer $\ell \geq 3$, there is an $\ell$-good sequencing of any STS$(v)$ provided that $v$ is sufficiently large. We also prove some new nonexistence results for $\ell$-good sequencings of STS$(v)$.
Let $G$ be a simple finite graph and $G'$ be a subgraph of $G$. A $G'$-design $(X,\cal B)$ of order $n$ is said to be embedded into a $G$-design $(X\cup U,\cal C)$ of order $n+u$, if there is an injective function $f:\cal B\rightarrow \cal C$ such that $B$ is a subgraph of $f(B)$ for every $B\in\cal B$. The function $f$ is called an embedding of $(X,\cal B)$ into $(X\cup U,\cal C)$. If $u$ attains the minimum possible value, then $f$ is a minimum embedding. Here, by means of König's Line Coloring Theorem and edge coloring properties a complete solution is given to the problem of determining a …
For a block design $\cal{D}$, a series of {\sf block intersection graphs} $G_i$, or $i$-{\rm BIG}($\cal{D}$), $i=0, ..., k$ is defined in which the vertices are the blocks of $\cal{D}$, with two vertices adjacent if and only if the corresponding blocks intersect in exactly $i$ elements. A silver graph $G$ is defined with respect to a maximum independent set of $G$, called a {\sf diagonal} of that graph. Let $G$ be $r$-regular and $c$ be a proper $(r + 1)$-coloring of $G$. A vertex $x$ in $G$ is said to be {\sf rainbow} with respect to $c$ if every color appears in the closed neighborhood $N[x]…
A perfect matroid design (PMD) is a matroid whose flats of the same rank all have the same size. In this paper we introduce the q-analogue of a PMD and its properties. In order to do so, we first establish a new cryptomorphic definition for q-matroids. We show that q-Steiner systems are examples of q-PMD's and we use this q-matroid structure to construct subspace designs from q-Steiner systems. We apply this construction to the only known q-Steiner system, which has parameters S(2,3,13;2), and hence establish the existence of a new subspace design with parameters 2-(13,4,5115;2).
This paper takes a significant step towards confirming a long-standing and far-reaching conjecture of Peter J. Cameron and Cheryl E. Praeger. They conjectured in 1993 that there are no non-trivial block-transitive 6-designs. We prove that the Cameron-Praeger conjecture is true for the important case of non-trivial Steiner 6-designs, i.e. for 6-$(v,k,λ)$ designs with $λ=1$, except possibly when the group is $P\GammaL(2,p^e)$ with $p=2$ or 3, and $e$ is an odd prime power.
Novák conjectured in 1974 that for any cyclic Steiner triple systems of order $v$ with $v\equiv 1\pmod{6}$, it is always possible to choose one block from each block orbit so that the chosen blocks are pairwise disjoint. We consider the generalization of this conjecture to cyclic $(v,k,λ)$-designs with $1 \leq λ\leq k-1$. Superimposing multiple copies of a cyclic symmetric design shows that the generalization cannot hold for all $v$, but we conjecture that it holds whenever $v$ is sufficiently large compared to $k$. We confirm that the generalization of the conjecture holds when $v$ is prime a…
A design is said to be $f$-pyramidal when it has an automorphism group which fixes $f$ points and acts sharply transitively on all the others. The problem of establishing the set of values of $v$ for which there exists an $f$-pyramidal Steiner triple system of order $v$ has been deeply investigated in the case $f=1$ but it remains open for a special class of values of $v$. The same problem for the next possible $f$, which is $f=3$, is here completely solved: there exists a $3$-pyramidal Steiner triple system of order $v$ if and only if $v\equiv7,9,15$ (mod $24$) or $v\equiv 3, 19$ (mod 48).
Coding theory and $t$-designs have close connections and interesting interplay. In this paper, we first introduce a class of ternary linear codes and study their parameters. We then focus on their three-weight subcodes with a special weight distribution. We determine the weight distributions of some shortened codes and punctured codes of these three-weight subcodes. These shortened and punctured codes contain some codes that have the same parameters as the best ternary linear codes known in the database maintained by Markus Grassl at http://www.codetables.de/. These three-weight subcodes with …
An Erdős-Ko-Rado set in a block design is a set of pairwise intersecting blocks. In this article we study Erdős-Ko-Rado sets in 2-(v,k,1) designs, Steiner systems. The Steiner triple systems and other special classes are treated separately. For unitals we also determine an upper bound on the size of the second-largest maximal Erdos-Ko-Rado sets.
One of the most intriguing problems, in $q$-analogs of designs, is the existence question of an infinite family of $q$-analog of Steiner systems, known also as $q$-Steiner systems, (spreads not included) in general, and the existence question for the $q$-analog of the Fano plane, known also as the $q$-Fano plane, in particular. These questions are in the front line of open problems in block design. There was a common belief and a conjecture that such structures do not exist. Only recently, $q$-Steiner systems were found for one set of parameters. In this paper, a definition for the $q$-analog …
We commence the study of domination in the incidence graphs of combinatorial designs. Let $D$ be a combinatorial design and denote by $γ(D)$ the domination number of the incidence (Levy) graph of $D$. We obtain a number of results about the domination numbers of various kinds of designs. For instance, a finite projective plane of order $n$, which is a symmetric $(n^{2}+n+1,n+1,1)$-design, has $γ=2n$. %We also show that for any symmetric $(v,k,λ)$-design it holds that $γ\leq 2k$. We study at depth the domination numbers of Steiner systems and in particular of Steiner triple systems. We show tha…
By a famous result of Doyen, Hubaut and Vandensavel \cite{DHV}, the 2-rank of a Steiner triple system on $2^n-1$ points is at least $2^n -1 -n$, and equality holds only for the classical point-line design in the projective geometry $PG(n-1,2)$. It follows from results of Assmus \cite{A} that, given any integer $t$ with $1 \leq t \leq n-1$, there is a code $C_{n,t}$ containing representatives of all isomorphism classes of STS$(2^n-1)$ with 2-rank at most $2^n -1 -n + t$. Using a mixture of coding theoretic, geometric, design theoretic and combinatorial arguments, we prove a general formula for …
Given a $t$-$(v, k, λ)$ design, $\mathcal{D}=(X,\mathcal{B})$, a zero-sum $n$-flow of $\mathcal{D}$ is a map $f : \mathcal{B}\longrightarrow \{\pm1,\ldots, \pm(n-1)\}$ such that for any point $x\in X$, the sum of $f$ over all blocks incident with $x$ is zero. For a positive integer $k$, we find a zero-sum $k$-flow for an STS$(u w)$ and for an STS$(2v+7)$ for $v\equiv 1~(\mathrm{mod}~4)$, if there are STS$(u)$, STS$(w)$ and STS$(v)$ such that the STS$(u)$ and STS$(v)$ both have a zero-sum $k$-flow. In 2015, it was conjectured that for $v>7$ every STS$(v)$ admits a zero-sum $3$-flow. Here, it is…
A hypergraph $\mathcal{F}$ is non-trivial intersecting if every two edges in it have a nonempty intersection but no vertex is contained in all edges of $\mathcal{F}$. Mubayi and Verstraëte showed that for every $k \ge d+1 \ge 3$ and $n \ge (d+1)n/d$ every $k$-graph $\mathcal{H}$ on $n$ vertices without a non-trivial intersecting subgraph of size $d+1$ contains at most $\binom{n-1}{k-1}$ edges. They conjectured that the same conclusion holds for all $d \ge k \ge 4$ and sufficiently large $n$. We confirm their conjecture by proving a stronger statement. They also conjectured that for $m \ge 4$ a…

Block-transitive Steiner $t$-designs form a central part of the study of highly symmetric combinatorial configurations at the interface of several disciplines, including group theory, geometry, combinatorics, coding and information theory, and cryptography. The main result of the paper settles an important open question: There exist no non-trivial examples with $t=7$ (or larger). The proof is based on the classification of the finite 3-homogeneous permutation groups, itself relying on the finite simple group classification.
A Kirkman triple system of order $v$, KTS$(v)$, is a resolvable Steiner triple system on $v$ elements. In this paper, we investigate an open problem posed by Doug Stinson, namely the existence of KTS$(v)$ which contain as a subdesign a Steiner triple system of order $u$, an STS$(u)$. We present several different constructions for designs of this form. As a consequence, we completely settle the extremal case $v=2u+1$, for which a list of possible exceptions had remained for close to 30 years. Our new constructions also provide the first infinite classes for the more general problem. We reduce t…
