A perfect matroid design (PMD) is a matroid whose flats of the same rank all have the same size. In this paper we introduce the q-analogue of a PMD and its properties. In order to do so, we first establish a new cryptomorphic definition for q-matroids. We show that q-Steiner systems are examples of q-PMD's and we use this q-matroid structure to construct subspace designs from q-Steiner systems. We apply this construction to the only known q-Steiner system, which has parameters S(2,3,13;2), and hence establish the existence of a new subspace design with parameters 2-(13,4,5115;2).
We study the number of hamiltonian circuits, containing a fixed basis, and the number of hyperplanes, which do not contain a fixed basis in perfect matroid designs. Projective and affine finite geometries are considered as examples of such matroids. We give algorithms to find the hyperplanes and the hamiltonian circuits in such cases.
We investigate valuated matroids with an additional algebraic structure on their residue matroids. We encode the structure in terms of representability over stringent hyperfields. A hyperfield $H$ is {\em stringent} if $a\boxplus b$ is a singleton unless $a=-b$, for all $a,b\in H$. By a construction of Marc Krasner, each valued field gives rise to a stringent hyperfield. We show that if $H$ is a stringent skew hyperfield, then the vectors of any weak matroid over $H$ are orthogonal to its covectors, and we deduce that weak matroids over $H$ are strong matroids over $H$. Also, we present vector…
The notion of thin sums matroids was invented to extend the notion of representability to non-finitary matroids. A matroid is tame if every circuit-cocircuit intersection is finite. We prove that a tame matroid is a thin sums matroid over a finite field k if and only if all its finite minors are representable over k. We expect that the method we use to prove this will make it possible to lift many theorems about finite matroids representable over a finite field to theorems about tame thin sums matroids over these fields. We give three examples of this: various characterisations of binary tame …
It is proved that, for a prime number $p$, showing that an $n$-element matroid is not representable over $GF(p)$ requires only $O(n^2)$ rank evaluations.
A matroid is $\text{GF}(q)$-regular if it is representable over all proper superfields of the field $\text{GF}(q)$. We show that, for highly connected matroids having a large projective geometry over $\text{GF}(q)$ as a minor, the property of $\text{GF}(q)$-regularity is equivalent to representability over both $\text{GF}(q^2)$ and $\text{GF}(q^t)$ for some odd integer $t \geq 3$. We do this by means of an exact structural description of all such matroids.
A frame template over a field $\mathbb F$ describes the precise way in which a given $\mathbb F$-representable matroid is close to being a frame matroid. Our main result determines the maximum-rank projective or affine geometry that is described by a given frame template over a prime field. Subject to the matroid minors hypothesis of Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle, we use our result to determine, for each projective or affine geometry $N$ over a prime field $\mathbb F$, a best-possible upper bound on the number of elements in a simple $\mathbb F$-representable matroid $M$ of sufficiently large r…
In this work we present an algorithm to construct sparse-paving matroids over finite set $S$. From this algorithm we derive some useful bounds on the cardinality of the set of circuits of any Sparse-Paving matroids which allow us to prove in a simple way an asymptotic relation between the class of Sparse-paving matroids and the whole class of matroids. Additionally we introduce a matrix based method which render an explicit partition of the $r$-subsets of $S$, $\binom{S}{r}=\sqcup_{i=1}^{γ}\mathcal{U}_{i}$ such that each $\mathcal{U}_{i}$ defines a sparse-paving matroid of rank $r$.
We present a new type of equivalence for representable matroids that uses the automorphisms of the underlying matroid. Two $r\times n$ matrices $A$ and $A'$ representing the same matroid $M$ over a field $F$ are {\it geometrically equivalent representations} of $M$ if one can be obtained from the other by elementary row operations, column scaling, and column permutations. Using geometric equivalence, we give a method for exhaustively generating non-isomorphic matroids representable over a finite field $GF(q)$, where $q$ is a power of a prime.
We study realization spaces of matroids over hyperfields (in the sense of Baker and Bowler). More precisely, given a matroid M and a hyperfield H we determine the space of all H-matroids over M. This can be seen as the matroid stratum of the hyperfield Grassmannians in the sense of Anderson and Davis. We give different descriptions of these realization spaces (e.g., in terms of Tutte groups or projective classes), allowing for explicit computations. When the hyperfield at hand is topological, the realization spaces have a natural topology. In this case, our models carry the correct homeomorphi…
We study the problem of optimizing nonlinear objective functions over matroids presented by oracles or explicitly. Such functions can be interpreted as the balancing of multi-criteria optimization. We provide a combinatorial polynomial time algorithm for arbitrary oracle-presented matroids, that makes repeated use of matroid intersection, and an algebraic algorithm for vectorial matroids. Our work is partly motivated by applications to minimum-aberration model-fitting in experimental design in statistics, which we discuss and demonstrate in detail.
We show how the set of Dyck paths of length 2n naturally gives rise to a matroid, which we call the "Catalan matroid" C_n. We describe this matroid in detail; among several other results, we show that C_n is self-dual, it is representable over the rationals but not over finite fields F_q with q < n-1, and it has a nice Tutte polynomial. We then generalize our construction to obtain a family of matroids, which we call "shifted matroids". They arose independently and almost simultaneously in the work of Klivans, who showed that they are precisely the matroids whose independence complex is a shif…
We explore a combinatorial theory of linear dependency in complex space, "complex matroids", with foundations analogous to those for oriented matroids. We give multiple equivalent axiomatizations of complex matroids, showing that this theory captures properties of linear dependency, orthogonality, and determinants over C in much the same way that oriented matroids capture the same properties over R. In addition, our complex matroids come with a canonical circle action analogous to the action of C* on a complex vector space. Our phirotopes (analogues of determinants) are the same as those studi…
In this paper, we give a cancellation-free antipode formula for the matroid-minor Hopf algebra. We then explore applications of this formula. For example, the cancellation-free formula expresses the antipode of uniform matroids as a sum over certain ordered set partitions. We also prove that all matroids over any hyperfield (in the sense of Baker and Bowler) have cancellation-free antipode formulas; furthermore, the cancellations in the antipode are independent of the hyperfield structure and only depend on the underlying matroid.
The Assmus-Mattson theorem gives a way to identify block designs arising from codes. This result was broadened to matroids and weighted designs. In this work we present a further two-fold generalisation: first from matroids to polymatroids and also from sets to vector spaces. To achieve this, we introduce the characteristic polynomial of a $q$-polymatroid and outline several of its properties.
We extend the notion of representation of a matroid to algebraic structures that we call skew partial fields. Our definition of such representations extends Tutte's definition, using chain groups. We show how such representations behave under duality and minors, we extend Tutte's representability criterion to this new class, and we study the generator matrices of the chain groups. An example shows that the class of matroids representable over a skew partial field properly contains the class of matroids representable over a skew field. Next, we show that every multilinear representation of a ma…
Every bi-uniform matroid is representable over all sufficiently large fields. But it is not known exactly over which finite fields they are representable, and the existence of efficient methods to find a representation for every given bi-uniform matroid has not been proved. The interest of these problems is due to their implications to secret sharing. The existence of efficient methods to find representations for all bi-uniform matroids is proved here for the first time. The previously known efficient constructions apply only to a particular class of bi-uniform matroids, while the known genera…
It is proved that for each prime field $GF(p)$, there is an integer $f(p)$ such that a 4-connected matroid has at most $f(p)$ inequivalent representations over $GF(p)$. We also prove a stronger theorem that obtains the same conclusion for matroids satisfying a connectivity condition, intermediate between 3-connectivity and 4-connectivity that we term "$k$-coherence". We obtain a variety of other results on inequivalent representations including the following curious one. For a prime power $q$, let ${\mathcal R}(q)$ denote the set of matroids representable over all fields with at least $q$ elem…
A fundamental theorem of matroid theory establishes that a transversal matroid is representable over fields of any characteristic. It was proved in 1970 by Piff and Welsh: their proof is elegant and concise and, moveover, constructive. However it is far from being algorithmic, in terms of suggesting a step-by-step procedure for deriving a collection of vectors over a given base field representing the transversal matroid induced by a given set system. In this note we recast Piff and Welsh's proof in algorithmic form.

To each linear code over a finite field we associate the matroid of its parity check matrix. We show to what extent one can determine the generalized Hamming weights of the code (or defined for a matroid in general) from various sets of Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes associated to the matroid.
For any minor-closed class of matroids over a fixed finite field, we state an exact structural characterization for the sufficiently connected matroids in the class. We also state a number of conjectures that might be approachable using the structural characterization.
We show that, if $α> 0$ is a real number, $n \ge 2$ and $\ell \ge 2$ are integers, and $q$ is a prime power, then every simple matroid $M$ of sufficiently large rank, with no $U_{2,\ell}$-minor, no rank-$n$ projective geometry minor over a larger field than $\GF(q)$, and satisfying $|M| \ge αq^{r(M)}$, has a rank-$n$ affine geometry restriction over $\GF(q)$. This result can be viewed as an analogue of the Multidimensional Density Hales-Jewett Theorem for matroids.

Dowling and Rhodes defined different lattices on the set of triples (Subset, Partition, Cross Section) over a fixed finite group G. Although the Rhodes lattice is not a geometric lattice, it defines a matroid in the sense of the theory of Boolean representable simplicial complexes. This turns out to be the direct sum of a complete matroid with a lift matroid of the complete biased graph over G. As is well known, the Dowling lattice defines the frame matroid over a similar biased graph. This gives a new perspective on both matroids and also an application of matroid theory to the theory of fini…
There exist several theorems which state that when a matroid is representable over distinct fields F_1,...,F_k, it is also representable over other fields. We prove a theorem, the Lift Theorem, that implies many of these results. First, parts of Whittle's characterization of representations of ternary matroids follow from our theorem. Second, we prove the following theorem by Vertigan: if a matroid is representable over both GF(4) and GF(5), then it is representable over the real numbers by a matrix such that the absolute value of the determinant of every nonsingular square submatrix is a powe…
Let ${\bf A}={\bf A}_{n,m,k}$ be a random $n\times m$ matrix over $\mathbf{GF}_2$ wher each column consists of $k$ randomly chosen ones. Let $M$ be an arbirary fixed binary matroid. We show that if $m/n$ and $k$ are sufficiently large then as $n\to\infty$ the binary matroid induced by {\bf A} contains $M$ as a minor.
Pastures are a class of field-like algebraic objects which include both partial fields hyperfields and have nice categorical properties. We prove several lift theorems for representations of matroids over pastures, including a generalization of Pendavingh and van Zwam's Lift Theorem for partial fields. By embedding the earlier theory into a more general framework, we are able to establish new results even in the case of lifts of partial fields, for example the conjecture of Pendavingh--van Zwam that their lift construction is idempotent. We give numerous applications to matroid representations…
We prove that for each prime power $q$ there is an integer $n$ such that if $M$ is a $3$-connected, representable matroid with a PG$(n-1,q)$-minor and no $U_{2,q^2+1}$-minor, then $M$ is representable over GF$(q)$. We also show that for $\ell >= 2$, if $M$ is a $3$-connected, representable matroid of sufficiently high rank with no $U_{2,\ell+2}$-minor and $|E(M)| \geq (4\ell)^{r(M)/2}$, then $M$ is representable over a field of order at most $\ell$.
In this paper we address two of the major foundational questions in the theory of matroids over rings. First, we provide a cryptomorphic axiomatisation, by introducing an analogue of the base polytope for matroids. Second, we describe a parameter space for matroids over a valuation ring, which turns out to be a tropical version of the Bott-Samelson varieties for the full flag variety. Thus a matroid over a valuation ring is a sequence of flags of tropical linear spaces a.k.a. valuated matroids.
Recently, M.~Baker and N.~Bowler introduced the notion of matroids over hyperfields as a unifying theory of various generalizations of matroids. In this paper we generalize the notion of minors and direct sums from ordinary matroids to matroids over hyperfields. Using this we generalize the classical construction of matroid-minor Hopf algebras to the case of matroids over hyperfields.
We introduce the notion of a matroid M over a commutative ring R, assigning to every subset of the ground set an R-module according to some axioms. When R is a field, we recover matroids. When R=$\mathbb{Z}$, and when R is a DVR, we get (structures which contain all the data of) quasi-arithmetic matroids, and valuated matroids i.e. tropical linear spaces, respectively. More generally, whenever R is a Dedekind domain, we extend all the usual properties and operations holding for matroids (e.g., duality), and we explicitly describe the structure of the matroids over R. Furthermore, we compute th…
Matroids over tracts provide an algebraic framework simultaneously generalizing the notions of matroids, oriented matroids, and valuated matroids, presented by Baker and Bowler. Pendavingh partially extended this theory to skew hyperfields and presented a new axiom system in terms of quasi-Plücker coordinates. We present a theory of matroids over skew tracts, which generalizes both the theory of matroids over tracts and the theory of weak matroids over skew hyperfields developed by Pendavingh. We give several cryptomorphic axiom systems for such matroids in terms of circuits, quasi-Plücker coo…
We enrich Baker and Bowler's theory of matroids over tracts with notions of vectors and covectors. In the case of oriented matroids, these $F$-vectors and $F$-covectors coincide with the usual signed vectors and signed covectors. In the case of matroids over a field $F$, the $F$-covector set resp. $F$-vector set of an $F$-matroid is a linear subspace of $F^E$ resp. its orthogonal complement.
In this paper we give a necessary and sufficient criterion for representability of a matroid over an algebraic closed field. This leads to an algorithm, based on an extension of Groebner Bases, in order to decide if a given matroid is representable over such a field.
We generalise the construction of infinite matroids from trees of matroids to allow the matroids at the nodes, as well as the field over which they are represented, to be infinite.
We develop the theory of matroids over one-dimensional algebraic groups, with special emphasis on positive characteristic. In particular, we compute the Lindström valuations and Frobenius flocks of such matroids. Building on work by Evans and Hrushovski, we show that the class of algebraic matroids, paired with their Lindström valuations, is not closed under duality of valuated matroids.
We present an algebraic framework which simultaneously generalizes the notion of linear subspaces, matroids, valuated matroids, oriented matroids, and regular matroids. To do this, we first introduce algebraic objects called tracts which generalize both hyperfields in the sense of Krasner and partial fields in the sense of Semple and Whittle. We then define matroids over tracts; in fact, there are (at least) two natural notions of matroid in this general context, which we call weak and strong matroids. We give "cryptomorphic" axiom systems for such matroids in terms of circuits, Grassmann-Plüc…
Classical designs and their (projective) q-analogs can both be viewed as designs in matroids, using the matroid of all subsets of a set and the matroid of linearly independent subsets of a vector space, respectively. Another natural matroid is given by the point sets in general position of an affine space, leading to the concept of an affine design. Accordingly, a t-(n, k, $λ$) affine design of order q is a collection B of (k-1)-dimensional spaces in the affine geometry A = AG(n-1, q) such that each (t-1)-dimensional space in A is contained in exactly $λ$ spaces of B. In the case $λ$ = 1, as u…
We present an algebraic framework which simultaneously generalizes the notion of linear subspaces, matroids, valuated matroids, and oriented matroids. We call the resulting objects matroids over hyperfields. In fact, there are (at least) two natural notions of matroid in this context, which we call weak and strong matroids. We give "cryptomorphic" axiom systems for such matroids in terms of circuits, Grassmann-Plucker functions, and dual pairs, and establish some basic duality theorems. We also show that if F is a doubly distributive hyperfield then the notions of weak and strong matroid over …
We extend the notion of matroid representations by matrices over fields and consider new representations of matroids by matrices over finite semirings, more precisely over the boolean and the superboolean semirings. This idea of representations is generalized naturally to include also hereditary collections. We show that a matroid that can be directly decomposed as matroids, each of which is representable over a field, has a boolean representation, and more generally that any arbitrary hereditary collection is superboolean-representable.
Path-width of matroids naturally generalizes the better known parameter of path-width for graphs, and is NP-hard by a reduction from the graph case. While the term matroid path-width was formally introduced by Geelen-Gerards-Whittle [JCTB 2006] in pure matroid theory, it was soon recognized by Kashyap [SIDMA 2008] that it is the same concept as long-studied so called trellis complexity in coding theory, later named trellis-width, and hence it is an interesting notion also from the algorithmic perspective. It follows from a result of Hlineny [JCTB 2006] that the decision problem, whether a give…
We show that a field extension $K\subseteq L$ in positive characteristic $p$ and elements $x_e\in L$ for $e\in E$ gives rise to a matroid $M^σ$ on ground set $E$ with coefficients in a certain skew hyperfield $L^σ$. This skew hyperfield $L^σ$ is defined in terms of $L$ and its Frobenius action $σ:x\mapsto x^p$. The matroid underlying $M^σ$ describes the algebraic dependencies over $K$ among the $x_e\in L$ , and $M^σ$ itself comprises, for each $m\in \mathbb{Z}^E$, the space of $K$-derivations of $K\left(x_e^{p^{m_e}}: e\in E\right)$. The theory of matroid representation over hyperfields was de…
