The temperature dependent resistivity of two Pr1-xCaxMnO3 (x=0.5 and 0.4) thin films grown on LaAlO3 has been studied as a function of hydrostatic pressure (up to 2.5 GPa) and magnetic field (up to 9T). Both samples show a monotonic decrease in the resistivity with an increase in pressure, corresponding to a change of -35% at 2.5 GPa. No pressure induced metal-to-insulator transition was observed in the temperature-dependent resistivity. The non-trivial interaction between high pressure and magnetic field reveals that the effect of pressure cannot be simply rescaled to that of a specific field, as has been reported for the corresponding bulk material. We propose an interpretation of the data based on phase separation, where two different insulating phases coexist: the charge ordered phase, which is sensitive to both magnetic field and pressure, and a second insulating phase that can be tuned by magnetic field. Such a result demonstrates that phase separation can be manipulated in thin films by independent application of magnetic field and/or external pressure.
Metal-insulator transition is observed in the La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 thin films with thickness larger than 5 unit cells. Insulating phase at lower temperature appeared in the ultrathin films with thickness ranging from 6 unit cells to 10 unit cells and it is found that the Mott variable range hopping conduction dominates in this insulating phase at low temperature with a decrease of localization length in thinner films. A deficiency of oxygen content and a resulted decrease of the Mn valence have been observed in the ultrathin films with thickness smaller than or equal to 10 unit cells by studying the…
Using a spatiotemporal terahertz radiation imaging technique, we visualize photogenerated metallic inhomogeneity in the charge-ordered insulating phase of Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ thin film. We reveal that photogenerated metallic regions with micrometer length scales within the charge-ordered insulating matrix are created on subpicoseond time scales. Such an inhomogeneity becomes homogeneous when the laser power and bias voltage are increased. The observed photogenerated metallic regions would act as nucleus of the insulator-metal transition observed in Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$.
Here we demonstrate the controlled growth of Bi(110) and Bi(111) films on an (insulating) $α$-Al$_2$O$_3$(0001) substrate by surface X-ray diffraction and X-ray reflectivity using synchrotron radiation. At temperatures as low as 40 K, unanticipated pseudo-cubic Bi(110) films are grown having a thickness ranging from a few to tens of nanometers. The roughness at the film-vacuum as well as at the film-substrate interface, can be reduced by mild heating, where a crystallographic orientation transition of Bi(110) towards Bi(111) is observed at 400 K. From 450 K onwards high quality and ultrasmooth…
High-quality thin films of the ferromagnetic-insulator europium(II) sulfide (EuS) were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition on Al2O3 (0001) and Si (100) substrates. A single orientation was obtained with the [100] planes parallel to the substrates, with atomic-scale smoothness indicates a near-ideal surface topography. The films exhibit uniform ferromagnetism below 15.9 K, with a substantial component of the magnetization perpendicular to the plane of the films. Optimization of the growth condition also yielded truly insulating films with immeasurably large resistance. This combination of mag…
This work focuses on the low frequency Drude response of bulk-insulating topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ films. The frequency and field dependence of the mobility and carrier density are measured simultaneously via time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. These films are grown on buffer layers, capped by Se, and have been exposed in air for months. Under a magnetic field up to 7 Tesla, we observe prominent cyclotron resonances (CRs). We attribute the sharp CR to two different topological surface states (TSSs) from both surfaces of the films. The CR sharpens at high fields due to an electron-impu…
By means of quasiparticle-energy calculations in the G0W0 approach, we show for the prototypical insulator/semiconductor system NaCl/Ge(001) that polarization effects at the interfaces noticeably affect the excitation spectrum of molecules adsorbed on the surface of the NaCl films. The magnitude of the effect can be controlled by varying the thickness of the film, offering new opportunities for tuning electronic excitations in e.g. molecular electronics or quantum transport. Polarization effects are visible even for the excitation spectrum of the NaCl films themselves, which has important impl…
Electronic states of a correlated material can be effectively modified by structural variations delivered from a single-crystal substrate. In this letter, we show that the CrN films grown on MgO (001) substrates have a (001) orientation, whereas the CrN films on α-Al2O3 (0001) substrates are oriented along (111) direction parallel to the surface normal. Transport properties of CrN films are remarkably different depending on crystallographic orientations. The critical thickness for the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in CrN 111 films is significantly larger than that of CrN 001 films. In contr…
This paper shows that the oxygen vacancies observed experimentally in thin films of LaCoO3 subject to tensile strain are thermodynamically stable according to ab initio calculations. By using DFT calculations, we show that oxygen vacancies on the order of 6 % forming chains perpendicular to the (001) direction are more stable than the stoichiometric solution. These lead to magnetic Co2+ ions surrounding the vacancies that couple ferromagnetically. The remaining Co3+ cations in an octahedral environment are non magnetic. The gap leading to a ferromagnetic insulating phase occurs naturally and w…
Using first-principles calculations, we predict a Chern insulating phase in thin films of the ferromagnetic semi-metal GdN. In contrast to previously proposed Chern insulator candidates, which mostly rely on honeycomb lattices, this system affords a great chance to realize the quantum anomalous Hall Effect on a square lattice without either a magnetic substrate or transition metal doping, making synthesis easier. The band inversion between 5d-orbitals of Gd and 2p-orbitals of N is verified by first-principles calculation based on density functional theory, and the band gap can be as large as 1…
Silicene, a new two-dimensional (2D) material has attracted intense research because of the ubiquitous use of silicon in modern technology. However, producing free-standing silicene has proved to be a huge challenge. Until now, silicene could be synthesized only on metal surfaces where it naturally forms strong interactions with the metal substrate that modify its electronic properties. Here, we report the first experimental evidence of silicene sheet on an insulating NaCl thin film. This work represents a major breakthrough; for the study of the intrinsic properties of silicene, and by extens…
We observe a dependence of the damping of a confined mode of precessing ferromagnetic magnetization on the size of the mode. The micron-scale mode is created within an extended, unpatterned YIG film by means of the intense local dipolar field of a micromagnetic tip. We find that damping of the confined mode scales like the surface-to-volume ratio of the mode, indicating an interfacial damping effect (similar to spin pumping) due to the transfer of angular momentum from the confined mode to the spin sink of ferromagnetic material in the surrounding film. Though unexpected for insulating systems…
The correlated electron system SmNiO3 exhibits a metal-insulator phase transition at 130 °C. Using an ionic liquid as an electric double layer (EDL) gate on three-terminal ultrathin SmNiO3 devices, we investigate gate control of the channel resistance and transition temperature. Resistance reduction is observed across both insulating and metallic phases with ~25% modulation at room temperature. We show that resistance modulation is predominantly due to electrostatic charge accumulation and not electrochemical doping by control experiments in inert and air en-vironments. We model the resistance…
Among the recent discoveries of domain wall functionalities, the observation of electrical conduction at ferroelectric domain walls in the multiferroic insulator BiFeO3 has opened exciting new possibilities. Here, we report evidence of electrical conduction also at 180° ferroelectric domain walls in the simpler tetragonal ferroelectric PZT thin films. The observed conduction shows nonlinear, asymmetric current-voltage characteristics, thermal activation at high temperatures and high stability. We relate this behavior to the microscopic structure of the domain walls, allowing local defects segr…
In general, it is difficult to access the thermal conductivity of thin insulating films experimentally just by electrical means. Here, we present a new approach utilizing the tunnel magneto-Seebeck effect (TMS) in combination with finite-element modeling (FEM). We detect the laser-induced TMS and the absolute thermovoltage of laser-heated magnetic tunnel junctions with 2.6 nm thin barriers of MgAl$_2$O$_4$ (MAO) and MgO, respectively. A second measurement of the absolute thermovoltage after a dielectric breakdown of the barrier grants insight into the remaining thermovoltage of the stack. Thus…
By combining genetic algorithm optimizations, first-principles calculations and the double-exchange model studies, we have unveiled that the exotic insulating ferromagnetism in LaMnO3 thin film originates from the previously unreported G-type d_{3z^2-r^2}/d_{x^2-y^2} orbital ordering. An insulating gap opens as a result of both the orbital ordering and the strong electron-phonon coupling. Therefore, there exist two strain induced phase transitions in the LaMnO3 thin film, from the insulating A-type antiferromagnetic phase to the insulating ferromagnetic phase and then to the metallic ferromagn…
We present experimental control of the magnetic anisotropy in a gadolinium iron garnet (GdIG) thin film from in-plane to perpendicular anisotropy by simply changing the sample temperature. The magnetic hysteresis loops obtained by SQUID magnetometry measurements unambiguously reveal a change of the magnetically easy axis from out-of-plane to in-plane depending on the sample temperature. Additionally, we confirm these findings by the use of temperature dependent broadband ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy (FMR). In order to determine the effective magnetization, we utilize the intrinsic adva…
Magnetic insulators with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) play a key role in exploring pure spin current phenomena and developing ultralow-dissipation spintronic devices, thereby it is highly desirable to develop new material platforms. Here we report epitaxial growth of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO)-SrIrO3 (SIO) composite oxide films (LSMIO) with different crystalline orientations fabricated by sequential two-target ablation process using pulsed laser deposition. The LSMIO films exhibit high crystalline quality with homogeneous mixture of LSMO and SIO at atomic level. Ferrimagnetic and …
Using conductive atomic force microscopy, we observed non-uniform distributions of metallic and insulating domains on the surface of a single crystalline (La0.4Pr0.6)0.67Ca0.33MnO3 film grown on a (110) NdGaO3 substrate. The electronic properties of the surface exhibit thermal hysteresis. The hysteresis is similar to that of the transport and magnetism of the film bulk.
The electrical conductance of molecular beam epitaxial Bi on BaF2(111) was measured as a function of both film thickness (4-540 nm) and temperature (5-300 K). Unlike bulk Bi as a prototype semimetal, the Bi thin films up to 90 nm are found to be insulating in the interiors but metallic on the surfaces. This result has not only resolved unambiguously the long controversy about the existence of semimetal-semiconductor transition in Bi thin film but also provided a straightforward interpretation for the long-puzzled temperature dependence of the resistivity of Bi thin films, which in turn might s…
Using density functional calculations we have examined the evolution of the electronic structure of SrRuO3 films grown on SrTiO3 substrates as a function of film thickness. At the ultrathin limit of two monolayers (RuO2-terminated surface) the films are found to be at the brink of a spin-state transition which drives the system to an antiferromagnetic and insulating state. Increasing the film thickness to four monolayers, one finds the surprising result that two entirely different solutions coexist. An antiferromagnetic insulating solution coexists with a metallic solution corresponding to an …
We investigate the crystal structure, transport and magnetic properties of Fe-doped ferromagnetic semiconductor (Al1-x,Fex)Sb thin films up to x = 14% grown by molecular beam epitaxy. All the samples show p-type conduction at room temperature and insulating behavior at low temperature. The (Al1-x,Fex)Sb thin films with x lower or equal to 10% maintain the zinc blende crystal structure of the host material AlSb. The (Al1-x,Fex)Sb thin film with x = 10% shows intrinsic ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature (TC) of 40 K. In the (Al1-x,Fex)Sb thin film with x = 14%, a sudden drop of mobility and…
We present a study of the thickness dependence of magnetism and electrical conductivity in ultra thin La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 films grown on SrTiO3 (110) substrates. We found a critical thickness of 10 unit cells below which the conductivity of the films disappeared and simultaneously the Curie temperature (TC) increased, indicating a magnetic insulating phase at room temperature. These samples have a TC of about 560 K with a significant saturation magnetization of 1.2 +- 0.2 muB/Mn. The canted antiferromagnetic insulating phase in ultra thin films of n< 10 coincides with the occurrence of a higher s…
Magnetic insulators are important materials for a range of next generation memory and spintronic applications. Structural constraints in this class of devices generally require a clean heterointerface that allows effective magnetic coupling between the insulating layer and the conducting layer. However, there are relatively few examples of magnetic insulators which can be synthesized with surface qualities that would allow these smooth interfaces and precisely tuned interfacial magnetic exchange coupling which might be applicable at room temperature. In this work, we demonstrate an example of …
The field of oxide spintronics can strongly benefit from the establishment of robust ferromagnetic insulators with near room-temperature Curie temperature. Here we investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of atomically-precise epitaxially-strained thin films of the double perovskite La$_2$NiMnO$_6$ (LNMO) grown by off-axis radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. We find that the films retain both a strong insulating behavior and a bulk-like Curie temperature in the order of 280 K, nearly independently from epitaxial strain conditions. These results suggest a prospective im…
We present electrical conductance measurements on amorphous NbSi insulating thin films. These films display out-of equilibrium electronic features that are markedly different from what has been reported so far in disordered insulators. Like in the most studied systems (indium oxide and granular Al films), a slow relaxation of the conductance is observed after a quench to liquid helium temperature which gives rise to the growth of a memory dip in MOSFET devices. But unlike in these systems, this memory dip and the related conductance relaxations are still visible up to room temperature, with cl…
A simplified density functional theory (DFT) method for charged adsorbates on an ultrathin, insulating film supported by a metal substrate is developed and presented. This new method is based on a previous DFT development that uses a perfect conductor (PC) model to approximate the electrostatic response of the metal substrate, while the film and the adsorbate are both treated fully within DFT [I. Scivetti and M. Persson, Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter 25, 355006 (2013)]. The missing interactions between the metal substrate and the insulating film in the PC approximation are modelled by a…
In this paper we have created a strain driven single crystal like ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) state in a PLD grown thin film of low doped LCMO(X = 0.15)on NGO(100) substrate and make a thorough study of strain effects on the electric and magnetic transport of this film. We have studied and compared the FMI state, ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC), ferromagnetic insulating temperature (TFMI) and the resistivity of the film in details with bulk single crystals of X=0.18 to 0.22 doping region. We have found that TFMI and the localisation length of the carriers are increased and there i…
The conductance confined at the interface of complex oxide heterostructures provides new opportunities to explore nanoelectronic as well as nanoionic devices. Herein we show that metallic interfaces can be realized in SrTiO3-based heterostructures with various insulating overlayers of amorphous LaAlO3, SrTiO3 and yttria-stabilized zirconia films. On the other hand, samples of amorphous La7/8Sr1/8MnO3 films on SrTiO3 substrates remain insulating. The interfacial conductivity results from the formation of oxygen vacancies near the interface, suggesting that the redox reactions on the surface of …
Graphene has been predicted to develop a magnetic moment by proximity effect when placed on a ferromagnetic film, a promise that could open exciting possibilities in the fields of spintronics and magnetic data recording. In this work, we study in detail the interplay between the magnetoresistance of graphene and the magnetization of an underlying ferromagnetic insulating film. A clear correlation between both magnitudes is observed but we find, through a careful modelling of the magnetization and the weak localization measurements, that such correspondence can be explained by the effects of th…
At ambient pressure, bulk SrCoO$_{3}$ is a ferromagnetic (FM) metal in cubic perovskite structure. By contrast, magnetic properties of epitaxial SrCoO$_{3}$ thin films, especially at high tensile strain ($\varepsilon \gtrsim 3$\%), remain unclear: Previous calculations had predicted antiferromagnetic (AFM) states more energetically favorable in this regime, but recent experiments indicated a FM insulating state. In this work, using first-principles calculations, we perform an extensive search for the structural, spin, magnetic, and orbital states of SrCoO$_{3}$ thin films. Our calculations ind…
We report polymer composite films containing fillers comprised of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals materials, specifically transition metal trichalcogenides containing 1D structural motifs that enable their exfoliation into bundles of atomic threads. These nanostructures are characterized by extremely large aspect ratios of up to 10^6. The polymer composites with low loadings of quasi-1D TaSe3 fillers (below 3 vol. %) revealed excellent electromagnetic interference shielding in the X-band GHz and EHF sub-THz frequency ranges, while remaining DC electrically insulating. The unique elect…
With local density approximation + Hubbard $U$ (LDA+$U$) calculations, we show that the ferromagnetic (FM) insulating state observed in tensile-strained LaCoO$_3$ epitaxial thin films is most likely a mixture of low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) Co, namely, a HS/LS mixture state. Compared with other FM states, including the intermediate-spin (IS) state (\textit{metallic} within LDA+$U$), which consists of IS Co only, and the insulating IS/LS mixture state, the HS/LS state is the most favorable one. The FM order in HS/LS state is stabilized via the superexchange interactions between adjacent LS …
The surface termination of (100)-oriented LaAlO3 (LAO) single crystals was examined by atomic force microscopy and optimized to produce a single-terminated atomically flat surface by annealing. Then the atomically flat STO film was achieved on a single-terminated LAO substrate, which is expected to be similar to the n-type interface of two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), i.e., (LaO)-(TiO2). Particularly, that can serve as a mirror structure for the typical 2DEG heterostructure to further clarify the origin of 2DEG. This newly developed interface was determined to be highly insulating. Additio…
We demonstrate that surface morphogenesis in compressed thin films may result from spatially correlated plastic activity. A soft glassy film strongly adhering to a smooth and rigid substrate and subjected to uniaxial compression, indeed, does not undergo any global elastic pattern-forming instability, but responds plastically via localized burst events that self-organize, leading to the emergence of a series of parallel ridges transverse to the compression axis. This phenomenon has been completely overlooked, but results from common features of the plastic response of glasses, hence should be …
Topological insulators represent a novel state of matter with surface charge carriers having a massless Dirac dispersion and locked helical spin polarization. Many exciting experiments have been proposed by theory, yet, their execution have been hampered by the extrinsic conductivity associated with the unavoidable presence of defects in Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ bulk single crystals as well as impurities on their surfaces. Here we present the preparation of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ thin films that are insulating in the bulk and the four-point probe measurement of the conductivity of the Dirac states …
We studied the electronic and magnetic dynamics of ferromagnetic insulating BaFeO3 thin films by using pump-probe time-resolved resonant x-ray reflectivity at the Fe 2p edge. By changing the excitation density, we found two distinctly different types of demagnetization with a clear threshold behavior. We assigned the demagnetization change from slow (~ 150 ps) to fast (< 70 ps) to a transition into a metallic state induced by laser excitation. These results provide a novel approach for locally tuning magnetic dynamics. In analogy to heat assisted magnetic recording, metallization can locally t…
In ideal topological insulator (TI) films the bulk state, which is supposed to be insulating, should not provide any electric coupling between the two metallic surfaces. However, transport studies on existing TI films show that the topological states on opposite surfaces are electrically tied to each other at thicknesses far greater than the direct coupling limit where the surface wavefunctions overlap. Here, we show that as the conducting bulk channels are suppressed, the parasitic coupling effect diminishes and the decoupled surface channels emerge as expected for ideal TIs. In Bi2Se3 thin f…
Insulating uniaxial room-temperature ferromagnets are a prerequisite for commonplace spin wave-based devices, the obstacle in contemporary ferromagnets being the coupling of ferromagnetism with large conductivity. We show that the uniaxial $A^{1+2x}$Ti$^{4+}$$_{1-x}$O$_3$ (ATO), $A=$Ni$^{2+}$,Co$^{2+}$ and $0.6<x \leq 1$, thin films are electrically insulating ferromagnets already at room-temperature. The octahedra network of the ATO and ilmenite structures are similar yet different octahedra-filling proved to be a route to switch from the antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic regime. Octahedra c…
Here we study the kinetics of liquefaction and solidification of thin bismuth films grown on the insulating substrate by the pulsed laser deposited (PLD) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and investigated by in situ electron and X-ray diffraction. By PLD, we can grow films similar to those obtained using MBE, studied by ex-situ AFM, KPFM, XRR, and XRD. The liquefaction-solidification transition is monitored in real-time by RHEED and synchrotron XRD, resulting in a dewetting phenomenon and the formation of spherical droplets which size depends on the initial film thickness. Studying this phase t…
We report the ultrafast, (sub)picosecond reduction of the antiferromagnetic order of the insulating NiO thin film in a Pt/NiO bilayer. This reduction of the antiferromagnetic order is not present in pure NiO thin films after a strong optical excitation. This ultrafast phenomenon is attributed to an ultrafast and highly efficient energy transfer from the optically excited electron system of the Pt layer into the NiO spin system. We propose that this energy transfer is mediated by a stochastic exchange scattering of hot Pt electrons at the Pt/NiO interface.
We have identified epitaxially grown elemental Te as a capping material that is suited to protect the topological surface states of intrinsically insulating Bi$_2$Te$_3$. By using angle-resolved photoemission, we were able to show that the Te overlayer leaves the dispersive bands of the surface states intact and that it does not alter the chemical potential of the Bi$_2$Te$_3$ thin film. From in-situ four-point contact measurements, we observed that the conductivity of the capped film is still mainly determined by the metallic surface states and that the contribution of the capping layer is mi…
Graphene-based heterostructures are a promising material system for designing the topologically nontrivial Chern insulating devices. Recently, a two-dimensional (2D) monolayer ferromagnetic insulator CrI$_{3}$ was successfully synthesized in experiments [Huang et al., Nature 546, 270 (2017)]. Here, these two interesting materials are proposed to build a heterostructure (Gr/CrI$_{3}$). Our first-principles calculations show that the system forms a van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure, relatively facilely fabricated in experiments. A Chern insulating state is acquired in the Gr/CrI$_{3}$ heterost…
We report the growth of highly c-axis oriented topological insulator (TI) BiSbTe1.5Se1.5 (BSTS) thin films by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. The various growth parameters such as substrate temperature, Argon pressure in the deposition chamber and target to substrate distance are tuned to obtain the optimized conditions essential for stoichiometric and bulk insulating TI thin films. These films are highly c-axis oriented and exhibit all the four Raman modes characteristic to the R-3m space group. The quality of the deposited thin films is investigated using X-ray diffraction for cryst…
Several SrTiO3 (STO) thin films without electrodes processed by pulsed laser deposition, of thicknesses down to 40 nm, were studied using infrared transmission and reflection spectroscopy. The complex dielectric responses of polar phonon modes, particularly ferroelectric soft mode, in the films were determined quantitatively. The compressed epitaxial STO films on (100) La0.18Sr0.82Al0.59-Ta0.41O3 substrates (strain 0.9%) show strongly stiffened phonon responses, whereas the soft mode in polycrystalline film on (0001) sapphire substrate shows a strong broadening due to grain boundaries and/or o…
Here we examine the role of the amorphous insulating substrate in the thermal relaxation in thin NbN, InO$_x$, and Au/Ni films at temperatures above 5 K. The studied samples are made up of metal bridges on an amorphous insulating layer lying on or suspended above a crystalline substrate. Noise thermometry was used to measure the electron temperature $T_e$ of the films as a function of Joule power per unit of area $P_{2D}$. In all samples, we observe the dependence $P_{2D}\propto T_e^n$ with the exponent $n\simeq 2$, which is inconsistent with both electron-phonon coupling and Kapitza thermal r…
The ultrathin film limit has been shown to be a rich playground for unusual low dimensional physics. Taking the example of SrRuO$_3$ which is ferromagnetic and metallic at the bulk limit, one finds that it becomes antiferromagnetic and insulating at the three monolayers limit when grown on SrTiO$_3$. The origin of the insulating state is traced to strongly orbital dependent exchange splittings. A modest compressive strain of 1% of the SrTiO$_3$ substrate is then found to drive the system into a highly confined two-dimensional 100% spin polarized metallic state. This metal-insulator transition …
We show that applying strain on half-doped manganites makes it possible to tune the system to the proximity of a metal-insulator transition and thereby generate a colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) response. This phase competition not only allows control of CMR in ferromagnetic metallic manganites but can be used to generate CMR response in otherwise robust insulators at half-doping. Further, from our realistic microscopic model of strain and magnetotransport calculations within the Kubo formalism, we demonstrate a striking result of strain engineering that, under tensile strain, a ferromagnetic…
This work reports a systematic study of the evolution of charge transport mechanism in granular ultra-thin films of palladium of thickness varying between 6nm and 2nm. While the films with thickness > 4nm exhibit metallic behaviour, that at 3nm thickness undergoes a metal-insulator transition at 19.5K. In contrast, the 2nm thick film remained insulating at all temperatures. with transport following Mott's variable range hopping. At room temperature, while the thicker film exhibit resistance decrease on H$_2$ exposure. the insulating film showed an anomalous initial resistance increase before s…
