We define and solve Volterra equations driven by an irregular signal, by means of a variant of the rough path theory called algebraic integration. In the Young case, that is for a driving signal with Hölder exponent greater than 1/2, we obtain a global solution, and are able to handle the case of a singular Volterra coefficient. In case of a driving signal with Hölder exponent in (1/3,1/2], we get a local existence and uniqueness theorem. The results are easily applied to the fractional Brownian motion with Hurst coefficient H>1/3.
Based on the recent development of the framework of Volterra rough paths, we consider here the probabilistic construction of the Volterra rough path associated to the fractional Brownian motion with $H>\frac{1}{2}$ and for the standard Brownian motion. The Volterra kernel $k(t,s)$ is allowed to be singular, and behaving similar to $|t-s|^{-γ}$ for some $γ\geq 0$. The construction is done in both the Stratonovich and Itô sense. It is based on a modified Garsia-Rodemich-Romsey lemma which has an interest in its own right, as well as tools from Malliavin calculus. A discussion of challenges and p…
We define and solve Volterra equations driven by an irregular signal, by means of a variant of the rough path theory allowing to handle generalized integrals weighted by an exponential coefficient. The results are applied to the fractional Brownian motion with Hurst coefficient greater than 1/3
This note is devoted to construct a rough path above a multidimensional fractional Brownian motion $B$ with any Hurst parameter $H\in(0,1)$, by means of its representation as a Volterra Gaussian process. This approach yields some algebraic and computational simplifications with respect to [Stochastic Process. Appl. 120 (2010) 1444--1472], where the construction of a rough path over $B$ was first introduced.
We extend the recently developed rough path theory for Volterra equations from (Harang and Tindel, 2019) to the case of more rough noise and/or more singular Volterra kernels. It was already observed in (Harang and Tindel, 2019) that the Volterra rough path introduced there did not satisfy any geometric relation, similar to that observed in classical rough path theory. Thus, an extension of the theory to more irregular driving signals requires a deeper understanding of the specific algebraic structure arising in the Volterra rough path. Inspired by the elements of "non-geometric rough paths" d…
This papers develops a stochastic integration theory with respect to volatility modulated Lévy-driven Volterra (VMLV) processes. It extends recent results in the literature to allow for stochastic volatility and pure jump processes in the integrator. The new integration operator is based on Malliavin calculus and describes an anticipative integral. Fundamental properties of the integral are derived and important applications are given.
This article is devoted to the extension of the theory of rough paths in the context of Volterra equations with possibly singular kernels. We begin to describe a class of two parameter functions defined on the simplex called Volterra paths. These paths are used to construct a so-called Volterra-signature, analogously to the signature used in Lyon's theory of rough paths. We provide a detailed algebraic and analytic description of this object. Interestingly, the Volterra signature does not have a multiplicative property similar to the classical signature, and we introduce an integral product be…
We construct the basis of a stochastic calculus for so-called Volterra processes, i.e., processes which are defined as the stochastic integral of a time-dependent kernel with respect to a standard Brownian motion. For these processes which are natural generalization of fractional Brownian motion, we construct a stochastic integral and show some of its main properties: regularity with respect to time and kernel, transformation under an absolutely continuous change of probability, possible approximation schemes and Ito formula.
This paper generalizes the integration theory for volatility modulated Brownian-driven Volterra processes onto the space G* of Potthoff-Timpel distributions. Sufficient conditions for integrability of generalized processes are given, regularity results and properties of the integral are discussed. We introduce a new volatility modulation method through the Wick product and discuss its relation to the pointwise-multiplied volatility model.
Given a solution $Y$ to a rough differential equation (RDE), a recent result [8] extends the classical Itö-Stratonovich formula and provides a closed-form expression for $\int Y \circ \mathrm{d} \mathbf{X} - \int Y \, \mathrm{d} X$, i.e. the difference between the rough and Skorohod integrals of $Y$ with respect to $X$, where $X$ is a Gaussian process with finite $p$-variation less than 3. In this paper, we extend this result to Gaussian processes with finite $p$-variation such that $3 \leq p < 4$. The constraint this time is that we restrict ourselves to Volterra Gaussian processes with kerne…
We consider rough stochastic volatility models where the variance process satisfies a stochastic Volterra equation with the fractional kernel, as in the rough Bergomi and the rough Heston model. In particular, the variance process is therefore not a Markov process or semimartingale, and has quite low Hölder-regularity. In practice, simulating such rough processes thus often results in high computational cost. To remedy this, we study approximations of stochastic Volterra equations using an $N$-dimensional diffusion process defined as solution to a system of ordinary stochastic differential equ…
We introduce a pathwise integration for Volterra processes driven by Lévy noise or martingale noise. These processes are widely used in applications to turbulence, signal processes, biology, and in environmental finance. Indeed they constitute a very flexible class of models, which include fractional Brownian and Lévy motions and it is part of the so-called ambit fields. A pathwise integration with respect of such Volterra processes aims at producing a framework where modelling is easily understandable from an information perspective. The techniques used are based on fractional calculus and in…
We extend the new approach introduced in arXiv:1912.02064v2 [math.PR] and arXiv:2102.10119v1 [math.PR] for dealing with stochastic Volterra equations using the ideas of Rough Path theory and prove global existence and uniqueness results. The main idea of this approach is simple: Instead of the iterated integrals of a path comprising the data necessary to solve any equation driven by that path, now iterated integral convolutions with the Volterra kernel comprise said data. This leads to the corresponding abstract objects called Volterra-type Rough Paths, as well as the notion of the convolution…
We prove an enhanced limit theorem for additive functionals of a multi-dimensional Volterra process $(y_t)_{t\geq 0}$ in the rough path topology. As an application, we establish weak convergence as $\varepsilon\to 0$ of the solution of the random ordinary differential equation (ODE) $\frac{d}{dt}x^\varepsilon_t=\frac{1}{\sqrt \varepsilon} f(x_t^\varepsilon,y_{\frac{t}{\varepsilon}})$ and show that its limit solves a rough differential equation driven by a Gaussian field with a drift coming from the Lévy area correction of the limiting rough driver. Furthermore, we prove that the stochastic flo…
We treat a stochastic integration theory for a class of Hilbert-valued, volatility-modulated, conditionally Gaussian Volterra processes. We apply techniques from Malliavin calculus to define this stochastic integration as a sum of a Skorohod integral, where the integrand is obtained by applying an operator to the original integrand, and a correction term involving the Malliavin derivative of the same altered integrand, integrated against the Lebesgue measure. The resulting integral satisfies many of the expected properties of a stochastic integral, including an Itô formula. Moreover, we derive…
Based on the notion of paracontrolled distributions, we provide existence and uniqueness results for rough Volterra equations of convolution type with potentially singular kernels and driven by the newly introduced class of convolutional rough paths. The existence of such rough paths above a wide class of stochastic processes including the fractional Brownian motion is shown. As applications we consider various types of rough and stochastic (partial) differential equations such as rough differential equations with delay, stochastic Volterra equations driven by Gaussian processes and moving ave…
The theory of affine processes has been recently extended to the framework of stochastic Volterra equations with continuous trajectories. These so-called affine Volterra processes overcome modeling shortcomings of affine processes because they can have trajectories whose regularity is different from the regularity of the paths of Brownian motion. More specifically, singular kernels yield rough affine processes. This paper extends the theory by considering affine stochastic Volterra equations with jumps. This extension is not straightforward because the jump structure together with possible sin…
This paper concerns portfolio selection with multiple assets under rough covariance matrix. We investigate the continuous-time Markowitz mean-variance problem for a multivariate class of affine and quadratic Volterra models. In this incomplete non-Markovian and non-semimartingale market framework with unbounded random coefficients, the optimal portfolio strategy is expressed by means of a Riccati backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE). In the case of affine Volterra models, we derive explicit solutions to this BSDE in terms of multi-dimensional Riccati-Volterra equations. This framew…
The research presented in this article provides an alternative option pricing approach for a class of rough fractional stochastic volatility models. These models are increasingly popular between academics and practitioners due to their surprising consistency with financial markets. However, they bring several challenges alongside. Most noticeably, even simple non-linear financial derivatives as vanilla European options are typically priced by means of Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations which are more computationally demanding than similar MC schemes for standard stochastic volatility models. In this…
In this paper we develop a Malliavin-Skorohod type calculus for additive processes in the $L^0$ and $L^1$ settings, extending the probabilistic interpretation of the Malliavin-Skorohod operators to this context. We prove calculus rules and obtain a generalization of the Clark-Hausmann-Ocone formula for random variables in $L^1$. Our theory is then applied to extend the stochastic integration with respect to volatility modulated Lévy-driven Volterra processes recently introduced in the literature. Our work yields to substantially weaker conditions that permit to cover integration with respect, …
By using a simple method based on the fractional integration by parts, we prove the existence and the Besov regularity of the density for solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by an additive Gaussian Volterra process. We assume weak regularity conditions on the drift. Several examples of Gaussian Volterra noises are discussed.
We consider stochastic (partial) differential equations appearing as Markovian lifts of affine Volterra processes with jumps from the point of view of the generalized Feller property which was introduced in e.g.~\cite{doetei:10}. In particular we provide new existence, uniqueness and approximation results for Markovian lifts of affine rough volatility models of general jump diffusion type. We demonstrate that in this Markovian light the theory of stochastic Volterra processes becomes almost classical.
We extend recent results on affine Volterra processes to the inhomogeneous case. This includes moment bounds of solutions of Volterra equations driven by a Brownian motion with an inhomogeneous kernel $K(t,s)$ and inhomogeneous drift and diffusion coefficients $b(s,X_s)$ and $σ(s,X_s)$. In the case of affine $b$ and $σσ^T$ we show how the conditional Fourier-Laplace functional can be represented by a solution of an inhomogeneous Riccati-Volterra integral equation. For a kernel of convolution type $K(t,s)=\overline{K}(t-s)$ we establish existence of a solution to the stochastic inhomogeneous Vo…
We investigate stochastic Volterra equations and their limiting laws. The stochastic Volterra equations we consider are driven by a Hilbert space valued \Levy noise and integration kernels may have non-linear dependence on the current state of the process. Our method is based on an embedding into a Hilbert space of functions which allows to represent the solution of the Volterra equation as the boundary value of a solution to a stochastic partial differential equation. We first gather abstract results and give more detailed conditions in more specific function spaces.
We introduce affine Volterra processes, defined as solutions of certain stochastic convolution equations with affine coefficients. Classical affine diffusions constitute a special case, but affine Volterra processes are neither semimartingales, nor Markov processes in general. We provide explicit exponential-affine representations of the Fourier-Laplace functional in terms of the solution of an associated system of deterministic integral equations of convolution type, extending well-known formulas for classical affine diffusions. For specific state spaces, we prove existence, uniqueness, and i…

We discuss the pricing and hedging of volatility options in some rough volatility models. First, we develop efficient Monte Carlo methods and asymptotic approximations for computing option prices and hedge ratios in models where log-volatility follows a Gaussian Volterra process. While providing a good fit for European options, these models are unable to reproduce the VIX option smile observed in the market, and are thus not suitable for VIX products. To accommodate these, we introduce the class of modulated Volterra processes, and show that they successfully capture the VIX smile.
Volterra processes appear in several applications ranging from turbulence to energy finance where they are used in the modelling of e.g. temperatures and wind and the related financial derivatives. Volterra processes are in general non-semimartingales and a theory of integration with respect to such processes is in fact not standard. In this work we suggest to construct an approximating sequence of Lévy driven Volterra processes, by perturbation of the kernel function. In this way, one can obtain an approximating sequence of semimartingales. Then we consider fractional integration with respect…
This paper is devoted to study a class of stochastic Volterra equations associated with fractional Brownian motion. We first prove the Driver type integration by parts formula and the shift Harnack type inequalities. As a direct application, we provide an alternative method to describe the regularities of the law of the solution. Secondly, by using the Malliavin calculus, the Bismut type derivative formula is established, which is then applied to the study of the gradient estimate and the strong Feller property. Finally, we establish the Talagrand type transportation cost inequalities for the …
We provide existence, uniqueness and stability results for affine stochastic Volterra equations with $L^1$-kernels and jumps. Such equations arise as scaling limits of branching processes in population genetics and self-exciting Hawkes processes in mathematical finance. The strategy we adopt for the existence part is based on approximations using stochastic Volterra equations with $L^2$-kernels combined with a general stability result. Most importantly, we establish weak uniqueness using a duality argument on the Fourier--Laplace transform via a deterministic Riccati--Volterra integral equatio…
We prove strong existence and uniqueness, and Hölder regularity, of a large class of stochastic Volterra equations, with singular kernels and non-Lipschitz diffusion coefficient. Extending Yamada-Watanabe's theorem, our proof relies on an approximation of the process by a sequence of semimartingales with regularised kernels. We apply these results to the rough Heston model, with square-root diffusion coefficient, recently proposed in Mathematical Finance to model the volatility of asset prices.
In this work, we develop a multifactor approximation for $d$-dimensional Stochastic Volterra Equations (SVE) with Lipschitz coefficients and kernels of completely monotone type that may be singular. First, we prove an $L^2$-estimation between two SVEs with different kernels, which provides a quantification of the error between the SVE and any multifactor Stochastic Differential Equation (SDE) approximation. For the particular rough kernel case with Hurst parameter lying in $(0,1/2)$, we propose various approximating multifactor kernels, state their rates of convergence and illustrate their eff…
In this article we give necessary and sufficient conditions providing regularity of solutions to stochastic Volterra equations with infinite delay on a $d$-dimensional torus. The harmonic analysis techniques and stochastic integration in function spaces are used. The work applies to both the stochastic heat and wave equations.
We consider rough paths with jumps. In particular, the analogue of Lyons' extension theorem and rough integration are established in a jump setting, offering a pathwise view on stochastic integration against cadlag processes. A class of Levy rough paths is introduced and characterized by a sub-ellipticity condition on the left-invariant diffusion vector fields and and a certain integrability property of the Carnot--Caratheodory norm with respect to the Levy measure on the group, using Hunt's framework of Lie group valued Levy processes. Examples of Levy rough paths include standard multi-dimen…
We investigate nonlinear stochastic Volterra equations in space and time that are driven by Lévy bases. Under a Lipschitz condition on the nonlinear term, we give existence and uniqueness criteria in weighted function spaces that depend on integrability properties of the kernel and the characteristics of the Lévy basis. Particular attention is devoted to equations with stationary solutions, or more generally, to equations with infinite memory, that is, where the time domain of integration starts at minus infinity. Here, in contrast to the case where time is positive, the usual integrability co…
We develop the integration theory of two-parameter controlled paths $Y$ allowing us to define integrals of the form \begin{equation} \int_{[s,t] \times [u,v]} Y_{r,r'} \;d(X_{r}, X_{r'}) \end{equation} where $X$ is the geometric $p$-rough path that controls $Y$. This extends to arbitrary regularity the definition presented for $2\leq p<3$ in the recent paper of Hairer and Gerasimovičs where it is used in the proof of a version of Hörmander's theorem for a class of SPDEs. We extend the Fubini type theorem of the same paper by showing that this two-parameter integral coincides with the two itera…
We formulate indefinite integration with respect to an irregular function as an algebraic problem and provide a criterion for the existence and uniqueness of a solution. This allows us to define a good notion of integral with respect to irregular paths with Hoelder exponent greater than 1/3 (e.g. samples of Brownian motion) and study the problem of the existence, uniqueness and continuity of solution of differential equations driven by such paths. We recover Young's theory of integration and the main results of Lyons' theory of rough paths in Hoelder topology.
We develop the rough path counterpart of Itô stochastic integration and - differential equations driven by general semimartingales. This significantly enlarges the classes of (Itô / forward) stochastic differential equations treatable with pathwise methods. A number of applications are discussed.
In this article, we illustrate the flexibility of the algebraic integration formalism introduced by M. Gubinelli (2004), by establishing an existence and uniqueness result for delay equations driven by rough paths. We then apply our results to the case where the driving path is a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H>1/3.
We investigate rough differential equations with a time-dependent reflecting lower barrier, where both the driving (rough) path and the barrier itself may have jumps. Assuming the driving signals allow for Young integration, we provide existence, uniqueness and stability results. When the driving signal is a càdlàg $p$-rough path for $p \in [2,3)$, we establish existence to general reflected rough differential equations, as well as uniqueness in the one-dimensional case.
We introduce the space of rough paths with Sobolev regularity and the corresponding concept of controlled Sobolev paths. Based on these notions, we study rough path integration and rough differential equations. As main result, we prove that the solution map associated to differential equations driven by rough paths is a locally Lipschitz continuous map on the Sobolev rough path space for any arbitrary low regularity $α$ and integrability $p$ provided $α>1/p$.
