In this paper we describe three geometric applications of quandle homology. We show that it gives obstructions to tangle embeddings, provides the lower bound for the 4-move distance between links, and can be used in determining periodicity of links.
We introduce a new homology theory of quandles, called simplicial quandle homology, which is quite different from quandle homology developed by Carter et al. We construct a homomorphism from a quandle homology group to a simplicial quandle homology group. As an application, we obtain a method for computing the complex volume of a hyperbolic link only from its diagram.
Algebraic homology and cohomology theories for quandles have been studied extensively in recent years. With a given quandle 2(3)-cocycle one can define a state-sum invariant for knotted curves(surfaces). In this paper we introduce another version of quandle (co)homology theory, say positive quandle (co)homology. Some properties of positive quandle (co)homology groups are given and some applications of positive quandle cohomology in knot theory are discussed.
We consider various homological operations on homology of quandles. We introduce the notion of quandle partial derivatives, and extreme chains on which appropriate partial derivatives vanish. Extreme chains yield homological operations. We also consider the degree one homology operations created using elements of the quandle satisfying the so-called $k$-condition.
It is a classical result in reduced homology of finite groups that the order of a group annihilates its homology. Similarly, we have proved that the torsion subgroup of rack and quandle homology of a finite quasigroup quandle is annihilated by its order. However, it does not hold for connected quandles in general. In this paper, we define an $m$-almost quasigroup ($m$-AQ) quandle which is a generalization of a quasigroup quandle and study annihilation of torsion in its rack and quandle homology groups.
We construct elements of the third quandle homology groups of knot quandles, which are called the shadow fundamental classes. They play the same roles for the shadow quandle cocycle invariants of knots as the fundamental classes of knot quandles does for the quandle cocycle invariants. As an application of the shadow fundamental classes, we show the relation between the shadow quandle cocycle invariants and the based shadow quandle cocycle invariants. Moreover, we will show, for a prime knot, that any third quandle homology classes are considered as images of the shadow fundamental classes of …
Quandle homology was defined from rack homology as the quotient by a subcomplex corresponding to the idempotency, for invariance under the type I Reidemeister move. Similar subcomplexes have been considered for various identities of racks and moves on diagrams. We observe common aspects of these identities and subcomplexes; a quandle identity gives rise to a $2$-cycle, the abelian extension with a $2$-cocycle that vanishes on the $2$-cycle inherits the identity, and a subcomplex is constructed from the identity. Specific identities are examined among small connected quandles.
We introduce the notion of a quandle with a good involution and its homology groups. Carter et al. defined quandle cocycle invariants for oriented links and oriented surface-links. By use of good involutions, quandle cocyle invariants can be defined for links and surface-links which are not necessarily oriented or orientable. The invariants can be used in order to estimate the minimal triple point numbers of non-orientable surface-links.
Cocycles are constructed by polynomial expressions for Alexander quandles. As applications, non-triviality of some quandle homology groups are proved, and quandle cocycle invariants of knots are studied. In particular, for an infinite family of quandles, the non-triviality of quandle homology groups is proved for all odd dimensions.
We solve the conjecture by R. Fenn, C. Rourke and B. Sanderson that the rack homology of dihedral quandles satisfies H_3^R(R_p) = Z \oplus Z_p for p odd prime. We also show that H_n^R(R_p) contains Z_p for n>2. Furthermore, we show that the torsion of H_n^R(R_3) is annihilated by 3. We also prove that the quandle homology H_4^Q(R_p) contains Z_p for p odd prime. We conjecture that for n>1 quandle homology satisfies: H_n^Q(R_p) = Z_p^{f_n}, where f_n are "delayed" Fibonacci numbers, that is, f_n = f_{n-1} + f_{n-3} and f(1)=f(2)=0, f(3)=1. Our paper is the first step in approaching this conject…
We give a construction of quandle cocycles from group cocycles, especially, for any integer p \geq 3, quandle cocycles of the dihedral quandle R_p from group cocycles of the cyclic group Z/p. We will show that a group 3-cocycle of Z/p gives rise to a non-trivial quandle 3-cocycle of R_p. When p is an odd prime, since dim_{F_p} H_Q^3(R_p; F_p) = 1, our 3-cocycle is a constant multiple of the Mochizuki 3-cocycle up to coboundary. Dually, we construct a group cycle represented by a cyclic branched covering branched along a knot K from the quandle cycle associated with a colored diagram of K.
A homology and cohomology theory for topological quandles are introduced. The relation between these (co)homology groups and quandle (co)homology groups are studied. The 1 - topological quandle cocycles are used to compute state sum invariants corresponding to knot diagrams.
We prove that if G is an abelian group of odd order then there is an isomorphism from the second quandle homology of the Takasaki quandle of G to the exterior square of G. In particular, for G=Z_k^n, k odd, we obtain Z_k^{n(n-1)/2}. Nontrivial second homology allows us to use 2-cocycles to construct new quandles from T(G), and to construct link invariants.
We prove that if Q is a finite quasigroup quandle, then |Q| annihilates the torsion of its homology. It is a classical result in reduced homology of finite groups that the order of a group annihilates its homology. From the very beginning of the rack homology (between 1990 and 1995) the analogous result was suspected. The first general results in this direction were obtained independently about 2001 by R.A.Litherland and S.Nelson, and P.Etingof and M.Grana. In Litherland-Nelson paper it is proven that if (Q;*) is a finite homogeneous rack (this includes quasigroup racks) then the torsion of ho…
The theory of rack and quandle modules is developed - in particular a tensor product is defined, and shown to satisfy an appropriate adjointness condition. Notions of free rack and quandle modules are introduced, and used to define an enveloping object (the `rack algebra' or `wring') for a given rack or quandle. These constructions are then used to define homology and cohomology theories for racks and quandles which contain all currently-known variants.
This paper is a survey of several papers in quandle homology theory and cocycle knot invariants that have been published recently. Here we describe cocycle knot invariants that are defined in a state-sum form, quandle homology, and methods of constructing non-trivial cohomology classes.
Lower bounds of betti numbers for homology groups of racks and quandles will be given using the quotient homomorphism to the orbit quandles. Exact sequences relating various types of homology groups are analyzed. Geometric methods of proving non-triviality of cohomology groups are also given, using virtual knots. The results can be applied to knot theory as the first step towards evaluationg the state-sum invariants defined from quandle cohomology.
This paper has partially a novel and partially a survey character. We start with a short review of rack (two term) homology of self distributive algebraic structures (shelves) and their connections to knot theory. We concentrate on a sub-family of quandles satisfying the graphic axiom. For a large family of graphic quandles (including infinite ones), we compute the second rack homology groups. Finally, we propose conjectures based on our computational data.
Geometric representations of cycles in quandle homology theory are given in terms of colored knot diagrams. Abstract knot diagrams are generalized to diagrams with exceptional points which, when colored, correspond to degenerate cycles. Bounding chains are realized, and used to obtain equivalence moves for homologous cycles. The methods are applied to prove that boundary homomorphisms in a homology exact sequence vanish.
We define a map from second quandle homology to the Schur multiplier and examine its properties. Furthermore, we express the second homology of Alexander quandles in terms of exterior algebras. Additionally, we present a self-contained proof of its structure and provide some computational examples.
We introduce the notion of quasi-triviality of quandles and define homology of quasi-trivial quandles. Quandle cocycle invariants are invariant under link-homotopy if they are associated with 2-cocycles of quasi-trivial quandles. We thus obtain a lot of numerical link-homotopy invariants.
A homology theory is developed for set-theoretic Yang-Baxter equations, and knot invariants are constructed by generalized colorings by biquandles and Yang-Baxter cocycles.
The quandle homology theory is generalized to the case when the coefficient groups admit the structure of Alexander quandles, by including an action of the infinite cyclic group in the boundary operator. Theories of Alexander extensions of quandles in relation to low dimensional cocycles are developed in parallel to group extension theories for group cocycles. Explicit formulas for cocycles corresponding to extensions are given, and used to prove non-triviality of cohomology groups for some quandles. The corresponding generalization of the quandle cocycle knot invariants is given, by using the…
A quandle is a set that has a binary operation satisfying three conditions corresponding to the Reidemeister moves. Homology theories of quandles have been developed in a way similar to group homology, and have been applied to knots and knotted surfaces. In this paper, a homology theory is defined that unifies group and quandle homology theories. A quandle that is a union of groups with the operation restricting to conjugation on each group component is called a multiple conjugation quandle (MCQ, defined rigorously within). In this definition, compatibilities between the group and quandle oper…
Quandle homology theory has been developed and cocycles have been used to define invariants of oriented classical or surface links. We introduce a shifting chain map $σ$ on each quandle chain complex that lowers the dimensions by one. By using its pull-back $σ^\#$, each $2$-cocycle $ϕ$ gives us the $3$-cocycle $σ^\# ϕ$. For oriented classical links in the $3$-space, we explore relation between their quandle $2$-cocycle invariants associated with $ϕ$ and their shadow $3$-cocycle invariants associated with $σ^\# ϕ$. For oriented surface links in the $4$-space, we explore how powerful their quand…
The homology and cohomology of quandles and racks are used in knot theory: given a finite quandle and a cocycle, we can construct a knot invariant. This is a quick introductory survey to the invariants of knots derived from quandles and racks.
Given a quandle, we can construct a symmetric quandle called the symmetric double of the quandle. We show that the (co)homology groups of a given quandle are isomorphic to those of its symmetric double. Moreover, quandle coloring numbers and quandle cocycle invariants of oriented links and oriented surface-links can be interpreted by using symmetric quandles.
We prove that the degenerate part of the distributive homology of a multispindle is determined by the normalized homology. In particular, when the multispindle is a quandle $Q$, the degenerate homology of $Q$ is completely determined by the quandle homology of $Q$. For this case (and generally for two term homology of a spindle) we provide an explicit Künneth-type formula for the degenerate part. This solves the mystery in algebraic knot theory of the meaning of the degenerate quandle homology, brought over 15 years ago when the homology theories were defined, and the degenerate part was obser…
We show that a variety of monodromy phenomena arising in geometric topology and algebraic geometry are most conveniently described in terms of quandle homomorphisms from a knot quandle associated to the base to a quandle associated to a fiber. We consider the cases of the monodromy of a branched covering, braid monodromy and the monodromy of a Lefschetz fibration.
The theory of quandle (co)homology and cocycle knot invariants is rapidly being developed. We begin with a summary of these recent advances. One such advance is the notion of a dynamical cocycle. We show how dynamical cocycles can be used to color knotted surfaces that are obtained from classical knots by twist-spinning. We also demonstrate relations between cocycle invariants and Alexander matrices.
Joyce showed that for a classical knot $K$, the involutory medial quandle $\text{IMQ}(K)$ is isomorphic to the core quandle of the homology group $H_1(X_2)$, where $X_2$ is the cyclic double cover of $\mathbb S ^3$, branched over $K$. It follows that $|\text{IMQ}(K)| = | \det K |$. In the present paper, the extension of Joyce's result to classical links is discussed. Among other things, we show that for a classical link $L$ of $μ\geq 2$ components, the order of the involutory medial quandle is bounded as follows: \[ \frac{μ| \det L |}{2} \geq |\text{IMQ}(L)| \geq \frac{ μ| \det L |} {2^{μ-1}}.…
This paper demonstrates a topological meaning of quandle cocycle invariants of links with respect to finite connected quandles $X$, from a perspective of homotopy theory: Specifically, for any prime $\ell$ which does not divide the type of $X$, the $\ell$-torsion of this invariants is equal to a sum of the colouring polynomial and a $\Z$-equivariant part of the Dijkgraaf-Witten invariant of a cyclic branched covering space. Moreover, our homotopical approach involves application of computing some third homology groups and second homotopy groups of the classifying spaces of quandles, from resul…
This paper aims to give a one-to-one correspondence between $SU(2)$-representations of knot groups and colorings of knots with spherical quandles and give a geometric meaning of the "trace-free" condition we need to define Casson-Lin invariant.
We study quandle modules over quandle spaces $Q$, i.e. quandles endowed with geometric structures. In the case $Q$ is a regular $s$-manifold, we exhibit how modules over $Q$ are related with representations of Lie-Yamaguti algebras.
The aim of this paper is to define a homology theory for racks with finite rank N and use it to define invariants of knots generalizing the CJKLS 2-cocycle invariants related to the invariants defined in [15]. For this purpose, we prove that N -degenerate chains form a sub-complex of the classical complex defining rack homology. If a rack has rack rank N = 1 then it is a quandle and our homology theory coincides with the CKJLS homology theory [6]. Nontrivial cocycles are used to define invariants of knots and examples of calculations for classical knots with up to 8 crossings and classical lin…
This paper is an extended account of my "Introductory Plenary talk at Knots in Hellas 2016" conference We start from the short introduction to Knot Theory from the historical perspective, starting from Heraclas text (the first century AD), mentioning R.Llull (1232-1315), A.Kircher (1602-1680), Leibniz idea of Geometria Situs (1679), and J.B.Listing (student of Gauss) work of 1847. We spend some space on Ralph H. Fox (1913-1973) elementary introduction to diagram colorings (1956). In the second section we describe how Fox work was generalized to distributive colorings (racks and quandles) and e…
In the present note we describe geometrically the homology classes in the total space of a surface bundle over a surface in terms of the holonomy map. We treat the cases where the base surface is closed or has one boundary component. We replace the wrong theorem of the previous version by some observations on the homology of surface bundles and explain why our previous strategy failed.
We discuss the fundamental (relative) 3-classes of knots (or hyperbolic links), and provide diagrammatic descriptions of the push-forwards with respect to every link-group representation. The point is an observation of a bridge between the relative group homology and quandle homology from the viewpoints of Inoue--Kabaya map \cite{IK}. Furthermore, we give an algorithm to algebraically describe the fundamental 3-class of any hyperbolic knot.
We study the relationship between Bar-Natan's perturbation in Khovanov homology and Szabo's geometric spectral sequence, and construct a link invariant that generalizes both into a common theory. We study a few properties of the new invariant, and introduce a family of s-invariants from the new theory in the same spirit as Rasmussen's s-invariant.
We study the homology of Riemannian manifolds of finite volume that are covered by an $r$-fold product $(\mathbb{H}^2)^r = \mathbb{H}^2 \times \ldots \times \mathbb{H}^2$ of hyperbolic planes. Using a variation of a method developed by Avramidi and Nguyen-Phan, we show that any such manifold $M$ possesses, up to finite coverings, an arbitrarily large number of compact oriented flat totally geodesic $r$-dimensional submanifolds whose fundamental classes are linearly independent in the homology group $H_r(M;\mathbb{Z})$.
Biracks and biquandles, which are useful for studying the knot theory, are special families of solutions of the set-theoretic Yang-Baxter equation. A homology theory for the set-theoretic Yang-Baxter equation was developed by Carter, Elhamdadi, and Saito in order to construct knot invariants. In this paper, we construct a normalized (co)homology theory of a set-theoretic solution of the Yang-Baxter equation. We obtain some concrete examples of non-trivial $n$-cocycles for Alexander biquandles. For a biquandle $X,$ its geometric realization $BX$ is discussed, which has the potential to build in…
We determine the algebraic structure underlying the geometric complex associated to a link in Bar-Natan's geometric formalism of Khovanov's link homology theory (n=2). We find an isomorphism of complexes which reduces the complex to one in a simpler category. This reduction enables us to specify exactly the amount of information held within the geometric complex and thus state precisely its universality properties for link homology theories. We also determine its strength as a link invariant relative to the different topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) used to create link homology. We i…
We show that the Artin representation on concordance classes of string links induces a well-defined epimorphism modulo order n twisted Whitney tower concordance, and that the kernel of this map is generated by band sums of iterated Bing-doubles of any string knot with nonzero Arf invariant. We also continue J. Levine's work [20, 21, 22] comparing two filtrations of the group of homology cobordism classes of 3-dimensional homology cylinders, one defined in terms of an Artin-type representation (the Johnson filtration) and one defined using clasper surgery (the Goussarov-Habiro filtration). In p…
We introduce the notion of partial presimplicial set and construct its geometric realization. We show that any semiadequate diagram yields a partial presimplicial set leading to a geometric realization of the almost-extreme Khovanov homology of the diagram. We give a concrete formula for the homotopy type of this geometric realization, involving wedge of spheres and a suspension of the projective plane.
Let G be a discrete group and let X be a G-finite, proper G-CW-complex. We prove that Kasparov's equivariant K-homology groups KK^G(C_0(X),\C) are isomorphic to the geometric equivariant K-homology groups of X that are obtained by making the geometric K-homology theory of Baum and Douglas equivariant in the natural way. This reconciles the original and current formulations of the Baum-Connes conjecture for discrete groups.
For a virtual $n$-link $K$, we define a new virtual link $VD(K)$, which is invariant under virtual equivalence of $K$. The Dehn space of $VD(K)$, which we denote $DD(K)$, therefore has a homotopy type which is an invariant of $K$. We show that the quandle and even the fundamental group of this space are able to detect the virtual trefoil. We also consider applications to higher-dimensional virtual links.
We provide a unified framework for proving Reidemeister-invariance and functoriality for a wide range of link homology theories. These include Lee homology, Heegaard Floer homology of branched double covers, singular instanton homology, and \Szabo's geometric link homology theory. We follow Baldwin, Hedden, and Lobb (arXiv:1509.04691) in leveraging the relationships between these theories and Khovanov homology. We obtain stronger functoriality results by avoiding spectral sequences and instead showing that each theory factors through Bar-Natan's cobordism-theoretic link homology theory.
We prove that twisted correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology provide lower bounds on the Thurston norm of certain cohomology classes determined by the strong concordance class of a 2-component link $L$ in $S^3$. We then specialise this procedure to knots in $S^2\times S^1$, and obtain a lower bound on their geometric winding number. Furthermore we produce an obstruction for a knot in $S^3$ to have untwisting number 1. We then provide an infinite family of null-homologous knots with increasing geometric winding number, on which the bound is sharp.
The aim of this paper is to introduce and study a geometric spectral sequence in Khovanov homology. The construction was motivated by a similar spectral sequence from Khovanov homology to Heegaard Floer homology.
Khovanov-Floer theories are a class of homological link invariants which admit spectral sequences from Khovanov homology. They include Khovanov homology, Szab{ó}'s geometric link homology, singular instanton homology, and various Floer theories applied to branched double covers. In this short note we show that certain strong Khovanov-Floer theories, including Szab{ó} homology and singular instanton homology, are invariant under Conway mutation. This confirms conjectures of Seed and Lambert-Cole. Along the way we prove two other conjectures about the structure of Szab{ó} homology.
We introduce several geometric notions, including the width of a homology class, to the theory of persistent homology. These ideas provide geometric interpretations of persistence diagrams. Indeed, we give quantitative and geometric descriptions of the "life span" or "persistence" of a homology class. As a case study, we analyze the power filtration on unweighted graphs, and provide explicit bounds for the life spans of homology classes in persistence diagrams in all dimensions.
A major challenge in the study of the structure of the three-dimensional homology cobordism group is to understand the interaction between hyperbolic geometry and homology cobordism. In this paper, for a hyperbolic homology sphere $Y$ we derive explicit bounds on the relative grading between irreducible solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations and the reducible one in terms of the spectral and Riemannian geometry of $Y$. Using this, we provide explicit bounds on some numerical invariants arising in monopole Floer homology (and its $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivariant refinement). We apply this to st…
