A diffusion's induced transport is defined for a linear model of a Fokker-Plank equation under periodic boundary conditions in one-dimensional geometry. The flow is generated by a diffusion and a periodic deriving force induced by a velocity potential. An inverse problem is suggested for evaluating the deriving force in terms of the response function associated with the flow. It is also shown that the inverse problem can be partially solved under some simplifying assumption.
We prove ballistic transport of all orders, that is, $\lVert x^m\mathrm{e}^{-\mathrm{i}tH}ψ\rVert\asymp t^m$, for the following models: the adjacency matrix on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, the Laplace operator on $\mathbb{R}^d$, periodic Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$, and discrete periodic Schrödinger operators on periodic graphs. In all cases we give the exact expression of the limit of $\lVert x^m\mathrm{e}^{-\mathrm{i}tH}ψ\rVert/t^m$ as $t\to+\infty$. We then move to universal covers of finite graphs (these are infinite trees) and prove ballistic transport in mean when the potential is lifted …
Stability estimates in stationary inverse transport
In this expository work, we collect some background results and give a short proof of the following theorem: periodic Jacobi matrices on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ exhibit strong ballistic motion.
We consider an inverse transport problem in fluorescence ultrasound modulated optical tomography (fUMOT) with angularly averaged illuminations and measurements. We study the uniqueness and stability of the reconstruction of the absorption coefficient and the quantum efficiency of the fluorescent probes. Reconstruction algorithms are proposed and numerical validations are performed as well. This paper is an extension of arXiv:1804.01135, where a diffusion model for this problem was considered.
Spectral theory for non-self-adjoint Dirac operators with periodic potentials and inverse scattering transform for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic boundary conditions
In this paper we describe a fast algorithm for generating periodic RVEs of polycrystalline materials. In particular, we use the damped Newton method from semi-discrete optimal transport theory to generate 3D periodic Laguerre tessellations (or power diagrams) with cells of given volumes. Complex, polydisperse RVEs with up to 100,000 grains of prescribed volumes can be created in a few minutes on a standard laptop. The damped Newton method relies on the Hessian of the objective function, which we derive by extending recent results in semi-discrete optimal transport theory to the periodic settin…
In this work, we study the instability of an inverse problem of radiative transport equation with angularly averaged measurement near the diffusion limit, i.e. the normalized mean free path (the Knudsen number) $0 < \eps \ll 1$. It is well-known that there is a transition of stability from Hölder type to logarithmic type with $\eps\to 0$, the theory of this transition of stability is still an open problem. In this study, we show the transition of stability by establishing the balance of two different regimes depending on the relative sizes of $\eps$ and the perturbation in measurements. When $…
We consider independent electrons in a periodic crystal in their ground state, and turn on a uniform electric field at some prescribed time. We rigorously define the current per unit volume and study its properties using both linear response and adiabatic theory. Our results provide a unified framework for various phenomena such as the quantification of Hall conductivity of insulators with broken time-reversibility, the ballistic regime of electrons in metals, Bloch oscillations in the long-time response of metals, and the static conductivity of graphene. We identify explicitly the regime in w…
