We solve one of the open problems in Einstein-Cartan theory, namely we find a natural matter source whose spin angular momentum tensor is compatible with the cosmological principle. We analyze the resulting evolution equations and find that an epoch of accelerated expansion is an attractor. The torsion field quickly decays in that period. Our results are interpreted in the context of the standard model of cosmology.
We consider the most general torsional completion of gravitation together with electrodynamics for the Dirac spinorial material fields, and we show that consistency arguments constrain torsion to be completely antisymmetric and the dynamics to be parity-invariant and described by actions that are either least-order derivative or renormalizable.
We will consider the most general least-order derivative action for the torsional completion of gravitational backgrounds filled with left-handed and right-handed semi-spinorial fields, accounting for all parity-even as well as parity-odd contributions; we will proceed by performing the customary analysis, decomposing torsion and substituting it in terms of the semi-spinorial density currents, in order to obtain the effective action with the torsionally-induced self-interacting potentials among the chiral fermionic fields: we shall see that the resulting effective non-linear potentials will tu…
We consider the most general renormalizable theory of propagating torsion in Einstein gravity for the Dirac matter distribution and we demonstrate that in this case torsion is a massive axial-vector field whose coupling to the spinor gives rise to conditions in terms of which gravitational singularities are not bound to form; we discuss how our results improve those that are presented in the existing literature, and that no further improvement can be achieved unless one is ready to re-evaluate some considerations on the renormalizability of the theory.
In this paper, the recently-introduced ELKO and the well-known Dirac spinor fields will be compared; however, instead of comparing them under the point of view of their algebraic properties or their dynamical features, we will proceed by investigating the analogies and similarities in terms of their geometrical character viewed from the perspective of torsion. The paper will be concluded by sketching some consequences for the application to cosmology and particle physics.
We analyse the spinor action on a curved noncommutative space, the so-called truncated Heisenberg algebra, and in particular, the nonminimal coupling of spinors to the torsion. We find that dimensional reduction of the Dirac action gives the noncommutative extension of the Gross-Neveu model, the model which is, as shown by Vignes-Tourneret, fully renormalisable.
We develop a theory in which there are couplings amongst Dirac spinor, dilaton and non-Riemannian gravity and explore the nature of connection-induced dilaton couplings to gravity and Dirac spinor when the theory is reformulated in terms of the Levi-Civita connection. After presenting some exact solutions without spinors, we investigate the minimal spinor couplings to the model and in conclusion we can not find any nontrivial dilaton couplings to spinor.
We study Dirac spinors in Bianchi type-I cosmological models, within the framework of torsional $f(R)$-gravity. We find four types of results: the resulting dynamic behavior of the universe depends on the particular choice of function $f(R)$; some $f(R)$ models do not isotropize and have no Einstein limit, so that they have no physical significance, whereas for other $f(R)$ models isotropization and Einsteinization occur, and so they are physically acceptable, suggesting that phenomenological arguments may select $f(R)$ models that are physically meaningful; the singularity problem can be avoi…
We study cosmological consequences of the dark spinor model when torsion is included. Only some components of the torsion are allowed to be non-vanishing in homogeneous and isotropic cosmology, but there exist freedoms in the choice of these components which is consistent with the evolution equations. We exploit this and discuss several cases which can result in interesting cosmological consequences. Especially, we show that there exist exact cosmological solutions in which the Universe began its acceleration only recently and this solution is an attractor. This corresponds to a specific form …
Within the scope of Bianchi type VI (BVI) model the self-consistent system of nonlinear spinor and gravitational fields is considered. Exact self-consistent solutions to the spinor and gravitational field equations are obtained for some special choice of spatial inhomogeneity and nonlinear spinor term. The role of inhomogeneity in the evolution of spinor and gravitational field is studied. Oscillatory mode of expansion of the BVI universe is obtained for some special choice of spinor field nonlinearity.
We show that the Einstein-Hilbert, the Einstein-Palatini, and the Holst actions can be derived from the Quadratic Spinor Lagrangian (QSL), when the three classes of Dirac spinor fields, under Lounesto spinor field classification, are considered. To each one of these classes, there corresponds a unique kind of action for a covariant gravity theory. In other words, it is shown to exist a one-to-one correspondence between the three classes of non-equivalent solutions of the Dirac equation, and Einstein-Hilbert, Einstein-Palatini, and Holst actions. Furthermore, it arises naturally, from Lounesto …
The Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory of gravity removes the constraint of general relativity that the affine connection be symmetric by regarding its antisymmetric part, the torsion tensor, as a dynamical variable. The minimal coupling between the torsion tensor and Dirac spinors generates a spin-spin interaction which is significant in fermionic matter at extremely high densities. We show that such an interaction averts the unphysical big-bang singularity, replacing it with a cusp-like bounce at a finite minimum scale factor, before which the Universe was contracting. This scenario also e…
A self-consistent system of interaction nonlinear spinor and scalar fields within the scope of a BI cosmological model filled with perfect fluid is considered. The role of spinor field in the evolution of the Universe is studied. It is shown that the spinor field nonlinearity can generate a negative effective pressure, which can be seen as an alternative source for late time acceleration of the Universe.
This paper studies necessary conditions for the existence of alpha-surfaces in complex space-time manifolds with nonvanishing torsion. For these manifolds, Lie brackets of vector fields and spinor Ricci identities contain explicitly the effects of torsion. This leads to an integrability condition for alpha-surfaces which does not involve just the self-dual Weyl spinor, as in complex general relativity, but also the torsion spinor, in a nonlinear way, and its covariant derivative. Interestingly, a particular solution of the integrability condition is given by conformally right-flat and right-to…
Investigations of the dynamic modes of the Poincare gauge theory of gravity found only two good propagating torsion modes; they are effectively a scalar and a pseudoscalar. Cosmology affords a natural situation where one might see observational effects of these modes. Here we consider only the ``scalar torsion'' mode. This mode has certain distinctive and interesting qualities. In particular this type of torsion does not interact directly with any known matter and it allows a critical non-zero value for the affine scalar curvature. Via numerical evolution of the coupled nonlinear equations we …
In this paper we investigate the accelerating and decelerating cosmological models with non-linear spinor fields and non-minimal interaction of $f(R)$ gravity with a scalar field. We combine two different approaches to the description of dark energy: modified gravity theory and introduction of the additional fields. Solutions for the FRW universe with power-law scale factor are reconstructed for the model under consideration with specific choice for scalar and spinor potentials. It is explained the role of scalar and spinor potentials as well as f(R) function for emergence of accelerating or d…
The problem of time reparameterization is addressed at both the classical and quantum levels in a Bianchi-I universe in which the matter source is a massive Dirac spinor field. We take the scale factors of the metric as the intrinsic time and their conjugate momenta as the extrinsic time. A scalar character of the spinor field is identified as a representation of the extrinsic time. The construction of the field equations and quantization of the model is achieved by solving the Hamiltonian constraint after time identification has been dealt with. This procedure leads to a true Hamiltonian whos…
Within the scope of a FRW cosmological model we have studied the role of spinor field in the evolution of the Universe when it is non-minimally coupled to the gravitational one. We have considered a few types of nonlinearity. It was found that if the spinor field nonlinearity describes an ordinary matter such as radiation, the presence of non-minimality becomes essential and leads to the rapid expansion of the Universe, whereas if the spinor field nonlinearity describes a dark energy, the evolution of the Universe is dominated by it and the difference between the minimal and non-minimally coup…
The necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of $α$-surfaces in complex space-time manifolds with nonvanishing torsion is derived. For these manifolds, Lie brackets of vector fields and spinor Ricci identities contain explicitly the effects of torsion. This leads to an integrability condition for $α$-surfaces which does not involve just the self-dual Weyl spinor, as in complex general relativity, but also the torsion spinor, in a nonlinear way, and its covariant derivative. A similar result also holds for four-dimensional, smooth real manifolds with a positive-definite metric. Inte…
A view is taken up whereby the non-singular Trautman-Kopczyński big-bang creation of the Universe produced a highly torsional hot state at early stages of the cosmic evolution which particularly brought about the formation of a dark matter cloud. It is thus assumed that the combination of Einstein-Cartan's theory with the torsionful version of the two-component ε-formalism of Infeld and van der Waerden supplies a natural local description of dark matter in terms of uncharged spin-one massive fields. In the case of either handedness, the pertinent spinor field equation arises directly from a su…
A self-consistent system of interacting nonlinear spinor and scalar fields within the scope of a Bianchi type-I cosmological model filled with perfect fluid is considered. Exact self-consistent solutions to the corresponding field equations are obtained. The role of spinor field in the evolution of the Universe is studied. It is shown that the spinor field gives rise to an accelerated mode of expansion of the Universe. At the early stage of evolution the spinor field nonlinearity generates the acceleration while at the later stage it is done by the nonzero spinor mass.
Variation of the 4-D string cosmology action with dynamical torsion and massless dilatons lead to an expression of torsion in terms of massless dilatons in the case of de Sitter inflation. The solution is approximated according to the COBE data.
Different characteristic of matter influencing the evolution of the Universe has been simulated by means of a nonlinear spinor field. Exploiting the spinor description of perfect fluid and dark energy evolution of the Universe given by an anisotropic Bianchi type-VI, VI$_0$, V, III, I or isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) one has been studied. It is shown that due to some restrictions on metric functions, initial anisotropy in the models Bianchi type-VI, VI$_0$, V and III does not die away, while the anisotropic Bianchi type-I models evolves into the isotropic one.
Gravitational stability of torsion and inflaton field in a four-dimensional spacetime de Sitter solution in scalar-tensor cosmology where Cartan torsion propagates is investigated in detail. Inflaton and torsion evolution equations are derived by making use of a Lagrangean method. Stable and unstable modes for torsion and inflatons are found to be dependent of the background torsion and inflaton fields. Present astrophysical observations favour a stable mode for torsion since this would explain why no relic torsion imprint has been found on the Cosmic Background Radiation in the universe.
We study the classical and quantum cosmology of a universe in which the matter source is a massive Dirac spinor field and consider cases where such fields are either free or self-interacting. We focus attention on the spatially flat Robertson-Walker cosmology and classify the solutions of the Einstein-Dirac system in the case of zero, negative and positive cosmological constant $Λ$. For $Λ<0$, these solutions exhibit signature transitions from a Euclidean to a Lorentzian domain. In the case of massless spinor fields it is found that signature changing solutions do not exist when the field is f…
We show that the properties of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates allow us to build an analog Taub (axisymmetric Bianchi IX) Universe. We shall develop this proposal on the example of a rubidium condensate, where the relevant experiments are well within present day capabilities. A better Taub analog however would be built out of a collective Rydberg excitation.
Within the scope of Bianchi type-$I$ cosmological model we have studied the role of spinor field in the evolution of the Universe. In doing so we have considered the case with non-minimal coupling. It was found that the non-diagonal components of the energy-momentum tensor of the spinor field, hence the restrictions on the space-time geometry remain the same as in case of minimal coupling. Since in this case the diagonal components of the energy-momentum tensor differ, the evolution of the corresponding universe also differs. For example, while a linear spinor field with non-minimal coupling o…
Torsion in a 5D spacetime is considered. In this case gravitation is defined by the 5D metric and the torsion. It is conjectured that torsion is connected with a spinor field. In this case Dirac's equation becomes the nonlinear Heisenberg equation. It is shown that this equation has a discrete spectrum of solutions with each solution being regular on the whole space and having finite energy. Every solution is concentrated on the Planck region and hence we can say that torsion should play an important role in quantum gravity in the formation of bubbles of spacetime foam. On the basis of the alg…
We apply the statefinder diagnostic to the torsion cosmology, in which an accounting for the accelerated universe is considered in term of a Riemann-Cartan geometry: dynamic scalar torsion. We find that there are some typical characteristic of the evolution of statefinder parameters for the torsion cosmology that can be distinguished from the other cosmological models. Furthermore, we also show that statefinder diagnostic has a direct bearing on the critical points. The statefinder diagnostic divides the torsion parameter $a_1$ into differential ranges, which is in keeping with the requirement…
We have studied the torsion cosmology model in Kaluza-Klein theory. We considered two simple models in which the torsion vectors are $A_μ=(α,0,0,0)$ and $A_μ=a(t)^2(0,β,β,β)$, respectively. For the first model, the accelerating expansion of the Universe can be not explained without dark energy which is similar to that in the standard cosmology. But for the second model, we find that without dark energy the effect of torsion can give rise to the accelerating expansion of the universe and the alleviation of the well-known age problem of the three old objects for appropriated value of the model p…
Fluctuations on de Sitter solution of Einstein-Cartan field equations are obtained in terms of the matter density primordial density fluctuations and spin-torsion density and matter density fluctuations obtained from COBE data. Einstein-de Sitter solution is shown to be unstable even in the absence of torsion. The spin-torsion density fluctuation to generate a deflationary phase is computed from the COBE data.
We study the classical and quantum cosmology of a 4+1-dimensional space-time with a non-zero cosmological constant coupled to a self interacting massive spinor field. We consider a spatially flat Robertson-Walker universe with the usual scale factor $R(t)$ and an internal scale factor $a(t)$ associated with the extra dimension. For a free spinor field the resulting equations admit exact solutions, whereas for a self interacting spinor field one should resort to a numerical method for exhibiting their behavior. These solutions give rise to a degenerate metric and exhibit signature transition fr…
On the basis of an algebraic relation between torsion and a classical spinor field a new interpretation of Einstein-Cartan gravity interacting with classical spinor field is proposed. In this approach the spinor field becomes an auxiliary field and the dynamical equation for this field (the Heisenberg equation) is a dynamical, gravitational equation for torsion. The simplest version of this theory is examined where the metric degrees of freedom are frozen and only torsion plays a role. A spherically symmetric solution of this theory is examined. This solution can be interpreted, in the spirit …
The field equation of orthodox general relativity are written in the context of a geometry with non-vanishing torsion, the Absolute Parallelism (AP) geometry. An AP-structure, with homogeneity and isotropy, is used for cosmological applications. The resulting dynamical equations are those of FRW-Standard cosmology, which have many problems e.g. singularity, particle horizons, ...etc. We suggest a new scheme for investigating the effect of torsion on the dynamics of FRW-Cosmology, without changing the basic structure of general relativity. It is shown that some of these problems will disappear …
We extend the treatment of quantum cosmology to a manifold with torsion. We adopt a model of Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble compatible with the cosmological principle. The universe wavefunction will be subject to a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonian. With a vanishing energy-momentum tensor, the universe evolution in the semiclassical and classical regimes is shown to reflect a two-stage inflationary process induced by torsion.
Cosmology with non-perturbative quantum corrections resulting from torsion is considered. It is shown that the evolution of closed, open and flat Universes is changed because of the presence of a non-zero dispersion of quantum torsion. The evolution of a Universe with quantum torsion and with one type of average curvature can be similar to the evolution of a Universe without quantum torsion and with another type of average curvature. For the description of the non-perturbative quantum torsion, a vector field approximation is applied.
Homogeneous isotropic spatial flat cosmological models with two torsion functions in vacuum are built and investigated in the framework of de Sitter gauge theory of gravity. It is shown that by certain choices of parameters of gravitational Lagrangian the cosmological equations have some exact constant solutions that turn out to be stable de Sitter critical points of dynamical systems and can explain observable acceleration of cosmological expansion. The role of the space-time torsion provoking the acceleration of cosmological expansion is shown.
We consider a system of interacting spinor and scalar fields in a gravitational field given by a Bianchi type-I cosmological model filled with perfect fluid. The interacting term in the Lagrangian is chosen in the form of derivative coupling, i.e., ${\cal L}_{\rm int} = \fracλ{2} \vf_{,α}\vf^{,α} F$, with $F$ being a function of the invariants $I$ an $J$ constructed from bilinear spinor forms $S$ and $P$. We consider the cases when $F$ is the power or trigonometric functions of its arguments. Self-consistent solutions to the spinor, scalar and BI gravitational field equations are obtained. The…
In general relativity the affine connection is required to be symmetric so torsion is zero while according to the Einsten- Cartan's theory torsion is connected to the spin tensor as expressed by the Cartan's equations. We consider the theory of spinors in general relativity in the light of the results of Einstein Cartan's theory. In general relativity the affine connection is required to be symmetric so torsion is zero while according to the Einsten- Cartan's theory torsion is connected to the spin tensor as expressed by the Cartan's equations. We study the cosmology of a quadratic metric-compatible torsionful gravity theory in the presence of a perfect hyperfluid. The gravitational action is an extension of the Einstein-Cartan theory given by the usual Einstein-Hilbert contribution plus all the admitted quadratic parity even torsion scalars and the matter action also exhibits a dependence on the connection. The equations of motion are obtained by regarding the metric and the metric-compatible torsionful connection as independent variables. We then consider a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker background, analyze the conservation la…
f(R)-gravity with geometric torsion (not related to any spin fluid) is considered in a cosmological context. We derive the field equations in vacuum and in presence of perfect-fluid matter and discuss the related cosmological models. Torsion vanishes in vacuum for almost all arbitrary functions f(R) leading to standard General Relativity. Only for f(R)=R^{2}, torsion gives contribution in the vacuum leading to an accelerated behavior . When material sources are considered, we find that the torsion tensor is different from zero even with spinless material sources. This tensor is related to the …
The question of the interpretation of Wheeler-DeWitt solutions in the context of cosmological models is addressed by implementing the Hamiltonian constraint as a spinor wave equation in minisuperspace. We offer a relative probability interpretation based on a non-closed vector current in this space and a prescription for a parametrisation of classical solutions in terms of classical time. Such a prescription can accommodate classically degenerate metrics describing manifolds with signature change. The relative probability density, defined in terms of a Killing vector of the Dewitt metric on mi…
A nonsingular emergent universe cosmology can be realized by a nonconventional spinor field as first developed in \cite{Cai:2012yf}. We study the mechanisms of generating scale-invariant primordial power spectrum of curvature perturbation in the frame of spinor emergent universe cosmology. Particularly, we introduce a light scalar field of which the kinetic term couples to the bilinear of the spinor field. This kinetic coupling can give rise to an effective "Hubble radius" for primordial fluctuations from the scalar field to squeeze at large length scales as well as to form a nearly scale-inva…
A self-consistent system of interacting spinor and scalar fields is considered within the scope of Bianchi type VI cosmological model filled with a perfect fluid. The contribution of the cosmological constant ($Λ$-term) is taken into account as well. Exact self-consistent solutions to the field equations are obtained for a special choice of spatial inhomogeneity and the interaction terms of the spinor and scalar fields. It has been found that some special choice of metric functions can give rise to a singularity-free solutions independent of the value and sign of the $Λ$ term. It is also shown…
We study Weyssenhoff spin fluids in Bianchi type-I cosmological models, within the framework of torsional f(R)-gravity; the resulting field equations are derived and discussed in both Jordan and Einstein frames, clarifying the role played by the spin and the non-linearity of the gravitational Lagrangian f(R) in generating the torsional dynamical contributions. The general conservation laws holding for f(R)-gravity with torsion are employed to provide the conditions needed to ensure the preservation of the Hamiltonian constraint and the consequent correct formulation of the associated initial v…
In a recent paper [1], it has been proposed that relativistic wave-particle duality can be embodied in a relation that shows that the four-velocity of a particle is proportional to the Dirac four-current. In this note we bring out some problems with that idea. In particular, we point out that, in line with existing literature on Einstein-Cartan gravity with torsion, the spin-torsion term should represent negative energy. Moreover, if what is proposed in Eq. (20) of [1] is correct, then the spin torsion term would be zero in the rest frame of the fermion. We suggest a possible resolution of tha…
We introduce and carefully define an entire class of field theories based on non-standard spinors. Their dominant interaction is via the gravitational field which makes them naturally dark; we refer to them as Dark Spinors. We provide a critical analysis of previous proposals for dark spinors noting that they violate Lorentz invariance. As a working assumption we restrict our analysis to non-standard spinors which preserve Lorentz invariance, whilst being non-local and explicitly construct such a theory. We construct the complete energy-momentum tensor and derive its components explicitly by a…
We study the classical and quantum evolution of a universe in which the matter source is a massive Dirac spinor field and the universe is described by a Bianchi type I metric. We focus attention on those classical solutions that admit a degenerate metric in which the scale factors have smooth behavior in transition from a Euclidean to a Lorentzian domain and show that this transition happens when the cosmological constant, $Λ$, is negative. The resulting quantum cosmology and the corresponding Wheeler-DeWitt equation are also studied and closed form expressions for the wave functions of the un…
In this work, we study some thermodynamical aspects associated with torsion in a flat FLRW spacetime cosmic evolution. By implementing two Ansatze for the torsion term, we find that the model admits a phantom regime or a quintessence behavior. This scheme differs from the $Λ$CDM model at the thermodynamical level. The resulting cosmic expansion is not adiabatic, the fulfillment of the second law of thermodynamics requires a positive torsion term, and the temperature of the cosmic fluid is always positive. The entropy of the torsion phantom scenario is negative, but introducing chemical potenti…
The present paper analyses the Einstein-Cartan theory of gravitation with Elko spinors as sources of curvature and torsion. After minimally coupling the Elko spinors to torsion, the spin angular momentum tensor is derived and its structure is discussed. It shows a much richer structure than the Dirac analogue and hence it is demonstrated that spin one half particles do not necessarily yield only an axial vector torsion component. Moreover, it is argued that the presence of Elko spinors partially solves the problem of minimally coupling Maxwell fields to Einstein-Cartan theory.
In this work we present the general differential geometry of a background in which the space-time has both torsion and curvature with internal symmetries being described by gauge fields, and that is equipped to couple spinorial matter fields having spin and energy as well as gauge currents: torsion will turn out to be equivalent to an axial-vector massive Proca field and because the spinor can be decomposed in its two chiral projections, torsion can be thought as the mediator that keeps spinors in stable configurations; we will justify this claim by studying some limiting situations. We will t…
In this work, we investigate the effects of the torsion-fermionic interaction on the energy levels of fermions within a Riemann-Cartan geometry using a model-independent approach. We consider the case of fermions minimally coupled to the background torsion as well as non-minimal extensions via additional couplings with the vector and axial fermionic currents which include parity-breaking interactions. In the limit of zero-curvature, and for the cases of constant and spherically symmetric torsion, we find a Zeeman-like effect on the energy levels of fermions and anti-fermions depending on wheth…
The thermodynamics is extented to spacetimes with spin-torsion density.Impplications to Einstein-Cartan-de Sitter inflationary phases are discussed.A relation between the spin-torsion density, entropy and temperature is presented.A lower limit for the radius of the Universe may be obtained from the spin-torsion density and the Planck lenght.
In this work we investigate the effects of torsion in the framework of Einstein-Cartan theory in early cosmology. We study solutions for a homogeneous and isotropic relativistic Weyssenhoff spin fluid with dynamical timelike axial current, also homogeneous and isotropic. The general solutions can mostly be described by means of three particular solutions. The properties of these solutions (such as singularity avoidance and primordial or late accelerated expansion) are analysed and depend on the relations between the source parameters.
Poincaré gauge theory of gravity offers opportunities to solve some principal problems of general relativity theory and modern cosmology. In the frame of this theory the gravitational interaction can have the repulsion character in the case of usual gravitating matter with positive values of energy density and pressure satisfying energy dominance condition. Cosmological consequences of gravitational repulsion are considered in the case of homogeneous isotropic models in connection with the problem of cosmological singularity and dark energy problem of general relativity theory.
