The memory kernel of the self-part of the intermediate scattering function is studied. We found that the short-time behavior of the memory kernel for our MD-simulated glass-forming Ni$_{20}$Zr$_{80}$-system shows a deviation from the polynomial form predicted by MCT. By using the gaussian approximation we give a more detailed description of the short-time dynamics of the system.
We use the ``isoconfigurational ensemble'' [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 93}, 135701 (2004)] to analyze both dynamical and structural properties in simulations of a glass forming molecular liquid. We show that spatially correlated clusters of low potential energy molecules are observable on the time scale of structural relaxation, despite the absence of spatial correlations of potential energy in the instantaneous structure of the system. We find that these structural heterogeneities correlate with dynamical heterogeneities in the form of clusters of low molecular mobility.
We present new simulation results for the specific heat in a classical model of a binary mixture glass-former in two dimensions. We show that in addition to the formerly observed specific heat peak there is a second peak at lower temperatures which was not observable in earlier simulations. This is a surprise, as most texts on the glass transition expect a single specific heat peak. We explain the physics of the two specific heat peaks by the micro-melting of two types of clusters. While this physics is easily accessible, the consequences are that one should not expect any universality in the …
We introduce the ideal Gaussian glass-forming system as a model to describe the thermodynamics and dynamics of supercooled liquids on a local scale in terms of the properties of the potential energy landscape (PEL). The first ingredient is the Gaussian distribution of inherent structures, the second a specific relation between energy and mobility. This model is compatible with general considerations as well as with several computer simulations on atomic computer glass-formers. Important observables such as diffusion constants, structural relaxation times and kinetic as well as thermodynamic fr…
We address the interesting temperature range of a glass forming system where the mechanical properties are intermediate between those of a liquid and a solid. We employ an efficient Monte-Carlo method to calculate the elastic moduli, and show that in this range of temperatures the moduli are finite for short times and vanish for long times, where `short' and `long' depend on the temperature. By invoking some exact results from statistical mechanics we offer an alternative method to compute shear moduli using Molecular Dynamics simulations, and compare those to the Monte-Carlo method. The final…
We present a quantitative study of strain correlations in quiescent supercooled liquids and glasses. Recent two-dimensional computer simulations and experiments indicate that even supercooled liquids exhibit long-lived, long-range strain correlations. Here we investigate this issue in three dimensions via experiments on hard sphere colloids and molecular dynamics simulations of a glass forming binary Lennard Jones mixture. Both in the glassy state and in the supercooled regime, strain correlations are found to decay with a $1/r^{3}$ power-law behavior, reminiscent of elastic fields around an i…
A novel glass-forming photoactive cholesteric materials doped by quantum dots were prepared and studied. The possibility of phototuning of circularly-polarized emission was demonstrated.
We report excess specific heat in a series of metallic glass forming liquids. It is found that the excess specific heat relative to glass at glass transition temperature Tg is constant and close to, where R is gas constant. In the typical Pd40Ni10Cu30P20 metallic glass forming liquid, the excess specific heat is independent of temperature. A quantitative description of the excess specific heat is built up. The atomic translational diffusion is the origin of the excess specific heat. The results provide a fundamental understanding to the glass transition in metallic glasses.
Thermodynamic effects of local structure fluctuations in glassformers are analyzed in terms of energy basins and inter-basin hopping. Depending on the time-scale of measurement, one observes short-time thermodynamic properties related to a narrow set of basins, or equilibrium properties that include structural relaxation. The inter-basin hopping is manifested by the fluctuations of the pressure, internal energy, and other thermodynamic short time characteristics. Formulas relating the inter-basin fluctuations of pressure and internal energy to the differences between the long- and short-time s…
We use large scale computer simulations of a glass-forming liquid in which a fraction c of the particles has been permanently pinned. We find that the relaxation dynamics shows an exponential dependence on c. This result can be rationalized by means of a simple theoretical Ansatz and we discuss its implication for thermodynamic theories for the glass-transition. For intermediate and low temperatures we find that the slowing down of the dynamics due to the pinning saturates and that the cooperativity decreases with increasing c, results which indicate that in glass-forming liquids there is a dy…
A quinary (La0.5Ce0.5)65Al10(Co0.6Cu0.4)25 alloy with superior glass-forming ability (GFA), identified by the formation of fully glassy rod of 32 mm in diameter by tilt-pour casting, was reported. By comparing with the GFA of quarternary (La0.5Ce0.5)65Al10TM25 and ternary Ln65Al10TM25 alloys (Ln = La or Ce; TM = Co or Cu), we suggest that the strong frustration of crystallization by utilizing the coexistence of La-Ce and Co-Cu to complicate competing crystalline phases is helpful to construct BMG component with superior GFA.
We show the correlation between nanoscale structural heterogeneity and mechanical property and glass forming ability of Zr-based metallic glasses (MGs). Detailed parameters of medium range ordering (MRO) that constitutes the structural heterogeneity, including the type, size, and volume fraction of MRO domains determined using 4-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy, directly correlate with the ductility and glass forming ability of Zr-Cu-Co-Al MGs. Mesoscale deformation simulation incorporating the experimentally determined MRO confirms that the diverse types and sizes of MRO …
It was recently shown that the real part of the frequency-dependent fluidity for several glass-forming liquids of different chemistry conforms to the prediction of the random barrier model (RBM) devised for ac electrical conduction in disordered solids [S. P. Bierwirth \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 119}, 248001 (2017)]. Inspired by these results we introduce a crystallization-resistant modification of the Kob-Andersen binary Lennard-Jones mixture for which the results of extensive graphics-processing unit (GPU)-based molecular-dynamics simulations are presented. We find that the low-t…
The Shintani-Tanaka model is a glass-forming system whose constituents interact via anisotropic potential depending on the angle of a unit vector carried by each particle. The decay of time-correlation functions of the unit vectors exhibits the characteristics of generic relaxation functions during glass transitions. In particular it exhibits a 'stretched exponential' form, with the stretching index beta depending strongly on the temperature. We construct a quantitative theory of this correlation function by analyzing all the physical processes that contribute to it, separating a rotational fr…
In the context of a classical example of glass-formation in 3-dimensions we exemplify how to construct a statistical mechanical theory of the glass transition. At the heart of the approach is a simple criterion for verifying a proper choice of up-scaled quasi-species that allow the construction of a theory with a finite number of 'states'. Once constructed, the theory identifies a typical scale $ξ$ that increases rapidly with lowering the temperature and which determines the $α$-relaxation time $τ_α$ as $τ_α\sim \exp(μξ/T)$ with $μ$ a typical chemical potential. The theory can predict relaxati…

Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are produced by rapidly thermally quenching supercooled liquid metal alloys below the glass transition temperature at rates much faster than the critical cooling rate R_c below which crystallization occurs. The glass-forming ability of BMGs increases with decreasing R_c, and thus good glass-formers possess small values of R_c. We perform molecular dynamics simulations of binary Lennard-Jones (LJ) mixtures to quantify how key parameters, such as the stoichiometry, particle size difference, attraction strength, and heat of mixing, influence the glass-formability of m…
We propose that glass-forming liquids are intrinsically under the influences of both fluctuating interactions and random fields well-known in the field of spin systems. This is due to the frustration between the isotropic and anisotropic parts of effective intermolecular interactions. Our model indicates the existence of two key temperatures relevant to glass transition, the density ordering point T^*_m and the Vogel-Fulcher temperature T_0. Between T^*_m and T_0, a system has features similar to the `Griffiths phase', while below $T_0$ it has those peculiar to the `spin-glass phase'. This pic…
The precise nature of complex structural relaxation as well as an explanation for the precipitous growth of relaxation time in cooling glass-forming liquids are essential to the understanding of vitrification of liquids. The dramatic increase of relaxation time is believed to be caused by the growth of one or more correlation lengths, which has received much attention recently. Here, we report a direct link between the growth of a specific local-geometrical-order and an increase of dynamic-length-scale as the atomic dynamics in metallic glass-forming liquids slow down. Although several types o…
The design of multi-functional BMGs is limited by the lack of a quantitative understanding of the variables that control the glass-forming ability (GFA) of alloys. Both geometric frustration (e.g. differences in atomic radii) and energetic frustration (e.g. differences in the cohesive energies of the atomic species) contribute to the GFA. We perform molecular dynamics simulations of binary Lennard-Jones mixtures with only energetic frustration. We show that there is little correlation between the heat of mixing and critical cooling rate $R_c$, below which the system crystallizes, except that $…
We present a quantitative theory for a relaxation function in a simple glass-forming model (binary mixture of particles with different interaction parameters). It is shown that the slowing down is caused by the competition between locally favored regions (clusters) which are long lived but each of which relaxes as a simple function of time. Without the clusters the relaxation of the background is simply determined by one typical length which we deduce from an elementary statistical mechanical argument. The total relaxation function (which depends on time in a nontrivial manner) is quantitative…
In a recent article, Schmelzer and Tropin [Entropy 20 [2] 103 (2018)] presented an unfounded, confusing critique of several aspects of modern glass science. Relying on pre-Socratic Greek philosophy and state-of-the-art scientific understanding from the 1920s-1930s, Schmelzer and Tropin propagate an antiquated view of glass physics that is at odds with well-accepted knowledge in the field from both theory and experiments conducted in the post-World War II era. The objective of this short letter is to elucidate and extinguish their critique. This rebuttal is directed to our colleagues and especi…
Understanding the formation of bulk metallic glasses (BMG) in metallic systems and finding a reliable criterion for selection of BMG compositions are among the most important issues in condensed matter physics and material science. Using the results of magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on both amorphous and crystallized Cu-Hf alloys (30-70 at% Cu) we find a correlation between the difference in magnetic susceptibilities of corresponding glassy and crystalline alloys and the variation in the glass forming ability (GFA) in these alloys. Since the same correlation can be inferred fro…
Melting temperatures at ambient pressure of systems of isosceles Lennard-Jones trimers with angles ranging from 70 degrees to 100 degrees are determined. Two crystal structures are considered: a distorted body centered cubic structure and a distorted face centered cubic structure with preferred angles of 77 and 96 degrees, respectively. Liquid dynamics are slowed down when the angle is increased. A trimer angle of 83 degrees yields the largest distance between isochrones and the melting temperature, suggesting that this value gives the optimal glass-forming ability. It is conjectured that bett…
We develop the elastically collective nonlinear Langevin equation theory of bulk relaxation of glass-forming liquids to investigate molecular mobility under compression conditions. The applied pressure restricts more molecular motion and therefore significantly slows-down the molecular dynamics when increasing the pressure. We quantitatively determine the temperature and pressure dependence of the structural relaxation time. To validate our model, dielectric spectroscopy experiments for three rigid and non-polymeric supramolecules are carried out at ambient and elevated pressures. The numerica…
Generally there are two strategies in fitting the measured structural relaxation time of glass-forming liquids: the single-formula approach e.g. the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation, and the multi-branch approach. In this note, a two-branch method was presented. By analyzing existing single- and multi-branch approaches, I am trying to recall the attention of researchers in this field to the possibilities of the multi-branch approach.
Despite two decades of studies, the formation of metallic glasses, very promising systems for industrial applications, still remains mostly unexplained. This lack of knowledge hinders the search for new systems, still performed with combinatorial trial and error. In the past, it was speculated that some sort of "confusion" during crystallization could play a key role during their formation. In this article, we propose a heuristic descriptor quantifying such confusion. It is based on the "thermodynamic density of competing crystalline states", parameterized from high-throughput ab-initio calcul…
We propose a model of a heterogeneous glass forming liquid and compute the low-temperature behavior of a tagged molecule moving within it. This model exhibits stretched-exponential decay of the wavenumber-dependent, self intermediate scattering function in the limit of long times. At temperatures close to the glass transition, where the heterogeneities are much larger in extent than the molecular spacing, the time dependence of the scattering function crosses over from stretched-exponential decay with an index $b=1/2$ at large wave numbers to normal, diffusive behavior with $b = 1$ at small wa…
Binary Cu-Zr system is a representative bulk glassformer demonstrating high glass forming ability due to pronounced icosahedral local ordering. From the first glance, Ni-Zr system is the most natural object to expect the same behavior because nickel and copper are neighbours in the periodic table and have similar physicochemical properties. However, doing molecular dynamics simulations of $\rm Ni_αZr_{1-α}$ alloys described by embedded atom model potential, we observe different behaviour. We conclude that the Ni-Zr system has the same glass-forming ability as an additive binary Lennard-Jones m…
We theoretically investigate structural relaxation and activated diffusion of glass-forming liquids at different pressures using both the Elastically Collective Nonlinear Langevin Equation (ECNLE) theory and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. An external pressure restricts local motions of a single molecule within its cage and triggers the slowing down of cooperative mobility. While the ECNLE theory and simulation generally predict a monotonic increase of the glass transition temperature and dynamic fragility with pressure, the simulation indicates a decrease of fragility as pressure above 10…
Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the effects of Si solute on the glass formation and crystallization of Pd liquid. Pure Pd sample prepared by quenching process with cooling rate of $10^{13}$ K/s can be in an amorphous state but the structural analysis indicates there is nearly no glass-forming motif in the sample. However, doping a small amount Si (Si concentration ~ 4%) the sample can be vitrified at a cooling rate of $10^{12}$ K/s. The glass-forming motifs such as Pd-centered Z13, Si-centered Z9-like and Mixed-ICO-Cube clusters with 5-fold local symmetry are found to be…
We calculate the cohesive energies of Fe-based glass-forming alloys in the B-Fe-Y-Zr quaternary system. Our {\it ab-initio} calculations fully relax atomic positions and lattice parameters yielding enthalpies of mixing at T=0K. We examine both the known equilibrium and metastable phases as well as a selection of plausible structures drawn from related alloy systems. This method, generally reproduces experimentally determined phase diagrams while providing additional information about energetics of metastable and unstable structures. In particular we can identify crystalline structures whose fo…
Motivated by recent experimental studies probing i) the existence of a mobile layer at the free surface of glasses, and ii) the capillary leveling of polymer nanofilms, we study the evolution of square-wave patterns at the free surface of a generic glass-forming binary Lennard-Jones mixture over a wide temperature range, by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The pattern's amplitude is monitored and the associated decay rate is extracted. The evolution of the latter as a function of temperature exhibits a crossover between two distinct behaviours, over a temperature range typically bounde…
In the last few decades, theoretical and experimental studies of glass-forming liquids have revealed presence of universal regularities in the viscosity-temperature data. In the present work, we propose a viscosity model for scaling description of experimental viscosity data. A feature of this model is presence of only two adjustable parameters and high accuracy of experimental data approximation by this model for a wide temperature range. The basis of the scaling description is an original temperature scale. Within this scaling description we obtain the transformed Angell plot, in which the a…
This review deals with the kinetic and thermodynamic fragility of bulk metallic glass forming liquids. The experimental methods to determine the kinetic fragility, relaxation behavior and thermodynamic functions of undercooled metallic liquids are introduced. Existing data are assessed and discussed using the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equation and in the frameworks of the Adam-Gibbs as well as the Cohen-Turnbull free volume approach. In contrast to pure metals and most non glass forming alloys, bulk glass formers are moderately strong liquids. In general the fragility parameter $D^{*} $ increases …
The local organisation of a simulated glass-forming mixture due to Kob and Andersen is analysed. Evidence is presented for a structural transition from triangulated coordination polyhedra to cubic as the number fraction of the smaller species B increases towards equimolar. The impact of the change on the partial radial distribution function g-{BB}(r) is established. The dependence of the crystallisation rate on the composition is determined and the related to the observed structural changes.
Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are amorphous alloys with desirable mechanical properties and processing capabilities. To date, the design of new BMGs has largely employed empirical rules and trial-and-error experimental approaches. Ab initio computational methods are currently prohibitively slow to be practically used in searching the vast space of possible atomic combinations for bulk glass formers. Here, we perform molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained, anisotropic potential, which mimics interatomic covalent bonding, to measure the critical cooling rates for metal-metalloid alloy…
The elastic properties of the Zr$_{50}$Cu$_{40}$Ag$_{10}$ metallic alloy, such as the bulk modulus $B$, the shear modulus $G$, the Young's modulus $E$ and the Poisson's ratio $σ$, are investigated by molecular dynamics simulation in the temperature range $T=250-2000$ K and at an external pressure of $p = 1.0$ bar. It is shown that the liquid-glass transition is accompanied by a considerable increase in the shear modulus $G$ and the Young's modulus $E$ (by more than $50\%$). The temperature dependence of the Poisson's ratio exhibits a sharp fall from typical values for metals of approximately $…
The structural description for the intriguing link between the fast vibrational dynamics and slow diffusive dynamics in glass-forming systems is one of the most challenging issues in physical science. Here, in a model of metallic supercooled liquid, we find that local connectivity as an atomic-level structural order parameter tunes the short-time vibrational excitations of the icosahedrally coordinated particles and meanwhile modulates their long-time relaxation dynamics changing from stretched to compressed exponentials, denoting a dynamic transition from subdiffusive to hyperdiffusive motion…
The relaxation dynamics of glass-forming systems shows a multitude of features that are absent in normal liquids, such as non-exponential relaxation and a strong temperature-dependence of the relaxation time. Connecting these dynamic properties to the microscopic structure of the system is very challenging because of the presence of the structural disorder. Here we use computer simulations of a metallic glass-former to establish such a connection. By probing the temperature and wave-vector dependence of the intermediate scattering function we find that the relaxation dynamics of the glassy mel…
High pressures allow the synthesis of new metastable compounds that remain intact for a sufficiently long time at normal conditions. Until now, it has not been fully understood how pressure, glass-forming ability and solidification of liquids are interconnected. We have investigated the structure of the glass-forming eutectic alloy Al86Ni2Co6Gd6 obtained by rapid cooling from the melt having a temperature of 1800 K under a pressure of 10 GPa. X-ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy show that the samples are homogeneous and dense. The structure is finely dispersed. New stable crystal…
Special role in computer simulations of supercooled liquid and glasses is played by few general models representing certain classes of real glass-forming systems. Recently, it was shown that one of the most widely used model glassformers -- Kob-Andersen binary Lennard-Jones mixture -- crystalizes in quite lengthy molecular dynamics simulations and, moreover, it is in fact a very poor glassformer at large system sizes. Thus, our understanding of crystallization stability of model glassformers is far from complete due to the fact that relatively small system sizes and short timescales have been …
