The entropy bound conjecture concerning black hole dynamical horizons is proved. The conjecture states, if a dynamical horizon, $D_H$, is bounded by two surfaces with areas of $A_B$ and $\abp$ ($\abp>A_B$), then the entropy, $S_D$, that crosses $D_H$ must satisfy $S_D\leq {1/4}(\abp-A_B)$. We show that this conjecture is implied by the generalized Bousso bound. Consequently, the generalized second law holds for dynamical horizons. Finally, we show that the lightlike bousso bound and its spacelike counterpart can be unified as one bound.
We derive black hole entropy based on the near-horizon symmetries of black hole space-times. To derive these symmetries we make use of an $(R,T)$-plane close to a Killing horizon. We identify a set of vector fields that preserves this plane and forms a Witt algebra. The corresponding algebra of Hamiltonians is shown to have a non-trivial central extension. Using the Cardy formula and the central charge we obtain the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
We explicitly prove the horizon-entropy increase law for both causal and quasi-locally defined horizons in scalar-tensor and $f(R)$ gravity theories. Contrary to causal event horizons, future outer trapping horizons are not conformally invariant and we provide a modification of trapping horizons to complete the proof, using the idea of generalised entropy. This modification means they are no longer foliated by marginally outer trapped surfaces but fixes the location of the horizon under a conformal transformation. We also discuss the behaviour of horizons in "veiled" general relativity and sho…
The paper deals with universal thermodynamics for FRW model of the universe bounded by apparent (or event) horizon. Assuming Hawking temperature on the horizon, the unified first law is examined on the horizon for different gravity theories. The results show that equilibrium configuration is preserved with a modification to Bekenstein entropy on the horizon.
We discuss how to define a kinematical horizon entropy on a causal set. We extend a recent definition of horizon molecules to a setting with a null hypersurface crossing the horizon. We argue that, as opposed to the spacelike case, this extension fails to yield an entropy local to the hypersurface-horizon intersection in the continuum limit when the causal set approximates a curved spacetime. We then investigate the entropy defined via the Spacetime Mutual Information between two regions of a causal diamond truncated by a causal horizon, and find it does limit to the area of the intersection.
In this paper, we extend the calculation of the entropy of the nonrotating isolated horizons in 4 dimensional spacetime to that in a higher dimensional spacetime. We show that the boundary degrees of freedom on an isolated horizon can be described effectively by a punctured $SO(1,1)$ BF theory. Then the entropy of the nonrotating isolated horizon can be calculated out by counting the microstates. It satisfies the Bekenstein-Hawking law.
We study the irreversible (non-equilibrium) thermodynamics of FRW universe containing only dark energy. Using the modified entropy-area relation which is motivated from the loop quantum gravity, we calculate the entropy-corrected form of the apparent horizon of FRW universe.
We calculate the exact degeneracy of states corresponding to the area operator in the framework of semiclassical loop quantum gravity, using techniques of combinatorial theory. The degeneracy counting is used to find entropy of apparent horizons derived from generalised coherent states which include a sum over graphs. The correction to the entropy is determined as exponentially decreasing in area.
Universal thermodynamics for FRW model of the Universe bounded by apparent/event horizon has been considered for massive gravity theory. Assuming Hawking temperature and using the unified first law of thermodynamics on the horizon, modified entropy on the horizon has been determined. For simple perfect fluid with constant equation of state, generalized second law of thermodynamics and thermodynamical equilibrium have been examined on both the horizons.
In this paper, the BF theory method is applied to the nonrotating isolated horizons in Lovelock theory. The final entropy matches the Wald entropy formula for this theory. We also confirm the conclusion got by Bodendorfer et. al. that the entropy is related to the flux operator rather than the area operator in general diffeomorphic-invariant theory.
The Hod conjecture proposes that the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies determine the entropy quantum of a black hole. Considering the Maggiore modification of this conjecture we calculate the entropy spectra of general, single horizon, asymptotically flat black holes in two-dimensional dilaton gravity. We also compute the entropy quanta of the two-dimensional Witten and AdS(2) black holes. Using the results for the entropy quanta of these two-dimensional black holes we discuss whether the produced values are generic. Finally we extend the results on the entropy spectra of other black holes.
We first review the accelerating, rotating and charged Plebanski-Demianski (PD) black hole, which includes the Kerr-Newman rotating black hole and the Taub-NUT spacetime. The main feature of this black hole is that it has 4 horizons like event horizon, Cauchy horizon and two accelerating horizons. In the non-extremal case, the surface area, entropy, surface gravity, temperature, angular velocity, Komar energy and irreducible mass on the event horizon and Cauchy horizon are presented for PD black hole. The entropy product, temperature product, Komar energy product and irreducible mass product a…
We construct condensate states encoding the continuum spherically symmetric quantum geometry of an horizon in full quantum gravity, i.e. without any classical symmetry reduction, in the group field theory formalism. Tracing over the bulk degrees of freedom, we show how the resulting reduced density matrix manifestly exhibits an holographic behavior. We derive a complete orthonormal basis of eigenstates for the reduced density matrix of the horizon and use it to compute the horizon entanglement entropy. By imposing consistency with the horizon boundary conditions and semiclassical thermodynamic…

The spectroscopy of the apparent horizon of Vaidya black holes is investigated via adiabatic invariance. We obtain an equally spaced entropy spectrum with its quantum equal to the one given by Bekenstein. We demonstrate that the quantization of entropy and area is a generic property of horizon, not only for stationary black holes, and the results also exit in a dynamical black hole. Our work also shows that the quantization of black hole is closely related to Hawking temperature, which is an interesting thing.
Adopting thin film brick-wall model, we calculate the entropy of a nonuniformly rectilinearly accelerating non-stationary black hole expressed by Kinnersley metric. Because the black hole is accelerated, the event horizon is axisymmetric. The different points of horizon surface may have different temperature. We calculate the temperature and the entropy density at every point of the horizon at first, then we obtain the total entropy through integration, which is proportional to the aera of event horizon as the same as the stationary black holes. It is shown that the black hole entropy may be r…
In the Euclidean path integral approach, we calculate the actions and the entropies for the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter solutions. When the temperatures of black hole and cosmological horizons are equal, the entropy is the sum of one-quarter areas of black hole and cosmological horizons; when the inner and outer black hole horizons coincide, the entropy is only one-quarter area of cosmological horizon; and the entropy vanishes when the two black hole horizons and cosmological horizon coincide. We also calculate the Euler numbers of the corresponding Euclidean manifolds, and discuss the relati…
Assuming that the dominant contribution, to the entropy due to entanglement across a spherical hypersurface, comes from the near horizon degrees of freedom, we analytically derive the entropy of a free massless scalar field in Minkowski spacetime across a spherical entangling surface. The resulting entanglement entropy is found to be proportional to the entangling surface as expected. A logarithmic subleading term with positive coefficient is also found through numerical computation. We have extended the analysis to higher dimensions as well.
We numerically solve for 2+1 asymptotically Lifshitz universal horizon solutions in Horava-Lifshitz gravity for dynamical exponents $z=2$ through $z=8$. We find that for all $z$ there is a thermodynamical first law and Smarr formula. Furthermore, we find that the energy-entropy relation expected for a thermal state in a two dimensional Lifshitz field theory, $E=\frac{2}{z+2}TS$, is also satisfied for universal horizons, including the correct $z$ scaling.
Motivated by the analogy between the spacetime and the solid with inhomogeneous elasticity modulus, we present an alternative method to obtain the field equation of any diffeomorphism-invariant gravity, by extremizing the constructed entropy function of the displacement vector field of spacetime solid. In general stationary spacetimes, we show that the Wald entropy of horizon arises from the on-shell entropy function of spacetime solid.
In this paper, the entropy of isolated horizons in non-minimally coupling scalar field theory and in the scalar-tensor theory of gravitation is calculated by counting the degree of freedom of quantum states in loop quantum gravity. Instead of boundary Chern-Simons theory, the boundary BF theory is used. The advantages of the new approaches are that no spherical symmetry is needed, and that the final result matches exactly with the Wald entropy formula.
In this work we have investigated the effects of three nongaussian entropies, namely, the modified Rényi entropy (MRE), the Sharma-Mittal entropy (SME) and the dual Kaniadakis entropy (DKE) in the investigation of the generalized second law (GSL) of thermodynamics violation. The GSL is an extension of the second law for black holes. Recently, it was concluded that a total entropy is the sum of the entropy enclosed by the apparent horizon plus the entropy of the horizon itself when the apparent horizon is described by the Barrow entropy. It was assumed that the universe is filled with matter an…
In this paper, the isolated horizons with rotation are considered. It is shown that the symplectic form is the same as that in the nonrotating case. As a result, the boundary degrees of freedom can be also described by an SO$(1,1)$ BF theory. The entropy satisfies the Bekenstein-Hawking area law with the same Barbero-Immirzi parameter.
We present an observation about the proposal that four-dimensional modification of general relativity may explain the observed cosmic acceleration today. Assuming that the thermodynamical nature of gravity theory continues to hold in modified gravity theories, we derive the modified horizon entropy formula from the modified Friedmann equation. We argue that our results imply that there are conceptual problems in some models of four-dimensional modification of general relativity.
By considering the generalized uncertainty principle, the degrees of freedom near the apparent horizon of Vaidya black hole are calculated with thin film model. The result shows that a cut-off can be introduced naturally rather than taking by hand. Furthermore, if the minimal length is chosen to be a specific value, the statistical entropy will satisfy the conventional area law at the horizon, which might reveal some deep things of the minimal length.
We compute logarithmic corrections to entropy for black holes with hyperbolic horizon. For this purpose, we introduce the topological black hole and MTZ black holes in four dimensions, while in five dimensions, the topological black holes and Gauss-Bonnet black hole with negative coupling are considered. As they stand, logarithmic corrections are problematic because small black holes with positive heat capacity have negative energies. However, introducing the background state of extremal black hole, the logarithmic corrections are performed for black hole with hyperbolic horizon.
We analyze the near horizon conformal symmetry for black hole solutions in gravity with a conformally coupled scalar field using the method proposed by Majhi and Padmanabhan recently. It is shown that the entropy of the black holes of the form $\mathrm{d}s^2 = - f(r)\mathrm{d}t^2 + \mathrm{d}r^2/f(r)+...$ agrees with Wald entropy. This result is different from previous result obtained by M. Natsuume, T. Okamura and M. Sato using the canonical Hamiltonian formalism, which claims a discrepancy from Wald entropy.
The spatial expansion of the universe can be described as the emergence of space with the progress of cosmic time, through a simple equation, $ΔV = Δt\left(N_{surf}- N_{bulk}\right)$. This law of emergence suggested by Padmanabhan in the context of general relativity for a flat universe has been generalized by Sheykhi to Gauss Bonnet and Lovelock gravity for a universe with any spacial curvature. We investigate whether this generalized holographic equipartition effectively implies the maximization of horizon entropy. First, we obtain the constraints imposed by the maximization of horizon entro…
The decade-old formulation of the isolated horizon classically and within loop quantum gravity, and the extraction of the microcanonical entropy of such a horizon from this formulation, is reviewed, in view of recent renewed interest. There are two main approaches to this problem: one employs an SU(2) Chern-Simons theory describing the isolated horizon degrees of freedom, while the other uses a reduced U(1) Chern-Simons theory obtained from the SU(2) theory, with appropriate constraints imposed on the spectrum of boundary states `living' on the horizon. It is shown that both these ways lead to…
We consider the nonrotating isolated horizon as an inner boundary of a four-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetime region. Due to the symmetry of the isolated horizon, it turns out that the boundary degrees of freedom can be described by a SO(1,1) BF theory with sources. This provides a new alternative approach to the usual one using Chern-Simons theory to study the black hole entropy. To count the microscopical degrees of freedom with the boundary BF theory, the entropy of the isolated horizon can also be calculated in the framework of loop quantum gravity. The leading-order contribution t…
We study the relation between the thermodynamics and field equations of generalized gravity theories on the dynamical trapping horizon with sphere symmetry. We assume the entropy of dynamical horizon as the Noether charge associated with the Kodama vector and point out that it satisfies the second law when a Gibbs equation holds. We generalize two kinds of Gibbs equations to Gauss-Bonnet gravity on any trapping horizon. Based on the quasi-local gravitational energy found recently for $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor gravity in some special cases, we also build up the Gibbs equations, where the…
Using the analytic extension method, we study Hawking radiation of an $(n + 4)$-dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole. Under the condition that the total energy is conserved, taking the reaction of the radiation of particles to the spacetime into consideration and considering the relation between the black hole event horizon and cosmological horizon, we obtain the radiation spectrum of de Sitter spacetime. This radiation spectrum is no longer a strictly pure thermal spectrum. It is related to the change of the Bekenstein-Hawking(B-H) entropy corresponding the black hole event horizon …
It is shown in this paper that the symplectic form for the system consisting of $D$-dimensional bulk Palatini gravity and SO$(1,1)$ BF theory on an isolated horizon as a boundary just contains the bulk term. An alternative quantization procedure for the boundary BF theory is presented. The area entropy is determined by the degree of freedom of the bulk spin network states which satisfy a suitable boundary condition. The gauge-fixing condition in the approach and the advantages of the approach are also discussed.
We give a short introduction to the approaches currently used to describe black holes in loop quantum gravity. We will concentrate on the classical issues related to the modeling of black holes as isolated horizons, give a short discussion of their canonical quantization by using loop quantum gravity techniques, and a description of the combinatorial methods necessary to solve the counting problems involved in the computation of the entropy.
We show that the spherically symmetric isolated horizon can be described in terms of an SU(2) connection and a su(2) valued one form, obeying certain constraints. The horizon symplectic structure is precisely the one of 3d gravity in a first order formulation. We quantize the horizon degrees of freedom in the framework of loop quantum gravity, with methods recently developed for 3d gravity with non-vanishing cosmological constant. Bulk excitations ending on the horizon act very similar to particles in 3d gravity. The Bekenstein-Hawking law is recovered in the limit of imaginary Barbero-Immirzi…
Black hole entropy appears to be ``universal''--many independent calculations, involving models with very different microscopic degrees of freedom, all yield the same density of states. I discuss the proposal that this universality comes from the behavior of the underlying symmetries of the classical theory. To impose the condition that a black hole be present, we must partially break the classical symmetries of general relativity, and the resulting Goldstone boson-like degrees of freedom may account for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. In particular, I demonstrate that the imposition of a ``st…
We show, by using Regge calculus, that the entropy of any finite part of a Rindler horizon is, in the semi-classical limit, one quarter of the area of that part. We argue that this result implies that the entropy associated with any horizon of spacetime is, in semi-classical limit, one quarter of its area. As an example, we derive the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy law for the Schwarzschild black hole.
This is a review of my work published in the papers [1-4]. It offers a more detailed discussion of the results than what was given in the published papers and it links my results to some conclusions recently made by other people. It also offers some new arguments for the conclusions previously made. The fundamental idea of this work is that the semi-classical quantization of the black hole entropy, as suggested by Bekenstein [5], holds (at least) generically for the spacetime horizons. We support this conclusion by two separate arguments: 1. we generalize Bekenstein's lower bound on the horizo…
The spectroscopy of a weakly isolated horizon (WIH) has been investigated. We obtain an equally spaced entropy spectrum with its quantum equal to the one given by Bekenstein [5]. We demonstrate that the quantization of entropy and area is a generic property of horizon, and the results exit in a wide class of spacetimes admitting weakly isolated horizons. Our results also indicate that the entropy quantum of the black hole horizon is closely related to Hawking temperature.
This letter presents a new, solely thermodynamical argument for considering the states of the quantum isolated horizon of a black hole as distinguishable. We claim that only if the states are distinguishable, the thermodynamic entropy is an extensive quantity and can be well-defined. To show this, we make a comparison with a classical ideal gas system whose statistical description makes only sense if an additional 1/N!-factor is included in the state counting in order to cure the Gibbs paradox. The case of the statistical description of a quantum isolated horizon is elaborated, to make the cla…
The quasi-local notion of an isolated horizon is employed to study the entropy of black holes without any particular symmetry in loop quantum gravity. The idea of characterizing the shape of a horizon by a sequence of local areas is successfully applied in the scheme to calculate the entropy by the $SO(1,1)$ BF boundary theory matching loop quantum gravity in the bulk. The generating function for calculating the microscopical degrees of freedom of a given isolated horizon is obtained. Numerical computations of small black holes indicate a new entropy formula containing the quantum correction r…
Based on the consideration that the black hole horizon and the cosmological horizon of Reissner-Nordström black hole in de Sitter space are not independent each other, we conjecture the total entropy of the system should have an extra term contributed from the entanglement between the two horizons, except for the sum of the two horizon entropies. Making use of the globally effective first law and the effective thermodynamic quantities, we derive the total entropy and find that it will diverge as the two horizons tends to coincide.
From a new perspective, we discuss the thermodynamic entropy of $n+2$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter(RNdS) black hole and analyze the phase transition of the effective thermodynamic system. Considering the correlations between the black hole event horizon and the cosmological horizon, we conjecture that the total entropy of the RNdS black hole should contain an extra term besides the sum of the entropies of the two horizons. In the lukewarm case, the effective temperature of the RNdS black hole is the same as that of the black hole horizon and the cosmological horizon. Under this con…
There is a deep underlying problem in the model dependent thermodynamic analysis of black holes shown in the above quoted paper. In this method one can only find out the canonical entropy of the black hole but not the `microcanonical' entropy. Besides this crucial issue a few other problems are also discussed.
The covariant entropy bound conjecture is an important hint for the quantum gravity, with several versions available in the literature. For cosmology, Ashtekar and Wilson-Ewing ever show the consistence between the loop gravity theory and one version of this conjecture. Recently, S. He and H. Zhang proposed a version for the dynamical horizon of the universe, which validates the entropy bound conjecture for the cosmology filled with perfect fluid in the classical scenario when the universe is far away from the big bang singularity. However, their conjecture breaks down near big bang region. We…
We show that essentially pure classical thermodynamics is sufficient to determine Bekenstein's formula for the black hole's entropy, $S=ηA$. We base our reasoning on the minimal assumption that since black body radiation is describable by classical thermodynamics, so is the complete black hole-Hawking radiation system. Furthermore, we argue that any non-linear correction to the black hole entropy must be quantum mechanical in nature. The proportionality coefficient, $η=1/4\ell_P^2$, must be calculated within a semi-classical or full-fledged quantum mechanical framework.
A de Sitter black hole or a black hole spacetime endowed with a positive cosmological constant has two Killing horizons -- a black hole and a cosmological event horizon surrounding it. It is natural to expect that the total Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of such spacetimes should be the sum of the two horizons' areas. In this work we apply the recently developed formalism using the Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary term and the near horizon symmetries to derive the total entropy of such two horizon spacetimes. We construct a suitable general geometric set up for general stationary axisymmetric spaceti…
In the realm of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, the thermodynamics of apparent horizon bridges with the usual FLRW (Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker) equation only for a special case where the matter field is given by a perfect fluid having equation of state (EoS) parameter $= -1$, i.e $p = -ρ$ with $ρ$ and $p$ represent the energy density and the pressure of the fluid, respectively. To include the case $p \neq -ρ$, we consider the modification of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in the present work. In particular, we develop an entropy function that leads to the usual FLRW equations, for a $…
In relativistic gravity, requiring a spacetime hypersurface be a Killing horizon breaks the general covariance of general relativity. The residual algebra of horizon preserving diffeomorphisms can be extended to a Virasoro algebra near the horizon, the central charge of which yields the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy via the Cardy formula. This near horizon symmetry approach provides an argument for why black hole entropy computations in various quantum gravity models all agree. An exception may be Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, where causal horizons are not Killing horizons but rather universal horizon…
Starting from the surface term of gravitational action, one can construct a Virasoro algebra with central extension, with which the horizon entropy can be derived by using Cardy formula. This approach gives a new routine to calculate and interpret the horizon entropy. In this paper, we generalize this approach to a more general case, the isolated horizon, which contains non-stationary spacetimes beyond stationary ones. By imposing appropriate boundary conditions near the horizon, the full set of diffeomorphism is restricted to a subset where the corresponding Noether charges form a Virasoro al…
We describe a simple way of obtaining horizon entropy using the approach based on the Virasoro algebra and central charge. We show that the Virasoro algebra defined by the Noether currents corresponding to the surface term of gravitational action, for the diffeomorphisms which leave the horizon structure unaltered, has a central extension that directly leads to the horizon entropy. In this approach there are no ambiguities in the calculation of the central charge. We explain why this approach is physically well motivated and could provide greater insight into the nature of horizon entropy.
For the 2-charge extremal holes in string theory we show that the Bekenstein entropy obtained from the area of the stretched horizon has a statistical interpretation as a `coarse graining entropy': different microstates give geometries that differ near r=0 and the stretched horizon cuts off the metric at r=b where these geometries start to differ.
We impose a certain class of boundary conditions on Killing horizon and show for Lagrangians with arbitrary curvature dependence that one can identify a Virasoro algebra with nontrivial central charge and calculable Hamiltonian eigenvalue. Entropy can then be calculated from Cardy formula.
The Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of black holes in Einstein's theory of gravity is equal to a quarter of the horizon area in units of Newton's constant. Wald has proposed that in general theories of gravity the entropy of stationary black holes with bifurcate Killing horizons is a Noether charge which is in general different from the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. We show that the Noether charge entropy is equal to a quarter of the horizon area in units of the effective gravitational coupling on the horizon defined by the coefficient of the kinetic term of specific graviton polarizations on the hor…
