We discuss how to define a kinematical horizon entropy on a causal set. We extend a recent definition of horizon molecules to a setting with a null hypersurface crossing the horizon. We argue that, as opposed to the spacelike case, this extension fails to yield an entropy local to the hypersurface-horizon intersection in the continuum limit when the causal set approximates a curved spacetime. We then investigate the entropy defined via the Spacetime Mutual Information between two regions of a causal diamond truncated by a causal horizon, and find it does limit to the area of the intersection.
We explicitly prove the horizon-entropy increase law for both causal and quasi-locally defined horizons in scalar-tensor and $f(R)$ gravity theories. Contrary to causal event horizons, future outer trapping horizons are not conformally invariant and we provide a modification of trapping horizons to complete the proof, using the idea of generalised entropy. This modification means they are no longer foliated by marginally outer trapped surfaces but fixes the location of the horizon under a conformal transformation. We also discuss the behaviour of horizons in "veiled" general relativity and sho…
Entropy is a concept that has traditionally been reliant on a definite notion of causality. However, without a definite notion of causality, the concept of entropy is not all lost. Indefinite causal structure results from combining probabilistic predictions and dynamical space-time. Combining the probabilistic nature of quantum theory and dynamical treatment space-time from general relativity is an approach to the problem of quantum gravity. The causaloid framework lays the mathematical groundwork to be able to treat indefinite causal structure. In this paper, we build on the causaloid mathema…
We investigate the causal temperature profiles in a recent model of a radiating star undergoing dissipative gravitational collapse without the formation of an horizon. It is shown that this simple exact model provides a physically reasonable behaviour for the temperature profile within the framework of extended irreversible thermodynamics.
This thesis explores two avenues into understanding the physics of black holes and horizons beyond general relativity, via analogue models and Lorentz violating theories. Analogue spacetimes have wildly different dynamics to general relativity; this allows the possibility of non-Killing horizons in stationary solutions. In the case of non-Killing horizons different definitions of surface gravity are truly different quantities. This also has application to modified theories of gravity, where there is no reason to expect all horizons to be Killing horizons. In Lorentz violating theories, the sit…
The finiteness of black hole entropy suggest that spacetime is fundamentally discrete, and hints at an underlying relationship between geometry and "information". The foundation of this relationship is yet to be uncovered, but should manifest itself in a theory of quantum gravity. We review recent attempts to define a microscopic measure for black hole entropy and for the maximum entropy of spherically symmetric spacelike regions, within the causal set approach to quantum gravity.
Causal horizons in pure Poincare $AdS$ are Killing horizons generated by dilatation vector. Renormalization group (RG) flow breaks the dilatation symmetry and makes the horizons dynamical. We propose that the boundary RG flow is dual to the thermodynamics of the causal horizon. As a check of our proposal we show that the gravity dual of the boundary $c$-theorem is the second law of thermodynamics obeyed by causal horizons. The holographic $c$-function is the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy (density) of the dynamical causal horizon. We explicitly construct the $c$-function in a generic class of RG-f…
We derive black hole entropy based on the near-horizon symmetries of black hole space-times. To derive these symmetries we make use of an $(R,T)$-plane close to a Killing horizon. We identify a set of vector fields that preserves this plane and forms a Witt algebra. The corresponding algebra of Hamiltonians is shown to have a non-trivial central extension. Using the Cardy formula and the central charge we obtain the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
We study the causal structure of dynamical charged black holes, with a sufficient number of massless fields, using numerical simulations. Neglecting Hawking radiation, the inner horizon is a null Cauchy horizon and a curvature singularity due to mass inflation. When we include Hawking radiation, the inner horizon becomes space-like and is separated from the Cauchy horizon, which is parallel to the out-going null direction. Since a charged black hole must eventually transit to a neutral black hole, we studied the neutralization of the black hole and observed that the inner horizon evolves into …
We propose a new definition of "horizon molecules" in Causal Set Theory following pioneering work by Dou and Sorkin. The new concept applies for any causal horizon and its intersection with any spacelike hypersurface. In the continuum limit, as the discreteness scale tends to zero, the leading behaviour of the expected number of horizon molecules is shown to be the area of the horizon in discreteness units, up to a dimension dependent factor of order one. We also determine the first order corrections to the continuum value, and show how such corrections can be exploited to obtain further geome…
The paper deals with universal thermodynamics for FRW model of the universe bounded by apparent (or event) horizon. Assuming Hawking temperature on the horizon, the unified first law is examined on the horizon for different gravity theories. The results show that equilibrium configuration is preserved with a modification to Bekenstein entropy on the horizon.
We propose an expression for the entropy density associated with the Local Causal Horizons in any diffeomorphism invariant theory of gravity. If the black-hole entropy of the theory satisfies the physical process version of the first law of thermodynamics then our proposed entropy satisfies the Clausius relation. Thus, our study shows that the thermodynamic nature of the spacetime horizons is not restricted to the black holes; it also applies to the local causal horizons in the neighborhood of any point in the spacetime.
In this paper, we extend the calculation of the entropy of the nonrotating isolated horizons in 4 dimensional spacetime to that in a higher dimensional spacetime. We show that the boundary degrees of freedom on an isolated horizon can be described effectively by a punctured $SO(1,1)$ BF theory. Then the entropy of the nonrotating isolated horizon can be calculated out by counting the microstates. It satisfies the Bekenstein-Hawking law.
We study the irreversible (non-equilibrium) thermodynamics of FRW universe containing only dark energy. Using the modified entropy-area relation which is motivated from the loop quantum gravity, we calculate the entropy-corrected form of the apparent horizon of FRW universe.
We calculate the exact degeneracy of states corresponding to the area operator in the framework of semiclassical loop quantum gravity, using techniques of combinatorial theory. The degeneracy counting is used to find entropy of apparent horizons derived from generalised coherent states which include a sum over graphs. The correction to the entropy is determined as exponentially decreasing in area.
Universal thermodynamics for FRW model of the Universe bounded by apparent/event horizon has been considered for massive gravity theory. Assuming Hawking temperature and using the unified first law of thermodynamics on the horizon, modified entropy on the horizon has been determined. For simple perfect fluid with constant equation of state, generalized second law of thermodynamics and thermodynamical equilibrium have been examined on both the horizons.
We present some of the recent results and open questions on the causality problem in General Relativity. The concept of singularity is intimately connected with future trapped surface and inner event horizon formation. We offer a brief overview of the Hawking Penrose singularity theorems and discuss a few open problems concerning the future Cauchy development (domain of dependence), breakdown criteria and energy conditions for the horizon stability. A key question is whether causality violating regions, generating a Cauchy horizon are allowed. We raise several questions concerning the invisibi…
In this paper, the BF theory method is applied to the nonrotating isolated horizons in Lovelock theory. The final entropy matches the Wald entropy formula for this theory. We also confirm the conclusion got by Bodendorfer et. al. that the entropy is related to the flux operator rather than the area operator in general diffeomorphic-invariant theory.
The Hod conjecture proposes that the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies determine the entropy quantum of a black hole. Considering the Maggiore modification of this conjecture we calculate the entropy spectra of general, single horizon, asymptotically flat black holes in two-dimensional dilaton gravity. We also compute the entropy quanta of the two-dimensional Witten and AdS(2) black holes. Using the results for the entropy quanta of these two-dimensional black holes we discuss whether the produced values are generic. Finally we extend the results on the entropy spectra of other black holes.
We first review the accelerating, rotating and charged Plebanski-Demianski (PD) black hole, which includes the Kerr-Newman rotating black hole and the Taub-NUT spacetime. The main feature of this black hole is that it has 4 horizons like event horizon, Cauchy horizon and two accelerating horizons. In the non-extremal case, the surface area, entropy, surface gravity, temperature, angular velocity, Komar energy and irreducible mass on the event horizon and Cauchy horizon are presented for PD black hole. The entropy product, temperature product, Komar energy product and irreducible mass product a…

We construct condensate states encoding the continuum spherically symmetric quantum geometry of an horizon in full quantum gravity, i.e. without any classical symmetry reduction, in the group field theory formalism. Tracing over the bulk degrees of freedom, we show how the resulting reduced density matrix manifestly exhibits an holographic behavior. We derive a complete orthonormal basis of eigenstates for the reduced density matrix of the horizon and use it to compute the horizon entanglement entropy. By imposing consistency with the horizon boundary conditions and semiclassical thermodynamic…

The spectroscopy of the apparent horizon of Vaidya black holes is investigated via adiabatic invariance. We obtain an equally spaced entropy spectrum with its quantum equal to the one given by Bekenstein. We demonstrate that the quantization of entropy and area is a generic property of horizon, not only for stationary black holes, and the results also exit in a dynamical black hole. Our work also shows that the quantization of black hole is closely related to Hawking temperature, which is an interesting thing.
The entropy bound conjecture concerning black hole dynamical horizons is proved. The conjecture states, if a dynamical horizon, $D_H$, is bounded by two surfaces with areas of $A_B$ and $\abp$ ($\abp>A_B$), then the entropy, $S_D$, that crosses $D_H$ must satisfy $S_D\leq {1/4}(\abp-A_B)$. We show that this conjecture is implied by the generalized Bousso bound. Consequently, the generalized second law holds for dynamical horizons. Finally, we show that the lightlike bousso bound and its spacelike counterpart can be unified as one bound.
Adopting thin film brick-wall model, we calculate the entropy of a nonuniformly rectilinearly accelerating non-stationary black hole expressed by Kinnersley metric. Because the black hole is accelerated, the event horizon is axisymmetric. The different points of horizon surface may have different temperature. We calculate the temperature and the entropy density at every point of the horizon at first, then we obtain the total entropy through integration, which is proportional to the aera of event horizon as the same as the stationary black holes. It is shown that the black hole entropy may be r…
A number of general issues relating to superluminal photon propagation in gravitational fields are explored. The possibility of superluminal, yet causal, photon propagation arises because of Equivalence Principle violating interactions induced by vacuum polarisation in QED in curved spacetime. Two general theorems are presented: first, a polarisation sum rule which relates the polarisation averaged velocity shift to the matter energy-momentum tensor and second, a `horizon theorem' which ensures that the geometric event horizon for black hole spacetimes remains a true horizon for real photon pr…
In the Euclidean path integral approach, we calculate the actions and the entropies for the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter solutions. When the temperatures of black hole and cosmological horizons are equal, the entropy is the sum of one-quarter areas of black hole and cosmological horizons; when the inner and outer black hole horizons coincide, the entropy is only one-quarter area of cosmological horizon; and the entropy vanishes when the two black hole horizons and cosmological horizon coincide. We also calculate the Euler numbers of the corresponding Euclidean manifolds, and discuss the relati…
This article reviews the properties and limitations associated with the existence of particle, visual, and event horizons in cosmology in general and in inflationary universes in particular, carefully distinguishing them from `Hubble horizons'. It explores to what extent one might be able to probe conditions beyond the visual horizon (which is close in size to the present Hubble radius), thereby showing that visual horizons place major limits on what are observationally testable aspects of a multiverse, if such exists. Indeed these limits largely prevent us from observationally proving a multi…
Assuming that the dominant contribution, to the entropy due to entanglement across a spherical hypersurface, comes from the near horizon degrees of freedom, we analytically derive the entropy of a free massless scalar field in Minkowski spacetime across a spherical entangling surface. The resulting entanglement entropy is found to be proportional to the entangling surface as expected. A logarithmic subleading term with positive coefficient is also found through numerical computation. We have extended the analysis to higher dimensions as well.
We numerically solve for 2+1 asymptotically Lifshitz universal horizon solutions in Horava-Lifshitz gravity for dynamical exponents $z=2$ through $z=8$. We find that for all $z$ there is a thermodynamical first law and Smarr formula. Furthermore, we find that the energy-entropy relation expected for a thermal state in a two dimensional Lifshitz field theory, $E=\frac{2}{z+2}TS$, is also satisfied for universal horizons, including the correct $z$ scaling.
Motivated by the analogy between the spacetime and the solid with inhomogeneous elasticity modulus, we present an alternative method to obtain the field equation of any diffeomorphism-invariant gravity, by extremizing the constructed entropy function of the displacement vector field of spacetime solid. In general stationary spacetimes, we show that the Wald entropy of horizon arises from the on-shell entropy function of spacetime solid.
In this paper, the entropy of isolated horizons in non-minimally coupling scalar field theory and in the scalar-tensor theory of gravitation is calculated by counting the degree of freedom of quantum states in loop quantum gravity. Instead of boundary Chern-Simons theory, the boundary BF theory is used. The advantages of the new approaches are that no spherical symmetry is needed, and that the final result matches exactly with the Wald entropy formula.
As our understanding of the past in a bouncing universe is limited, it becomes difficult to propose a cosmological model which can give some understanding of the causal structure of the bouncing universe. In this article we address the issue related to the particle horizon problem in the bouncing universe models. It is shown that in many models the particle horizon does not exist, and consequently the horizon problem is trivially solved. In some cases a bouncing universe can have a particle horizon and we specify the conditions for its existence. In the absence of a particle horizon the Hubble…
The anomalous conformal transformation law of the generalized entropy is found for dilaton gravity coupled to a 1+1 conformal matter sector with central charges $c = \tilde{c}$. (When $c \ne \tilde{c}$ the generalized entropy is not invariant under local Lorentz boosts.) It is shown that a certain second null derivative of the entropy, $S_\text{gen}" + (6/c)(S_\text{out}')^2$, is primary, and therefore retains its sign under a general conformal transformation. Consequently all conformal vacua have increasing entropy on causal horizons. Alternative definitions of the horizon, including apparent…
The Causal Set hypothesis asserts that spacetime, ultimately, is discrete and its underlying structure is that of a locally finite partial ordered set, and macroscopic causality reflects a deeper notion of order in terms of which all the geometrical structure of spacetime must find their ultimate expression. After reviewing the main aspects of Causal Sets Kinematics, and the recently developed Stochastic Dynamics. We concentrate on possible implications in the fields of cosmology and black holes. In the context of black hole, we propose a possible interpretation of the entropy as the number of…
We study causal diamonds in Minkowski, Schwarzschild, (anti) de Sitter, and Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes using Euclidean methods. The null boundaries of causal diamonds are shown to map to isolated punctures in the Euclidean continuation of the parent manifold. Boundary terms around these punctures decrease the Euclidean action by $A_\diamond/4$, where $A_\diamond$ is the area of the holographic screen around the diamond. We identify these boundary contributions with the maximal entropy of gravitational degrees of freedom associated with the diamond.
In this work we analyse asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric spacetimes in which an event horizon is present without any trapped surfaces. We identify two types of such spacetimes, each related to the asymptotic behaviour (in time) of one of the two degrees of freedom of the metric. We study the causal structure of both types, showing that one almost always has a Cauchy horizon beyond which it is extendable, while the other is inextendable but has two separate future null infinity regions on either side of the horizon. We also study what energy conditions can be satisfied by the matter a…
The identification of a causal-connection scale motivates us to propose a new covariant bound on entropy within a generic space-like region. This "causal entropy bound", scaling as the square root of EV, and thus lying around the geometric mean of Bekenstein's S/ER and holographic S/A bounds, is checked in various "critical" situations. In the case of limited gravity, Bekenstein's bound is the strongest while naive holography is the weakest. In the case of strong gravity, our bound and Bousso's holographic bound are stronger than Bekenstein's, while naive holography is too tight, and hence typ…
We propose bulk duals for certain coarse-grained entropies of boundary regions. The `one-point entropy' is defined in the conformal field theory by maximizing the entropy in a domain of dependence while fixing the one-point functions. We conjecture that this is dual to the area of the edge of the region causally accessible to the domain of dependence (i.e. the `causal holographic information' of Hubeny and Rangamani). The `future one-point entropy' is defined by generalizing this conjecture to future domains of dependence and their corresponding bulk regions. We show that the future one-point …
The quantum theory of near horizon regions of spacetimes with classical spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic Friedman-Robertson-Walker geometry can be approximately described by a two dimensional conformal field theory. The central charge of this theory and expectation value of its Hamiltonian are both proportional to the horizon area in units of Newton's constant. The statistical entropy of horizon states, which can be calculated using two dimensional state counting methods, is proportional to the horizon area and depends on a numerical constant of order unity which is determined by Plan…
In arXiv:1508.01343 [hep-th], one of the authors proposed that in AdS/CFT the gravity dual of the boundary $c$-theorem is the second law of thermodynamics satisfied by causal horizons in AdS and this was verified for Einstein gravity in the bulk. In this paper we verify this for higher derivative theories. We pick up theories for which an entropy expression satisfying the second law exists and show that the entropy density evaluated on the causal horizon in a RG flow geometry is a holographic c-function. We also prove that given a theory of gravity described by a local covariant action in the …
The conditions for validity of the Causal Entropy Bound (CEB) are verified in the context of non-singular cosmologies with classical sources. It is shown that they are the same conditions that were previously found to guarantee validity of the CEB: the energy density of each dynamical component of the cosmic fluid needs to be sub-Planckian and not too negative, and its equation of state needs to be causal. In the examples we consider, the CEB is able to discriminate cosmologies which suffer from potential physical problems more reliably than the energy conditions appearing in singularity theor…
We model a black hole spacetime as a causal set and count, with a certain definition, the number of causal links crossing the horizon in proximity to a spacelike or null hypersurface $Σ$. We find that this number is proportional to the horizon's area on $Σ$, thus supporting the interpretation of the links as the ``horizon atoms'' that account for its entropy. The cases studied include not only equilibrium black holes but ones far from equilibrium.
The open string metric arises kinematically in studying fluctuations of open string degrees of freedom on a D-brane. An observer, living on a probe D-brane, can send signals through the spacetime by using such fluctuations on the probe, that propagate in accordance with a metric which is conformal to the open string metric. Event horizons can emerge in the open string metric when one considers a D-brane with an electric field on its worldvolume. Here, we emphasize the role of and investigate, in details, the causal structure of the resulting open string event horizon and demonstrate, among oth…
This is a write-up of a talk given at the Opava RAGtime meeting in 2011, but it has been updated to include some subsequent related developments. The talk focused on discussion of some aspects of black hole and cosmological horizons under rather general circumstances, and on two different topics related to formation of cosmological structures at different epochs of the universe: virialization of cold dark matter during standard structure formation in the matter-dominated era, and primordial black hole formation during the radiative era.
