We propose a new definition of "horizon molecules" in Causal Set Theory following pioneering work by Dou and Sorkin. The new concept applies for any causal horizon and its intersection with any spacelike hypersurface. In the continuum limit, as the discreteness scale tends to zero, the leading behaviour of the expected number of horizon molecules is shown to be the area of the horizon in discreteness units, up to a dimension dependent factor of order one. We also determine the first order corrections to the continuum value, and show how such corrections can be exploited to obtain further geometrical information about the horizon and the spacelike hypersurface from the causal set.
We discuss how to define a kinematical horizon entropy on a causal set. We extend a recent definition of horizon molecules to a setting with a null hypersurface crossing the horizon. We argue that, as opposed to the spacelike case, this extension fails to yield an entropy local to the hypersurface-horizon intersection in the continuum limit when the causal set approximates a curved spacetime. We then investigate the entropy defined via the Spacetime Mutual Information between two regions of a causal diamond truncated by a causal horizon, and find it does limit to the area of the intersection.
We propose a discrete analogue of null geodesics in causal sets that are approximated by a region of 2d Minkowski spacetime, in the spirit of Kronheimer and Penrose's "grids" and "beams" for an abstract causal space. The causal set analogues are "ladder molecules", whose rungs are linked pairs of elements corresponding loosely to Barton et al's horizon bi-atoms. In 2d a ladder molecule traps a ribbon of null geodesics corresponding to a thickened or fuzzed out horizon. The existence of a ladder between linked pairs of elements in turn provides a generalisation of the horismotic relation to cau…
In this paper, we analyse the causal aspects of evolving marginally trapped surfaces in a D-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetime, sourced by perfect fluid with a cosmological constant. The norm of the normal to the marginally trapped tube is shown to be the product of lie derivatives of the expansion parameter of future outgoing null rays along the incoming and outgoing null directions. We obtain a closed form expression for this norm in terms of principal density, pressure, areal radius and cosmological constant. For the case of a homogeneous fluid distribution, we obtain a simple form…
The recently proposed effective equation of motion for the $4D$- Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity admits a static black hole solution that has, like the Rissner-Nordström charged black hole, two horizons instead of one for the Schwarzschild black hole. This means that the central singularity is timelike instead of spacelike. It should though be noted that in $D\geq5$, the solution always admits only one horizon like the Schwarzshild solution. In the equation defining the horizon, the rescaled Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant appears as a new 'gravitational charge' with a repulsive effect to cause i…
We use the causal horizon entropy to study the asymptotic behaviors of regular AdS black holes. In some literature, the causal horizon entropy is regarded as a generalized holographic $c$-function. In this paper, we apply this idea to the case of regular AdS black holes. We show that the causal horizon entropy decreases to zero at the center of regular AdS black holes and in particular it is stationary because its derivative with respect to the affine parameter approaches zero asymptotically. Meanwhile, the asymptotic behavior of the metric of regular AdS black holes implies that the black hol…

We study quantum fluctuations in the lightcone metric of the 4-d Einstein-Hilbert action via dimensional reduction to Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. In particular, we show that, in Einstein gravity, the causal development of a region in flat Minkowski spacetime, near a horizon defined by light sheets, can be described by an effective two-dimensional dilaton theory. This enables us to make use of known solutions of the JT action, where the spacetime position of a horizon has quantum uncertainty due to metric fluctuations. This quantum uncertainty can be then directly related to the original 4-…
We study some kinematical aspects of quantum fields on causal sets. In particular, we are interested in free scalar fields on a fixed background causal set. We present various results building up to the study of the entanglement entropy of de Sitter horizons using causal sets. We begin by obtaining causal set analogs of Green functions for this field. First we construct the retarded Green function in a Riemann normal neighborhood (RNN) of an arbitrary curved spacetime. Then, we show that in de Sitter and patches of anti-de Sitter spacetimes the construction can be done beyond the RNN. This all…
The low frequency part of the gravitational wave spectrum generated by local physics, such as a phase transition or parametric resonance, is largely fixed by causality, offering a clean window into the early Universe. In this work, this low frequency end of the spectrum is analyzed with an emphasis on a physical understanding, such as the suppressed production of gravitational waves due to the excitation of an over-damped harmonic oscillator and their enhancement due to being frozen out while outside the horizon. Due to the difference between sub-horizon and super-horizon physics, it is inevit…
