In December 1907, Minkowski expressed the Maxwell equations in the very beautiful and compact 4-dimensional form: lor f=-s, lor F^*=0. Here `lor', an abbreviation of Lorentz, represents the 4-dimensional differential operator. We study Minkowski's derivation and show how these equations generalize to their modern premetric form in the framework of tensor and exterior calculus (valid also in general relativity). After mentioning some applications of premetric electrodynamics, we turn to Minkowski's discovery of the energy-momentum tensor of the electromagnetic field. We discuss how he arrived at it and how its premetric formulation looks like.
In 1922, Kottler put forward the program to remove the gravitational potential, the metric of spacetime, from the fundamental equations in physics as far as possible. He successfully applied this idea to Newton's gravitostatics and to Maxwell's electrodynamics, where Kottler recast the field equations in premetric form and specified a metric-dependent constitutive law. We will discuss the basics of the premetric approach and some of its beautiful consequences, like the division of universal constants into two classes. We show that classical electrodynamics can be developed without a metric qui…
The coupling of the electromagnetic field to gravity is discussed. In the premetric axiomatic approach based on the experimentally well established conservation laws of electric charge and magnetic flux, the Maxwell equations are the same irrespective of the presence or absence of gravity. In this sense, one can say that the charge "substratum" and the flux "substratum" are not influenced by the gravitational field directly. However, the interrelation between these fundamental substrata, formalized as the {\it spacetime relation} H=H(F) between the 2-forms of the electromagnetic excitation H a…
Energy minimizing BPS equations and solutions are obtained for a class of models in Maxwell-scalar theory, where an abelian electric charge is immersed in an effective dielectric of a real scalar field. The first order BPS equations are developed using the straightforward on-shell method introduced by Atmaja and Ramadhan. Employment of an auxiliary function of the scalar field allows a scalar potential that displays a tachyonic instability. Consequently, a nontopological scalar soliton is found to form around the charge. Examples and solutions are provided for (1) a point charge or sphere in a…
We prove global existence for Einstein's equations with a charged scalar field for initial conditions sufficiently close to the Minkowski spacetime without matter. The proof relies on generalized wave coordinates adapted to the outgoing Schwarzschild light cones and the estimates for the massless Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system, on the background of metrics asymptotically approaching Schwarzschild at null infinity in such coordinates, by Kauffman. The generalized wave coordinates are obtained from a change of variables, introduced by Lindblad, to asymptotically Schwarzschild coordinates at null in…
We consider the Einstein-Maxwell equations in space-dimension $n$. We point out that the Lindblad-Rodnianski stability proof applies to those equations whatever the space-dimension $n\ge 3$. In even space-time dimension $n+1\ge 6$ we use the standard conformal method on a Minkowski background to give a simple proof that the maximal globally hyperbolic development of initial data sets which are sufficiently close to the data for Minkowski space-time and which are Schwarzschildian outside of a compact set lead to geodesically complete space-times, with a complete Scri, with smooth conformal stru…
Minkowski's concept of a four-dimensional physical space is a central paradigm of modern physics. The three-dimensional Maxwellian electrodynamics is uniquely generalized to the covariant four-dimensional form. Is the (1+3) decomposition of the covariant four-dimensional form unique? How do the different sign assumptions of electrodynamics emerge from this decomposition? Which of these assumptions are fundamental and which of them may be modified? How does the Minkowski space-time metric emerge from this preliminary metric-free construction? In this paper we are looking for answers to the prob…
In this second paper we define a Post-Minkowskian (PM) weak field approximation leading to a linearization of the Hamilton equations of ADM tetrad gravity in the York canonical basis in a family of non-harmonic 3-orthogonal Schwinger time gauges. The York time ${}^3K$ (the relativistic inertial gauge variable, not existing in Newtonian gravity, parametrizing the family and connected to the freedom in clock synchronization, i.e. to the definition of the instantaneous 3-spaces) is put equal to an arbitrary numerical function. A ultraviolet cutoff on the matter allows a consistent linearization, …
We study and report on the class of vacuum Maxwell fields in Minkowski space that possess a non-degenerate, diverging, principle null vector field (null eigenvector field of the Maxwell tensor) that is tangent to a shear-free null geodesics congruence. These congruences can be either surface forming (the tangent vectors proportional to gradients) or not, i.e., the twisting congruences. In the non-twisting case, the associated Maxwell fields are precisely the Lienard-Wiechert fields, i.e., those Maxwell fields arising from an electric monopole moving on an arbitrary worldline. The null geodesic…
We make use of the conformal compactification of Minkowski spacetime $M^{\#}$ to explore a way of describing general, nonlinear Maxwell fields with conformal symmetry. We distinguish the inverse Minkowski spacetime $[M^{\#}]^{-1}$ obtained via conformal inversion, so as to discuss a doubled compactified spacetime on which Maxwell fields may be defined. Identifying $M^{\#}$ with the projective light cone in $(4+2)$-dimensional spacetime, we write two independent conformal-invariant functionals of the $6$-dimensional Maxwellian field strength tensors -- one bilinear, the other trilinear in the f…
In the R-Minkowski space-time, which we recently defined from an appropriate deformed Poisson brackets that reproduce the Fock coordinate transformation, we derive an extended form for Maxwell's equations by using a generalized version of Feynman's approach. Also, we establish in this context the Lorentz force. As in deformed special relativity, modifying the angular momentum in such a way as to restore the R-Lorentz algebra generates the magnetic Dirac monopole.
We begin with the time-dependent electric and magnetic dipole solution of Maxwell's equations in Minkowski space. This Maxwell field is then used to determine the behavior of the gravitational field (the Weyl tensor) as a second-order perturbation off of the Minkowski background. From the Weyl tensor we go on and find the spin-coefficients and the full metric in this approximation. The physical meaning of many of the relations is discussed. In particular we can identify the conservation law of angular momentum that contains an angular momentum flux term.
A complete and explicit classification of all independent local conservation laws of Maxwell's equations in four dimensional Minkowski space is given. Besides the elementary linear conservation laws, and the well-known quadratic conservation laws associated to the conserved stress-energy and zilch tensors, there are also chiral quadratic conservation laws which are associated to a new conserved tensor. The chiral conservation laws possess odd parity under the electric-magnetic duality transformation of Maxwell's equations, in contrast to the even parity of the stress-energy and zilch conservat…
The electromagnetic theory is considered in the framework of the generally covariant approach, that is applied to the analysis of electromagnetism in noninertial coordinate and frame systems. The special-relat\-ivistic formulation of Maxwell's electrodynamics arises in the flat Minkowski spacetime when the general coordinate transformations are restricted to a class of transformations preserving the Minkowski line element. The particular attention is paid to the analysis of the electromagnetism in the noninertial rotating reference system. For the latter case, the general stationary solution o…
Electrostatics on global Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) spacetime is sharply different from that on global Minkowski spacetime. It admits a multipolar expansion with everywhere regular, finite energy solutions, for every multipole moment except the monopole (arXiv:1507.04370). A similar statement holds for global AdS magnetostatics. We show that everywhere regular, finite energy, electric plus magnetic fields exist on AdS in three distinct classes: $(I)$ with non-vanishing total angular momentum $J$; $(II)$ with vanishing $J$ but non-zero angular momentum density, $T^t_φ$; $(III)$ with vanishing $J$ and…
We consider the Maxwell-Lorentz equations, i.e., the equation of motion of a charged dust coupled to Maxwell's equations, on an arbitrary general-relativistic spacetime. We decompose this system of equations into evolution equations and constraints, and we demonstrate that the evolution equations are strongly hyperbolic. This result guarantees that the initial-value problem of the Maxwell-Lorentz equations is well-posed. We illustrate this general result with a discussion of spherically symmetric solutions on Minkowski spacetime.
Starting with a field theoretic approach in Minkowski space, the gravitational energy momentum tensor is derived from the Einstein equations in a straightforward manner. This allows to present them as {\it acceleration tensor} = const. $\times$ {\it total energy momentum tensor}. For flat space cosmology the gravitational energy is negative and cancels the material energy. In the relativistic theory of gravitation a bimetric coupling between the Riemann and Minkowski metrics breaks general coordinate invariance. The case of a positive cosmological constant is considered. A singularity free ver…
We describe here what appears to be a new structure that is hidden in all asymptotically vanishing Maxwell fields possessing a non-vanishing total charge. Though we are dealing with real Maxwell fields on real Minkowski space nevertheless, directly from the asymptotic field one can extract a complex analytic world-line defined in complex Minkowski space that gives a unified Lorentz invariant meaning to both the electric and magnetic dipole moments. In some sense the world-line defines a `complex center of charge' around which both electric and magnetic dipole moments vanish. The question of ho…
We study the coupling of N charged scalar particles plus the electro-magnetic field to ADM tetrad gravity and its canonical formulation in asymptotically Minkowskian space-times without super-translations. We make the canonical transformation to the York canonical basis, where there is a separation between the {\it inertial} (gauge) variables and the {\it tidal} ones inside the gravitational field and a special role of the Eulerian observers associated to the 3+1 splitting of space-time. The Dirac Hamiltonian is weakly equal to the weak ADM energy. The Hamilton equations in Schwinger time gaug…
We explore the BPS limit of asymptotically flat black hole thermodynamics, drawing analogies with recent studies of black holes in anti-de Sitter space. Although ultimately motivated by supersymmetry and quantum gravity, the BPS limit is classically well-defined for the dyonic Kerr-Newman black holes in pure Einstein-Maxwell theory and various generalizations with additional scalars and gauge fields that admit embedding in $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity (for concreteness we consider the STU model). This limit is manifestly different from extremality as it includes a family of rotating Euclidean …
A complete and explicit classification of generalized, or local, symmetries of massless free fields of spin $s \geq 1/2$ is carried out. Up to equivalence, these are found to consists of the conformal symmetries and their duals, new chiral symmetries of order $2s$, and their higher-order extensions obtained by Lie differentiation with respect to conformal Killing vectors. In particular, the results yield a complete classification of generalized symmetries of the Dirac-Weyl neutrino equation, Maxwell's equations, and the linearized gravity equations.
We present a small computer algebra program for use in Maxwell's theory. The Maxwell equations and the energy-momentum current of the electromagnetic field are formulated in the language of exterior differential forms. The corresponding program can be applied (in the presence of a gravitational field) in curved Riemannian spacetime as well as in flat Minkowski spacetime in inertial or {\em non-inertial} frames. Our program is written for the computer algebra system REDUCE with the help of the EXCALC package for exterior differential forms.\par The two major advantages of this modern approch to…

We investigate properties of solutions of the scalar wave equation and Maxwell's equations on Minkowski space with helical symmetry. Existence of local and global solutions with this symmetry is demonstrated with and without sources. The asymptotic properties of the solutions are analyzed. We show that the Newman--Penrose retarded and advanced scalars exhibit specific symmetries and generalized peeling properties.
A duality symmetric formulation of linearized gravity has been introduced by Barnett and used to show the conservation of helicity. However, the relation between helicity and spin as well as the separate conservation of the spin and orbital parts of angular momentum, which is known to hold in Maxwell theory, was not considered. These conservation laws are known to follow from the conservation of the so-called helicity array, an analog of the zilch tensor, which includes helicity, spin, and spin-flux or infra-zilch. In the present paper we prove the conservation of spin and orbital angular mome…
We study compactification of extra dimensions in a theory of Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) type gravity. We investigate the solution for Minkowski spacetime with an $S^2$ extra space as well as that for de Sitter spacetime ($S^4$) with an $S^2$ extra space. They are derived by the effective potential method in the presence of the magnetic flux on the extra sphere. We also consider the higher dimensional generalization of the solutions. We find that, in a certain model, the radius of the extra space has a minimum value independent of the higher-dimensional Newton constant in weak-field limit.
A 5-dimensional Einstein spacetime with (non)vanishing cosmological constant is analyzed in detail. The metric is in close analogy with the 4-dimensional massless uncharged C-metric in many aspects. The coordinate system, horizons and causal structures, relations to standard de Sitter, anti de Sitter and Minkowski vacua are investigated. After a boost and Kaluza-Klein reduction, we get an exact solution of 4-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Liouville theory which reduces to a solution to Einstein-Liouville theory in the limit of zero boost velocity and to that of Einstein-Maxwell-diliton theory in…
Making use of twistor structures and the Kerr theorem for shear-free null geodesic congruences, an infinite family of electromagnetic fields satisfying the homogeneous Maxwell equations in flat Minkowski and the associated curved Kerr-Schild backgrounds is obtained for any such congruence in a purely algebraic way. Simple examples of invariant axisymmetric Maxwell fields are presented.
We show that (specifically scaled) equations of shear-free null geodesic congruences on the Minkowski space-time possess intrinsic self-dual, restricted gauge and algebraic structures. The complex eikonal, Weyl 2-spinor, $SL(2,\mathbb C)$ Yang-Mills and complex Maxwell fields, the latter produced by integer-valued electric charges ("elementary" for the Kerr-like congruences), can all be explicitly associated with any shear-free null geodesic congruence. Using twistor variables, we derive the general solution of the equations of the shear-free null geodesic congruence (as a modification of the …
Conformally compactified (3+1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime may be identified with the projective light cone in (4+2)-dimensional spacetime. In the latter spacetime the special conformal group acts via rotations and boosts, and conformal inversion acts via reflection in a single coordinate. Hexaspherical coordinates facilitate dimensional reduction of Maxwell electromagnetic field strength tensors to (3+1) from (4 + 2) dimensions. Here we focus on the operation of conformal inversion in different coordinatizations, and write some useful equations. We then write a conformal invariant and a p…
After having obtained previously an extended first approximation of Maxwell's equations in Fock's nonlinear relativity, we propose here the corresponding exact form. In order to achieve this goal, we were inspired mainly by the special relativistic version of Feynman's proof from which we constructed a formal approach more adapted to the noncommutative algebra. This reasoning lets us establish the exact form of the generalized first group of Maxwell's equations. To deduce the second one, we have imposed the electric-magnetic duality. As in the k-Minkowski space-time, the generalized Lorentz fo…
The Maxwell field with a general gauge fixing (GF) term is nontrivial, not only the longitudinal and temporal modes are mixed up in the field equations, but also unwanted consequences might arise from the GF term. We derive the complete set of solutions in de Sitter space, and implement the covariant canonical quantization which restricts the residual gauge transformation down to a quantum residual gauge transformation. Then, in the Gupta-Bleuler (GB) physical state, we calculate the stress tensor which is amazingly independent of the gauge fixing constant and is also invariant under the quant…
By treating the real Maxwell Field and real linearized Einstein equations as being imbedded in complex Minkowski space, one can interpret magnetic moments and spin-angular momentum as arising from a charge and mass monopole source moving along a complex world line in the complex Minkowski space. In the circumstances where the complex center of mass world-line coincides with the complex center of charge world-line, the gyromagnetic ratio is that of the Dirac electron.
We consider the interaction between gravitational and electromagnetic radiation propagating on a Minkowski background and look into the effects of the former upon the latter. Not surprisingly, the coupling between these two sources leads to gravitationally driven electromagnetic waves. At the second perturbative level, the driving force appears as the superposition of two waves, the properties of which are decided by the initial conditions. We find that the Weyl-Maxwell interaction typically leads to electromagnetic beat-like signals and, in some cases, to the resonant amplification of the dri…
In this article, we study the coupling of the Einstein field equations of general relativity to a family of models of nonlinear electromagnetic fields. The family comprises all covariant electromagnetic models that satisfy the following criteria: they are derivable from a sufficiently regular Lagrangian, they reduce to the linear Maxwell model in the weak-field limit, and their corresponding energy-momentum tensors satisfy the dominant energy condition. Our main result is a proof of the global nonlinear stability of the 1 + 3-dimensional Minkowski spacetime solution to the coupled system for a…
The usual pre-metric Maxwell equations of electromagnetism in Minkowski space are extended to five dimensions, and the equations of linear five-dimensional electromagnetic waves are obtained from them by using the simplest electromagnetic constitutive law. The role of the dispersion law for five-dimensional plane waves in dictating the most appropriate extension of the four-dimensional Minkowski space metric to the five-dimensional one is discussed. The fact that the five-dimensional dispersion law includes both massless waves and massive ones is emphasized, as well as the fact that one can ob…
On Minkowski spacetime, the angular momentum flux through null infinity of Maxwell fields, computed using the stress-energy tensor, depends not only on the radiative degrees of freedom, but also on the Coulombic parts. However, the angular momentum also can be computed using other conserved currents associated with a Killing field, such as the Noether current and the canonical current. The flux computed using these latter two currents is purely radiative. A priori, it is not clear which of these is to be considered the true flux of angular momentum for Maxwell fields. This situation carries ov…
We discuss the limit of vanishing $G$ (Newton's constant of universal gravitation) of the maximal analytically extended Kerr--Newman electrovacuum spacetimes {represented in Boyer--Lindquist coordinates}. We investigate the topologically nontrivial spacetime emerging in this limit and show that it consists of two copies of flat Minkowski spacetime glued at a timelike solid cylinder. As $G\to 0$, the electromagnetic fields of the Kerr-Newman spacetimes converge to nontrivial solutions of Maxwell's equations on this background spacetime. We show how to obtain these fields by solving Maxwell's eq…
We present a time-dependent solution of the Maxwell equations in the Einstein universe, whose electric and magnetic fields, as seen by the stationary observers, are aligned with the Clifford parallels of the $3$-sphere $S^3$. The conformal equivalence between Minkowski's spacetime and (a region of) the Einstein cylinder is then exploited in order to obtain a knotted, finite energy, radiating solution of the Maxwell equations in flat spacetime. We also discuss similar electromagnetic fields in expanding closed Friedmann models, and compute the matter content of such configurations.
On the basis of all commutation relations of the k-deformed phase space incorporating the k-Minkowski space-time, we have derived in this paper an extended first approximation of both Maxwell's equations and Lorentz force in doubly (or deformed) special relativity (DSR). For this purpose, we have used our approach of the special relativistic version of Feynman's proof by which we have established the explicit formulations of electric and magnetic fields. As in Fock's nonlinear relativity (FNLR), the laws of electrodynamics depend on the particle mass which therefore constitutes a common point …
A variational derivative of a Lagrangian with regard to the metric tensor is used in classical field models to define Hilbert's energy-momentum tensor for a matter field. In solid-state physics, constitutive relationships between fundamental field variables are a topic that is covered by a broad variety of models. In this context, a constitutive tensor of higher order replaces the of the second-order metric tensor. For the classical field models of gravity and electrodynamics, a similar premetric description with a linear constitutive relation has recently presented. In this paper, we analyze …
We show that for asymptotically vanishing Maxwell fields in Minkowski space with non-vanishing total charge, one can find a unique geometric structure, a null direction field, at null infinity. From this structure a unique complex analytic world-line in complex Minkowski space that can be found and then identified as the complex center of charge. By ''sitting'' - in an imaginary sense, on this world-line both the (intrinsic) electric and magnetic dipole moments vanish. The (intrinsic) magnetic dipole moment is (in some sense) obtained from the `distance' the complex the world line is from the …
The 2-surface characterization of special classical radiative Higgs-, Yang-Mills and linear zero-rest-mass (l.z.r.m) fields with any spin is investigated. We determine all the zero quasi-local mass Higgs- and Yang-Mills field configurations with compact semisimple gauge groups, and show that they are plane waves (provided the Higgs field is massless and linear) and appropriate generalizations of plane waves (`Yang-Mills pp-waves'), respectively. A tensor field (generalizing the energy-momentum tensor for the Maxwell field and of the Bel-Robinson tensor for the linearized gravitational field) i…
This note surveys how energy generation and strengthening has been used to prove Morawetz estimates for various field equations in Minkowski space, the exterior of the Schwarzschild spacetime, and the exterior of the Kerr spacetime. It briefly outlines an approach to proving a decay estimate for the Maxwell equation outside a Kerr black hole.
