We begin with the time-dependent electric and magnetic dipole solution of Maxwell's equations in Minkowski space. This Maxwell field is then used to determine the behavior of the gravitational field (the Weyl tensor) as a second-order perturbation off of the Minkowski background. From the Weyl tensor we go on and find the spin-coefficients and the full metric in this approximation. The physical meaning of many of the relations is discussed. In particular we can identify the conservation law of angular momentum that contains an angular momentum flux term.
We study the matching of a general spherically symmetric spacetime with a Vaidya-Reissner-Nordstrom solution. To that end, we study the properties of spherically symmetric electromagnetic fields and develop the proper gravitational and electromagnetic junction conditions. We prove that generic spacetimes can be matched to a Vaidya-Reissner-Nordstrom solution or one of its specializations, and that these matchings have clear physical interpretations. Furthermore, the non-spacelike nature of the matching hypersurface is proved under very general hypotheses. We obtain the fundamental result that …
We calculate the unregularized monopole and dipole contributions to the self-force acting on a particle of small mass in a circular orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole. From a self-force point of view, these non-radiating modes are as important as the radiating modes with l greater than 2. In fact, we demonstrate how the dipole self-force contributes to the dynamics even at the Newtonian level. The self-acceleration of a particle is an inherently gauge-dependent concept, but the Lorenz gauge is often preferred because of its hyperbolic wave operator. Our results are in the Lorenz gauge and…
It is proven that a solution to the Einstein-Maxwell equations whose gravitational and electromagnetic radiation fields vanish is in fact stationary in a neighbourhood of spatial infinity. That is, if the Weyl and Faraday tensors decay suitably fast, then there exists a time-like Killing vector field in the region outside the bifurcate horizon of a sphere of sufficiently large radius. In particular, truly dynamical time-periodic electrovacuum spacetimes do not exist. This is an extension of earlier work by Alexakis and Schlue and Bičák, Sholtz and Tod to include electromagnetism.
We give a non-static exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations (with null fluid), which is a non-static magnetic charge generalization to the Bonnor-Vaidya solution and describes the gravitational and electromagnetic fields of a nonrotating massive radiating dyon. In addition, using the energy-momentum pseudotensors of Einstein and Landau and Lifshitz we obtain the energy, momentum, and power output of the radiating dyon and find that both prescriptions give the same result.
In this manuscript, we show that the external Schwarzschild metric can be a good approximation of exact black hole solutions of entangled relativity. Since entangled relativity cannot be defined from vacuum, the demonstrations need to rely on the definition of matter fields. The electromagnetic field being the easiest (and perhaps the only) existing matter field with infinite range to consider, we study the case of a charged black hole -- for which the solution of entangled relativity and a dilaton theory agree -- as well as the case of a pure radiation -- for which the solution of entangled r…
This paper is aimed to study the influence of electromagnetic field and tilted congruences on the dynamical features of self-gravitating system. We shall explore the stability of homogeneous energy density in the background of Maxwell-Palatini $f(R)$ gravity. In this respect, we have considered an irrotational non-static planar geometry which is assumed to have two different types of gravitating sources. The role of tilted congruences and the geodesic motion of an evolving system is studied through the divergence of the entropy vector field. The condition for the emergence of Minskoskian cavit…
We present a time-dependent solution of the Maxwell equations in the Einstein universe, whose electric and magnetic fields, as seen by the stationary observers, are aligned with the Clifford parallels of the $3$-sphere $S^3$. The conformal equivalence between Minkowski's spacetime and (a region of) the Einstein cylinder is then exploited in order to obtain a knotted, finite energy, radiating solution of the Maxwell equations in flat spacetime. We also discuss similar electromagnetic fields in expanding closed Friedmann models, and compute the matter content of such configurations.
We report on critical phenomena in the gravitational collapse of electromagnetic waves. Generalizing earlier results that focused on dipole electromagnetic waves, we here compare with quadrupole waves in axisymmetry. We perform numerical simulations of dipole and quadrupole wave initial data, fine-tuning both sets of data to the onset of black hole formation in order to study the critical solution and related critical phenomena. We observe that different multipole moments have different symmetries, indicating that the critical solution for electromagnetic waves cannot be unique, at least not g…
We summarize results about Robinson-Trautman spacetimes in the presence of an aligned $p$-form Maxwell field and an arbitrary cosmological constant in $n\ge 4$ dimensions. While in odd dimensions the solutions reduce to static black holes dressed with an electric and a magnetic field (with an Einstein space horizon), in even dimensions $2p=n$ they may also describe black holes gaining (or losing) mass by receiving (or emitting) electromagnetic radiation. The Weyl type of the spacetimes is also briefly discussed in all the possible cases.
We show that for asymptotically vanishing Maxwell fields in Minkowski space with non-vanishing total charge, one can find a unique geometric structure, a null direction field, at null infinity. From this structure a unique complex analytic world-line in complex Minkowski space that can be found and then identified as the complex center of charge. By ''sitting'' - in an imaginary sense, on this world-line both the (intrinsic) electric and magnetic dipole moments vanish. The (intrinsic) magnetic dipole moment is (in some sense) obtained from the `distance' the complex the world line is from the …
The radiation reaction fields are calculated for an accelerated changing dipole in scalar and electromagnetic radiation fields. The acceleration reaction is shown to alter the damping of a time varying dipole in the EM case, but not the scalar case. In the EM case, the dipole radiation reaction field can exert a force on an accelerated monopole charge associated with the accelerated dipole. The radiation reaction of an accelerated charge does not exert a torque on an accelerated magnetic dipole, but an accelerated dipole does exert a force on the charge. The technique used is that originally d…
The characteristic features were found in the electromagnetic spectrum of radiation from free falling dipole, when it is fall radially into a Schwarzschild black hole. These features can be used as another method for the black hole mass determinating. Also, these features can be used for the determination some characteristics of the magnetosphere or the accretion disk around the black hole.
Recently there have been suggestions that the Lorentz force law is inconsistent with special relativity. This is difficult to understand, since Einstein invented relativity in order to reconcile electrodynamics with mechanics. Here we investigate the momentum of an electric charge and a magnetic dipole in the frame in which both are at rest, and in an infinitesimally boosted frame in which both have a common velocity. We show that for a dipole composed of a magnetic monopole-antimonopole pair the torque is zero in both frames, while if the dipole is a point dipole, the torque is not zero, but …
We show that photons may be redshifted or blueshifted when interacting with the field of an overcritical dipole, which incorporates the one-loop QED corrections coming from vacuum polarization. Using the effective metric, it follows that such effect depends on the polarization of the photon. The shifts, plotted against the azimuthal angle for various values of the magnetic field, may show an intensity comparable to the gravitational redshift for a magnetar. To obtain these results, we have corrected previous literature.
We study Robinson-Trautman spacetimes in the presence of an aligned p-form Maxwell field and an arbitrary cosmological constant in n>=4 dimensions. As it turns out, the character of these exact solutions depends significantly on the (relative) value of n and p. In odd dimensions the solutions reduce to static black holes dressed by an electric and a magnetic field and whose horizon is an Einstein space (further constrained by the Einstein-Maxwell equations) -- both the Weyl and Maxwell type are D. Even dimensions, however, open up more possibilities. In particular, when 2p=n there exist non-st…
The free fall of electric charges and dipoles, radial and freely falling into the Schwarzschild black hole event horizon, was considered. Inverse effect of electromagnetic fields on the black hole is neglected. Dipole was considered as a point particle, so the deformation associated with exposure by tidal forces are neglected. According to the theorem, "the lack of hair" of black holes, multipole magnetic fields must be fully emitted by multipole fall into a black hole. The spectrum of electromagnetic radiation power for these multipoles (monopole and dipole) was found. Differences were found …
Relativistic stars are endowed with intense electromagnetic fields but are also subject to oscillations of various types. We here investigate the impact that oscillations have on the electric and magnetic fields external to a relativistic star in vacuum. In particular, modelling the star as a relativistic polytrope with infinite conductivity, we consider the solution of the general relativistic Maxwell equations both in the vicinity of the stellar surface and far from it, once a perturbative velocity field is specified. In this first paper we present general analytic expressions that are not s…
