We study the coupling of N charged scalar particles plus the electro-magnetic field to ADM tetrad gravity and its canonical formulation in asymptotically Minkowskian space-times without super-translations. We make the canonical transformation to the York canonical basis, where there is a separation between the {\it inertial} (gauge) variables and the {\it tidal} ones inside the gravitational field and a special role of the Eulerian observers associated to the 3+1 splitting of space-time. The Dirac Hamiltonian is weakly equal to the weak ADM energy. The Hamilton equations in Schwinger time gauges are given explicitly. In the York basis they are naturally divided in four sets: a) the contracted Bianchi identities; b) the equations for the inertial gauge variables; c) the equations for the tidal ones; d) the equations for matter. Finally we give the restriction of the Hamilton equations and of the constraints to the family of {\it non-harmonic 3-orthogonal} gauges, in which the instantaneous Riemannian 3-spaces have a diagonal 3-metric. The non-fixed inertial gauge variable ${}^3K$ (the freedom in the clock synchronization convention) gives rise to a negative kinetic term in the weak ADM energy vanishing only in the gauges with ${}^3K = 0$: is it relevant for dark energy and back-reaction? In the second paper there will be the linearization of the theory to obtain Hamiltonian post-Minkowskian gravity with asymptotic Minkowski background, non-flat instantaneous 3-spaces and no post-Newtonian expansion. This will allow to explore the inertial effects induced by the York time ${}^3K$ in non-flat 3-spaces and to check how much dark matter can be explained as an inertial aspect of Einstein's general relativity.
Brown's formulation of dynamical perfect fluids in Minkowski space-time is extended to ADM tetrad gravity in globally hyperbolic, asymptotically Minkowskian space-times. For the dust we get the Hamiltonian description in closed form in the York canonical basis, where we can separate the inertial gauge variables of the gravitational field in the non-Euclidean 3-spaces of global non-inertial frames from the physical tidal ones. After writing the Hamilton equations of the dust, we identify the sector of irrotational motions and the gauge fixings forcing the dust 3-spaces to coincide with the 3-sp…
We find the Hamiltonian expression in the York basis of canonical ADM tetrad gravity of the 4-Weyl tensor of the asymptotically Minkowskian space-time. Like for the 4-Riemann tensor we find a radar tensor (whose components are 4-scalars due to the use of radar 4-coordinates), which coincides with the 4-Weyl tensor on-shell on the solutions of Einstein's equations. Then, by using the Hamiltonian null tetrads, we find the Hamiltonian expression of the Weyl scalars of the Newman-Perose approach and of the four eigenvalues of the 4-Weyl tensor. After having introduced the Dirac observables of cano…
A new parametrization of the 3-metric allows to find explicitly a York map in canonical ADM tetrad gravity, the two pairs of physical tidal degrees of freedom and 14 gauge variables. These gauge quantities (generalized inertial effects) are all configurational except the trace ${}^3K(τ,\vec σ)$ of the extrinsic curvature of the instantaneous 3-spaces $Σ_τ$ (clock synchronization convention) of a non-inertial frame. The Dirac hamiltonian is the sum of the weak ADM energy $E_{ADM} = \int d^3σ{\cal E}_{ADM}(τ,\vec σ)$ (whose density is coordinate-dependent due to the inertial potentials) and of t…
We conclude the study of the Post-Minkowskian linearization of ADM tetrad gravity in the York canonical basis for asymptotically Minkowskian space-times in the family of non-harmonic 3-orthogonal gauges parametrized by the York time ${}^3K(τ, \vec σ)$ (the inertial gauge variable, not existing in Newton gravity, describing the general relativistic remnant of the freedom in clock synchronization in the definition of the instantaneous 3-spaces). As matter we consider only N scalar point particles with a Grassmann regularization of the self-energies and with a ultraviolet cutoff making possible t…
By using the York canonical basis of ADM tetrad gravity, in a formulation using radar 4-coordinates for the parametrization of the 3+1 splitting of the space-time, it is possible to write the 4-Riemann tensor of a globally hyperbolic, asymptotically Minkowskian space-time as a Hamiltonian tensor, whose components are 4-scalars with respect to the ordinary world 4-coordinates, plus terms vanishing due to Einstein's equations. Therefore "on-shell" we find the expression of the Hamiltonian 4-Riemann tensor. Moreover, the 3+1 splitting of the space-time used to define the phase space allows us to …
Dirac constraint theory allows to identify the York canonical basis (diagonalizing the York-Lichnerowicz approach) in ADM tetrad gravity for asymptotically Minkowskian space-times without super-translations. This allows to identify the inertial (gauge) and tidal (physical) degrees of freedom of the gravitational field and to interpret Ashtekar variables in these space-times. The use of radar 4-coordinates centered on a time-like observer allows to connect the 3+1 splittings of space-time with the relativistic metrology used in atomic physics and astronomy. The asymptotic ADM Poincaré group rep…
In first order formulation of pure gravity, we find a new class of solutions to the equations of motion represented by degenerate four-geometries. These configurations are described by non- invertible tetrads with two zero eigenvalues and admit non-vanishing torsion. The homogeneous ones among these infinitely many degenerate solutions admit a geometric classification provided by the three fundamental geometries that a closed two-surface can accomodate, namely, E^2 , S^2 and H^2.
ADM tetrad gravity is an Hamiltonian reformulation of General Relativity which gives new insight to the Dark Matter Problem. We impose constraints on the parameter space of ADM tetrad gravity with a Yukawa-like ansatz for the trace of the extrinsic curvature of the 3D hypersurfaces by fitting the orbit of the S2 star around the Black Hole in the Galactic center and using the perihelia of some of the planets of the Solar System. We find very thight constraints on the \emph{strength} of the coupling, $4.2 \,\times \, 10^{-4} \, \text{AU}\,\lesssim \, δ\, \lesssim \, 4.6 \, \times \, 10^{-4} \, \…
A review is given of the theory of non-inertial frames (with the associated inertial effects and the study of the non-relativistic limit) in Minkowski space-time, of parametrized Minkowski theories and of the rest-frame instant form of dynamics for isolated systems admitting a Lagrangian description. The relevance and gauge equivalence of the clock synchronization conventions for the identification of the instantaneous 3-spaces (Euclidean only in inertial frames) are described. Then this formalism is applied to tetrad gravity in globally hyperbolic, asymptotically Minkowskian space-times witho…
A new version of tetrad gravity in globally hyperbolic, asymptotically flat at spatial infinity spacetimes with Cauchy surfaces diffeomorphic to $R^3$ is obtained by using a new parametrization of arbitrary cotetrads to define a set of configurational variables to be used in the ADM metric action. Seven of the fourteen first class constraints have the form of the vanishing of canonical momenta. A comparison is made with other models of tetrad gravity and with the ADM canonical formalism for metric gravity.

The Lazarus project was designed to make the most of limited 3D binary black-hole simulations, through the identification of perturbations at late times, and subsequent evolution of the Weyl scalar $Ψ_4$ via the Teukolsky formulation. Here we report on new developments, employing the concept of the ``quasi-Kinnersley'' (transverse) frame, valid in the full nonlinear regime, to analyze late-time numerical spacetimes that should differ only slightly from Kerr. This allows us to extract the essential information about the background Kerr solution, and through this, to identify the radiation prese…
A study of proper teleparallel conformal vector field in spherically symmetric static space-times is given using the direct integration technique and diagonal tetrads. In this study we show that the above space-times do not admit proper teleparallel conformal vector fields.

After a review of the canonical reduction to the rest-frame Wigner-covariant instant form of standard theories in Minkowski spacetime, a new formulation of tetrad gravity is introduced. Its canonical reduction, also in presence of N scalar particles, is done. The modification of the ADM formulation to solve the deparametrization problem of general relativity (how to recover the rest-frame instant form for G=0), is presented.
In the framework of the rest-frame instant form of tetrad gravity, where the Hamiltonian is the weak ADM energy ${\hat E}_{ADM}$, we define a special completely fixed 3-orthogonal Hamiltonian gauge, corresponding to a choice of {\it non-harmonic} 4-coordinates, in which the independent degrees of freedom of the gravitational field are described by two pairs of canonically conjugate Dirac observables (DO) $r_{\bar a}(τ,\vec σ)$, $π_{\bar a}(τ,\vec σ)$, $\bar a = 1,2$. We define a Hamiltonian linearization of the theory, i.e. gravitational waves, {\it without introducing any background 4-metric}…
The only efficient and robust method of generating consistent initial data in general relativity is the conformal technique initiated by Lichnerowicz and perfected by York. In the spatially compact case, the complete scheme consists of the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) Hamiltonian and momentum constraints, the ADM Euler-Lagrange equations, York's constant-mean-curvature (CMC) condition, and a lapse-fixing equation (LFE) that ensures propagation of the CMC condition by the Euler-Lagrange equations. The Hamiltonian constraint is rewritten as the Lichnerowicz-York equation for the conformal factor …

In special and general relativity the synchronization convention of distant clocks may be simulated with a mathematical definition of global non-inertial frames (the only ones existing in general relativity due to the equivalence principle) with well-defined instantaneous 3-spaces. For asymptotically Minkowskian Einstein space-times this procedure can be used at the Hamiltonian level in the York canonical basis, where it is possible for the first time to disentangle tidal gravitational degrees of freedom from gauge inertial ones. The most important inertial effect connected with clock synchron…
After a study of the Hamiltonian group of gauge transformations of canonical tetrad gravity on globally hyperbolic, asymptotically flat at spatial infinity, spacetimes with Cauchy hypersurfaces $Σ_τ$ diffeomorphic to $R^3, we find the dependence of the cotriads on $Σ_τ$ and of their momenta on the six parameters associated with rotations and space diffeomorphisms. The choice of 3-coordinates on $Σ_τ$ is equivalent to the parametrization of the cotriads with the last three degrees of freedom individuating the 3-geometries. The Shanmugadhasan canonical transformation, corresponding to the choice…
A discussion of asymptotic weak and strong Poincare' charges in metric gravity is given to identify the proper Hamiltonian boundary conditions. The asymptotic part of the lapse and shift functions is put equal to their analogues on Minkowski hyperplanes. By adding Dirac's ten extra variables at spatial infinity, metric gravity is extended to incorporate Dirac's ten extra first class constraints (the new ten momenta equal to the weak Poincare' charges) and this allows its deparametrization to parametrized Minkowski theories restricted to spacelike hyperplanes. The absence of supertranslations i…
Initial value problem in General Relativity is often solved numerically; with only a few exceptions one of which is the "model" solution of Bowen and York where an analytical form of the solution is available. The solution describes a dynamical, time-asymmetric, gravitating system with mass and linear momentum. Here we revisit this solution and correct an error which turns out to be important for identifying the energy-content of the solution. Depending on the linear momentum, the ratio of the non-stationary part of the initial energy to the total ADM energy takes values between $[0, 0.592)$. …
We extract the Weyl scalars $Ψ_0$ and $Ψ_4$ in the quasi-Kinnersley tetrad by finding initially the (gauge--, tetrad--, and background--independent) transverse quasi-Kinnersley frame. This step still leaves two undetermined degrees of freedom: the ratio $|Ψ_0|/|Ψ_4|$, and one of the phases (the product $|Ψ_0|\cdot |Ψ_4|$ and the {\em sum} of the phases are determined by the so-called BB radiation scalar). The residual symmetry ("spin/boost") can be removed by gauge fixing of spin coefficients in two steps: First, we break the boost symmetry by requiring that $ρ$ corresponds to a global constan…
Recently, Choquet-Bruhat and York and Abrahams, Anderson, Choquet-Bruhat, and York (AACY) have cast the 3+1 evolution equations of general relativity in gauge-covariant and causal ``first-order symmetric hyperbolic form,'' thereby cleanly separating physical from gauge degrees of freedom in the Cauchy problem for general relativity. A key ingredient in their construction is a certain wave equation which governs the light-speed propagation of the extrinsic curvature tensor. Along a similar line, we construct a related wave equation which, as the key equation in a system, describes vacuum genera…
It is a commonplace that any theory can be written in any coordinates via tensor calculus. But it is claimed that spinors as such cannot be represented in coordinates in a curved space-time. What general covariance means for theories with fermions is thus unclear. In fact both commonplaces are wrong. Though it is not widely known, Ogievetsky and Polubarinov (OP) constructed spinors in coordinates in 1965, helping to spawn nonlinear group representations. Locally, these spinors resemble the orthonormal basis or "tetrad" formalism in the symmetric gauge, but they are conceptually self-sufficient…
Based on the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) canonical formulation of general relativity, a canonical formulation of gravitationally interacting classical spinning-object systems is given to linear order in spin. The constructed position, linear momentum and spin variables fulfill standard Poisson bracket relations. A spatially symmetric time gauge for the tetrad field is introduced. The achieved formulation is of fully reduced form without unresolved constraints, supplementary, gauge, or coordinate conditions. The canonical field momentum is not related to the extrinsic curvature of spacelike hyp…
The Newman-Penrose formalism may be used in numerical relativity to extract coordinate-invariant information about gravitational radiation emitted in strong-field dynamical scenarios. The main challenge in doing so is to identify a null tetrad appropriately adapted to the simulated geometry such that Newman-Penrose quantities computed relative to it have an invariant physical meaning. In black hole perturbation theory, the Teukolsky formalism uses such adapted tetrads, those which differ only perturbatively from the background Kinnersley tetrad. At late times, numerical simulations of astrophy…

James L. Anderson analyzed the novelty of Einstein's theory of gravity as its lack of "absolute objects." Michael Friedman's related work has been criticized by Roger Jones and Robert Geroch for implausibly admitting as absolute the timelike 4-velocity field of dust in cosmological models in Einstein's theory. Using the Rosen-Sorkin Lagrange multiplier trick, I complete Anna Maidens's argument that the problem is not solved by prohibiting variation of absolute objects in an action principle. Recalling Anderson's proscription of "irrelevant" variables, I generalize that proscription to locally …
We develop the canonical ADM approach to 2+1 dimensional gravity in presence of point particles. The instantaneous York gauge can be applied for open universes or universes with the topology of the sphere. The sequence of canonical ADM equations is solved in terms of the conformal factor. A simple derivation is given for the solution of the two body problem. A geometrical characterization is given for the apparent singularities occurring in the N-body problem and it is shown how the Garnier hamiltonian system arises in the ADM treatment by considering the time development of the conformal fact…
We consider a solution to the problem of time in quantum gravity by deparameterisation of the ADM action in terms of York time, a parameter proportional to the extrinsic curvature of a spatial hypersurface. We study a minisuperspace model together with a homogeneous scalar field, for which we can solve the Hamiltonian constraint exactly and arrive at an explicit expression for the physical (non-vanishing) Hamiltonian. The scale factor and associated momentum cease to be dynamical variables, leaving the scalar field as the only physical degree of freedom. We investigate the resulting classical …
A Hamiltonian linearization of the rest-frame instant form of tetrad gravity (gr-qc/0302084), where the Hamiltonian is the weak ADM energy ${\hat E}_{ADM}$, in a completely fixed (non harmonic) 3-orthogonal Hamiltonian gauge is defined. For the first time this allows to find an explicit solution of all the Hamiltonian constraints and an associated linearized solution of Einstein's equations. It corresponds to background-independent gravitational waves in a well defined post-Minkowskian Christodoulou-Klainermann space-time.
The Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity on a null surface is established in the teleparallel geometry. No particular gauge conditons on the tetrads are imposed, such as the time gauge condition. By means of a 3+1 decomposition the resulting Hamiltonian arises as a completely constrained system. However, it is structurally different from the the standard Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) type formulation. In this geometrical framework the basic field quantities are tetrads that transform under the global SO(3,1) and the torsion tensor.
We define the {\it rest-frame instant form} of tetrad gravity restricted to Christodoulou-Klainermann spacetimes. After a study of the Hamiltonian group of gauge transformations generated by the 14 first class constraints of the theory, we define and solve the multitemporal equations associated with the rotation and space diffeomorphism constraints, finding how the cotriads and their momenta depend on the corresponding gauge variables. This allows to find quasi-Shanmugadhasan canonical transformation to the class of 3-orthogonal gauges and to find the Dirac observables for superspace in these …
We study how the standard definitions of ADM mass and Brown-York quasi-local energy generalize to pure Lovelock gravity. The quasi-local energy is renormalized using the background subtraction prescription and we consider its limit for large surfaces. We find that the large surface limit vanishes for asymptotically flat fall-off conditions except in Einstein gravity. This problem is avoided by focusing on the variation of the quasi-local energy which correctly approaches the variation of the ADM mass for large surfaces. As a result, we obtain a new simple formula for the ADM mass in pure Lovel…
A Hamiltonian approach to the equations of general relativity is proposed using the powerful mathematical language of multivector-valued differential forms. In the approach, the gravitational coordinates are the 12 spatial components of the line interval (the vierbein) including their antisymmetric parts, and their 12 conjugate momenta. A feature of the proposed formalism is that it allows Lorentz gauge freedoms to be imposed on the Lorentz connections rather than on the vierbein, which may facilitate numerical integration in some challenging problems. The 40 Hamilton's equations comprise 12 +…
There is a review of the physical theories needing Dirac-Bergmann theory of constraints at the Hamiltonian level due to the existence of gauge symmetries. It contains: i) the treatment of systems of point particles in special relativity both in inertial and non-inertial frames with a Wigner-covariant way of eliminating relative times in relativistic bound states; ii) the description of the electro-magnetic field in relativistic atomic physics and of Yang-Mills fields in absence of Gribov ambiguity in particle physics; iii) the identification of the inertial gauge variables and of the physical …
The canonical ADM equations are solved in terms of the conformal factor in the instantaneous York gauge. A simple derivation is given for the solution of the two body problem. A geometrical characterization is given for the apparent singularities occurring in the N-body problem and it is shown how the Garnier hamiltonian system arises in the ADM treatment by considering the time development of the conformal factor at the locations where the extrinsic curvature tensor vanishes. The equations of motion for the position of the particles and of the apparent singularities and also the time dependen…
We show by an almost elementary calculation that the ADM mass of an asymptotically flat space can be computed as a limit involving a rate of change of area of a closed 2-surface. The result is essentially the same as that given by Brown and York. We will prove this result in two ways, first by direct calculation from the original formula as given by Arnowitt, Deser and Misner and second as a corollary of an earlier result by Brewin for the case of simplicial spaces.
A review is given of the formulation of relativistic atomic theory, in which there is an explicit realization of the Poincare' generators, both in the inertial and in the non-inertial rest-frame instant form of dynamics in Minkowski space-time. This implies the need to solve the problem of the relativistic center of mass of an isolated system and to describe the transitions from different conventions for clock synchronization, namely for the identifications of instantaneous 3-spaces, as gauge transformations. These problems, stemming from the Lorentz signature of space-time, are a source of no…
In this paper, model of charged gravastar under $f(T)$ modified gravity is obtained. The model has been explored by taking the diagonal tetrad field of static spacetime together with electric charge. To solve the Einstein-Maxwell field equations, along with $f(T)$ gravity, we assume the existence of a conformal Killing vector which relates between geometry and matter through the Einstein-Maxwell field equations by an inheritance symmetry. We study several cases of interest to explore physically valid features of the solutions. Some physical properties of the model are discussed and we match ou…
The Hamiltonian formulation of the gravitational sector of the Standard-Model Extension (SME) with nondynamical fields $u$ and $s^{μν}$ is studied. We provide the relevant Hamiltonians that describe the constrained phase space and the dynamics of the induced metric on the ADM hypersurface. The generalization of the Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary term has been crucial to preventing second time-derivatives of the metric tensor in the Hamiltonians. By extracting the dynamics and constraints from the Einstein equations we have proved the equivalence between the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulatio…
In this second paper we define a Post-Minkowskian (PM) weak field approximation leading to a linearization of the Hamilton equations of ADM tetrad gravity in the York canonical basis in a family of non-harmonic 3-orthogonal Schwinger time gauges. The York time ${}^3K$ (the relativistic inertial gauge variable, not existing in Newtonian gravity, parametrizing the family and connected to the freedom in clock synchronization, i.e. to the definition of the instantaneous 3-spaces) is put equal to an arbitrary numerical function. A ultraviolet cutoff on the matter allows a consistent linearization, …
Geometrically the phase space of a mechanical system involves the co-tangent bundle of the configuration space. The phase space of a relativistic field theory is infinite dimensional and can be endowed with a symplectic structure defined in a perfectly co-variant manner that is very useful for discussing symmetries and conserved quantities of the system. In general relativity the symplectic structure takes Darboux form and it is shown in this work that the presence of a cosmological constant does not change this conclusion. For space-times that admit time-like Killing vectors the formalism can…
We study the appearance of multiple solutions to certain decompositions of Einstein's constraint equations. Pfeiffer and York recently reported the existence of two branches of solutions for identical background data in the extended conformal thin-sandwich decomposition. We show that the Hamiltonian constraint alone, when expressed in a certain way, admits two branches of solutions with properties very similar to those found by Pfeiffer and York. We construct these two branches analytically for a constant-density star in spherical symmetry, but argue that this behavior is more general. In the …
We study the Hamiltonian formulation of the generally covariant theory defined by the Lagrangian 4-form L=e_I e_J F^{IJ}(ω) where e^I is a tetrad field and F^{IJ} is the curvature of a Lorentz connection ω^{IJ}. This theory can be thought of as the limit of the Holst action for gravity for the Newton constant G goes to infinity and Immirzi parameter goes to zero, while keeping their product fixed. This theory has for a long time been conjectured to be topological. We prove this statement both in the covariant phase space formulation as well as in the standard Dirac formulation. In the time gau…
The status of canonical reduction for metric and tetrad gravity in space-times of the Christodoulou-Klainermann type, where the ADM energy rules the time evolution, is reviewed. Since in these space-times there is an asymptotic Minkowski metric at spatial infinity, it is possible to define a Hamiltonian linearization in a completely fixed (non harmonic) 3-orthogonal gauge without introducing a background metric. Post-Minkowskian background-independent gravitational waves are obtained as solutions of the linearized Hamilton equations.
This is a review of the chrono-geometrical structure of special and general relativity with a special emphasis on the role of non-inertial frames and of the conventions for the synchronization of distant clocks. ADM canonical metric and tetrad gravity are analyzed in a class of space-times suitable to incorporate particle physics by using Dirac theory of constraints, which allows to arrive at a separation of the genuine degrees of freedom of the gravitational field, the Dirac observables describing generalized tidal effects, from its gauge variables, describing generalized inertial effects. A …

We study the dynamics of a modified-gravity theory, which is supplemented by an extended Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary term and incorporates diffeomorphism violation through nondynamical background fields denoted as $u$ and $s^{μν}$ in the literature. An ADM decomposition allows us to project the modified Einstein equations into purely spacelike hypersurfaces, which implies the field equations for the induced dynamical three-metric. We also obtain the Hamilton-Jacobi equations of motion for the canonical variables of the theory based on its Hamiltonian, which was derived in a previous work. Th…
We discuss Petrov type D Einstein-Maxwell fields in which both double null eigenvectors of the Weyl tensor are non-aligned with the eigenvectors of a non-null electromagnetic field and are assumed to be geodesic, shear-free, diverging and non-twisting. We obtain the general solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations under the extra condition that the complex null vectors of the Weyl canonical tetrad are hypersurface orthogonal. The corresponding space-times are all conformally related to a Killing-Yano space and are described by a 5-parameter family of metrics, admitting two commuting Killing …
Einstein's vierbein formulation of general relativity based on the notion of distant parallelism (teleparallelism) naturally introduces a covariant surface term in addition to the Einstein-Hilbert action. We investigate the action principle in teleparallelism with the existence of spacetime boundaries and find that the covariant surface term exactly eliminates all the unwanted surface terms reside in the metric formulation of general relativity, as the role of a Gibbons-Hawking-York (GHY) term. The identity of such a covariant GHY term is further confirmed by the recovery of the correct black …
