The phase diagram of a biased graphene bilayer is computed and the existence of a ferromagnetic phase is discussed both in the critical on-site interaction $U_{c}$ versus doping density and versus temperature. We show that in the ferromagnetic phase the two planes have unequal magnetization and that the electronic density is hole like in one plane and electron like in the other. We give evidence for a \emph{first-order} phase transition between paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases induced by doping at zero temperature.
We study the localized magnetic states of impurity in biased bilayer and trilayer graphene. It is found that the magnetic boundary for bilayer and trilayer graphene presents the mixing features of Dirac and conventional fermion. For zero gate bias, as the impurity energy approaches the Dirac point, the impurity magnetization region diminishes for bilayer and trilayer graphene. When a gate bias is applied, the dependence of impurity magnetic states on the impurity energy exhibits a different behavior for bilayer and trilayer graphene due to the opening of a gap between the valence and the condu…
We compute the phase diagram of a biased graphene bilayer. The existence of a ferromagnetic phase is discussed with respect both to carrier density and temperature. We find that the ferromagnetic transition is first order, lowering the value of $U$ relatively to the usual Stoner criterion. We show that in the ferromagnetic phase the two planes have unequal magnetization and that the electronic density is hole like in one plane and electron like in the other.
We study magnetism of an adatom adsorbed on AA-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) in both unbiased and biased cases, using the Anderson impurity model. We find different magnetic phase diagrams for the adatom, depending on the energy level of the adatom, which varies from the magnetic phase diagram of adatom in normal metals to that in graphene. This is due to the individual energy dependence of the density of states (DOS) of AA-stacked BLG and anomalous broadening of the adatom energy level. Furthermore we investigate the effect of a bias voltage on DOS of AA-stacked and show that the magnetizati…
We address the optical conductivity of undoped bilayer graphene in the presence of a finite bias voltage at finite temperature. The effects of gap parameter and stacking type on optical conductivity are discussed in the context of tight binding model Hamiltonian. Green's function approach has been implemented to find the behavior of optical conductivity of bilayer graphene within linear response theory. We have found the frequency dependence of optical conductivity for different values of gap parameter and bias voltage. Also the dependence of optical conductivity on the temperature has been in…
Recent inelastic neutron diffraction measurements on Cr$_2$(Te, W, Mo)O$_6$ have revealed that these systems consist of bilayers of spin-3/2 Cr$^{3+}$ ions with strong antiferromagnetic inter-bilayer coupling and tuneable intra-bilayer coupling from ferro (for W and Mo) to antiferro (for Te). These measurements have determined the ground state spin structure and the values of sublattice magnetization, which shows significant reduction of sublattice magnetization from the atomic spin value of 3.0$μ_B$ for Cr$^{3+}$ atoms. In an earlier paper we theoretically investigated the low temperature spi…
Understanding the underlying mechanism and phenomenology of colossal magnetoresistance in manganites has largely focused on atomic and nanoscale physics such as double exchange, phase separation, and charge order. Here we consider a more macroscopic view of manganite materials physics, reporting on the ferromagnetic domain behavior in a bilayer manganite sample with a nominal composition of La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ with $x=0.38$, studied using in-situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. The role of magnetocrystalline anisotropy on the structure of domain walls was elucidated. On…
We study, within the tight-binding approximation, the electronic properties of a graphene bilayer in the presence of an external electric field applied perpendicular to the system -- \emph{biased bilayer}. The effect of the perpendicular electric field is included through a parallel plate capacitor model, with screening correction at the Hartree level. The full tight-binding description is compared with its 4-band and 2-band continuum approximations, and the 4-band model is shown to be always a suitable approximation for the conditions realized in experiments. The model is applied to real bias…
We address the effective tight-binding Hamiltonian that describes the insulating Mott state of twisted graphene bilayers at a magic angle. In that configuration, twisted bilayers form a honeycomb superlattice of localized states, characterized by the appearance of flat bands with four-fold degeneracy. After calculating the maximally localized superlattice Wannier wavefunctions, we derive the effective spin model that describes the Mott state. We suggest that the system is an exotic ferromagnetic Mott insulator, with well defined experimental signatures.
In two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets, anisotropy is essential for the magnetic ordering as dictated by the Mermin-Wagner theorem. But when competing anisotropies are present, the phase transition becomes nontrivial. Here, utilizing highly sensitive susceptometry of scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy, we probe the spin correlations of ABC-stacked CrBr3 under zero magnetic field. We identify a plateau feature in susceptibility above the critical temperature (Tc) in thick samples. It signifies a crossover regime induced by the competition between easy-plane intralayer…
Magnetic state of exchanged biased CoO(20nm)/Co($d_F$) bilayer ($d_F$=5-20nm) was studied by means of polarized neutron reflectometry. By spacing of CoO/Co bilayer and Al$_2$O$_3$ substrate with Nb(20nm) layer we created waveguide structure which allowed us to significantly enhance intensity of spin-flip (SF) scattering in the position of optical resonances. For the trained sample with thinnest Co(5nm) we detected strong SF scattering at the resonance position (up to 30\% of incoming intensity) speaking about high non-collinearity of the system. As $d_F$ increases, the intensity of SF scatteri…
Using exact diagonalization of bilayer quantum Hall systems at total filling factor $ν_T=1$ in the torus geometry, we show that there is a new long-range interlayer phase coherence due to spontaneous pseudospin spiral order at interlayer distances larger than the critical value at which the pseudospin ferromagnetic order is destroyed. We emphasize the distinction between the interlayer phase coherence and the pseudospin ferromagnetic order.
Half-metallicity in materials has been a subject of extensive research due to its potential for applications in spintronics. Ferromagnetic manganites have been seen as a good candidate, and aside from a small minority-spin pocket observed in La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ $(x=0.38)$, transport measurements show that ferromagnetic manganites essentially behave like half metals. Here we develop robust tight-binding models to describe the electronic band structure of the majority as well as minority spin states of ferromagnetic, spin-canted antiferromagnetic, and fully antiferromagnetic bi…
We consider suspened bilayer graphene under applied perpendicular electric bias field that is known to generate a single particle gap $2Δ$ and a related electric polarization ${\cal P}$. We argue that the bias also drives a quantum phase transition from band insulator to superfluid exciton condensate. The transition occurs when the exciton binding energy exceeds the band gap $2Δ$. We predict the critical bias (converted to band gap), $Δ_c\approx 60$ meV, below which the excitons condense. The critical temperature, $T_c(Δ)$, is maximum at $Δ\approx 25$ meV, $T_c^\text{max}\approx 115$ K, decrea…
The emergence of ferromagnetism in two-dimensional van der Waals materials has aroused broad interest. However, the ferromagnetic instability has been a problem remained. In this work, by using the first-principles calculations, we identified the critical ranges of strain and doping for the bilayer Cr2Ge2Te6 within which the ferromagnetic stability can be enhanced. Beyond the critical range, the tensile strain can induce the phase transition from the ferromagnetic to the antiferromagnetic, and the direction of magnetic easy axis can be converted from out-of-plane to in-plane due to the increas…
We theoretically propose a new stabilization mechanism of a skyrmion crystal (SkX) in a bilayer triangular lattice system consisting of the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic layers. By performing variational calculations and Monte Carlo simulations in a complementary way, we find that a magnetic frustration between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers is a source of a finite-Q spiral state and the SkX in the strong interlayer coupling regime. We also show that the degree of frustration is related to the interlayer exchange interaction. The stronger interlayer coupling tends to …
SrRuO$_3$ heterostructures grown in the (111) direction are a rare example of thin film ferromagnets. By means of density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory we show that the half-metallic ferromagnetic state with an ordered magnetic moment of 2$μ_{B}$/Ru survives the ultimate dimensional confinement down to a bilayer, even at elevated temperatures of 500$\,$K. In the minority channel, the spin-orbit coupling opens a gap at the linear band crossing corresponding to $\frac34$ filling of the $t_{2g}$ shell. We demonstrate that the respective state is Haldane's quantum anomalous Ha…
Electronically gated bilayer graphene behaves as a tunable gap semiconductor under a uniform interlayer bias $V_{g}$. Imposing a spatially varying bias, which changes polarity from $-V_g$ to $+V_g$, leads to one dimensional (1D) chiral modes localized along the domain wall of the bias. Due to the broad transverse spread of their low-energy wavefunctions, we find that the dominant interaction between these 1D electrons is the forward scattering part of the Coulomb repulsion. Incorporating these interactions and the gate voltage dependence of the dispersion and wavefunctions, we find that these …
We present a theory of competing ferromagnetic and superconducting orders in twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG). In our theory, ferromagnetism is induced by Coulomb repulsion, while superconductivity with intervalley equal-spin pairing can be mediated by electron-acoustic phonon interactions. We calculate the transition temperatures for ferromagnetism and superconductivity as a function of moiré band filling factor, and find that superconducting domes can appear on both the electron and hole sides of the ferromagnetic insulator at half filling. We show that the ferromagnetic insulating gap…
Epitaxial La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO)/ SrRuO3 (SRO) ferromagnetic bilayers have been grown on (001) SrTiO3 (STO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition with atomic layer control. We observe a shift in the magnetic hysteresis loop of the LSMO layer in the same direction as the applied biasing field (positive exchange bias). The effect is not present above the Curie temperature of the SRO layer (), and its magnitude increases rapidly as the temperature is lowered below . The direction of the shift is consistent with an antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between the ferromagnetic LSMO layer and the f…
Monte Carlo simulation of a 2+1 dimensional model of voltage-biased bilayer graphene, consisting of relativistic fermions with chemical potential mu coupled to charged excitations with opposite sign on each layer, has exposed non-canonical scaling of bulk observables near a quantum critical point found at strong coupling. We present a calculation of the quasiparticle dispersion relation E(k) as a function of exciton source j in the same system, employing partially twisted boundary conditions to boost the number of available momentum modes. The Fermi momentum k_F and superfluid gap Delta are ex…
Photoinduced effects in a single crystal of bilayered manganites, La2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7 (x=0.38), were investigated in a wide range of temperatures by pump-probe measurement at a photon energy of 1.6eV. In a ferromagnetic metallic state, significant enhancement of positive rise in differential reflectivity with a slow relaxing time of hundred picoseconds was observed just below Tc=127K, indicating that the reflectivity change with the slow relaxation time constant is induced by laser heating. We have also observed an unconventional fast relaxing component that has a time constant of the order of t…
We demonstrate that the electronic gap of a graphene bilayer can be controlled externally by applying a gate bias. From the magneto-transport data (Shubnikov-de Haas measurements of the cyclotron mass), and using a tight binding model, we extract the value of the gap as a function of the electronic density. We show that the gap can be changed from zero to mid-infrared energies to a value as large as 0.3 eV by using fields of < 1 V/nm, below the electric breakdown of SiO2. The opening of a gap is clearly seen in the quantum Hall regime.
Quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) phases in magnetic topological insulators are characterized by the scattering-free chiral edge currents protected by their nontrivial bulk band topology. To fully explore these intriguing phenomena and application of topological insulators, high temperature material realization of QAH phases is crucial. In this paper, based on extensive first-principles density functional theory calculations, we predict that perovskite bilayers (LaXO$_3$)$_{2}$ (X = Pd, Pt) imbedded in the (111) (LaXO$_3$)$_{2}$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_{10}$ superlattices are high Curie temperature ferromagne…
Excitonic bound states are characterised by a binding energy $ε_b$ and a single-particle band gap $Δ_b$. This work provides a theoretical description for both strong ($ε_b\simΔ_b$) and weak ($ε_b\llΔ_b$) excitonic bound states, with particular application to biased bilayer graphene. Standard description of excitons is based on a wave function that is determined by a Schrödinger-like equation with screened attractive potential. The wave function approach is valid only in the weak binding regime $ε_b\llΔ_b$. The screening depends on frequency (dynamical screening) and this implies retardation. I…
We measured the magneto-optical response of (La$_{0.4}$Pr$_{0.6}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ in order to investigate the microscopic aspects of the magnetic field driven spin-glass insulator to ferromagnetic metal transition. Application of a magnetic field recovers the ferromagnetic state with an overall redshift of the electronic structure, growth of the bound carrier localization associated with ferromagnetic domains, development of a pseudogap, and softening of the Mn-O stretching and bending modes that indicate a structural change. We discuss field- and temperature-induced trends withi…
The Ruthenium based perovskites exhibit a wide variety of interesting collective phenomena related to magnetism originating from the Ru 4d electrons. Much remains unknown concerning the nature of magnetic fluctuations and excitations in these systems. We present results of detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements of Sr3Ru2O7 as a function of temperature, probing the ferromagnetic fluctuations of the bilayer structure. A magnetic response is clearly visible for a range of temperatures, T = 3.8 K up to T = 100 K, and for energy transfers between 2 and 14 meV. These measurements indicat…
Spin angular momentum transfer in magnetic bilayers offers the possibility of ultrafast and low-loss operation for next-generation spintronic devices. We report the field- and temperature- dependent measurements on the magnetization precessions in Co$_2$FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE). Analysis of the effective Gilbert damping and phase shift indicates a clear signature of an enhanced dynamic exchange coupling between the two ferromagnetic (FM) layers due to the reinforced spin pumping at resonance. The temperature dependence of the dynamic exchange-couplin…
We study the magnon bands of twisted bilayer honeycomb quantum magnets using linear spin wave theory. Although the interlayer coupling can be ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic, we keep the intralayer one ferromagnetic to avoid possible frustration. For the interlayer ferromagnetic case, we find the magnon bands have similar features with the corresponding electronic energy spectrums. Although the linear dispersions near the Dirac points are preserved in the magnon bands of twisted bilayer magnets, their slopes are graduately reduced with the decrease of the twist angles. On the other hand, th…
We study the effects of long and short-range electron-electron interactions in a graphene bilayer. Using a variational wavefunction technique we show that in the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions the clean bilayer is always unstable to electron and hole pocket formation with a finite ferromagnetic polarization. Furthermore, we argue that short-range electron-electron interactions lead to a staggered orientation of the ordered ferromagnetic moment in each layer (that is, c-axis antiferromagnetism). We also comment on the effects of doping and trigonal distortions of the electronic ban…
We determine magnon spectra of an atomic bilayer magnet with ferromagnetic intra- and both ferro- and anti- ferromagnetic interlayer coupling. Analytic expressions for the full magnon band of the latter case reveal that both exchange interactions govern the fundamental magnon gap. The inter and intralayer magnetic ordering are not independent: the intralayer ferromagnetism stabilizes antiferromagnetic inter-layer order. The topology of these exchange-anisotropy spin models without spin-orbit interaction turns out to be trivial.
The hypothesis regarding the existence of uncorrelated pre-formed pairs in the pseudogap regime of superconducting $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ is tested experimentally using bilayers of $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ and the itinerant ferromagnet $SrRuO_3$. In our study, we monitor the influence of $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ on $T_p$, the ferromagnetic ordering temperature of $SrRuO_3$. Here, $T_p$ is the temperature of maximum dM/dT or dR/dT where M and R are the magnetization and resistance of $SrRuO_3$, respectively. We compare the results with similar measurements carried out on bilayers of $La_{1.88}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4-y}$, $Au$ and…
We have investigated exchange bias effects in bilayers composed by the antiferromagnetic o-YMnO$_3$ and ferromagnetic Co thin film by means of SQUID magnetometry, magnetoresistance, anisotropic magnetoresistance and planar Hall effect. The magnetization and magnetotransport properties show pronounced asymmetries in the field and magnetization axes of the field hysteresis loops. Both exchange bias parameters, the exchange bias field $H_{E}(T)$ as well as the magnetization shift $M_E(T)$, vanish around the Néel temperature $T_N \simeq 45$ K. We show that the magnetization shift $M_E(T)$ is also …
We performed the detailed microscopic analysis of the inter-layer magnetic couplings for bilayer CrI$_3$. As the first step toward understanding the recent experimental observations and utilizing them for device applications, we estimated magnetic force response as well as total energy. Various van der Waals functionals equivocally point to the ferromagnetic ground state for the low-temperature structured bilayer CrI$_3$ which is further confirmed independently by magnetic force response calculations. The calculated orbital-dependent magnetic forces clearly show that $e_g$-$t_{2g}$ interaction…
Fast spin manipulation in magnetic heterostructures, where magnetic interactions between different materials often define the functionality of devices, is a key issue in the development of ultrafast spintronics. Although recently developed optical approaches such as ultrafast spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques open new pathways to fast spin manipulation, these processes do not fully utilize the unique possibilities offered by interfacial magnetic coupling effects in ferromagnetic multilayer systems. Here, we experimentally demonstrate ultrafast photo-enhanced interfacial exchange interaction…
We formulate a model of N_f=4 flavors of relativistic fermion in 2+1d in the presence of a chemical potential mu coupled to two flavor doublets with opposite sign, akin to isopsin chemical potential in QCD. This is argued to be an effective theory for low energy electronic excitations in bilayer graphene, in which an applied voltage between the layers ensures equal populations of particles on one layer and holes on the other. The model is then reformulated on a spacetime lattice using staggered fermions, and in the absence of a sign problem, simulated using an orthodox hybrid Monte Carlo algor…
