Spin angular momentum transfer in magnetic bilayers offers the possibility of ultrafast and low-loss operation for next-generation spintronic devices. We report the field- and temperature- dependent measurements on the magnetization precessions in Co$_2$FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE). Analysis of the effective Gilbert damping and phase shift indicates a clear signature of an enhanced dynamic exchange coupling between the two ferromagnetic (FM) layers due to the reinforced spin pumping at resonance. The temperature dependence of the dynamic exchange-coupling reveals a primary contribution from the ferromagnetism in (Ga,Mn)As.
Fast spin manipulation in magnetic heterostructures, where magnetic interactions between different materials often define the functionality of devices, is a key issue in the development of ultrafast spintronics. Although recently developed optical approaches such as ultrafast spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques open new pathways to fast spin manipulation, these processes do not fully utilize the unique possibilities offered by interfacial magnetic coupling effects in ferromagnetic multilayer systems. Here, we experimentally demonstrate ultrafast photo-enhanced interfacial exchange interaction…
We examine the influence of crystal growth on the spin-pumping induced inverse spin Hall effect in Fe/Pt bilayers. The morphology of the Fe/Pt interface influences the effective spin mixing conductance. The increase of growth temperature leads to smoother and larger grains at the interface that enhance the effective spin mixing conductance. The spin current injection efficiency into Pt, measured by the inverse spin Hall effect, is maximized by optimizing the epitaxy of Pt on Fe. In magnetic field dependent measurements, the presence of a strong magnetic anisotropy gives rise to two distinct in…
Spin pumping by ferromagnetic resonance is one of the most common technique to determine spin hall angles, Edelstein lengths or spin diffusion lengths of a large variety of materials. In recent years, rising concerns have appeared regarding the interpretation of these experiments, underlining that the signal could arise purely from thermoelectric effects, rather than from coherent spin pumping. Here, we propose a method to evaluate the presence or absence of thermal effects in spin pumping signals, by combining bolometry and spin pumping by ferromagnetic resonance measurements, and comparing t…
The transport of optically excited, hot electrons in heterostructures is analyzed by femtosecond, time-resolved two-photon photoelectron emission spectroscopy (2PPE) for epitaxial Au/Fe/MgO(001). We compare the temporal evolution of the 2PPE intensity upon optically pumping Fe or Au, while the probing occurs on the Au surface. In the case of Fe-side pumping, assuming independent relaxation in the Fe and Au layers, we determine the hot electron relaxation times in these individual layers by an analysis of the Au layer thickness dependence of the observed, effective electron lifetimes in the het…
Our examination of the interplay of ultrafast charge dynamics and electron-phonon interaction in bilayer MoS2 provides a microscopic basis for understanding the features (two peaks) in the emission spectrum. We demonstrate that while the initial accumulation of excited charge occurs at and near the Q point of the two-dimensional Brillioun zone, emission takes place predominantly through two pathways: direct charge recombination at the K point and indirect phonon-assisted recombination of electrons at the K valley and holes at Γ hill of the Brillouin zone. Analysis of the wave vector dependenci…
We investigate picosecond spin-currents across Au/iron-garnet interfaces in response to ultrafast laser heating of the electrons in the Au film. In the picoseconds after optical heating, interfacial spin currents occur due to an interfacial temperature difference between electrons in the metal and magnons in the insulator. We report measurements of this interfacial longitudinal spin Seebeck effect between Au and rare-earth iron-garnet insulators, i.e. RE$_3$ Fe$_5$O$_{12}$, where RE is Y, Eu, Tb, Tm. We use time domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) measurements to characterize the thermal response …
In spintronics applications, ultrafast spin dynamics have to be controlled at femtosecond (fs) timescales via fs-laser radiation. At such ultrafast timescales, the effect of the Gilbert damping factor α on ultrafast demagnetization time should be considered. In previous explorations for the relationship between these two parameters, it was found that the theoretical calculations based on the local spin-flip scattering model do not agree with the experimental results. Here, we find that in Fe81Ga19(FeGa)/Ir20Mn80(IrMn) bilayers, the unconventional IrMn thickness dependence of α results from the…
Bilayer graphene is a highly promising material for electronic and optoelectronic applications since it is supporting massive Dirac fermions with a tuneable band gap. However, no consistent picture of the gap's effect on the optical and transport behavior has emerged so far, and it has been proposed that the insulating nature of the gap could be compromised by unavoidable structural defects, by topological in-gap states, or that the electronic structure could be altogether changed by many-body effects. Here we directly follow the excited carriers in bilayer graphene on a femtosecond time scale…
We study coherent nonlinear dynamics of carriers under ultrafast interband excitation of an intrinsic graphene. The Rabi oscillations of response appear with increasing of pumping intensity. The photoexcited distribution is calculated versus time and energy taking into account the effects of energy relaxation and dephasing. Spectral and temporal dependencies of the response on a probe radiation (transmission and reflection coefficients) are considered for different pumping intensities and the Rabi oscillations versus time and intensity are analyzed.
The effect of the curvature of bilayer graphene on the interlayer diffusion of Li atoms is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. A spectacular enhancement of the diffusion constant parallel to the folding axis is found. The ratio of the parallel to the perpendicular diffusion depends on the buckling direction and stacking type, and it increases with the degree of buckling. The strongest anisotropy is observed in the case of fixed zig-zag edges. A comparison with the interlayer diffusion of Na suggests that the strong asymmetry in the vibrational states of buckled graphene and also…
Pure spin current based research is mostly focused on ferromagnet (FM)/heavy metal (HM) system. Because of the high spin orbit coupling (SOC) these HMs exhibit short spin diffusion length and therefore possess challenges for device application. Low SOC (elements of light weight) and large spin diffusion length make the organic semiconductors (OSCs) suitable for future spintronic applications. From theoretical model it is explained that, due to $π$ - $σ$ hybridization the curvature of the C$_{60}$ molecules may increase the SOC strength. Here, we have investigated spin pumping and inverse spin …
While valleys (energy extrema) are present in all band structures of solids, their preeminent role in determining exciton resonances and dynamics in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) is unique. Using two-dimensional coherent electronic spectroscopy, we find that exciton decoherence occurs on a much faster time scale in MoSe$_2$ bilayers than that in the monolayers. We further identify two population relaxation channels in the bilayer, a coherent and an incoherent one. Our microscopic model reveals that phonon-emission processes facilitate scattering events from the $K$ va…
We develop a method for universally resolving the important issue of separating spin pumping (SP) from spin rectification (SR) signals in bilayer spintronics devices. This method is based on the characteristic distinction of SP and SR, as revealed in their different angular and field symmetries. It applies generally for analyzing charge voltages in bilayers induced by the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), independent of FMR line shape. Hence, it solves the outstanding problem that device specific microwave properties restrict the universal quantification of the spin Hall angle in bilayer devices …
Epitaxial Y3Fe5O12 thin films have been deposited by off-axis sputtering, which exhibit excellent crystalline quality, enabling observation of large spin pumping signals in Pt/Y3Fe5O12 and W/Y3Fe5O12 bilayers driven by cavity ferromagnetic resonance. The inverse spin Hall voltages reach 2.10 mV and -5.26 mV in 5-mm long Pt/Y3Fe5O12 and W/Y3Fe5O12 bilayers, respectively, excited by a radio-frequency magnetic field of 0.3 Oe. From the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth broadening, the interfacial spin mixing conductance of 4.56E14 Ω-1m-2 and 2.30E14 Ω-1m-2 are obtained for Pt/Y3Fe5O12 and W/Y3Fe5…
Due to the absence of matching carbon atoms at honeycomb centers with carbon atoms in adjacent graphene sheets, theorists predicted that a sliding process is needed to form AA, AB, or ABC stacking when directly converting graphite into sp3 bonded diamond. Here, using twisted bilayer graphene, which naturally provides AA and AB stacking configurations, we report the ultrafast formation of a transient 2D diamond-like structure (which is not observed in aligned graphene) under femtosecond laser irradiation. This photo-induced phase transition is evidenced by the appearance of new bond lengths of …
We perform a femtosecond-THz optical pump-probe spectroscopy to investigate the cooling dynamics of hot carriers in quasi-free standing bilayer epitaxial graphene. We observed longer decay time constants, in the range of 2.6 to 6.4 ps, compared to previous studies on monolayer graphene, which increase nonlinearly with excitation intensity. The increased relaxation times are due to the decoupling of the graphene layer from the SiC substrate after hydrogen intercalation which increases the distance between graphene and substrate. Furthermore, our measurements do not show that the supercollision …
The quasiparticle spectra of atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and their response to an ultrafast optical excitation critically depend on interactions with the underlying substrate. Here, we present a comparative time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) study of the transient electronic structure and ultrafast carrier dynamics in the single- and bilayer TMDCs MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ on three different substrates: Au(111), Ag(111) and graphene/SiC. The photoexcited quasiparticle bandgaps are observed to vary over the range of 1.9-2.3 eV bet…
The temperature evolution of GdFeCo electrons following optical heating plays a key role in all optical switching of GdFeCo and is primarily governed by the strength of coupling between electrons and phonons. Typically, the strength of electron-phonon coupling in a metal is deduced by monitoring changes in reflectance following optical heating and then analyzing the transient reflectance with a simple two-temperature thermal model. In a magnetic metal, the change in reflectance cannot be assumed to depend only the electron and phonon temperatures because a metal's reflectance also depends on t…
The ability to controllably manipulate the laser-induced ultrafast magnetic dynamics is a prerequisite for future high speed spintronic devices. The optimization of devices requires the controllability of the ultrafast demagnetization time, , and intrinsic Gilbert damping, . In previous attempts to establish the relationship between and , the rare-earth doping of a permalloy film with two different demagnetization mechanism is not a suitable candidate. Here, we choose Co/Ni bilayers to investigate the relations between and by means of time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE) via adju…
Manganites have shown potential in spintronics because they exhibit high spin polarization. Here, by ferromagnetic resonance we have studied the damping properties of La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$/Pt bilayers which are prepared by oxide molecular beam epitaxy. The damping coefficient ($α$) of La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) single layer is found to be 0.0104. However the LSMO/Pt bilayers exhibit decrease in $α$ with increase in Pt thickness. This decrease in the value of $α$ is probably due to high anti-damping like torque. Further, we have investigated the angle dependent inverse spi…
We study spin pumping in a $\mathrm{Y_3Fe_5O_{12}(YIG)/Pt/Ni_{81}Fe_{19}(Py)}$ trilayer film by means of the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). When the ferromagnets are not excited simultaneously by a microwave, ISHE-induced voltage is of the opposite sign at each ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). The opposite sign is consistent with spin pumping of bilayer films. On the other hand, the voltage is of the same sign at each FMR when both the ferromagnets are excited simultaneously. Futhermore, the voltage greatly increases in magnitude. The observed voltage is unconventional; neither its sign nor ma…
The ultrafast and element-specific response of magnetic systems containing ferromagnetic 3d transition metals and 4d/5d heavy metals is of interest both from a fundamental as well as an applied research perspective. However, to date no consensus about the main microscopic processes describing the interplay between intrinsic 3d and induced 4d/5d magnetic moments upon femtosecond laser excitation exist. In this work, we study the ultrafast response of CoFeB/Pt bilayers by probing element-specific, core-to-valence band transitions in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range using high harmonic radi…
Solid mixed conductors with significant ionic as well as electronic conduction play a pivotal role for mass transfer and storage as required in battery electrodes. Single-phase materials with simultaneously high electronic and ionic conductivity at room temperature are hard to come by and therefore multi-phase systems with separate ion and electron channels have been put forward instead. Here, we explore bilayer graphene as a true single phase mixed conductor and demonstrate ultrafast lithium diffusion exceeding diffusion in bulk graphite by an order of magnitude and even surpassing diffusion …
Voltages generated from inverse spin Hall and anisotropic magneto-resistance effects via spin pumping in ferromagnetic (F)/non-magnetic (N) bilayers are investigated by means of a broadband ferromagnetic resonance approach. Varying the non-magnetic layer thickness enables the determination of the spin diffusion length in Pd of 5.5 +/- 0.5 nm. We also observe a systematic change of the voltage lineshape when reversing the stacking order of the F/N bilayer, which is qualitatively consistent with expectations from spin Hall effects. However, even after independent calibration of the precession an…
We report a tunable spin mixing conductance, up to $\pm 22\%$, in a Y${}_{3}$Fe${}_{5}$O${}_{12}$/Platinum (YIG/Pt) bilayer. This control is achieved by applying a gate voltage with an ionic gate technique, which exhibits a gate-dependent ferromagnetic resonance line width. Furthermore, we observed a gate-dependent spin pumping and spin Hall angle in the Pt layer, which is also tunable up to $\pm$ 13.6\%. This work experimentally demonstrates spin current control through spin pumping and a gate voltage in a YIG/Pt bilayer, demonstrating the crucial role of the interfacial charge density for the…
SrIrO$_3$ with its large spin-orbit coupling and low charge conductivity has emerged as a potential candidate for efficient spin-orbit torque magnetization control in spintronic devices. We here report on the influence of an interfacial oxide layer on spin pumping experiments in Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ (NiFe)/SrIrO$_3$ bilayer heterostructures. To investigate this scenario we have carried out broadband ferromagnetic resonance (BBFMR) measurements, which indicate the presence of an interfacial antiferromagnetic oxide layer. We performed in-plane BBFMR experiments at cryogenic temperatures, which all…
We report the magnetic response of Au/GdFeCo bilayers to optical irradiation of the Au surface. For bilayers with Au thickness greater than 50 nm, the great majority of energy is absorbed by the Au electrons, creating an initial temperature differential of thousands of Kelvin between the Au and GdFeCo layers. The resulting electronic heat currents between the Au and GdFeCo layers last for several picoseconds with energy flux in excess of 2 TW m-2, and provide sufficient heating to the GdFeCo electrons to induce deterministic reversal of the magnetic moment.
The recently discovered ferroelectricity of van der Waals bilayers offers an unconventional route to improve the performance of devices. Key parameters such as switching field and speed depend on the static and dynamic properties of domain walls (DWs). Here we theoretically explore the properties of textures in stacking-engineered ferroelectrics from first principles. Employing a machine-learning potential model, we present results of large-scale atomistic simulations of stacking DWs and Moiré structure of boron nitride bilayers. We predict that the competition between the switching barrier of…
By using constrained density functional theory modeling, we demonstrate that ultrafast optical pumping unveils hidden charge orders in group VI monolayer transition metal ditellurides. We show that irradiation of the insulating 2H phases stabilizes multiple transient charge density wave orders with light-tunable distortion, periodicity, electronic structure and bandgap. Moreover, optical pumping of the semimetallic 1T' phases generates a transient charge ordered metallic phase composed of 2D diamond clusters. For each transient phase we identify the critical fluence at which it is observed and…
We present spin pumping experiments in Co/Pt bilayers grown on Al2O3(0001) and on ferroelectric Y-cut LiNbO3 substrates. Spin pumping is triggered by resonant ferromagnetic resonance induced by surface acoustic waves. We observe that spin pumping efficiency varies when both the magnetization vector and the acoustic wave vector are reversed in Pt/Co/LiNbO3. This phenomenon is not observed in Pt/Co/Al2O3. We propose that the in-plane electric polarization of LiNbO3 is at the origin of the observed phenomenon. These observations open up the perspective of an electric field control of spin pumping…
The authors have investigated the contribution of the surface spin waves to spin pumping. A Pt/NiFe bilayer has been used for measuring spin waves and spin pumping signals simultaneously. The theoretical framework of spin pumping resulting from ferromagnetic resonance has been extended to incorporate spin pumping due to spin waves. Equations for the effective area of spin pumping due to spin waves have been derived. The amplitude of the spin pumping signal resulting from travelling waves is shown to decrease more rapidly with precession frequency than that resulting from standing waves and sho…
Microwave assisted magnetization reversal has been investigated in a bilayer system of Pt/ferromagnet by detecting a change in the polarity of the spin pumping signal. The reversal process is studied in two material systems, Pt/CoFeB and Pt/NiFe, for different aspect ratios. The onset of the switching behavior is indicated by a sharp transition in the spin pumping voltage. At a threshold value of the external field, the switching process changes from partial to full reversal with increasing microwave power. The proposed method provides a simple way to detect microwave assisted magnetization re…
We theoretically study the dynamic time evolution following laser pulse pumping in an antiferromagnetic insulator Cr$_{2}$O$_{3}$. From the photoexcited high-spin quartet states to the long-lived low-spin doublet states, the ultrafast demagnetization processes are investigated by solving the dissipative Schrödinger equation. We find that the demagnetization times are of the order of hundreds of femtosecond, in good agreement with recent experiments. The switching times could be strongly reduced by properly tuning the energy gaps between the multiplet energy levels of Cr$^{3+}$. Furthermore, th…
We studied the ultrafast third-order optical nonlinearity in a single crystal of multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) in the near-infrared range of 0.5-1.0 eV, where the material is fundamentally transparent,at room temperature. With pump pulses at 1.55 eV, which is off-resonant to the strong inter-band charge transfer (CT) transition, we observed instantaneous transient absorption with pencil-like temporal profile originating from the two-photon CT transition from the oxygen 2p to the iron 3p levels. In contrast, under pumping with 3.10-eV photons, the pencil-like absorption change was not o…
Recently, antiferromagnets have received revived interest due to their significant potential for developing next-generation ultrafast magnetic storage. Here we report dc spin pumping by the acoustic resonant mode in a canted easy-plane antiferromagnet α-Fe2O3 enabled by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Systematic angle and frequency dependent measurements demonstrate that the observed spin pumping signals arise from resonance-induced spin injection and inverse spin Hall effect in α-Fe2O3/metal heterostructures, mimicking the behavior of spin pumping in conventional ferromagnet/nonmagnet …
We measure the inverse spin Hall effect of Cu$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$ thin films on yttrium iron garnet over a wide range of Ir concentrations ($0.05 \leqslant x \leqslant 0.7$). Spin currents are triggered through the spin Seebeck effect, either by a DC temperature gradient or by ultrafast optical heating of the metal layer. The spin Hall current is detected by, respectively, electrical contacts or measurement of the emitted THz radiation. With both approaches, we reveal the same Ir concentration dependence that follows a novel complex, non-monotonous behavior as compared to previous studies. For sma…
The relative contribution of spin pumping and spin rectification from the ferromagnetic resonance of CoFeB/non-magnetic bilayers was investigated as a function of non-magnetic electrode resistance. Samples with highly resistive electrodes of Ta or Ti exhibit a stronger spin rectification signal, which may result in over-(or under-)estimation of the spin Hall angle of the materials, while those with low resistive electrodes of Pt or Pd show the domination of the inverse spin Hall effect from spin pumping. By comparison with samples of single FM layer and an inverted structure, we provide a prop…
We show that electric currents are induced in inversion asymmetric ferromagnets if the exchange splitting varies in time after excitation by laser pulses. We interpret this phenomenon as the magnetic variant of the inverse Edelstein effect. Based on \textit{ab initio} calculations we determine the size of this effect in Co/Pt(111) and Mn/W(001) magnetic bilayer systems and investigate its dependence on the magnetization direction. The comparison of our theoretical results to experiments measuring the THz signal emitted after laser excitation suggests that ultrafast demagnetization in 3$d$ tran…
Spin pumping in ferromagnets provides a source of pure spin currents. Via the inverse spin Hall effect a spin current is converted into a charge current and a corresponding detectable DC-voltage. The ratio of injected spin current to resulting charge current is given by the spin Hall angle. However, the number of experiments more or less equals the number of different values for spin Hall angles, even for the most studied normal metal platinum. This publication provides a full study of inverse spin Hall effect and anisotropic magnetoresistance for different NiFe(Py) / normal metal bilayers usi…
We studied the response of a ferromagnet-insulator-normal metal tunnel structure under an external oscillating radio frequency (R.F.) magnetic field. The D. C. voltage across the junction is calculated and is found not to decrease despite the high resistance of the junction; instead, it is of the order of $μV$ to $100μV$, much larger than the experimentally observed value (100 nano-V) in the "strong coupled" ohmic ferromagnet-normal metal bilayers. This is consistent with recent experimental results in tunnel structures, where the voltage is larger than $μV$s. The damping and loss of an extern…
We report the ultrafast, (sub)picosecond reduction of the antiferromagnetic order of the insulating NiO thin film in a Pt/NiO bilayer. This reduction of the antiferromagnetic order is not present in pure NiO thin films after a strong optical excitation. This ultrafast phenomenon is attributed to an ultrafast and highly efficient energy transfer from the optically excited electron system of the Pt layer into the NiO spin system. We propose that this energy transfer is mediated by a stochastic exchange scattering of hot Pt electrons at the Pt/NiO interface.
We experimentally investigate spin-orbit torque and spin pumping in Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$(YIG)/Pt bilayers with ultrathin insertion layers at the interface. An insertion layer of Cu suppresses both spin-orbit torque and spin pumping, whereas an insertion layer of Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ (permalloy, Py) enhances them, in a quantitatively consistent manner with the reciprocity of the two spin transmission processes. However, we observe a large enhancement of Gilbert damping with the insertion of Py that cannot be accounted for solely by spin pumping, suggesting significant spin-memory loss due to the i…
The ultrafast response of a high-reflectivity GaAs/AlAs Bragg mirror to optical pumping is investigated for all-optical switching applications. Both Kerr and free carrier nonlinearities are induced with 100 fs, 780 nm pulses with a fluence of 0.64 kJ/m^2 and 0.8 kJ/m^2. The absolute transmission of the mirror at 931 nm increases by a factor of 27 from 0.0024% to 0.065% on a picosecond timescale. These results demonstrate the potential for a high-reflectivity ultrafast switchable mirror for quantum optics and optical communication applications. A design is proposed for a structure to be pumped …
