We show that in a knapsack feasibility problem an integral vector $p$, which is short, and near parallel to the constraint vector gives a branching direction with small integer width.
We use this result to analyze two computationally efficient reformulation techniques on low density knapsack problems. Both reformulations have a constraint matrix with columns reduced in the sense of Lenstra, Lenstra, and Lovász. We prove an upper bound on the integer width along the last variable, which becomes 1, when the density is sufficiently small.
In the proof we extract from the transformation matrices a vector which is near parallel to the constraint vector $a.$ The near parallel vector is a good branching direction in the original knapsack problem, and this transfers to the last variable in the reformulations.
We study the reformulation of integer linear programs by means of a mixed integer linear program with fewer integer variables. Such reformulations can be solved efficiently with mixed integer linear programming techniques. We exhibit examples that demonstrate how integer programs can be reformulated using far fewer integer variables. To this end, we introduce a generalization of total unimodularity called the \emph{affine TU-dimension} of a matrix and study related theory and algorithms for determining the affine TU-dimension of a matrix. We also present bounds on the number of integer variabl…
The aim of this paper is to show that in some cases risk averse multistage stochastic programming problems can be reformulated in a form of risk neutral setting. This is achieved by a change of the reference probability measure making ``bad" (extreme) scenarios more frequent. As a numerical example we demonstrate advantages of such change-of-measure approach applied to the Brazilian Interconnected Power System operation planning problem.
We consider in this paper a class of semi-continuous quadratic programming problems which arises in many real-world applications such as production planning, portfolio selection and subset selection in regression. We propose a lift-and-convexification approach to derive an equivalent reformulation of the original problem. This lift-and-convexification approach lifts the quadratic term involving $x$ only in the original objective function $f(x,y)$ to a quadratic function of both $x$ and $y$ and convexifies this equivalent objective function. While the continuous relaxation of our new reformulat…
This paper describes an approximate method for global optimization of polynomial programming problems with bounded variables. The method uses a reformulation and linearization technique to transform the original polynomial optimization problem into a pair of mixed binary-linear programs. The solutions to these two integer-linear reformulations provide upper and lower bounds on the global solution to the original polynomial program. The tightness of these bounds, the error in approximating each polynomial expression, and the number of constraints that must be added in the process of reformulati…
In this paper, we propose a mixed-binary convex quadratic programming reformulation for the box-constrained nonconvex quadratic integer program and then implement IBM ILOG CPLEX 12.6 to solve the new model. Computational results demonstrate that our approach clearly outperform the very recent state-of-the-art solvers.
A standard quadratic program is an optimization problem that consists of minimizing a (nonconvex) quadratic form over the unit simplex. We focus on reformulating a standard quadratic program as a mixed integer linear programming problem. We propose two alternative mixed integer linear programming formulations. Our first formulation is based on casting a standard quadratic program as a linear program with complementarity constraints. We then employ binary variables to linearize the complementarity constraints. For the second formulation, we first derive an overestimating function of the objecti…
In semidefinite programming (SDP), unlike in linear programming, Farkas' lemma may fail to prove infeasibility. Here we obtain an exact, short certificate of infeasibility in SDP by an elementary approach: we reformulate any semidefinite system of the form Ai*X = bi (i=1,...,m) (P) X >= 0 using only elementary row operations, and rotations. When (P) is infeasible, the reformulated system is trivially infeasible. When (P) is feasible, the reformulated system has strong duality with its Lagrange dual for all objective functions. As a corollary, we obtain algorithms to generate the constraints of…
In this paper we introduce a new parameterized Quadratic Decision Rule (QDR), a generalisation of the commonly employed Affine Decision Rule (ADR), for two-stage linear adjustable robust optimization problems with ellipsoidal uncertainty and show that (affinely parameterized) linear adjustable robust optimization problems with QDRs are numerically tractable by presenting exact semi-definite program (SDP) and second order cone program (SOCP) reformulations. Under these QDRs, we also establish that exact conic program reformulations also hold for two-stage linear ARO problems, containing also ad…
In optimization problems, often equations and inequalities are represented using if-else (implication) construct which is known to be equivalent to a disjunction. Such statements are modeled and incorporated in an optimization problem using Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP). GDP provides a systematic methodology to model optimization problems involving logic disjunctions, logic propositions, and algebraic equations. In order to take advantage of the existing MINLP solvers, GDP problems can be reformulated as the standard MINLP problems. In this work we propose a novel reformulation met…
We propose an extended variant of the reformulation and decomposition algorithm for solving a special class of mixed-integer bilevel linear programs (MIBLPs) where continuous and integer variables are involved in both upper- and lower-level problems. In particular, we consider MIBLPs with upper-level constraints that involve lower-level variables. We assume that the inducible region is nonempty and all variables are bounded. By using the reformulation and decomposition scheme, an MIBLP is first converted into its equivalent single-level formulation, then computed by a column-and-constraint gen…
Mixed integer predictive control deals with optimizing integer and real control variables over a receding horizon. The mixed integer nature of controls might be a cause of intractability for instances of larger dimensions. To tackle this little issue, we propose a decomposition method which turns the original $n$-dimensional problem into $n$ indipendent scalar problems of lot sizing form. Each scalar problem is then reformulated as a shortest path one and solved through linear programming over a receding horizon. This last reformulation step mirrors a standard procedure in mixed integer progra…
This document describes the detailed reformulation of a power system upgrade planning problem into a more generic quadratically constrained quadratic problem (QCQP). The problem is one of deciding what lines to upgrade in an existing power system in order to enable it to handle specific load situations. The reformulation presented here is based on other formulations already used in the field, such as the ones presented in [1] and [2]. This document was created as a reference for publications by the author that refer to the planning problem but avoid outlining reformulation details.
Adaptive robust optimization problems are usually solved approximately by restricting the adaptive decisions to simple parametric decision rules. However, the corresponding approximation error can be substantial. In this paper we show that two-stage robust and distributionally robust linear programs can often be reformulated exactly as conic programs that scale polynomially with the problem dimensions. Specifically, when the ambiguity set constitutes a 2-Wasserstein ball centered at a discrete distribution, then the distributionally robust linear program is equivalent to a copositive program (…
Inspired by a paper of R. W. Rosenthal, we investigate generalized Nash-equilibria of integer programming games. We show that generalized Nash-equilibria always exist and are related to an optimal solution of a so-called N-fold integer program. This link allows us to establish some polynomial time complexity results about solving this optimization problem and its inverse counter-part.
We present a geometrical analysis on the completely positive programming reformulation of quadratic optimization problems and its extension to polynomial optimization problems with a class of geometrically defined nonconvex conic programs and their covexification. The class of nonconvex conic programs is described with a linear objective functionin a linear space $V$, and the constraint set is represented geometrically as the intersection of a nonconvex cone $K \subset V$, a face $J$ of the convex hull of $K$ and a parallel translation $L$ of a supporting hyperplane of the nonconvex cone $K$. …
We propose a homogeneous primal-dual interior-point method to solve sum-of-squares optimization problems by combining non-symmetric conic optimization techniques and polynomial interpolation. The approach optimizes directly over the sum-of-squares cone and its dual, circumventing the semidefinite programming (SDP) reformulation which requires a large number of auxiliary variables. As a result, it has substantially lower theoretical time and space complexity than the conventional SDP-based approach. Although our approach avoids the semidefinite programming reformulation, an optimal solution to …
It is well known that recurrent sandpile configurations can be characterized as the optimal solution of certain optimization problems. In this article, we present two new integer linear programming models, one that computes recurrent configurations and other that computes the order of the configuration. Finally, by using duality of linear programming, we are able to compute the identity configuration for the cone of a regular graph.
This paper introduces a family of valid inequalities, that we term consistency cuts, to be applied to a Dantzig-Wolfe reformulation (or decomposition) with linking variables. We prove that these cuts ensure an integer solution to the corresponding Dantzig-Wolfe relaxation when certain criteria to the structure of the decomposition are met. We implement the cuts and use them to solve a commonly used test set of 200 instances of the temporal knapsack problem. We assess the performance with and without the cuts and compare further to CPLEX and other solution methods that have historically been us…

We study robust convex quadratic programs where the uncertain problem parameters can contain both continuous and integer components. Under the natural boundedness assumption on the uncertainty set, we show that the generic problems are amenable to exact copositive programming reformulations of polynomial size. These convex optimization problems are NP-hard but admit a conservative semidefinite programming (SDP) approximation that can be solved efficiently. We prove that the popular approximate S-lemma method --- which is valid only in the case of continuous uncertainty --- is weaker than our a…
We analyze combinatorial optimization problems with ordinal, i.e., non-additive, objective functions that assign categories (like good, medium and bad) rather than cost coefficients to the elements of feasible solutions. We review different optimality concepts for ordinal optimization problems and discuss their similarities and differences. We then focus on two prevalent optimality concepts that are shown to be equivalent. Our main result is a bijective linear transformation that transforms ordinal optimization problems to associated standard multi-objective optimization problems with binary c…
We present a new algorithm for computing a truncated Markov basis of a lattice. In general, this new algorithm is faster than existing methods. We then extend this new algorithm so that it solves the linear integer feasibility problem with promising results for equality knapsack problems. We also present a novel Groebner basis approach to solve a particular integer linear program as opposed to previous Groebner basis methods that effectively solved many different integer linear programs simultaneously. Initial results indicate that this optimisation algorithm performs better than previous Groe…
We describe a general and safe computational framework that provides integer programming results with the degree of certainty that is required for machine-assisted proofs of mathematical theorems. At its core, the framework relies on a rational branch-and-bound certificate produced by an exact integer programming solver, SCIP, in order to circumvent floating-point roundoff errors present in most state-of-the-art solvers for mixed-integer programs. The resulting certificates are self-contained and checker software exists that can verify their correctness independently of the integer programming…
The Stackelberg prediction game (SPG) is popular in characterizing strategic interactions between a learner and an attacker. As an important special case, the SPG with least squares loss (SPG-LS) has recently received much research attention. Although initially formulated as a difficult bi-level optimization problem, SPG-LS admits tractable reformulations which can be polynomially globally solved by semidefinite programming or second order cone programming. However, all the available approaches are not well-suited for handling large-scale datasets, especially those with huge numbers of feature…
This paper is concerned with the derivation of first- and second-order sufficient optimality conditions for optimistic bilevel optimization problems involving smooth functions. First-order sufficient optimality conditions are obtained by estimating the tangent cone to the feasible set of the bilevel program in terms of initial problem data. This is done by exploiting several different reformulations of the hierarchical model as a single-level problem. To obtain second-order sufficient optimality conditions, we exploit the so-called value function reformulation of the bilevel optimization probl…
We study Graver test sets for families of linear multi-stage stochastic integer programs with varying number of scenarios. We show that these test sets can be decomposed into finitely many ``building blocks'', independent of the number of scenarios, and we give an effective procedure to compute these building blocks. The paper includes an introduction to Nash-Williams' theory of better-quasi-orderings, which is used to show termination of our algorithm. We also apply this theory to finiteness results for Hilbert functions.
In this paper, we develop an exact reformulation and a deterministic approximation for distributionally robust joint chance-constrained programmings (DRCCPs) with a general class of convex uncertain constraints under data-driven Wasserstein ambiguity sets. It is known that robust chance constraints can be conservatively approximated by worst-case conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) constraints. It is shown that the proposed worst-case CVaR approximation model can be reformulated as an optimization problem involving biconvex constraints for joint DRCCP. We then derive a convex relaxation of this a…
In this paper, we study a class of fractional semi-infinite polynomial programming problems involving s.o.s-convex polynomial functions. For such a problem, by a conic reformulation proposed in our previous work and the quadratic modules associated with the index set, a hierarchy of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations can be constructed and convergent upper bounds of the optimum can be obtained. In this paper, by introducing Lasserre's measure-based representation of nonnegative polynomials on the index set to the conic reformulation, we present a new SDP relaxation method for the consi…
We determine the maximal gap between the optimal values of an integer program and its linear programming relaxation, where the matrix and cost function are fixed but the right hand side is unspecified. Our formula involves irreducible decomposition of monomial ideals. The gap can be computed in polynomial time when the dimension is fixed.
We present a convex-concave reformulation of the reversible Markov chain estimation problem and outline an efficient numerical scheme for the solution of the resulting problem based on a primal-dual interior point method for monotone variational inequalities. Extensions to situations in which information about the stationary vector is available can also be solved via the convex- concave reformulation. The method can be generalized and applied to the discrete transition matrix reweighting analysis method to perform inference from independent chains with specified couplings between the stationar…
We provide a complexity classification of four variants of robust integer programming when the underlying Graver basis is given. We discuss applications to robust multicommodity flows and multidimensional transportation, and describe an effective parametrization of robust integer programming.
We investigate in this paper the generalized trust region subproblem (GTRS) of minimizing a general quadratic objective function subject to a general quadratic inequality constraint. By applying a simultaneous block diagonalization approach, we obtain a congruent canonical form for the symmetric matrices in both the objective and constraint functions. By exploiting the block separability of the canonical form, we show that all GTRSs with an optimal value bounded from below are second order cone programming (SOCP) representable. Our result generalizes the recent work of Ben-Tal and Hertog (Math…
In this paper, we show that the popular K-means clustering problem can equivalently be reformulated as a conic program of polynomial size. The arising convex optimization problem is NP-hard, but amenable to a tractable semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation that is tighter than the current SDP relaxation schemes in the literature. In contrast to the existing schemes, our proposed SDP formulation gives rise to solutions that can be leveraged to identify the clusters. We devise a new approximation algorithm for K-means clustering that utilizes the improved formulation and empirically illustra…
Farkas' Lemma is a foundational result in linear programming, with implications in duality, optimality conditions, and stochastic and bilevel programming. Its generalizations are known as theorems of the alternative. There exist theorems of the alternative for integer programming and conic programming. We present theorems of the alternative for conic integer programming. We provide a nested procedure to construct a function that characterizes feasibility over right-hand sides and can determine which statement in a theorem of the alternative holds.
We overview our recently introduced theory of n-fold integer programming which enables the polynomial time solution of fundamental linear and nonlinear integer programming problems in variable dimension. We demonstrate its power by obtaining the first polynomial time algorithms in several application areas including multicommodity flows and privacy in statistical databases.
In this paper, some deficiencies of a method proposed by Burdet and Johnson in 1977 for solving integer programming problems are discussed. Examples where the algorithm fails to solve the IP and ways to fix these errors are given.
We consider the problem of finding a minimum common partition of two strings (MCSP). The problem has its application in genome comparison. MCSP problem is proved to be NP-hard. In this paper, we develop an Integer Programming (IP) formulation for the problem and implement it. The experimental results are compared with the previous state-of-the-art algorithms and are found to be promising.
Binary Integer Programming (BIP) problems are of interest due in part to the difficulty they pose and because of their various applications, including those in graph theory, combinatorial optimization and network optimization. In this note, we explicitly state the Lovasz-Schrijver Semidefinite Programming (SDP) relaxation (in primal-standard form) for a BIP problem, a relaxation that yields a tighter upper-bound than the canonical Linear Programming relaxation.
The objective scaling ensemble approach is a novel two-phase heuristic for integer linear programming problems shown to be effective on a wide variety of integer linear programming problems. The technique identifies and aggregates multiple partial solutions to modify the problem formulation and significantly reduce the search space. An empirical analysis on publicly available benchmark problems demonstrate the efficacy of our approach by outperforming standard solution strategies implemented in modern optimization software.
