Keeping single-qubit quantum coherence above some threshold value not far below unity is a prerequisite for fault-tolerant quantum error correction (QEC). We study the initial dephasing of solid-state qubits in the independent-boson model, which describes well recent experiments on quantum dot (QD) excitons both in bulk and in substrates of reduced geometry such as nanotubes. Using explicit expressions for the exact coherence dynamics, a minimal QEC rate is identified in terms of the error threshold, temperature, and qubit-environment coupling strength. This allows us to systematically study the benefit of a current trend towards substrates with reduced dimensions.
We propose an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer consisted of two topological superconducting chains (TSCs) to generate coherence of Majorana qubits, each qubit is made of two Majorana zero modes (MZMs) with the definite fermion parity. We obtain the generalized exact master equation as well as its solution and study the real-time dynamics of the MZM qubit states under various operations. We demonstrate that by tuning the magnetic flux, the decoherence rates can be modified significantly, and dissipationless MZMs can be generated. By applying the bias voltage to the leads, one can manipulate MZM qub…
Dielectric loss is one of the major decoherence sources of superconducting qubits. Contemporary high-coherence superconducting qubits are formed by material systems mostly consisting of superconducting films on substrate with low dielectric loss, where the loss mainly originates from the surfaces and interfaces. Among the multiple candidates for material systems, a combination of titanium nitride (TiN) film and sapphire substrate has good potential because of its chemical stability against oxidization, and high quality at interfaces. In this work, we report a TiN film deposited onto sapphire s…
We assess independently the impact of high-temperature substrate annealing and metal deposition conditions on the coherence of transmon qubits in the standard 2D circuit-QED architecture. We restrict our study to devices made with aluminum interdigital capacitors on sapphire substrates. We record more than an order-of-magnitude improvement in the relaxation time of devices made with an annealed substrate, independent of whether a conventional evaporator or molecular beam epitaxy chamber was used to deposit the aluminum. We also infer similar levels of flux noise and photon shot noise through d…
Decoherence largely limits the physical realization of qubits and its mitigation is critical to quantum science. Here, we construct a robust qubit embedded in a decoherence-protected subspace, obtained by hybridizing an applied microwave drive with the ground-state electron spin of a silicon carbide divacancy defect. The qubit is protected from magnetic, electric, and temperature fluctuations, which account for nearly all relevant decoherence channels in the solid state. This culminates in an increase of the qubit's inhomogeneous dephasing time by over four orders of magnitude (to > 22 millise…
Quantum annealing is an optimization technique which potentially leverages quantum tunneling to enhance computational performance. Existing quantum annealers use superconducting flux qubits with short coherence times, limited primarily by the use of large persistent currents $I_\mathrm{p}$. Here, we examine an alternative approach, using qubits with smaller $I_\mathrm{p}$ and longer coherence times. We demonstrate tunable coupling, a basic building block for quantum annealing, between two flux qubits with small ($\sim 50~\mathrm{nA}$) persistent currents. Furthermore, we characterize qubit coh…
A strategy aimed at decreasing dielectric loss in coplanar waveguides (CPW) and qubits involves the creation of trenches in the underlying substrate within the gaps of the overlying metallization. Participation of contamination layers residing on surfaces and interfaces in these designs can be reduced due to the change in the effective dielectric properties between the groundplane and conductor metallization. Although finite element method approaches have been previously applied to quantify this decrease, an analytical method is presented that can uniquely address geometries possessing small t…
The coherence of electron spin qubits in semiconductor quantum dots suffers mostly from low-frequency noise. During the last decade, efforts have been devoted to mitigate such noise by material engineering, leading to substantial enhancement of the spin dephasing time for an idling qubit. However, the role of the environmental noise during spin manipulation, which determines the control fidelity, is less understood. We demonstrate an electron spin qubit whose coherence in the driven evolution is limited by high-frequency charge noise rather than the quasi-static noise inherent to any semicondu…
The realization of spin-based logical gates crucially depends on magnetically-coupled spin qubits. Thus, understanding decoherence when spin qubits are in close proximity will become a roadblock to overcome. Herein, we provide a general first-principles model that straightforwardly evaluates the spin bath effect on the qubit phase memory time $T_m$ . The method is applied to a ground-spin $J=8$ magnetic molecule 1 displaying atomic clock transitions, which remarkably increase $T_m$ at unusually high spin concentrations. Besides reproducing experimental $T_m$ values calculated by recent models …
Increasing the degree of control over physical qubits is a crucial component of quantum computing research. We report a superconducting qubit of fluxonium type with the Ramsey coherence time reaching $T_2^*= 1.48 \pm 0.13 \mathrm{~ms}$, which exceeds the state of the art value by an order of magnitude. As a result, the average single-qubit gate fidelity grew above $0.9999$, surpassing, to our knowledge, any other solid-state quantum system. Furthermore, by measuring energy relaxation of the parity-forbidden transition to second excited state, we exclude the effect of out-of-equilibrium quasipa…
Surfaces enable useful functionalities for quantum systems, e.g. as interfaces to sensing targets, but often result in surface-induced decoherence where unpaired electron spins are common culprits. Here we show that the coherence time of a near-surface qubit is increased by coherent radio-frequency driving of surface electron spins, where we use a diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center as a model qubit. This technique is complementary to other methods of suppressing decoherence, and importantly, requires no additional materials processing or control of the qubit. Further, by combining driving wi…
We present measurements of coherence and successive decay dynamics of higher energy levels of a superconducting transmon qubit. By applying consecutive $π$-pulses for each sequential transition frequency, we excite the qubit from the ground state up to its fourth excited level and characterize the decay and coherence of each state. We find the decay to proceed mainly sequentially, with relaxation times in excess of 20 $μ$s for all transitions. We also provide a direct measurement of the charge dispersion of these levels by analyzing beating patterns in Ramsey fringes. The results demonstrate t…
Decoherence of superconducting transmon qubits is purported to be consistent with surface loss from two-level systems on the substrate surface. Here, we present a study of surface loss in transmon devices, explicitly designed to have varying sensitivities to different surface loss contributors. Our experiments also encompass two particular different sapphire substrates, which reveal the onset of a yet unknown additional loss mechanism outside of surface loss for one of the substrates. Tests across different wafers and devices demonstrate substantial variation, and we emphasize the importance o…
Qubit-qubit interactions can significantly boost quantum coherence times for Bell states. The coherence-time-enhancements are however not monotonic and there exists a phase where further increasing the interaction is unhelpful. A resonator in a suggested circuit QED type implementation of the Tavis-Cummings(Dicke) model, is shown to shift this transition point depending on the number of loaded photons. This allows the resonator to amplify the coherence enhancements in certain regimes. The interactions also induce unusual collapse and revival type behavior for the entanglement dynamics. A new a…
Defects in crystals are leading candidates for photon-based quantum technologies, but progress in developing practical devices critically depends on improving defect optical and spin properties. Motivated by this need, we study a new defect qubit candidate, the shallow donor in ZnO. We demonstrate all-optical control of the electron spin state of the donor qubits and measure the spin coherence properties. We find a longitudinal relaxation time T$_1$ exceeding 100 ms, an inhomogeneous dephasing time T$_2^*$ of $17\pm2$ ns, and a Hahn spin-echo time T$_2$ of $50\pm13$ $μ$s. The magnitude of T$_2…

We study spatial noise correlations in a Si/SiGe two-qubit device with integrated micromagnets. Our method relies on the concept of decoherence-free subspaces, whereby we measure the coherence time for two different Bell states, designed to be sensitive only to either correlated or anti-correlated noise respectively. From these measurements, we find weak correlations in low-frequency noise acting on the two qubits, while no correlations could be detected in high-frequency noise. A theoretical model and numerical simulations give further insight into the additive effect of multiple independent …
The dominant source of decoherence in contemporary frequency-tunable superconducting qubits is 1/$f$ flux noise. To understand its origin and find ways to minimize its impact, we systematically study flux noise amplitudes in more than 50 flux qubits with varied SQUID geometry parameters and compare our results to a microscopic model of magnetic spin defects located at the interfaces surrounding the SQUID loops. Our data are in agreement with an extension of the previously proposed model, based on numerical simulations of the current distribution in the investigated SQUIDs. Our results and deta…
Quantum bits (qubits) are at the heart of quantum information processing schemes. Currently, solid-state qubits, and in particular the superconducting ones, seem to satisfy the requirements for being the building blocks of viable quantum computers, since they exhibit relatively long coherence times, extremely low dissipation, and scalability. The possibility of achieving quantum coherence in macroscopic circuits comprising Josephson junctions, envisioned by Legett in the 1980's, was demonstrated for the first time in a charge qubit; since then, the exploitation of macroscopic quantum effects i…
Electron charge qubits are compelling candidates for solid-state quantum computing because of their inherent simplicity in qubit design, fabrication, control, and readout. However, all existing electron charge qubits, built upon conventional semiconductors and superconductors, suffer from severe charge noise that limits the coherence time to the order of 1 microsecond. Here, we report our experimental realization of ultralong-coherence electron charge qubits, based upon isolated single electrons trapped on an ultraclean solid neon surface in vacuum. Quantum information is encoded in the motion…
Recent advances towards spin-based quantum computation have been primarily fuelled by elaborate isolation from noise sources, such as surrounding nuclear spins and spin-electric susceptibility, to extend spin coherence. In the meanwhile, addressable single-spin and spin-spin manipulations in multiple-qubit systems will necessitate sizable spin-electric coupling. Given background charge fluctuation in nanostructures, however, its compatibility with enhanced coherence should be crucially questioned. Here we realise a single-electron spin qubit with isotopically-enriched phase coherence time (20 …
Extending the qubit coherence times is a crucial task in building quantum information processing devices. In the three-dimensional cavity implementations of circuit QED, the coherence of superconducting qubits was improved dramatically due to cutting the losses associated with the photon emission. Next frontier in improving the coherence includes the mitigation of the adverse effects of superconducting quasiparticles. In these lectures, we review the basics of the quasiparticles dynamics, their interaction with the qubit degree of freedom, their contribution to the qubit relaxation rates, and …
We present measurements of superconducting flux qubits embedded in a three dimensional copper cavity. The qubits are fabricated on a sapphire substrate and are measured by coupling them inductively to an on-chip superconducting resonator located in the middle of the cavity. At their flux-insensitive point, all measured qubits reach an intrinsic energy relaxation time in the 6-20 microseconds range and a pure dephasing time comprised between 3 and 10 microseconds. This significant improvement over previous works opens the way to the coherent coupling of a flux-qubit to individual spins.
In this work, we study a series of tunable flux qubits inductively coupled to a coplanar waveguide resonator fabricated on a sapphire substrate. Each qubit includes an asymmetric superconducting quantum interference device which is controlled by the application of an external magnetic field and acts as a tunable Josephson junction. The tunability of the qubits is typically $\pm 3.5$ GHz around their central gap frequency. The measured relaxation times are limited by dielectric losses in the substrate and can attain $T_{1}\sim 8 μs$. The echo dephasing times are limited by flux noise even at op…
Semiconductor spin qubits based on spin-orbit states are responsive to electric field excitation allowing for practical, fast and potentially scalable qubit control. Spin-electric susceptibility, however, renders these qubits generally vulnerable to electrical noise, which limits their coherence time. Here we report on a spin-orbit qubit consisting of a single hole electrostatically confined in a natural silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor device. By varying the magnetic field orientation, we reveal the existence of operation sweet spots where the impact of charge noise is minimized while preser…
Spin-orbit coupling is ubiquitous in quantum dot quantum computing architectures, and makes spin qubits susceptible to charge noise. We derive a Hamiltonian describing the effect of spin-orbit and noise on a single-spin qubit in a quantum dot. Relaxation is due to noise coupling different orbital levels and is dominated by screened whole charge defects near the dot. Dephasing stems from noise causing relative fluctuations between orbital levels, and is driven by screened whole charge defects and unscreened dipole defects in the substrate. Dephasing times are vastly different between common mat…
The energy landscape of a single electron in a triple quantum dot can be tuned such that the energy separation between ground and excited states becomes a flat function of the relevant gate voltages. These so-called sweet spots are beneficial for charge coherence, since the decoherence effects caused by small fluctuations of gate voltages or surrounding charge fluctuators are minimized. We propose a new operation point for a triple quantum dot charge qubit, a so-called $CQ_3$-qubit, having a third order sweet spot. We show strong coupling of the qubit to single photons in a frequency tunable h…
Identifying and ameliorating dominant sources of decoherence are important steps in understanding and improving quantum systems. Here we show that the free induction decay time ($T_{2}^{*}$) and the Rabi decay rate ($Γ_{\mathrm{Rabi}}$) of the quantum dot hybrid qubit can be increased by more than an order of magnitude by appropriate tuning of the qubit parameters and operating points. By operating in the spin-like regime of this qubit, and choosing parameters that increase the qubit's resilience to charge noise (which we show is presently the limiting noise source for this qubit), we achieve …
Paramagnetic defects and nuclear spins are often the major sources of decoherence and spin relaxation in solid-state qubits realized by optically addressable point defect spins in semiconductors. It is commonly accepted that a high degree of depletion of nuclear spins can enhance the coherence time by reducing magnetic noise. Here we show that the isotope purification beyond a certain optimal level becomes contra-productive, when both electron and nuclear spins are present in the vicinity of the qubits. Using state-of-the-art numerical tools and considering the silicon vacancy qubit in various…
