The coherence of electron spin qubits in semiconductor quantum dots suffers mostly from low-frequency noise. During the last decade, efforts have been devoted to mitigate such noise by material engineering, leading to substantial enhancement of the spin dephasing time for an idling qubit. However, the role of the environmental noise during spin manipulation, which determines the control fidelity, is less understood. We demonstrate an electron spin qubit whose coherence in the driven evolution is limited by high-frequency charge noise rather than the quasi-static noise inherent to any semiconductor device. We employed a feedback control technique to actively suppress the latter, demonstrating a $π$-flip gate fidelity as high as $99.04\pm 0.23\,\%$ in a gallium arsenide quantum dot. We show that the driven-evolution coherence is limited by the longitudinal noise at the Rabi frequency, whose spectrum resembles the $1/f$ noise observed in isotopically purified silicon qubits.
A heavy hole confined to an InGaAs quantum dot promises the union of a stable spin and optical coherence to form a near perfect, high-bandwidth spin-photon interface. Despite theoretical predictions and encouraging preliminary measurements, the dynamic processes determining the coherence of the hole spin are yet to be understood. Here, we establish the regimes that allow for a highly coherent hole spin in these systems, recovering a crossover from hyperfine to electrical-noise dominated decoherence with a few-Tesla external magnetic field. Dynamical decoupling allows us to reach the longest gr…
Long qubit coherence and efficient atom-photon coupling are essential for advanced applications in quantum communication. One technique to maintain coherence is dynamical decoupling, where a periodic sequence of refocusing pulses is employed to reduce the interaction of the system with the environment. We experimentally study the implementation of dynamical decoupling on an optically-trapped, spin-polarized $^{87}$Rb atom. We use the two magnetic-sensitive $5S_{1/2}$ Zeeman levels, $\lvert{F=2,\ m_{F}=-2}\rangle$ and $\lvert{F=1,\ m_{F}=-1}\rangle$ as qubit states, motivated by the possibility…
We report an optical memory in a rare earth doped crystal with long storage times, up to 20 ms, together with an optical bandwidth of 1.5 MHz. This is obtained by transferring optical coherences to nuclear spin coherences, which were then protected against environmental noise by dynamical decoupling. With this approach, we achieved a 33 fold increase in spin wave storage time over the intrinsic spin coherence lifetime. Comparison between different decoupling sequences indicates that sequences insensitive to initial spin coherence increase retrieval efficiency. Finally, an interference experime…
The inhomogeneity of an electron spin ensemble as well as fluctuating environment acting upon individual spins drastically shorten the spin coherence time $T_2$ and hinder coherent spin manipulation. We show that this problem can be solved by the simultaneous application of a radiofrequency (rf) field, which stimulates coherent spin precession decoupled from an inhomogeneous environment, and periodic optical pulses, which amplify this precession. The resulting resonance, taking place when the rf field frequency approaches the laser pulse repetition frequency, has a width determined by the spin…
The effects of a collection of classical two-level charge fluctuators on the coherence of a dynamically-decoupled qubit are studied. Distinct dynamics are found at different qubit working positions. Exact analytical formulae are derived at pure dephasing and approximate solutions are found at the general working position, for weakly- and strongly-coupled fluctuators. Analysis of these solutions, combined with numerical simulations of the multiple random telegraph processes, reveal the scaling of the noise with the number of fluctuators and the number of control pulses, as well as dependence on…
We show that conditional photon detection induces instantaneous phase synchronization between two decoupled quantum limit-cycle oscillators. We consider two quantum van der Pol oscillators without mutual coupling, each with an additional linearly coupled bath, and perform continuous measurement of photon counting on the output fields of the two baths interacting through a beam splitter. It is observed that in-phase or anti-phase coherence of the two decoupled oscillators instantaneously increases after the photon detection and then decreases gradually in the weak quantum regime or quickly in t…
Electron spins in silicon quantum dots are promising qubits due to their long coherence times, scalable fabrication, and potential for all-electrical control. However, charge noise in the host semiconductor presents a major obstacle to achieving high-fidelity single- and two-qubit gates in these devices. In this work, we measure the charge-noise spectrum of a Si/SiGe singlet-triplet qubit over nearly 12 decades in frequency using a combination of methods, including dynamically-decoupled exchange oscillations with up to 512 π pulses during the qubit evolution. The charge noise is colored across…
We continuously observe dynamical decoupling in a spin-1 quantum gas using a weak optical measurement of spin precession. Continuous dynamical decoupling aims to dramatically modify the character and energy spectrum of spin states to render them insensitive to parasitic fluctuations. Continuous observation measures this new spectrum in a single-preparation of the quantum gas. The measured time-series contains seven tones, which spectrogram analysis parses as splittings, coherences, and coupling strengths between the decoupled states in real-time. With this we locate a regime where a transition…
We present a mechanism for efficiency increase in quantum heat engines containing internal energy levels that do not couple to the external work sink. The gain is achieved by using these levels to channel heat in a direction opposite to the one dictated by the second law. No quantum coherence, quantum correlations or ergotropy are required. A similar mechanism allows the engine to run in reverse and still produce useful work. We illustrate these ideas using a simple quantum Otto cycle in a coupled-spin system. We find this engine also exhibits other counterintuitive phenomenology. For example,…

Single electron spins coupled to multiple nuclear spins provide promising multi-qubit registers for quantum sensing and quantum networks. The obtainable level of control is determined by how well the electron spin can be selectively coupled to, and decoupled from, the surrounding nuclear spins. Here we realize a coherence time exceeding a second for a single electron spin through decoupling sequences tailored to its microscopic nuclear-spin environment. We first use the electron spin to probe the environment, which is accurately described by seven individual and six pairs of coupled carbon-13 …
We propose a method for laser cooling group-II-like atoms without changing the quantum state of their nuclear spins, thus preserving coherences that are usually destroyed by optical pumping. As group-II-like atoms have a $^1S_0$ closed-shell ground state, nuclear spin and electronic degrees of freedom are decoupled, allowing for independent manipulation. The hyperfine interaction that couples these degrees of freedom in excited states can be suppressed through the application of external magnetic fields. Our protocol employs resolved-sideband cooling on the forbidden clock transition, $^1S_0 \…
Optically addressable spins are actively investigated in quantum communication, processing and sensing. Optical and spin coherence lifetimes, which determine quantum operation fidelity and storage time, are often limited by spin-spin interactions, which can be decreased by polarizing spins in their lower energy state using large magnetic fields and/or mK range temperatures. Here, we show that optical pumping of a small fraction of ions with a fixed frequency laser, coupled with spin-spin interactions and spin diffusion, leads to substantial spin polarization in a paramagnetic rare earth doped …
We report the simultaneous operation and two-qubit coupling measurement of a pair of two-electron spin qubits that are actively decoupled from quasistatic nuclear noise in a GaAs quadruple quantum dot array. Coherent Rabi oscillations of both qubits (decay time $\approx$2 μs; frequency few MHz) are achieved by continuously tuning the drive frequency using rapidly converging real-time Hamiltonian estimators. By state conditional exchange oscillation measurements, we also observe strong two-qubit capacitive interaction (> 190 MHz). We show that the scaling of the capacitive interaction with resp…
The noise decoupling problem is investigated for general N-level Markovian open quantum systems. Firstly, the concept of Cartan decomposition of the Lie algebra $su(N)$ is introduced as a tool of designing control Hamiltonians. Next, under certain assumptions, it is shown that a part of variables of the coherence vector of the system density matrix can be asymptotically decoupled from the environmental noises. The resulting noise decoupling scheme is applied to one-qubit, qutrit and two-qubit quantum systems, by which the coherence evolution of the one-qubit and qutrit systems can always be as…
Quantum Landauer's principle provides a fundamental lower bound for energy dissipation occurred with information erasure in the quantum regime. While most studies have related the entropy reduction incorporated with the erasure to the lower bound~(entropic bound), recent efforts have also provided another lower bound associated with the thermal fluctuation of the dissipated energy~(thermodynamic bound). The coexistence of the two bounds has stimulated comparative studies of their properties; however, these studies were performed for systems where the time-evolution of diagonal (population) and…
Quantum computers have the potential to solve certain interesting problems significantly faster than classical computers. To exploit the power of a quantum computation it is necessary to perform inter-qubit operations and generate entangled states. Spin qubits are a promising candidate for implementing a quantum processor due to their potential for scalability and miniaturization. However, their weak interactions with the environment, which leads to their long coherence times, makes inter-qubit operations challenging. We perform a controlled two-qubit operation between singlet-triplet qubits u…
It has been experimentally demonstrated that quantum coherence can persist in macroscopic phenomena [J.R. Friedman et al.,Nature, 406 (2000) 43]. To face the challenge of this new fact, in this article QM in its standard form is assumed to be extended by one beable (hidden variable), i. e., a quantum observable with always definite values in nature (but usually only statistically given in the quantum state). Localization is taken as the most plausible beable. The paradoxical aspects of conventional QM take now a different form. Suitably defining the notion of "subject" fully within the QM form…
We have investigated decoherence in Josephson-junction flux qubits. Based on the measurements of decoherence at various bias conditions, we discriminate contributions of different noise sources. In particular, we present a Gaussian decay function of the echo signal as evidence of dephasing due to $1/f$ flux noise whose spectral density is evaluated to be about $(10^{-6} Φ_0)^2$/Hz at 1 Hz. We also demonstrate that at an optimal bias condition where the noise sources are well decoupled the coherence observed in the echo measurement is mainly limited by energy relaxation of the qubit.

Quantum data is susceptible to decoherence induced by the environment and to errors in the hardware processing it. A future fault-tolerant quantum computer will use quantum error correction (QEC) to actively protect against both. In the smallest QEC codes, the information in one logical qubit is encoded in a two-dimensional subspace of a larger Hilbert space of multiple physical qubits. For each code, a set of non-demolition multi-qubit measurements, termed stabilizers, can discretize and signal physical qubit errors without collapsing the encoded information. Experimental demonstrations of QE…
We demonstrate a two-qubit logic gate driven by near-field microwaves in a room-temperature microfabricated ion trap. We measure a gate fidelity of 99.7(1)\%, which is above the minimum threshold required for fault-tolerant quantum computing. The gate is applied directly to $^{43}$Ca$^+$ "atomic clock" qubits (coherence time $T_2^*\approx 50\,\mathrm{s}$) using the microwave magnetic field gradient produced by a trap electrode. We introduce a dynamically-decoupled gate method, which stabilizes the qubits against fluctuating a.c.\ Zeeman shifts and avoids the need to null the microwave field.

Scaling the number of qubits while maintaining high-fidelity quantum gates remains a key challenge for quantum computing. Presently, superconducting quantum processors with >50-qubits are actively available. For such systems, fixed-frequency transmons are attractive due to their long coherence and noise immunity. However, scaling fixed-frequency architectures proves challenging due to precise relative frequency requirements. Here we employ laser annealing to selectively tune transmon qubits into desired frequency patterns. Statistics over hundreds of annealed qubits demonstrate an empirical tu…
We study the photon shot noise dephasing of a superconducting transmon qubit in the strong-dispersive limit, due to the coupling of the qubit to its readout cavity. As each random arrival or departure of a photon is expected to completely dephase the qubit, we can control the rate at which the qubit experiences dephasing events by varying \textit{in situ} the cavity mode population and decay rate. This allows us to verify a pure dephasing mechanism that matches theoretical predictions, and in fact explains the increased dephasing seen in recent transmon experiments as a function of cryostat te…
Many-body correlations govern a variety of important quantum phenomena such as the emergence of superconductivity and magnetism. Understanding quantum many-body systems is thus one of the central goals of modern sciences. Here we demonstrate an experimental approach towards this goal by utilizing an ultracold Rydberg gas generated with a broadband picosecond laser pulse. We follow the ultrafast evolution of its electronic coherence by time-domain Ramsey interferometry with attosecond precision. The observed electronic coherence shows an ultrafast oscillation with a period of 1 femtosecond, who…
Solid-state systems which mimic two-level atoms are being actively developed. Improving the quantum coherence of these systems, for instance spin qubits or single photon emitters using semiconductor quantum dots, involves dealing with noise. The sources of noise are inherent to the semiconductor and are complex. Charge noise results in a fluctuating electric field, spin noise in a fluctuating magnetic field at the location of the qubit, and both can lead to dephasing and decoherence of optical and spin states. We investigate noise in an ultra-pure semiconductor using a minimally-invasive, ultr…

Inhomogeneously broadened spin ensembles play an important role in present-day implementation of hybrid quantum processing architectures. When coupled to a resonator such an ensemble may serve as a multi-mode quantum memory for the resonator field, and by employing spin-refocusing techniques the quantum memory time can be extended to the coherence time of individual spins in the ensemble. In the present paper we investigate such a memory protocol capable of storing an unknown resonator-field state, and we examine separately the various constituents of the protocol: the storage and read-out par…
The accumulation of quantum phase in response to a signal is the central mechanism of quantum sensing, as such, loss of phase information presents a fundamental limitation. For this reason approaches to extend quantum coherence in the presence of noise are actively being explored. Here we experimentally protect a room-temperature hybrid spin register against environmental decoherence by performing repeated quantum error correction whilst maintaining sensitivity to signal fields. We use a long-lived nuclear spin to correct multiple phase errors on a sensitive electron spin in diamond and realiz…
The long coherence time of a single nitrogen vacancy (NV) center spin in diamond is a crucial advantage for implementing quantum information processing. However, the realization of strong coupling between single NV spins is challenging. Here we propose a method to greatly enchance the interaction between two single NV spins in diamond which are only weakly coupled to an electromechanical cavity. Owing to the presence of a critical point for the linearized electromechanical subsystem, the coupling between a single NV spin and the high-frequency polariton (formed by the mechanical and cavity mod…
