By employing mutual-inductance technique and using a high-sensitive bridge, we have thoroughly investigated (both experimentally and theoretically) the temperature and magnetic field dependence of complex AC susceptibility of artificially prepared highly ordered (periodic) two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays (2D-JJA) of both shunted and unshunted Nb-based tunnel junctions as well as disordered three-dimensional arrays (3D-JJA). This paper reviews some of our latest results regarding the influence of non-uniform critical current density profile on magnetic field behavior of AC susceptibility in 2D-JJA, and the origin of remanent magnetization in disordered 3D-JJAs.
Using the functional integral method, we construct a theory of heterotic SIS Josephson junctions between single- and two-gap superconductors. The theory predicts the presence of in-phase and out-of-phase collective oscillation modes of superconducting phases. The former corresponds to the Josephson plasma mode whose frequency is drastically reduced for $\pm$ s-wave symmetry, and the latter is a counterpart of Leggett's mode in Josephson junctions. We also reveal that the critical current and the Fraunhofer pattern strongly depend on the symmetry type of the two-gap superconductor.
The Josephson vortex formed in a superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junction can affect the quantum mechanics of quasiparticles by creating an effective adiabatic potential determined by the inhomogeneous distribution of the phase difference of the order parameter along the junction. Starting from the quasiclassical version of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) theory, we found the quasiparticle spectrum and the local density of states (DOS) both for the isolated Josephson vortex and the vortex chain. The spatially resolved DOS reveals a peculiar two-peak structure for each Josephson vo…
We present our new fabrication Process for Superconductor Electronics (PSE2) that integrates two (2) layers of Josephson junctions in a fully planarized multilayer process on 200-mm wafers. The two junction layers can be, e.g., conventional Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (SIS) Nb/Al/AlO_x/Nb junctions with the same or different Josephson critical current densities, J_c. The process also allows integration of high-J_c Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor (SFS) or SFS'S JJs on the first junction layer with Nb/Al/AlO_x/Nb trilayer junctions on the second junction layer, or vice vers…
We study the peculiarities in current-phase relations (CPR) of the SIsFS junction in the region of $0$ to $π$ transition. These CPR consist of two independent branches corresponding to $0-$ and $π-$ states of the contact. We have found that depending on the transparency of the SIs tunnel barrier the decrease of the s-layer thickness leads to transformation of the CPR shape going in the two possible ways: either one of the branches exists only in discrete intervals of the phase difference $φ$ or both branches are sinusoidal but differ in the magnitude of their critical currents. We demonstrate …
We investigate Magnetic Josephson Junction (MJJ) - a superconducting device with ferromagnetic barrier for a scalable high-density cryogenic memory compatible with energy-efficient single flux quantum (SFQ) circuits. The superconductor-insulator-superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor (SIS'FS) MJJs are analyzed both experimentally and theoretically. We found that the properties of SIS'FS junctions fall into two distinct classes based on the thickness of S' layer. We fabricate Nb-Al/AlOx-Nb-PdFe-Nb SIS'FS MJJs using a co-processing approach with a combination of HYPRES and ISSP fabrication pr…
An intrinsic gap depression at the Superconductor-Insulator interface due to the very short value of the coherence length in High-Tc Superconductors [HTSs] is considered, in the framework of a mixed (s+id)-wave pair symmetry for the order parameter ranging from pure s to pure d-wave. This gap depression acts as the main physical agent causing the relevant reduction of IcRn(T) values with respect to BCS expectations in HTS SIS Josephson junctions. Good agreement with various experimental data is obtained with both pure s-wave and pure d-wave symmetries of the order parameter, but with amounts o…
We highlight the reproducibility and level of control over the electrical properties of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ Josephson junctions fabricated with irradiation from a focused helium ion beam. Specifically, we show the results of electrical transport properties for several junctions fabricated using a large range of irradiation doses. At the lower end of this range, junctions exhibit superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction properties. However, as dose increases there is a transition to electrical characteristics consistent with superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS…
Motivated by recent progress in development of cryogenic memory compatible with single flux quantum (SFQ) circuits we have performed a theoretical study of magnetic SIsFS Josephson junctions, where 'S' is a bulk superconductor, 's' is a thin superconducting film, 'F' is a metallic ferromagnet and 'I' is an insulator. We calculate the Josephson current as a function of s and F layers thickness, temperature and exchange energy of F film. We outline several modes of operation of these junctions and demonstrate their unique ability to have large product of a critical current $I_{C}$ and a normal-s…
We propose a mechanism of coherent emission from driven vortices in stacked intrinsic Josephson junctions. In contrast to super-radiance, which occurs only for highly ordered vortex lattices, we predict resonant radiation emission from weakly correlated vortex arrays. Our analytical results for the THz wave intensity, resonance frequencies, and the dependence of THz emission power on dissipation are in good agreement with the ones obtained by recent simulations.
We have studied the superconducting-insulating phase transition in a disordered two-dimensional Josephson junction array, using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. We consider disorder in both the capacitive energies and in the values of the offset charges. The calculated phase diagram shows that the lobe structure of the phase diagram disappears for sufficiently strong disorder in the offset charge. Our results agree quite well with previous calculations carried out using a mean-field approximation.
We consider a superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junction in which the tunnelling through the insulating barrier is dominated by a localized ``negative U'' center. We show that the $I_{c}R$ product of the junction depends sensitively on the spectrum of impurity states, and in near resonant condiditions exhibits an anomalously large I$_c$R product which can exceed the famous Ambegoakar-Baratoff limit by an arbitrarily large factor. The analysis is extended to problems in which there is an array of negative U centers in the junction. We also discuss general reasons to expect significa…
We present the results of theoretical study of Current-Phase Relations (CPR) in Josephson junctions of SIsFS type, where 'S' is a bulk superconductor and 'IsF' is a complex weak link consisting of a superconducting film 's', a metallic ferromagnet 'F' and an insulating barrier 'I'. We calculate the relationship between Josephson current and phase difference. At temperatures close to critical, calculations are performed analytically in the frame of the Ginsburg-Landau equations. At low temperatures numerical method is developed to solve selfconsistently the Usadel equations in the structure. We…
We investigate the influence of quantum fluctuations and weak disorder on the vortex dynamics in a two-dimensional superconducting Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless system. The temperature below which quantum fluctuations dominate the vortex creep is determined, and the transport in this quantum regime is described. The crossover from quantum to classical regime is discussed and the quantum correction to the classical current-voltage relation is determined. It is found that weak disorder can effectively reduce the critical current as compared to that in the clean system.
We calculate current-phase relation (CPR) of a SN-S-SN Josephson junction based on a variable thickness SN bilayer composed of highly disordered superconductor (S) and low-resistive normal metal (N) with proximity induced superconductivity. In case when the thickness of S,N layers and length of S constriction is about of superconducting coherence length the CPR is single-valued, could be close to sinusoidal one and the product $I_cR_n$ can reach $Δ(0)/2|e|$ ($I_c$ is the critical current of the junction, $R_n$ is its normal-state resistance, $Δ(0)$ is the superconductor gap of single S layer a…
We experimentally studied the effect of positional disorder on a Josephson junction array with $f = n$, ${1/2} + n$, or ${2/5} + n$ flux quanta per unit cell for integral $n$. This system provides an experimental realization of a two-dimensional XY model with random phase shifts. Contrary to many earlier numerical and analytical investigations, our results suggest that low-temperature superconductivity is never destroyed by positional disorder. As the disorder strength increased, the Kosterltz-Thouless (KT) type order in the $f = 0$ and 1/2 systems changed to a non-KT type order with a long-ra…
We discuss how to control dc Josephson current by influencing the structure and nonequilibrium population of Andreev levels via external electrostatic gates, external current injection and electromagnetic radiation. In particular we will consider the "giant" Josephson current in "long" SIS tunnel junctions and the regular and anomalous nonequilibrium Josephson currents in three terminal SNS junctions. We will briefly discuss applications to the Josephson field effect transistor (JOFET) and to the newly invented Josephson interference transistor (JOINT).
We study the Josephson effect between weakly coupled d-wave superconductors within the quasiclassical theory, in particular, the influence of interface roughness on the current-phase relation and the critical current of mirror junctions and $45^\circ$ asymmetric junctions. For mirror junctions the temperature dependence of the critical current is non-monotonic in the limit of low roughness, but monotonic for very rough interfaces. For $45^\circ$ asymmetric junctions with a linear dimension much larger than the superconducting coherence length we find a $\sin(2ϕ)$-like current-phase relation, w…
The point contact tunneling technique is used to examine quasiparticle and Josephson currents in overdoped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) single crystals with bulk T$_{c}$ values near 62 K. High quality superconductor-insulator-normal metal (SIN) tunnel junctions are formed between Bi-2212 crystals and a Au tip, which display well-resolved quasiparticle gap features including sharp conductance peaks. Reproducible superconductor- insulator-superconductor (SIS) tunnel junctions are also obtained between two pieces of the Bi-2212 crystals, resulting in simultaneous quasiparticle an…
We show that SIS Josephson junctions have a threshold resistance, above which the Josephson coupling and the supercurrents become extremely small, due to the shrinking of the Cooper pair size during the Josephson tunneling. Accordingly, the threshold resistance is smaller for higher Tc superconductors with small Cooper pair size and for the insulating barrier with higher resistance. This understanding agrees with the observations in SIS junctions of low Tc superconductors, such as Sn, Pb, and Nb. For MgB2 it explains why the big gap does not show the supercurrents, unlike the small gap. Furthe…
We derive the qualitative behavior of superconductor-antiferromagnet- superconductor (SAS) Josephson junctions described by Zhang's SO(5) theory. The main differences between these junctions and conventional SIS junctions arise from the non-sinusoidal current-phase relation derived by Demler et al. for thin SAS junctions. Using a simple approximation to this non-sinusoidal function, the current voltage relation, Shapiro steps, thermal fluctuation effects and the diffraction pattern in a magnetic field are obtained.
We study the superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition in disordered Josephson junction chains. To this end, we derive the field theory from the lattice model that describes a chain of superconducting islands with a capacitive coupling to the ground ($C_0$) as well as between the islands ($C_1$). We analyze the theory in the short-range ($C_1 \ll C_0$) and in the long-range ($C_1 \gg C_0$) limits. The transition to the insulating state is driven by the proliferation of quantum phase slips. The most important source of disorder originates from trapped charges in the substrate that suppr…
The interplay of interactions and disorder in low-dimensional superconductors supports the formation of multiple quantum phases, as possible instabilities of the Superconductor-Insulator Transition (SIT) at a singular quantum critical point. We explore a one-dimensional model which exhibits such variety of phases in the strongly quantum fluctuations regime. Specifically, we study the effect of weak disorder on a two-leg Josephson ladder with comparable Josephson and charging energies ($E_J$~$E_C$). An additional key feature of our model is the requirement of perfect $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetry, re…
We study the dynamics of vortices in strongly disordered $d=2$ Josephson junction arrays and superconducting films driven by a current. We find a dynamic phase transition in vortex flow at a current $I_p>I_c$. Below $I_p$ there is plastic flow characterized by an average-velocity correlation length scale $ξ_v$ in the direction of motion, which diverges when approaching $I_p$. Above $I_p$ we find a moving vortex phase with homogeneous flow and short range smectic order. A finite size analysis shows that this phase becomes asymptotically a liquid for large length scales.
We study the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, of an array of fluctuating, maximally gapped interacting ladders, embedded in a disordered plane. Renormalization group analysis indicates that geometrical fluctuations mitigate the suppression of the intra-ladder pairing correlations by the disorder. In addition, the fluctuations enhance the Josephson tunneling between the ladders. Both effects lead to an increase of T_c in the Josephson coupled array. These findings may be relevant to the understanding of the 1/8 anomaly in the lanthanum based high-temperature superconductors.
In a recent letter, henceforth referred to as Ref.[1], You et al postulate that Bi2212 factually represents a series array of SIS junctions and claim that the nonlinear current-voltage characteristics (IVC) of their bridge are free of heating. Earlier experiments cast serious doubt upon the accuracy of the principal postulate (of this letter), see Ref.[2] and references therein. In what follows I will demonstrate that the major claim by the authors of Ref.[1] is at odds with their own data which suggest an extrinsic cause for the IVC nonlinearities.
The superconducting-insulator transition is simulated in disordered networks of Josephson junctions with thermally activated Arrhenius-like resistive shunt. By solving the conductance matrix of the network, the transition is reproduced in different experimental conditions by tuning thickness, charge density and disorder degree. In particular, on increasing fluctuations of the parameters entering the Josephson coupling and the Coulomb energy of the junctions, the transition occurs for decreasing values of the critical temperature Tc and increasing values of the activation temperature To. The re…
A tight-binding approach based on the Chebyshev-Bogoliubov-de Gennes method is used to describe disordered single-layer graphene Josephson junctions. Scattering by vacancies, ripples or charged impurities is included. We compute the Josephson current and investigate the nature of multiple Andreev reflections, which induce bound states appearing as peaks in the density of states for energies below the superconducting gap. In the presence of single atom vacancies, we observe a strong suppression of the supercurrent that is a consequence of strong inter-valley scattering. Although lattice deforma…
Power generation and synchronisation in Josephson junction arrays have attracted attention for a long time. This stems from fundamental interest in nonlinear coupled systems as well as from potential in practical applications. In this paper we study the case of an array of junctions coupled to a distributed transmission line either driven by an external microwave or in a self-oscillating mode. We simplify the theoretical treatment in terms of harmonic analysis and power balance. We apply the model to explain the large operation margins of SNS- and SINIS-junction arrays. We show the validity of…

An extension of the Ambegaokar-Baratoff relation to a superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) Josephson junction with multiple tunneling channels is derived. Appling the resultant relation to a SIS Josephson junction formed by an iron-based (five-band) and a single-band Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) type superconductors, a theoretical bound of the Josephson critical current ($I_{\rm c}$) multiplied by the resistance of the junction ($R_{\rm n}$) is given. We reveal that such a bound is useful for identifying the pairing symmetry of iron-pnictide superconductors. One finds that if a mea…
The most developed integrated receivers for THz radiation nowadays are based on Josephson junction SIS devices. In this kind of devices, the highest receivable frequency is determined by the energy gap of the superconducting electrodes and limited to approximately 700 GHz in case of Nb/AlOx/Nb multilayers. We have developed a technology for NbN/AlN/NbN Josephson junctions on sapphire substrates which allow operation at frequencies above 1 THz. The trilayers are deposited in-situ in a 3-chamber DC-magnetron sputtering system at temperatures as high as 775 °C. Each layer is reactively sputtered …
We study supercurrent and proximity vortices in a Josephson junction made of disordered surface states of a three-dimensional topological insulator with a proximity induced in-plane helical magnetization. In a regime where the rotation period of helical magnetization is larger than the junction width, we find supercurrent 0-π crossovers as a function of junction thickness, magnetization strength, and parameters inherent to the helical modulation and surface states. The supercurrent reversals are associated with proximity induced vortices, nucleated along the junction width, where the number of…
We consider a planar SIS-type Josephson junction between diffusive superconductors (S) through an insulating tunnel interface (I). We construct fully self-consistent perturbation theory with respect to the interface conductance. As a result, we find correction to the first Josephson harmonic and calculate the second Josephson harmonic. At arbitrary temperatures, we correct previous results for the nonsinusoidal current-phase relation in Josephson tunnel junctions, which were obtained with the help of conjectured form of solution. Our perturbation theory also describes the difference between th…
A magnetic field induced electric polarization and the corresponding change of an effective junction capacitance are considered within a 3D model of disordered Josephson junction arrays. At some threshold field (near the Josephson network critical field), the effective junction charge and the related capacitance are shown to reach a maximum and to change a sign, respectively. A possibility to observe the predicted effects in artificially prepared arrays of superconducting grains is discussed.
We study a diffusive superconductor - normal metal - superconductor (SNS) junction in an external magnetic field. In the limit of a long junction, we find that the form of the dependence of the Josephson current on the field and on the length of the junction depends on the ratio between the junction width and the length associated with the magnetic field. A certain critical ratio between these two length scales separates two different regimes. In narrow junctions, the critical current exhibits a pure decay as a function of the junction length or of the magnetic field. In wide junctions, the cr…
Relaxation of the intergranular critical state has been observed at a very low applied magnetic field (10-50 Oe) over a temperature regime of 20-77 K in bulk polycrystalline YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-x) (YBCO) and Bi(1.75)Pb(0.35)Sr(2)Ca(2)Cu(3)O(10+x) (BPSCCO) samples. In such a disordered Josephson junction network, the relaxation is slower than the intragranular relaxation and, hence, it yields higher flux pinning energy U0 than the corresponding intragranular values. Silver addition seems to have given rise to much uniformity in the grain boundary characteristics which results in sharp drop in the fl…
Based upon the recently introduced thermophase and piezophase mesoscopic quantum effects in Josephson junctions, several novel phenomena in a twisted superconductor (containing a small annular SIS-type contact) under influence of thermal gradient and applied magnetic field are predicted. Namely, we consider a torsional analog of Josephson piezomagnetism (and related magnetomechanical effect) as well as a possible generation of a heat flux induced magnetic moment in a weakly-coupled superconductor under a torsional deformation (analog of Zavaritskii effect) along with the concomitant phenomena …
We tested oxidized titanium layers as barriers for hybrid Josephson junctions with high $I_cR_n$-products and for the preparation of junctions for tunneling spectroscopy. For that we firstly prepared junctions with conventional superconductor electrodes lead and niobium, respectively. By tuning the barrier thickness we were able to change the junctions' behavior from a Josephson junction to tunnel-like behavior applicable for quasi-particle spectroscopy. Subsequently, we transferred the technology to junctions using Co-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition as base…
We report on the development of highly sensitive SQUIDs featuring sub-micrometer loop dimensions. The integration of high quality and low capacitance SIS Nb/AlOx/Nb cross-type Josephson tunnel junctions results in white flux noise levels as low as 66 n$Φ_0$/Hz$^{ 1/2} $, well below state-of-the-art values of their Nb-based counterparts based on constriction type junctions. Estimation of the spin sensitivity of the best SQUIDs yield $S_μ^{ 1/2} < 7 μ_B$/Hz$^{ 1/2} $ in the white noise region, suitable for the investigation of small spin systems. We discuss fabrication challenges, show results o…
We study synchronization in disordered arrays of Josephson junctions. In the first half of the paper, we consider the relation between the coupled resistively- and capacitively shunted junction (RCSJ) equations for such arrays and effective phase models of the Winfree type. We describe a multiple-time scale analysis of the RCSJ equations for a ladder array of junctions \textit{with non-negligible capacitance} in which we arrive at a second order phase model that captures well the synchronization physics of the RCSJ equations for that geometry. In the second half of the paper, motivated by rece…
We investigate the Josephson effect in S$_{\rm F}$XS$_{\rm F}$ junctions, where S$_{\rm F}$ is a superconducting material with a ferromagnetic exchange field, and X a weak link. The critical current $I_c$ increases with the (antiparallel) exchange fields if the distribution of transmission eigenvalues of the X-layer has its maximum weight at small values. This exchange field enhancement of the supercurrent does not exist if X is a diffusive normal metal. At low temperatures, there is a correspondence between the critical current in an S$_{\rm F}$IS$_{\rm F}$ junction with collinear orientation…
In this work we study the remanent magnetization exhibited by tridimensional disordered high-Tc Josephson junction arrays excited by an AC magnetic field. The effect, as predicted by numerical simulations and previously verified for a low-Tc array of Nb, occurs in a limited range of temperatures. We also show that the magnetized state can be excited and detected by two alternative experimental routines.
In this paper we determine the magnetic field dependence of the critical current of a tridimensional disordered Josephson junction array (3D-DJJA). A contactless configuration, employing measurements of the AC-susceptibility, is used to evaluate the average critical current of an array of YBa2Cu3O7-x. The critical field necessary to switch off supercurrents through the weak links at the working temperature is also obtained.
In this contribution we present a simple and effective procedure to determine the average critical current of a tridimensional disordered Josephson junction array (3D-DJJA). Using a contactless configuration we evaluate the average critical current and the typical width of the distribution through the analysis of the isothermal susceptibility response to the excitation field amplitude, chiAC(h). A 3D-DJJA fabricated from granular Nb is used to illustrate the method.
Phase transitions of a flux lattice in layered superconductors with magnetic field perpendicular to the layers and in presence of disorder are studied. We find that disorder generates a random Josephson coupling between layers which leads to a Josephson glass (JG) phase at low temperatures; vanishing of the JG order identifies a depinning transition. We also find that disorder and thermal fluctuations lead to layer decoupling where the renormalized Josephson coupling vanishes. Near decoupling an anharmonic regime is found, where usual elasticity and the resulting Bragg glass are not valid. The…
An effective free energy of a two dimensional (i.e. large area) Josephson Junctions is derived, allowing for thermal fluctuations, for random magnetic fields and for external currents. We show by using replica symmetry breaking methods, that the junction has four distinct phases: disordered, Josephson ordered, a glass phase and a coexisting Josephson order with the glass phase. Near the coexistence to glass transition at s=1/2 the critical current is ~ (area)^{-s+1/2} where s is a measure of disorder. Our results may account for junction ordering at temperatures well below the critical tempera…
The electric conductivities in glass phases of three-dimensional (3D) granular superconductors in magnetic fields are examined based on a quantum disordered Josephson-junction array. A correct inclusion of the Ohmic dissipative dynamics leads to glass phases with divergent dc conductivity. In contrast, with no dissipative term, a metallic response in a glass phase is obtained irrespective of the range of correlation of quenched disorder, i.e., even in the so-called Bose-glass phase with experimentally vanishing resistivity.
In this work we study the magnetic remanence exhibited by Josephson junction arrays in response to an excitation with an AC magnetic field. The effect, predicted by numerical simulations to occur in a range of temperatures, is clearly seen in our tridimensional disordered arrays. We also discuss the influence of the critical current distribution on the temperature interval within which the array develops a magnetic remanence. This effect can be used to determine the critical current distribution of an array.
For high-performance superconducting quantum devices based on Josephson junctions (JJs) decreasing lateral sizes is of great importance. Fabrication of sub-μm JJs is challenging due to non-flat surfaces with step heights of up to several 100 nm generated during the fabrication process. We have refined a fabrication process with significantly decreased film thicknesses, resulting in almost flat surfaces at intermediate steps during the JJ definition. In combination with a mix-&-match process, combining electron-beam lithography (EBL) and conventional photolithography, we can fabricate JJs with …
Tunneling spectroscopy measurements are reported on optimally-doped and overdoped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ single crystals. A novel point contact method is used to obtain superconductor-insulator-normal metal (SIN) and SIS break junctions as well as intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJ) from nanoscale crystals. Three junction types are obtained on the same crystal to compare the quasiparticle peaks and higher bias dip/hump structures which have also been found in other surface probes such as scanning tunneling spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. However, our IJ…
