We calculate current-phase relation (CPR) of a SN-S-SN Josephson junction based on a variable thickness SN bilayer composed of highly disordered superconductor (S) and low-resistive normal metal (N) with proximity induced superconductivity. In case when the thickness of S,N layers and length of S constriction is about of superconducting coherence length the CPR is single-valued, could be close to sinusoidal one and the product $I_cR_n$ can reach $Δ(0)/2|e|$ ($I_c$ is the critical current of the junction, $R_n$ is its normal-state resistance, $Δ(0)$ is the superconductor gap of single S layer at zero temperature). We argue that the normal layer should provide good heat removal from S constriction and there is range of parameters when current-voltage characteristic is not hysteretic and $I_cR_n$ is relatively large.
We investigate the dynamics of a resistively shunted Josephson junction. We compute the Josephson frequency and the generalized impedances for a variety of the parameters, particularly with relevance to predicting the measurable effects of zero-temperature current noise in the resistor.
The intrinsic nonlinearity of Josephson junctions converts Gaussian current noise in the input into non-Gaussian voltage noise in the output. For a resistively shunted Josephson junction with white input noise we determine numerically exactly the properties of the few lowest cumulants of the voltage fluctuations, and we derive analytical expressions for these cumulants in several important limits. The statistics of the voltage fluctuations is found to be Gaussian at bias currents well above the Josephson critical current, but Poissonian at currents below the critical value. In the transition r…
We use driven Monte Carlo dynamics to study the resistive behavior of superconducting Josephson junction arrays on a honeycomb lattice in a magnetic field corresponding to $f$ flux quantum per plaquette. While for $f=1/3$ the onset of zero resistance is found at nonzero temperature, for $f=1/2$ the results are consistent with a transition scenario where the critical temperature vanishes and the linear resistivity shows thermally activated behavior. We determine the thermal critical exponent of the zero-temperature transition for $f=1/2$, from a dynamic scaling analysis of the nonlinear resisti…
We describe resistive states of the system combining two types of orderings - superconducting and ferromagnetic one. It is shown that in the presence of magnetization dynamics such systems become inherently dissipative and in principle cannot sustain any amount of the superconducting current because of the voltage generated by the magnetization dynamics. We calculate generic current-voltage characteristics of a superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor Josephson junction with an unpinned domain wall and find the low-current resistance associated with the domain wall motion. We suggest the fini…
In this paper, we present data for two nanocrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) samples which both exhibit Josephson-like Colossal Resistive Switching (JCRS) in voltage-current (V-I) traces from 4.2 K up to room temperature, in magnetic fields up to 8 T. We report Josephson-like hysteresis for both positive and negative current that has not been observed before in colossal resistive switching materials. Non-zero resistance was measured in transport measurements at all temperatures. At low temperatures (< 90 K), we also observed the usual properties for YBCO including weak superconducting and paramag…
This is a detailed derivation of the equation for the voltage noise of a resistively shunted Josephson junction with non-sinusoidal current-phase relation, which was presented in Sov. Phys. JETP {\bf 67}, 579 (1988).
We present a cluster algorithm for resistively shunted Josephson junctions and similar physical systems, which dramatically improves sampling efficiency. The algorithm combines local updates in Fourier space with rejection-free cluster updates which exploit the symmetries of the Josephson coupling energy. As an application, we consider the localization transition of a single junction at intermediate Josephson coupling and determine the temperature dependence of the zero bias resistance as a function of dissipation strength.
An array of resistively and capacitively shunted Josephson junctions with nonsinusoidal current-phase relation is considered for modelling the transition in high-T$_c$ superconductors. The emergence of higher harmonics, besides the simple sinusoid $I_{c}\sinϕ$, is expected for dominant \emph{d}-wave symmetry of the Cooper pairs, random distribution of potential drops, dirty grains, or nonstationary conditions. We show that additional cosine and sine terms act respectively by modulating the global resistance and by changing the Josephson coupling of the mixed superconductive-normal states. Firs…
The spectra of the far-infrared c-axis conductivity of underdoped YBCO crystals exhibit dramatic changes of some of the phonon peaks when going from the normal to the superconducting state. We show that the most striking of these anomalies can be naturally explained by changes of the local fields acting on the ions arising from the onset of inter- and intra-bilayer Josephson effects.
We study the resistive transition in Josephson-junction arrays at $f=1/2$ flux quantum per plaquette by dynamical simulations of the resistively-shunted-junction model. The current-voltage scaling and critical dynamics of the phases are found to be well described by the same critical temperature and static exponents as for the chiral (vortex-lattice) transition. Although this behavior is consistent with a single transition scenario, where phase and chiral variables order simultaneously, two different dynamic exponents result for phase coherence and chiral order.
Bi$_2$Se$_3$ nanoribbons, grown by catalyst-free Physical Vapour Deposition, have been used to fabricate high quality Josephson junctions with Al superconducting electrodes. The conductance spectra (dI/dV) of the junctions show clear dip-peak structures characteristic of multiple Andreev reflections. The temperature dependence of the dip-peak features reveals a highly transparent Al/Bi$_2$Se$_3$ topological insulator nanoribbon interface and Josephson junction barrier. This is supported by the high values of the Bi$_2$Se$_3$ induced gap and of I$_c$R$_n$ (I$_c$ critical current, R$_n$ normal r…
Based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we provide an exact numerical solution for the critical current of Josephson junctions with a composite ferromagnetic bilayer. We demonstrate that for the antiparallel orientation of the magnetic moments of the bilayer, the presence of a potential barrier at the bilayer interface results in large oscillations of the critical current as a function of ferromagnet thickness and/or exchange field. Because of this, and remarkably, in the range of small exchange field and thicknesses, the magnetism leads to the increase of the critical current. This effec…
We review some previous studies concerning the intra-bilayer Josephson plasmons and present new ellipsometric data of the c-axis infrared response of almost optimally doped Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}. The c-axis conductivity of this compound exhibits the same kind of anomalies as that of underdoped YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-delta}. We analyze these anomalies in detail and show that they can be explained within a model involving the intra-bilayer Josephson effect and variations of the electric field inside the unit cell. The Josephson coupling energies of different bilayer compounds obtained from the op…
We study experimentally and theoretically the influence of phase-whirling (resistive) state in one junction of a two-fold Josephson stack on the fluxon motion in the other junction. In experiment, we measure the fluxon velocity versus current in one junction as a function of the state (Meissner or resistive) of the neighboring junction. The analysis, made for the limit of high fluxon density, shows that the interaction with the resistive state results in an increase of the effective damping for the moving fluxon and, therefore, in reduction of its velocity. Numerical simulations confirm this r…
We investigate a Josephson junction in an electron-hole superfluid in a double layer TMD heterostructure. Observation of a critical tunneling current is a clear signature of superfluidity. In addition, we find the BCS-BEC crossover physics in the narrow barrier region controls the critical current across the entire system. The corresponding critical velocity, which is measurable in this system, has a maximum when the excitations pass from bosonic to fermionic. Remarkably, this occurs for the density at the boundary of the BEC to BCS-BEC crossover regime determined from the condensate fraction.…
Current-voltage curves of small area hysteretic intrinsic Josephson junctions, for which the Josephson energy $E_J=\hbar J_c/2e$ is of order of thermal energy $kT$, are investigated. A non-monotonic temperature dependence of the switching current is observed and explained by thermal phase fluctuations. At low temperatures premature switching from the superconducting into the resistive state is the most important effect of fluctuations. At high temperatures only a single resistive branch is observed. At the cross-over temperature a hysteretic phase-diffusion branch exists. It shows the importan…
We demonstrate that Josephson devices with nontrivial phase difference $% 0<φ_g <π$ in the ground state can be realized in structures composed from longitudinally oriented normal metal (N) and ferromagnet (F) films in the weak link region. Oscillatory coupling across F-layer makes the first harmonic in the current-phase relation relatively small, while coupling across N-layer provides negative sign of the second harmonic. To derive quantitative criteria for a $φ$-junction, we have solved two-dimensional boundary-value problem in the frame of Usadel equations for overlap and ramp geometries of …
We report on an investigation of the redistribution of interlayer coherence in the trilayer cuprate Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10. The experiment is performed under the same apical-oxygen phonon excitation discussed in the past for the bilayer cuprate YBa2Cu3O6.5. In Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10, we observe a similar spectral weight loss at the transverse plasma mode resonance seen in YBa2Cu3O6.5. However, this feature is not accompanied by light-enhanced interlayer coherence that was seen in YBa2Cu3O6+x, for which the transverse plasma mode is observed at equilibrium even in the normal state. These new observations off…
The superconducting transition of a two-dimensional (2D) Josephson junction array exposed to weak magnetic fields has been studied experimentally. Resistance measurements reveal a superconducting-resistive phase boundary in serious disagreement with the theoretical and numerical expectations. Critical scaling analyses of the $IV$ characteristics indicate contrary to the expectations that the superconducting-to-resistive transition in weak magnetic fields is associated with a melting transition of magnetic-field-induced vortices directly from a pinned-solid phase to a liquid phase. The expected…
We theoretically investigate the phase and voltage correlation dynamics, which includes both the deterministic contribution and stochastic fluctuations, under a current noise generated by a resistor including thermal and quantum fluctuations in a resistively and capacitively shunted Josephson junction. An external current is found to shift and intensify the deterministic contributions in phase and voltage. In addition to effects of external current, we observe the relaxation of autocorrelation functions of phase and voltage, which includes the variances due to the current noise, to finite valu…
IIt is shown that in a bilayer excitonic superconductor dissipative losses emerge under transmission of the current from the source to the load. These losses are proportional to the square of the interlayer tunneling amplitude and independent on the value of the input current. The case of quantum Hall bilayer is considered. The bilayer may work as a transmission line if the input current exceeds certain critical value. The input current higher than critical one induces Josephson vortices in the bilayer. The difference of electrochemical potentials is required to feed the load and it forces Jos…
We use a driven Monte Carlo dynamics in the phase representation to determine the linear resistivity and current-voltage scaling of a two-dimensional Josephson-junction array at an irrational flux quantum per plaquette. The results are consistent with a phase-coherence transition scenario where the critical temperature vanishes. The linear resistivity is nonzero at any finite temperatures but nonlinear behavior sets in at a temperature-dependent crossover current determined by the thermal critical exponent. From a dynamic scaling analysis we determine this critical exponent and the thermally a…
Using a new cluster Monte Carlo algorithm, we study the phase diagram and critical properties of an interacting pair of resistively shunted Josephson junctions. This system models tunneling between two electrodes through a small superconducting grain, and is described by a double sine-Gordon model. In accordance with theoretical predictions, we observe three different phases and crossover effects arising from an intermediate coupling fixed point. On the superconductor-to-metal phase boundary, the observed critical behavior is within error-bars the same as in a single junction, with identical v…
We study the Josephson effect in planar $SF_1F_2S$ junctions that consist of conventional $s$-wave superconductors ($S$) connected by two metallic monodomain ferromagnets ($F_1$ and $F_2$) with arbitrary transparency of interfaces. We solve the scattering problem in the clean limit based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation for both spin-singlet and odd in frequency spin-triplet pairing correlations. We calculate numerically the Josephson current-phase relation $I(ϕ)$. While the first harmonic of $I(ϕ)$ is completely generated by spin-singlet and short-range spin-triplet superconducting correl…
We report on anomalous conductance in a resistively and capacitively shunted Josephson junction which is simultaneously driven by ac and dc currents. The dependence of the voltage across the junction on the frequency of the ac current shows windows of absolute negative conductance regimes, i.e. for a positive (negative) dc current, the voltage is negative (positive).
Equations describing the resistive state of a layered superconductor with anisotropic pairing are derived. The similarity with a stack of Josephson junctions is found at small voltages only, when current density in the direction perpendicular to the layers can be interpreted as a sum of the Josephson superconducting, the Ohmic dissipative and the interference currents. In the spatially uniform state differential conductivity at higher voltages becomes negative. Nonuniformity of the current distribution generates the branch imbalance and violates the Josephson relation between frequency and vol…
We study the proximity effect in superconductor (S), antiferromagnetic (AF) bilayers, and report the fabrication and measurement of the first trilayer S/AF/S Josephson junctions. The disordered f.c.c. alloy γ-Fe50Mn50 was used as the AF, and the S is Nb. Micron and sub-micron scale junctions were measured, and the scaling of $J_C (d_AF)$ gives a coherence length in the AF of 2.4 nm, which correlates with the coherence length due to suppression of $T_C$ in the bilayer samples. The diffusion constant for FeMn was found to be 1.7 \times 10$^{-4}$ m$^2$ s$^-1$, and the density of states at the Fer…
Using highly efficient simulations of the tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes model we solved self-consistently for the pair correlation and the Josephson current in a Superconducting-Bilayer graphene-Superconducting Josephson junction. Different doping levels for the non-superconducting link are considered in the short and long junction regime. Self-consistent results for the pair correlation and superconducting current resemble those reported previously for single layer graphene except in the Dirac point where remarkable differences in the proximity effect are found as well as a suppression o…
Micron-sized superconducting interference devices ($μ$-SQUIDs) based on constrictions optimized for minimizing thermal runaway are shown to exhibit voltage oscillations with applied magnetic flux despite their hysteretic behavior. We explain this remarkable feature by a significant supercurrent contribution surviving deep into the resistive state, due to efficient heat evacuation. A resistively shunted junction model, complemented by a thermal balance determining the amplitude of the critical current, describes well all experimental observations, including the flux modulation of the (dynamic) …
Bilayer graphene has two non-equivalent sublattices and, therefore, the same adatom impurity can manifest in spectrally distinct ways-sharp versus broad resonances near the charge neutrality-depending on the sublattice it adsorbs at. Employing Green's function analytical methods and the numerical Kwant package we investigate the spectral and transport interplay between the resonances and superconducting coherence induced in bilayer graphene by proximity to an s-wave superconductor. Analyzing doping and temperature dependencies of quasi-particle spin-relaxation rates, energies of Yu-Shiba-Rusin…
We investigate by numerical simulations the behavior of the power dissipated in a resistive load capacitively coupled to a Josephson flux flow oscillator and compare the results to those obtained for a d.c. coupled purely resistive load. Assuming realistic values for the parameters R and C, both in the high- and in the low-Tc case the power is large enough to allow the operation of such a device in applications.

We calculate the dc Josephson current for two superconductor-ferromagnet (S/F) bilayers separated by a thin insulating film. It is demonstrated that the critical Josephson current $I_{c}$ in the junction strongly depends on the relative orientation of the effective exchange field $h$ of the bilayers. We found that in the case of an antiparallel orientation, $I_{c}$ increases at low temperatures with increasing $h$ and at zero temperature has a singularity when $h$ equals the superconducting gap $Δ$. This striking behavior contrasts suppression of the critical current by the magnetic moments al…
The form of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for a resistively shunted Josephson juction array is derived with the help of the method which explicitely takes into acoount screening effects. This result is used to express the flux noise power spectrum in terms of frequency dependent sheet impedance of the array. The relation between noise amplitude and parameters of the detection coil is analysed for the simplest case of a single-loop coil.
We investigated current-voltage characteristics of unshunted and externally shunted Josephson junctions (JJs) with high critical current densities, Jc, in order to extract their basic parameters and statistical characteristics for JJ modeling in superconducting integrated circuits and to assess their potential for future technology nodes. Nb/AlOx-Al/Nb JJs with diameters from 0.5 μm to 6 μm were fabricated using a fully planarized process with Mo or MoNx thin-film shunt resistors with sheet resistance Rsq = 2 Ω/sq and Rsq = 6 Ω/sq, respectively. We used our standard MIT LL process SFQ5ee to fa…
Josephson radiation is a useful signature for detecting Majorana zero modes in topological superconductors. We study the Josephson radiation of the underdamped topological Josephson junction within the quantum resistively and capacitively shunted junction model. We show that the quantum dynamics of the Majorana two-level system induce oscillatory patterns in the Josephson emission spectra. With the Floquet method, we obtain analytical results for these oscillatory patterns and find that they are well described by Bessel functions. We perform numerical simulations to verify the analytical resul…
We investigate superconductor/insulator/ferromagnet/superconductor (SIFS) tunnel Josephson junctions in the dirty limit, using the quasiclassical theory. We consider the case of a strong tunnel barrier such that the left S layer and the right FS bilayer are decoupled. We calculate quantitatively the density of states (DOS) in the FS bilayer for arbitrary length of the ferromagnetic layer, using a self-consistent numerical method. We compare these results with a known analytical DOS approximation, which is valid when the ferromagnetic layer is long enough. Finally we calculate quantitatively th…
We consider voltage and current responses formation in DC SQUID with overdamped Josephson junctions in resistive and superconducting state in the frame of resistively shunted junction (RSJ) model. For simplicity we neglect the junction capacitance and the noise effect. Explicit expressions for the responses in resistive state were obtained for a SQUID which is symmetrical with respect to bias current injection point. Normalized SQUID inductance $l = 2 e I_c L/\hbar$ (where $I_c$ is the critical current of Josephson junction, $L$ is the SQUID inductance, $e$ is the electron charge and $\hbar$ i…
We performed magnetization measurements in a single crystal of the anisotropic bilayer pnictide superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$, with $T_c$ $\simeq$ 34 K, for $H$$\parallel$$c$-axis and $H$$\parallel$$ab$-planes. A second magnetization peak (SMP) was observed in the isothermal $M(H)$ curves measured below 16 K for $H$$\parallel$$ab$-planes. A peak in the temperature variation of the critical current density, $J_{c}$($T$), at 16 K, strongly suggests the emergence of Josephson vortices at lower temperatures, which leads to the SMP in the sample. In addition, it is noticed that the appear…
We explore novel junction configurations as an extension of our established Focused Ion Beam-based low TC SNS Junction fabrication technique. By milling a circular trench (diameter 1 micron, width 50 nm) in a 125 nm Nb 75 nm Cu bilayer we define a superconducting island connected to the bulk of the film by a normal metal barrier and entirely enclosed in-plane by the superconducting film. The circular junction properties can be probed by depositing an insulating layer over the device and drilling a 0.3 micron diameter hole down to the island to allow a Nb via to be deposited. Device behavior ha…
The long-range spin-triplet supercurrent transport is an interesting phenomenon in the superconductor/ferromagnet ($S/F$) heterostructure containing noncollinear magnetic domains. Here we study the long-range superharmonic Josephson current in asymmetric $S/F_1/F_2/S$ junctions. It is demonstrated that this current is induced by spin-triplet pairs $\mid\uparrow\uparrow\rangle-$$\mid\downarrow\downarrow\rangle$ or $\mid\uparrow\uparrow\rangle+$$\mid\downarrow\downarrow\rangle$ in the thick $F_1$ layer. The magnetic rotation of the particularly thin $F_2$ layer will not only modulate the amplitu…
We present a theoretical study of inhomogeneous dynamic (resistive) states in a single plaquette consisting of three Josephson junctions. Resonant interactions of such a breather state with electromagnetic oscillations manifest themselves by resonant current steps and voltage jumps in the current-voltage characteristics. An externally applied magnetic field leads to a variation of the relative shift between the Josephson current oscillations of two resistive junctions. By making use of the rotation wave approximation analysis and direct numerical simulations we show that this effect allows to …
In recent years many groups have used Fisher, Fisher, and Huse (FFH) dynamical scaling to investigate and demonstrate details of the superconducting phase transition. Some attention has been focused on two dimensions where the phase transition is of the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii (KTB) type. Pierson et al. used FFH dynamical scaling almost exclusively to suggest that the dynamics of the two-dimensional superconducting phase transition may be other than KTB-like. In this work we investigate the ability of scaling behavior by itself to yield useful information on the nature of the transitio…
We report measurements of the dependence on magnetic field and array size of the resistive transition of Josephson junction arrays with long-range interaction. Because every wire in these arrays has a large number of nearest-neighbors (9 or 18 in our case), a mean-field theory should provide an excellent description of this system. Our data agree well with this mean-field calculation, which predicts that Tc (the temperature below which the array exhibits macroscopic phase coherence) shows very strong commensurability effects and scales with array size.
The dynamical vortex response of a two-dimensional array of the resistively shunted Josephson junctions in a perpendicular magnetic field is inferred from simulations. It is found that, as the magnetic field is increased at a fixed temperature, the response crosses over from normal to anomalous, and that this crossover can be characterized by a single dimensionless parameter. It is described how this crossover should be reflected in measurements of the complex impedance for Josephson junction arrays and superconducting films.
The ground and first excited state of two superconducting layers in interaction are studied considering two different coupling terms, one represented by the standard Josephson interaction, and one new, which is a superexchange pairing force between bilayer pairs. It is shown that a moderate-to strong Josephson interaction produces a low-lying collective state, pictured as an out-of-phase oscillation of the BCS gauge angles of the two layers. This antisymmetric angular oscillation might explain the 41 meV resonance observed in the neutron scattering experiments. The bilayer pairs are formed by …
We study the Josephson current through a long ferromagnetic bilayer in the diffusive regime. For non-collinear magnetizations, we find that the current-phase relation is dominated by its second harmonic, which corresponds to the long-range coherent propagation of two triplet pairs of electrons.
We study theoretically the dc Josephson tunnel current for a junction of two proximity S/F bilayers of a massive superconductor (S) / a thin ferromagnet (F) separated by an insulating (I) barrier. The dependence of the critical current on the relative orientation of the F layers magnetization is analyzed within the microscopic theory of the proximity effect for an S/F bilayer. We demonstrate that for the S/F-I-F/S contact critical current can reverse its sign (π-state of the junction) for the parallel orientation of the F layers magnetization, while for antiparallel alignment an enhancement of…
