Two holomorphic Hopf differentials for surfaces of non-null parallel mean curvature vector in S^2xS^2 and H^2xH^2 are constructed. A 1:1 correspondence between these surfaces and pairs of constant mean curvature surfaces of S^2xR and H^2xR is established. Using that, surfaces with vanishing Hopf differentials (in particular spheres with parallel mean curvature vector) are classified and a rigidity result for constant mean curvature surfaces of S^2xR and H^2xR is proved.
We present some results on the boundedness of the mean curvature of proper biharmonic submanifolds in spheres. A partial classification result for proper biharmonic submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector field in spheres is obtained. Then, we completely classify the proper biharmonic submanifolds in spheres with parallel mean curvature vector field and parallel Weingarten operator associated to the mean curvature vector field.
A submanifold of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold is said to have parallel mean curvature vector if the mean curvature vector field H is parallel as a section of the normal bundle. Submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector are important since they are critical points of some natural functionals. In this paper, we survey some classical and recent results on submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector. Special attention is paid to the classification of space-like and Lorentz surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector in Riemannian and indefinite space forms.
We prove that the Euclidean plane is the only Riemannian plane with total curvature and free of conjugate points that satisfies Playfair's version of the parallel postulate.
We provide a classification of Einstein submanifolds in space forms with flat normal bundle and parallel mean curvature. This extends a previous result due to Dajczer and Tojeiro for isometric immersions of Riemannian manifolds with constant sectional curvature.
We determine all helix surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector field, which are not minimal or pseudo-umbilical, in spaces of type $M^n(c)\times\mathbb{R}$, where $M^n(c)$ is a simply-connected $n$-dimensional manifold with constant sectional curvature $c$.
We prove a Simons type formula for submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector field in product spaces of type $M^n(c)\times\mathbb{R}$, where $M^n(c)$ is a space form with constant sectional curvature $c$, and then we use it to characterize some of these submanifolds.
Let (M,g) be a complete noncompact riemannian manifold with bounded geometry and parallel Ricci curvature. We show that some operators, "affine" relatively to the Ricci curvature, are locally invertible, in some classical Sobolev spaces, near the metric g.
We show that any left invariant metric with harmonic curvature on a solvable Lie group is Ricci-parallel. We show the same result for any Lie group of dimension $\leq$ 6.
We construct a special class of Lorentz surfaces in the pseudo-Euclidean 4-space with neutral metric which are one-parameter systems of meridians of rotational hypersurfaces with timelike or spacelike axis and call them meridian surfaces. We give the complete classification of the meridian surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector field. We also classify the meridian surfaces with parallel normalized mean curvature vector. We show that in the family of the meridian surfaces there exist Lorentz surfaces which have parallel normalized mean curvature vector field but not parallel mean curvatur…
We consider a quadratic form defined on the surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector of an any dimensional complex space form and prove that its $(2,0)$-part is holomorphic. When the complex dimension of the ambient space is equal to $2$ we define a second quadratic form with the same property and then determine those surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector on which the $(2,0)$-parts of both of them vanish. We also provide a reduction of codimension theorem and prove a non-existence result for $2$-spheres with parallel mean curvature vector.
We establish variational formulas for Ricci upper and lower bounds, as well as a derivative formula for the Ricci curvature. As applications, constant curvature manifolds, Einstein manifolds and Ricci parallel manifolds are identified, respectively, with different integral-differential formulas and semigroup inequalities. Moreover, by using derivative and Hessian formulas for the heat semigroup $P_t$ developed from stochastic analysis, explicit Hessian estimates are derived on Einstein and Ricci parallel manifolds.
We give criteria for which a principal curvature becomes a bounded $C^\infty$-function at non-degenerate singular points of wave fronts by using geometric invariants. As applications, we study singularities of parallel surfaces and extended distance squared functions of wave fronts. Moreover, we relate these singularities to some geometric invariants of fronts.
We find a Simons type formula for submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector (pmc submanifolds) in product spaces $M^n(c)\times\mathbb{R}$, where $M^n(c)$ is a space form with constant sectional curvature $c$, and then we use it to prove a gap theorem for the mean curvature of certain complete proper-biharmonic pmc submanifolds, and classify proper-biharmonic pmc surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^n(c)\times\mathbb{R}$.
We study the global geometry of surfaces in Sasakian space forms whose mean curvature vector is parallel in the normal bundle (these include the Riemannian Heisenberg space of dimension $2n+1$). We prove a codimension reduction theorem. We introduce two holomorphic quadratic differentials on anti-invariant such surfaces and use them to obtain classification theorems.
The purpose of this article is to determine explicitly the complete surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector, both in the complex projective plane and the complex hyperbolic plane. The main results are as follows: When the curvature of the ambient space is positive, there exists a unique such surface up to rigid motions of the target space. On the other hand, when the curvature of the ambient space is negative, there are `non-trivial' complete parallel mean curvature surfaces generated by Jacobi elliptic functions and they exhaust such surfaces.
We prove a Simons type equation for non-minimal surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector (pmc surfaces) in $M^3(c)\times\mathbb{R}$, where $M^3(c)$ is a 3-dimensional space form. Then, we use this equation in order to characterize certain complete non-minimal pmc surfaces.
We consider a general theory of curvatures of discrete surfaces equipped with edgewise parallel Gauss images, and where mean and Gaussian curvatures of faces are derived from the faces' areas and mixed areas. Remarkably these notions are capable of unifying notable previously defined classes of surfaces, such as discrete isothermic minimal surfaces and surfaces of constant mean curvature. We discuss various types of natural Gauss images, the existence of principal curvatures, constant curvature surfaces, Christoffel duality, Koenigs nets, contact element nets, s-isothermic nets, and interestin…
It is shown that a hypersurface of a space form is the initial data for a solution to the mean curvature flow by parallel hypersurfaces if, and only if, it is isoparametric. By solving an ordinary differential equation, explicit solutions are given for all isoparametric hypersurfaces of space forms. In particular, for such hypersurfaces of the sphere, the exact collapsing time into a focal submanifold is given in terms of its dimension, the principal curvatures and their multiplicities.
Given $H\in [0,\infty),$ some sufficient conditions for existence of CMC $H$ graphs with boundary in two parallel planes of $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ are presented. Height estimates for outwards-oriented CMC surfaces (horo)cyllindrically bounded are also exhibited.
We study surfaces with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field in Euclidean or Minkowski 4-space. On any such surface we introduce special isothermal parameters (canonical parameters) and describe these surfaces in terms of three invariant functions. We prove that any surface with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field parametrized by canonical parameters is determined uniquely up to a motion in Euclidean (or Minkowski) space by the three invariant functions satisfying a system of three partial differential equations. We find examples of surfaces with parallel normalized mean …
We generalize Llarull's scalar curvature comparison to Riemannian manifolds admitting metric connections with parallel and alternating torsion and having a nonnegative curvature operator on 2-vectors. As a byproduct, we show that Euler number and signature of such manifolds are determined by their global holonomy representation. Our result holds in particular for all quotients of compact Lie groups of equal rank, equipped with a normal homogeneous metric. We also correct a mistake in the treatment of odd-dimensional spaces in arXiv:math/0010199 and arXiv:0705.0500
We survey different classification results for surfaces with parallel mean curvature immersed into some Riemannian homogeneous four-manifolds, including real and complex space forms, and product spaces. We provide a common framework for this problem, with special attention to the existence of holomorphic quadratic differentials on such surfaces. The case of spheres with parallel mean curvature is also explained in detail, as well as the state-of-the-art advances in the general problem.
We prove a Simons type equation for non-minimal surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector (pmc surfaces) in $M^n(c)\times\mathbb{R}$, where $M^n(c)$ is an $n$-dimensional space form. Then, we use this equation in order to characterize complete non-minimal pmc surfaces with non-negative Gaussian curvature.
We give a condition under which the findings of the paper cited above work well and determine the surfaces that were not considered before. In this paper, we show that a parallel mean curvature surface of a general type in a complex two-dimensional complex space form depends on one real-valued harmonic function on the surface and five real constants if the ambient space is not flat, the mean curvature vector does not vanish, and the Kaehler angle is not constant.
A decomposition theorem is established for a class of closed Riemannian submanifolds immersed in a space form of constant sectional curvature. In particular, it is shown that if $M$ has nonnegative sectional curvature and admits a Codazzi tensor with "parallel mean curvature", then $M$ is locally isometric to a direct product of irreducible factors determined by the spectrum of that tensor. This decomposition is global when $M$ is simply connected, and generalizes what is known for immersed submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector.
We consider spacelike graphs $Γ_f$ of simple products $(M\times N, g\times -h)$ where $(M,g)$ and $(N,h)$ are Riemannian manifolds and $f:M\to N$ is a smooth map. Under the condition of the Cheeger constant of $M$ to be zero and some condition on the second fundamental form at infinity, we conclude that if $Γ_f \subset M\times N$ has parallel mean curvature $H$ then $H=0$. This holds trivially if $M$ is closed. If $M$ is the $m$-hyperbolic space then for any constant $c$, we describe a explicit foliation of $H^m\times R$ by hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature $c$.
Let $M$ be an $n(\geq3)$-dimensional oriented compact submanifold with parallel mean curvature in the simply connected space form $F^{n+p}(c)$ with $c+H^2>0$, where $H$ is the mean curvature of $M$. We prove that if the Ricci curvature of $M$ satisfies $Ric_{M}\geq(n-2)(c+H^2),$ then $M$ is either a totally umbilic sphere, the Clifford hypersurface $S^{m}\big(\frac{1}{\sqrt{2(c+H^2)}}\big)\times S^{m}\big(\frac{1}{\sqrt{2(c+H^2)}}\big)$ in $S^{n+1}(\frac{1}{\sqrt{c+H^2}})$ with $n=2m$, or $\mathbb{C}P^{2}(4/3(c+H^2))$ in $S^7(\frac{1}{\sqrt{c+H^2}})$. In particular, if $Ric_{M}>(n-2)(c+H^2),$ …
In this paper we obtain a splitting theorem for the symmetric diffusion operator $Δ_ϕ=Δ-\left<\nablaϕ,\nabla \right>$ and a non-constant $C^3$ function $f$ in a complete Riemannian manifold $M$, under the assumptions that the Ricci curvature associated with $Δ_ϕ$ satisfies ${\rm Ric}_ϕ(\nabla f,\nabla f)\ge 0$, that $|\nabla f|$ attains a maximum at $M$ and that $Δ_ϕ$ is non-decreasing along the orbits of $\nabla f$. The proof uses the general fact that a complete manifold $M$ with a non-constant smooth function $f$ with parallel gradient vector field must be a Riemannian product $M=N\times \m…
We investigate the local geometry of a class of Kähler submanifolds $M \subset \R^n$ which generalize surfaces of constant mean curvature. The role of the mean curvature vector is played by the $(1,1)$-part (i.e. the $dz_id\bar z_j$-components) of the second fundamental form $α$, which we call the pluri-mean curvature. We show that these Kähler submanifolds are characterized by the existence of an associated family of isometric submanifolds with rotated second fundamental form. Of particular interest is the isotropic case where this associated family is trivial. We also investigate the propert…
We construct metrics of positive Ricci curvature on some vector bundles over tori (or more generally, over nilmanifolds). This gives rise to the first examples of manifolds with positive Ricci curvature which are homotopy equivalent but not homeomorphic to manifolds of nonnegative sectional curvature.
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact riemannian manifold without boundary., with parallel Rici curvature. We show that some operators, affine relatively to the Ricci curvature, are locally invertible, near the metric $g$
We present an explicit formula for the mean curvature of a unit vector field on a Riemannian manifold, using a special but natural frame. As applications, we treat some known and new examples of minimal unit vector fields. We also give an example of a vector field of constant mean curvature on the Lobachevsky $(n+1)$ space.
We show that any $k$ Osserman Lorentzian algebraic curvature tensor has constant sectional curvature and give an elementary proof that any local 2 point homogeneous Lorentzian manifold has constant sectional curvature. We also show that a Szabó Lorentzian covariant derivative algebraic curvature tensor vanishes.
A connected Riemannian manifold M has constant vector curvature ε, denoted by cvc(ε), if every tangent vector v in TM lies in a 2-plane with sectional curvature ε. By scaling the metric on M, we can always assume that ε= -1, 0, or 1. When the sectional curvatures satisfy the additional bound that each sectional curvature is less than or equal to ε, or that each sectional curvature is greater than or equal to ε, we say that, ε, is an extremal curvature. In this paper we study three-manifolds with constant vector curvature. Our main results show that finite volume cvc(ε) three-manifolds with ext…
We obtain the explicit representation of Legendre surfaces in the unit $5$-sphere with harmonic mean curvature vector field, under the condition that the mean curvature function is constant along a certain special direction.
We obtain several rigidity results for biharmonic submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field. We classify biharmonic submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field and with at most two distinct principal curvatures. In particular, we determine all biharmonic surfaces with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field in $\mathbb{S}^n$. Then we investigate, for (not necessarily compact) proper biharmonic submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^n$, their type in the sense of B-Y. Chen. We prove: (i) a proper biharmonic subma…
This paper addresses Cheeger and Gromoll's question of which vector bundles admit a complete metric of nonnegative curvature, and relates their question to the issue of which sphere bundles admit a metric of positive curvature. We show that any vector bundle which admits a metric of nonnegative curvature must admit a connection, a tensor, and a metric on the base space which together satisfy a certain differential inequality. On the other hand, a slight sharpening of this condition is sufficient for the associated sphere bundle to admit a metric of positive curvature. Our results sharpen and g…
We prove that a H-surface M in H^2xR, |H| <= 1/2, inherits the symmetries of its boundary when the boundary is either a horizontal curve with curvature greater than one or two parallel horizontal curves with curvature greater than one, whose distance is greater or equal to πFurthermore we prove that the asymptotic boundary of a surface with mean curvature bounded away from zero consists of parts of straight lines, provided it is sufficiently regular
The aim of this paper is to introduce a notion of mean curvature flow soliton general enough to encompass target spaces of constant sectional curvature, Riemannian products or, in increasing generality, warped product spaces.
We develop an invariant local theory of Lorentz surfaces in pseudo-Euclidean 4-space by use of a linear map of Weingarten type. We find a geometrically determined moving frame field at each point of the surface and obtain a system of geometric functions. We prove a fundamental existence and uniqueness theorem in terms of these functions. On any Lorentz surface with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field we introduce special geometric (canonical) parameters and prove that any such surface is determined up to a rigid motion by three invariant functions satisfying three natural partial d…
