In the present paper, we study timelike surfaces with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field in the four-dimensional Minkowski space. We introduce special isotropic parameters on each such surface, which we call canonical parameters, and prove a fundamental existence and uniqueness theorem stating that each timelike surface with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field is determined up to a rigid motion in the Minkowski space by three geometric functions satisfying a system of three partial differential equations. In this way we minimize the number of functions and the number of partial differential equations determining the surface, thus solving the Lund-Regge problem for this class of surfaces.
We give a definition of generalized timelike Mannheim curve in Minkowski space-time $E_1^4$. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the generalized timelike Mannheim curve obtain. We show some characterizations of generalized Mannheim curve.
Using techniques of integrable systems, we study a Weierstrass representation formula for timelike surfaces with prescribed mean curvature in Minkowski 3-space. It is shown that timelike minimal surfaces are obtained by integrating a pair of Lorentz holomorphic and Lorentz antiholomorphic null curves in Minkowski 3-space. The relationship between timelike minimal surfaces and bosonic Nambu-Goto string worldsheets in spacetime is also discussed in the appendix.
In this paper, we study the timelike tubular Weingarten surfaces in 3-dimensional Minkowski space $IR_1^3 $.We have obtained some conditions for being $({K_{II},H})$, $({K_{II},K})$, timelike tubular Weingarten surfaces where are the second Gaussian curvature the Gaussian curvature and the mean curvature, respectively.
We consider the timelike minimal surface problem in Minkowski spacetimes and show local and global existence of such surfaces having arbitrary dimension $\geq 2$ and arbitrary co-dimension, provided they are initially close to a flat plane.
We introduce a new approach to the study of timelike minimal surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space through a split-complex representation formula for this kind of surface. As applications, we solve the Björling problem for timelike surfaces and obtain interesting examples and related results. Using the Björling representation, we also obtain characterizations of minimal timelike surfaces of revolution as well as of minimal ruled timelike surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowsi space.
Isophote comprises a locus of the surface points whose normal vectors make a constant angle with a fixed vector. In this paper, isophote curves are studied on timelike surfaces in Minkowski 3-space E31. The axises of spacelike and timelike isophote curves are found via their Darboux frames. Subsequently, the relationship between isophotes and slant helices is shown on timelike surfaces.
In this paper, we examine timelike loxodromes on three kinds of Lorentzian helicoidal surfaces in Minkowski $n$--space. First, we obtain the first order ordinary differential equations which determine timelike loxodromes on the Lorentzian helicoidal surfaces in $\mathbb{E}^n_1$ according to the causal characters of their meridian curves. Then, by finding general solutions, we get the explicit parametrizations of such timelike loxodromes. In particular, we investigate the timelike loxodromes on the three kinds of Lorentzian right helicoidal surfaces in $\mathbb{E}^n_1$. Finally, we give an exam…
The aim of this paper is to present a new perspective on the generation of developable trajectory ruled surfaces in Minkowski 3-space. Involute trajectory ruled surfaces generated by the Frenet trihedron, moving along spacelike involutes of a given timelike space curve, is stated according to Lorentzian timelike angle between tangent vector and unit vector of direction Darboux vector of this timelike space curve. Also some new results and theorems related to the developability of the involute trajectory timelike ruled surfaces are obtained. Finally we illustrate these surfaces by presenting on…
Bour's minimal surface has remarkable properties in three dimensional Minkowski space. We reveal the definite and indefinite cases of the Bour's surface using Weierstrass representations, and give some differential geometric properties of the astonishing maximal and minimal surfaces.
We prove that an isometric immersion of a timelike surface in four-dimensional Minkowski space is equivalent to a normalized spinor field which is a solution of a Dirac equation on the surface. Using the quaternions and the complex numbers, we obtain a spinor representation formula that relates the spinor field and the isometric immersion. Applying the representation formula, we deduce a new spinor representation of a timelike surface in three-dimensional De Sitter space; we give a formula for the Laplacian of the Gauss map of a minimal timelike surface in four-dimensional Minkowski space in t…
In this study we give definitions and characterizations of transversal surfaces of timelike ruled surfaces. We study some special cases such as the striction curve is a geodesic, an asymptotic line or a line of curvature. Moreover, we obtain developable conditions for transversal surfaces of a timelike ruled surface.
This paper deals with the natural lift curves and the geodesic sprays for the spherical indicatrices of the timelike-spacelike Bertrand couple on the tangent bundle or in Minkowski 3-space and then give some new characterizations for these curves. Additionally we illustrate an example of our main results.
We consider a unit speed timelike curve $α$ in Minkowski 4-space $E_1^4$ and denote the Frenet frame of $α$ by $\{T,N,B_1,B_2\}$. We say that $α$ is a generalized helix if one of the unit vector fields of the Frenet frame has constant scalar product with a fixed direction $U$ of $E_1^4$. In this work we study those helices where the function $<B_2,U>$ is constant and we give different characterizations of such curves.
Given a constant vector field $Z$ in Minkowski space, a timelike surface is said to have a canonical null direction with respect to $Z$ if the projection of $Z$ on the tangent space of the surface gives a lightlike vector field. In this paper we describe these surfaces in the ruled case. For example when the Minkowski space has three dimensions then a surface with a canonical null direction is minimal and flat. On the other hand, we describe several properties in the non ruled case and we partially describe these surfaces in four-dimensional Minkowski space. We give different ways for building…

In this paper, we consider non developable ruled surface with spacelike ruling, timelike ruling, respectively. We give the relations between the structure functions with the curvature and torsion of the striction line of the timelike and spacelike non developable ruled surfaces. Also, we have calculated the gaussian and mean curvatures of timelike and spacelike non developable ruled surfaces using the structure functions.
The aim of this paper is to determine criteria of being integral curve for the geodesic spray of the natural lift curves of the spherical indicatrices of the involutes of a given spacelike curve with a timelike binormal in Minkowski 3-space. Furthermore, some interesting results about the spacelike evolute curve with timelike binormal and spacelike or timelike Darboux vector were obtained, depending on the assumption that the natural lift curves of the spherical indicatrices of the involute curve should be the integral curve on the tangent bundle. Additionally we illustrate an example of our m…
On any timelike surface with zero mean curvature in the four-dimensional Minkowski space we introduce special geometric (canonical) parameters and prove that the Gauss curvature and the normal curvature of the surface satisfy a system of two natural partial differential equations. Conversely, any two solutions to this system determine a unique (up to a motion) timelike surface with zero mean curvature so that the given parameters are canonical. We find all timelike surfaces with zero mean curvature in the class of rotational surfaces of Moore type. These examples give rise to a one-parameter f…
In this paper, we will give an Enneper-type representation for spacelike and timelike minimal surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space $L^{3}$, using the complex and the paracomplex analysis (respectively). Then, we exhibit various examples of minimal surfaces in $L^{3}$ constructed via the Enneper representation formula, that it is equivalent to the Weierstrass representation obtained by Kobayashi (for spacelike immersions) and by Konderak (for the timelike ones).
In this paper, we get the time evolution equations of the curvature and torsion of the evolving spacelike curves in the Minkowski space. Also, we give inextensible evolutions of timelike ruled surfaces that are produced by the timelike normal and spacelike binormal vector fields of spacelike curve and derive the necessary conditions for an inelastic surface evolution. Then, we compute the coefficients of the first and second fundamental forms, the Gauss and mean curvatures for timelike special ruled surfaces. As a result, we give applications of the evolution equations for the curvatures of th…
In the 3-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space we prove that the sign of the Gaussian curvature of any timelike minimal surface is determined by the degeneracy and the orientations of the two null curves that generate the surface. Moreover, we also investigate the behavior of the Gaussian curvature near singular points of a timelike minimal surface which admits some kind of singular points.
We study surfaces with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field in Euclidean or Minkowski 4-space. On any such surface we introduce special isothermal parameters (canonical parameters) and describe these surfaces in terms of three invariant functions. We prove that any surface with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field parametrized by canonical parameters is determined uniquely up to a motion in Euclidean (or Minkowski) space by the three invariant functions satisfying a system of three partial differential equations. We find examples of surfaces with parallel normalized mean …
A spacelike surface in Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}_1^3$ is called a $K^α$-translator of the flow by the powers of Gauss curvature if satisfies $K^α= \langle N,\vec{v}\rangle$, $α\neq 0$, where $K$ is the Gauss curvature, $N$ is the unit normal vector field and $\vec{v}$ is a direction of $\mathbb{R}_1^3$. In this paper, we classify all rotational $K^α$-translators. This classification will depend on the causal character of the rotation axis. Although the theory of the $K^α$-flow holds for spacelike surfaces, the equation describing $K^α$-translators is still valid for timelike surfaces. So we …
A world sheet in Lorentz-Minkowski space is a timelike submanifold consisting of a one-parameter family of spacelike submanifolds in Lorentz-Minkowski space. In this paper we investigate differential geometry of world sheets in Lorentz-Minkowski space as an application of the theory of big wave fronts.
In this paper, we establish equiform differential geometry of space and timelike curves in 4-dimensional Minkowski space. We obtain some conditions for these curves. Also, general helices with respect to their equiform curvatures are characterized.
In this study, we investigate the existence theorems for timelike ruled surfaces in Minkowski 3-space. We obtain a general system and give the existence theorems for a timelike ruled surface according to Gaussian curvature, distribution parameter and strictional distance. Moreover, we give some special cases such as the directirx of the surface is a geodesic, an asymptotic line, a line of curvature or a general helix.
In 3-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space we determine the number of catenoids connecting two coaxial circles in parallel planes. This study is separated according to the types of circles and the causal character (spacelike and timelike) of the catenoid.
In this paper, we study fully nonlinear curvature flows of noncompact spacelike hypersurfaces in Minkowski space. We prove that if the initial hypersurface satisfies certain conditions, then the flow exists for all time. Moreover, we show that after rescaling the flow converges to the future timelike hyperboloid, which is a self-expander.
This paper demonstrates existence for all time of mean curvature flow in Minkowski space with a perpendicular Neumann boundary condition, where the boundary manifold is a convex cone and the flowing manifold is initially spacelike. Using a blowdown argument, we show that under renormalisation this flow converges towards a homothetically expanding hyperbolic solution.
We prove that if $ϕ\colon \mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R}^{1+2}$ is a smooth proper timelike immersion with vanishing mean curvature, then necessarily $ϕ$ is an embedding, and every compact subset of $ϕ(\mathbb{R}^2)$ is a smooth graph. It follows that if one evolves any smooth self-intersecting spacelike curve (or any planar spacelike curve whose unit tangent vector spans a closed semi-circle) so as to trace a timelike surface of vanishing mean curvature in $\mathbb{R}^{1+2}$, then the evolving surface will either fail to remain timelike, or it will fail to remain smooth. We show that, even allow…
For a regular surface in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$, umbilic points are precisely the points where the Gauss and mean curvatures $K$ and $H$ satisfy $H^2=K$; moreover, it is well-known that the only totally umbilic surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are planes and spheres. But for timelike surfaces in Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{1,2}$, it is possible to have $H^2=K$ at a non-umbilic point; we call such points {\em quasi-umbilic}, and we give a complete classification of totally quasi-umbilic timelike surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{1,2}$.
In this paper, we express surfaces parametrically through a given spacelike (timelike) asymptotic curve using the Frenet frame of the curve in Minkowski 3-space. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the coefficients of the Frenet frame to satisfy both parametric and asymptotic requirements are derived. We also present some interesting examples to show the validity of this study.
Isophote curve consists of a locus of surface points whose normal vectors make a constant angle with a fixed vector (the axis). In this paper, we define an isophote curve on a spacelike surface in Lorentz-Minkowski space and then find its axis as timelike and spacelike vectors via the Darboux frame. Besides, we give some characterizations concerning isophote curve and its axis.
We show that to every maximal surface with conelike singularities in Lorentz-Minkowski space $\mathbb{L}^3$ that can be locally represented as the graph of a smooth function, there exists a corresponding timelike minimal surface in $\mathbb{L}^3$. There exists a linear transformation between such a maximal surface and its corresponding timelike minimal surface and it maps the singularities of one to the singularities of the other. Moreover, this transformation establishes a one-one correspondence between such maximal surfaces and timelike minimal surfaces and also preserves the one-one propert…
The 2-parameter family of certain homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds which includes Minkowski 3-space, de Sitter 3-space, and Minkowski motion group is considered. Each homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifold in the 2-parameter family has a solvable Lie group structure with left invariant metric. A generalized integral representation formula which is the unificaton of representation formulas for minimal timelike surfaces in those homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds is obtained. The normal Gauß map of minimal timelike surfaces in those homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds and its harmonicity are discuss…
We use integrable systems techniques to study the singularities of timelike non-minimal constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space. The singularities arise at the boundary of the Birkhoff big cell of the loop group involved. We examine the behaviour of the surfaces at the big cell boundary, generalize the definition of CMC surfaces to include those with finite, generic singularities, and show how to construct surfaces with prescribed singularities by solving a singular geometric Cauchy problem. The solution shows that the generic singularities of the generalized su…
In the Minkowski space-time, a world hyper-sheet is a timelike hypersurface consisting of a one-parameter family of spacelike submanifolds. Recently, Bousso and Randall introduced the notion of caustics of world hyper-sheets in order to define the notion of holographic domains in space-time. Here, we give a mathematical framework for describing the caustics of world hyper-sheets in the Minkowski space-time. As a consequence, we investigate the singularities of the caustics of world hyper-sheets and whose geometrical meanings. Although the Minkowski space-time has zero gravity, this framework g…
In this work, we study spacelike and timelike surfaces of revolution in Minkowski space $\e_{1}^{3}$ that satisfy $aH+bK=c$, where $H$ and $K$ denote the mean curvature and the Gauss curvature of the surface and $a$, $b$ and $c$ are constants. The classification depends on the causal character of the axis of revolution and in all the cases, we obtain a first integral of the equation of the generating curve of the surface.
In this paper, we analyze the problem of constructing a surface pencil from a given spacelike (timelike) line of curvature. By using the Frenet frame of the given curve in Minkowski 3-space, we express the surface pencil as a linear combination of this frame and derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the coefficients to satisfy the line of curvature requirement. To illustrate the method some examples showing members of the surface pencil with their line of curvature are given.
A constant angle surface in Minkowski space is a spacelike surface whose unit normal vector field makes a constant hyperbolic angle with a fixed timelike vector. In this work we study and classify these surfaces. In particular, we show that they are flat. Next we prove that a tangent developable surface (resp. cylinder, cone) is a constant angle surface if and only if the generating curve is a helix (resp. a straight-line, a circle).
Riemann zero mean curvature examples in the Lorentz-Minkowski space are surfaces with zero mean curvature foliated by circles contained in parallel planes. In contrast to the Euclidean case, this family of surfaces presents new and rich features because of the variety of types of circles. In this paper, we give a geometric description of these examples when the circles are contained in spacelike planes and timelike planes.
We study the class of spacelike surfaces in the four-dimensional Minkowski space whose mean curvature vector at any point is a non-zero spacelike vector or timelike vector. These surfaces are determined up to a motion by eight invariant functions satisfying some natural conditions. The subclass of Chen surfaces is characterized by the condition one of these invariants to be zero. In the present paper we describe all Chen spacelike rotational surfaces of hyperbolic or elliptic type.
It is shown that timelike surfaces of constant mean curvature 1 in anti-de Sitter 3-space can be constructed from a pair of Lorentz holomorphic and Lorentz antiholomorphic null curves in PSL(2,R) via Bryant type representation formulae. These formulae are used to investigate an explicit one-to-one correspondence, the so-called Lawson correspondence, between timelike surfaces of constant mean curvature 1 in anti-de Sitter 3-space and timelike minimal surfaces in Minkowski 3-space. The hyperbolic Gauss map of timelike surfaces in anti-de Sitter 3-space, which is a close analogue of the classical…
In this study, we consider the notion of similar ruled surface for timelike and spacelike ruled surfaces in Minkowski 3-space. We obtain some properties of these special surfaces in E_1^3 and we show that developable ruled surfaces in E_1^3 form a family of similar ruled surfaces if and only if the striction curves of the surfaces are similar curves with variable transformation. Moreover, we obtain that cylindrical surfaces and conoids form two families of similar ruled surfaces in E_1^3.
A connected regular surface in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space is called a mixed type surface if the spacelike, timelike and lightlike point sets are all non-empty. Lightlike points on mixed type surfaces may be regarded as singular points of the induced metrics. In this paper, we introduce the L-Gauss map around non-degenerate lightlike points, and show the fundamental theorem of surface theory for mixed type surfaces at non-degenerate lightlike points. As an application, we prove that a real analytic mixed type surface admits non-trivial isometric deformations around generic lightlike points.
In this article we consider the motion of relativistic strings in the Minkowski space $\textbf{R}^{1+n}$. Those surfaces are known as a timelike minimal surface, and described by a system with $n$ nonlinear wave equations of Born-Infeld type. By constructing a suitable Nash-Moser iteration scheme, we prove that the $n$-dimensional relativistic strings can admit a more generalized time quasi-periodic motion in $\textbf{R}^{1+n}$. Moreover, those time quasi-periodic solutions are also timelike solutions.
