Epitaxial graphene films have been formed on the C-face of semi-insulating 4H-SiC substrates by a high temperature sublimation process. Nano-scale square antidot arrays have been fabricated on these graphene films. At low temperatures, magneto-conductance in these films exhibits pronounced Aharonov-Bohm oscillations with the period corresponding to magnetic flux quanta added to the area of a single antidot. At low fields, weak localization is observed and its visibility is enhanced by intravalley scattering on antidot edges. At high fields, we observe two distinctive minima in magnetoconductance which can be attributed to commensurability oscillations between classical cyclotron orbits and antidot array. All mesoscopic features, surviving up to 70 K, reveal the unique electronic properties of graphene.
We have calculated the linear conductance associated with tunneling of individual quasiparticles of primary quantum Hall liquids with filling factors $ν=1/(2m+1)$ through a system of two antidots in series. On-site Coulomb interaction simulates the Fermi exclusion and makes the quasiparticle dynamics similar to that of tunneling electrons. The liquid edges serve as the quasiparticle reservoirs, and also create the dissipation mechanism for tunneling between the antidots. In the regime of strong dissipation, the conductance should exhibit resonant peaks of unusual form and a width proportional …
Electron-electron interactions are responsible for a correction to the conductance of a diffusive metal, the "Altshuler-Aronov correction" $δG_{AA}$. Here we study the counterpart of this correction for a ballistic conductor, in which the electron motion is governed by chaotic classical dynamics. In the ballistic conductance, the Ehrenfest time $τ_{E}$ enters as an additional time scale that determines the magnitude of quantum interference effects. The Ehrenfest time effectively poses a short-time threshold for the trajectories contributing to the interaction correction. As a consequence, $δG_…
Classical transport properties of an electron, moving in plain, in an array of magnetic antidot has been calculated. The homogeneous magnetic field in z-direction fills the whole space except of cylinders of radius r_0. The magnetoresistance shows additional peak and minimum according to pinned orbits at antidots and to propagating orbits in transport direction, respectively.
In the present work we have investigated the transport properties in a number of Si/SiGe samples with square antidot lattices of different periods. In samples with lattice periods equal to 700 nm and 850 nm we have observed the conventional low-field commensurability magnetoresistance peaks consistent with the previous observations in GaAs/AlGaAs and Si/SiGe samples with antidot lattices. In samples with a 600 nm lattice period a new series of well-developed magnetoresistance oscillations has been found beyond the last commensurability peak which are supposed to originate from periodic skippin…
The topic of this contribution is the investigation of quantum states and quantum Hall effect in electron gas subjected to a periodic potential of the lateral lattice. The potential is formed by triangular quantum antidos located on the sites of the square lattice. In a such system the inversion center and the four-fold rotation symmetry are absent. The topological invariants which characterize different magnetic subbands and their Hall conductances are calculated. It is shown that the details of the antidot geometry are crucial for the Hall conductance quantization rule. The critical values o…
Scanning gate microscopy of quantum point contacts (QPC) in the integer quantum Hall regime is considered in terms of the scattering wave functions with a finite-difference implementation of the quantum transmitting boundary approach. Conductance ($G$) maps for a clean QPC as well as for a system including an antidot within the constriction are evaluated. The step-like locally flat $G$ maps for clean QPCs turn into circular resonances that are reentrant in external magnetic field when the antidot is introduced to the constriction. The current circulation around the antidot and the spacing of t…
An experimental method for detection of bound states around an antidot formed from a hole in a graphene sheet is proposed by measuring the ballistic two terminal conductances. In particularly, we consider the effect of bound states formed by magnetic field on the two terminal conductance and show that one can observe Breit-Wigner like resonances in the conductance as a function of the Fermi level close to the energies of the bound states. In addition, we develop a new numerical method in which the computational effort is proportional to the linear dimensions, instead of the area of the scatter…
Magnetic fields are often used for characterizing transport in nanoscale materials. Recent magnetotransport experiments have demonstrated that ballistic transport is possible in graphene antidot lattices (GALs). These experiments have inspired the present theoretical study of GALs in a perpendicular magnetic field. We calculate magnetotransport through graphene antidot barriers (GABs), which are finite rows of antidots arranged periodically in a pristine graphene sheet, using a tight-binding model and the Landauer-Büttiker formula. We show that GABs behave as ideal Dirac mass barriers for anti…
Abnormal magnetoresistance behavior is found in superconducting Nb films perforated with rectangular arrays of antidots (holes). Generally magnetoresistance were always found to increase with increasing magnetic field. Here we observed a reversal of this behavior for particular in low temperature or current density. This phenomenon is due to a strong 'caging effect' which interstitial vortices are strongly trapped among pinned multivortices.
We have investigated spin-related effects on the electronic transport in a single antidot system in the vicinity of the $ν= 2$ quantum Hall state where two edge states with different spins of the lowest Landau level are formed around the antidot. The conductance exhibits the paired $h/2e$ Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations. Using a tilted magnetic field technique, we have observed the evolution of the oscillations with the total magnetic field and a concomitant change in the source-drain bias dependence of the differential conductance. From the observation, we extract the effect of the Zeeman ene…
We present a microscopic picture of quantum transport in quantum antidots in the quantum Hall regime taking electron interactions into account. We discuss the edge state structure, energy level evolution, charge quantization and linear-response conductance as the magnetic field or gate voltage is varied. Particular attention is given to the conductance oscillations due to Aharonov-Bohm interference and their unexpected periodicity. To explain the latter we propose the mechanisms of scattering by point defects and Coulomb blockade tunneling. They are supported by self-consistent calculations in…
The effect of microwave radiation on low-temperature electron magnetotransport in a square antidot lattice with a period of d = 0.8 micrometer based on a GaAs quantum well with two occupied energy subbands E1 and E2 is investigated. It is shown that, owing to a significant difference between the electron densities in the subbands, commensurability oscillations of the resistance in the investigated antidot lattice are observed only for the first subband. It is found that microwave irradiation under the cyclotron resonance condition results in the formation of resistance oscillations periodic in…
We present far-infrared (FIR) photo-conductivity measurements for a two-dimensional electron gas in an array of nano-structured antidots. We detect, resistively and spectrally resolved, both the magnetoplasmon and the edge-magnetoplasmon modes. Temperature-dependent measurements demonstrates that both modes contribute to the photo resistance by heating the electron gas via resonant absorption of the FIR radiation. Influences of spin effect and phonon bands on the collective excitations in the antidot lattice are observed.
The magnetooptic and magnetic properties of hexagonal arrays of holes in optically thin iron films are presented. We analyze their dependence on the hole radius and compare the results to a continuous iron film of same thickness. We observe a large enhancement of the magnetooptic Kerr rotation with respect to that of the continuous film, at frequecies where surface plasmons excitations are expected. Additional simulations are in very good agreement with the experiment and thus confirm the effect of the surface plasmons on the Kerr rotation. The altering of the magnetic properties by the hole a…
We consider charge transport across a finite graphene flake with a circular antidot defined in its center. The flake is connected to thin metallic armchair nanoribbons and the study covers the energy range within the neighborhood of the neutrality point. We solve the scattering problem using the tight-binding Hamiltonian and find that conductance of the system is non-zero only near narrow resonances which are quasi-bound in either the entire cavity or the antidot itself. We demonstrate that the scanning probe technique can be used for the purpose of determination whether the state is localized…
The microwave (MW) photoresistance has been measured on a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas patterned with a shallow triangular antidot lattice, where both the MW-induced resistance oscillations (MIRO) and magnetoplasmon (MP) resonance are observed superposing on sharp commensurate geometrical resonance (GR). Analysis shows that the MIRO, MP, and GR are decoupled from each other in these experiments.
The ability to localize and manipulate individual quasiparticles in mesoscopic structures is critical in experimental studies of quantum mechanics and thermodynamics, and in potential quantum information devices, e.g., for topological schemes of quantum computation. In strong magnetic field, the quantum Hall edge modes can be confined around the circumference of a small antidot, forming discrete energy levels that have a unique ability to localize fractionally charged quasiparticles. Here, we demonstrate a Dirac fermion quantum Hall antidot in graphene in the integer quantum Hall regime, where…
We exploit the biased tip of a scanning gate microscope (SGM) to induce a controlled backscattering between counter-propagating edge channels in a wide constriction in the quantum Hall regime. We compare our detailed conductance maps with a numerical percolation model and demonstrate that conductance fluctuations observed in these devices as a function of the gate voltage originate from backscattering events mediated by localized states pinned by potential fluctuations. Our imaging technique allows us to identify the necessary conditions for the activation of these backscattering processes and…
Commensurability oscillations in the magnetotransport of periodically patterned systems, emerging from the interplay of cyclotron orbit and the pattern periodicity, are a benchmark of mesoscopic physics in electron gas systems. Exploiting similar effects in 2D materials would allow exceptional control of electron behaviour, but is hindered by the requirement to maintain ballistic transport over large length scales. Recent experiments have overcome this obstacle and observed distinct magnetoresistance commensurability peaks for perforated graphene sheets (antidot lattices). Interpreting the exa…
We fabricated and measured antidot lattices in single layer graphene with lattice periods down to 90 nm. In large-period lattices, a well-defined quantum Hall effect is observed. Going to smaller antidot spacings the quantum Hall effect gradually disappears, following a geometric size effect. Lattices with narrow constrictions between the antidots behave as networks of nanoribbons, showing a high-resistance state and a transport gap of a few mV around the Dirac point. We observe pronounced weak localization in the magnetoresistance, indicating strong intervalley scattering at the antidot edges…
Antidot lattices were fabricated by atomic force lithography using local oxidation. High quality finite 20 x20 lattices are demonstrated with periods of 300 nm. The low temperature magnetoresistance shows well developed commensurability oscillations as well as a quenching of the Hall effect around zero magnetic field. In addition, we find B periodic oscillations superimposed on the classical commensurability peaks at temperatures as high as 1.7 K. These observations indicate the high electronic quality of our samples.
Resistance fluctuation phenomenon in antidot lattices in the quantum Hall regime are studied. Magnetoresistance of finite antidot array systems in the quantum Hall plateau transition regime exhibits two types of oscillatory effect. One is the aperiodic resistance fluctuations (RFs) and the other is the Aharonov-Bohm (AB)-type oscillations. Their dependences on the magnetic field and the gate voltage are quite distinct. While the aperiodic RFs are attributed to the complex evolution of the conducting network of compressible channels, the AB-type oscillations are interpreted in terms of edge sta…
Ballistic transport was studied in a multiple-band system consisting of an antidot lattice of AB-stacked trilayer graphene. The low temperature magnetoresistance showed commensurability peaks arising from matching of the antidot lattice period and radius of cyclotron orbits for each mono- and bilayer-like band in AB stacked trilayer graphene. The commensurability peak of the monolayer-like band appeared at a lower magnetic field than that of the bilayer-like band, which reflects the fact that the Fermi surface of the bilayer-like band is larger than that of monolayer-like band. Rotation of the…
We investigated the magnetotransport properties of high-mobility InAs/GaSb antidot lattices. In addition to the usual commensurability features at low magnetic field we found a broad maximum of classical origin around 2.5 T. The latter can be ascribed to a class of rosetta type orbits encircling a single antidot. This is shown by both a simple transport calculation based on a classical Kubo formula and an analysis of the Poincare surface of section at different magnetic field values. At low temperatures we observe weak 1/B-periodic oscillations superimposed on the classical maximum.
We study theoretically the magnetoresistance $ρ_{xx}(B)$ of a two-dimensional electron gas scattered by a random ensemble of impenetrable discs in the presence of a long-range correlated random potential. We believe that this model describes a high-mobility semiconductor heterostructure with a random array of antidots. We show that the interplay of scattering by the two types of disorder generates new behavior of $ρ_{xx}(B)$ which is absent for only one kind of disorder. We demonstrate that even a weak long-range disorder becomes important with increasing $B$. In particular, although $ρ_{xx}(B…

Hybrid lateral superlattices composed of a square array of antidots and a periodic one-dimensional magnetic modulation are prepared in $\mathrm{Ga[Al]As}$ heterostructures. The two-dimensional electron gases exposed to these superlattices are characterized by magnetotransport experiments in vanishing average perpendicular magnetic fields. Despite the absence of closed orbits, the diagonal magnetoresistivity in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic modulation shows pronounced classical resonances. They are located at magnetic fields where snake trajectories exist which are quasi-commensur…
Recently, a logarithmic decrease of conductivity has been observed in topological insulators at low temperatures, implying a tendency of localization of surface electrons. Here, we report quantum transport experiments on the topological insulator Bi2Te3 thin films with arrayed antidot nanostructures. With increasing density of the antidots, a systematic decrease is observed in the slope of the logarithmic temperature-dependent conductivity curves, indicating the electron-electron interaction can be tuned by the antidots. Meanwhile, the weak anti-localization effect revealed in magnetoconductiv…
We measure the high magnetic field ($B$) microwave conductivity, Re$σ_{xx}$, of a high mobility 2D electron system containing an antidot array. Re$σ_{xx}$ vs frequency ($f$) increases strongly in the regime of the fractional quantum Hall effect series, with Landau filling $1/3<ν<2/3$. At microwave $f$, Re$σ_{xx}$ vs $B$ exhibits a broad peak centered around $ν=1/2$. On the peak, the 10 GHz Re$σ_{xx}$ can exceed its dc-limit value by a factor of 5. This enhanced microwave conductivity is unobservable for temperature $T \gtrsim 0.5$ K, and grows more pronounced as $T$ is decreased. The effect ma…
Ferromagnetic vortices deliver robust out-of-plane magnetization at extremely small scales. Their handling and creation therefore has high potential to become a necessary ingredient for future data storage technologies in order to keep up with the pace of growing information density demands. In this study we show that by using one step nanolithography method, we are able to create ferromagnetic vortex lattices in thin nickel films. The necessary control of the magnetic stray field at the domain edges was achieved by actively modifying the ferromagnetic thin film anisotropic properties at nanom…
Superconducting Nb thin films with rectangular arrays of submicron antidots have been systemically investigated by transport measurements. In low fields, the magnetoresistance curves demonstrate well-defined dips at integral and rational numbers of flux quanta per unit cell, which corresponds to a superconducting wire network-like regime. When the magnetic field is higher than a saturation field, interstitial vortices interrupt the collective oscillation in low fields and form vortex sublattice, where a larger magnetic field interval is observed. In higher fields, a crossover behavior from the…
By measuring magnetoresistance and Hall effect in classically moderate perpendicular magnetic field in Si-MOSFET-type macroscopic antidot array we found a novel effect: nonlinear with field, temperature- and density-dependent Hall resistivity. We discuss qualitative explanation of the phenomenon and suggest that it might originate from strong temperature dependence of the resistivity and mobility in the shells of the antidots.
Graphene samples can have a very high carrier mobility if influences from the substrate and the environment are minimized. Embedding a graphene sheet into a heterostructure with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) on both sides was shown to be a particularly efficient way of achieving a high bulk mobility. Nanopatterning graphene can add extra damage and drastically reduce sample mobility by edge disorder. Preparing etched graphene nanostructures on top of an hBN substrate instead of SiO2 is no remedy, as transport characteristics are still dominated by edge roughness. Here we show that etching full…
The magneto-resistance of antidot lattices shows pronounced peaks, which became a hallmark of ballistic electron transport. While most studies agree that they reflect the interplay of regular and chaotic motion in the quasi-classical dynamics, the exact mechanism has been surprisingly controversial. Inspired by recent experiments on graphene antidot lattices showing that the effect survives strong impurity scattering, we give a new explanation of the peaks linked to a fundamental relation between collision times and accessible phase space volumes, accounting for their robustness. Due to the fu…
Large area nickel antidot arrays with density up to 10^10 /cm^2 have been fabricated by depositing nickel onto anodic aluminum oxide membranes that contain lattices of nanopores. Electron microscopy images show a high degree of order of the antidot arrays. Various sizes and shapes of the antidots were observed with increasing thickness of the deposited nickel. New features appear in the antidot arrays in both magnetization and transport measurements when the external magnetic field is parallel to the current direction, including an enhancement and a nonmonotonous field dependence of the magnet…
Ballistic injection in a nanodevice is a complex process where electrons can either be transmitted or reflected, thereby introducing deviations from the otherwise quantized conductance. In this context, quantum rings (QRs) appear as model geometries: in a semiclassical view, most electrons bounce against the central QR antidot, which strongly reduces injection efficiency. Thanks to an analogy with Rutherford scattering, we show that a local partial depletion of the QR close to the edge of the antidot can counter-intuitively ease ballistic electron injection. On the contrary, local charge accum…
Spin-dependent electronic transport in magnetic double-island devices is considered theoretically in the sequential tunneling regime. Electric current and tunnel magnetoresistance are analyzed as a function of the bias voltage and spin relaxation time in the islands. It is shown that the interplay of spin accumulation on the islands and charging effects leads to periodic modification of the differential conductance and tunnel magnetoresistance. For a sufficiently long spin relaxation time, the modulations are associated with periodic oscillations of the sign of both the tunnel magnetoresistanc…
We develop a theory of magneto-transport properties of two-dimensional electron gas in cylindrical geometry where finite bias and microwave are locally applied. By invesitgating the Landauer conductance based on Floquet theory, we obtain the conductance without perturbation analysis. We show that the dc conductance becomes negative when dc electric field is applied inside the 2DEG with sufficient microwave power. A positive sign of the current is restored by increasing dc bias. We analyze the radiation induced non-equilibrium distribution function with respect to the frequency of the applied m…
We address the electronic resonant transport in presence of a transverse magnetic field through the single level of a suspended carbon nanotube acting as a quantum oscillator. We predict a negative magneto-conductance with a magnetic-field induced narrowing of the resonance line and a reduction of the conductance peak when the nanotube is asymmetrically contacted to the leads. At finite bias voltage we study the threshold for phonon-assisted transport.
The current through ferromagnetic single-electron transistors (SET's) is considered. Using path integrals the linear response conductance is formulated as a function of the tunnel conductance vs. quantum conductance and the temperature vs. Coulomb charging energy. The magneto-resistance of ferromagnet-normal metal-ferromagnet (F-N-F) SET's is almost independent of the Coulomb charging energy and is only reduced when the transport dwell time is longer than the spin-flip relaxation time. In all-ferromagnetic (F-F-F) SET's with negligible spin-flip relaxation time the magneto-resistance is calcul…
The electrical conductance G of magnetostrictive nanocontacts made from Galfenol Fe73Ga27 can be reproducibly switched between on and off states in a low magnetic field of 20 to 30 mT at 10 K. The switching behavior is in agreement with the magnetic field dependence of the magnetostriction inferred from the magnetization behavior, causing a positive magnetostrictive strain along the magnetic field. The repeated magneticfield cycling leads to a stable contact geometry and to a robust contact configuration with a very low hysteresis of 1 mT between opening and closing the contact due to a traini…
We calculate the linear conductance of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG)-based junction between a normal semiconductor section and a hybrid semiconductor-superconductor section, under perpendicular magnetic field. We consider two important terms often neglected in the literature, the magneto-orbital and transverse Rashba spin-orbit. The strong orbital effect due to the magnetic field yields topological phase transitions to nontrivial phases hosting Majorana modes in the hybrid section. The presence of a potential barrier at the junction interface reveals the Majorana phases as quantized pl…
The influence of a quantizing magnetic field $H$ to the conductance of a tunnel point contact in the presence of the single defect has been considered. We demonstrate that the conductance exhibits specific magneto-quantum oscillations, the amplitude and period of which depend on the distance between the contact and the defect. We show that a non-monotonic dependence of the point-contact conductance results from a superposition of two types of oscillations: A short period oscillation arising from electron focusing by the field $H$ and a long period oscillation of Aharonov-Bohm-type originated f…
We have observed a large positive quasi-classical magneto-resistance (MR) in a high mobility 2D electron gas in AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. The magneto-resistance is non-saturating and increases with magnetic field as $ρ_{xx}\sim B^α (α=0.9-1.2)$. In antidot lattices a non-monotonic MR is observed. We show that in both cases this MR can be qualitatively described in terms of the theory recently advanced by Polyakov et al (PRB, 64, 205306 (2001)). Their prediction is that such behavior as we observe may be the consequence of a concurrent existence of short and long range scattering potentials.
Magnetic states of the electron gas confined in modulation-doped core-shell nanowires are calculated for a transverse field of arbitrary strength and orientation. Magneto-conductance is predicted within the Landauer approach. The modeling takes fully into account the radial material modulation, the prismatic symmetry and the doping profile of realistic GaAs/AlGaAs devices within an envelope-function approach, and electron-electron interaction is included in a mean-field self-consistent approach. Calculations show that in the low free-carrier density regime, magnetic states can be described in …
We investigate charge conductance and spin and valley polarization along with the tunnelling magneto-resistance (TMR) in silicene junctions composed of normal silicene and ferromagnetic silicene. We show distinct features of the conductances for parallel and anti-parallel spin configurations and the TMR, as the ferromagnetic-normal-ferromagnetic (FNF) junction is tuned by an external electric field. We analyse the behavior of the charge conductance and valley and spin polarizations in terms of the independent conductances of the different spins at the two valleys and the band structure of ferr…
We compute the magneto-conductance of a short junction made out of a Weyl semi-metal. We show that it displays quantum oscillations at low magnetic field and low temperature, before reaching a universal high-field regime where it increases linearly with the field. Besides identifying a new characterization of the physics of materials with Weyl singularities in their energy spectrum, this ballistic regime corresponds to the simplest setup to study and understand the manifestation of the so-called chiral anomaly of massless relativistic particles in condensed matter. At low fields the algebraic …
The influence of a single magnetic cluster in a non-magnetic host metal on the spin current $\mathbf{j}^{(s)}$ and the charge current $\mathbf{j}$ in the vicinity of a ferromagnetic STM tip is studied theoretically. Spin-flip processes due to electron interaction with the cluster are taken into account. We show that quantum interference between the partial waves injected from the STM tip and those scattered by the cluster results in the appearance of components perpendicular to the initial polarization of the spin current $\mathbf{j}^{(s)}$, which obtain a strongly inhomogeneous spatial distri…
We present transport measurements in superconductor-nanowire devices with a gated constriction forming a quantum point contact. Zero-bias features in tunneling spectroscopy appear at finite magnetic fields, and oscillate in amplitude and split away from zero bias as a function of magnetic field and gate voltage. A crossover in magnetoconductance is observed: Magnetic fields above ~ 0.5 T enhance conductance in the low-conductance (tunneling) regime but suppress conductance in the high-conductance (multichannel) regime. We consider these results in the context of Majorana zero modes as well as …
The magnetic circular dichroism and the Faraday rotation are the fundamental phenomena of great practical importance arising from the breaking of the time reversal symmetry by a magnetic field. In most materials the strength and the sign of these effects can be only controlled by the field value and its orientation. Furthermore, the terahertz range is lacking materials having the ability to affect the polarisation state of the light in a non-reciprocal manner. Here we demonstrate, using broadband terahertz magneto-electro-optical spectroscopy, that in graphene both the magnetic circular dichro…
We study, both theoretically and experimentally, the negative magnetoresistance (MR) of a two-dimensional (2D) electron gas in a weak transverse magnetic field $B$. The analysis is carried out in a wide range of zero-$B$ conductances $g$ (measured in units of $e^2/h$), including the range of intermediate conductances, $g\sim 1$. Interpretation of the experimental results obtained for a 2D electron gas in GaAs/In$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As/GaAs single quantum well structures is based on the theory which takes into account terms of higher orders in $1/g$, stemming from both the interference contribution an…
The magneto-conductance of an InAs nanowire is investigated with respect to the relative orientation between external magnetic field and the nanowire axis. It is found that both the perpendicular and the parallel magnetic fields induce a positive magneto-conductance. Yet the parallel magnetic field induced longitudinal magneto-conductance has a smaller magnitude. This anisotropic magneto-transport phenomenon is studied as a function of temperature, magnetic field strength and at an arbitrary angle between the magnetic field and the nanowire. We show that the observed effect is in quantitative …
We report on transport measurements of the insulating state that forms at the charge neutrality point of graphene in a magnetic field. Using both conventional two-terminal measurements, sensitive to bulk and edge conductance, and Corbino measurements, sensitive only to the bulk conductance, we observed a vanishing conductance with increasing magnetic fields. By examining the resistance changes of this insulating state with varying perpendicular and in-plane fields, we probe the spin-active components of the excitations in total fields of up to 45 Tesla. Our results indicate that ν=0 quantum Ha…
The current in response to a bias in certain two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), can have a nonzero transverse component under a finite magnetic field applied in the plane where electrons are confined. This phenomenon known as planar Hall effect is accompanied by dependencies of both the longitudinal and the transverse components of the current on the angle $ϕ$ between the bias direction and the magnetic field. In 2DEG with spin orbit coupling (SOC) such as oxide interfaces, this effect has been experimentally witnessed. Further, a fourfold oscillation in longitudinal resistance as a function…
Using the Landauer-Buttiker formalism, we calculate the effect of structural twist on electron transport in conducting carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate that even a localized region of twist scatters the propagating pi electrons and induces the opening of a (pseudo-) gap near the Fermi level. The subsequent conductance reduction may be compensated by an applied axial magnetic field, leading to a twist-induced, giant positive magneto-conductance in clean armchair nanotubes.
Electron transport through a one-dimensional ring connected with two external leads, in the presence of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of strength αand a perpendicular magnetic field is studied. Applying Griffith's boundary conditions we derive analytic expressions for the reflection and transmission coefficients of the corresponding one-electron scattering problem. We generalize earlier conductance results by Nitta et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 75, 695 (1999)] and investigate the influence of α, temperature, and a weak magnetic field on the conductance. Varying αand temperature changes the position…
We explore various aspects of magneto-conductance oscillations in semiconductor nanowires, developing quantum transport models based on the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. In the clean case, Aharonov-Bohm (AB - h/e) oscillations are found to be dominant, contingent upon the surface confinement of electrons in the nanowire. We also numerically study disordered nanowires of finite length, bridging a gap in the existing literature. By varying the nanowire length and disorder strength, we identify the transition where Al'tshuler-Aronov-Spivak (AAS - h/2e) oscillations start dominating,…
We provide a semiclassical description of the electronic transport through graphene n-p junctions in the quantum Hall regime. This framework is known to experimentally exhibit conductance plateaus whose origin is still not fully understood. In the magnetic regime (E < vF B), we show the conductance of excited states is essentially zero, while that of the ground state depends on the boundary conditions considered at the edge of the sample. In the electric regime (E > vF B), for a step-like electrostatic potential (abrupt on the scale of the magnetic length), we derive a semiclassical approximat…
