The influence of a single magnetic cluster in a non-magnetic host metal on the spin current $\mathbf{j}^{(s)}$ and the charge current $\mathbf{j}$ in the vicinity of a ferromagnetic STM tip is studied theoretically. Spin-flip processes due to electron interaction with the cluster are taken into account. We show that quantum interference between the partial waves injected from the STM tip and those scattered by the cluster results in the appearance of components perpendicular to the initial polarization of the spin current $\mathbf{j}^{(s)}$, which obtain a strongly inhomogeneous spatial distribution. This interference produces oscillations of the conductance as a function of the distance between the contact and the cluster center. The oscillation amplitude depends on the current polarization. We predict a strong magneto-orientational effect: the conductance oscillations may grow, shrink, or even vanish for rotation of the cluster magnetic moment $\mathbfμ_{\mathrm{eff}}$ by an external magnetic field. These results can be used for the determination of the $ \mathbfμ_{\mathrm{eff}}$ for magnetic clusters below a metal surface.
Atomic-scale understanding of phosphorous donor wave functions underpins the design and optimisation of silicon based quantum devices. The accuracy of large-scale theoretical methods to compute donor wave functions is dependent on descriptions of central-cell-corrections, which are empirically fitted to match experimental binding energies, or other quantities associated with the global properties of the wave function. Direct approaches to understanding such effects in donor wave functions are of great interest. Here, we apply a comprehensive atomistic theoretical framework to compute scanning …
Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect, the well-known archetype of electron-wave interference phenomena, has been explored extensively through transport measurements. However, these techniques lack spatial resolution that would be indispensable for studying the magnetic and electrostatic AB oscillations at the nanometer scale. Here, we demonstrated that scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can be used as an AB interferometer operating on nanometer length scales and the magneto-electric Aharonov-Bohm effect in minimally twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) was directly measured by using STM. In the minimally TBG,…
The interplay of exchange correlations and spin-orbit interaction (SOI) on the many-body spectrum of a copper phtalocyanine (CuPc) molecule and their signatures in transport are investigated. We first derive a minimal model Hamiltonian in a basis of frontier orbitals which is able to reproduce experimentally observed singlet-triplet splittings; in a second step SOI effects are included perturbatively. Major consequences of the SOI are the splitting of former degenerate levels and a magnetic anisotropy, which can be captured by an effective low-energy spin Hamiltonian. We show that STM-based ma…
We report the study of single dangling bonds (DB) on the hydrogen terminated silicon (100) surface using a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope (LT-STM). By investigating samples prepared with different annealing temperatures, we establish the critical role of subsurface arsenic dopants on the DB electronic properties. We show that when the near surface concentration of dopants is depleted as a result of $1250°C$ flash anneals, a single DB exhibits a sharp conduction step in its I(V) spectroscopy that is not due to a density of states effect but rather corresponds to a DB charge state…
We propose a protocol to certify the presence of entanglement in artificial on-surface atomic and molecular spin arrays using electron spin resonance carried by scanning tunnel microscopes (ESR-STM). We first generalize the theorem that relates global spin susceptibility as an entanglement witness to the case of anisotropic Zeeman interactions, relevant for surfaces. We then propose a method to measure the spin susceptibilities of surface-spin arrays combining ESR-STM with atomic manipulation. Our calculations show that entanglement can be certified in antiferromagnetically coupled spin dimers…
Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), vibrating sample magnetometry and other physical property measurements are used to investigate the structure, morphology, magnetic and magneto-transport properties of (001)-oriented Cr$_2$Te$_3$ thin films grown on Al$_2$O$_3$(0001) and Si(111)-(7$\times$7) surfaces by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Streaky RHEED patterns indicate flat smooth film growth on both substrates. STM studies show the hexagonal arrangements of surface atoms. Determination of the lattice parameter from atomically resolved STM imag…
Relating magnetotransport properties to specific spin textures at surfaces or interfaces is an intense field of research nowadays. Here, we investigate the variation of the electrical resistance of Ge(111) grown epitaxially on semi-insulating Si(111) under the application of an external magnetic field. We find a magnetoresistance term which is linear in current density j and magnetic field B, hence odd in j and B, corresponding to a unidirectional magnetoresistance. At 15 K, for I = 10 $μ$A (or j = 0.33 A/m) and B = 1 T, it represents 0.5 % of the zero field resistance, a much higher value com…
The results of ultra-high vacuum low-temperature scanning-tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) of atomically clean (111) surface of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ are presented. We observed several types of new subsurface defects whose location and charge correspond to p-type conduction of grown crystals. The sign of the thermoelectric effect also indicates p-type conduction. STM and STS measurements demonstrate that the chemical potential is always located inside the bulk band gap. We also observed changes in the local density of states in the vicinity of the quintuple la…
Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) measures tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) with atomic resolution. While various methods for achieving SP probes have been developed, each is limited with respect to fabrication, performance, and allowed operating conditions. In this study, we present the fabrication and use of SP-STM tips made from commercially available antiferromagnetic $\rm{Mn_{88}Ni_{12}}$ foil. The tips are intrinsically SP, which is attractive for exploring magnetic phenomena in the zero field limit. The tip material is relatively ductile and straightforward to etch. We…
We show that Pb and Bi adatoms and dimers have a large tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) of up to 60% when adsorbed on a magnetic transition-metal surface due to strong spin-orbit coupling and the hybridization of 6p orbitals with 3d states of the magnetic layer. Using density functional theory, we have explored the TAMR effect of Pb and Bi adatoms and dimers adsorbed on a Mn monolayer on W(110). This surface exhibits a noncollinear cycloidal spin spiral ground state with an angle of 173$^\circ$ between neighboring spins which allows to rotate the spin quantization axis of an adat…
The kagome lattice Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ exhibits the quintessential topological phenomena of a magnetic Weyl semimetal such as the chiral anomaly and Fermi-arc surface states. Probing its magnetic properties is crucial for understanding this correlated topological state. Here, using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S), we report the discovery of localized spin-orbit polarons (SOPs) with three-fold rotation symmetry nucleated around single-S vacancies in Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. The SOPs carry a spin-polarized magnetic moment and a large orbital magnetization of a topologic…
Using density functional theory, we investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of $3d$ transition-metal adatoms adsorbed on a monolayer of Mn on W(110). Mn/W(110) has a noncollinear cycloidal spin-spiral ground state with an angle of 173$^\circ$ between magnetic moments of adjacent Mn rows. It allows to rotate the spin orientation of an adsorbed magnetic adatom quasi-continuously. Therefore, this surface is ideally suited for manipulating the spin direction of individual atoms and exploring their magnetic properties using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The adsorbed V and Cr trans…
Polyalanine molecules (PA) with an α-helix conformation gathered recently a lot of interest as the propagation of electrons through the chiral backbone structure comes along with spin polarization of the transmitted electrons. By means of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy at ambient conditions, PA molecules adsorbed on surfaces of epitaxial magnetic Al2O3/Pt/Au/Co/Au nanostructures with perpendicular anisotropy were studied. Thereby, a correlation between the PA molecules ordering at the surface with the electron tunneling across this hybrid system as a function of the substrate m…
The ability to imprint a given material property to another through proximity effect in layered two-dimensional materials has opened the way to the creation of designer materials. Here, we use molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) for a direct synthesis of a superconductor-magnet hybrid heterostructure by combining superconducting niobium diselenide (NbSe$_2$) with the monolayer ferromagnetic chromium tribromide (CrBr$_3$). Using different characterization techniques and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have confirmed that the CrBr$_3$ monolayer retains its ferromagnetic ordering with a…
