Using density functional theory, we investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of $3d$ transition-metal adatoms adsorbed on a monolayer of Mn on W(110). Mn/W(110) has a noncollinear cycloidal spin-spiral ground state with an angle of 173$^\circ$ between magnetic moments of adjacent Mn rows. It allows to rotate the spin orientation of an adsorbed magnetic adatom quasi-continuously. Therefore, this surface is ideally suited for manipulating the spin direction of individual atoms and exploring their magnetic properties using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The adsorbed V and Cr transition-metal adatoms couple antiferromagnetically to the nearest neighbor Mn atom of Mn monolayer while Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni couple ferromagnetically. The magnetic moments of the $3d$ adatoms are large and show a Hund's rule type of trend with a peak in the middle of the series. We find large spin splitting of the $3d$ transition-metal adatoms, large spin polarization of the local vacuum density of states up to 73\% at the Fermi energy, and significant tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance enhancement up to 27\%. We conclude that such large values stem from the strong hybridization between the adatoms and the Mn atoms of the monolayer. Furthermore, identification of spin orientations of the adatom using spin-polarized STM is only possible for Co and V adatoms.
The so-called spin-orbit proximity effect experimentally realized in graphene (G) on several different heavy metal surfaces opens a new perspective to engineer the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for new generation spintronics devices. Here, via large-scale density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed for two distinct graphene/metal models, G/Pt(111) and G/Au/Ni(111), we show that the spin-orbit splitting of the Dirac cones (DCs) in these stuctures might be enhanced by either adsorption of adatoms on top of graphene (decoration) or between the graphene and the metal (intercalation). While …
Periodically corrugated epitaxial graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on metallic substrates are considered as perspective templates for the self-assembly of nanoparticles arrays. By using first-principles calculations, we determine binding energies and diffusion activation barriers of metal adatoms on graphene and h-BN. The observed chemical trends can be understood in terms of the interplay between charge transfer and covalent bonding involving the adatom d electrons. We further investigate the electronic effects of the metallic substrate and find that periodically corrugated templat…
We investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of single Fe, Co, and Ni atoms and clusters on monolayer graphene (MLG) on SiC(0001) by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), x-ray absorption spectroscopy, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and ab initio calculations. STM reveals different adsorption sites for Ni and Co adatoms. XMCD proves Fe and Co adatoms to be paramagnetic and to exhibit an out-of-plane easy axis in agreement with theory. In contrast, we experimentally find a nonmagnetic ground state for Ni monomers while an increasing cluster size leads to sizeable mag…
Hydrogen adatoms and other species covalently bound to graphene act as resonant scattering centers affecting the electronic transport properties and inducing Anderson localization. We show that attractive interactions between adatoms on graphene and their diffusion mobility strongly modify the spatial distribution, thus fully eliminating isolated adatoms and increasing the population of larger size adatom aggregates. Our scaling analysis shows that such aggregation of adatoms increases conductance by up to several orders of magnitude and results in significant extension of the Anderson localiz…
We investigate the adsorption sites of $3d$ transition metal (TM) adatoms by means of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Co and Ni adatoms were adsorbed on two types of graphene on SiC(0001), i.e. pristine epitaxial monolayer graphene (MLG) and quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene (QFMLG). In the case of QFMLG, two stable adsorption sites are identified, while in the case of MLG, only one adsorption site is observed. Our experimental results reveal the decoupling efficiency as a crucial parameter for determining the adsorption site as well as the electronic prope…
We study the effect of surface adsorption of 27 different adatoms on the electronic and magnetic properties of monolayer black phosphorus using density functional theory. Choosing a few representative elements from each group, ranging from alkali metals (group I) to halogens (group VII), we calculate the band structure, density of states, magnetic moment and effective mass for the energetically most stable location of the adatom on monolayer phosphorene. We predict that group I metals (Li, Na, K), and group III adatoms (Al, Ga, In) are effective in enhancing the n-type mobile carrier density, …
The formation energies for mono- and bivacancies in graphene in the presence of adatoms of various metals and small metallic clusters have been calculated. It is shown that transition metal impurities, such as iron, nickel and, especially, cobalt reduce dramatically the vacancy formation energies whereas gold impurities have almost no effect on characteristics of the vacancies. This results highlight that special measures are required in order to protect graphene from damage by transition metal leads.
Ab initio calculations of surface-state mediated interactions between Cu adatoms on transition metal surfaces are presented. We concentrate on Co/Cu(111) and Co(0001) substrates and compare results with our calculations for Cu(111). Our studies show that surface states of Co/Cu(111) and Co(0001) are spin-polarized. We reveal that long-range interactions between adatoms are mainly determined by sp-majority states. In contrast to Cu(111) and Co/Cu(111), the interaction between adatoms on Co(0001) is strongly suppressed at large adsorbate separations.
In this paper, the work function of graphene doped by different metal adatoms and at different concentrations is investigated. Density functional theory is used to maximize the reduction of the work function. In general, the work function drops significantly before reaching saturation. For example in the case of Cs doping, the work function saturates at 2.05 eV with a modest 8 % doping. The adsorption of different concentrations on metal adatoms on graphene is also studied. Our calculations show that the adatoms prefer to relax at hollow sites. The transfer of electron from metallic dopants to…
Even something as conceptually simple as adsorption of electronegative adatoms on metal surfaces, where repulsive lateral interactions are expected for obvious reasons, can lead to unanticipated behavior. In this context, we explain the origin of surprising lateral interactions between electronegative adatoms observed on some metal surfaces by means of density functional theory calculations of four electronegative atoms (N, O, F, Cl) on 70 surfaces of 44 pristine metals. Four different scenarios for lateral interactions are identified, some of them being unexpected: (i) they are repulsive, whi…
For a set of fcc metals our total energy calculations, based on many body potentials, show that activation barriers for lateral manipulation of an adatom at a step edge depend on the tip/substrate composition. Of the six homogeneous systems studied, manipulation on stepped Ag(111) showed the lowest energy barrier for adatom hopping towards the tip, although the relative probability for this process was largest on Cu(111). For a representative Cu/Pt heterogeneous system we find lateral manipulation of a Pt adatom along a step on Pt(111) by a Cu(100) tip to be energetically much less favourable …
We carried out first-principles calculations to investigate the electronic properties of the monolayer blue phosphorene (BlueP) decorated by the group-IVB transition-metal adatoms (Cr, Mo and W), and found that the Cr-decorated BlueP is a magnetic half metal, while the Mo- and W-decorated BlueP are semiconductors with band gaps smaller than 0.2 eV. Compressive strains make the band gaps close and reopen and band inversions occur during this process, which induces topological transitions in the Mo-decorated BlueP (with strain of -5.75%) and W-decorated BlueP (with strain of -4.25%) from normal …
The state of the art ab initio calculations reveal the effect of a scanning tunnelling microscopy tip on magnetic properties and conductance of a benzene-adatom sandwich on Cu(001). We concentrate on a benzene-Co system interacting with a Cr tip. Our studies give a clear evidence that magnetism and conductance in molecule-adatom junctions can be tailored by the STM tip. Varying the tip-substrate distance the magnetic moment of the Co adatom can be switched on/off. The interplay between spin-polarized electron transport through the junction and its magnetic properties is demonstrated. A spin-fi…
We propose that the indirect adatom-adatom interaction mediated by the conduction electrons of a metallic surface is responsible for the $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}\Leftrightarrow 3\times 3$ structural phase transitions observed in Sn/Ge (111) and Pb/Ge (111). When the indirect interaction overwhelms the local stress field imposed by the substrate registry, the system suffers a phonon instability, resulting in a structural phase transition in the adlayer. Our theory is capable of explaining all the salient features of the $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}\Leftrightarrow 3\times 3$ transitions observed in …
It has been shown that the first C layer on the SiC(0001)(2{\times}2)C surface already exhibits graphene-like electronic structure, with linear pi bands near the Dirac point. Indeed, the (2{\times}2)C reconstruction, with a Si adatom and C restatom structure, efficiently passivates the SiC(0001) surface thanks to an adatom/restatom charge transfer mechanism. Here, we study the effects of interface modifications on the graphene layer using density functional theory calculations. The modifications we consider are inspired from native interface defects observed by scanning tunneling microscopy. O…
When surface state electrons scatter at perturbations, such as magnetic or nonmagnetic adatoms or clusters on surfaces, an electronic resonance, localized at the adatom site, can develop below the bottom of the surface state band for both spin channels. In the case of adatoms, these states have been found very recently in scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments\cite{limot,olsson} for the Cu(111) and Ag(111) surfaces. Motivated by these experiments, we carried out a systematic theoretical investigation of the electronic structure of these surface states in the presence of magnetic and non-m…
The adatom arrays on surfaces offer an ideal playground to explore the mechanisms of chemical bonding via changes in the local electronic tunneling spectra. While this information is readily available in hyperspectral scanning tunneling spectroscopy data, its analysis has been considerably impeded by a lack of suitable analytical tools. Here we develop a machine learning based workflow combining supervised feature identification in the spatial domain and un-supervised clustering in the energy domain to reveal the details of structure-dependent changes of the electronic structure in adatom arra…
The dramatic changes in electronic and magnetic properties are investigated using the first-principles calculations for (Cl, Br, I, At)-adsorbed graphene nanoribbons. The rich and unique features are clearly revealed in the adatom-dominated band structures, p-type doping, spin arrangement/magnetic moment, spatial charge distribution, and orbital- and spin-projected density of states. Halogen adsorptions can create the non-magnetic, ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic metals, being mainly determined by concentrations and edge structures. The number of holes per unit cell increases with the adat…
The naturally weak spin-orbit coupling in Graphene can be largely enhanced by adatom deposition (e.g. Weeks et al. Phys. Rev. X 1, 021001 (2011)). However, the dynamics of the adatoms also induces a coupling between phonons and the electron spin. Using group theory and a tight-binding model, we systematically investigate the coupling between the low-energy in-plane phonons and the electron spin in single-layer graphene uniformly decorated with heavy adatoms. Our results provide the foundation for future investigations of spin transport and superconductivity in this system. In order to quantify…
The combination of the unique properties of graphene with spin polarization and magnetism for the design of new spintronic concepts and devices has been hampered by the small Coulomb interaction and the tiny spin-orbit coupling of carbon in pristine graphene. Such device concepts would take advantage of the control of the spin degree of freedom utilizing the widely available electric fields in electronics or of topological transport mechanisms such as the conjectured quantum anomalous Hall effect. Here we show, using first-principles methods, that 5d transition-metal (TM) adatoms deposited on …
Although atomic diffusion on metal surfaces under high electric fields has been studied theoretically and experimentally since the 1970s, its accurate and quantitative theoretical description remains a significant challenge. In our previous work, we developed a theoretical framework that describes the atomic dynamics on metal surfaces in the presence of an electric field in terms of the local polarization characteristics of the surface at the vicinity of a moving atom. Here, we give a deeper analysis of the physics underlying this framework, introducing and rigorously defining the concept of t…
We theoretically investigate spin-resolved currents flowing in large-area graphene, with and without defects, doped with single atoms of noble metals (Cu, Ag and Au) and 3d-transition metals (Mn,Fe,Co and Ni). We show that the presence of a local magnetic moment is a necessary but not sufficient condition to have a non zero current polarization. An essential requirement is the presence of spin-split localized levels near the Fermi energy that strongly hybridize with the graphene pi-bands. We also show that a gate potential can be used to tune the energy of these localized levels, leading to an…
We present a systematic study of the atomic and electronic structure of the Si(111)-(5x2)-Au reconstruction using first-principles electronic structure calculations based on the density functional theory. We analyze the structural models proposed by Marks and Plass [Phys. Rev. Lett.75, 2172 (1995)], those proposed recently by Erwin [Phys. Rev. Lett.91, 206101 (2003)], and a completely new structure that was found during our structural optimizations. We study in detail the energetics and the structural and electronic properties of the different models. For the two most stable models, we also ca…
Phosphorene is emerging as a promising 2D semiconducting material with a direct band gap and high carrier mobility. In this paper, we examine the role of the extrinsic point defects including surface adatoms in modifying the electronic properties of phosphorene using density functional theory. The surface adatoms considered are B, C, N, O and F with a [He] core electronic configuration. Our calculations show that B and C, with electronegativity close to P, prefer to break the sp3 bonds of phosphorene, and reside at the interstitial sites in the 2D lattice by forming sp2 bonds with the native a…
The stability, electronic and magnetic properties of Fe atoms adsorbed on the self-assembled Bi-dimer lines nanostructure on the H/Si(001) surface are addressed by spin-density functional calculations. Our results show that Fe adatoms are much more stable on sites closer to the Bi nanolines being able to form one-dimensional atomic arrays. The most stable structure occurs on a missing dimer line aside the Bi dimers, which corresponds to an array with distances between Fe adatoms of about 8 Ang. In this array the irons are coupled antiferromagnetically with spin magnetic moment of about 1.5 Boh…
Graphene forms from a relatively dense, tightly-bound C-adatom gas, when elemental C is deposited on or segregates to the Ru(0001) surface. Nonlinearity of the graphene growth rate with C adatom density suggests that growth proceeds by addition of C atom clusters to the graphene edge. The generality of this picture has now been studied by use of low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) to observe graphene formation when Ru(0001) and Ir(111) surfaces are exposed to ethylene. The finding that graphene growth velocities and nucleation rates on Ru have precisely the same dependence on adatom concentr…
The electronic and magnetic properties of individual Fe atoms adsorbed on the surface of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$(111) are investigated. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy prove the existence of two distinct types of Fe species, while our first-principles calculations assign them to Fe adatoms in the hcp and fcc hollow sites. The combination of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements and angular dependent magnetization curves reveals out-of-plane anisotropies for both species with anisotropy constants of $K_{\text{fcc}} = (10 \pm 4)$ meV/atom and $K_{\text{hcp}…
When a foreign atom is placed on a surface of a metal, the surrounding sea of electrons responds screening the additional charge leading to oscillations or ripples. On surfaces, those electrons are sometimes confined to two-dimensional surface states, whose spin-degeneracy is lifted due to the Rashba effect arising from the spin-orbit interaction of electrons and the inversion asymmetric environment. It is believed that at least for a single adatom scanning tunneling microscopy measurements are insensitive to the Rashba splitting i.e. no signatures in the charge oscillations will be observed. …
Electronic and transport properties of Graphene, a one-atom thick crystalline material, are sensitive to the presence of atoms adsorbed on its surface. An ensemble of randomly positioned adatoms, each serving as a scattering center, leads to the Bolzmann-Drude diffusion of charge determining the resistivity of the material. An important question, however, is whether the distribution of adatoms is always genuinely random. In this Article we demonstrate that a dilute adatoms on graphene may have a tendency towards a spatially correlated state with a hidden Kekule mosaic order. This effect emerge…
By ab initio calculation, Au, Cu, Fe, Ni and Pt adatoms were proposed for modulating the electronic property of graphdiyne naoribbons (GDNRs). GDNRs of 1~4 nm in width were found to be stable at room temperature, and the thermal rates of Au, Cu, Fe, Ni and Pt adatoms escaping from GDNR are slower than 0.003 atoms per hour even at 900 K. According to the calculation, Au and Cu-decorated GDNRs are metallic with carrier concentrations close to that of graphene at room temperature, while Fe, Ni and Pt-decorated GDNRs are n-type semiconductors with impurity states below Fermi energy. Heterojunction…
Using first-principles calculations within density functional theory, we study the energetics and kinetics of carbon nucleation in the early stages of epitaxial graphene growth on three representative stepped metal surfaces: Ir(111), Ru(0001), and Cu(111). We find that on the flat surfaces of Ir(111) and Ru(0001), two carbon atoms repel each other, while they prefer to form a dimer on Cu(111). Moreover, the step edges on Ir and Ru surfaces cannot serve as effective trapping centers for single carbon adatoms, but can readily facilitate the formation of carbon dimers. These contrasting behaviors…
Electronic and atomic structures of the clean, and As and Te covered Si(211) surface are studied using pseudopotential density functional method. The clean surface is found to have (2 X 1) and rebonded (1 X 1) reconstructions as stable surface structures, but no π-bonded chain reconstruction. Binding energies of As and Te adatoms at a number of symmetry sites on the ideal and (2 X 1) reconstructed surfaces have been calculated because of their importance in the epitaxial growth of CdTe and other materials on the Si(211) surface. The special symmetry sites on these surfaces having the highest b…
The 2007 discovery of quantized conductance in HgTe quantum wells delivered the field of topological insulators (TIs) its first experimental confirmation. While many three-dimensional TIs have since been identified, HgTe remains the only known two-dimensional system in this class. Difficulty fabricating HgTe quantum wells has, moreover, hampered their widespread use. With the goal of breaking this logjam we provide a blueprint for stabilizing a robust TI state in a more readily available two-dimensional material---graphene. Using symmetry arguments, density functional theory, and tight-binding…
We present an ab initio study of spin dependent transport in armchair carbon nanotubes with transition metal adsorbates, iron or vanadium. We neglect the effect of tube curvature and model the nanotube by graphene with periodic boundary conditions. A density functional theory based nonequilibrium Green's function method is used to compute the electronic structure and zero-bias conductance. The presence of the adsorbate causes a strong scattering of electrons of one spin type only. The scattering is shown to be due to coupling of the two armchair band states to the metal 3d orbitals with matchi…
We show that Pb and Bi adatoms and dimers have a large tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) of up to 60% when adsorbed on a magnetic transition-metal surface due to strong spin-orbit coupling and the hybridization of 6p orbitals with 3d states of the magnetic layer. Using density functional theory, we have explored the TAMR effect of Pb and Bi adatoms and dimers adsorbed on a Mn monolayer on W(110). This surface exhibits a noncollinear cycloidal spin spiral ground state with an angle of 173$^\circ$ between neighboring spins which allows to rotate the spin quantization axis of an adat…
The electronic properties of aluminum-doped graphenes enriched by multi-orbital hybridizations are investigated using first-principles calculations. The feature-rich electronic structures exhibit the quasi-rigid red shifts of the carbon-created energy bands, the Al-dominated valence and conduction bands, and many free electrons in the conduction Dirac cone. These are directly reflected in the special structures of density of states (DOS). The Al- and alkali-induced high free carrier densities are almost the same. There exist certain important differences among the Al-, alkali- and halogen-dope…
In some topological insulators, such as graphene and WTe$_2$, band inversion originates from chemical bonding and space group symmetry, in contrast to materials such as Bi$_2$Se$_3$, where the band inversion derives from relativistic effects in the atoms. In the former, band inversion is susceptible to changes of the chemical environment, e.g. by defects, while the latter are less affected by defects due to the larger energy scale associated with atomic relativistic effects. Motivated by recent experiments, we study the effect of Te-vacancies and Te-adatoms on the electronic properties of WTe$…
Growth of atomic indium chains - 1D islands - on the Si(100)-2x1 surface was observed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at room temperature and simulated by means of a kinetic Monte Carlo method. Density of indium islands and island size distribution were obtained for various deposition rates and coverage. STM observation of growth during deposition of indium provided information on growth kinetics and relaxation of grown layers. Important role of C-type defects at adsorption of metal atoms was observed. Measured growth characteristics were simulated using a microscopic model with anisotr…
Many recent calculations have been performed to study a Co atom adsorbed on graphene, with significantly varying results on the nature of the bonding. We use auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) and a size-correction embedding scheme to accurately calculate the binding energy of Co on graphene. We find that as a function of the distance h between the Co atom and the six-fold hollow site, there are three distinct ground states corresponding to three electronic configurations of the Co atom. Two of these states provide binding and exhibit a double-well feature with nearly equal binding en…
Metal deposition on oxide surfaces usually results in adatoms, clusters, or islands of the deposited material, where defects in the surface often act as nucleation centers. Here an alternate configuration is reported. After the vapor deposition of Fe on the In$_2$O$_3$(111) surface at room temperature, ordered adatoms are observed with scanning tunneling microscopy. These are identical to the In adatoms that form when the sample is reduced by heating in ultrahigh vacuum. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that Fe interchanges with In in the topmost layer, pushing the excess I…
Using the first-principles and Monte Carlo methods, here we systematically study magnetic properties of monolayer octagonal-tetragonal phosphorus with 3d transition-metal (TM) adatoms. Different from the puckered hexagonal black phosphorus monolayer (phosphorene or $α$-P), the octagonal-tetragonal phase of 2D phosphorus (named as ot-P or $ε$-P in this article) is buckled with octagon-tetragon structure. Our calculations show that all TMs, except the closed-shell Zn atom, are able to strongly bind onto monolayer $ot$-P with significant binding energies. Local magnetic moments (up to 6 $μ$B) on …
While the phenomenon of metal substrate adatom incorporation into molecular overlayers is generally believed to occur in several systems, the experimental evidence for this relies on the interpretation of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) images, which can be ambiguous and provides no quantitative structural information. We show that surface X-ray diffraction (SXRD) uniquely provides unambiguous identification of these metal adatoms. We present the results of a detailed structural study of the Au(111)-F4TCNQ system, combining surface characterisation by STM, low energy electron diffraction …
We demonstrate single atom anisotropic magnetoresistance on the surface of a topological insulator, arising from the interplay between the helical spin-momentum-locked surface electronic structure and the hybridization of the magnetic adatom states. Our first-principles quantum transport calculations based on density functional theory for Mn on Bi$_2$Se$_3$ elucidate the underlying mechanism. We complement our findings with a two dimensional model valid for both single adatoms and magnetic clusters, which leads to a proposed device setup for experimental realization. Our results provide an exp…
The tunnelling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) effect describes the sensitivity of spin-polarized electron transport to the orientation of the magnetization with respect to the crystallographic axes. As the TAMR effect requires only a single magnetic electrode, in contrast to the tunnelling magnetoresistance effect, it offers an attractive route towards alternative spintronics applications. In this work we consider the TAMR effect at the single-atom limit by investigating the anisotropy of the local density of states in the vacuum above transition-metal adatoms adsorbed on a noncollinear …
Surface-state mediated interactions between adsorbates on surfaces can be exploited for the fabrication of self-organized nanostructures such as two-dimensional superlattices of adatoms. Using angle-resolved photoemission we provide experimental evidence that these interactions can be drastically modified by adsorbate-induced alterations in the surface potential barrier. This, in turn, will cause significant changes in the ordering of the adsorbates. For the studied case example of Cs adatoms on Ag(111) our momentum-resolved measurements reveal the surface state Fermi wave vector to be increas…
Ab initio calculations within the density-functional theory formalism are performed to investigate the chemical functionalization of a graphene-like monolayer of silicon - silicene - with B, N, Al or P atoms. The structural, electronic, magnetic and vibrational properties are reported. The most preferable adsorption sites are found to be valley, bridge, valley and hill site for B, N, Al and P adatoms, respectively. All the relaxed systems with adsorbed/substituted atoms exhibit metallic behaviour with strongly bonded B, N, Al, and P atoms accompanied by an appreciable electron transfer from si…
We study collective behavior of magnetic adatoms randomly distributed on the surface of a topological insulator. As a consequence of the spin-momentum locking on the surface, the RKKY-type interactions of two adatom spins depend on the direction of the vector connecting them, thus interactions of an ensemble of adatoms are frustrated. We show that at low temperatures the frustrated RKKY interactions give rise to two phases: an ordered ferromagnetic phase with spins pointing perpendicular to the surface, and a disordered spin-glass-like phase. The two phases are separated by a quantum phase tra…

Nanoribbons of MoS$_2$ present a unique electronic structure that consists of a semiconducting bulk bounded by metallic edges; same holds for other Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs) (Mo-,W-,S$_{2}$,Se$_{2}$). We perform first-principles calculations for TMD nanoribbons with reconstructed zig-zag metal terminated edges that contain chalcogen adatoms. All nanorobbons have possitive edge energies when the chemical potential of chalcogens is close to the energy of solids, and negative edge energies for high chemical potential. The reconstruction with two chalcogen adatoms is expected to be t…
Electronic and topological properties of MoS2 monolayers endowed with 3d transition metal (TM) adatoms (V-Fe) are explored by using ab initio methods and k.p models. Without the consideration of the Hubbard U interaction, the V, Cr, and Fe adatoms tend to locate on the top of the Mo atoms, while the most stable site for the Mn atom is at the hollow position of the Mo-S hexagon. After the Hubbard U is applied, the most stable sites of all the systems become the top of the Mo atoms. Chern insulators without band inversion are achieved in these systems. The V and Fe adsorption systems are the bes…
Exploring an upper limit of magnetic anisotropy in two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, is at the heart of spintronics research. Herein, an atomic-scale perpendicular magnetic anisotropy up to an order of 100 meV per atom, which is far beyond the ordinarily obtained value in graphene and pristine transition metal dichalcogenides, is demonstrated in individual ruthenium and osmium adatoms at a monosulfur vacancy in molybdenum disulfide. We further propose a phenomenological model where a spin state transition that involves hybridization between molyb…
Mono- and few-layer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) provide opportunities for ideal two-dimensional semiconductors for electronic and optoelectronic devices. For electronic devices on TMDCs, it is essential to incorporate n- and/or p-type dopants which are stable in positions after patterned doping. Here we investigate hydrogen doping for TMDC (MX2 with M = Mo, W and X = S, Se, Te) nanosheets by first-principles calculations to address diffusion and doping properties. We find that adsorbed hydrogen atoms in TMDCs are energetically most stable at the interstitial site right on the Mo o…
The coarsening of catalytically-active metal clusters is often accelerated by the presence of gases through the formation of mobile intermediates, though the exact mechanism through which this happens is often subject to debate. We use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to follow the CO induced coalescence of Pd adatoms supported on the Fe3O4(001) surface at room temperature. We show that highly-mobile Pd-carbonyl species, formed via the so-called skyhook effect, are temporarily trapped at other Pd adatoms. Once these reach a critical density, clusters nucleate; subsequent coarsening occurs t…
Organic adlayers on inorganic substrates often contain adatoms, which can be incorporated within the adsorbed molecular species, forming two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks at the substrate surface. The interplay between native adatoms and adsorbed molecules significantly changes various adlayer properties such as the adsorption geometry, the bond strength between the substrate and the adsorbed species, or the work function at the interface. Here we use dispersion-corrected density functional theory to gain insight into the energetics that drive the incorporation of native adatoms within …
Both quantum and classical behavior of single atomic spins on surfaces is determined by the local anisotropy of adatoms and their coupling to the immediate electronic environment. Yet adatoms seldom reside on surfaces alone and it is generally acknowledged that substrated-mediated interactions can couple single spins among each other impacting their magnetic behavior. Here we show that also magnetic anisotropy, which is usually considered to be a constant determined by the local crystal field, can be extremely sensitive to such interactions. By the example of Co dimers on Cu(001) and Pt(001) s…
