We study the effect of surface adsorption of 27 different adatoms on the electronic and magnetic properties of monolayer black phosphorus using density functional theory. Choosing a few representative elements from each group, ranging from alkali metals (group I) to halogens (group VII), we calculate the band structure, density of states, magnetic moment and effective mass for the energetically most stable location of the adatom on monolayer phosphorene. We predict that group I metals (Li, Na, K), and group III adatoms (Al, Ga, In) are effective in enhancing the n-type mobile carrier density, with group III adatoms resulting in lower effective mass of the electrons, and thus higher mobilities. Furthermore we find that the adatoms of transition metals Ti and Fe, produce a finite magnetic moment (1.87 and 2.31 $μ_B$) in monolayer phosphorene, with different band gap and electronic effective masses (and thus mobilities), which approximately differ by a factor of 10 for spin up and spin down electrons opening up the possibility for exploring spintronic applications.
The adsorption behaviour of hazardous gas molecules, namely nitrogen dioxide (NO$_2$) and ammonia (NH$_3$), on phosphorene nanosheet (PNS) was explored by means of ab initio technique. To improve the structural solidity of pristine PNS, we have introduced the passivation of hydrogen and fluorine at the terminated edge. The structural solidity of both hydrogen and fluorine passivated PNS is verified in terms of formation energy. The main objective of this research work is to probe NO$_2$ and NH$_3$ gases using PNS as a base sensing material. The adsorption of various preferential adsorption sit…
Inducing magnetic moment in otherwise nonmagnetic two-dimensional semiconducting materials is the key first step to design spintronic materials. Here, we study the absorption of transition-metals on pristine and defected single-layer phosphorene, within density functional theory. We predict that increased transition-metal diffusivity on pristine phosphorene would hinder any possibility of controlled magnetism, and thus any application. In contrast, the point-defects will anchor metals, and exponentially reduce the diffusivity. Similar to other two-dimensional materials, metals bind strongly on…
Density functional theory calculations are performed on phosphorene quantum dots having different shapes and edge terminations to investigate their structure stability, electronic properties, and gas sensing ability. All the selected phosphorene dots, namely hexagonal and triangular flakes with armchair and zigzag terminations, have positive binding energies which insure their stability even though the bond lengths are much longer than those in the infinite phosphorene layer. It is found that all the selected hydrogen passivated quantum dots have a wide energy gap. In contrast, the partial pas…
Density functional theory calculations have been carried out to investigate single-layer phosphorene functionalized with two kinds of organic molecules, i.e. an electrophilic molecule tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ) as electron acceptor and a nucleophilic molecule tetrathia-fulvalene (TTF) as electron donor. The TCNQ molecule introduces shallow acceptor states in the gap of phosphorene close to the valence band edge (VBE), which makes the doped system a p-type semiconductor. However, when the TTF molecule is adsorbed on the phosphorene, the occupied molecular states introduced into the gap …
Two-dimensional dilute magnetic semiconductors can provide fundamental insights in the very nature of magnetic orders and their manipulation through electron and hole doping. Despite the fundamental physics, due to the large charge density control capability in these materials, they can be extremely important in spintronics applications such as spin valve and spin-based transistors. In this article, we studied a two-dimensional dilute magnetic semiconductors consisting of phosphorene monolayer doped with cobalt atoms in substitutional and interstitial defects. We show that these defects can be…
The time-dependent spin current mediated spin transfer torque behaviour has been investigated via scattering formalism within density functional theory framework supported by Green's function. Quantum magnetotransport characteristics have been revealed in a model semiconducting MoS$_2$/phosphorene van der Waals heterostructure. The dynamics of spin current channelized heterolayer transport has been studied with rotational variation in magnetization angle. It is observed that the time-dependent spin transport torque remains invariant irrespective of magnetization angle direction. The polarized …
Graphene - transition metal phthalocyanine (G-MPc) hybrid systems constitute promising platforms for densely-packed single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Here, we selected iron(II) phthalocyanine (FePc) and investigated its interaction with pristine and defective graphene layers employing density functional theory. Our calculations indicate that thorough proper dehydrogenation of the benzol rings in the FePc molecule its adsorption to graphene is thermodynamically favorable. In general, the presence of anchoring sites on the graphene layer, i.e. point defects, additionally facilitates the adsorption…
It is known that there is a wide class of quasi-two-dimensional graphenelike nanomaterials which in many respects can outperform graphene. So, here in addition to graphene, the attention is directed to stanene (buckled honeycomb structure) and phosphorene (puckered honeycomb structure). It is shown that, depending on the doping, these materials can have magnetically ordered edges. Computed diagrams of magnetic phases illustrate that, on the one hand, n-type doped narrow zigzag nanoribbons of graphene and stanene have antiferromagnetically aligned magnetic moments between the edges. On the othe…
We study exchange interaction in zigzag bilayer phosphorene nanoribbons (ZBLPNRs) under a perpendicular electric field. We evaluate the spatial and electric field dependency of static spin susceptibility in real space in various configurations of magnetic impurities at zero temperature. The electronic properties of ZBLPNR in the presence of a gate voltage is also obtained. In comparison to the other two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene and silicene, ZBLPNR has two nearly degenerated quasiflat edge modes at the Fermi level, isolated from the bulk states. The band gap modulation of ZB…
Graphene functionalization by hydrogen and fluorine has been proposed as a route to modulate its reactivity and electronic properties. However, until now, proposed systems present degradation and limited hydrogen adsorption capacity. In this study, combining first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and reactive molecular dynamics, we analyze the tuning of hydrogen adsorption and electronic properties in fluorinated and hydrogenated monolayer graphenes. Our results indicate that fluorine adsorption promotes stronger carbon$-$hydrogen bonds. By changing the concentr…
We show how hydrogenation of graphene nanoribbons at small concentrations can open new venues towards carbon-based spintronics applications regardless of any especific edge termination or passivation of the nanoribbons. Density functional theory calculations show that an adsorbed H atom induces a spin density on the surrounding $π$ orbitals whose symmetry and degree of localization depends on the distance to the edges of the nanoribbon. As expected for graphene-based systems, these induced magnetic moments interact ferromagnetically or antiferromagnetically depending on the relative adsorption…
The creation of magnetism on non-magnetic semiconductor surfaces is of importance for the realization of spintronics devices. Especially, the coupling of electron spins within quantum nanostructures can be utilized for nanomagnetism applications. Here, we demonstrate, based on first-principles density-functional theory calculations, that the adsorption of H atoms on the Si(111)-(7$\times$7) surface induces the spin polarization of surrounding Si dangling bonds (DBs) and their spin orderings. It is revealed that the H adsorption on a rest-atom site exhibits a Jahn-Teller-like distortion that ac…

Adsorption of molecular oxygen on B-, N-, Al-, Si-, P-, Cr- and Mn-doped graphene is theoretically studied using density functional theory in order to clarify if O2 can change the possibility of using doped graphene for gas sensors, electronic and spintronic devices. O2 is physisorbed on B-, and Ndoped graphene with small adsorption energy and long distance from the graphene plane, indicating the oxidation will not happen; chemisorption is observed on Al-, Si-, P-, Cr- and Mn-doped graphene. The local curvature caused by the large bond length of X-C (X represents the dopants) relative to CC bo…
We have performed first-principles calculations of electronic and dielectric properties of single-layer bismuth (bismuthene) adsorbed with -COOH. We show that the Bi-COOH hybrid structure is a two-dimensional topological insulator with protected edge Dirac states. The adsorption process of -COOH induces a planar configuration to the initially pristine buckled bismuthene. We claim that the stability of these planar structure mainly stem from strain induced by the adsorption of the -COOH organic group, but it is also related to ligand-ligand interactions. Using charge density analysis we show th…
A type of line defect (LD) composed of alternate squares and octagons (4-8) as the basic unit is currently an experimentally available topological defect in graphene lattice, which brings some interesting modification to magnetic and electronic properties of graphene. The transitional metal (TM) adsorb on graphene with line-defect (4-8), and they show interesting and attractive structural, magnetic and electronic properties. For different TMs such as Fe, Co, Mn, Ni and V, the complex systems show different magnetic and electronic properties. The TM atoms can spontaneously adsorb at quadrangula…

Molecular structure and spin-related transport properties are characterized by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope and spectroscopy at 0.5 K. Density functional theory calculations are performed to understand molecular adsorption and spin distribution on Au(111). The molec…
Fullerenes have several advantages as potential materials for organic spintronics. Through a theoretical first-principles study, we report that fullerene C$_{60}$ adsorption can induce a magnetic reconstruction in a Ni(111) surface and expose the merits of the reconstructed C$_{60}$/Ni(111) \emph{spinterface} for molecular spintronics applications. Surface reconstruction drastically modifies the magnetic properties at both sides of the C$_{60}$/Ni interface. Three outstanding properties of the reconstructed structure are revealed, which originate from reconstruction enhanced spin-split $\mathr…
The so-called spin-orbit proximity effect experimentally realized in graphene (G) on several different heavy metal surfaces opens a new perspective to engineer the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for new generation spintronics devices. Here, via large-scale density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed for two distinct graphene/metal models, G/Pt(111) and G/Au/Ni(111), we show that the spin-orbit splitting of the Dirac cones (DCs) in these stuctures might be enhanced by either adsorption of adatoms on top of graphene (decoration) or between the graphene and the metal (intercalation). While …
The Rashba effect, a spin splitting in electronic band structure, attracts much attention for the potential applications in spintronics with no requirement of external magnetic field. Realizing one-dimensional (1D) Rashba system is a big challenge due to the difficulties of growing high-quality heavy-metal nanowires or introducing strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and broken inversion symmetry in flexible materials. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we propose a pathway to realize the Rashba spin-split by adsorbing Gd atom on zigzag graphene nanoribbons (Gd-ZGNR) and further investi…
Rubidium adsorption on the surface of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is found to induce a strong downward band bending, leading to the appearance of a quantum-confined two dimensional electron gas states (2DEGs) in the conduction band. The 2DEGs shows a strong Rashba-type spin-orbit splitting, and it has previously been pointed out that this has relevance to nano-scale spintronics devices. The adsorption of Rb atoms, on the other hand, renders the surface very reactive and exposure to oxygen leads to a rapid degrading of the 2DEGs. We show that intercalating the Rb atoms, presumably in…
The interfaces between organic molecules and metal surfaces with layered antiferromagnetic order have gained increasing interests in the field of antiferromagnetic spintronics. The C60 layered AFM spinterfaces have been studied for C60 bonded only to the outermost ferromagnetic layer. Using density functional theory calculations, here we demonstrate that C60 adsorption can reconstruct the layered AFM Cr(001) surface so that C60 bonds to the top two Cr layers with opposite spin direction. Surface reconstruction drastically changes C60 s spintronic properties 1 the spin-split p-d hybridization i…
Understanding the magnetic properties of graphenic nanostructures is instrumental in future spintronics applications. These magnetic properties are known to depend crucially on the presence of defects. Here we review our recent theoretical studies using density functional calculations on two types of defects in carbon nanostructures: Substitutional doping with transition metals, and sp$^3$-type defects created by covalent functionalization with organic and inorganic molecules. We focus on such defects because they can be used to create and control magnetism in graphene-based materials. Our mai…
The recently synthesized two-dimensional electride Gd$_2$C was proposed to be a ferromagnetic metal that possesses multiple pairs of Weyl points and may display a large anomalous Hall conductivity [Liu \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{125}, 187203 (2020)]. In view of its layered structure, here we carry out first-principles studies on the magnetic and electronic properties of Gd$_2$C in the ultrathin monolayer limit. We find that monolayer Gd$_2$C remains ferromagnetic like the bulk form and the hydrogenation can effectively tune its magnetism and electronic structure. With one-sided …
The ability to design and control the spin and charge order of low dimensional materials on the molecular scale offers an intriguing pathway towards the miniaturization of spintronic technology towards the nanometer scale. In this work, we focus on the adsorption induced modifications of the magnetic and electronic properties of a low dimensional ferromagnetic surface alloy after the adsorption of the prototypical organic molecule perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA). For this metal-organic interface, we observe the formation of a localized $σ$-like bond between the functional…
