The ability to design and control the spin and charge order of low dimensional materials on the molecular scale offers an intriguing pathway towards the miniaturization of spintronic technology towards the nanometer scale. In this work, we focus on the adsorption induced modifications of the magnetic and electronic properties of a low dimensional ferromagnetic surface alloy after the adsorption of the prototypical organic molecule perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA). For this metal-organic interface, we observe the formation of a localized $σ$-like bond between the functional molecular groups and the surface alloy atoms. This strong chemical bonding coincides with a lifting of the characteristic surface alloy band structure and a reduction of the magnitude of the local magnetic moments of the Dy atoms by 18%. We attribute both findings to a mixing of spin-degenerate molecular states with spin-split states of the Dy-Ag surface alloy via the sigma-like bonds between PTCDA and the Dy surface alloy atoms. Our findings clearly demonstrate the potential of tailored molecule-surface sigma-bonds to control not only the electronic but also the magnetic order of low dimensional materials.
The feature-rich electronic and magnetic properties of fluorine-doped graphene nanoribbons are investigated by the first-principles calculations. They arise from the cooperative or competitive relations among the significant chemical bonds, finite-size quantum confinement and edge structure. There exist C-C, C-F, and F-F bonds with the multi-orbital hybridizations. Fluorine adatoms can create the p-type metals or the concentration- and distribution-dependent semiconductors, depending on whether the $π$ bonding is seriously suppressed by the top-site chemical bonding. Furthermore, five kinds of…
The temperature dependence of magnetization in ferromagnetic nanostructures (e.g., nanoparticles or nanoclusters) is usually analyzed by means of an empirical extension of the Bloch law sufficiently flexible for a good fitting to the observed data and indicates a strong softening of magnetic coupling compared to the bulk material. We analytically derive a microscopic generalization of the Bloch law for the Heisenberg spin model which takes into account the effects of size, shape and various surface boundary conditions. The result establishes explicit connection to the microscopic parameters an…
The spin anomalous Hall effect (SAHE) in ferromagnetic metals, which can generate spin-orbit torque to rotate the magnetization of another ferromagnetic layer through a non-magnetic spacer in magnetic junctions, has attracted much attention. We theoretically investigated the spin anomalous Hall conductivity (SAHC) of the L1$_0$-type alloys $X$Pt($X$=Fe,Co,Ni) on the basis of first-principles density functional theory and linear response theory. We found that the SAHC of FePt is much smaller than the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC), leading to very small polarization for the anomalous Hall ef…
Current induced spin-orbit magnetic fields (iSOFs), arising either in single-crystalline ferromagnets with broken inversion symmetry1,2 or in non-magnetic metal/ferromagnetic metal bilayers3,4, can produce spin-orbit torques which act on a ferromagnet's magnetization, thus offering an efficient way for its manipulation. To further reduce power consumption in spin-orbit torque devices, it is highly desirable to control iSOFs by the field-effect, where power consumption is determined by charging/discharging a capacitor5,6. In particular, efficient electric-field control of iSOFs acting on ferromag…

This paper reveals how electronic, magnetic structure and topological phase of 2D, single-layer structures of bismuth are modified by point defects. We first showed that free standing, single-layer, hexagonal structure of bismuth, named as h-bismuthene exhibits non-trivial band topology. We then investigated interactions between single foreign adatoms and bismuthene structures, which comprise stability, bonding, electronic and magnetic structures. Localized states in diverse location of the band gap and resonant states in band continua of bismuthene are induced upon the adsorption of different…
The effect of the interface roughness on the spin injection from a ferromagnet into a semiconductor is studied theoretically. Even a small interface irregularity can lead to a significant enhancement of the injection efficiency. When a typical size of the irregularity, a, is within a domain lambda_F << a << lambda_N, where lambda_F and lambda_N are the spin-diffusion lengths in the ferromagnet and semiconductor, respectively, the geometrical enhancement factor is ~lambda_N. The origin of the enhancement is the modification of the local electric field on small scales ~a near the interface. We d…
A multi-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) study provides evidence for the occurrence of low temperature ferromagnetic/spin-glass behavior in aligned arrays of sub-nanometer single walled carbon nanotubes confined in zeolite nano-channels, owing to sp2-type non-bonding carbon associated localized states with density of ~3 x 1019 /g. Features related to the much anticipated conduction ESR are not detected. In the paramagnetic phase, the ESR linewidth is found to be weakly dependent on microwave frequency.
Hysteresis loops of 3D ferromagnetic permalloy nano-half-balls (dots) with 100 nm base diameter have been examined by means of LLG micromagnetic simulations and finite element methods. Tests were carried out with two orthogonal directions of the externally applied field at 10 kA/(m.ns) field sweeping speed. The comparison of samples with different 3D modifications at the sub-10nm scale, accessible by nowadays lithographic techniques, enables conclusions about different mechanisms of competition between demagnetizing and exchange fields. Design paradigms provided here can find possible applicat…
When an electron passes through a chiral molecule there is a high probability for a correlation between the momentum and spin of the charge, thus leading to spin polarized current. This phenomenon is known as the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. One of the most surprising experimental results recently demonstrated is that magnetization reversal in a ferromagnet (FM) with perpendicular anisotropy can be realized solely by chemisorbing a chiral molecular monolayer without applying any current or external magnetic field. This result raises the currently open question of whether this…
This paper reports our Monte Carlo (MC) studies aiming to explain the experimentally observed paramagnetic molecule induced antiferromagnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic (FM) electrodes. Recently developed magnetic tunnel junction based molecular spintronics devices (MTJMSDs), which were prepared by chemically bonding the paramagnetic molecules between the FM electrodes along the exposed side edges of magnetic tunnel junctions, exhibited molecule induced strong antiferromagnetic coupling. Our MC studies focused on the atomic model analogous to the MTJMSD and studied the effect of molecu…
The ultrafast response to an optical pulse excitation of the spin-spin exchange interaction in transition metal anti-ferromagnets is studied within the framework of the time-dependent spin-density functional theory. We propose a formulation for the purely dynamical exchange interaction, which is non-local in space, and it is derived starting from {\it ab initio} arguments. Then, we investigate the effect of the laser pulse on the onset of the dynamical process. It is found that we can distinguish two types of excitations, both activated immediately after the action of the laser pulse. While th…
We present a new approach to infer the surface density of magnetic moments $I_s$ in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with perpendicular anisotropy. It relies on quantitative stray field measurements with an atomic-size magnetometer based on the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The method is applied to microstructures patterned in a 1-nm-thick film of CoFeB. We report measurements of $I_s$ with a few percent uncertainty and a spatial resolution in the range of $(100$ nm)$^2$, an improvement by several orders of magnitude over existing methods. As an example of application, we measure the modifi…
Relativistic spin-orbit interaction drastically modifies electronic band and endows emergent functionalities. One of the example is the Rashba effect. In noncentrosymmetric systems such as interface and polar materials, the electronic band is spin-splitted depending on the momentum direction owing to the spin-orbit interaction, which is useful for the electric manipulation of spin current. Similar relativistic band-modification is also emergent for spin wave (magnon) in magnetic materials. The asymmetric magnon band dispersion induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which is antisymm…
Europium, one of the rare earth elements, exhibits +2 and +3 valence states and has been widely used for magnetic modification of materials. Based on density functional theory calculations, we predict the 2D EuBr/graphene heterojunctions to exhibit metallicity, huge intrinsic-ferromagnetism nearly 7.0 μB per Eu and the special monovalent Eu ions. Electron localization function (ELF), difference charge densities and Bader charge analyses demonstrate that there are cation-π interactions between the EuBr films and graphene, which explains the stability of these unusual heterojunctions. Graphene w…
