We report the synthesis, magnetic susceptibility and crystal structure analysis for NbB2+x (x = 0.0 to 1.0) samples. The study facilitates in finding a correlation among the lattice parameters, chemical composition and the superconducting transition temperature Tc. Rietveld analysis is done on the X- ray diffraction patterns of all synthesized samples to determine the lattice parameters. The a parameter decreases slightly and has a random variation with increasing x, while c parameter increases from 3.26 for pure NbB2 to 3.32 for x=0.4 i.e. NbB2.4. With higher Boron content (x>0.4) the c parameter decreases slightly. The stretching of lattice in c direction induces superconductivity in the non- stoichiometric niobium boride. Pure NbB2 is non-superconductor while the other NbB2+x (x>0.0) samples show diamagnetic signal in the temperature range 8.9-11K. Magnetization measurements (M-H) at a fixed temperature of 5K are also carried out in both increasing and decreasing directions of field. The estimated lower and upper critical fields (Hc1 & Hc2) as viewed from M-H plots are around 590 and 2000Oe respectively for NbB2.6 samples. In our case, superconductivity is achieved in NbB2 by varying the Nb/B ratios, rather than changing the processing conditions as reported by others.
We report the discovery of structural phase transitions and superconductivity in the full Heusler compounds $X$Pd$_2$Sn ($X$ = Ti, Zr, Hf), by means of electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and x-ray diffraction measurements. TiPd$_2$Sn, ZrPd$_2$Sn and HfPd$_2$Sn undergo structural phase transitions from the room-temperature cubic MnCu$_2$Al-type structure (space group $Fm\bar{3}m$) to a low-temperature tetragonal structure at around 160 K, 110 K and 90 K, respectively, which are likely related charge density wave (CDW) instabilities. Low temperature single crystal x-ray…
The intermetallic compound, YRhAl, has been prepared and is found to be isomorphic with RRhAl (R=Pr, Nd, Gd, Ho and Tm) compounds crystallizing in the orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure (Space group Pnma). Heat capacity and electrical resistivity measurements in the He-3 temperature range reveal that this compound is superconducting with a transition temperature, Tc, of 0.9 K. The electronic specific heat coefficient, gamma, and the Debye temperature are found to be 6.1 mJ/mole K and 197 K, respectively. The specific heat jump at the superconducting transition temperature is found to be consis…
In this review article we present a survey of unconventional superconductors and their coexistence behaviour with magnetism. We focus on Ce- and U-based heavy fermion superconductors, in addition we discuss the rare earth borocarbide and skutterudite superconductors. We show that heavy fermion behaviour in Ce- and U- compounds should be described differently. While the Kondo-lattice model with localised 4f-electrons is appropriate for Ce-compounds, dual models including localised and itinerant 5f-electrons are necessary for U-compounds. We demonostrate that this leads to consistent results for…
We consider a system where structural polymorphism suggests the possible existence of superconductivity through the implied structural instability. SrPd2Bi2 has two poly-morphs which can be controlled by the synthesis temperature: a tetragonal form (CaBe2Ge2-type) and a monoclinic form (BaAu2Sb2-type). Though the crystallographic difference between the two forms may at first seem trivial, we show that tetragonal SrPd2Bi2 is superconducting at 2.0 K whereas monoclinic SrPd2Bi2 is not. We rationalize this finding and place it in context with other 1-2-2 phases
NiBi3 polycrystals were synthesized via a solid state method. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the main phase present in the sample corresponds to NiBi3 in a weight fraction of 96.82 % according to the refinement of the crystalline structure. SEM - EDS and XPS analysis reveal a homogeneous composition of NiBi3, without Ni traces. The powder superconducting samples were studied by performing magnetic measurements. The superconducting transition temperature and critical magnetic fields were determinated as Tc = 4.05 K, Hc1 = 110 Oe and Hc2 = 3,620 Oe. The superconducting parameters were GL …
We measured the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth of La3Pd4Si4 down to 0.02 Tc. We observe a temperature-independent behaviour below 0.25 Tc, which is firm evidence for a nodeless superconducting gap in this material. The data display a very small anomaly around 1 K which we attribute to the possible presence of a superconducting impurity phase. The superfluid density is well described by a two-phase model, considering La3Pd4Si4 and the impurity phase. The present analysis suggests that the superconducting energy gap of La3Pd4Si4 is isotropic, as expected for conventiona…
Several physical properties of the superconducting Heusler compounds, focusing on two systems (Y, Lu, Sc)Pd2Sn and APd2M, where A=Hf, Zr and M=Al, In, are summarized and compared. The analysis of the data shows the importance of the electron-phonon coupling for superconductivity in this family. We report the superconducting parameters of YPd2Sn, which has the highest Tc among all known Heusler superconductors.
The variations of in- and inter- plane London penetration depths, $Δλ(T)$, were measured using a tunnel diode resonator in single crystals of the intrinsic pnictide superconductor LiFeAs. This compound appears to be in the clean limit with a residual resistivity of 4 ($T\to0$) to 8 ($T_c$) $μΩ\cdot$cm and $RRR$ of 65 to 35, respectively. The superfluid density, $ρ_s(T)=λ^2(0)/λ^2(T)$, is well described by the self-consistent two-gap $γ-$model. Together with the previous data, our results support the universal evolution of the superconducting gap from nodeless to nodal upon departure from optim…
The coupling between superconductivity and othorhombic distortion is studied in vapor-grown FeSe single crystals using high-resolution thermal-expansion measurements. In contrast to the Ba122-based (Ba122) superconductors, we find that superconductivity does not reduce the orthorhombicity below Tc. Instead we find that superconductivity couples strongly to the in-plane area, which explains the large hydrostatic pressure effects. We discuss our results in light of the spinnematic scenario and argue that FeSe has many features quite different from the typical Fe-based superconductors.
It has long remained elusive whether CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$ thiospinel shows bulk superconductivity. Here we clarify the issue by studying on the samples of sulfur-deficient CuCo$_{2}$S$_{3.7}$ and sulfurized CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$. The sample CuCo$_{2}$S$_{3.7}$ has a smaller lattice constant of $a=9.454$ Å, and it is not superconducting down to 1.8 K. After a full sulfurization, the $a$ axis of the thiospinel phase increases to 9.475 Å, and the thiospinel becomes nearly stoichiometric CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$, although a secondary phase of slightly Cu-doped CoS$_2$ forms. Bulk superconductivity at 4.2 K and …
The band structure of the new perovskite-like superconductor MgCNi$_{3}$ was studied by the self-consistent FP-LMTO method. The superconducting properties of MgCNi$_{3}$ are associated with an intensive peak in the density of Ni3d states near the Fermi level. The absence of superconductivity for nonstoichiometric compositions MgC$_{1-x}$Ni$_{3}$ is due to the transition of the system to the magnetic state. The possibility of superconductivity was discussed for intermetallics ScBNi$_{3}$, InBNi$_{3}$, MgCCo$_{3}$ and MgCCu$_{3}$ which are isostructural with MgCNi$_{3}$.
The recent discovery of superconductivity in heavy Fermion compound UTe2, a candidate topological and triplet-paired superconductor, has aroused widespread interest. However, to date, there is no consensus on whether the stoichiometric sample of UTe2 is superconducting or not due to lack of reliable evidence to distinguish the difference between the nominal and real compositions of samples. Here, we are the first to clarify that the stoichiometric UT2 is non-superconducting at ambient pressure and under hydrostatic pressure up to 6 GPa, however we find that it can be compressed into supercondu…
The intermetallic compounds AAl2-xSix, where A = Ca, Sr or Ba, crystallize in the C32 structure, same as the recently discovered MgB2 with a high superconducting transition temperature of 39 K. For x = 1, superconductivity has been observed in AAlSi with A = Ca and Sr, but not with A = Ba. The transition temperatures are 7.8 and 5.1 K, respectively for CaAlSi and SrAlSi. The CaAl2-xSix compound system display a Tc-peak at x = 1, a possible x-induced electronic transition at x ~ 0.75 and a possible miscibility gap near x ~ 1.1 which results in a very broad superconducting transition. The Seebec…
Measurements of the London penetration depth and tunneling conductance in single crystals of the recently discovered stoicheometric, iron - based superconductor, CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ (CaK1144) show nodeless, two effective gap superconductivity with a larger gap of about 6-9 meV and a smaller gap of about 1-4 meV. Having a critical temperature, $T_{c,onset}\approx$35.8 K, this material behaves similar to slightly overdoped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ (e.g. $x=$0.54, $T_c \approx$ 34 K)---a known multigap $s_{\pm}$ superconductor. We conclude that the superconducting behavior of stoichiometric CaK11…
Polycrystalline samples of four intermetallic compounds: MV$_2$Al$_{20}$ (M = Sc, Y, La, and Lu) were synthesized using an arc-melting technique. The crystal structures were analyzed by means of powder x-ray diffraction and Rietveld analysis, and the physical properties were studied by means of heat capacity, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements down to 0.4 K. For ScV$_2$Al$_{20}$, LuV$_2$Al$_{20}$, and YV$_2$Al$_{20}$, superconductivity was observed with critical temperatures T$_c$ = 1.00 K, 0.57 K, and 0.60 K, respectively. Superconductivity for the Lu compound is …
In a recent paper (Phys. Rev. {\bf B 67}, 094502 (2003)) Mao et al. investigated the bias-dependent conductance of mechanical junctions between superconducting MgCNi$_3$ and a sharp W tip. They interpreted their results in terms of 'single-particle tunneling'. We show it is more likely that current transport through those junctions is determined by thermal effects due to the huge normal-state resistivity of MgCNi$_3$. Therefore no conclusion can be drawn about the possible unconventional pairing or strong-coupling superconductivity in MgCNi$_3$.
The oxide perovskites are a large family of materials with many important physical properties. Of particular interest has been the fact that this structure type provides an excellent structural framework for the existence of superconductivity. The high Tc copper oxides are the most famous examples of superconducting perovskites, but there are many others [1]. Intermetallic compounds have been the source of many superconducting materials in the past, but they have been eclipsed in recent years by the perovskite oxides. The recent discovery of superconductivity in MgB2 [2] suggests that intermet…
We found superconductivity of intermetallic La$_3$Pt$_4$ below 0.51 K, while searching for the Pt-substituted material of the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) superconductor LaNiC$_2$ ($T_{\rm{c}}=2.7$ K.

We address the hypothesis that in intermetallic compounds, contrary to a long-standing view that considers electron count and crystal structure type as the only significant chemical criteria for the occurrence of superconductivity, consideration of the actual elements present is a third equally important factor. The importance of chemical identity may seem obvious, especially to chemists, but it has not previously been explicitly tested for intermetallic superconductors. Here we test the hypothesis by searching for and finding a new superconductor in the tetragonal symmetry Hf5Sb3-xMx solid so…
The discovery of superconductivity in Magnesium Diborate (MgB$_2$) has stimulated great interest in the search of new superconductors with similar lattice structures. Unlike cuprate or iron-based superconductors, MgB$_2$ is indisputably a phonon-mediated high temperature superconductor. The emergence of high temperature superconductivity in this material results from the strong coupling between the boron $σ$-bonding electrons around the Fermi level and the bond-stretching optical phonon modes. Here we show, based on the first-principles calculations, that Li$_2$B$_3$C is such a good candidate …
There exists a class of non-stoichiometric materials (berthollides) that can be considered as constituted by two sublattices, which have specific physicochemical properties. These properties can be essentially modified by even rather weak interaction between these components. One of them can be regarded as a rigid matrix, while another one as a filling in the form of isolated atoms, molecules or clusters. Structures containing voids of the diameter up to D ~ (1 - 2)nm in diameter in the stoichiometric sublattice belong to this class of compounds. These voids are filled by the second component …
We study the superconducting density of states and vortex lattice of single crystals of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). This material has a critical temperature of $T_c= 35\,$ K, which is one of the highest among stoichiometric iron based superconductors (FeBSC) and is comparable to $T_c$ found near optimal doping in other FeBSC. Using quasi-particle interference we identify the hole sheets around the zone center and find that two superconducting gaps open in these sheets. The scattering centers are small defects that can be localized in the surface topography and …
Topological superconductors (TSCs) are unconventional superconductors with bulk superconducting gap and in-gap Majorana states on the boundary that may be used as topological qubits for quantum computation. Despite their importance in both fundamental research and applications, natural TSCs are very rare. Here, combining state of the art synchrotron and laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated a stoichiometric transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), 2M-WS2 with a superconducting transition temperature of 8.8 K (the highest among all TMDs in the natural form up to d…
We report on the synthesis and the superconductivity of Zr$_4$Rh$_2$O$_{x}$ ($x$ = 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 1.0). These compounds crystallize in the $η$-carbide structure, which is a filled version of the complex intermetallic Ti$_2$Ni structure. We find that in the system Zr$_4$Rh$_2$O$_{x}$, already a small amount ($x$ $\geq$ 0.4) of oxygen addition stabilizes the $η$-carbide structure over the more common intermetallic CuAl$_2$ structure-type, in which Zr$_2$Rh crystallizes. We show that Zr$_4$Rh$_2$O$_{0.7}$ and Zr$_4$Rh$_2$O are bulk superconductors with critical temperatures of $T_c \approx$ …
The superconductor Sr4V2O6Fe2As2 with transition temperature at 37.2 K has been fabricated. It has a layered structure with the space group of p4/nmm, and with the lattice constants a = 3.9296Aand c = 15.6732A. The observed large diamagnetization signal and zero-resistance demonstrated the bulk superconductivity. The broadening of resistive transition was measured under different magnetic fields leading to the discovery of a rather high upper critical field. The results also suggest a large vortex liquid region which reflects high anisotropy of the system. The Hall effect measurements revealed…
The upper critical field of multiband superconductors is an important quantity that can reveal the details about the nature of the superconducting pairing. Here we experimentally map out the complete upper critical field phase diagram of a stoichiometric superconductor, CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, up to 90T for different orientations of the magnetic field and at temperatures down to 4.2K. The upper critical fields are extremely large, reaching values close to ~3$T_c$ at the lowest temperature, and the anisotropy decreases dramatically with temperature leading to essentially isotropic superconductivity at…
Intermetallic compounds containing f-electron elements display a wealth of superconducting phases, that are prime candidates for unconventional pairing with complex order parameter symmetries. For instance, superconductivity has been found at the border of magnetic order as well as deep within ferro- and antiferromagnetically ordered states, suggesting that magnetism may promote rather than destroy superconductivity. Superconductivity near valence transitions, or in the vicinity of magneto-polar order are candidates for new superconductive pairing interactions such as fluctuations of the condu…
Structures and parameters of some high and low temperature superconductors (HTSC, LTSC) are considered basing on the alternative estimate of the O2- ion radius magnitude (0.5-0.6) A. Phase transitions into the superconducting state are considered as the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). The super HTSC with Tc = 371 K (YBa2Cu3Se7) and TC ~ 400K (Ag2(Ag3Pb2H2O6)) and LTSC with Tc~0.3K (SrNbxTi(1-x)O3) are shown to be of the BEC type. Instability of the structure of the first one results from higher magnitude of the Se2- ion radius in comparison with the O2- radius. The second one forms quasi one…
This paper reports the synthesis and superconducting behaviors of the tetragonal iron-chalcogenide superconductor FeSe. The electrical resistivity and magnetic moment measurements confirmed its superconductivity with a $T_c^{zero}$ and $T_c^{mag}$ at 9.4 K under ambient pressure. EPMA indicated the sample to have a stoichiometric Fe:Se ratio of 1:1 ($\pm$0.02). The Seebeck coefficient which was 12.3 $μ$V/K at room temperature, changed to a negative value near 200 K, indicating it to be a two carriers material. Above $T_c$, the $ρ(T)$ curve revealed an 'S' shape. Hence $dρ(T)/dT$, and $d^2ρ(T)/…
The roles of aliovalent Ca(II)-for-Y(III) substitution and high-pressure-oxygen annealing in the process of "superconducterizing" the Co-based layered copper oxide, CoSr2(Y1-xCax)Cu2O7+d (Co-1212), were investigated. The as-air-synthesized samples up to x = 0.4 were found essentially oxygen stoichiometric (-0.03 <= d <= 0.00). These samples, however, were not superconductive, suggesting that the holes created by the divalent-for-trivalent cation substitution are trapped on Co in the charge reservoir. Ultra-high-pressure heat treatment carried out at 5 GPa and 500C for 30 min in the presence of…
We report variation of lattice structure in diborides (AB2) with different A atoms to identify the special case of MgB2 showing high Tc superconductivity. High purity MgB2 (Tc~39 K) has been prepared by direct reaction of the elements and the lattice parameters are measured by x-ray diffraction determining the strain e of the B-B distance. The results show that the superconductivity in these intermetallics appear near a critical point in a two variables (strain and charge density) phase diagram at (ec, rc).
Polycrystalline samples of LiBC compounds, which were predicted as possible candidate for high-Tc superconductivity, have been synthesised by a flux method and investigated by means of electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction patterns showed a plate-like morphology and a single-phase nature of LiBC samples for starting composition of Li1.25BC (flux composition). The lattice constants a, c display a systematic variation with x and has maximum volume of the hexagonal unit cell at x = 1.25. Electrical resistivity measurements revealed …
We find that a tetragonal CaBe_2Ge_2-type structure can be stabilized in non-stoichiometric LaPt_{2-x}Ge_{2+x}. We further discovered that tetragonal LaPt_{2-x}Ge_{2+x} with x=0.15 and 0.2 respectively superconduct at Tc=1.85 K and 1.95 K, which is about four time higher than that in monoclinic LaPt_2Ge_2.
This work reports superconductivity studies in the intermetallic Ti$_{0.85}$Pd$_{0.15}$ performed in normal conditions and under hydrostatic pressure. The crystal structure of the compound has a body centered cubic at room temperature and atmospheric pressure as unstable $β$-Ti phase. X-Ray diffraction pattern shows space group $Im\bar{3}m$ with parameter $a=3.2226(4)$ Åand density around 5.6242 g/cm$^{3}$. The superconducting transition temperature, T$_{C}=3.7$ K was determined from resistance, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. The two critical magnetic fields, the coherence leng…
Intermetallic compounds possess unique atomic arrangements that often lead to exceptional material properties, but their extreme brittleness usually causes fracture at a limited strain of less than 1% and prevents their practical use. Therefore, it is critical for them to exhibit either plasticity or some form of structural transition to absorb and release a sufficient amount of mechanical energy before failure occurs. This study reports that the ThCr2Si2-structured intermetallic compound (CaFe2As2) and a hybrid of its structure (CaKFe4As4) with 2 μm in diameter and 6 μm in height can exhibit …

The effects of partial substitution of Cu and Co for Ni in the intermetallic perovskite superconductor MgCNi3 are reported. Calculation of the expected electronic density of states suggests that electron (Cu) and hole (Co) doping should have different effects. For MgCNi3-xCux, solubility of Cu is limited to approximately 3% (x = 0.1), and Tc decreases systematically from 7K to 6K. For MgCNi3-xCox, solubility of Co is much more extensive, but bulk superconductivity disappears for Co doping of 1% (x = 0.03). No signature of long range magnetic ordering is observed in the magnetic susceptibility …
Superconductivity with $T_{\rm c}$ $\simeq$ 2 K was discovered in the intermetallic binary compounds Rh$_2$Ga$_9$ and Ir$_2$Ga$_9$. This is the first observation of superconductivity in the Rh-Ga and Ir-Ga binary systems. Both compounds crystallize in a distorted Co$_2$Al$_9$-type structure (monoclinic, space group: $Pc$), which lacks spatial inversion symmetry. Specific heat measurements revealed that both compounds are weak-coupling BCS superconductors having an isotropic superconducting gap. Measurements in magnetic fields indicated type-I superconductivity with a critical field $H_{\rm c}(…
Electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements on single crystals of La$Tr_{2}$Al$_{20}$ ($Tr$ = Ti, V, Nb, and Ta) revealed that these four compounds exhibit weak-coupling superconductivity with transition temperatures $T_{\rm c}$ = 0.46, 0.15, 1.05, and 1.03 K, respectively. LaTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ is most probably a type-I superconductor, which is quite rare among intermetallic compounds. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction suggests "rattling" anharmonic large-amplitude oscillations of Al ions (16$c$ site) on the Al$_{16}$ cage, while no such feature is suggested f…
We investigate the pressure and temperature dependence of the lattice dynamics of the underdoped, stoichiometric, high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu4O8 by means of Raman spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. This system undergoes a reversible pressure-induced structural phase transition around 10 GPa to a collapsed orthorhombic structure, that is well reproduced by the calculation. The coupling of the B1g-like buckling phonon mode to the electronic continuum is used to probe superconductivity. In the low pressure phase, self-energy effects through the superconducting transition renormal…
We report the synthesis and physical properties of single crystals of stoichiometric BaNi2As2 that crystalizes in the ThCr2Si2 structure with lattice parameters a = 4.112(4) Åand c = 11.54(2) Å. Resistivity and heat capacity show a first order phase transition at T_0 = 130 K with a thermal hysteresis of 7 K. The Hall coefficient is weakly temperature dependent from room temperature to 2 K where it has a value of -4x10^{-10} Ω-cm/Oe. Resistivity, ac-susceptibility, and heat capacity find evidence for bulk superconductivity at T_c = 0.7 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient at T_c is 11.6 \pm 0.9 mJ/mol…
High-pressure superconductivity in a rare-earth doped Ca0.86Pr0.14Fe2As2 single crystalline sample has been studied up to 12 GPa and temperatures down to 11 K using designer diamond anvil cell under a quasi-hydrostatic pressure medium. The electrical resistance measurements were complemented by high pressure and low temperature x-ray diffraction studies at a synchrotron source. The electrical resistance measurements show an intriguing observation of superconductivity under pressure, with Tc as high as ~51 K at 1.9 GPa, presenting the highest Tc reported in the intermetallic class of 1-2-2 iron…
A systematic study of the superconducting properties in a series of arc-melted Nb-B samples close to the 1:1 composition was carried out. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that all samples are both non-stoichiometric, and comprising of two crystal phases: a majority orthorhombic NbB-type phase, and traces of a minor body-centered cubic Nb-rich phase Nb$_{ss}$ with stoichiometry close to Nb$_{0.98}$B$_{0.02}$. The emergence of superconductivity near T$_c \sim$ 9.0 K was inferred from magnetization data in chunk and powder samples. However, the very small superconducting volume fractions are …
The rare earth magnetic order in pure and doped Er$_{(1-x)}$Ho$_{x}$Ni$_2$B$_2$C (x~=~0,~0.25,~0.50,~0.75,~1) single crystal samples was investigated using magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements. Superconducting quaternary borocarbides, $R$Ni$_2$B$_2$C where R~=~Er, Ho , are both magnetic intermetallic superconductors with the transition temperatures $\sim$ 10 K. These compounds also develop magnetic order in the vicinity of this temperature. Depending on the rare earth composition the coupling between superconductivity and magnetism creates several phases, ranging from a reentrant…
Polycrystalline Sr1-xNdxFeAsF samples were prepared at various Nd-doping levels using both a stoichiometric mixture of the starting materials and in slight excess amounts of FeAs. Susceptibility and resistivity of the samples were studied down to 4 K revealing a probable coexistence of superconductivity and a magnetic ordering. Temperature dependence of resistivity for all the Nd-doped samples shows the presence of a transition below 15 K most likely originating from the magnetic ordering of Nd moments, while the spin-density-wave anomaly at 175 K survives up to 0.35 Nd-doping. Superconductivi…
A possibility for a new family of intermetallic perovskite superconductors Sc3XB, with X = Tl, In, Ga and Al, is presented as a result of KKR electronic structure and pseudopotential phonon calculations. The large values of computed McMillan--Hopfield parameters on scandium suggest appearance of superconductivity in Sc3XB compounds. On the other hand, the possibility of weak itinerant ferromagnetic behavior of Sc3X systems is indicated by the small magnetic moment on Sc atoms in two cases of X =~ l and In. Also the electronic structure and resulting superconducting parameters for more realisti…
Since the discovery of superconductivity in a high-entropy alloy (HEA) Ti-Zr-Nb-Hf-Ta in 2014, the community of superconductor science has explored new HEA superconductors to find the merit of the HEA states on superconducting properties. Since 2018, we have developed HEA-type compounds as superconductors or thermoelectric materials. As well known, compounds like intermetallic compounds or layered compounds are composed of multi crystallographic sites. In a HEA-type compounds, one or more sites are alloyed and total mixing entropy satisfies with the criterion of HEA. Herein, we summarize the s…
Topological materials which are also superconducting are of great current interest, since they may exhibit a non-trivial topologically-mediated superconducting phase. Although there have been many reports of pressure-tuned or chemical-doping-induced superconductivity in a variety of topological materials, there have been few examples of intrinsic, ambient pressure superconductivity in a topological system having a stoichiometric composition. Here, we report that the pure intermetallic CaSn3 not only exhibits topological fermion properties but also has a superconducting phase at 1.178 K under a…
The effect of Mg and C contents on TC in MgCNi3, and structure and superconductivity of MgCNi3-xCox were studied. It is found that the excess of Mg and C in initial material mixture is favorable to improve TC and obtain single-phase samples. For preparing MgCNi3 superconductor, the optimum composition of starting materials is MgC1.45Ni3 with 20wt.% excess of Mg of the stoichiometric composition. In MgCNi3-xCox system, a continuous solid solution is formed, lattice parameter decreases slightly and TC decreases obviously with increasing x. A suppression of superconductivity is observed due to th…
CaFe$_2$As$_2$ has been found to be exceptionally sensitive to the application of hydrostatic pressure and superconductivity has been found to exist in a narrow pressure region that appears to be at the interface between two different phase transitions. The pressure - temperature ($P - T$) phase diagram of CaFe$_2$As$_2$ reveals that this stoichiometric, highly ordered, compound can be easily tuned to reveal all the salient features associated with FeAs-based superconductivity without introducing any disorder. Whereas at ambient pressure CaFe$_2$As$_2$ does not superconduct for $T > 1.8$ K and…
Identifying the nature of magnetism, itinerant or localized, remains a major challenge in condensed-matter science. Purely localized moments appear only in magnetic insulators, whereas itinerant moments more or less co-exist with localized moments in metallic compounds such as the doped-cuprate or the iron-based superconductors, hampering a thorough understanding of the role of magnetism in phenomena like superconductivity or magnetoresistance. Here we distinguish two antiferromagnetic modulations with respective propagation wave vectors of $Q_{\pm}$ = ($H \pm 0.557(1)$, 0, $L \pm 0.150(1)$) a…
