For every finite field F and every positive integer r, there exists a finite extension F' of F such that either SO(2r+1,F') or its simple derived group can be realized as a Galois group over Q. If the characteristic of F is 3 or 5 (mod 8), then we can guarantee that the derived group of SO(2r+1,F') can be realized. Likewise, for every finite field F, there exists a finite extension F' of F such that the finite simple group G_2(F') can be realized a Galois group over Q.
The proof uses automorphic forms to construct Galois representations which cut out Galois extensions of the desired type.
We prove that there are infinitely many finite simple groups of symplectic Lie type, of any specified characteristic and rank, which appear as Galois groups over the field of rational numbers. This generalizes a result of Wiese, which inspired this paper.
Using the overconvergent cohomology modules introduced by Ash and Stevens, we construct eigenvarieties associated with reductive groups and establish some basic geometric properties of these spaces, building on work of Ash-Stevens, Urban, and others. We also formulate a precise modularity conjecture linking trianguline Galois representations with overconvergent cohomology classes. In the course of giving evidence for this conjecture, we establish several new instances of \emph{p-}adic Langlands functoriality. Our main technical innovations are a family of universal coefficients spectral sequen…
Let $ρ_1$ and $ρ_2$ be a pair of residual, odd, absolutely irreducible two-dimensional Galois representations of a totally real number field $F$. In this article we propose a conjecture asserting existence of "safe" chains of compatible systems of Galois representations linking $ρ_1$ to $ρ_2$. Such conjecture implies the generalized Serre's conjecture and is equivalent to Serre's conjecture under a modular version of it. We prove a weak version of the modular variant using the connectedness of certain Hecke algebras, and we comment on possible applications of these results to establish some ca…
By making use of Langlands functoriality between GSp(4) and GL(4), we show that the images of the Galois representations attached to "genuine" globally generic automorphic representations of GSp(4) are "large" for almost every prime. Moreover, by using the notion of (n,p)-groups (introduced by Khare, Larsen and Savin) and generic Langlands functoriality from SO(5) to GL(4) we construct automorphic representations of GSp(4) such that the compatible system attached to them has large image for all primes.
We take some initial steps towards illuminating the (hypothetical) $p$-adic local Langlands functoriality principle relating Galois representations of a $p$-adic field $L$ and admissible unitary Banach space representations of $G(L)$ when $G$ is a split reductive group over $L$. The outline of our work is derived from Breuil's remarkable insights into the nature of the correspondence between 2-dimensional crystalline Galois representations of the Galois group of $\Qdss_p$ and Banach space representations of $GL_{2}(\Qdss_p)$.
We prove a companion forms theorem for ordinary n-dimensional automorphic Galois representations, by use of automorphy lifting theorems developed by the second author, and a technique for deducing companion forms theorems due to the first author. We deduce results about the possible Serre weights of mod l Galois representations corresponding to automorphic representations on unitary groups. We then use functoriality to prove similar results for automorphic representations of GSp4 over totally real fields.
For many finite groups, the Inverse Galois Problem can be approached through modular/automorphic Galois representations. This is a report explaining the basic strategy, ideas and methods behind some recent results. It focusses mostly on the 2-dimensional case and underlines in particular the importance of understanding coefficient fields.
A strategy to address the inverse Galois problem over Q consists of exploiting the knowledge of Galois representations attached to certain automorphic forms. More precisely, if such forms are carefully chosen, they provide compatible systems of Galois representations satisfying some desired properties, e.g. properties that reflect on the image of the members of the system. In this article we survey some results obtained using this strategy.
In this article, we show that the Inverse Galois Problem over a skew field $H$ of finite dimension over its center $k$ is equivalent to a variant of the Inverse Galois Problem over $k$ involving a polynomial constraint. As an application, we show that if $k$ contains an ample field, then the Inverse Galois Problem has a positive answer over the skew field $H(t)$ of rational fractions with central indeterminate.
We prove new cases of the inverse Galois problem by considering the residual Galois representations arising from a fixed newform. Specific choices of weight $3$ newforms will show that there are Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ with Galois group $PSL_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$ for all primes $p$ and $PSL_2(\mathbb{F}_{p^3})$ for all odd primes $p \equiv \pm 2, \pm 3, \pm 4, \pm 6 \pmod{13}$.
We show that the simple group PSL_2(F_p) occurs as the Galois group of an extension of the rationals for all primes p>3. We obtain our Galois extensions by studying the Galois action on the second etale cohomology groups of a specific elliptic surface.
This article is the third and last part of a series of three articles about compatible systems of symplectic Galois representations and applications to the inverse Galois problem. This part proves the following new result for the inverse Galois problem for symplectic groups. For any even positive integer n and any positive integer d, PSp_n(F_{l^d}) or PGSp_n(F_{l^d}) occurs as a Galois group over the rational numbers for a positive density set of primes l. The result is obtained by showing the existence of a regular, algebraic, self-dual, cuspidal automorphic representation of GL_n(A_Q) with l…
This article is the first part of a series of three articles about compatible systems of symplectic Galois representations and applications to the inverse Galois problem. In this first part, we determine the smallest field over which the projectivisation of a given symplectic group representation satisfying some natural conditions can be defined. The answer only depends on inner twists. We apply this to the residual representations of a compatible system of symplectic Galois representations satisfying some mild hypothesis and obtain precise information on their projective images for almost all…
A del Pezzo surface of degree one defined over the rationals has 240 exceptional curves. These curves are permuted by the action of the absolute Galois group. We show how a solution to the classical inverse Galois problem for a subgroup of the Weyl group of type $D_8$ gives rise to a solution of the inverse Galois problem for the action of this subgroup on the 240 exceptional curves. A del Pezzo surface of degree one with such a Galois action contains a Galois invariant sublattice of type $D_8$ within its Picard lattice; this can be characterized in terms of a certain set of sixteen points in …
The inverse Galois problem is concerned with finding a Galois extension of a field $K$ with given Galois group. In this paper we consider the particular case where the base field is $K=\F_p(t)$. We give a conjectural formula for the minimal number of primes, both finite and infinite, ramified in $G$-extensions of $K$, and give theoretical and computational proofs for many cases of this conjecture.
This paper deals with the Weak Inverse Galois Problem which, for a given field $k$, states that, for every finite group $G$, there exists a finite separable extension $L/k$ such that ${\rm{Aut}}(L/k)=G$. One of its goals is to explain how one can generically produce families of fields which fulfill this problem, but which do not fulfill the usual Inverse Galois Problem. We show that this holds for, e.g., the fields $\mathbb{Q}^{\rm{sol}}$, $\mathbb{Q}^{\rm{tr}}$, $\mathbb{Q}^{\rm{pyth}}$, and for the maximal pro-$p$-extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. Moreover, we show that, for every finite non-trivi…
For each of the groups PSL2(F25), PSL2(F32), PSL2(F49), PGL2(F25), and PGL2(F27), we display the first explicitly known polynomials over Q having that group as Galois group. Each polynomial is related to a Galois representation associated to a modular form. We indicate how computations with modular Galois representations were used to obtain these polynomials. For each polynomial, we also indicate how to use Serre's conjectures to determine the modular form giving rise to the related Galois representation.
We prove many new cases of the Inverse Galois Problem for those simple groups arising from orthogonal groups over finite fields. For example, we show that the finite simple groups Omega_{2n+1}(p) and POmega_{4n}^+(p) both occur as the Galois group of a Galois extension of the rationals for all integers n>1 and all primes p>3. We obtain our representations by studying families of twists of elliptic curves and using some known cases of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture along with a big monodromy result of Hall.
We discuss a possible generalisation of a conjecture of Bley, Burns and Hahn concerning the relation between the second Adams-operator twisted Galois-Gauss sums of weakly ramified Artin characters and the square root of the inverse different of finite, odd degree, Galois extensions of number fields, to the setting of all finite Galois extensions of number fields for which a square root of the inverse different exists. We also extend the key methods and results of Bley, Burns and Hahn to this more general setting and, by combining these methods with a recent result of Agboola, Burns, Caputo and…
Fix a positive integer $g$ and rational prime $p$. We prove the existence of a genus $g$ curve $C/\mathbb{Q}$ such that the mod $p$ representation of its Jacobian is tame by imposing conditions on the endomorphism ring. As an application, we consider the tame inverse Galois problem and are able to realise general symplectic groups as Galois groups of tame extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$.
This article is the second part of a series of three articles about compatible systems of symplectic Galois representations and applications to the inverse Galois problem. This part is concerned with symplectic Galois representations having a huge residual image, by which we mean that a symplectic group of full dimension over the prime field is contained up to conjugation. A key ingredient is a classification of symplectic representations whose image contains a nontrivial transvection: these fall into three very simply describable classes, the reducible ones, the induced ones and those with hu…
In this article new cases of the Inverse Galois Problem are established. The main result is that for a fixed integer n, there is a positive density set of primes p such that PSL_2(F_{p^n}) occurs as the Galois group of some finite extension of the rational numbers. These groups are obtained as projective images of residual modular Galois representations. Moreover, families of modular forms are constructed such that the images of all their residual Galois representations are as large as a priori possible. Both results essentially use Khare's and Wintenberger's notion of good-dihedral primes. Pa…
By the theory of Colmez and Fontaine, a de Rham representation of the Galois group of a local field roughly corresponds to a representation of the Weil-Deligne group equipped with an admissible filtration on the underlying vector space. Using a modification of the classical local Langlands correspondence, we associate with any pair consisting of a Weil-Deligne group representation and a type of a filtration (admissible or not) a specific locally algebraic representation of a general linear group. We advertise the conjecture that this pair comes from a de Rham representation if and only if the …
It is shown that Maeda's conjecture on eigenforms of level 1 implies that for every positive even d and every p in a density-one set of primes, the simple group PSL_2(F_{p^d}) occurs as the Galois group of a number field ramifying only at p.
In this article, we prove that if $H$ is a skew field of center $k$ and $σ$ an automorphism of finite order of $H$ such that the fixed subfield $k^{\langle σ\rangle}$ of $k$ under the action of $σ$ contains an ample field, then the inverse Galois problem has a positive answer over the skew field $H(t,σ)$ of twisted rational fractions. Moreover, if $k^{\langle σ\rangle}$ contains either a real closed field, or an Henselian field of residue characteristic $0$ and containing all roots of unity, then the profree group of countable rank $\widehat{F}_ω$ is a Galois group over $H(t,σ)$.
We describe a method for counting the number of extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ with a given Galois group $G$, founded upon the description of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ due to Jannsen and Wingberg. Because this description is only known for odd $p$, our results do not apply to $\mathbb{Q}_2$. We report on the results of counting such extensions for $G$ of order up to $2000$ (except those divisible by $512$), for $p=3,5,7,11,13$. In particular, we highlight a relatively short list of minimal $G$ that do not arise as Galois groups. Motivated by this list, we prove two theorems abo…
This paper focuses on a refinement of the inverse Galois problem. We explore what finite groups appear as the Galois group of an extension of the rational numbers in which only a predetermined set of primes may ramify. After presenting new results regarding extensions in which only a single finite prime ramifies, we move on to studying the more complex situation in which multiple primes from a finite set of arbitrary size may ramify. We then continue by examining a conjecture of Harbater that the minimal number of generators of the Galois group of a tame, Galois extension of the rational numbe…
Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ and $G$ a finite group of odd order. If $K_h$ is a weakly ramified $G$-Galois $K$-algebra, then its square root $A_h$ of the inverse different is a locally free $\mathcal{O}_{K}G$-module and hence determines a class in the locally free class group $\mbox{Cl}(\mathcal{O}_KG)$ of $\mathcal{O}_KG$. We show that for $G$ abelian and under suitable assumptions, the set of all such classes is a subgroup of $\mbox{Cl}(\mathcal{O}_KG)$.
We introduce and study a class of field extensions that we call pre-Galois; viz. extensions that become Galois after some linearly disjoint Galois base change. Among them are geometrically Galois extensions of k(T), with k a field: extensions that become Galois and remain of the same degree after passing to the algebraic closure of k. We develop a pre-Galois theory that includes a Galois correspondence, and investigate the corresponding variants of the inverse Galois problem. We provide answers in situations where the classical analogs are not known. In particular, for every finite simple grou…
We consider the inverse Galois problem over function fields of positive characteristic p, for example, the inverse Galois problem over the projective line. We describe a method to construct certain Galois covers of the projective line and other curves, which are ordinary in the sense that their Jacobian has maximal p-torsion. We do this by constructing Galois covers of ordinary semi-stable curves, and then deforming them into smooth Galois covers.
We construct motivic $\ell$-adic representations of $\GQ$ into exceptional groups of type $E_7,E_8$ and $G_2$ whose image is Zariski dense. This answers a question of Serre. The construction is uniform for these groups and uses the Langlands correspondence for function fields. As an application, we solve new cases of the inverse Galois problem: the finite simple groups $E_{8}(\FF_{\ell})$ are Galois groups over $\QQ$ for large enough primes $\ell$.
We study the inverse Galois problem with local conditions. In particular, we ask whether every finite group occurs as the Galois group of a Galois extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ all of whose decomposition groups are cyclic (resp., abelian). This property is known for all solvable groups due to Shafarevich's solution of the inverse Galois problem for those groups. It is however completely open for nonsolvable groups. In this paper, we provide general criteria to attack such questions via specialization of function field extensions, and in particular give the first infinite families of Galois realiza…
In this paper we prove that for each integer of the form $n=4\varpi$ (where $\varpi$ is a prime between $17$ and $73$) at least one of the following groups: $PΩ^+_n(\mathbb{F}_{\ell^s})$, $PSO^+_n(\mathbb{F}_{\ell^s})$, $PO_n^+(\mathbb{F}_{\ell^s})$ or $PGO^+_n(\mathbb{F}_{\ell^s})$ is a Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$ for almost all primes $\ell$ and infinitely many integers $s > 0$. This is achieved by making use of the classification of small degree representations of finite simple groups of Lie type in defining characteristic of F. Lübeck and a previous result of the author on the image of th…
Let $F/E$ be a Galois extension of totally real number fields, with Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(F/E)$. Let $\mathfrak{N}$ be an integral ideal which is $\mathrm{Gal}(F/E)$-invariant, and $k \ge 2$ an integer. In this note, we study the action of $\mathrm{Gal}(F/E)$ on the Hecke orbits of Hilbert newforms of level $\mathfrak{N}$ and weight $k$. We also discuss the geometric counterpart to this action, which is closely related to the notion of abelian varieties potentially of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type. The two actions have some consequences in relation with Langlands Functoriality. We conclude with an…

Let $H$ be a skew field of finite dimension over its center $k$. We solve the Inverse Galois Problem over the field of fractions $H(X)$ of the ring of polynomial functions over $H$ in the variable $X$, if $k$ contains an ample field.
Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ and let $G$ be a \mbox{finite group of} odd order. Given a $G$-Galois $K$-algebra $K_h$, let $A_h$ be the square root of the inverse different of $K_h/K$, which exists by Hilbert's formula. If $K_h/K$ is weakly ramified, then $A_h$ is locally free over $\mathcal{O}_{K}G$ by a result of B. Erez, in which case it determines a class in the locally free class group $\mbox{Cl}(\mathcal{O}_KG)$ of $\mathcal{O}_KG$. Such a class in $\mbox{Cl}(\mathcal{O}_KG)$ is said to be $A$-realizable, and tame $A$-realizable if $K_h/K$ is tame. Let $…
The paper is concerned with the following version of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem: if $π: X \to Y$ is a Galois $G$-covering of varieties over a number field $k$ and $H \subset G$ is a subgroup, then for all sufficiently large and sufficiently divisible $n$ there exist a degree $n$ closed point $y \in |Y|$ and $x \in π^{-1}(y)$ for which $k(x)/k(y)$ is a Galois $H$-extension, and $k(y)/k$ is an $S_n$-extension. The result has interesting corollaries when applied to moduli spaces of various kinds. For instance, for every finite group $G$ there is a constant $N$ such that for all $n>N$ there …
We address the problem of the determination of the images of three-dimensional geometric and modular Galois representations. In the modular case the existence of these representations is only conjectural. We give conditions to ensure that the images are as large as possible for almost every prime. We compute some examples and stress the applications to inverse Galois theory.
We enhance the analogy between field extensions and covering spaces by introducing the concept of splitting covering which correspondences to the splitting field in Galois theory. We define semi-topological Galois groups for Weierstrass polynomials and prove the existence of a Galois correspondence. This new tool enables us to study the inverse Galois problem from a new viewpoint.
Given a field $k$ and a finite group $H$, {\it{an $H$-parametric extension over $k$}} is a finite Galois extension of $k(T)$ of Galois group containing $H$ which is regular over $k$ and has all the Galois extensions of $k$ of group $H$ among its specializations. We are mainly interested in producing non $H$-parametric extensions, which relates to classical questions in inverse Galois theory like the Beckmann-Black problem and the existence of one parameter generic polynomials. We develop a general approach started in a preceding paper and provide new non parametricity criteria and new examples…
Let $m$ be an integer greater than three and $\ell$ be an odd prime. In this paper, we prove that at least one of the following groups: $\mbox{P}Ω^\pm_{2m}(\mathbb{F}_{\ell^s})$, $\mbox{PSO}^\pm_{2m}(\mathbb{F}_{\ell^s})$, $\mbox{PO}_{2m}^\pm(\mathbb{F}_{\ell^s})$ or $\mbox{PGO}^\pm_{2m}(\mathbb{F}_{\ell^s})$ is a Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$ for infinitely many integers $s > 0$. This is achieved by making use of a slight modification of a group theory result of Khare, Larsen and Savin, and previous results of the author on the images of the Galois representations attached to cuspidal automorp…
There are two famous Abel Theorems. Most well-known is his description of abelian (analytic) functions on a one dimensional compact complex torus. The other collects together those complex tori, with their prime degree isogenies, into one space. Riemann's generalization of the first features his famous theta functions. His deepest work aimed at extending Abel's second theorem; he died before he fulfilled this. That extension is often pictured on complex higher dimension torii. For Riemann, though, it was to spaces of Jacobians of compact Riemann surfaces, W, of genus g, toward studying functio…
Bley, Burns and Hahn used relative algebraic $K$-theory methods to formulate a precise conjectural link between the (second Adams-operator twisted) Galois-Gauss sums of weakly ramified Artin characters and the square root of the inverse different of finite, odd degree, Galois extensions of number fields. We provide concrete new evidence for this conjecture in the setting of extensions of odd prime-power degree by using a refined version of a well-known result of Ullom.
We study the moduli space $\widetilde{\calM}$ of marked cubic surfaces. By classical work of A.\,B. Coble, this has a compactification $\widetilde{M}$, which is linearly acted upon by the group $W(E_6)$. $\widetilde{M}$ is given as the intersection of 30 cubics in $\bP^9$. For the morphism $\widetilde{calM} \to \bP(1,2,3,4,5)$ forgetting the marking, followed by Clebsch's invariant map, we give explicit formulas. I.e., Clebsch's invariants are expressed in terms of Coble's irrational invariants. As an application, we give an affirmative answer to the inverse Galois problem for cubic surfaces o…
A semicommutative finite group scheme is a finite group scheme which can be obtained from commutative finite group schemes by iterated performing semidirect products with commutative kernels and taking quotients by normal subgroups. In this article, for an étale tame semicommutative finite group scheme $G$, we give a lower bound on the number of connected $G$-torsors of bounded height (such as discriminant).
We employ methods from homotopy theory to define new obstructions to solutions of embedding problems. By using these novel obstructions we study embedding problems with non-solvable kernel. We apply these obstructions to study the unramified inverse Galois problem. That is, we show that our methods can be used to determine that certain groups cannot be realized as the Galois groups of unramified extensions of certain number fields. To demonstrate the power of our methods, we give an infinite family of totally imaginary quadratic number fields such that $\text{Aut}(\text{PSL}(2,q^2))$ for $q$ a…
Let $m$ be an integer such that $m \geq 7$ and $m \equiv 0,1,7 \mod 8$. We construct strictly compatible systems of representations of $Γ_{\mathbb Q} \to \mathrm{Spin}_m(\overline{\mathbb Q}_l) \xrightarrow{\mathrm{spin}} \mathrm{GL}_N(\overline{\mathbb Q}_l)$ that is potentially automorphic and motivic. As an application, we prove instances of the inverse Galois problem for the $\mathbb F_p$--points of the spin groups. For odd $m$, we compare our examples with the work of A. Kret and S. W. Shin, which studies automorphic Galois representations valued in $\mathrm{Spin}_m$.
At present, the inverse Galois problem over $\mathbb{Q}$ is unsolved for the Mathieu group $M_{23}$. Here an overview of the current state in realizing $M_{23}$ as Galois group using the rigidity method and the action of braids is given. Computing braid orbits for $M_{23}$ revealed new invariants of the action of braids in addition to Fried's lifting invariant. These invariants can be used to construct generic braid orbits and more Galois realizations over $\mathbb{Q}$ for the Mathieu group $M_{24}$, but until now did not lead to success for realising $M_{23}$ as Galois group over $\mathbb{Q}$…
Let f(x) be a monic polynomial in Z[x] with no rational roots but with roots in Q_p for all p, or equivalently, with roots mod n for all n. It is known that f(x) cannot be irreducible but can be a product of two or more irreducible polynomials, and that if f(x) is a product of m>1 irreducible polynomials, then its Galois group must be "m-coverable", i.e. a union of conjugates of m proper subgroups, whose total intersection is trivial. We are thus led to a variant of the inverse Galois problem: given an m-coverable finite group G, find a Galois realization of G over the rationals Q by a polynom…
