We study the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor J_1 and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor J_2 exchange couplings in the presence of magnetic field. We use both numerical approaches (the density matrix renormalization group method and exact diagonalization) and effective field-theory approach, and obtain the ground-state phase diagram for wide parameter range of the coupling ratio J_1/J_2. The phase diagram is rich and has a variety of phases, including the vector chiral phase, the nematic phase, and other multipolar phases. In the vector chiral phase, which appears in relatively weak magnetic field, the ground state exhibits long-range order (LRO) of vector chirality which spontaneously breaks a parity symmetry. The nematic phase shows a quasi-LRO of antiferro-nematic spin correlation, and arises as a result of formation of two-magnon bound states in high magnetic fields. Similarly, the higher multipolar phases, such as triatic (p=3) and quartic (p=4) phases, are formed through binding of p magnons near the saturation fields, showing quasi-LRO of antiferro-multipolar spin correlations. The multipolar phases cross over to spin density wave phases as the magnetic field is decreased, before encountering a phase transition to the vector chiral phase at a lower field. The implications of our results to quasi-one-dimensional frustrated magnets (e.g., LiCuVO_4) are discussed.
We present the phase diagram of the frustrated ferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg J_1-J_2 chain in a magnetic field, obtained by large scale exact diagonalizations and density matrix renormalization group simulations. A vector chirally ordered state, metamagnetic behavior and a sequence of spin-multipolar Luttinger liquid phases up to hexadecupolar kind are found. We provide numerical evidence for a locking mechanism, which can drive spiral states towards spin-multipolar phases, such as quadrupolar or octupolar phases. Our results also shed light on previously discovered spin-multipolar phases in …
The $J_1-J_2$ spin chain model with nearest neighbor $J_1$ and next nearest neighbor anti-ferromagnetic $J_2$ interaction is one of the most popular frustrated magnetic models. This model system has been extensively studied theoretically and applied to explain the magnetic properties of the real low-dimensional materials. However, existence of different phases for the $J_1-J_2$ model in an axial magnetic field $h$ is either not understood or has been controversial. In this paper we show the existence of higher order $p>4$ multipolar phase near the critical point $(J_2/J_1)_c=-0.25$. The criter…
Recently, it has been shown that spin nematic (quadrupolar) or higher multipolar correlation functions exhibit a quasi long-range order in the wide region of the field-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid (TLL) phase in spin-1/2 zigzag chains. In this paper, we point out that the temperature dependence of the NMR relaxation rate 1/T_1 in these multipolar TLLs is qualitatively different from that in more conventional TLLs of one-dimensional quantum magnets (e.g., the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain); 1/T_1 decreases with lowering temperature in multipolar TLL. We also discuss low-energy features in spin…
We study the frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1 chains, where the ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor coupling competes with the antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling. We use the density matrix renormalization group to obtain the ground states. Through the analysis of spin-spin correlations we identify the double Haldane phase as well as the ferromagnetic phase. It is shown that the ferromagnetic coupling leads to incommensurate correlations in the double Haldane phase. Such short-range correlations transform continuously into the ferromagnetic instability at the transition to the ferromagn…
We study field induced quantum phase in weakly-coupled ferromagnetic frustrated chain LiCuVO$_4$ by neutron diffraction technique. A new incommensurate magnetic peak is observed at $H \ge 8.5$ T. The field dependent propagation vector is identified with the spin density wave correlation in the theoretically predicted magnetic quadrupole order. Quantum fluctuation, geometrical frustration, and interchain interaction induce the exotic spin density wave long-range order in the insulating magnet.
Quantum corrections of the biquadratic interaction in the 1D spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic Heisenberg model are studied. The biquadratic interaction for spin-1/2 chains is eliminated and transformed to the quadratic interaction. Doing a numerical experiment, new insight as to how the classical phases get modified on the inclusion of quantum fluctuations is provided. Observed results suggest the existence of an intermediate region in the ground state phase diagram of the frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains with combination of dimer and chiral orders. In addition, from the quantum entan…
Magnetic field effects on the one-dimensional frustrated ferromagnetic chain are studied by means of effective field theory approaches in combination with numerical calculations utilizing Lanczos diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method. The nature of the ground state is shown to change from a spin-density-wave region to a nematic-like one upon approaching the saturation magnetization. The excitation spectrum is analyzed and the behavior of the single spin-flip excitation gap is studied in detail, including the emergent finite-size corrections.
The one-dimensional quantum spin-1/2 model with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction is considered. The Hamiltonian is first bosonized by using the linear spin wave approximation, and then is treated by using the Green's function approach. An integral expression of the quantum correction to the classical ground state energy is derived. The critical behavior of the ground state energy in the vicinity of the transition point from the ferromagnetic to the singlet ground state is analyzed by numerical calculation, and the result is $-8γ^2$.
We study a ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin system on the square lattice, with nearest neighbors interaction J_1 frustrated by second J_2 and third J_3 neighbors antiferromagnetic interactions, using a mean field theory for the Schwinger boson representation of spins. For J_3=0 we find that the boundary between the ferromagnetic and the collinear classical phases shifts to smaller values of J_2 when quantum fluctuations are included. Along the line J_2/|J_1|= 1 the boundaries between the collinear and incommensurate regions are strongly shifted to larger values with respect to the classical case.…
We investigate the dynamical quadrupole structure factor of a spin-1/2 $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ Heisenberg chain with competing ferromagnetic $J_{1}$ and antiferromagnetic $J_{2}$ in a magnetic field by exploiting density-matrix renormalization group techniques. In a field-induced spin nematic regime, we observe gapless excitations at $q=π$ according to quasi-long-range antiferro-quadrupole correlations. The gapless excitation mode has a quadratic form at the saturation, while it changes into a linear dispersion as the magnetization decreases.
Frustrated one-dimensional (1D) magnets are known as ideal playgrounds for new exotic quantum phenomena to emerge. We consider an elementary frustrated 1D system: the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ ferromagnetic ($J_1$) Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic ($J_2$) interactions. On the basis of density-matrix renormalization group calculations we show the existence of a finite spin gap at $J_2/|J_1|>1/4$ and we find the ground state in this region to be a valence bond solid (VBS) with spin-singlet dimerization between third-neighbor sites. The VBS is the consequence of spontaneous …
Coupled frustrated spin-1/2 chains in high magnetic fields described within the ferro- antiferromagnetic J1-J2 Heisenberg model are studied by the DMRG, the hard core boson, and the spin wave theory approaches. Multipolar phases related to magnon bound states are destroyed (supported) by weak antiferromagnetic (ferromagnetic) interchain couplings Jic. We show that quantum spin nematics might be found for LiVCuO4 whereas for Li(Na)Cu2O2 it is prevented by a sizeable antiferromagnetic Jic. Also for Li2ZrCuO4 with a small antiferromagnetic Jic expected triatic or quartic phases are unlikely, too.…
We investigate magnetic excitations and spin transport properties of a frustrated spin chain with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange couplings in a magnetic field by density-matrix renormalization group methods. In the field-induced quadrupole and octupole regimes, the low-energy excitation is governed by two- and three-magnon bound states, respectively, so that bound magnon clusters would contribute to the spin transport. We show that spin current correlations decrease when the system goes from the quadrupole regime into the octupole regime. Th…
The one-dimensional (1D) isotropic frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 model is considered. Classical and quantum effects of adding a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction on the ground state of the system is studied using the analytical cluster method and numerical Lanczos technique. Cluster method results, show that the classical ground state magnetic phase diagram consists of only one single phase: "chiral". The quantum corrections are determined by means of the Lanczos method and a rich quantum phase diagram including the gapless Luttinger liquid, the gapped chiral and dimer orders is obtai…
By exploiting density-matrix renormalization group techniques, we investigate the dynamical spin structure factor of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions in an applied magnetic field. In a field-induced spin nematic regime, we find gapless longitudinal and gapped transverse spin excitation spectra, in accordance with quasi-long-ranged longitudinal and short-ranged transverse spin correlations, respectively. The gapless point coincides with the dominant longitudinal spin correlation, whereas the gap pos…
A new method of computing multipolar exchange interaction in spin-orbit coupled systems is developed using multipolar tensor expansion of the density matrix in LDA+U electronic structure calculation. Within mean-field approximation, exchange constants can be mapped into a series of total energy calculations by pair-flip technique. Application to Uranium dioxide shows an antiferromagnetic superexchange coupling in dipoles but ferromagnetic in quadrupoles which is very different from past studies. Further calculation of spin-lattice interaction indicates it is of the same order with superexchang…
We show that spin-S chains with SU(2)-symmetric, ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions exhibit metamagnetic behavior under the influence of an external magnetic field for small S, in the form of a first-order transition to the fully polarized state. The corresponding magnetization jump increases gradually starting from an S-dependent critical value of exchange couplings and takes a maximum in the vicinity of a ferromagnetic Lifshitz point. The metamagnetism results from resonances in the dilute magnon gas caused by an inter…
To clarify the transport property mediated by bound magnons in a spin nematic state, we investigate the spin Drude weight of a spin-1/2 $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic $J_{1}$ and antiferromagnetic $J_{2}$ in a magnetic field by numerical diagonalization. At zero magnetic field, numerical results with up to 24 sites suggest that the spin Drude weight would be zero in the thermodynamic limit, indicating diffusive spin transport. With increasing the magnetic field, the spin Drude weight is enhanced at low temperatures, indicating that bound magnons would contribute to the spi…
The frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain is studied by means of a low-energy field theory as well as the density-matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods. Firstly, we study the ground-state phase diagram in a magnetic field and find an `even-odd' (EO) phase characterized by bound pairs of magnons in the region of two weakly coupled antiferromagnetic chains. A jump in the magnetization curves signals a first-order transition at the boundary of the EO phase, but otherwise the curves are smooth. Secondly, we discuss thermodynamic properties at zero field, where…
The magnetization and specific heat measurements have been performed on single-crystalline Gd_3_Ru_4_Al_12_ with a distorted Kagome lattice structure. This spin system is regarded as an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice of XY like Heisenberg model at low temperatures. The magnetic phase diagrams indicate the existence of frustration and Z_2_ degeneracy. The magnetization and specific heat imply the successive phase transitions with partial disorder and a T-shaped spin structure in the ground state.
By exploiting density-matrix renormalization group techniques, we investigate the spin dynamics of a spin-1/2 one-dimensional J1-J2 XXZ model with competing ferromagnetic J1 and antiferromagnetic J2 exchange couplings under applied magnetic fields. Numerical results of spin excitation spectra show that in the field-induced spin quadrupole regime, the longitudinal component has a gapless mode and the transverse component has a gapped mode irrespective of the exchange anisotropy. The excitation gap of the transverse spin excitation increases as the exchange anisotropy increases over the XY-like …
We study the ground state properties of the Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions using two approximate methods. One of them is the Jordan-Wigner mean-field theory and another approach based on the transformation of spin operators to bose-ones and on the variational treatment of bosonic Hamiltonian. Both approaches give close results for the ground state energy and the T=0 magnetization curve. It is shown that quantum fluctuations change the classical critical exponents in the vicinity of the transition point from…
The frustrated one-dimensional (1D) quantum magnet LiCuSbO$_4$ is one rare realization of the $J_1-J_2$ spin chain model with an easily accessible saturation field, formerly estimated to 12~T. Exotic multipolar nematic phases were theoretically predicted in such compounds just below the saturation field, but without unambiguous experimental observation so far. In this paper we present extensive experimental research of the compound in the wide temperature (30mK$-$300K) and field (0$-$13.3T) range by muon spin rotation ($μ$SR), $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic susceptibility…
We study the classical anisotropic ferromagnetic spin chain with frustration. The behavior of soliton and kink solutions in the vicinity of the ground state phase transition from the ferromagnetic to the spiral phase is studied. The dependence of the soliton energy on small anisotropy parameter is established using scaling estimates and numerical minimization of the energy functional. Conditions of the existence of the solitons are determined. It is shown that solitons survive in the spiral phase though with some restrictions on their size. A comparison of the energies of the classical soliton…
It is generally difficult to experimentally distinguish magnetic multipolar orders in spin systems. Recently, it was proposed that the temperature dependence of the nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation rate 1/T_1 can involve an indirect, but clear signature of the field-induced spin nematic or multipolar Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid phase [Phys. Rev. B79, 060406(R) (2009)]. In this paper, we evaluate accurately the field and temperature dependence of 1/T_1 in spin-1/2 frustrated J1-J2 chains combining field-theoretical techniques with numerical data. Our results demonstrate that isotherms o…
We perform a systematic investigation on the ground state of an asymmetric two-leg spin ladder (where exchange couplings of the legs are unequal) with ferromagnetic (FM) nearest-neighbor interaction and diagonal anti-ferromagnetic frustration using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) method. When the ladder is strongly asymmetric with moderate frustration, a magnetic canted state is observed between a FM state and a singlet dimerized state. The phase boundaries are dependent on the asymmetric strength $α_{a}$. On the other hand, when the asymmetric strength is intermediate, a so-ca…
The frustrated isotropic $J_1-J_2$ model with ferromagnetic $J_1$ and anti-ferromagnetic $J_2$ interactions in presence of an axial magnetic field shows many exotic phases, such as vector chiral and multipolar phases. The existing studies of the phase boundaries of these systems are based on the indirect evidences such as correlation functions {\it etc}. In this paper, the phase boundaries of these exotic phases are calculated based on order parameters and jumps in the magnetization. In the strong magnetic field, $Z_2$ symmetry is broken, therefore, order parameter of the vector chiral phase i…
Frustrated spin systems can show phases with spontaneous breaking of spin-rotational symmetry without the formation of local magnetic order. We study the dynamic response of the spin-nematic phase of one-dimensional spin-1/2 systems, characterized by slow large-distance decay of quadrupolar correlations, by numerically computing one-spin and two-spin dynamical structure factors at zero temperature using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group methods. We interpret the results in terms of an effective theory of gapped magnon excitations interacting with a quasi-condensate of bound m…
We present a new scenario for the breakdown of ferromagnetic order in a two-dimensional quantum magnet with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. In this, dynamical effects lead to the formation of two-magnon bound states, which undergo Bose-Einstein condensation, giving rise to bond-centered nematic order. This scenario is explored in some detail for an extended Heisenberg model on a square lattice. In particular, we present numerical evidence confirming the existence of a state with d-wave nematic correlations but no long range magnetic order, lying between the saturate…
Zero and longitudinal field $μ$SR measurements in Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$ and BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$, two prototypes of the frustrated $S=1/2$ square lattice model with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, are presented. Both systems are observed to undergo a phase transition to a long-range magnetic order at $T_N\simeq 3.46$ K, for Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$, and at $T_N\simeq 0.99$ K, for BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. In Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$ both the temperature dependence of the order parameter and the longitudinal relaxation rate above $T_N$ are consistent with a two-dimensional XY model. …
We have studied (Tb$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlores by neutron diffraction and $μ$SR at ambient and under applied pressure. Substitution of Tb for La expands the lattice and induces a change from a spin-glass like state ({\itshape x}=0) to a non collinear ferromagnet ({\itshape x}=0.2). In the ferromagnetic structure, the Tb moments orient close to their local anisotropy axis as for an ordered spin ice, while the Mo moments orient close to the net moment. The $μ$SR dynamical relaxation rate shows a cusp-like peak at the Curie temperature T$_C$ and a broad anomaly at T$^\star$$<$T$_C$…
The frustrated spin-1/2 model with weakly anisotropic ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchanges is studied with use of variational mean-field approach, scaling estimates of the infrared divergencies in the perturbation theory and finite-size calculations. The ground state phase diagram of this model contains three phases: the ferromagnetic phase, the commensurate spin-liquid phase and the incommensurate phase. The non-trivial behavior of the boundaries between these phases and the character of the phase transitions in case of weak anisotropy are deter…
Singlet quantum phases and magnetization of the frustrated spin-1/2 ladder with ferromagnetic (F) exchange in legs and alternating F-AF exchange in rungs
We present an experimental study of the magnetic structure and dynamics of two frustrated hyperkagome compounds, Gd3Ga5O12 and Gd3Al5O12. It has previously been shown that Gd3Ga5O12 exhibits long-range correlations of multipolar directors, that are formed from antiferromagnetic spins on loops of ten ions. Using neutron diffraction and Reverse Monte Carlo simulations we prove the existence of similar magnetic correlations in Gd3Al5O12, showing the ubiquity of these complex structures in frustrated hyperkagome materials. Using inelastic neutron scattering we shed further light on the director st…
In this work we study the complex entanglement between spin interactions, electron correlation and Janh-Teller structural instabilities in the 5d$^1$ $J_{eff}=\frac{3}{2}$ spin-orbit coupled double perovskite $\rm Ba_2NaOsO_6$ using first principles approaches. By combining non-collinear magnetic calculations with multipolar pseudospin Hamiltonian analysis and many-body techniques we elucidate the origin of the observed quadrupolar canted antifferomagnetic. We show that the non-collinear magnetic order originates from Jahn-Teller distortions due to the cooperation of Heisenberg exchange, quadr…
We report a study of the spin dynamics of the frustrated ferromagnetic $J_1$-$J_2$ chain compound linarite, PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$, in applied magnetic fields up to field polarization. By means of an extreme-environment inelastic neutron scattering experiment, we have measured the low-energy spin excitations of linarite in fields up to 8.8 T for $\mathbf{H} \parallel b$ axis. We have recorded the spin excitation spectra along $h$, $k$ and $l$ for the field-induced magnetic phases IV, V and the field polarized state close to saturation. By employing first-principles calculations, we estimate the le…
The Faraday rotation and magneto-optical absorption spectral measurements were conducted to reveal the full-magnetization process and map out a magnetic phase diagram of a typical geometrical frustrated magnet, ZnCr2O4, by using the electromagnetic flux compression method in ultra-magnetic fields up to 600 T. A fully polarized ferromagnetic phase is observed in which the absorption spectra associated with an exciton-magnon-phonon transition disappears. Furthermore, prior to the fully polarized ferromagnetic phase above 410 T, we found a novel magnetic phase above 350 T followed by a canted 3:1…
Low temperature properties of the spin-1/2 frustrated ladder with ferromagnetic rungs and legs, and two different antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor interaction are investigated using the modified spin wave approximation in the region with ferromagnetic ground state. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and magnetic structure factors is calculated. The results are consistent with the numerical exact diagonalization results in the intermediate temperature range. Below this temperature range, the finite size effect is significant in the numerical diagonalization results…
We propose a one-dimensional model consisting of a chain with a t-J Hamiltonian coupled to a Heisenberg chain in a frustrated geometry to describe the appearance of the ferromagnetic phase which has been experimentally observed in vanadate nanotubes. This model contains a mechanism of frustration suppressed by doping suggested by L. Krusin-Elbaum, et al. [Nature 431, 672 (2004)]. We study, using numerical techniques in small clusters, the relation between magnetic order and transport properties in the proposed model, and we perform a detailed comparison of the physical properties of this model…
The ground state phase diagram of the frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain is investigated using the exact diagonalization technique. It is shown that there is a jump in the spontaneous magnetization and the ground state of the system undergos to a phase transition from a ferromagnetic phase to a phase with dimer ordering between next-nearest-neighbor spins. Near the quantum transition point, the critical behavior of the ground state energy is analyzed numerically. Using a practical finite-size scaling approach, the critical exponent of the ground state energy is computed. Our numerical res…
The magnetic properties of the pyrochlore iridate material Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ (5$d^5$) have been studied based on the first principle calculations, where the crystal field splitting $Δ$, spin-orbit coupling (SOC) $λ$ and Coulomb interaction $U$ within Ir 5$d$ orbitals are all playing significant roles. The ground state phase diagram has been obtained with respect to the strength of SOC and Coulomb interaction $U$, where a stable anti-ferromagnetic ground state with all-in/all-out (AIAO) spin structure has been found. Besides, another anti-ferromagnetic states with close energy to AIAO have also…
From thermodynamics, LSDA+U calculations and exact diagonalization studies of a five-band Hubbard (Cu 3d, O 2p) model on CuO2 stripes we found that Li2ZrCuO4 (Li2CuZrO4 in traditional notation) is close to a ferromagnetic critical point. Analyzing its measured susceptibility chi(T) and specific heat cp(T,H) within a Heisenberg model, we show that the ratio of the 2nd to the 1st neighbor exchange integrals alpha=-J2/J1 of the order of 0.3, i.e. it is close to the critical value alpha_c=1/4. Comparing with related chain cuprates we explain the rather strong field dependence of cp, the monotonous…
The spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain with a ferromagnetic first-neighbor exchange coupling $J_1$ and an antiferromagnetic second-neighbor $J_2$ has a Haldane dimer ground state with an extremely small spin gap. Thus, the ground state is readily altered by perturbations. Here, we investigate the effects of XXZ exchange magnetic anisotropy of both the easy-axis and easy-plane types and an alternation in $J_1$ on the ground state, the spin gap, and magnetic properties of the frustrated ferromagnetic spin-$1/2$ chain. It is found that there are two distinct dimerized spin-gap phases, in one of which th…
The stability of the ferromagnetic phase of the 2D quantum spin-1/2 model with nearest-neighbor ferro- and next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions is studied. It turns out that values of exchange integrals at which the ferromagnetic state becomes unstable with respect to a creation of one and two magnon are different. This difference shows that the classical approximation is inapplicable to the study of the transition from the ferromagnetic to the singlet state in contrast with 1D case. This problem is investigated using a variational function of new type. It is based on the boson…
Motivated by the magnetic properties of the spin-chain compounds LiCuSbO$_4$$\equiv$LiSbCuO$_4$ and Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$, we study the ground state of the Heisenberg chain with dimerized nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic (FM)($J_1, J_1^\prime<0$) and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic ($J_2>0$) couplings. Using the density-matrix renormalization group technique and spin-wave theory we find a first-order transition between a fully-polarized FM and an incommensurate spiral state at $2α=β/(1+β)$, where $α$ is the frustration ratio $J_2/|J_1|$ and $β$ the degree of dimerization $J_1^\prime…
We present a model to describe complex phases observed at mesoscopic scales in ultrathin magnetic films. The model is based on the interaction between dipolar as well as quadrupolar magnetic moments. In the special case of strong perpendicular crystal anisotropy, we show that quadrupolar degrees of freedom associated with orientation of domain walls are essential in order to correctly describe the observed phenomenology of domain formation. A nematic phase characterized by orientational order of domain walls (stripe-like) but without translational order is predicted. This isotropic-nematic tra…
The spin-nematic phase is an intriguing state of matter that lacks usual long-range dipolar order, yet it exhibits higher multipolar order. This makes its detection extremely difficult and controversial. Recently, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been proposed as one of the most suitable techniques to confirm its existence. We report a $^{17}$O NMR observation of the reduction of the local magnetization in the polarized state of the frustrated spin-1/2 chain $β$-TeVO$_4$, which was previously proposed to be a fingerprint of the spin-nematic behavior. However, our detailed study shows that …
We study the phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 ferromagnetic chain with anisotropic exchange interactions in an external magnetic field, using the density matrix renormalization group method. We show that an easy-axis anisotropy enhances the tendency towards multimagnon bound states, while an easy-plane anisotropy favors chirally ordered phases. In particular, a moderate easy-plane anisotropy gives rise to a quantum phase transition at intermediate magnetization. We argue that this transition is related to the finite-field phase transition experimentally observed in the spin-1/2 compound …
The spin-1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour (NNN) interaction is investigated. The ground state is the Haldane phase for weak NNN interaction, and is the ferromagnetic phase for weak antiferromagnetic interaction. We find a series of topologically distinct spin-gap phases with various magnitudes of edge spins for strong NNN interaction. The phase boundaries between these phases are determined on the basis of the DMRG calculation with additional spins that compensate the edge spins. It is found that each of the exact soluti…
The double-exchange model, which has been extensively studied in the context of colossal magneto-resistance in perovskite manganese oxides, is known to exhibit a ferromagnetic metallic state at low temperatures because of the interplay between localized moments and itinerant electrons through the Hund's-rule coupling. Here we investigate numerically the ferromagnetic transition in the double-exchange model defined on the frustrated pyrochlore lattice as a simple model for ferromagnetic pyrochlore oxides. We demonstrate that the finite-size corrections are largely reduced by implementing averag…
The topological classification of a series of frustration-induced spin-gap phases in the spin-1/2 ferromagnetic--antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbour interaction reported in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 82, 064703 (2013) is confirmed using two kinds of entanglement spectra defined by different divisions of the whole chain. For the numerical calculation, the iDMRG method is used. The results are consistent with the valence bond solid picture proposed in the previous paper.
We establish that the interplay of itinerant fermions with localized magnetic moments on a checkerboard lattice leads to magnetic flux-phases. For weak itineracy the flux-phase is coplanar and the electronic dispersion takes the shape of graphene-like Dirac fermions. Stronger itineracy drives the formation of a non-coplanar, chiral flux-phase, in which the Dirac fermions acquire a topological mass that is proportional to a ferromagnetic spin polarization. Consequently the system self-organizes into a ferromagnetic Quantum Anomalous Hall state in which the direction of its dissipationless edge-…
Low-temperature magnetization curves of the classical frustrated ferromagnetic chain in the external magnetic field near the transition point between the ferromagnetic and the helical phases is studied. It is shown that the calculation of the partition function in the scaling limit reduces to the solution of the Schrödinger equation of the special form for the quantum particle. It is proposed that the magnetization of the classical model in the ferromagnetic part of the phase diagram including the transition point defines the universal scaling function which is valid for quantum model as well.…
Multipolar orderings in degenerate orbital systems offer unique opportunities for emergent topological phases. The phase diagram of interacting spinless fermions in a $p$-band diamond lattice at unit filling is first studied to elucidate the essential role of orbital multipolar orderings in the evolution of multifold degenerate band nodes. The free band structure around the Brillouin zone center is described by two quadratic band nodes each with a threefold degeneracy, which are spanned by the bonding and anti-bonding $p$-orbital multiplets, respectively. Upon switching on interactions, the tr…
The anomalous Hall effect is investigated for ferromagnetic Fe3Sn2 single crystal with geometrically frustrated kagome bilayer of Fe. The scaling behavior between anomalous Hall resistivity rho_{xy}^{A} and longitudinal resistivity rho_{xx} is quadratic and further analysis implies that the AHE in Fe3Sn2 single crystal should be dominated by the intrinsic Karplus-Luttinger mechanism rather than extrinsic skew-scattering or side-jump mechanisms. Moreover, there is a sudden jump of anomalous Hall conductivity sigma_{xy}^{A} appearing at about 100 K where the spin-reorientation transition from th…
Competition between the ferromagnetic double-exchange interaction and the super-exchange antiferromagnetic interaction is theoretically studied in the presence of geometrical frustration. As increasing the super-exchange interaction, the ferromagnetic metal becomes unstable, and is taken over by a cooperative paramagnetic metal, in sharp contrast with a discontinuous transition to the antiferromagnetic insulator in the absence of frustration. In the critical region, the system exhibits a peculiar temperature-independent behavior with highly incoherent transport, suggesting a large residual ent…
